(00:01):
Hi I'm Jem and this is the criminal crack.
Usually I have my Co host Victoria here with me.
However unfortunately due to some technical gremlins that
have been in our system lately, this bonus episode that I'm
bringing you has already been recorded and failed epically.
The content was fabulous but therecording was terrible.
(00:24):
So in order to get this out in time for you, I am recording it
myself. So this is to tell you all about
Laurie Valo, her background and the criminal cases she's already
been involved in because her third trial began today.
And I did ideally want this out before now, but things happen,
you know? So what I thought I would do is
(00:47):
tell you information really about how Laurie got to where
she is now and why she keeps having to go to court.
The first I personally heard about this case was when a new
story came out in 2019. It regarded a man who had shot
someone dead, allegedly in self defence, at his sister's home.
At the time I remember being really intrigued about it and
(01:09):
wanted to learn more, but there was nothing for months and then
suddenly news broke about the disappearance of two children.
I then began to realise that thetwo cases were connected and the
reason they were connected was because of Lori Vallow.
Laurie and Noreen Cox was born on June the 26th, 1973 in San
Bernardino in Southern California to parents Barry Lynn
(01:32):
and Janice Lecox. She was the 4th of their four
five children, Stacey, Alexander, Adam, Laurie and then
her younger sister Summer. The family, including Laurie,
were devout LDS members. LDS is the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints. As Laurie grew, so did her
(01:53):
faith. According to an old school
friend, Laurie would attend religious education classes
before her regular school day began.
Now, I can't imagine going to school before school, but she
did. Now I'll be honest, before I
started looking into this case, I had no real clue about what
the Church of Latter Day Saints was or what it meant to be LDS.
But I quickly realised that for me to fully understand what goes
(02:15):
on in these cases, I needed to do a bit of research.
I'm going to share what I find out to our social medias.
You'll get references and you can just have a look through and
see what you think. But the main take away that I
have about LDS members is that they follow the Bible, the
regular Bible and the Book of Mormon.
(02:36):
And a lovely friend of mine who is LDS called Crystal also
shared the following with me. Quote.
Where we differ is that we ascribe to the belief that God
still uses prophets to speak forhim just as he has since the
beginning of time. We believe that prophets guides
the current church. She followed this up by saying
quote prophets are human and still fallible, which I find
(02:57):
really interesting so I thought I would share.
So basically Jesus was the initial prophet that can only be
one prophet at a time, like alive at a time and they have a
prophet now and that prophet hastheir own apostles.
So the friend that told us aboutLaurie and her religious
education lessons before school also said that she was funny,
friendly, and treated everyone the same when it came to their
(03:19):
peers. She was very popular and was the
flyer in their school cheerleading squad, which is
basically the poor bugger at thetop that gets flung about.
I think their squad was called handout and they would regularly
hang out at the Cox household chilling and swimming.
She was known to be a diligent student as well.
She got good grades, and although she was very pretty and
(03:41):
very charming, unlike her peers, she didn't start dating until
her senior year. Now she had a plan in mind.
She wanted to keep her head down, study, and she hoped that
she'd be accepted after high school by the Brigham Young
University in Provo, UT, which is basically a private
university which is owned by theLDS Church.
It's also called BYU. Now these plans appear to have
(04:02):
fallen by the wayside, and shortly after she graduated, she
married her school sweetheart, Nelson Yates, and began training
to become a hair stylist. Yates, it would turn out, came
from out with the LDS community, which perhaps explains why the
union was so short lived and they divorced quickly.
According to the Netflix documentary Sins of the Mother,
(04:23):
divorced women who are LDS are kind of looked down upon so it
isn't unusual for them to remarry quite quickly, which is
what Laurie did. Hubby number 2 came in the form
of 23 year old Texan man from Travis County called William
Lagio. William I don't know how to say
this. Lag LAGIOIA, he doesn't really
(04:45):
come into this again so sorry William.
She was married to him for around 2 years and during this
time she gave birth to her firstchild, a son called Colby.
Marriage #2 ended in divorce on the 25th of February 1998.
Joseph, Anthony or Anthony, Ryanor Joe was Laurie's next beau
(05:05):
and Colby said that initially Joe was outgoing and funny and
he was so excited to be moving in with him as it would mean
that he, his mum and Joe would become a family and this was
apparently all this little boy had ever really wanted.
Joe's family welcomed both Laurie and Colby with open arms,
and when Laurie fell pregnant with their daughter, baby Ty
Lee, everyone was just delighted.
(05:27):
Kobe revelled in his role as BigBrother and probably thought
that this was it, he had his happy family ending.
However, it wasn't too long before things changed.
Harrowingly, Kobe shared in a Dateline episode aired May the
2nd, 2020 that not only was Joe physically abusive towards him,
but he'd also sexually abused him, which is just awful.
(05:49):
I wish people would look more into the people that they're
meeting before they introduce them to children.
Not that I'm saying that's the only time it will happen, but
you know what I mean. One day in 2005, after four
years of marriage, Laurie packedup and left you for good.
According to her ex sister-in-law, it was common
knowledge that this had been a domestic abuse situation that
(06:10):
she did not blame Laurie for fleeing.
So she knew her brother was domestically abusing Laurie.
She and many others would go on to explain that Laurie was a
very loving mother. So when Colby felt safe and
finally realised that they were not going back to Joe, he opened
up and told his mother about thesexual abuse.
He now believes that this was his mother's turning point.
(06:32):
She has since been very open with people that when she heard
what had happened to her little boy, she knew she had a choice
to make. Would she murder Jo Ryan or
would she learn more into her faith, the LDS church in the
hope that it would guide her? Laurie quite sensibly chose her
faith and began attending her temple more.
(06:52):
But I'm guessing from what I know about her now that she
would not have minded if someoneelse took Ryan out for her.
In the documentary I mentioned earlier there is footage of
Laurie's brother Alex trying to make it as a comedian.
He's on stage performing his routine and he tells the
audience a story about how he got into trouble with the police
for tasering his brother-in-law in the testicles and we find out
(07:13):
he was a paedophile. When the audience laughs he's
really quick to tell them that it's a true story but I don't
think they believed him. Honestly this whole section of
the documentary is cringe. It was true though.
