is they were gonna kill him. Feels pretty safe to say,

you know what I'm saying, that he did that they
were trying to get it him for. I don't know
if they know either, but it seems like they consider
him enough of a friend that This is my question

is like when they say friend versus when I say friend,
are they saying friend in the way that Loofy says friend.
Looviy counts like everybody as his friend, you know, as
long as we like fought on the same side at all,
even sometimes if we didn't. So a part of me

is sort of I like, I would like to be
that way, but I'm just not. There're gonna be some
people that I would throw down my life for and
there are people that I just wouldn't. And Looviy it's
like not a question, but it's also sort of Lovie
takes it for granted that he's not gonna die, We're

ever as him laying down his life because he just
doesn't believe he will lose. And that is sort of
where the disconnect is for me a lot. You know,
Florien says, we thought about doing this as a boy.

had a reaction. I was watching it this morning on
my couch with my dogs and I but it was
like a huge reaction. I just went, oh, that's rad,
and that was pretty much it, so you didn't miss
a lot, but I could see why you were thinking

Oh my god, I keep forgetting that because it's all
bound up. I keep thinking that his hand is in there,
but it's been mentioned that it's gone. So yeah, Saraphim says,

entire governments for you. Bacon's really fucking good, you know,
like I could see it. So all right, let us begin.

I have to mention to you guys, this show has
the intro that it always does, and then it has
now this like new interstitial not interstitial thing, but sort
of like opening bit where it's introducing each of the

characters individually with like a little action shot of them,
and it's along with giving us the background on who
Loofy is and finding the one piece and the whole thing,
and it is. It's gotten to the point now where
the actual like new episode isn't starting until almost six

minutes in sometimes.

So it's a lot.

I feel like they're also making the theme songs longer,
but that could just be my imagination. But you know,
I skip the intro most of the time, like with
the previous arc. I would often if I was doing
three episodes in a row, I'd listen to the intro
music for the first episode, and then I would skip

the intro after that. But I try not to watch
the intro just because a lot of times it has
spoilers in it, and in the like when when the
theme song ends, a lot of times it will just
do the sort of you know, monkey de loofy. But
here it's a whole thing that it didn't used to be.

So I'm getting a little frustrated with how much I'm
fast forwarding through. But anyway, so we are finding out
that Sanji's family is apparently like all Assassins, which I
am super curious about all of this, You guys, I

cannot wait to find out what the hell is going
on here? You know, it's.

We know that.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
He learned how to cook, like he interesting cooking already.
We saw on that other ship and they were basically
making fun of the fact that he cared so much
because it was just like, get the food on the
plates and shut up. But he wanted to make gourmet.
And we know that he got taught how to fight

the way that he does by his later mentor helped
me out with his name guys I've forgotten.

I don't know if he knew anything about fighting before that.
I feel like maybe not Zeh, thank you Sarah him
and all. Like what I'm wondering is, were they saying
to him, You've got to learn to be an assassin
and he was like, but I just want to cook

and they basically told him tough. Or did something happen
where he had to like escape because he was in
or somebody sent him away. There's just like, there's a
lot of potential directions that this could go in, and

there are times where I feel like, you know, something
feels like it maybe.

Has been retconned a little bit.

And then there are times where it seems pretty clear
Oda has known from the beginning what's going on and
what he wanted to do for me. This is hitting
as something that he has known the whole time that
he intended to do, And again, I really can't help

but respect it. You know, it's it is frankly, absolutely
fucking insane how long it takes to get to this
part of the story though, and that that's the part

that I am really curious about, is like how what's
the word I want here? Not exactly did you decide
to wait this long? Because I don't even know if
it's a decision or if it's like the opportunity just
hadn't presented itself and it wasn't urgent, or did he

have a plan the whole time on exactly when he
was going to drop this, or you know what I'm saying,
Like there's because the way that Oda is telling a
story in this show is so incredibly different than any
other author that I have encountered. Not to say he's
different than any other author period, because I know that

there are other manga authors and other people who have
been doing this sort of thing, and I get that,
but I personally, this is my first.

Other than uh, what do you call it?

Full Metal Alchemist's Brotherhood? This is my first manga based anime.
Are there animes that aren't based on mangas guys? I
have to assume there are, but uh yeah, just sort

I genuinely, how do you play the game this long

How do you tell any story and take as long
as he does to get to the beats. I this
is not a criticism. It's just such a long game.
And there are other stories out there that take books

and books and books to unfold. And when you look
at the publishing time, it's spans of you know, decades sometimes,
So that's this is not like necessarily a new concept.
But there is something different about it here, you know

what I'm saying.

