has been terrorizing the downtown area. You've got a description
of the thief and the method of operation for him.
Your job find him.

or just trying it out the way it looks, we'll
leave it in.
Speaker 6 (02:07):
I ought to save a lot of steps. Called a
phone a deck huh yeah. Works good, a lot better
than trying to juggle a phone on your shoulder and
write at the same time. And the desk man doesn't
have to repeat what's said to everybody in the room.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Method of operation.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Instead of waiting for darkness, he was now hitting in
the daylight hours. During the time we'd spent on the case,
the stats office had made several runs trying to give
us some kind of a lead. Everything about the suspect
had been checked and rechecked. Special show ups were arranged,
and possible suspects were shown to the victims. In spite
of all our efforts, the suspect.

You know, we've been getting calls for the last ten days, letters,
the editors, everything you.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Know you can get in the line. Dick has been
coming at us from all sides.
Speaker 5 (07:49):
What do you got on?
Speaker 6 (07:51):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (07:51):
We got to put out a mimigraft answer to that? Hm,
you know we can take a lot of paper.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Is there anything I can have? That's no secret. Most
of the victims have told us the same story. God
comes up to one's, starts a conversation about a.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Ride on, plays a cup of coffee, anything, sold a
victim down from there.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
First chance he gets, he slams the victim into the wall,
ask for the money.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
Before them are fat.
Speaker 11 (08:09):
And wh when he worked at night, didn't he Yeah?
What about his choice of victims? If possible tie in there.

American around thirty, dark hair, dark eyes, one hundred and
sixty five pounds, five eighty five pounds.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
But it's a couple of thousand people.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Yeah. Now, what about the area he's working? Is there
anything there?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Well, seem to make most of his pickups down around
the plaza.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
And what about the victims himself?
Speaker 4 (08:35):
What do you mean?
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Well, he usually looked like the carrying money.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Or no, not all the time.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Last week he beat up a service man in Savidian clothes.
He took forty four dollars from him. Kid didn't look
like he had a diame in his pockets.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Yeah, nothing about this guy.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
If that's a pattern day, there's only one thing that
can drop in a pocket. He's mean, the way he works,
the kick he gets out of beating up a person,
it's gotta be more than just money to him.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Yeah. Well, one more thing. How close are you.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Outside the country mile?
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Half the division's been on his tail. It keeps up.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Metro's gonna ask for an increasing budget to hire more men.
We've got the area covered like rain and he don't
get wet.
Speaker 11 (09:05):
Well, I got to get back to the office, write something.
Try to take it easy, honestly, Look, we're on your
side now.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Thanks for the help.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Okay, see Rona right, So.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
I'm frank cool. Huh yeah, anything comes up, let me know.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
Huh we got something you'll hear about it.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Should you like to get a break on the story?
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Well, we're both even there, huh so would we?
Speaker 9 (09:21):
He?
Speaker 3 (09:30):
So the next week, the patrol of the streets continued.
The strong arm batted Hit three more times. Each time
the victim and the witnesses gave us the same description.
It matched the suspect we were looking for. Thursday May thirteenth,
seven fifty two pm, we got back to the squadron.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Anything come in, Yeah, tick back on, Whitey.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
How's it look? No good?
Speaker 4 (09:49):
What do you mean?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Well, according to Bretton, he's been in jail for the
last two months. Yeah, he's waiting for trial.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
And stocked him. What does it say what he fell for?
Armed robbery graduated? Uh, looks like it. I got it
robbery Friday. Hello, yeah, well could you speak up? I
can't hear. Yeah, that's better. How's that?
Speaker 5 (10:16):

Speaker 4 (10:18):
Yeah, we'll not give me your name.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
We can't do much with that. What do you got?
Fellas is a name of a strong arm Bandits Benny Jessop.
What about the person who called hung up anonymously? Yeah?
What do you think? That was one way to find out? Yeah,
ask Benny Jessop.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
After we checked the name through R and I, Frank
and I went out to Benny Jessup's address.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Wow, where Benny Jessip?
Speaker 5 (11:02):
Hell? What do you want?
Speaker 4 (11:03):
You've been in? Jessep?
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Yeah, police officers want to talk to you.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
You're looking for something special.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
A couple of questions we want to ask you.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
Sure, I got no beef.
Speaker 10 (11:11):
The cops appreciate it if you keep it short. I
got big trouble, but this Selson might help.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Ah.
Speaker 7 (11:18):
It's got a hold of some bad food, real ink.
Speaker 10 (11:22):
Excuse Yeah, what's it all about?
Speaker 5 (11:26):
You?
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Ever been arrested? Jessep?
Speaker 5 (11:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (11:29):
Look, it'd be a lot easier and faster if I
started off telling you I've been the route. Uh, if
you guys check the record before you came up here.
You know I fell once for burgery. You know I'm
free now. I don't know nobody nothing. Let's go from there.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
All right.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
You got a job. Yeah, what do you do?
Speaker 10 (11:40):

