From recording with Darkchild to nearly landing the smash hit "Replay" before Zendaya, Samantha shares the twists and turns of pop music’s behind-the-scenes magic.

But the real jaw-dropper? Samantha reveals how she was this close to starring in Britney Spears' iconic "Piece of Me" music video — the set was booked, the glam team was ready, and Samantha was literally in the car before the call came: "Don’t come." It's a story you won’t want to miss.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Flying back in time.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
This is the Germaine Plane.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Ah. Yes, hello, it's Jamaine here and welcome to a
bonus episode of the Jermaine Plane. If you don't know,
this podcast is also a radio show. It airs every
Friday nights on nov Throwbacks. You can listen on the
noverplay app or on Apple Music. And when it started out,
I just wanted some musicians on the show to share

(00:27):
their favorite throwbacks. So request their favorite throwbacks, we have
a chat about them, and we play them on the show,
just as simple as that. But as I started doing
this show more and more, I was getting the most
fascinating stories from them about these throwback songs. And of
course because they're musicians, and in the case of Samantha Jade,
I think I got the scoop behind quite a few

(00:50):
stories that she's never shared with anyone before. You're going
to hear stories about the producer she's worked with, a
really popular song that could have only s been hers,
and a Britney Spears music video that could have been
Samantha Jades, some real interesting stuff. So this is what
you're going to get every week when I have a

(01:10):
guest on my show. Not only just the podcast, but
also their favorite throwbacks. So enjoy Samantha Jades for now
and when you can listen to the Jermain Plane Nova
Throwbacks every Friday night on the Nova Player app. Your
first throwback as co pilot on the Jermain Plane, What
is it, samaria Jo?

Speaker 3 (01:27):
My first throwback is he Wasn't Man Enough for Me
by Tony Braxton. So there's a story behind this, Okay,
I okay, So I just love this song. Love blah
blah blah bl like Tony Braxton, her voice, how she
can sing so low, She's so talented. This song's produced
by Dark Child Rodney Jerkins, and I worked with him
when I went to the States. Yes, so I went

(01:49):
to when I was in LA. They flew me to
New Jersey and he had a place in New Jersey,
this studio, and I went to go work with him
and I worked with him and Lashawan who did.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
This record Daniels, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Shawn Daniels, And we did this record together at not
This It was called Boyfriend was the song and it
was gonna be my single actually, And I was like
desperate to ask what Brandy was like because I'm a
huge Brandy fan. And then I was like, wanted to
ask about this session. I was like, what was what
was Tony like? And they're like, oh my gosh, she's
so amazing, such a great singer.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
So wow, yeah, okay.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Cool, Well let's get it on here in the Jermaine
Plane Samantha ja Coe pilot or no throwbacks he wasn't
man enough by Tony Braxton. All right, well let's get
into our next throwback. Y, You're on the Jermaine Plane
Samantha Jade as co pilot Sammy.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Okay, so this one is Replay by Zendaya. Oh yes,
I love Zendaya so much. She is such a superstar.
Talk about a triple threat. That's a triple threat. I
love her so much. But this song, the story behind
this is that when I one X Factor, they were
looking for songs, obviously for my record. My friend Zach
comes in with this song. He's like, I reckon, you

(02:57):
should record this. It's called replay. It's such a great song.
And I was like, listen to it and I was obsessed.
I loved it because his friend wrote it, and I
was like, I love this song. By the time we
said yes, they had already placed it on Zendaya, you're.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Telling me that replay was going to be a Samantha
Ja song.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
It was going to go on that first album. Oh no,
I know. But then we wouldn't have had Firestarter.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Okay, so perfect, Yeah, because then we went in and
we wrote Firestarter.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Yeah, but isn't that so crazy?