It's just like.

It's it is. So it requires a type of like consistent,
constant dedication that I won't say I'm not capable of
because I've been doing Unspoiled for twelve years longer now maybe,
and I have been recording pretty much NonStop that entire time,

with some you know, some little vacations and whatnot in there,
which is more than ODA did for sure. But nevertheless,
so I know I am capable of it. But it's
really different for me. I don't feel kind of pressure
he must have been feeling, and I'm not working on
the same property the entire time. I'm jumping all over

(13:06):
the place. Like frankly, my job is sort of ideal
for me given my ADHD in that it's always new,
it's always changing, there's always a new property, there's always
a new episode or new chapters and something new is happening,
and I never feel bored. There are times where something
might be kind of hard to get through, but it's
never that I'm bored, you know, And I can't help.

(13:28):
But wonder does he run into that? With this going
on for so long, does he ever have times where
he's like, ugh, everybody is so obsessed with one piece,
and I am sick of this and I would love
to be able to just like drop it, take on
something else, hand it over to another person. You know,
I'm very curious about it, and it's the sort of

(13:51):
thing that I just don't think if I were him,
I would ever be honest with anybody about if the
answer were yes, you can can't let your audience know
that you are sick and tired of writing the thing
they all love and want more of, because it really
takes the fun out of it as somebody consuming media

(14:13):
to know that the person responsible for it isn't having
a good time. So you really can't tell the truth
if even if you do feel that way anyway, So uh,
Sarah says, and Oda thought the whole story would only
take about five years to tell when he started tons

(14:35):
of everything. Oh, regarding anime that are not manga, one
Piece is rather unique since all the other long running
shown in anime are infamous for clearly having no idea
where to go at some point and clearly just making
things up as they go. Florien says, consistency is key
and lots of things in life, and recently it has
been like spelled out for me that that is such

an issue for people with ADHD is the consistency. And
a friend of mine said, I really wish instead of
calling it attention deficit disorder, that they called it attention
dysregulation because.

I don't lack attention.

I just don't get to choose where I'm putting that attention,
which is exactly right. I will pay attention like a motherfucker,
but I don't pick. It's whatever happens to catch my fancy,
and then I'm gone for a month and everything else
gets neglected, and it's like genuinely painful to focus on
things that require my attention from day to day instead

of the thing that I want. Sarahim says, no one
lives One Piece more than Ishiro Oda. This guy has
to be forced to take breaks because he can and
has worked himself into exhaustion trying to tell a story.
Is it because he wants to do that, It's not
because he's like being pressured to do that. I feel

like every time I've heard people talk about this, the
implication was that it was his evil overlord's making him
do things that overworked him. So I don't know. Like,
and when I say when I heard people talk about this,
I am including like in the chats here as well

as like comments on some social media posts and stuff
that were nonspoilery. I promise I haven't been spoiled by
any comments anywhere. But I just have always been under
the impression there was an unrealistic expectation of him, and

not that it was like he was necessarily in a vacuum,
such a workaholic. But I don't I genuinely, all I
know is what you guys have told me. So Seraphim says,
being a manga author is a terrible thing mostly and
it is infamous for the pressure. But Oda is the
rare case of someone who is that driven on his own. Well,
you know what, as much as I want to be

like Oda, that's not healthy. I at least am glad
it's something that he has his own passion about, because
like what I always think of is Agatha Christie, who
everybody loved Pooro and she was so sick of writing
him and it was what sold, and it was what

(17:28):
her publishers kept like pressuring her to write, and so
she did. But by the time she finished with that series,
she was like, I am so I hate that little
creepy man. I fucking I'm over it. And it always
made me sad to know that she reached a point
where she felt like that with that character, because Poorot
is just one of my faves, and I get why

she'd feel that way, but also, it's you just created
somebody so compelling.

