A massive underwater drone weighing eight tons and over twelve
meters long, set a record by autonomously diving to a
depth of three thousand, four hundred metres during a weeks
long mission. The Hugen Endurance Autonomous underwater Vehicle AUV, developed
by the Norwegian company Congsburg, achieved this milestone during development testing.

As the newest model in the company's Hugen line, Endurance
can operate autonomously over long distances between coasts. According to
Interesting Engineering, on September five, in its latest mission, the
Hugen Endurance dived to depths between fifty and three thousand,
four hundred meters and achieved the estimated operational range of

with a positional error of just zero point zero two
per cent of the total distance travel. HUGEN Endurance is
a fully self sustaining system capable of long duration missions
without human assistance. It is the largest model in the

This underwater drone can be equipped with a range of
mission specific sensors, including sonar tools for mapping and inspection
such as Congsberg's em multibeam and high sas synthetic aperture

According to Kongsburg, Endurance meets commercial demands for high quality
data collection. Thanks to advanced technologies such as the latest
generation pressure tolerant lithium ion batteries, sensors, sunstone inertial navigation

systems and micro hysis navigation Hougen Endurance can handle unexpected situations,
switch between operational modes, and communicate securely with remote control centers.
Its key features include low environmental impact and continuous operation
between coasts for up to fifteen days. The drone can

survey a range of two thousand two hundred kilometers and
map an area of one thousand, one hundred square kilometers
using advanced sonar technology. The system can operate at depths
of up to six thousand meters and can be launched
and recovered from the shore or any available vessel. Consburg

and demonstrated that the HUGEN platform can handle complex multi
day tasks without human intervention.