Speaker 1 (03:28):
It's so crazy.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
I love that song so much.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
But she sounds great on it, and I'm so glad
that she got it because it's iconic.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Samantha Jade, what is your final throwback this evening here
on the Germaine plane.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Okay, so I had to end on a Britney song,
Britney spears. I mean, come on Britney and you and
I in the club dancing to Britain.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Absolutely, this is a real thing, really done. This, that's
our girl.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
We're going to get in with. I'm a slave for
your choreography of.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Every sing Yes, yes, you're coming over and teaching. Yes,
this is not slave. So this is peace of me.
So this video, this is a crazy story too. So
obviously we're signed to the same label. At this time,
I had just gone to Sweden to record with Bloodshi
and a aunt who did Toxic at the time, and

(04:16):
then worked with Danger, who did Peace of Me right,
and so we're kind of working with the same people.
And all I wanted to do was see Brittany. I
was like, one day I'm going to go into the
green room and be getting a coffee and she will
be there.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Never happened. Never happened.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
And she had kids at the time, and I would
see them setting up like the cots in like the
green room for the kids, and I'd be like, she's coming.
But then I would always leave and she would come after.
So I'm never going to meet it anyway. All that
to say, I'm sitting at home. One day, I get
my mum gets a call and they're like, where's Samantha.
My Mom's like, we're just at home, we're doing nothing.
She's like they're like, okay, get her ready. She needs

(04:51):
to be ready tonight. She might have to come in
and do something.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
That's it so vague right. My Mom's like, okay, what
she gonna do? Like a performance?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
They're like, yep, yep, some kind of a performances.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
My Mum's like.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Okay, and they call back, they're like, okay, yeah, she
needs to get like we need to get her here,
like she got. She tell her to wash her hair.
There's hair and makeup ready for her. Tell her, like
to get down here. She's going to have to learn
some corry and she's going to have to like work
through the night, shoot through the night.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
I'm okay because it was like a nighttime. I'm like,
what is going? But that's all.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
They wouldn't give us details. It's like this is okay,
but you know you're in la.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
You say yes to it, You're like sure.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
So I'm about to get in the car. There's a
car that comes to pick me up. I'm about to
get in the car. We get a call. Don't worry
about it, false alarm, don't come down right.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
We never knew what it was.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
I was like, that's so weird. The next day, my
mom and I are at the Beverly Center. Of course,
we are shopping because we've got anything else to do, shopping,
and we're watching. We're in PF Chain's, which was this
restaurant at the front, and there's we're watching like there's
a screen, you know, a TV, and I see myself
on a split screen with Britney on the TV, and

(06:02):
I'm like, that's me.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
What am I doing? On the screen.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Yeah, and then so we were like, can excuse me
to the guy, We like, can you turn that up
for a second. He's like yeah, sure, He's like, oh,
that's you. I'm like yeah. So it ended up that
what it was going to be was that Piece of
Me the video. Britney was kind of going through a
lot of that time, and she wasn't showing up to
the video set, so they had Jivid had this video
set there and makeup the dancers, the whole thing. No, Britney,

(06:29):
and my song was coming out at the time as well,
so I think they just wanted to like kind of
put me in there and that.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Would have been my video. She didn't show up. Yeah,
what isn't that crazy?

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Your music video would have been the set of Pieces
of Me.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Would have been my video. Yeah. Yeah, I was getting
ready to go there.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
I was in the car, but I didn't know this
until the next day when I'm watching and then my
mum like obviously calls my management, calls Jive and they're like, yeah,
that was gonna happen. But then Brittany, you know, showed up,
and so Saunding's down the line kind of thing.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Yeah, buddy, hell Britney Spears.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You know, anyone else take the day or Sweet clad Off,
I'll take a boy year. Oh my gosh, isn't it wild?
That is so crazy?

Speaker 1 (07:14):
I know.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
I love that video too.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Oh my god about the set with like the lights
at the back.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Of love that video so much.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
God.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah, I think we've just unlocked one of the biggest
stories for gay men all over Australia.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
I'll show you the clip. It's on It was on Extra.
That was the thing that was on TV at the
time that my mum and I saw. Yeah, so i'll
show you after so incredible.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yeah, okay, well let's get that on please right now.
On the Germain Place me as co pilot flying back
in time.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
This is the Germain plane.