It's not my fault that you were so good at
your job. Anyway, Okay, I gotta get into this, so
let's see. Lufy at the start of this episode says,
only one thing matters here, is Sonji coming back to
us or not. It doesn't matter to me if he
gets married. And I feel like it had been pretty

(18:20):
clear that he said he was going to come back,
And of course I know that there may be wishful
thinking in that or you know, but Loufy usually takes
things at face value, so I sort of expected for
him to be like he said he's coming back, then
he's coming back. I thought that he would be much

(18:43):
less anxious about this, I guess. And Lufy also says,
if Big Mom thinks that we're going to work for
her due to this marriage, by the way, she's got
another thing coming. If there is an alliance between us,
you're working under us, at which point Peckham's is so

(19:11):
shocked and appalled at the absolute gull of this literal
child that he bounces around in the bed as if
he's been picked up and tossed around. It's a very
puzzling moment. I'm not gonna lie, guys. It felt very weird.
But you know, he uh, he's injuring himself more. And

(19:39):
Peckham's like, he stands up finally and says, you'd better
watch that tongue because I'll wreck you. And we get
this weird moment where the focus on his eyes with
like zoom in and there's lots of little sparkles on
his eyes because he's lifted his weird little sunglasses his
point he sunglasses, and it was really reminding me of

(20:08):
Millhouse from from The Simpsons. I don't know if you
guys remember this joke, but at one point somebody tells him, like,
take off your glasses so we can see your beautiful eyes.
And he takes his glasses off, and they are just
two little piss holes, basically, And that's what this guy's
got going on here. He has these awesome shades and
then he lifts his glasses and he's got just two perfect,

(20:30):
tiny dots. But yeah, he has not dealt with Lufy before,
and so he's trying to challenge Lufy and just be like,
did you really say that? And of course we have
a more of him rolling around in pain. There's this
weird sort of sound effect that I think maybe is
supposed to be him like popping a stitch or something

(20:53):
like that, and Carrot is in the background cracking up
over this. Carrot is sort of a weird character for me.
I thought that she'd be more a part of stuff
because of the way that she began in this arc,
and she's been pretty background a lot of the time,

(21:13):
and she's treated as younger in a lot of ways
than I was imagining her to be. But yeah, she's
just sort of like around for this scene and Peckham says,
either way, he's not getting out of this marriage. Blackleg
had the right idea giving himself up. No one can

(21:35):
turn down an invitation to one of Mama's tea parties,
no matter what the reason might be. Nobody puts Mama
to shame, not without paying the price. A couple days
after they don't show at the party, they Mama's would
be guessed gets a surprise present. It's a loved one's

(21:55):
head in a box which is truly unhinged, and he
names a bunch of different people from Sanji's history that
Big Mom could potentially choose to decapitate. And it's interesting

(22:18):
to me how much of his history they are aware of.
He says, it might be one of his pals from
the restaurant, or she could kill someone in Kambaka Kingdom
who trained him. Came Obaca sorry and yeah, Big Mama

(22:40):
is uh.

Formidable.

I really kind of want to spend some more time
around her and see if there is something I The
villains in this show have often been kind of one
note isn't the right word, but there has been a
very strong kind of through line to their personalities and

(23:11):
the most that we have sort of like gotten deviation
from that has really been with their sidekicks more than
with themselves, and this sort of thing feels on par
for the kinds of villains that we have met before.

(23:32):
And I'm just sort of wondering if there's going to
be anything about her other than what her business is,
because it's candy that feels distinctive and really different, like
other than the esthetic due to it being candy, you
know what I'm saying. But yeah, I I this moment.

(23:57):
You know, it's not that it's it's like not threatening,
and it is treated as threatening, and it is treated
that like probably when somebody who leaned over and whispered
in Sangy's ear and made him go to this tea party,
they likely told him, unless you want one of your

loved ones heads delivered in the mail, you want to go.
So it's effective, it's it's intimidating, but it is also
a little bit uninteresting, I guess, and I hope there's
more to her than this, But it's difficult because you

need to make your person intimidating, and you also have
got to sort of draw out that time before the
audience gets to meet them and it's a fine like
it's a it's a difficult needle to thread because you
want to build up the intimidation factor, but you also

don't want to make it that there's no way for
them to actually really live up to the hype of
the people who came before. They're they're harbingers and lickspittles
and henchmen, you know. And we've seen Big Mom on
the phone, right, We've like, she hasn't been like out

(25:24):
and about, I don't think, but we've seen her in
a sort of like silhouette before. I'm just sort of
I'm a little worried, you guys, because I don't find
her that interesting yet, and I don't, like, I don't

