Merry Christmas. Thank you so much for having me. I

UU (01:25):
We're so glad to have you here. Now, I don't
know about all of you listening, but in this room.
S2 (01:30):
We're excited about Christmas.
S1 (01:32):
We most certainly are. All the waiting is about to
end because tomorrow is the day. There's been so much waiting.
And now it's so close. For weeks I've been counting down.
And it's hard to believe that. Just one more sleep
until it's actually Christmas.
S2 (01:47):
I feel butterflies in my stomach. I'm so excited.
S1 (01:50):
I'm just envisioning tomorrow morning and, well, I can hardly
keep myself from moving.
S2 (01:55):
I know your legs haven't stopped bouncing since we sat down.
S3 (01:59):
You know what we call that?
S2 (02:01):
Hyper.
S3 (02:03):
Well, maybe partly, but I would say it's anticipation. You know,
looking forward to something that you know is going to
happen in this situation with great excitement.
S1 (02:14):
You hit the nail on the head.
S2 (02:15):
Yes.
S3 (02:16):
It's a feeling that has been a part of every Christmas,
especially the first one, really.
S2 (02:22):
Were they waiting for gifts back then too?
S3 (02:25):
They were waiting for the greatest gift.
S1 (02:28):
What do you mean, old Saint Mitch?
S3 (02:30):
Well, from the time that the very first sin entered
God's perfect world, he made a promise. A promise to
send someone who would make things right. Defeat Satan and
provide a way for God's creation to be with him
the way that he designed it to be. This person
(02:50):
was going to be mighty and strong, like no one
else had ever been. A king of all kings. The
special name for this promised king was the Messiah. The
promise of the Messiah was given to Adam and Eve,
and the hope of this king was passed on to
God's people throughout all of history, from Abraham to Joseph.
(03:11):
To Moses to David. Through all the kings and all
the prophets. For hundreds and hundreds of years, people anticipated
the promised King, looking forward to a day when things
would be made right between God and the people he made.
The Messiah was the best gift that anyone could have
hoped for. And in the small town of Bethlehem one night,
(03:34):
that gift was about to arrive.
S2 (03:38):
Whoa! Waiting hundreds and hundreds of years. That's a long
time to look forward to something.
S1 (03:44):
For real. I've had a hard enough time waiting in
between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
S3 (03:48):
It was a long wait, so you can imagine the
excitement of. Wait a minute, what? Why don't we actually
imagine the excitement, huh? Let's imagine together the first Christmas
and the excitement that it brought with it.
S2 (04:08):
Oh, I love that idea.
S1 (04:10):
Yeah. Jingle all the way, Miss Amelia.
S4 (04:12):
I like that idea, too.
S3 (04:14):
Okay, we'll all start. Let's back up a few months
before the first Christmas. God's promise for the king to
come was still known by his people. And he was
putting things in place for the great King's arrival. This
story starts in a town called Judea. There lived a
man named Zechariah with his wife Elizabeth. They were good,
(04:38):
God fearing people. In fact, Zechariah was a priest, a
man who worked for the Lord. They had lived many,
many years.
S1 (04:47):
So in other words, they were old.
S3 (04:50):
Yes, they were old. And sadly, even though they may
have really wanted them, they had no children, and in
any normal situation they would never have had children. But
one day that all changed.
S5 (05:08):
Zechariah, you've been chosen to go into the temple of
the Lord to burn incense.
S6 (05:14):
Okay. If all goes as normal, I'll be out soon.
S3 (05:19):
So Zechariah went into the temple and burned incense before
God on behalf of God's people. But all did not
go as normal. When he was in that temple near
the altar of incense, someone appeared.
S7 (05:35):
Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayers have been heard,
and your wife will have a baby. He will be
a special baby. One that will help prepare the people
for the arrival of the promised King.
S6 (05:49):
Uh. Are you sure? I mean, my wife and I
are really old, and my wife is unable to have kids.
S7 (05:58):
Of course, I stand before God and am his messenger.
Because you did not believe me. You will be silent,
but these things will happen.
