The honeycomb Chronicles.
S2 (00:55):
Here we are. It's another crisp Saturday morning with just
enough clouds covering the warm September sun that I don't
know if that's sunblock my mom made me put on
was totally needed. But anyway, sunblock or not, we're glad
you're here for another day of soccer. We have the
Hornets versus the Pirates, and after the Hornets surprising loss
last week, it looks like they have come ready to
(01:15):
prove themselves this week.
S3 (01:17):
Hey, Colin.
S4 (01:18):
Oh, hi, Mr. Mitchell.
S3 (01:20):
I didn't know you'd be here.
S4 (01:21):
Yeah, Max said he had another game and I didn't
have anything going on, so I figured I'd come.
S3 (01:27):
Cool. Well, I'm glad to see you. Did I miss anything? No.
S4 (01:32):
Arlo was just doing his usual pre-game talking.
S3 (01:35):
Arlo is really talented and really good at sports announcing.
Is he in your class? No, but.
S4 (01:41):
He does go to my school.
S3 (01:43):
Oh, look, there's Max. Go, Max, let's get a W today.
S4 (01:47):
He looks really focused.
S3 (01:49):
He sure does. I'm glad that he's still playing.
S4 (01:52):
I don't think he really wants to be playing.
S3 (01:54):
Yeah, that's what he said. But I'm glad his parents
made him stick it out.
S4 (01:58):
But he didn't seem very happy about it.
S3 (02:00):
Well, a lot of times we have to do things
that don't make us happy. Plus, if I know Max,
he wouldn't be happy for very long if he sat
out a whole sports season. I think he would have
been more upset if he actually quit.
S4 (02:11):
Not happy if he plays. Not happy if he doesn't.
Sounds a lot like the teacher from Ecclesiastes.
S3 (02:17):
It sure does. Hey, what do you think about Ecclesiastes?
S4 (02:21):
Oh, it is a bit confusing and it does seem
to go back and forth a lot, but honestly, I
kind of get it. Oh, really? Yeah. I mean, life
really does seem to be all over the place sometimes.
S3 (02:35):
Life can be hard. If you ever want to talk
about it.
S2 (02:38):
Looks like it's time for the traditional coin toss. The
Hornets captain Max, and the Pirates captain Trina are headed
to the center of the field. Trina calls heads, and
it's the Pirates ball to start. It is game time, folks.
S3 (02:51):
Let's start strong. Hornets go!
UU (02:53):
Max! And the Hornets score the first point of the game.
And Hudson passes it to Max.
S2 (03:03):
Max is dribbling down the field and goes for a goal.
No way. No, it's a trick pass to Gracie and
she scores! What an amazing play by the Hornets. And
the Hornets steal the ball from the Pirates. Once again, man.
UU (03:15):
Someone called the fire department because the Hornets are on fire.
And another goal. Okay, we're in the last 15 seconds.
There is no way that the Pirates can come back.
But the Hornets do not seem to be backing down.
Max has the ball and is once again.
S2 (03:32):
Dribbling down the field. Tanner is open and Max pass. No, no, wait.
He takes it all the way. He kicks and he
scores once again. And that's the game. Making the final
score for two zero. Hornets win.
S3 (03:44):
Woo! Way to go Hornets.
S2 (03:48):
A huge win for the Hornets. And we'll see you
here next week once again. Arlo signing off.
S4 (03:55):
Hey Mr. Mitchell tell Max good job for me.
S3 (03:58):
Don't you want to tell him yourself?
S4 (03:59):
I gotta run, I want to try to wash the
dishes before my mom gets home.
S3 (04:03):
Oh, okay. See you on Monday.
S5 (04:12):
Hi, sweetie. Where were you?
S4 (04:14):
Mom, what are you doing here?
S5 (04:15):
Well, hello to you too. I got sent home early
from my shift today.
S4 (04:20):
Again? That's the third time this week.
S5 (04:23):
Well, someone seems to be counting.
S4 (04:25):
Oh, well, I just noticed. I guess that's all, sweetie.
S5 (04:30):
It is nothing for you to worry about. Okay, now,
how about you answer my question? Where were you?
S4 (04:36):
Oh, I was at the soccer fields watching my friend Max. Fun.
S5 (04:41):
You've been hanging out with Max a lot lately?
S4 (04:43):
Yeah. He's cool.
S5 (04:45):
Did they win? Yep.
S4 (04:47):
4 to 0.