(25:45):
feel real worried about her in a way that I
feel I should. All things considered, this ruthlessness, we've seen
it before, you know what I'm saying. So any way, Yeah,
he continues on with like this is why no one
can fight the four emperors and why everybody bows down

to her, and Nami says, so, Soanji knew the stakes,
he didn't go by choice, and Peckham says, maybe this
will put you at ease for what it's worth. Once
this plays out, you won't be forced to work under mama,

and he says the marriage is strictly political. If Mama
wants someone to be a part of her crew, she
wants them to be a part of her bloodline as well.
In other words, this marriage is a ritual to forge
a bond between the vin Smoke family and the Charlotte family.
That is all so from this point on, it's got
nothing to do with you guys. Basically, he's saying you

aren't going to have to worry about Sony because he's
not even going to be part of your crew anymore.
He's going to be part of her crew due to
the bloodline thing and marrying in. He's the son of
the vin Smoke family before he is one of your crew.

(27:17):
Don't get mad at me, saying to Loofy because Lufy
is picking him up by the front of the shirt
and tosses him off the bed, and Lufy says there's
no way that he would agree to that with those terms,
and he says, well maybe not, but he wouldn't live
long after saying no. So Lufy says, what are you

going to do after this? And he says, well, I'm
going to go back to Mama. But I have to
settle that thing with beij He'll be surprised to see
I'm not dead. I wish we could just call him Capoon,
because Beije I don't like at all.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
And Lufy is like, all right, I'm gonna go with you.
If we all.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
Go and try and get him out of there, it
will look like we're starting a war and we don't
have time for a big fight. But I can crash
the party by myself if I go with this guy.
All I need to do is stop the wedding.

Speaker 3 (28:20):
Now.

Speaker 2 (28:21):
I maybe out a line here, but this doesn't really
feel in character for me. I understand what Lufy is saying,
that's not the issue. But Lufy just doesn't seem like
he's ever given any shits about tactics, you know what
I'm saying. It's always felt for me like.

Speaker 1 (28:44):
We are.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
Doing the big thing that saves our friend, whether or
not they want us there. And it's just surprising to me,
you know what I'm saying that like he seems this
willing to uh to consider a more subtle option. I

guess that's really what it is. It feels much more
nuanced than the thinking that I am used to from Loofy,
Saraphim says, don't take silhouettes too seriously. Most of the time.
It's a case of Oda hasn't finalized what he wants

their look to be. Okay, I don't even really remember
her silhouette too much, to be honest, so that's really
even not a problem. Bernadette's here, Hi, Bernadette, and Florence's
thank you. I hate Benje. I mean the name. Yeah,
it's not a good name.

I'm sure like.

There's meaning to it of some kind that I don't
know about. But I mean, just Capone is just so
much more memorable and uh succinct, and it feels like
it's a very clear indicator of the type of character
that he is. Don't use such a recognizable name as

Capone anywhere in the rest of his name and then
not have that be the way he's referred to by everybody.
It's just sort of confusing. But anyway, this is when
Carrot says this sounds like fun, and Wanda says, Carrot,
this isn't some joke, and this is what I mean

(30:31):
with her like being treated like she's a kid almost here.
So Lufy decides that he is going to go get
Chopper to heal Peckham's and that way they will be
able to get on the road really quick. Peckhams tries
to like hail him back and.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
Be like, I'm not done. We're not going. I didn't
agree to do this.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Lufy's already gone, and he runs into Zorro and like, hey,
did you hear about this wedding stuff? And he says,
you're worried about Sanji and Zorro says, come on, of
course I'm not. I'm the one who said we should
forget about him. This is when Chopper and company all

(31:17):
arrived back, and he tells he tells Chopper like he's
starting to bleed. He's you know, up and about bashing
into stuff and yelling a lot, And immediately Chopper goes
in there and gets serious about handling him, and it's like,

(31:38):
you know, he puts all this work into fixing him,
only for this stupid asshole to get up and start
immediately bashing around.

