The Memphis chapter UH tiled Sigma. They donated some money
to help us get to New York. They were one
of the groups that help and I want to thank
them for their donation to us and that that helped
us get there. I mean, UH were public school. This
trip to New York is extremely expensive, especially being in
six days. Uh this is like double the length of

(09:34):
their normal UH competition because they had doubled the bands
and so it's extremely expensive. These kids don't are rich
and so UH that donations from the Memphis community is
what helped us to get there, get home and look
good doing.

the time go fund me, and that we had raised
the money.

(12:42):
and five jazz bands every student on private lessons. Uh,
they got me, they got mister Hunter, they have the
Memphis Jazz Workshop with Steve Lee.

proud of them. This journey we've been talking about and
that's still a performance. Obviously, they got the first place
statue and in addition to taking home the top prize
the w I Listeners, the band earned several standout honors
first place overall Outstanding Trumpet Section, Outstanding Trombone Section. That's
doctor Liddell's primary instrument in trumbone is that tuned in.

Speaker 6 (20:13):

Speaker 2 (20:17):

Speaker 3 (20:40):
It's just falling off the doc goal chart.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Man, but outold saxophone soloist.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
What am I forgetting?

Speaker 6 (20:48):
Outstanding Outstanding trombone Soloists Marquise and Outstanding trumpet solos as
well in uh Kingston.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Yeah, yeah, Marquis C right, Marquis C Marcy.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
And he wants to make sure everybody, No Marquis after
you're right with out you that's right? R qq e yes,
oh yeah you go.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
We're talking Central High School, the high school man, the
award winning jazz band in the house. Now when I
come back, we're taking phone calls. I'm gonna put the
hit sets on these gentlemen. You can ask them anything
you want to, all right, nine on one five three
five nine three for two eight hundred five zero three
nine three for two or eight three five three five
nine three for two, be right back.

Speaker 3 (21:30):
I love that call.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
When the voice of God says w D I like
what he does. That part just give me chills. We're back.
Ladies and gentlemen were talking to an award winning jazz
band of Central High School, home the Warriors, that big
school on Bellevue, AH. And they're doing some big things
at that big school. Now, before I get to the

(21:52):
phone lines, that's still a little history, doctor Ladell. The
reason why they call Central the high school is why
Central was.

Speaker 6 (22:03):
The first school in the city. Now that's that's actually
a disputed fact. It's considered the high school. So he
had the H on their on their letterman jackets were
still done. The H on our uniforms are. It's everywhere
in the school because we're the high school.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
Nobody is lobby. Nobody's lobby to making a C on
the U. They said, no, there's a lot of c's
out there. You wanna make sure where you put the
H of the I mean the first thing I saw,
first time I saw that head.

Speaker 3 (22:31):
It was decades ago. Of course, I said, they kind
of age. But I'm in Central and.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
Somebody kind of broke it down to me.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
You know, everywhere we go, people where's the age for.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Man?

Speaker 3 (22:45):
I like it though.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Okay, so we got that straight out of the way.
Let me make sure I got this taken care of
all right, not on one five three five nine three
four two eight hundred and five zero three nine three
four two or eight three three a three three five
three five nine three two. Let me go delicately and
fold line. We got some four waiting up in this thing.
Let me go here the im on it. You're first

(23:06):
on the radio, and you with our special guests.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
You're on the air.

Speaker 10 (23:10):
Go ahead, Okay, good morning everybody. So, uh, stand up bass?
Play there? Since uh a stand up baseds familia us
kind of like a vilin? Do you also play the dinin.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
Big violin? Go ahead, I'm tell you, Michael, go ahead.
Uh I only played bass.

Speaker 10 (23:39):
Oh but but would you be able to play a
violin since their simulus I.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
Think like the strings on violent are different. Stout up
to like, you know, like figure it out, but that
probably could just like no practice.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Yeah, you're trying to make a violin virtual also out
of matt But you know what, look one one instruments
about like six feet tall, the other about what two
v yeah, sixteen? But yeah, you know what, that's a
good question, though, Melvane, thank you so much man. Yeah, yeah,
that's how you do it. Back to the fall lines
in the radio, Who's next?

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Go ahead.

Speaker 12 (24:20):
I'm a fan of standing man because he believes in
delivering great radio Good morning.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
I received it, David.

Speaker 12 (24:29):
Yeah in the flex in the f I cannot believe
I'm calling. And in between a North Side Cougar and
a Central High Warrior has a missus proud messis technical
high school graduate.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
Yeah yeah, you know, the North.

Speaker 3 (24:49):
To the South Warriors Cougars and yellow jock. Yellow jacket said, hey,
put some put some respects on it.

Speaker 12 (24:59):
Let me say, I'm not gonna call y'all the high school.
I just say school because I school y'all a little.

Speaker 8 (25:05):
How about that.

Speaker 9 (25:05):
I have.

Speaker 12 (25:13):
Never been more proud to hear that news of uh
some Memphis students, Oh hello to the to the to
the to the band as well, students coming from Memphis,
home of the blues, as much as jazz artists revered

(25:34):
the blues going up to.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
New York and showing them how it's done.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
I'm a big jazz fan.