S5 (04:48):
Glad to hear it.
S4 (04:49):
Hey. Sorry I didn't get the dishes done. I thought
I was going to have time after the game before
you got home.
S5 (04:56):
Well, how about I wash and you dry, and then
we can make some lunch together? Okay.
S4 (05:02):
What do we have for lunch?
S5 (05:04):
Mm. That's a good question.
S4 (05:06):
I think all we have left in the pantry is
some crackers and some cans of beans.
S5 (05:10):
Well, I believe we have some peanut butter and jelly.
S4 (05:13):
Yeah, but no bread. Mm.
S5 (05:17):
How about I make some mini peanut butter and jelly
cracker sandwiches?
S4 (05:23):
I've never had those before, but that sounds fun.
S5 (05:27):
Mini cracker sandwiches? It is. But let's get these dishes
done and out of the way first. Here, I'll put
on some music. It's always more fun to do chores
with music.
S4 (05:36):
As long as it's not anything too old.
S5 (05:38):
Hey, now, my music isn't old.
S6 (05:48):
Colin, are you doing okay today? You seem really quiet. Huh?
I am. Yeah. I mean, you're always kind of quiet today.
You just seem quieter than normal. Maybe a bit sad, too. Oh.
S4 (06:02):
Um, I don't really want to talk about it right now.
S6 (06:04):
You can share with me, Colin. I'm a good secret keeper.
S4 (06:07):
I don't think one.
S6 (06:08):
Time I was with my mom when she bought my
little sister Lula a birthday gift an entire month before
her actual birthday, and I never told her. So you
can definitely trust me.
S4 (06:17):
I just don't really want to talk about it right now.
S6 (06:21):
Are you sure? Yeah, I'm sure that's fine. As long
as you're absolutely sure.
S4 (06:28):
I'm absolutely sure. Lena.
S6 (06:30):
Okay, so I wanted to tell you about this idea
I had for the podcast. Okay. It will take a
lot of sound effects, but I think it'll be really
cool for the listeners. And maybe a fun project for you, too.
S4 (06:42):
What is it?
S6 (06:43):
Well, you know, how we've been seeing the teacher in
Ecclesiastes seems to go up and down and all around
a bunch. Huh? Well, I was thinking it would be
really fun if we had, like, a roller coaster. Hey guys. Hey, guys.
S4 (06:55):
Hey, guys.
S7 (06:56):
Yeah. Hey, guys. Please don't tell me you've never heard
that phrase before.
S6 (07:01):
No, we've heard it. That's what's so weird.
S4 (07:04):
Dude, are you okay?
S6 (07:06):
Yeah. That's the most normal thing you've said to us ever.
S7 (07:11):
I guess I'm just not totally feeling myself today.
S4 (07:14):
Man, I thought you'd be running in here more excited
than ever.
S7 (07:17):
Why is that?
S4 (07:18):
Well, you had an epic win on Saturday. Your team dominated,
and I just thought you'd be totally pumped about it.
S7 (07:26):
We did have a great game.
S6 (07:28):
Then why are you so sad?
S7 (07:30):
I don't know, I just thought it'd feel different.
S4 (07:33):
What do you mean?
S7 (07:34):
Well, at first I was happy.
S8 (07:38):
Hornets. Hornets. Hornets. Okay, okay. Quiet down for just a minute. Team.
You guys did a really great job. Each of you
played really well and gave it everything you had. So
today your ice cream is on me. All right, Triple scoop.
But before you go get your single scoops, I want
(07:59):
to say in front of everyone that today's MVP goes
to our team's captain, Max. He really was determined to
help our team do our best, even after our disappointing
loss last week. Max, go to the front of the
line and get your ice cream first. Bud. Max. Max!
UU (08:15):
Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max. Max!
S4 (08:23):
Whoa! Slow claps and free ice cream.
S7 (08:27):
Yeah, it was pretty cool in the moment, I'd say.
But then it all changed later when I got home.
S9 (08:38):
Max. Dinner is ready. Max, you better not be hitting
my walls with that soccer ball of yours. Hurry up
and wash your hands. Dinner is being placed on the table.
S10 (08:49):
Mm. It smells delicious, sweetheart.
S9 (08:51):
Well thank you honey. It will be delicious if it's
eaten while it's hot. What's taking that son of yours
so long?
S10 (08:57):
Max, you better get moving. The food is hot.
