(00:00):
Welcome back to Thinks I'll Takeit from here, the podcast where
we deep dive into TV, film and books.
I'm your host, Cami, and today we're breaking down episode 3 of
the Summer I Turn pretty season 3.
I'm joined by a special guest, Devin from the Boston wenches.
After coming across her profile and seeing that she stands 10
toes down on her opinions, I just knew I had to have her on.

(00:23):
So everyone be nice to her. Before we dive into the
breakdown, I forgot to mention the seven This is an Adam Fisher
hate account, so if you're goingto be on the show, you have to
hate everyone we hate. Is that going to be a?
Problem. No, Adam Fisher's the dad,
right? Yes, and he's also dead to us,
so. Yeah, no, I don't.
I don't like him. OK.

(00:43):
So we can actually continue. This is good news.
Yeah, Yeah. No, we're good.
Let's walk through the major plot points in this episode.
This one opens with Jeremiah andBelly being all lovey dovey.
Then we finally get the ring, which I'm guessing Jeremiah
bought this with like two fairy funds because you really have to

(01:04):
squint and use a microscope and you still might not see that
ring. I actually have a really fun
Easter egg about this ring. I tracked down the exact ring
and the company. So it's a stacking ring from
Catbird called the Diamond Fizz Ring Sparkler.
And guess how much it costs? Just based on what you saw,
guess how much this ring cost? Like 50 bucks.

(01:28):
Is it a real diamond? That's what I'm confused.
About well, so it cost $298. Are you kidding me?
He definitely spent more on Cabo.
OK so here's my thing and not tobe superficial or materialistic
but I'm just saying if I was dating someone and they proposed
to me with that small of a diamond we would be breaking up

(01:48):
point blank because I'm sorry but if I can't see it from ATV
screen and I'm watching in like 40, not happening Jeremiah,
sorry. I'm not materialistic either, I
think it just shows you that this was extremely impulsive.
I just. I'm not over the fact that he
proposed to her without a ring at 1st and then had to backtrack

(02:11):
get the ring proposed in his dorm room like post hookup sash
and just like whipped it out andthen with those atrocious
glasses on. Like where did he pull all of
this stuff out from? Wait, wait, I'm gonna have to
stop you right there. I actually thought the glasses
were really cute. Oh my God.
I thought the glasses were cute,OK.
But you're right. I feel like that proposal,

(02:32):
that's not how someone should get engaged.
And I think what they try to do on this show is add Stevens
accident to make that proposal make sense.
And I just want to say right nowto all of my loved ones, if
something dramatic ever happens to me, please do not get engaged
to somebody's dusty sun just because of my situation, because

(02:53):
I refuse to hold responsibility for that.
I actually second that because Ido not want to be blamed for
that. Speaking of the proposal, Belly
meets up with Taylor at the coffee shop and Taylor tries to
talk to Belly about how horribleshe feels because her and Steven
aren't seeing eye to eye. And then while Taylor's kind of
spiraling about that, Belly seesthis as an opportunity to drop

(03:17):
the engagement bomb to her friend.
And I think at first Taylor was like, are you pregnant?
And then immediately was like, this is because of Steven.
You're engaged because of Steven.
That whole scene was wild. I just.
So I have a few questions, actually.
One, who gets coffee for five seconds?
I don't even think they had timeto finish their drinks.
That's that was the biggest plothole in that whole scene.

(03:39):
First of all, Taylor was right in asking if Belly was pregnant,
because that would have been my first question.
Clearly no one's head was in theright space when she asked that.
It's interesting that you boughtup who gets coffee in that short
period of time. This scene in particular, I
thought there were so many things that could have been
different. And something that we explore on
the podcast is rewrites. And I think something I would

(04:03):
change in this scene is I would just add another person that's
not in the cousin's crew. They needed an outside voice, I
think, to give belly advice because I feel like Taylor just
gave up and was like, well, there's nothing I can really say
or do. You're just going to marry this
man. And I think that's what I would
change is just add another voicethat could be the voice of

(04:24):
reason in that scene because nobody was the voice of reason
anyway. So just to get back to what's
going on in the plot, I'm going to kind of speed past these next
few scenes because I feel like they were kind of filler.
But we find out that Stevens quote UN quote bedridden and
Laurel's like in this full helicopter mom mode.
Honestly, she probably was feeling guilty considering that