Speaker 12 (25:42):
That's my favorite music general, and I really am proud
of y'all and hope you're all the best and going forward,
I just had a couple of questions.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
I'd be gone, uh and I can.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
Hang up to the stand.

Speaker 9 (25:59):
What what?

Speaker 12 (26:00):
What are the band members favorite musicians? One person mentioned
Winton Marcella's who is the reason why I am a.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
Jazz fan quite honestly, And I put out and oh
what is it? What is that?

Speaker 12 (26:16):
And I put out in the universe when Reverend Whalen.

Speaker 4 (26:21):
Was in that I was unable to make the sensional concert.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
But I think.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
Impossible that we give you.

Speaker 12 (26:31):
A venue at the holler and Center or some place. Well,
I can come and pay to hear these talented members play.
So that's pretty much it.

Speaker 3 (26:41):
What oh, oh, what did y'all play?

Speaker 7 (26:43):
What?

Speaker 5 (26:43):
What?

Speaker 12 (26:43):
What a selections been to the day that y'all pay
y'all played?

Speaker 3 (26:47):
So I ain't gonna stand. I much appreciate you, hey da.

Speaker 6 (26:51):
First off, David, thank you so much for your kind words,
and we really appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (26:57):
This was for Memphis, man, That's the thing I said
on stage.

Speaker 6 (27:02):
It is something about the spirit of this city that
came out of these students while they played, and it
really showed the spirit.

Speaker 3 (27:10):
This is is deep.

Speaker 6 (27:11):
This goes back to the Manassas High School under Jimmy Lunsford.
Jimmy Lunsfords were of the greatest jazz big band leaders
there were.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
He just died atn early age. He died in nineteen
forty seven.

Speaker 6 (27:22):
I think that really, but he would probably be in
the same breakfast account Basie or Duke Ellington had he,
you know, lived a little longer. But that he started
the band in Manassas High School, took his students from
Manassas to New York and they grew up and they
played in the Cotton Clude originally the Chickasaw Syncopates and
then became the Jimmy Lusford Band.

Speaker 3 (27:45):
But that is like we took that same path. He
talked about the blues.

Speaker 6 (27:50):
This that is the foundational foundation of all popular music,
not just jazz, but everything.

Speaker 10 (27:57):
It is.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
Blues permeates all. It's even found in hip hop, believe
it or not. Wow.

Speaker 6 (28:01):
And uh so that thank you for that. So the
songs we played, we played weeb O Barbada. I know,
it's a funny name. It's kind of a play off
the word off the word b bops Gary Mulligan's Jerry
Mulligan song.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
Uh. Then we played Rockaby River.

Speaker 6 (28:16):
It's got a bluesy songs Duke Ellington, and then the
last one was Feetbone. That's when we played at the finals.
Uh the final round was feetbone. Uh the one that
did knocked them dead. Ye that feetbone?

Speaker 2 (28:31):
Like that Jackson, I the tak a few more calls
in the lines lighted up like a Christmas tree in there.
Let's go here, water in the radio.

Speaker 8 (28:42):
Yeah, go ahead, walk on, flock on real quick mind
you then gave us two days of extended mix. Good morning,
Doctor Lidell and the students.

Speaker 3 (28:54):
I'll be quick.

Speaker 8 (28:55):
My song graduated, My song graduated from Central High School
in two thousand and four. I remember, like yesterday. That
was a great phenomenal school.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
I will be quick.

Speaker 8 (29:08):

I'm like David, I want to know where and when
you guys are gonna perform for the public. And man,
it ain't nothing like a live band. I love a
live thing, especially Jays. I love Bronie James. I think

(29:28):
you got some young Bronie James in the studio. Young
guys which like that. Who's gonna mount to Bronie James?

Speaker 7 (29:35):
A man out.

Speaker 8 (29:36):
Standing for a phenomenal job. If you can just tell
me where y'all won't be when y'all won't be nicked world,
so the public once again can come out and enjoy
the marvelous band. You got one more gain. Congratulations, Doctor
Lidell and the students of be Central High School got
the lockstand words.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
Yeah, so we do have something lined up.

Speaker 6 (30:02):
It's not the dates are not Insterstone, but we're trying
to do something to levit shell. The caveat to that is,
you know, school's about to be out and these our kids,
uh seniors graduate today tonight actually, so give it up
for them.

Speaker 2 (30:17):
Yeah, popping circumstances. Y'all playing by the way.

Speaker 6 (30:25):
At this time, but they are. But but we do
have something playing because these kids want to play together.

Speaker 3 (30:31):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (30:32):
But on the subject of that, these three gentlemen here
are also partner. These are these kids are not They
got their own group many they have to tell you about.
They got their own group that's separate from.

Speaker 3 (30:43):
The school Montgomery Tree. They called themselves Sole Ingredients, the Lego.

Speaker 2 (30:54):
That's all right, Look, let me take another phone call.
