He's here to help us. Sound good? Say hello. Colin.
S4 (01:17):
Hello, Colin.
S3 (01:18):
Today our episode is about Ecclesiastes.
S2 (01:21):
But before we jump into what Ecclesiastes is all about. Max,
do you want to go for a ride?
S3 (01:28):
A ride? What do you mean by a ride?
S2 (01:31):
How do you feel about roller coasters?
S3 (01:35):
Well, I love them, but we can't just leave to
go on a roller coaster right now. Elena, we're in
the middle of a podcast.
S2 (01:42):
Well, what if we take our listening audience with us?
S3 (01:46):
Oh, okay. I'm down. Great.
S2 (01:49):
Everyone listening? If you're not sitting down, find a seat.
S3 (01:52):
Quick and close your eyes if you can, because we're
about to go on a roller coaster.
S5 (01:59):
Welcome to the Honey Coaster, a ride filled with the highs, lows.
And you just never know. Please reach above and pull
down the shoulder security feature. Once you've pulled down, secure
it with the provided buckle.
S6 (02:13):
Oh, man.
S3 (02:14):
I'm getting nervous. Me too.
S2 (02:17):
Let's make sure we're secure.
S3 (02:18):
Reach for the shoulder straps and pull down. Buckle in.
I hope this thing doesn't break. All right, folks.
S5 (02:25):
Please lean back in your chairs. Relax if you can,
and enjoy the ride. Here we go. In three.
UU (02:35):
Two, one. Oh, this isn't so bad. No.
S3 (02:40):
But with each second, we seem to be getting a
bit higher and higher and higher. I'm leaning back. So far,
it's almost like I'm looking directly at the sky.
S2 (02:50):
Oh, but it's so pretty and blue with those white
fluffy clouds.
S3 (02:54):
Oh, what a beautiful day.
S2 (02:57):
Wait. The clicking stopped.
S3 (02:59):
And so did we. Lena! Ah, Lena! Hands up! My
hands are up. Sharp left turn. Sharp right. Uh oh. Tunnels.
UU (03:10):
I can't see anything. I can't even see what's coming next.
Did we just go upside down?
S3 (03:15):
I think so. I'm gonna be sick. There's a light.
Now we're through. Another left turn. Another right one. It's
slow again. Okay, it's all good. That didn't last long.
UU (03:26):
Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow! Can I?
S3 (03:36):
What a ride. Thank you for.
S5 (03:39):
Riding the honey coaster. A ride filled with highs and lows.
And you just never know. You may unbuckle and exit
the ride. We'll see you again soon.
S3 (03:49):
Lina, your hair is wild. Hey, weren't.
S2 (03:52):
You on that roller coaster? What did you expect?
S3 (03:54):
That was a great ride. A bit scary at times,
but pretty fun for sure. Woo!
S2 (04:00):
You know, the book of Ecclesiastes is a bit like
the honey coaster.
S7 (04:04):
Mm.
S3 (04:04):
How so? Lina.
S2 (04:06):
Well, just like the operator said, the ride was filled
with some highs. Some lows, and it definitely brought some,
I don't knows.
S3 (04:13):
Yeah, there were totally some things I did not see coming.
S2 (04:16):
Right in a similar way. Our life has highs and
lows and lots of unknowns.
S3 (04:21):
Most definitely. And Ecclesiastes tells us that pretty clearly.
S2 (04:25):
It sure does. Ecclesiastes talks a lot about the good
things in life and the hard things. It also tells
us that we find some things in life that will
never fully understand.
S3 (04:34):
That's right. And like how we weren't in control of
the honey coaster, we have to realize we aren't fully
in control of the world around us either. Nope.
S2 (04:41):
And because of that, we don't know what's coming next.
We had to trust that the builders and engineers of
the roller coaster knew what they were doing.
S3 (04:49):
And we have to trust the builder and operator of
our lives and the world. That would be God himself.
You know it.
S2 (04:55):
And though we might not enjoy every part of our life,
especially the parts that are hard or sad, when we
realize that we aren't in control, we find peace and
trust in him.
S3 (05:04):
She shoots and scores.
S2 (05:06):
Okay, I think I need a minute for my stomach
to settle from the ride. So why don't you go
ahead and give us a few more details on Ecclesiastes
with a rapid review?
S3 (05:15):
I can do that. You got time on the clock? Yep.
S2 (05:19):
30s and.
