Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to Tail Talk Grooming Chronicles with Hound
Therapy, the podcast where wetalk all things pet grooming,
daycare academy and more.
Hosted by Shannon and Tanya ofHound Therapy serving pet owners
across North Texas, we're hereto share expert tips, hilarious
pet stories and the inside scoopon keeping your furry friends

(00:25):
happy and healthy.
Our motto humanity over vanity.
And don't worry, we don't bite.
Let's get started.
Who let the dogs out?
Who let the dogs out?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Welcome everyone.
I'm Sofia Yvette, co-host andproducer, here in the studio
with Shannon and Tanya.
Shannon and Tanya, how's itgoing?
It's great here.
How are you?
I'm doing great.
So over the years, you've growna remarkable following.
However, some listeners may notbe familiar with your whole

(01:04):
journey.
Let's take it from the top.
Could you share a littlebackground about your company
and what you do?
Absolutely, I'm Shannon.
This is my daughter-in-law,tanya.
We didn't mean for this to be afamily business when we started
it, and it's turned out to bejust exactly that.
Everybody grooms, bathes, dries, office, support.

(01:24):
We are all about a connectionand working together, which has
been really nice, and thatstarted mostly because of COVID.
We had some time to go on and Iwould say, first and foremost,
we'd like to thank everybody forjoining us.
We really appreciate it.
For us, our experience is abouthealth and beauty and more
about health, coat care, skincare for all of your pet's needs

(01:46):
.
People go to the vets maybeonce a year, sometimes twice,
for shots after they're six tonine months old.
We see your pet every two, fourand six weeks, so we are able
to do some early detection.
We have a hydration system herethat really gets down to the
skin, causing a whole lot lesstime for the dog to be on a
table, so we're able to doeverything in the tub that we

(02:09):
need to do instead of a dogstanding on a table.
It helps a lot with the olderdogs, the younger dogs, but we
really focus from the skin outin a medical sort of way,
without being docked, because weare by no means none of us here
have done our 18 years ofschool up, because we are by no
mean none of us here have doneour 18 years of school.
That said, we do recumbent airinfections and new molds and

(02:30):
growths that come up, kind oflike your hairdresser would, if
you come in and you're like, hey, your hair doesn't look as good
or it's not looking as healthyas it did when you first came in
.
So we have taken our focus andour idea and educating our
clients by helping their dogs, and we feel like our clients are
our family.
We know them by name, we knowtheir dogs by name, we know when
they're having babies.

(02:50):
So we educate them and look, itmight be time to see a vet or
you might need to come a littlebit more often, or some tips and
tricks that you do to take careof your dog.
So we're really trying to havean all over.
We really want a bettersolution for pet owners for our
care of their animals.
Vets are expensive, they'repricey and they're not really

(03:11):
worried about the coat of yourdog.
I mean, I'm not saying thatthey're not worried about good
food and things like that butwe're working from the skin out.
We're going to make sure yourdog smells good, looks good and
is healthy when it goes home.
We do want to have a goodhaircut, but that's not the most
important thing.
The most important thing isthat your dog comes here and
he's happy and when he drives upinto the parking lot his tail

(03:34):
is wagging because he knows he'sgetting ready to come in and
visit us and see his friends.
So that's kind of why we dowhat we do.
So, shannon and Tanya, whenyou're not busy running the
business, what do you do for fun?
Oh well, tanya's got twins yeah, twin babies which come to work
.
They come to work with me everyday.
They play in the pen with thedogs.

(03:56):
We like to fish both of us,we're outdoorsmen Fish yeah, we
like animals inside and out.
We cruise, I cruise, I cruise.
I've never been on a cruise.
She's twin, so she's basicallymommy All the time.
Well, someday maybe you couldtake them on a cruise.
Yes, that's the plan anyway, hopefully next year.