(04:46):
while Steven was in a coma, she was hooking up with her ex.
Which is interesting because themoment Susanna's out of the
picture, Laurel and John suddenly hook up.
I don't know if you remember, but back in season 1, John
seemed to imply that Laurel couldn't maintain serious
romantic relationships because of Susanna, which is kind of

(05:09):
weird. I wonder if we'll get to the
bottom of that, why she was unable to do that?
Was she in love with Susanna? Was Susanna in love with her?
Did they have a toxic friendship?
I feel like it means something that they are suddenly hooking
up again. I'm convinced that Susanna and
Laurel were they were lovers because where were the.
Husbands, I hope we get an answer.

(05:31):
Someone send this to Jenny Hong. Then we cut to Belly saying
goodbye to her roommate and theyclearly seem close even though
we haven't seen that on screen. And they have this conversation
about how Belly cares way too much about what people think of
her because Belly asks her, Are you secretly judging me for

(05:51):
getting back together with Jeremiah?
I don't know if her scenes have gotten cut or if it's just too
early in the show and we'll get more of her, but I actually
really like her character. After Belly has that sweet
conversation with her roommate, her dad comes to help her pack
the stuff in the car so she can go back home.
And that car ride was kind of awkward because John was trying

(06:12):
not to make it obvious that he and Laurel hooked up, and then
Belly was also trying not to blurt out that she's engaged.
The dad misinterprets Belly being weird as her suspecting
something about him and Laurel. So he then confronts Laurel and
says, I think Belly might know something's going on between US.

(06:34):
And then Laurel instantly switches back until the
emotionally unavailable queen she's been since season 1 and
uninvites him to Susanna's dedication so that the kids
don't get the wrong idea. How do you feel about this whole
random Laurel and Jean arc? OK, so I'm a Laurel hater.
I have been since day one and I will continue to be until this

(06:57):
show ends. But I just think this storyline
is kind of dumb. Let's just call it what it is.
We're focusing on Jeremiah, Conrad and Little Miss Belly,
but why don't we just focus on that and then the Steven and
Taylor of it all? Why are we adding in this whole
plot line where the mom and dad are hooking up again?
Like, no one really cares. And it's just going to add this

(07:18):
unfinished storyline that they're never going to get to.
And it's just going to be like, we're on the season finale and
then this show's ending after this season, right?
So we're going to get to the season finale and everyone's
going to be like, OK, So what happened to that weird storyline
where like, the parents fucked up and now they're just not
together again? Speaking of side plots taking

(07:39):
center stage in this show, we get the scene with Taylor and
her mom. And you know what's interesting?
This is when we start to really understand just how messy
Taylor's mom is. If you think Taylor is immature,
her mom somehow is worse, right?Like she's dating toxic men and

(07:59):
putting emotional pressure on Taylor and basically flipping
the roles so that Taylor's the one that's parenting.
But we're going to get to that alittle bit later in there later
scene because then we jump to Jeremiah and Belly who are
discussing how they want to break the news of their
engagement, especially to Conrad.

(08:21):
And they already know people aregoing to think they're crazy,
which, yeah, because you are. We cut to Conrad now.
And you know, he had just lost his job at the clinic in the
last episode. And Agnes is saying she's going
to help him get a job like at a lab or something like that with
her friend. She gives advice to Conrad to
not close himself off to his family and to just take baby

(08:44):
steps in seeing Belly so that he's not carrying that weight
for the rest of his life. And shockingly, he takes her
advice, which by the end of the episode, we know that was not
probably good for him. And I just wanted to take a
moment and see how do you feel about Agnes this season?
Because I feel like her dynamic with Conrad is like one of the

(09:05):
few relationships on the show that's like kind of not built on
chaos. When you think about how
everybody is connected on the show, I feel like they're
literally one of the only non chaotic like Perry.
OK, this is another one of thoselike weird unfinished
storylines. So like, who the hell is this
Agnes chick and why are we throwing her in in season 3?