S9 (09:02):
Young man, what is the matter with you? Do you
have bowling balls in your shoes?
S10 (09:09):
Max, you better answer your mother.
S7 (09:11):
I just want to be done with soccer.
S9 (09:13):
Oh, no, ma'am, we've already had this conversation. You have
to be a man of your word. You will finish
this season.
S10 (09:20):
Your mother's right any way you want. Today. I thought
that would give you the boost you needed to want
to keep playing.
S7 (09:25):
I did have a boost, but then coach said all
this nice stuff about me, and I just felt so
much pressure and the win didn't seem all that great
because I feel like I have to keep working so
hard just to keep winning. I hated losing last week,
but I don't know how much better winning feels right now.
S10 (09:42):
Son. Soccer is supposed to be fun. Winning or losing?
It's a sport and designed to be enjoyed. Of course
we want you to work hard, but the outcome we
care about most is.
S7 (09:56):
That my parents told me some other things, but I
didn't really listen. I was too bummed.
S4 (10:01):
I'm sorry Max.
S7 (10:02):
And to top it all off, my mom made asparagus.
I can't stand asparagus.
S3 (10:07):
Knock, knock. How's the honey cast crew doing at the
beginning of another great week? That good? Huh?
S6 (10:15):
Hi, Mr. Mitchell. Let me tell you, the boys aren't
doing so well. They're both sad.
S3 (10:20):
Oh, really?
S7 (10:21):
You're sad too, Colin?
S6 (10:22):
Sorta. Yeah. Max is bummed about soccer, and Colin won't
really share with me what's wrong, but he's quieter than normal.
S3 (10:29):
Thanks for the update, Lena. Why don't we let the
boys share what they'd like to write? Okay. Max, you're
upset about soccer. But I was at your game on Saturday,
and your team did great.
S7 (10:40):
Yeah, we did, but after an hour or so, the
wind just didn't seem that great. Like it really didn't
matter anymore.
S3 (10:48):
I understand that you do? Sure I do. A lot
of times we work really hard for something, thinking that
it will make us feel complete. And then when we
get that thing, it doesn't really do what we had
hoped it would.
S7 (11:01):
Yes, that's exactly how I feel.
S3 (11:04):
One might say it all feels meaningless.
S7 (11:07):
Yes, yes. Wait a minute. You didn't plan for me
to lose last week's game and then win this week,
did you?
S3 (11:16):
Of course not. I don't even know how I would
plan something like that.
S7 (11:20):
Well, I wouldn't put it past you.
S6 (11:22):
Neither would I.
S7 (11:23):
If you didn't plan it. How did you tie this
into Ecclesiastes? Like, how did you know that's where this
would end up?
S3 (11:30):
Well, I didn't know, but God's word is true. It
was true when it was written. And it's still true today.
So it still applies to our lives.
S6 (11:38):
I find that so interesting.
S3 (11:39):
It really is amazing.
S7 (11:41):
So what you're saying is soccer is meaningless. I knew it.
So then why are my parents still making me play?
S3 (11:48):
Whoa, whoa whoa. I didn't say that soccer was meaningless.
I said it may feel meaningless.
S7 (11:56):
I'm not seeing a difference.
S3 (11:57):
Remember, our word meaningless comes from the Hebrew word Havel.
S6 (12:01):
Which means vapor, not smoke.
S3 (12:04):
Correct. Something that we can't fully understand or grab hold of.
You've been chasing after a win, Max. You've been working
hard for a perfect season. But when that didn't happen,
you were bummed.
S7 (12:18):
Totally bummed.
S3 (12:19):
And then, even when you got a win, you weren't
completely satisfied. Nope.
S7 (12:25):
It just felt like there was more work ahead of me.
S3 (12:27):
And that's what the teacher from Ecclesiastes is telling us.
The good and the bad times are like vapor. It's
like chasing after the wind. It's impossible to catch.
S7 (12:38):
So then what are we supposed to do?
S3 (12:39):
Here, let me share one of my favorite verses from
Ecclesiastes with you. Lena, can I borrow your Bible?
S6 (12:45):
Absolutely. Here you go.
S3 (12:47):
In Ecclesiastes three, the teacher goes through a long list.
He shares that there is a time for everything to cry,
to laugh, to tear things down, and to build them up,
to keep things, to throw them away. It's a pretty
long list. But then he says this in verse 11,
he has made everything beautiful in its time. And here's
(13:08):
the part that I love. He has also set eternity
in the human heart. Yet no one can fathom what
God has done from beginning to end.