Speaker 5 (11:41):
What's that?
Speaker 10 (11:42):
I sell candy? Where one of the theaters downtown?
Speaker 4 (11:45):
When do you work nights? Name them?
Speaker 5 (11:48):

Speaker 4 (11:50):
What hours?
Speaker 5 (11:51):
Check in at four? Work till eleven, eleven thirty?
Speaker 4 (11:53):
How come you're not there tonight? I told you I'm sick.
How long you had the job? A couple of years?
Anybody to back that up?
Speaker 5 (12:01):
What you mean?
Speaker 4 (12:01):
Well, anybody will say you're there.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Look, you better tell me what this is about. Huh.

Speaker 5 (12:08):
You guys are in the You know that comes.
Speaker 4 (12:09):

Speaker 4 (12:14):
Now how do you sell this candy? Where are you
in the theater? When you work all over?
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Storeroom, lobby, all over?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
You got a regular stand? Do you work in the aisles?
Speaker 5 (12:22):
Stand in the lobby?
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Somebody there to take the tickets?
Speaker 10 (12:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Well I ought to be able to tell us then,
shouldn't they tell you nothing.
Speaker 12 (12:27):
I've been working since I got out of the joint.
You go down there and start asking a lot of questions.
You're going to cause a lot of trouble.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
Is that right? Probably get me fired, don't worry about it.
Speaker 10 (12:35):
Yeah, easy to say you haven't got the job.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
They're calling?
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Check.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
Yeah you got a phone?
Speaker 5 (12:40):
You see one around?
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Give me the number. I don't know what you work there,
but you don't know the phone number I forgot. Where
is the place?
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Corner third and Weller?
Speaker 4 (12:49):
What's the manager's name?
Speaker 5 (12:50):
You got to talk to him.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
Look, I can do it on the phone, or we
can go on down there. How do you want it?
Speaker 10 (12:55):
Names woodroom.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
I'll tack a job. Well, if you tell me what
this is about, if it fits, you'll know who.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
Turned you on me?
Speaker 4 (13:02):
What?
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Look?
Speaker 10 (13:03):
Who tried to box job? You've got reason to come
up here. I don't know what you're digging for, but
I'm not around. Somebody gave you my name, didn't they.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
We've heard it. If we told you the truth, you
wouldn't believe it.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Somebody, I know it's hard to say.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
You just need two words.
Speaker 10 (13:16):
What's that first and last name?
Speaker 4 (13:18):
We got a call we don't know who it was from.
Person said we were looking for you, and you battle
up here in rousting you've got no rousing. We had
to check it out.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
What is it?
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Burgery?
Speaker 10 (13:26):
No, well, I'm home free. Only thing I ever fell
for I learned.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
How about it? You talk to woodroom? Yeah?
Speaker 10 (13:33):
What about my job?
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Is alliby hole. He's been there every work night for
the last four months. And I told you, all right,
you're out. But somebody's on your back.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
Nothing new.
Speaker 10 (13:41):
I've been carrying a lot of people.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
All right, Jessep. We'll leave it right there. Keep your
nose clean.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Thanks a lot.
Speaker 10 (13:46):
Uh, I'm not sure I want you on my team.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Huh.
Speaker 10 (13:49):
Look what about my job? What a woodroom say?
Speaker 4 (13:51):
You've got no trouble?
Speaker 5 (13:52):
What do you mean?
Speaker 4 (13:53):
He says, take care of yourself. Yeah, good work tomorrow night.
We'll see you around, Jessep.
Speaker 6 (14:01):
I didn't tell him everything what I talked to the
manager on the phony film man.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
You know, you know the guy who called you. Yeah,
what about him?
Speaker 3 (14:08):
He's an usher down there. Yeah, he wants the big
candy butchers. Frank and I left Jessip and went downtown
to talk to the theater manager in person. He verified
the fact that Jesssep had Bennett worked during the hours
of the robberies. Other people who worked in the theater