Speaker 3 (31:48):
And this seems to be a.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Theme with everybody like lately that Chopper is working on,
nobody wants to listen to him. Later on, kat Viper
is doing this exact same thing. So this is when
Loufy meets cat Viper and he calls him a monster cat,

(32:09):
and I was sort of like wondering, is he gonna
be cranky about this? But no, Cat Viper just seems delighted.
And he literally takes a flying leap at Loofy and
lands on him and Zorro and smashes the bench that
Zora was sitting on. And when I say takes a

(32:32):
flying leap, I do not mean like to attack him.
He's doing that body rub gartoe friendship thing but not
considering what all the effect is going to be. So

(32:52):
this dude is truly fantastic. I just love him so much.
I just wanted to say that, like, out of the gate,
cat Viper is a real pleasant surprise, I guess is
really the way I want to say this, Like I

(33:15):
didn't know what to expect from him, and the fact
that him and dog Storm are at odds with each
other all the time. I thought it was going to
mean that, like one of them is going to be
significantly more annoying in some way than the other, and
instead it seems like there's an animosity there that neither

(33:38):
of them really deserves. It doesn't feel to me like
there's I don't know if it's just that cat Viper
is so much less thoughtful because Dogstorm is the more
serious of the two and seems to be the one
that's like more cerebral. I suppose could be the way

(34:03):
you say that, uh, and cat Vipers like somebody who
does things more impetuously. Maybe that's where they wind up
sort of bumping heads. Is that in that respect? But

(34:25):
part of this says monster Cat is a way more
reasonable name than cat Viper, which I agree, cat Vip
like dog Storm, while it's not really a good name,
let's be honest, it at least kind of makes sense
in its way. There's this there's definitely a feeling of like, okay,

(34:47):
well a storm of flying claws and jaws and whatnot,
Like I understand, I can. It's evocative, right, it's making
me think of something that's could be threatening. Cat Viper
is just confusing. That's just a weird combo and also

doesn't suit him as a character at all, Like any
if anything, this character should be cat Storm because he's
fucking like chaotic, whereas dog Storm is a lot more
It seems to me, from what I know of them,

(35:29):
so far intentional about what he does and is like
focused and choosing in a way that storm doesn't really.

I would say more he's like an arrow or what's
something a laser dog laser That just sounds like a toy. Anyway,
Seraphim says, like a lot of the worst generation pirates,
Beije is a reference to a historical pirate slash privateer,

I'm sure, but it's not the name that like makes
you go, oh hey, you know it's capone is the
name everybody is going to recognize. It just feels like
such a weird choice. They fight like cats and dogs,
which it's you know what, in my household, it is

like that our cats and dogs, you know what I say.
This one of my cats has been really making headway
in with Pippen, so I shouldn't even say that. Both
Ariya and Ripley really like Pippen, but not Arwin, not

at all. So yeah, she there goes a dog storm there. Yeah.
So anyway, this dude is very much like on the
same wavelength as Loofy because he is like, we need

(37:05):
to throw a party. Let's make some barbecue and have
a good time, and it is a delightful little sequence.
You guys know that I am always a fan of
when our people get to just sit back and have
a good time with each other. And there's also the
moment where Law shows up and he's got all of

his guys with him and they thank Lufy for taking
care of their captain. He says, you know, here's all
my dudes. They really wanted to meet you. The Heart pirates,
and there are twenty of them. They're all doing all
these different poses too. It's really weird. And also we

(37:48):
have more of Brooke getting attacked by a bunch of
the minx. I really hate this joke, guys. I know,
I get what we're doing. I do, but I just
I really feel bad for him.

He's not having a good time, you know, Like that's
really what it is.

It's like if this were the joke and Brooke were
just sort of like resigned and exasperated and just sort
of going like as they like chew on one of
his bones, then I'd probably be like, oh, okay, I see.
But he's like yelling and screaming and trying to get
away from them, and it just feels terrible to me.

(38:39):
I don't like it. It's a kind of like, I
feel like, maybe we could have made this joke a
few times and had it be that all of the
like the the ones the dog minks that are trying
to chew on him, maybe keep having to like remind
themselves like the fisher friends not food sharks from Oh

(39:03):
my God, Finding Nemo. Maybe if it were that and
it were the they were clearly constantly tempted, but they
also understood that it was not appropriate. That joke I
could have dealt with. But it's just the fact that
it's like every time that he is around them, he's

(39:24):
pounced upon by a fucking pile of them. They're literally
dog piling him. I just really I don't like it.
It makes me, said, I.