In 2007 Alex was arrested and spent 90 days in gaol after
attacking Joe Ryan after learning about the abuse.
Just in FYI, Alex becomes a hugepart of what goes on later so
(07:36):
remember this bit as it's a really good bit of insight into
who he is. During the Ryan divorce, Laurie
brought up the domestic and sexual abuse claims, meaning
that lost any custody rights. I was no longer in contact with
Laurie or the children, but I will be talking about him a
little later on in the episode. After fleeing, Laurie, Colby and
(07:56):
Tylie moved about a lot. They were in different States
and changed schools and churchesoften, while Laurie, for her
part, took on hairdressing jobs to see them three.
And this was how Laurie was introduced by a hair client to
Charles Valo, who has been described as a lovely Southern
gent. Family and friends would later
(08:17):
say that from day one the pair go on like a house on fire,
spending a lot of time together and appear to be besotted with
each other. Colby has said that while he
does believe his mother loved Charles, the fact that he could
provide financial stability it was probably also really
appealing to her. Like her first husband, Charles
was not LDS, but he made the decision to convert to be with
(08:40):
her, something he took very seriously, more seriously than
Laurie would, it turns out. The couple married in February
2006 and created a beautiful bigblended family with Laurie,
Colby and Ty Lee being joined byCharles and his sons from a
previous relationship. In 2013, the couple extended
(09:00):
their family even further when they adopted Joshua Jackson,
known as JJ when I think he was around two or three.
JJ was the grandson of Charles'ssister and brother-in-law, Kay
and Larry Woodcock, and was therefore the grand nephew of
Charles. JJ was born and was immediately
sent to the neonatal ward due tohis biological mother's
(09:21):
substance abuse. It's because of this that the
Woodcocks have brought him up since he was small.
His father was Kay's son and he also struggled with substance
abuse and quite frankly was unable unfit to look after a
newborn. Kay and Larry are an incredibly
loving pair who would have done this forever, but when they saw
how much Laurie valued being a mum and how she and Charles
(09:44):
interacted with GJ, they began to realise that they weren't
getting any younger and perhaps JJ would have a better life with
them. JJ's whole family clearly adored
him and when he moved in with Charles and Laurie, Ty Lee
especially doted on him. She would often even refer to
him as her own child. She was his protector.
(10:04):
They were like a little team together and there are so many
pictures of the two together, which given what happens to
them, is so heartbreaking to see.
Now. Around this time, Laurie began
going to Temple multiple times aday, which is quite unusual.
She became heavily involved in the LDS community and began
idolising the prophets. She would cover her homes in
(10:27):
pictures of the temples and soonshe began telling people that
she was hearing voices telling her what path in life to take.
Now I'll be honest, while I findthis a little strange and out of
the blue initially, I've done a lot of research on LDS and this
is in line with the 7th of 13 articles of faith, which are
basically the rules that those in the LDS faith follow #7
(10:49):
states that they believe people have the gifts of speaking in
tongues, as well as interpretation of tongues,
prophecy, revelations, visions, etcetera.
But I for one do not believe that Laurie has any gifts.
Just so you know. I'll share the full 13 to our
socials for you as you may want to refer to them in other
instances of of these cases. Laurie alleged that this has
(11:10):
happened before when she shared with friends and family that
she'd been told to go on the TV show Wheel of Fortune.
Do not ask. There is a clip of it in the
documentary, but honestly, what kind of prophet is going to tell
someone to go on a game show? She seriously makes my teeth
itch. In 2014, Laurie said that she'd
(11:31):
been spoken to again and that she had been told that she and
her family had to, quote, move to Hawaii.
I have no idea what Charles thought of the reason behind it,
but at some point that year thisis exactly what they did.
She was in the island of Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle,
part of the Hawaiian archipelago, to become their
home. Laurie, a believer in fate,
would excitedly share that she got JJ Kawaii in her happy life,
(11:54):
all by Marion Charles. The family quickly settled into
island life and apparently ran asmall home rental business
there. But I know Charles was a
financial advisor or insurance broker, but I think he probably
did all right financially. Well, I'll say probably because
remember his financial stabilitywas important to Laurie.
Well, sources say she took full advantage of this fact and of
(12:16):
Charles's character by having him pay for her, Alex, and
possibly even other family members.
I read in one source that he paid for 22 cell contracts but
rather than buying homes they would live in rental properties
that they were showing to clients rather than pay the rent
themselves. They would move around a lot and
it said they were able to do this easily as they had very few
personal effects because the homes always had to be ready to
(12:39):
be shown to clients which doesn't sound particularly
homely. It's all bonkers to me and
personally from research I've done I don't think it's how
Charles would have wanted to live but maybe they had to
because of the money situation. I'm pretty sure with JJ being
autistic it would have made moresense to find somewhere to
really settle. Friends and family in both the
US mainland and Kawaii had always felt like Laurie and
(13:01):
Charles were the perfect couple, but over the years it became
clear to many that this might not be true.
Laurie would say to people that not only did she feel
spiritually Charles was beneath her and that she wanted someone
different that was a better match with her, but she would
also talk a lot of smack about him saying he didn't earn enough
and that she believed he was cheating on her and she had
(13:21):
proof. She's never been able to show
this proof, so take that one with a pinch of salt.
In fact, it would be worth taking everything she says with
a healthy dose of cynicism. Going back to our issue with his
spirituality, or lack thereof, consider this.
Charles only converted to LDS for Lori, so instead of accusing
him of being spiritually weaker than her, shouldn't she just
(13:43):
instead of try to help him learnand then maybe he would be
caught at her level? Charles doesn't seem to have
been aware at this time that Lori was talking about him like
this behind his back or that shewas unhappy with him, and that
genuinely makes me really sad because everything I've read has
been about how kind hearted and lovely he was her.
Charles also couldn't have knownthat the seeds of discord were
(14:05):
about to be sown and Laurie was about to change more than he or
anyone else could ever believe possible.
Originally, I had planned to share more information about the
Church of Latter Day Saints in this episode, but for the sake
of time, I'll just put everything I have and the
reference is up for you to read. And I'll point out where Laurie
deviates from the true meaning of LDS.