S3 (06:09):
And what the angel said That did happen. Zechariah couldn't
speak for months, but his wife did become pregnant. And
when the baby was born, Zechariah gave instructions to name
the baby John and then he could speak again.
S1 (06:25):
John was also a part of the Christmas story, right?
S3 (06:28):
He sure was. He was the one God chose to
come just a few months before Jesus, and who God
would use to prepare people to believe that Jesus was
really the king that they had been waiting for.
S2 (06:41):
Wow.
S3 (06:42):
Yes, and I love this part of the story because
God used Elizabeth and Zechariah, a couple who thought they
would never have children, to prepare the way for the King.
It gives me hope to trust God and His timing
for things that I hope for, knowing his timing is perfect,
(07:02):
and when he says yes to a prayer, it will
be in a time that brings himself the most glory.
S1 (07:07):
That's amazing.
S3 (07:09):
It really is.
S1 (07:10):
I mean, God used all sorts of people to help
the world be ready for this king.
S3 (07:15):
Oh, yeah, he did.
S1 (07:16):
Which leads me to the part of the Christmas story
I would like to share. This is a little over
a year after Zechariah lost his voice, the angel Gabriel
had given news to Mary that she was going to
be the mom of the king the world was waiting for.
A young woman carrying the Son of God. And on
the night that Jesus was born, God chose to share
the news with an unlikely, unpopular group of people. First.
S8 (07:45):
Here we are, just another night outside of town, watching
our sheep.
S9 (07:50):
Oh, Levi.
S5 (07:52):
Is that you? I told you to warn us before
you just let one go.
S10 (07:57):
It wasn't me. I thought it was you.
S5 (08:00):
No way.
S8 (08:01):
You guys. I think it was old Seymour. He ate
some brown grass earlier, and I think he's letting us
know how it made him feel.
S5 (08:09):
Well, let's make sure he gets the good grass tonight.
I can't take this smell. It's in my mouth. I
can taste it.
S10 (08:19):
This job stinks.
S5 (08:21):
Literally.
S11 (08:24):
Wait, what was that?
UU (08:27):
Huh? What? There was a flash. Ah! Ah!
S7 (08:34):
Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that
will cause great joy for all the people. Today in
the town of David, a Savior has been born to you.
He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a
sign to you. You will find a baby wrapped in
cloths and lying in a manger. What?
S11 (08:55):
Did you hear that?
S5 (08:56):
Of course I did. This is amazing. The one we've
been waiting for.
S10 (09:00):
Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go.
S1 (09:05):
And they did. They found the baby just like the
angel had told them they would. And then they went
around and told all that they could. That the king
had finally arrived.
S3 (09:15):
That's amazing. How do you think those shepherds felt?
S1 (09:20):
You know, I think they felt important. They had a
pretty nasty job. One that was seen as pretty unimportant
by others. But God showed them that they were important
to him. They didn't have to be rich or extra
smart or even clean, but they were some of the
very first to know about the King's special arrival.
S3 (09:39):
I think you're completely right, Max. Even in the people
that God chose to first share about the king's birth,
we see that our value comes from God, not what
we do or what others think of us.
S1 (09:53):
Bingo!
S3 (09:54):
And the king was born. The Messiah was born. His
name was Jesus. He had come to save the world.
S2 (10:02):
Yes. And one of the people he came to save
was a man by the name of Simeon. 40 days
after Jesus was born, his parents took him to the
temple to offer sacrifices that were required by Jewish law.
The same day, the Holy Spirit led an old righteous
man to the temple. And his name was Simeon.
S12 (10:24):
Okay, Mary. We need a pair of doves or two
pigeons for the sacrifice.
S13 (10:28):
Okay. I think I see someone selling birds over there.
Maybe he has some.
S5 (10:35):
Who am I? He's arrived. The promised king. May I
hold him?
S13 (10:40):
Oh, um. Of course.
S5 (10:43):
O Lord, just as you've promised, here is the Messiah.
I have seen the rescuer, the one who will save
the world from all sin.