(04:19):
That's a ton of stars, we'llsee how many.
Yeah, we know marketing is keyto any business's success.
How do you market your business?
Most of our marketing has beenreally through word of mouth.
We have some social media.
I would say we can probably dobetter with our social media

(04:39):
than we are.
We've not really done any bigpromos.
We love the podcast.
We're super excited about this.
We'd love for people to hearabout what we do and how we can
better help them impact theirlives whether they've got
allergies, sad dogs, aggressivedogs, old puppies, all of it but
we haven't had a big platformreally to do that with.
Fortunately, we have a verygood community and a good

(05:01):
network and a very loyalclientele that really refers.
We had referrals every weekfrom other people that are here
and we've got pretty goodreviews on Google, so Google has
helped for new people that havemoved into the area.
I have a couple of realtorsthat we deal with too, so if
they've just moved in, we'llgive them a flyer.
Hey, here we are.
We're not too far from a dogpark either and adoption events.

(05:24):
We're starting to do adoptionevents as well, which has been a
lot of fun.
We're gonna probably end upwith a lot more pets.
So you're, shannon and tanya, you both are very busy people,
as the book can may tell in yourown words.
Why are you doing this?
So before we, this pet industryis unregulated.

(05:47):
It's unregulated throughout theUS, not just Texas, throughout
everywhere.
I also have a barber's licensewhich took 1,500 hours.
The state has given me a classthat I have to take, hours that
I have to complete.
They test me every two years tomake sure that I have
cleanliness, I have good habits, that I know how to cut hair,
how I know not to get diseasesfrom one person to another.

(06:07):
The state requires that they donot require dog grooming
employees or employers or ownersto have any kind of education
at all whatsoever.
So if you can open up a bookand say, hey, I'm a dog groomer
and I've hired them, so they'vebeen 10, 15 years in.
I've hired from big box stores.
I've hired little local And'vebeen 10, 15 years in.

(06:28):
I've hired from big box stores.
I've hired little local andthey don't know how to groom or
they've been taught by somebodywho didn't, and they've got bad
habit being taught, bad habitafter bad habit.
That is a big, big problem.
People trust you with your petsor your family and they're
handing over this animal and Ican't tell you.
I have a lady today that camein and you you know she's been
coming here for a long time, butshe found me because her dog
was cut and I explained to themhey, things happen, we work with

(06:50):
live animals.
People make mistakes Happen, yeah, and I don't know anything
about those groomers, but I doknow that we've all made
mistakes.
That said, they were verytraumatic and they can be
usually avoided if you do thingscorrectly, if you follow the
book, if you know your breeds,if you have a very good
foundation of what an earinfection looks like, what it

(07:13):
smells like, if you can handle abad dog and you're not afraid
of that, if you have some reallygood conversation and open
communication with the peoplethat are coming in about.
Hey look, I want to help youmake your dog be more active in
your family, you know.
So, if you take them out, letme show you some training tips,
things to work on at home.
We really do go above andbeyond because we really want

(07:36):
those animals to be part oftheir family and they want that.
They want to be able to takethem out.
We're in a whole new age nowwhere people your dogs go
everywhere.
It's very European and now it'svery Texan.
So it's coming this way and Ilove that kind of life.
That's the kind of life that Ilive.
My dog goes with me everywhere.
She eats with us, she goescamping with us, she goes to the

(07:58):
eye doctors with me.
I mean, she's my dog and she'swith me and there's never, ever
been any question about nobodysaid me no kids allowed.
She is my child.
Now my kids are grown.
We started this for an educationmoment.
We wanted to educate not onlythe people that are here that
work for us students that comein, but the pet owners like how
to better care for your dog andand provide the top level of

(08:21):
care with giving them a niceclean, cut haircut as well.
So that's really kind of abonus.
The best way I can describe itis if you drop your kid off at
daycare, your baby's in daycare, and you're trusting and
trusting those people with yourchild, and if they learn the
ABCs, that's like a bonus, right?
If they don't, and they'restill happy when they leave and

(08:44):
come.
That's why I dropped them offright?
We want them to be happy andsafe, but if they can learn
something and get somethingwhile they're here, that's the
ultimate.
Oh well, we love it.
Shannon and Tanya, we'll catchyou in the next episode.
Have a fantastic rest of yourday.
Great Thank you.
Fantastic Rest of your day, great Thank you.