Speaker 3 (39:35):
Like Brooks so much, you know what I'm saying, I
really do.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
So it makes me like I want him to be
able to cut loose and enjoy himself with everybody in
the same way they all get to do, although I
guess they don't all get to do, because like half
the thing here is that we've got a thing going
on with the uh Samurai. So anyway, let's say I'm

(40:05):
trying to find the spot where there it is okay.
So at the end of this episode is when Lofy
is looking around in the midst of the party and
he's thinking like, I'm really hoping that this that I'm
not forgetting something, And then we cut to Brooke, Frankie,

(40:27):
and Robin, who are all determined that they are going
to stop the Samurai from getting up into the city
because they are worried about the reaction of the Minx
to seeing samurai after their city was destroyed by people

(40:48):
looking for a Samurai. So, for those who are listening
to this episode after the fact, please allow me to
briefly get you up to speed on what's just happened.
I was talking and then all of a sudden, my
screen just began to give me a little spin and
it wouldn't let me end the broadcast, but it also

(41:10):
said I had no internet, and my internet did not
come back for about eight hours, so I was about
forty five minutes in and had to stop. So it
has now been I think.

Speaker 3 (41:29):
Almost a week since.

Speaker 2 (41:31):
That occurred, and tomorrow I'm going to be doing a
live with Florian again, which I'm very excited about. And
Florian messaged me I was just thinking last night. Ooh,
I'm gonna have to do like a catch up episode tomorrow,
and Floria messaged me this morning and was like, hey,
so about that last fifteen minutes. So I'm just popping
on real quick to record for like fifteen twenty minutes

(41:54):
to finish out the previous episode. And I say pre
episode because listening to this this is all part of
the same episode. You just have to understand that. For me,
it's been a week since what I was last saying.
So if I wind up repeating myself, please just bear
with me. You guys, you know how it can be sometimes.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
But yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (42:18):
Went and rewatched the second half of the last episode,
and I just because I just wanted to refresh myself
on like the overall vibe, which by the way, is
seven sixty seven. I will be recording with Florian tomorrow
on correct me if I'm not If I'm wrong here, Florian,

(42:41):
it's three episodes, right, so seven sixty eight through seven seventy,
which I obviously have not yet watched because I didn't
want to do that until I finished recording on this section.
Florian says, yes, three, okay, great.

Speaker 3 (42:55):
So what I I.

Speaker 2 (42:58):
Just went back on my own recording a little bit
to see where I had been when I was recording
and it went out, and I was starting to sense
something was wrong. So there you could hear me being
a little distracted. But uh, I was saying that I
was having some really mixed feelings at this point in

(43:20):
the episode. Honestly, I had the feelings like from the beginning,
but I didn't really bring it up too much because
I wasn't sure how big a deal this was really
going to end up being the constant like, don't mention Samurai,
don't mention that we know any all of this stuff.

(43:41):
I understood why our friends were feeling that way, but
it just seemed to me so strange to assume just
because we like know some Samurai and they happened to
be with us, they are going to be really upset
by that. And you know, I think that my takeaway

(44:02):
was just everybody isn't logical. We have very emotional reactions
to things, even when we know better, you know, even
when internally we kind of tell ourselves, why am I
getting so upset about this? Why am I reacting this way?
I think that's something that you get a little bit
better at. I want to say as you get older.

(44:24):
But that's not true. Some people don't ever seem to
get to this point. But I like to think that, like,
as therapy is becoming more of an understood thing, and
as we are encouraging ourselves and one another to interrogate
our reactions to things a little bit more, we are
gradually beginning to open the door to a world that

(44:47):
has a bit more introspection and a bit more compassion
for other people's responses to things as well. I can
watch somebody in like they are really not using their
head right now with the way they're feeling, and also
step back and look at the many times that I

(45:08):
also didn't use my head, and remember they are a
human being and sometimes shit just hits you a certain way,
you know. So that said the whole like, don't ever
talk about samurai, don't ever talk about their kingdom which
starts with a W. And I'm forgetting already what it is,

(45:28):
even though they just said it when I watched the episode,
I think it's one, oh right, I still kind of
felt like nobody has gone back and told the two
Samurai that are with you that this is a problem,
and nobody, like we have our friends who are sitting

(45:49):
at the top of the cliff, and I say, cliff,
it's the side of the elephant. It's not a cliff,
but we have them sitting there, trying to prep them,
to warn them. But I do kind of wish that, like,
if they were as worried as they were, that this

(46:11):
was taken care of a little bit more proactively than
to just wait for them to come up. And this
is the thing that I keep having difficulty with regarding
the way powers work in this show, where we will
forget that somebody has powers to do certain things because

(46:32):
it's not convenient for them to do them right now. So,
like Robin's ability with being able to make arms pop
out from anywhere would be absolutely perfect for just lowering
her down the side of the elephant and warning the
samuraig eyes, and then she could either go back up