(14:27):
As I said earlier, there are 13 main tenants or laws that all
LDS are expected to adhere to intheir daily lives.
This includes the newly converted Charles.
These were the same rules that his wife had followed too.
But things began to change in Charles.
He was worried, and rightfully so.
I will say that I think it's completely normal that Laurie's
(14:49):
entire world view was rocked after Colby's revelation about
what Joe Ryan did to him. And yes, I think that Laurie
leaning more interfaith was understandable.
Her anxiety over her children's safety was probably through the
roof at all times. But at what I cannot reconcile
at all is what happened next. In 2015, Laurie began reading a
(15:11):
series of books written by Chad Dabell, another member of the
LDS Church. It was called Standing in Holy
Places. I checked out on Goodreads and
the premise of this fiction collection is that the end of
the world is coming. But never fear, a new world
called Verily will take its place, but only if the Saints
gather. If they do gather, once they
(15:32):
arrive in Verily they will builda city called New Jerusalem and
begin again. Now, this is a very odd scenario
for a member of LDS to write about in the 1st place, since
they not only do not believe in the end of this world, this
apocalyptic kind of thing, they also do not believe that anyone
ascends to another world. So it's complete poppycock to
me, based on the synopsis alone. It looks like a terribly written
(15:56):
story to be honest. And even though it's labelled as
fiction, it's alleged by friendsof Chad's that he considers his
writings to be a work of art that should be considered
scripture. He believes that this scenario
is legitimately going to happen. We're going to come back to
this, but to stay within the timeline, let's move on.
Clearly Laurie and I aren't on the same page because not only
(16:20):
did she read this garbage, it had her engrossed and the effect
on her was profound. These books sent her down a
rabbit hole of religious concepts that were becoming more
and more radicalised and I genuinely don't think she will
ever come out of. I think she had probably read
everything Chad Abel had writtenbefore she ever met him and I
believe that this was the point she went over the top.
(16:42):
It was this change in attitude and faith that I think led to
Laurie becoming what she's knownas now.
Some people call her the Doomsday Mother and well yes,
Doomsday does describe her in part.
I don't believe she is fit to wear the title of Mother, so I
refuse to call her that. Over the next three years,
during which the Valos moved back to mainland states, Laurie
(17:05):
began to seek out more and more information about things which
took her away from the LDS faith.
She immersed herself in books and podcasts which discuss
topics that don't align with theLDS faith at all.
Some of the podcasts she listened to were, by the way,
hosted by people who had essentially been excommunicated
by the LDS. And not only did she listen to
(17:25):
them, she would also go on to talk on them.
One of her new areas of interestwas near death experiences,
which did I mention? LDS do not believe in
reincarnation in any form. Good Lord.
Would it surprise you if I told you now that Chad has had two of
these experiences and it's what he's built his career as an LDS
(17:49):
public speaker and author on? No.
Well, I didn't think it would. One of these experiences
allegedly happened while he was Cliff jumping, which makes me
laugh. He claims that right after he
jumped, he hit his head on a rock and was knocked
unconscious. Then he landed in water, still
unconscious and probably dead. But miraculously he realised
(18:11):
himself. And guess what?
Now he can bring visions back from the future.
Wow, imagine that now. It's not that LDS don't believe
in clairvoyance. What they don't believe in is
I'm going to say it loud for thecheap seats coming back from the
dead. Since this experience, he
(18:32):
believes God has chosen to speakto him this way.
Just I can't with this guy. He just genuinely thinks he's
all that and a bag of chips. Laurie obviously fully believed
and believes everything this mansays, and at this point she is
committed to preparing for the end of the world and trying to
bring her friends and family on board.
(18:52):
And when I say prepping, I don'tjust mean buying tent goods and
toilet roll in bulk. It's so much more than this.
Laurie also began to attend events with women she had
befriended LDS women who she encouraged to attend events with
her. Melanie Gibb and Dilemma Past
the ends were two of these womenand I believe Melanie Gibb was
(19:15):
befriended in a tactical move byLaurie to get to Chad as she
knew they were already acquainted.
In October 2018, the three womenattended a conference together
called Preparing a People. These events were set up to
prepare people for the second coming of Christ.
Now interestingly, these conferences were arranged and
attended mainly by LDS members, but they they were never
(19:39):
actually affiliated with the church itself.
This is because a lot of the discussions and talks were
around things that the LDS don'tactually believe in or condone,
including that they don't believe that Jesus is coming
back for a second go. Remember, in the LDS community,
prophets are human and there's only one at a time.
Chad Abel was one of the featured speakers at this event,
(20:02):
and it's been reported that Laurie made a beeline for him
and had her new friend introducethem.
These friends said that Laurie flirted with Chad for the entire
conference. In fact, in her second court
case, it would come out that thepair began to communicate
secretly with each other straight after.
She actually even used a fake e-mail like e-mail address
(20:22):
pretending to be her own husbandasking to talk about writing a
book together to cover up their relationship.
I mean honestly, Oh my God. I forgot to say Chad was married
to and had five children. I don't think I hear surprise.
I genuinely don't have time to go into everything about him,
but here are the basics. Chad Guy Dabell was 50 years old
(20:43):
when he met Laurie. He had grown up in an LDS family
in Provo, UT. He attended the BYU Brigham
Young University for a year, buthe dropped out after a year to
become a missionary for two years.
He married his first girlfriend,Tamara or Tammy Douglas, in
1990, and they went on to have five children, Garth, Emma,
(21:05):
Seth, Leah and Mark, who have. Yeah, they've stood up for their
father. Any who, as I said, he began
life in the LDS phase. But Tammy's sister's husband,
Jason, their surname is. I've seen it as Gwilliam, which
I've never heard of before. I don't know if it's an
autocorrect or not an autocorrect.
(21:26):
A mistake. But anyway, Jason said that in
Chad's late 30s, he noticed a change and by the time Chad was
between 4243, he was in full preparation for the end of the
world. In 2015, Chad had said on 2
separate occasions he had heard voices telling him to move his
family from Springville, UT to Rexboro, Idaho.
(21:48):
That is where they needed to be.When the time came he wanted
Jason and his wife Samantha to join them, but she wasn't keen
and apparently neither was Tammy.