(09:26):
Yeah, I I think that's a fair question to have.
I feel like the point of puttingher character in the show is to
maybe show the parallel of how Conrad is with Belly.
Because I think in that scene inparticular, she talks about, or
maybe it's another scene, but she talks about how she's been
in love with Conrad and that she's kind of had to move on

(09:47):
from that so that they can have a friendship.
And I think it's supposed to parallel what Conrad is supposed
to do with Belly. So I feel like that's the point
of her character. Also keep in mind up until this
point in the show, he's on the other side of the country.
Like who's he going to have scenes with?
I do always forget the fact thatthey're supposed to be in

(10:09):
college and Conrad is like, allegedly at Stanford.
I do like the fact that she kindof gives him some tough love.
Yeah, that's what Belly needs. That's literally what she needs.
She needs her own Agnes like. Belly needs a sledgehammer to
the face of tough love. This used to be the summer she
turns a new leaf, but I digress. So we shift back to Belly and

(10:35):
Taylor. After the coffee scene, we see
that Taylor kind of accepts thatthey're getting engaged, right?
And she's just being supportive now.
And then Belly asked Taylor to be her maid of honor in this
scene, and she says yes, obviously.
And that moment had me wondering, who is Jeremiah going
to ask to be his best man? Because in the books, he asked

(10:56):
Conrad. And I just think that would be
crazy. Like imagine walking down the
aisle and seeing your whole bodycount at the altar.
Like just staring back at you. That's a crazy sentence to see
your entire body count standing at the altar.
That is so true though. I genuinely think that I would

(11:16):
have to run. I would literally have to run
away and join the witness protection program if my entire
body count was standing at the end of the altar.
Like holy hell. I feel like people don't think
about how messy this whole love triangle is.
Like, yes, we know it's messy, but apply this situation to your
real life. You know there's a team Conrad's
and the team Jeremiah's, but if that was your friend, wouldn't

(11:39):
you tell your friend she should leave those men alone and find a
man that's an only child? Another really awkward situation
is after she accepts being maid of honor Taylor goes to leave
and she runs into Steven and Steven is not feeling home girl.
He barely looks at her and then for some reason Taylor's mom

(12:01):
decides to parent trap them. She decides to insert herself
into this situation and she calls Steven asking him to
review the salons finances that she owns.
And she tells him reach out to Taylor if you have any question.
And of of course he has questions.
You're messy. And he tells Taylor it would be

(12:22):
a miracle basically if the salonsurvives another month.
So Taylor's upset that her mom dragged Steven into just like
her messy home life. And she says thank you, but it
was inappropriate that my mom asked you to do that.
And she talks to her mom about the situation and she blames the
acts that she broke up with. Then she has the nerve to ask

(12:43):
Taylor, what should I do? Why are you asking your daughter
what to do about your business? And I'm going to be so mad if
Taylor cancels her New York tripto be a parent to her mom.
Like, that's really not cool. How do you feel about Taylor and
her mom's dynamic and the fact that Taylor is getting more
screen time? I talk about in my last episode

(13:06):
that I think Taylor and Steven are getting a lot of screen time
because they might be getting a spin off.
That's kind of my theory. I'm curious how you feel about
their dynamic and then her increased screen time.
It's spin off is T because I never thought about it that way,
but I would have really liked tohave this like background on
Taylor as a character like seasons ago because it would

(13:27):
have explained so much and why she was like kind of a
disheveled mess. But now like we're getting all
of this information in the last season.
And that's like why I'm having an issue with this because why
are we just now finding out thatTaylor's mom is kind of a
disaster? Like this could have made so
much sense and why Taylor's a mess and picking all of these
like bad men and making all these terrible decisions.

(13:48):
I really think if her and Stevendon't resolve their situation by
the end of the season, I fully convince they're going to get a
spin off. I honestly could see that now
that you say that the way that this story is going and the way
that it could progress just because of Stevens whole career
arc and that weird girl he workswith, like where's that going?

(14:09):
Do you think her and Stevens going to hook up?
1000% are you kidding? They're going to have like some
weird like work relationship hook up in like a conference
room that looks like it's in like a scene from Severance or
something. Oh my God.
And Taylor is going to lose her like absolute marble.
Yeah. What happens?
I don't remember, but where is Steven's internship?