were questioned their statements ruled out.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Jessip is our suspect.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Another day went by, there were several strong arm robberies
in the downtown area, but none with the same viciousness
used by our suspect. Saturday, May fifteenth, Frank and I
got back to.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
The office, hid Joe. Frank Jim Hi when he got there,
talked skippers.
Speaker 7 (14:46):
Afternoon, had a meeting with Chief Brown. Yeah, they drew
the line. Said we got to come up with something.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
We got half a minute metro working on it. Now,
all the streets are covered. There's not much more we
can do.
Speaker 6 (14:54):
Hey, guy's got to make a mistake. All we need
is a little time skipper.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Just cut off the supply.
Speaker 8 (15:00):
It is.
Speaker 7 (15:00):
Yeah, I've been going over and take a look at
this man. Most of the strong arms have been taking
place in this area. We've had cars here here, along
here and covering the alleys in here. But suppose we
put our own men in that area on foot decoy system?
Speaker 5 (15:18):
Yeah, the only thing we haven't tried.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
It might work.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
Something to do.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
How do we set it up?
Speaker 7 (15:22):
Guy makes most of us pickups around the plaza, right,
and we start from there.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Each night, one of us walked around.
Speaker 7 (15:28):
The streets try to pick the guy up, other two
following a car.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
So what's the captain think of the idea? I haven't
talked to him yet. He can't be if it's a possibility.
And when do we start?
Speaker 5 (15:36):
How about the night?
Speaker 4 (15:37):
Well, let's go Wait a minute, who's going to do
the walking?
Speaker 5 (15:40):
Doesn't make a lot of difference.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
How about flipping a client? All right?
Speaker 6 (15:44):
I man, fine, that's one you didn't get, Joe, I win,
I hope.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
So for the next two days the plan was carried out.
The thief didn't hit. He began to wonder if he
quit his operation. Monday, May seventeenth, while Frank and Jim
Austin followed me in Unit one K eighty, I acted
as decoy twelve forty seven am. It looked like another
(16:14):
wasted night.
Speaker 5 (16:24):
You got a match?
Speaker 4 (16:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (16:28):
I want a cigarette?
Speaker 8 (16:29):
Sir? All right?
Speaker 5 (16:32):
I know about a light?
Speaker 6 (16:34):
Yeah, go on, I'm forgive me your walk, Try and
take it, alright, fellow, where you going? Let me go?
Speaker 5 (16:48):
Okay, cool, get up there.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Get your hands against the wall. Come on, move all right, now,
get your hands in back of the.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
Hi mine. Don't shout copy a.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
Do as you're told.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
We'll tell you a lot of trouble.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Jim. Yeah, here you go, all right, you hands down,
run around.
Speaker 9 (17:14):
Good?
Speaker 5 (17:15):

Speaker 3 (22:07):
We ran David Santel's name and description through R and I,
and we found that he'd served the term at the
County jail for violation of the State in Narcotics Act.
There was no record on either Giles Shaffer or Sidney Tremler.
Reminer was taken to the main jail and Frank and I,
along with Jim Austin and Giles Shaffer, drove out to
Santel's apartment. It was a large place in the Hollywood area.
While Jim Austin stayed with a suspect, Frank and I
(22:27):
checked with the manager. He told us that Santal had
left a few minutes before we got to the place.
The four of us went inside. Well I know you
went over in, saidam you guys? Sure throw a muscle
or eye.
Speaker 4 (22:38):

you big enough to walk through.

be lucky to get home on weekend?

You put it on the wire and get it around
to the rest of the two bit bums that work
the same filthy operation.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
You tell them every time they put the.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Arm in an old man, every time they slug a
service man, they're never gonna know it might be a cop.
And if it's not, there'll be four of us waiting
in the next doorway. So before you roll that next victim,
you think about that, will you?
Speaker 4 (23:57):
You got it all off your chest. Now, No, I
got one more thing for you.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
You're going to jail and we're going to drop every
book we got on you. There's a mirror in the
car and away and you look at it and smile.

were changed to protect the innocent.