This LED Chad to label her as DART, which you'll understand
shortly. 2 concepts that Chad touts or touted was that he had
the ability to tell if a person had special gifts based on their
(22:09):
vibrations and he also claimed that he could tell people how
many past lives they have had just by looking at them, which
is quite something because again, LDS do not believe in
reincarnation. I actually don't think he
believes in this one himself as I know something you don't and
it's so cringe. It's that he used this ability
(22:31):
as a basis for a chat up line attheir first meeting.
He told Laurie how many times she had been here before and
that they were married and all of them were.
Honestly, who falls for that? The best thing about it is he'd
also told Melanie Gibb the same and probably more other women.
So hey baby. Oh, we were married in a past
(22:52):
life. Anyway, the other Chad only
concept I want to tell you about, which is very important
and has been proved as very dangerous, even fatal going
forward, is this one. Chad categorises all people into
one of two categories, affiliating each person with
either God or Satan. Hence light or dark.
(23:13):
He reckons he's can read people and can tell which of those two
he they are. Now people who are light are
good people and they will come with him when the end happens.
And those who are dark are bad. And wait for this bit.
If you're dark it means the trueyou is gone and your body has to
be taken over by a zombie. I shit you not so sorry
(23:36):
Samantha, you're a you're obviously a zombie.
Laurie fell for this BS hook line and sinker and now 100%
believes everything he does. Although she will deny and has
denied in court that they ever call people zombies.
She'll say this didn't happen till the cows came home despite
there being witness testimonies and texts to prove of their
(23:57):
wise. After the conference, Laurie's
husband Charles had to go away. Remember Charles?
Yeah she's married too. Had to go away on a business
trip and so she decided to make the best of a free house for the
weekend and invited a group of her LDS girlfriends over for
like an overnight sleepover. Get to get there sort of thing.
I'm not sure how many were there, but one non girlfriend
(24:19):
was there. Surprise, it's Chad.
He was there to share his teachings and this became the
first of many meetings with themall.
Eventually a little religious group was formed with Chad at
the helm. They called themselves the
Church of the First Born. Oh, and sidebar, Chad and Laurie
bumping uglies. At this point they're lovers.
(24:41):
Church of the first born members.
That's really difficult for me to say for some reason included
the gruesome twosome Milani Boudreaux, who's spoiler alert,
you're going to hear a lot abouther in the coming month.
Melanie Gibb Alex Cox, who remembers Laurie's brother
Zelena Pasten's who was at the conference.
Now she later gets together withAlex and they marry.
(25:02):
The main take away from this group according to April Raymond
who is an ex friend of Lorry's is that they believed they were
here to collect the 144,000 people who are prophesized to
survive the apocalypse. 144,000 people that these that this
little club have to well let's just say it, it's a cult and
(25:26):
have to take to the next World. Talk about egomaniacs.
Laurie told lucky old April thatshe was one of them, but April
basically told her thanks but nothanks.
I bet that just killed Laurie. April will now be dark.
During this time, Charles Vallowwas becoming increasingly
worried concerned about his wife.
(25:48):
He was worried sick and couldn'tunderstand where his funny,
loving wife has gone. She was now full of all these
ideas that he quite frankly thought were crazy.
Also, unbeknownst to him, Lauriewas still talking crap about and
behind his back telling family members that he was accusing her
of having an affair with Chad. I mean, what?
(26:08):
What would make anybody think that?
And she believed that actually this was because Charles himself
was having an affair. And she dropped these little
bits and pieces of information to make Charles, who by the way
her family loved, seem like the bad guy in something that
doesn't actually sound like the compliment it's probably meant
to do. Her mother actually said that
(26:31):
Charles was, quote, the best of Laurie's husbands.
Thanks. Thanks for that mother-in-law.
Her mother even remembers Lauriesaying things like this on a day
in January 2019 when Laurie had professed to find proof that
Charles was cheating. There's no proof.
She used this as an excuse for cancelling the flights.
(26:52):
He was meant to get home from a business, from a business trip
he'd been on in Texas. She hid his truck and she got
rid of all his clothes and stole$35,000 from joint bank account.
This was all for revenge becausehe cheated even though he didn't
cheat and she was cheating. According to reports, in
February 2019, Laurie confrontedCharles saying that quote she no
(27:15):
longer cared about him or JJ before vanishing for 58 days.
During this time, Charles filed for divorce and he stated that
Laurie had made threats to his life, stolen his truck and his
money. And he also told them that
according to Laurie, he was not Charles value anymore.
He was a dark spirit and his body had been taken over by a
(27:38):
zombie called Ned Schneider. Sorry, but Ned Schneider, why
would you pick that name? I I Yeah, I don't know where
they came up with that one. Now, obviously to the police,
this made poor Charles sound a bit bonkers, but it is true.
And we do have statements to back that up.
He also alleged that she had told him that she was, quote, a
(28:00):
God assigned to carry out the work of the 144,000 at Christ's
second coming. Now, this was apparently due to
take place in July 2020. And, well, I don't think it
happened. I could be wrong.
And she threatened to murder himif he got in the way of her
mission. April's statement, for example,
would certainly support her coming out with things like
this. Because Laurie said it to her
(28:22):
too. Charles later withdrew his
divorce and one for a protectionorder that his lawyer had
actually told him to do and thiswas because at this point he
loved her and he did believe he could get her back.
That his police body Cam footagewhere it was clear to see.
Charles was terrified of what was going on with her.
He was scared for his children and even changed his life
(28:44):
insurance policy in the same month making his sister Kay
Woodcock a sole beneficiary. Removing Laurie.
Laurie didn't know this until she phoned up to try and claim
it and that call is online and just haha.
Charles tried to get help from Laurie's family but she had
warned them all that Charles wasjust making stuff up and to
(29:05):
ignore him and they all did. I guess because Lauria had had
so many husbands beforehand, this wasn't unusual for her to
move on to the next one. Despite numerous emails and
texts, nobody would listen to him or help him.