(46:52):
again by herself, she could bring them and hide them
somewhere whatever. Now, granted, all of this is predicated on
the idea that we really do want to keep the
Samurai away from the minks. Obviously, the way that the
plot is structured is everything happens so that the minks
pass bypassed the straw hats and that way we can

(47:15):
get this like shocking moment. But I wouldn't have been
mad if the Samurai were like, no, no, no, it's
not like that, you don't understand. And there were a
little bit more friction between them and the straw Hats
in a way that involves communication rather than just everybody

(47:37):
yelling at each other, which is what winds up happening,
is that the straw hats like tackle them and tell them, like,
you don't get what happened here, and they thought there
was a samurai and destroyed their entire city that had
been like thousands of years old. And it's weird, all
things considered that neither of the samurai actually really says

(48:01):
but we know these guys, we are aware of what's
going on here. They never actually spell it out, and
I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that they
don't really know or you know what I'm saying, Like
it just it felt like everything had to be contrived
in just such a way so that we could have

(48:23):
this shocking moment of finding out that the minks actually
did have this dude, And I think there's a way
to do this where you can still arrive at the
shocking twist without it feeling so I'm trying to think
of the right word here without feeling like you have
to twist everybody's behavior so much, you know what I'm saying.

(48:47):
All that said, I really really did love this twist.
This is a wild and I just the fact that,
like the second of these two episodes opens with or
maybe doesn't open, but at least like part way through

(49:07):
the scene where we are with the Minx and the
Samurai are hiding, we have got dog Storm and cat Viper.

Speaker 3 (49:19):
I was about to.

Speaker 2 (49:19):
Say Viper cat, which I kind of prefer actually, but
we have the two of them just like insulting each other,
and then like I think, dog Storm says to cat Viper,
you look like shit basically, and cat Vipers like, excuse me, mister,
I only have one leg. But I don't really think

(49:41):
you should be throwing stones in that house made of
untempered glass that you are standing in. And I really
enjoy the fact that finding out they were covering for
this guy. After all, these two do not like each
other and do not get a lo but they are

(50:01):
unified in the fact that they would never give this
guy up. It doesn't matter how much they dislike one another,
that is absolutely irrelevant to the question of uh of
honor and pride and protection for a friend. And I

(50:22):
really do love a character who like has unmitigated hatred
for somebody, but also does their damn thing and sets
it aside, doesn't necessarily hide like setting aside does not
mean pretending I like somebody but is able to just

(50:42):
get on with it anyway, versus Zoro and Sanji, who
like they can get on with it if they are
not grouped together, but if they are within an eyeline
of one another while they're fighting, is always going to
be a whole thing. I swear to God, I just
really the whole way that the two of them work.

(51:08):
I don't think that we ever really get quite that
much detail about why they don't like each other. It's
just basically cats don't like dogs. You know, I would
be interested if there's more of a story to that,
But also if there isn't, it's fine. I don't you know,
that's fine. But yeah, So we have Condre and Kinemon

(51:32):
pushing past the straw hats who are desperately trying to
keep them away, and then you have the moment where
the two of them Cat Viper and dog Storm kneel
down and tell them, Oh, yeah, your friend's here, and
he's fine, he's very well, and all of the straw
hats just looking shocked. And I'll tell you what, guys,

(51:55):
I think part of the reason that this hits so
hard for me as well isn't just the fact that,
like it never even entered my head that this guy
was really here, straight up never occurred to me, but
also the fact that it took me a moment to
register what they were even saying here because the name

(52:17):
of the samurai they're looking for, whose name is.

Speaker 3 (52:19):
Like Rio something like that.

Speaker 2 (52:22):
It's one of those names that almost sounds like parts
of another word when it said the right way, ry
Soo says Florian So. I had a moment of like, wait,
who are they talking about? And then suddenly like clicking
into place, Wait, that's the guy they were looking for
this whole time.

Speaker 3 (52:43):
Wait, that's the guy that Wait that but he's not here.
I thought he wasn't here.

Speaker 2 (52:48):
Like it was just this sort of cascade of thoughts
in my head as I was understanding the import of
what they had just admitted. And this show I have
often and we'll continue complain about the fact that there
are these prolonged camera pans over everybody's faces as they
look shocked with their mouth hanging open, making strange noises

(53:10):
of excitement or despair or whatever. But this was one
of the few times where that slow pan actually gave
me the time to figure out what just happened. It
was that slow pan and seeing everybody else's shocked faces,
and I was like simultaneously seeing their faces and being like,
why are they acting this way?