S7 (13:19):
So what does this mean?
S3 (13:21):
Well, we are going to experience a lot of things
in our lives, good and bad, or should I say
wins and losses. And there are times for both. We
won't always win and we won't always lose. But I
like to always win. I think that's true for all
of us, but it's just not reality. And though there
(13:41):
is beauty we can find in each season, we won't
be fully satisfied with anything on earth, we won't. We can't.
S11 (13:49):
Why not?
S3 (13:50):
It says right here. God set eternity in our hearts.
God made us for more than what we experience on
this earth.
S6 (13:57):
Mm. I see.
S3 (13:59):
All the things we enjoy here and now point us
to the goodness of God. And in the hard parts,
we can trust God's heart and have hope for one day,
everything being made completely good.
S4 (14:11):
But what if I don't trust him? What if bad
things just keep coming up and it always seems like
there's more bad around the corner?
S3 (14:18):
It's really hard. Colin. Yeah. Yeah. It is. And I
imagine when someone doesn't trust God, it feels heavy. Trying
to take on the good and the bad of life
without looking to the one who knows all things that
would make me feel really overwhelmed and worried about the future.
(14:38):
Is that maybe how you feel sometimes?
S6 (14:41):
Maybe. Why do you feel that way, Colin? What are
you worried about?
S3 (14:44):
Lena. Colin may not want to share. But, Colin, if
you do, we're here to listen. No, thanks.
S4 (14:53):
Life is just hard sometimes. And you all talk a
lot about God, but I just don't really know what
I think about him.
S3 (15:00):
Thanks for being honest, Colin and I agree. Life is
really hard sometimes. I'm praying for you.
S7 (15:06):
Yeah. Me too. So am I. Oh.
S3 (15:10):
Thanks. Here's the truth about God that I hope you
do understand. He is much bigger than you, Colin. So
you don't have to worry about the future. You can
give it to him.
S6 (15:22):
Oh, that reminds me of something. Can I have my
Bible back, please?
S3 (15:26):
Yeah. Here you go.
S6 (15:27):
I just highlighted a verse yesterday when I was reading
more of Ecclesiastes. It stuck out to me. Give me
one moment. Okay, here it is, 714. When times are good,
be happy. When times are bad, consider this. God made
this one as well as the other. Therefore, no one
can discover anything about their future.
S7 (15:50):
Lena, that doesn't seem like a very helpful verse right now.
S6 (15:53):
Well, I think it is.
S7 (15:54):
No one can discover anything about their future.
S6 (15:57):
Sure, that can be frustrating, but God does know the future.
S3 (16:01):
Right on Lena, there is a comfort in knowing that
even when we're uncertain, God's not. But that is hard
to believe sometimes.
S7 (16:10):
Even for me. And I've known about God my whole life. Really?
S4 (16:14):
It's hard for you.
S3 (16:15):
Yeah, I think it's hard for all of us sometimes.
But I'm thankful for God's truth and others around me
who help me in those times.
S6 (16:23):
Colin, I hope you know that you don't have to
go through good or bad times without God or without us.
S7 (16:30):
She's right. Colin. We're here for you.
S4 (16:33):
Thanks, guys.
S3 (16:35):
And just know the offer stands. If you ever want
to talk or if you ever have more questions about God. Hey,
it looks like they need me at the front office.
Are you guys all feeling okay now? Max?
S7 (16:47):
Uh, I. I'm just thinking through things. How I can
enjoy the wins and losses by remembering. Truth about God.
It might take a little while.
S3 (16:55):
It might? And you. Colin. I'm just.
S4 (17:00):
Yeah. Just thinking through things, too.
S3 (17:03):
Thinking through things is a good thing. Listen, I'm here
for another hour or so, so reach out if you
need me again.
S6 (17:09):
Thanks, Mr. Mitchell.
S7 (17:10):
Sayonara. Mitch. Mitch.
S4 (17:12):
Bye, Mr. Mitchell. Okay. Lena. You were telling me about
that thing you wanted to do for the podcast. Oh, right.
S6 (17:22):
Are you sure you don't want to talk about anything
else right now?
S4 (17:25):
Yes, Lena. I'm sure.
S6 (17:28):
Just checking. Okay, so here's what I was thinking. Max,
you and I open up as usual. And then here's
where all your techie stuff would go in. Colin. Honeycomb Chronicles.