No one except her brother Adam. Adam did believe Charles and in
July 2019 he even arranged to fly out to Arizona when he knew
(29:27):
Charles was going to be there too and talk to the rest of the
family and they were going to try and do an intervention with
Laurie. On July 10th, Charles went out
in Arizona and he went on a first date and he was finally
looking forward to his future. The reason he was in Arizona,
apart from the intervention, wasto collect JJ to take him to
school and he was really positive about this upcoming
(29:49):
intervention. He no longer wanted to be with
Laurie, but he wanted to be in his children's lives.
He'd find out all about Chad andLaurie's affair and had even
emailed Chad's wife Tammy letting her know too.
On July the 1st, 2019, he let Laurie know that he and Tammy
were going to be meeting up in person.
Now it wasn't until a lot later that we find out that the first
(30:10):
message to Tammy had been opened, deleted, and then
Charles had been blocked, and that Laurie and Chad were now
communicating almost exclusivelyon burner phones.
So the fact that Charles thoughthe was going to meet up with
Tammy must have been arranged inan e-mail, but it obviously
wasn't Tommy who responded because effectively, Charles was
(30:33):
blocked. On the morning of July the 11th,
2019, Charles made his way to Laurie's home in the truck.
By the way, he'd finally gotten back from her.
He was really excited to see JJ,but obviously nervous about
seeing Laurie, who wouldn't be nervous about seeing their ex at
pickup. When he arrived at her home, he
realised that Alex was there andhe texted Adam who was in the
(30:56):
area saying Alex is here now. Adam was confused about this as
he had arranged to stay with Alex the night before and Alex
was meant to pick him up actually from the airport.
But when he arrived in town, notonly did Alex not turn up to
collect him, he also hadn't answered the phone once.
So Charles approached the home, got JJ and buckled him into the
(31:16):
truck, according to the trial. So again, pinch of salt.
Laurie says she took his phone from him and wouldn't give it
back to him. She alleged that Charles got
angry and aggressive and when her daughter Tylee heard the
commotion, she came through witha baseball bat.
She further alleged that Charlestook the bat from Tylee and
began swinging it. It was in this moment that she
(31:37):
said Alex came from the back of the house and shot Charles in
self defence. This by the way, includes shots
where we know for a fact it's proven that Charles was on the
floor. Then Laurie took Tylee and JJ.
They went for fast food, they went to Walmart, and then they
took J to school. Now all of this was done
(32:00):
basically to set up some form ofalibi, which is weird because
it's after the fact. If we go through the court cases
at any point, I'll tell you moreabout this.
But then she arrived back at herhome when the police and 1st
responders had arrived. Afterwards, it was determined
that Laurie had found out about the intervention ahead of time
and that after Charles was shot, she and Alex had texted for
(32:23):
around 40 minutes while she was doing all these bits and pieces,
getting fast food and going to Walmart and everything before he
called 911. They were talking about when he
should actually make the phone call.
And when he's asked to do CPR bythe 9/11 responder, he pretends
to do it. Poor Charles didn't stand a
chance. He had no idea what he was
(32:43):
walking into. And as much as you think
something would happen here, no arrests were made at all at this
time. There is so much more I can tell
you about this. So much came out.
Three. Laurie's last court case.
But today's not the day. This is long enough and we're
still not finished, so I'm just going to forge on.
In August of the same year, Laurie was on the move again.
(33:05):
And can you guess where she was headed?
Well, Rexbra Idol of course for the end of the world.
Can you actually believe she's setting up home near her bit on
the side? And his wife and kids.
Oh shoot, I forgot to mention, Chad's now a widow because his
wife Tammy had sadly passed on October the 19th, 2019.
According to Chad Daybell, on the evening of the 18th of
(33:28):
October 2019, Tammy had been ill.
He stated that she was up in thenight coughing and being sick.
He said that you'd helped her back to their bed because isn't
he just the complete gentleman? And then the next morning he was
woken up by Tammy falling off the bed.
And this was because when she did, she pulled the covers off
him with her. Brenda Dye was the coroner and
(33:51):
she got this information when she arrived at the Daybell home.
While she was there, she also spoke to Chad who informed her
that Tammy had been suffering for some months from low blood
pressure and would often faint. He said she didn't like to go to
the doctor and prefer to treat herself at home with natural
remedies. Now this information, along with
finding homoeopathic medicines in the home, LED her to complete
(34:14):
a medical certificate stating that Tammy died of pulmonary
edoema due to a cardiac event. So basically she said that it
was natural causes. After Tammy's death, Chad
wouldn't allow an autopsy and Tammy was buried within three
days of passing. If this all doesn't seem a bit
odd, what about the fact that just 10 days earlier, she had
(34:36):
reported to the police that she'd been shot at?
Two weeks after Tammy's death, Laurie and Chad secretly married
on the beach in Hawaii. 2 weeks. And they were wearing rings that
Laurie had bought using Charles Valo's Amazon account after he
died but before Tammy did. Don't worry, we'll come back to
this, but suspiciously. Also in 2018, Joe Ryan was found
(35:01):
dead in his apartment days afterhe'd had a cardiac event.
Now this sounded suspicious to me but as of 2020 this is
definitively being ruled as natural causes, though I still
still doesn't sit right with me.So now Laurie, the kids and her
brother Alex were in Rexburg, IDand were settled by the end of
(35:21):
August. Now while the kids were there
one really important family member was missing and this was
JJ's service dog Bailey a goldendoodle which Charles had bought
to help his son who if you remember had autism.
Now, according to Bailey's trainer, Neil Mestas, Bailey
quote helped JJ sleep through The Tonight.
JJ was just delighted with his new best friend and I can only
(35:44):
imagine he was a comfort after his dad was gone down.
They'd been together now for about a year and a half, so he
would just be perfect, wouldn't he?
But no, Laurie sold Bailey abouta month after Charles's death
for $2500. And if this makes you sick to
your stomach, you're not alone, people.
And I'm sorry to say, this storygets so much worse.
Laurie's new neighbours would later share footage from their
(36:06):
home camera system showing JJ behaving in a way they felt was,
quote, erratic outside. And this was because Laurie
often left him out there for long stretches of time on his
own with no adult supervision atall.
He was 7 and autistic. What?
What was she doing and where wasTy Lee?
Laurie honestly, in my opinion, is a beast.
