Peter is perplexed by the unfamiliar rabbit tracks, which are too large to be his and too small for Jumper the Hare. He initially fears the tracks belong to a territorial rabbit who might drive him away. However, he then hopes the rabbit is either a newcomer or no bigger than himself.

Following the tracks, he finds a tree where the other rabbit has marked its impressive height, confirming it's much larger than him, and causing Peter to decide against a confrontation until he regains his strength.

Notable Quotes:

  • "Who has attentive ear and eye, Will learn a lot if he but try." – Peter Rabbit (epigraph)

Summary:

  • The "measuring-tree" is a clever narrative device, establishing the presence and dominance of another rabbit without a direct encounter.
  • Peter's initial boastfulness about his wit is quickly contrasted by his physical state.
  • The subtle "no trespassing" message conveyed by the measuring-tree fuels Peter's determination.