S13 (10:52):
Joseph. I think he knows who Jesus is.
S12 (10:55):
He does?
S5 (10:57):
Yes. God led me here today. As you can see, I'm, well,
very old. But I was given a promise long ago
that I would see the king our people have waited
for before I died. And here I am, holding him
the best gift. May the Lord bless you both as
you raise this child, the Son of God.
S13 (11:19):
Thank you.
S2 (11:21):
This man knew that this baby was going to change
the world. He knew that he was going to save
people from their sin, and that even he who was
a righteous man needed this baby. He had finally got
to see the promise of God.
S3 (11:34):
Man, what a day for Simeon. I'm sure he was thrilled.
S2 (11:39):
I have no doubt that it was the best day
of his life. Something he had waited for his whole
life finally happened.
S3 (11:45):
His anticipation was finally fulfilled.
S2 (11:48):
Absolutely.
S4 (11:50):
Uh, I have one more part of the Christmas story
I'd like to add.
S3 (11:54):
Yes, we'd love to hear it.
S4 (11:56):
It's a bit different. And a while after Jesus was born. Right?
You're right. Okay, I thought so. So you may have
to help me out. All of this is a bit
new to me.
S3 (12:08):
You got this.
S4 (12:09):
Well, all those in the story so far, at least
as far as we know, were part of God's chosen people.
They were Jewish, but they weren't the only ones that
were part of the Great King's arrival. There was another
group of people that lived farther away. They came from
the east.
S6 (12:30):
My lord, where is the king?
S5 (12:32):
Yes. The one who has come to be King of
the Jews.
S7 (12:35):
What are you talking about? I am king here.
S6 (12:38):
No, we are talking about the one who has been
promised throughout all of history. We saw his star in
the sky. Yes, that's why we've come. The star showed up.
S5 (12:51):
It's the sign that he is here.
S4 (12:53):
You see, the wise men from another land had known
that the special king had arrived because they watched the stars.
And many years before, a man named, uh. Daniel. That's right. Daniel.
He had told the people in the East about the
Messiah and some of the clues that would show he
(13:15):
had arrived. But King Herod, the king of that area,
did not want there to be another king. He tried
to trick the wise men and told them to find
the king and let him know where he was. So
they did find Jesus, and when they did, they worshipped
(13:36):
him and gave him special gifts. Gold.
S3 (13:41):
Uh, frankincense and myrrh.
S4 (13:43):
Yes, those.
S3 (13:45):
And did they return to King Herod?
S4 (13:47):
Nope, they did not.
S3 (13:50):
Great job. Colin.
S4 (13:52):
Thanks.
S3 (13:53):
And what can we learn from those wise men?
S4 (13:56):
Well, I learned that God wanted everyone to know about Jesus.
Those that were known as his people and those that
were far away from where his people lived.
S3 (14:07):
Yes. A king who came to save the whole world.
S2 (14:11):
Jesus, the promised King.
S1 (14:13):
The one that so many had waited for.
S2 (14:16):
For so long.
S3 (14:18):
You got it, guys.
S2 (14:19):
And as we wait for tomorrow morning to come, it
can help remind us a little of what these people
felt when they waited for him.
S3 (14:26):
And they received the greatest gift of all, a gift
that is offered to us still to this day.
S2 (14:33):
And although I really want to open gifts tomorrow, Jesus
really is the best gift that he is.
S3 (14:41):
He is because he is the one God gave us
to bring us back to him so we could be
friends with God.
S2 (14:49):
And that's what Christmas is all about.
S1 (14:52):
So we hope you have a wonderful holiday with your family.
S2 (14:55):
And as you get excited and maybe start to feel
it in your stomach, maybe stop and thank God for
sending Jesus.
S3 (15:01):
Yes, and thank him that his timing is perfect.
S1 (15:05):
And that he sent Jesus to flip the world upside down.
That God.
S2 (15:08):
Always keeps his promises, and Jesus is the greatest gift.
S4 (15:12):
And that he came for all the near and far.
S2 (15:17):
Merry Christmas. Honeycomb chronicoms.