(36:26):
At some point, the neighbours confronted Laurie about this and
she told them in an offhand manner that JJ was, quote, her
niece's drug baby. This woman was meant to be his
mother. He he left the Woodcocks to be
with this woman and she was meant to be his mother.
It's so sad. It was midway through September
2019 when family members of Ty Lee and JJ began to question
(36:49):
where they were because following their move to Rexburg,
ID, getting in touch with eitherchild have become increasingly
difficult for everybody, most especially Kay and Larry
Woodcock. Now, no matter how hard they
tried, Laurie always had a reason why they couldn't talk on
the phone visit or FaceTime withJJ, a feeling that something was
really very wrong. They reported the missing.
(37:10):
Now the police did investigate their whereabouts, but Laurie
refused to talk except to say that her dead husband's family
were just causing trouble. This was the party line her Aunt
Chad would tell people. I mean, it's a simple matter,
but it is a little bit complicated to do with custody
and we don't want to get you involved.
On September the 24th, 2019, Laurie called JJ's school, which
(37:32):
was Rexburg Elementary School, and let them know she was
removing him as she had decided to homeschool him instead.
And Kylie, she was never registered for school after the
move, but Laurie had been telling everybody she was a
student at BYU Idaho again, the Brigham Young University.
The last photograph of Tylee wastaken during a family trip with
her mother, her uncle Alex and JJ to the Yellowstone National
(37:56):
Park. And I'm sure that was the 8th of
September. She was never seen alive again.
JJ was seen on a doorbell video playing with a friend on
September the 17th, 2019 and he was seen attending school on
September the 20th. The last confirmed physical bit
my tongue there, sorry. Physical sighting of JJ was on
(38:17):
September the 22nd, 2019 at around 10:30 at night.
Melanie Gibb and her partner David Warwick were actually
staying at Laurie's home and they saw Alex Cox carry JJ up to
bed in the morning when he wasn't around.
They asked where he was and and Laurie told him that Uncle Alex
had taken J as he wasn't behaving.
Unlike Kylie, J has never been seen again alive.
(38:40):
In November 2019 Kay Woodcock reached out to the police again
asking for a welfare cheque to be done on J and this is when
things really began to move. On the 26th of November police
arrived at Laurie's Rex for a home but when they arrived
Laurie wasn't there but Alex andChad were.
Cleverly while the officer stated it was a welfare cheque
(39:01):
on JJ, he never told Alex or Chad who had asked for the
welfare cheque. So Alex said well he isn't here,
he's staying with his grandmother at the moment.
Ding Ding Ding lie one. Turning to Chad, knowing exactly
who he was, the officer asked him who he was, and Chad replied
that he was a friend of Alex's Ding Ding Ding lie too, and that
(39:25):
he quote hardly knew Laurie. Ding Ding Ding lie.
Three absolute idiots. These people genuinely think
they're the smartest people in the room, don't they?
When the police managed to get in touch with Laurie, guess
what? Well, she also lied.
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding. Saying that JJ was in Arizona
with Melanie Gibb, but when theychecked with Gibb, she said this
(39:45):
wasn't true. She hadn't seen him in months.
By the time police and FBI went back to Laurie's home to search
it, she and Chad were long gone. Also gone were Alex Cox, and
they're apparently there was another property and it had been
empty too. Anyway, using Tammy's insurance
payout, which at the time was $430,000, which equated to about
(40:09):
529,000. In 2024, child and Laurie had
fled to Hawaii. So we're at the point now that
Tammy's died, Joe Ryan has died,Charles has been shot dead, and
the children are missing. I mean, what else could possibly
happen? Now remember I told you to
remember the name of Laurie's niece, the cult member Milani
Boudreaux? Remember I said she would become
(40:30):
important? Well, on October the 2nd of
2019, her estranged husband Brandon Boudreaux was shot at
while he was driving home from work in Gilbert, AZ.
In a very lucky turn of events, not only did the mullet bullet
miss his head by mere inches, but Brandon recognised the
(40:52):
vehicle. It was a Jeep, which he knew was
the one that Tylie Ryan used. It drove away, but Brandon got
straight on the phone to 911 andreported the incident to police,
providing the number plate or licence plate details.
Now you and I now know that Tylie probably wasn't driving it
as she hasn't been seen in months and when the registration
details came back it was registered to Charles Valo.
(41:15):
And while we know it couldn't have been him driving the truck
either like Charles had with Laurie in 2018, Brandon had
noticed similar weird changes inhis wife.
She was also stockpiling for theend of the world and was
spending more and more time withLaurie.
Then it late 2019 she quote blindsided Brandon.
Sorry, it might not have been late 2019 but in 2019 she quote
(41:40):
blind sighted Brandon by saying she wanted a divorce totally out
of the blue and he truly believed that this was because
of the cult she was in with Chadand Laurie.
Fast forward to December the 12th of the same year, so 2019,
Alex Cox died allegedly from high blood pressure and blood
clots, which makes it sound natural doesn't it?
(42:00):
But honestly I think otherwise because only the day before this
Laurie and Chad had told him that tommye body was being
exhumed and according to his wife Zulena Pastens, when she
did her testimony, Alex had toldher he was worried he was going
to become Chad and Laurie fall guy after his death.
It was felt that his secrets haddied with him.
(42:22):
But the FBI had his phone and they were able to use GPS pings
to track his movements. So they found out that the day
after the trip to Yellowstone Park.
So I think Yellowstone Park was on the 8th of September.
So after the day after on the 9th of September, data from
Alex's phone showed that he was in the backyard of Chad de
(42:44):
Bell's home for about 2 1/2 hours and using the same method.
The FBI, who also had possessionof Tammy De Bell's phone at this
point, discovered that 40 minutes after Alex left David's
property, Chad sent her a text that read quote.
Well, I have had an interesting morning.
I felt I should burn all the limb debris by the fire pit
(43:07):
before it got too soaked by the coming storms.
While I did so, I spotted a big raccoon along the fence.
I hurried and got my gun and he was still walking the wall.
I got close enough that one shotdid the trick.
He is now in our pet cemetery todo you note the word limb there.
He will later say that he was talking about tree limbs, but
(43:30):
perhaps this was a Freudian slipshowing us the true meaning.