S3 (05:21):
Go. Ecclesiastes is a wisdom book that was written down
by a man that we don't know the name of,
but he was writing down words from a wise teacher
who was usually thought to be King Solomon. The book
doesn't really have a story to it, but rather gives
us instructions on how to look at our lives. One
of the words that I use over 30 times in
Ecclesiastes is the English word meaningless. It would better be
translated as vapor, kind of like smoke. The teacher of
(05:43):
Ecclesiastes is instructing us that things in life will come
and go. There will be highs and lows. There are
things to enjoy and things that will bring sadness. But
if we trust God, we can have peace. We can
know that all these things will only last for a
little while. The good helps us remember God's goodness, and
(06:04):
the bad helps us hope for heaven more. I'll end
my review with one of the last verses that the
author writes. Now all has been heard. Here is the
conclusion of the matter fear God and keep his commandments.
For this is the duty of all mankind.
S2 (06:16):
Right on time, yet again. Yes. Thanks for that rapid review, Max.
S3 (06:21):
You got it.
S2 (06:22):
Now time for a game.
S3 (06:24):
Boomshakalaka. I'm ready to win.
S2 (06:26):
Well, it's not so much a game you can win.
Just a game you play.
S3 (06:30):
Uh, what?
S2 (06:31):
It's called this or that.
S3 (06:33):
Okay. Well, how do we play?
S2 (06:35):
Well, I'm going to go through a list of things
that are opposite from each other, like inside or outside.
And then you have to decide which one you would
choose by either clapping or making a pop sound.
S3 (06:47):
Okay. Seems easy enough.
S2 (06:49):
And our listeners can play along too. Okay. Max. Chocolate
or vanilla?
S3 (06:54):
Chocolate all the way.
S2 (06:56):
Me too. Okay. Next. Waffles or pancakes?
S3 (07:00):
Pancakes with extra syrup, please.
S2 (07:03):
Summer or winter?
S3 (07:05):
Summer. Cause summer means baseball. That's easy.
S2 (07:08):
Something sweet or something salty.
S3 (07:12):
I just like them both together. Ice cream with spicy crispies. Mhm.
That's the way to go.
S2 (07:18):
I forgot you like to do that. Uh, okay. Crying
or laughing?
S3 (07:23):
Does anyone like to cry?
S2 (07:25):
Uh, I think my mom does. She cries at almost
every movie. Okay, last one, and I bet I already
know the answer. Winning or.
S3 (07:34):
Losing? Winning all the way. I really don't like to lose. Yeah, I'm.
S2 (07:38):
Sure everyone was clapping on that one. Good job Max.
It's fun to get to know you more, and it's
fun for you, the listeners, to play along as well.
S3 (07:46):
So, you know, I like to win, Lena. And since
I couldn't win at that game, what was the point
of it?
S2 (07:50):
Well, I gave you options, and they were usually opposite
from each other, or at least different.
S3 (07:55):
Uh huh.
S2 (07:56):
And in Ecclesiastes, there's a whole list of opposite things.
S3 (08:00):
Oh, right. In chapter three.
S2 (08:02):
That's right. The teacher gives a long list of things
that happen in life, and there is an opposite to
each of them laughing and crying, building and tearing down
silence and talking.
S3 (08:12):
He says there's a time for each. And that God
made everything beautiful in its time. Yep. But can you
remind me again why there is time for everything I mean,
so much that life brings is hard.
S2 (08:22):
You're right. And there are things in life that are
extra hard because the world is full of sin. But
the good things remind us of God's goodness and the bad,
and hard things remind us of our need for God
and the hope of heaven for those that are in Jesus.
S3 (08:35):
So there really is beauty in every part of life.
S2 (08:38):
When your heart and mind are fixed on the God
of the universe, no matter the highs, lows, or I
don't know's you're experiencing, you can for sure find that
there is beauty.
S3 (08:47):
Huh? And here I thought Ecclesiastes was a bummer of
a book.
S2 (08:51):
Well, when we started studying it and read those lines,
life is meaningless. I did too, but it turns out
to be a really helpful book.
S3 (09:00):
And once again, God's Word proves to be helpful.
S2 (09:03):
It always is.
S3 (09:04):
Well, looks like that's the end of our show on Ecclesiastes.
S2 (09:07):
Ecclesiastes. What a ride.
S3 (09:10):
One I won't soon forget.
S2 (09:11):
I hope we all remember the truths of Ecclesiastes our
entire lives.
S3 (09:15):
And cling to the one who knows all things, no
matter what we're walking.
S2 (09:18):
Through. Until next time.
S3 (09:20):
I'm Lina and I'm Max. Him?
S4 (09:23):
Oh, and I'm Colin.
S3 (09:25):
The honey. Cast. Crew. Signing off until next month.
UU (09:28):
Adios, honey. Come chronic. Cause.