Speaker 1 (53:32):
Wait?

Speaker 2 (53:32):
Who is it?

Speaker 3 (53:33):
Riiso is here in good health? Riis Oh my god?

Speaker 2 (53:37):
And then my face was doing the face that all
of the characters on screen were doing. And it was
just a really nice moment because like, I don't get
fooled often, you know. And I'm not trying to say
that I'm so smart. I'm just saying I cover so
much and I take such time in my coverage that
a lot of people don't take. When you're just binge

(53:59):
watching something and you go from one episode to another,
you're not stopping and asking questions, you're not talking things through,
you're not figuring out the beats of a plot necessarily,
And so just by virtue of the way that I
cover things for the show. It gets difficult to trick
me sometimes because I will clock things that an audience

(54:21):
member watching in the normal way doesn't clock, And whenever
I get tricked, I feel like they like somebody really
did something there, you know, and especially here my complaints
about the way that there's no communication between the straw

(54:43):
Hats and the Samurai, the fact that Robin could have
gone down, and more than all of this doesn't really
have anything to do really with the reveal of Riso
having been here the whole time, so it doesn't influence
how I feel about that twist at all. It just
feels like all of that stuff is sort of ancillary

(55:03):
and probably would have helped this feel a little bit
less of a tortured situation to begin with. But the
twist itself with watching them be tortured, watching the way
that they just to their almost dying breaths, swore this
person wasn't here, and absolutely believing them, and also feeling

(55:26):
like I can't believe these guys are continuing to torture them.
Can't they see these people aren't here. I'm definitely having
a moment of like, these dudes need to fucking move on, obviously,
you're in the wrong place. And finding out those just
were right actually like not good people and they shouldn't

(55:46):
have been doing this, but they knew this person was here,
they had good information changes the whole vibe of everything.
Florian says, I was shocked and in tears the first
time watching this, and now the minks have an A
plus plus in Lufy's book. Yeah, you can see the
moment where Lufy hears them say like, we're not fucking

(56:08):
a friend over and him just being like god, damn
right or not, like absolutely, Oh, that is his playbook,
you know, And it's very fun for him to not
have to explain to somebody because we're friends. He gets
to watch somebody else be like, well, we're friends and

(56:29):
find a kindred spirit.

Speaker 1 (56:31):
You know.

Speaker 2 (56:32):
I really enjoy that just for him, because there is
something about being an extremely good hearted person who wants
to look out for everybody else and how constantly disappointed
you probably are in the world when other people don't
have that attitude, and so it must be delightful to
come across an entire city's worth of people like It's
not as if there was a second there was a

(56:53):
mink that was off by himself being like, I'll tell
them and then I'll get all of this to stop.
If just if we just get Riso up, they would
leave us alone. Nobody seems to be thinking that way.
And I'm setting aside Peckham's because he's part of Big
Mama's crew and probably he would have betrayed everybody because
he seems like he doesn't have the same moral compass

(57:14):
that they do. But I also like to think that
he because he doesn't have the same moral compass he
left that like the fact that he has gone and
made his own life away from this city means that
he didn't fit in, you know. So the fact that
they were all on board here and we're willing to
let this ancient city that meant so much to them

(57:35):
be destroyed the way that it was, I mean, what
a sacrifice, and for one person's life, which I think
a lot of folks would argue wasn't necessarily worth it.

Speaker 3 (57:45):
And you know, in a logical.

Speaker 2 (57:48):
Like dispassionate sort of way, I could see that argument.
But it's just tough because sometimes it's like you have
to set aside logic for a second and just think
about the value of doing something. Doing the right thing
for a person, and it's tough. Is it the right thing?

Speaker 1 (58:12):
You know?

Speaker 2 (58:12):
If everybody here had died from that gas, would that
have been the right thing? I feel like I might
think no, But because we're standing here and everybody got
out now it's feeling like it's worth it. And that's
always the way, isn't it Like depending how on the outcome,
it determines whether or not it was the right or

(58:35):
a good choice. So anyway, that's everything, and I'm going
to wrap up this recording, but I just really wanted
to get all of this out before I did my
recording tomorrow with Florian. So thank you guys for coming