We'll come back to that as well.I keep saying we'll come back to
that, but I'm going to tell you in a minute.
On December the 20th, 2019, the police announced that Tyler Ryan
and JJ Valo were officially being listed as missing children
and they asked the public for help in locating them.
They stated that they were sure the children were not with
(43:52):
Laurie or child. Then the following day on the
21st, they announced that both Laurie and Chad were considered
to be persons of interest. When Brandon Boudreau heard that
the kids were missing, he began to believe that not only was
that connected to Charles's death, but he also thought that
him being shocked at was linked to both crimes and he cleverly
(44:12):
deduced that it all linked to Laurie and the Church of the
first born. In February 2020, he made his
theory official by filing a document with the court.
In it he stated quote, the attempt on his life was
motivated by insurance money, that the gunman was probably
Laurie's deceased brother Alex Cox, and that Milani was likely
(44:33):
aware of Ty Lee and JJ's whereabouts.
End Quote. Milani would later deny this,
but what a man when he says about thinking it was the
attempt on his life was motivated by insurance money.
He believes that Laurie wanted to get the insurance money, so
being close to her niece, she would somehow get it or maybe
the niece would then disappear. The trial that was due to start
(44:54):
on Monday on this week is actually trial 3 and it's to get
justice for Brandon Boudreaux. And it's Laurie Dabell on the
dock. She's representing herself and
is facing the charge of conspiracy to murder Brandon.
I'm just going to add this, thiscourt case was due to start on
Monday, just gone on for the Friday before jury selection
(45:17):
should have finished. They were at the stage of
something they call Vidro. And basically what happens is
they're still trying to decide who's going to be on the jury.
And during this stage, both the defence and the prosecutors can
ask questions to find out if a jury member's suitable or not.
Because Laurie is representing herself, she has to be at this
(45:39):
part of the process so that she can ask the questions in her
capacity as her own attorney. However, this got cancelled on
Friday because of some sickness that Laurie had.
Fast forward to Monday and what should have happened was the
jury selection would hopefully have been ended by 3:00 PM and
then opening statements would occur for both sides of the
(46:02):
court case. However, Laurie rocked up in a
wheelchair stating that she was so sick she couldn't actually
move out of her wheelchair to a normal seat.
She couldn't ask questions. She didn't even think she could
just sit there and let the jury be asked questions that she
could hear. She wouldn't allow anything.
And the reason behind all this, it is believed allegedly the
(46:26):
judge in her case is Judge Bereski.
He is man has or had the patience of a St He was the
judge in her last trial during the trial and moves that are not
they're not disallowed. But if you're representing
yourself, you have to know the insurance and nights of
everything. However, Laurie does not and
from more than one occasion since the end of that trial, she
(46:48):
has made her mission by filing motions and well, filing motions
basically to have him, Judge Bereski, removed from her trial,
last trial. I'm sure he said at one point if
because she's got the speedy trial, we should be able to fit
it in in June. I will not be your judge.
This is what she clearly wanted. So it looks like she's
(47:08):
disrupting trial at the moment because she wants to not have
him as her judge. However, Judge Bereski said
yesterday that no matter what happens, I am your judge.
I can't. I don't know why she's picked to
fight with him. I don't know who in their right
mind would do this with the judge, but she hasn't been able
to successfully remove him. So now I'm pretty sure she's
(47:28):
malingering anyway. So yeah.
And the the jury still haven't been picked and it looks like
she's due to come back in on Wednesday.
But I think there'll be a lot ofthis to and fro him.
She's so ridiculous. If you listen to all the trial
coverage over at Hidden Tree Crime podcasts, which I'll link,
she's ridiculous. She's so manipulative.
(47:49):
Anyway, sorry I got a little biton my high horse there.
In 2020, Joe Ryan's case was reopened, but again, it was
determined to still be natural causes.
On February the 20th, 2020, Laurie was found in part you to
Nate Easton, who we're going to hear about soon, and somebody
else, but I can't remember who. The other person's name also
(48:09):
apologies but she was fined and arrested in Hawaii.
Then on to the fifth she was extradited back to Idaho.
When she returned to Madison County she was charged on 2
felony counts of desertion and non support of dependent
children as well as 3 misdemeanours with bail set at
$5,000,000 which was later reduced to 1,000,000.
And I forgot to say during the time that her children were
(48:31):
missing she collected their state benefits the entire time.
Just remember that Chad then returned to Idaho as well and he
tried to get money to get her bailed out and he asked his
neighbours, Todd and Alice Gilbert if they would put their
house up for it. And well, they were as disgusted
as the rest of us. They'd been lied to.
They'd asked what was going on. And one of the quotes that I
(48:54):
don't know if I can remember thefull quote, but one of the
things that they reported was that basically Chad had said how
much Ty Lee didn't like him. So it's been said that both Chad
and Laurie decided that Ty Lee was dark and so was JJ.
On June the 9th, 2020, the FBI, Rexboro Police, Freemont County
Sheriff's Office and police headed to Child's property with
(49:16):
a search warrant up above them. Journalist Nate Easton who I
just mentioned was in a news helicopter and he was filming
the process and talking on his channel as he went.
Now in the documentary this is shown so you can go watch this,
but Davis''s property was a verdin cars and the yard below was
taped off and full of officers. There was people and vehicles
(49:37):
everywhere and they were settingup a search area as to where
Alex's phone pinged. OK, so in that area there was a
canine, which I'm assuming was acadaver dog but I might be
wrong. And there are also you can see
in the documentary that there's some blue tent set up which Nate
describes as canopy tents. He says there's 4, but I could
only really see three, but thereprobably was 4 while the
(49:59):
searches were being done. Nate from the helicopter
realises that Chad's nowhere to be seen and it turns out at this
point, and we know this because of recorded prison phone calls,
Chad had phoned Laurie in prisonto warn her about the search.
Now in the documentary on that recording, we hear Laurie ask if
he's OK and he replies no, followed by a pause quote.
(50:20):
They're searching the property. Now I'm sure she starts with hey
babe. Now I don't know his usual
affect, but to me he signs flat and may be resigned to what's
about to happen. Laurie wants to know if they're
in the home and when he makes itclear that they are outside and
in the yard, she just says, quote, OK.
