Today’s message comes from Luke 15:11, the beginning of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Minister Tina shares the theme of our studies: Law & Order. In Chapter 15 of Luke, Jesus teaches used parables to address things that are lost that become found. He addressed Pharisees who were criticizing his delivery of the word of God in three examples of lost things being found and they are as follows: the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Lost Son (Prodigal Son).
Luke 15:11 (The Prodigal Son)
Jesus’ Audience:
* The chapter opens with Luke 15:1-2, where it is noted that tax collectors and sinners were gathering around to hear Jesus, but the Pharisees and teachers of the law were muttering, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." In their view, Jesus' association with sinners and outcasts was inappropriate for a religious leader. They believed in strict separation from those considered unrighteous or impure.
Jesus’ Response:
* In response to their complaints, Jesus tells three parables in Luke 15. The first two are shorter—the Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3-7) and the Parable of the Lost Coin (Luke 15:8-10)—both illustrating God’s joy in recovering what was lost. These lead up to the more elaborate and personal story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32).