(14:29):
I could not figure that out. I want to stay in New York but
I'm confused as to where everything is.
The way they bop around from location to location, you would
think that they're just all nextto each other.
And then Conrad's in California.I feel like they could do a
better job of making it clear where everyone is.
It would be interesting if he's in New York because if Taylor

(14:50):
also goes to New York, maybe we could see some drama between
Taylor and Mia if they have a. Spinoff This summer, I turned
professional. There you go.
But I'm going to get back to theplot, because now we get.
Basically the two. Last major scenes of this
episode, we start with Jeremiah reading his speech at Susannah's

(15:12):
dedication garden. It's emotional and heartfelt.
And then Conrad surprises everyone by joining the
festivities, and he and Belly have this weird kind of stare
off that like you could just feel they still love each other.
Why does no one react to these long stares?
Just it's no one else seeing them gaze at each other.

(15:33):
Like it feels like an eternity. Honestly.
As a viewer I'm like so when is it going to end?
They're all choosing to look away, it feels.
Yeah, I mean I would too becauseit was awkward as hell when they
went to hug each other. And Adam Fisher, who we hate on
this pod. I will never give up an
opportunity to share my hatred for that man.
He made it even more awkward when they were hugging because I

(15:55):
don't know if you remember he said all Conrads.
Really glad to have his little sister hanging around again.
One thing about Adam he could never read a room to save his
life. Why did he call Belly his little
sister when he knows that they dated?
Adam Fisher is a freak and not the fun kind, no, but again, I
will never give up an opportunity to crap on that man

(16:16):
after that awkward scene. Then we get to that infamous
Last Supper, which I think the episode is called, and on the
ride over, Belly and Jeremiah agree that they're not going to
tell their families about the engagement just yet, which
clearly only lasts about an hour.
Stephen and Conrad have a littleone-on-one combo that feels kind
of off. The two have clearly grown

(16:37):
apart, It's clear because of howforced the conversation feels.
After that awkward conversation, they sit down for their dinner
and Or is it lunch because the sun was out?
A brunch. It felt like a rich person
brunch. They sit down to eat and Laurel
says she's paying and Adam, who we hate being the douchebag he
is, orders the most expensive thing on the menu.

(17:00):
He gets the surf and turf, whichis $75.
And then Jeremiah gets the same thing.
And I just know in that moment, Laura was sitting there
thinking, this cannot be my daughter's life because this is
impacting my coins. Meanwhile, Conrad orders one of
the least expensive items on themenu.
We know why, right? I don't know if you know why,
but the show, they're really putting in little moments like

(17:24):
this to make Conrad look like the better choice.
And I'm curious, what did you think about this whole menu
interaction? First of all, Team Conrad for
the one. But that was so cute.
And sweet of him and I didn't even clock that until I saw it
on TikTok because my eyes are really bad so I couldn't even
see on the TV what the prices were.
But that was. So.

(17:46):
Cute. And then my heart literally
broke. But also, didn't Laurel have
some really successful book dealor something like that?
Or did I make that up? No, you're right, I was thinking
about that too, but I still think the show was intentionally
trying to show that Conrad stillgot the cheaper item, which
could also be insulting too if you think about it long enough.

(18:07):
If I go. Out to dinner with someone.
I'm not going to be like, Oh my God, can I get to wag you
$700.00 steak or whatever? But Laurel, you're not like,
poor girls acting as if she, like, lives in a tent under a
bridge. Like, come on.
Then we get the roast. I mean toast.
Adam gives like this little awkward speech thinking Laurel
for how the dedication went and then Laurel toast her kids

(18:31):
individually. Then Adam jumps in.
He loves hijacking a moment. I just want to say he loves
hijacking a moment because afterLaurel praises her kids, he then
jumps in to praise Conrad and inthe same breath calls Jeremiah A
super senior, which, listen, youknow, this is a Adam Fisher hate
account. But he kind of ate with that.

(18:52):
In all seriousness, it really did break my heart to see the
way he talked to Jeremiah because I know what it's like to
have a parent like that. And I think no one deserves
that. And the fact that he did that so
publicly disgusting. This is why we don't like this
man. I could tell in that moment,
Belly just felt so bad. She just watched Herman get
publicly dragged in front of like their entire family.