And I'm guessing that at this point, they knew the jig was up.
It was on the same day that human remains were found, which
(50:42):
were later confirmed to be thoseof Tyler Ryan and JJ Val.
I'm not going to go into their cause of death or the conditions
they were found not in this episode, but I might do another
one if you want me to at this time.
While this was going on, Chad tried to make a break for it in
his car, but he was quickly stopped and arrested for
obstruction or concealment of evidence and his bail was set at
(51:06):
$1 million. On May the 25th, 2021, Chad and
Laurie were indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit first
degree murder for the deaths of Ty Lee, JJ and Tammy as well as
Grand Theft by deception regarding the children.
Laurie was also charged with Grand Theft related to her
children's social services, Social Security survivor
(51:29):
benefits, and Chad facing insurance fraud charge related
to Tammy's life insurance policy.
Now, just to let you know, I'm taking all these details here
straight from Wikipedia, which Iknow used to be seen as a
terrible source of information, but actually it's very well
referenced and it's just easier for me to read them out to make
sure that I get it correct. In June 2021, Laurie was
(51:51):
indicted by a grand jury in Maricopa County, Arizona on one
kind of conspiracy to commit first degree murder for the
death of Charles Valo, and within the police documents it
reads this quote. The evidence shows that
Charles's death was a planned event and necessary to prevent
Charles and others from confronting Laurie about her
(52:11):
extreme religious beliefs when he came to town.
The death of Charles Valo was also necessary in order for Chad
Dabel and Laurie Valo to marry and fulfil the religious
prophecy. Yep, and to get his insurance
money. In 2022, Laurie was indicted
again by a grand jury on one count of first degree
(52:31):
premeditated murder related to claims that she conspired with
her brother to kill Brandon Boudreau.
Prosecutors believe that Laurie hoped to access Boudreau's money
through her niece. So Alex has died.
So she's up on that one on her own.
And this is the court case that is meant to be going on right
now. Now, though, Tammy's body.
So if you recall, I've just saidthat both of them were up on
(52:53):
charges of conspiracy to commit first degree murder.
And within the deaths of Ty Lee and JJ, Tammy was included then.
And that's because while Tammy'sbody was exhumed and autopsied
in February 2021, the results were not revealed until Laurie's
April 2023 trial. In this trial, it was revealed
that while Brenda Dye did not perform the autopsy herself, she
(53:16):
was present for it. And she said that when she saw
the findings, she had a change of heart about the method of
death. And remember, she said, natural
causes originally. The findings that caused this
change of heart included a deep breeze on Tammy's arm and her
lungs were found to be full of pink foam.
Now, that pink foam should not still have been in her lungs
(53:36):
this long after death. Chad's story of Tammy vomiting
the night before was also part of his undoing because she had
stomach contents that shouldn't have been there if she had
vomited. So based on all of this, Dye
changed the cause of death from natural causes to homicide,
specifying that the manner of death was asphyxiation by
suffocation. Now OK, initially Brenda died
(53:58):
did not do her job correctly, but but but in the trial she is
a little bit of a sassy badass. So during cross examination of
die by defence attorney John Pryor, she was asked if she was
going on a quote fishing expedition and looking for a
reason to change the death certificate and label the death
as a homicide. And she replied that she quote
(54:19):
changed the cause of death both because of the results of the
autopsy and because of the presence of two dead children on
Chad Dabell's property. Mic drop.
Now initially I will say as wellthat Chad and Laurie were going
to stand together for the trials.
However, Laurie wanted speedy, wanted a speedy trial and Chad
(54:41):
did not. But also not just that, Chad
wanted to be able to blame Laurie for everything.
So on May the 12th, 2023, Lauriewas found guilty of all criminal
charges. On July the 31st, 2023, she
received 3 consecutive life sentences without the
possibility of parole for respectively, the murder of Ty
(55:01):
Lee, the murder of JJ, and the conspiracy to commit murder
charge of Tammy in addition to fines and restitution for the
Grand Theft charges. Now what I don't understand here
is she's just had that trial. The next one was the trial for
Charles Vallow and now we are she's malingering and pussyfoot
in a bite for trial 3. Why is she doing this?
(55:22):
Why? You're in there for life love,
you're not getting out. So why are you so concerned
about being found guilty of two further crimes?
I don't get it. Anyway, Judge Boyce said that
Laurie had murdered her childrento quote remove them as
obstacles and to profit financially by choosing both the
most evil and destructive path possible and going down a quote
(55:43):
bizarre religious rabbit hole tojustify their killings.
Yep, completely agree. Again, I am quoting these
charges directly from Wikipedia. On May the 30th 2024 the jury
found Chad De Bell guilty of first degree murder and
conspiracy in the deaths of Tammy Ty Lee and he was also
found guilty of Grand Theft by deception related to the
(56:04):
children's killing and of insurance fraud related to
Tammys. The other thing about Chad is
that he had death sentence on the table while Laurie had had
that removed. So he was he could only get
death sentence which is coming. So at a sentence hearing, Chad
chose not to present any mitigating evidence and on the
1st of June 2024, he was sentenced to death.
(56:26):
In April of this year, Laurie was found guilty of conspiring
to murder Charles Valo, meaning she's facing another life
sentence. But honestly, as I said, what's
another one to her at this point?
Her sentence will not be announced until the Brandon
Boudreaux trial is complete. And his trial is the reason that
I've done this bit of an update today so that you guys have the
(56:47):
basic information and can listento Brandon Boudreaux's trial and
understand why it's so importantlegally and to him and to his
family and to everybody involvedgetting all of their justice,
OK? He deserves justice for this.
He only survived this. This is only not a murder charge
because he survived it. So I will be keeping up with the
(57:09):
third trial. I will be updating you as well.
But for now, this is the end of the very first bonus edition.
And and as I say, we had recorded it.
We had some great content, but the little gremlins got into our
systems. So enjoy this and next time I
will definitely be back with Victoria.
Any questions, fire them up on our socials, our Spotify's,
(57:31):
please follow, share, download. Like all of these things really
help us to grow the podcast. OK, take care for now.
Oh, I better say Victoria's thing.
Keep on trucking. Bye.