(19:15):
And let's not forget her ex. And she decides, you know what,
this is the perfect moment to announce our engagement.
I think she wanted to prove Jeremiah has big plans to like
the rest of them and that he hasstuff going on in his life and
deserves some respect. Not really sure how an impulsive

(19:35):
wedding was supposed to prove that, but I could kind of see
why everybody started laughing after that, except Conrad, who
kind of spirals. What did you think about that?
First, we're getting married. I can't believe that the dad
said that about Jeremiah, but also, you know, for a fact that
he was probably like, wait, I can't believe you said that
about Conrad. Oh, my God.

(19:57):
Like Conrad's so going to be a doctor, Like, yeah, that's my
man. And then he's like Jeremiah the
Super senior. And she's like.
I. Think I might have made a
mistake second guessing. And then she's like flirts out.
Well, we're engaged, and here's my like, teeny tiny little ring.
Speaking of the ring, I want to take accountability for posting
a meme making fun of that small diamond.

(20:19):
I understand that love isn't measured by the size of a
diamond. If I hurt anyone by calling the
ring small, just know that was never my intention.
I was trying to bring awareness and healing through 1 meme.
That was me showing restraint. I could have said Laurel spent
more money on that meal than Jeremiah did on the ring, but I

(20:40):
didn't. I could have said the seafood
tower had more carrot than the ring but I did it.
I even could have said belly better add a metal detector to
her wedding registry in case shedrops her ring or wants to find
one and upgrade but I didn't. So I just want to say if you

(21:02):
guys are canceling me for roasting A fictional character's
ring choice, just know my apology tour will be epic and
fully sponsored with merch. Matter of fact, everybody tag
Catbird, the maker of the ring so they can sponsor my apology
tour. That's all I'm going to say on
that. But in all seriousness, I'm not

(21:24):
here to shame the small diamond ring community.
Love should be defined by how weshow up in our relationships,
not by what's on our fingers. What matters most is commitment,
connection, and the death of thebond that you're building with
the love of your life. Which is why this whole thing
felt even more chaotic, because the moment she showed the ring,

(21:47):
the tension exploded at the table.
And meanwhile the servers are just here calmly setting down
the seafood tower like they didn't just walk into a family
meltdown in real time. And I honestly don't blame
Laurel for rushing to get up outof there, because I would have
done the same thing. Like, wouldn't you?
I think if I. Sat my family down at a brunch

(22:10):
of some sort with my hypothetical boyfriend and
showed them a ring and was like I'm getting engaged.
They would actually probably murder me on the spot.
The last scene we see Laurel forces Belly to come home with
her, and Belly agrees because Jeremiah says let's just both go
home with our respective families and try to get our

(22:32):
parents to come around to the idea of us getting married.
And then the episode ends with Conrad standing alone in the
parking lot next to his car, looking absolutely wrecked.
So now that we've got to the endof the episode, what did you
think about the ending? Oh my God.
I. Felt so sad for Conrad.
He was just standing there all alone and everyone forgot about

(22:55):
him. And it's like he came all the
way from California just for youguys to leave him in the parking
lot. But then again, I'm also
thinking about like that Taylor Swift song where it's like,
help, I'm still at the restaurant.
You know that one. I'm also a part time singer so
like it's whatever. No I'm kidding, I Can't Sing to
save my life. But I digress.
I genuinely felt so bad. And then Belly and Jeremiah

(23:17):
making out right after. It's like, guys, are you kidding
me? No one just read a room.
You caused this huge. Family blow up and you're like,
yeah, now's the time for us to get it on.
That's what turns you on, I think.
Honestly at this point everybodyis a little delusional.
I was like, I think, I think we've lost it like.
We lost the plot. We've lost.

(23:38):
We've lost the plot, guys. I'm actually surprised they
didn't have it raining. I feel like, Can you imagine
Conrad in the rain? They really would have ate with
that. No, because that would have been
way too cliche. I'm surprised there wasn't a
Taylor Swift song playing because they played Taylor Swift
in every single scene. Who is paying?
For this music budget and how can they afford this insane
music catalog? They were playing Chapel Rone

(23:59):
and Billy Eilish in the episode.I was like, Oh my God.
It's like hits. 100. I know it's going to be
interesting. You know, when we're all old and
decrepit. Well, I won't be.
Obviously, when some people are and we go back and watch this
show, it's going to feel like a time capsule of music and just

(24:20):
the vibes of this period of time.
So that is a wrap on this episode of Things.
