Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tonight, a nation continues to mourn the passing of Charlie Kirk.
His longtime friend Andrew Colvitt joins us to reflect on
his life and legacy. Plus, Clemson University is doing its
best to ignore calls for accountability for some of its
staff celebrating Charlie Kirk's assassination. A former lawmaker from South
Carolina is here to give his perspective. Also, Trump vows

(00:20):
to declare a national emergency in DC because the mayor
won't let DC police cooperate with ICE. We've got a
former immigration judge a stopping by to give thoughts. And
Brazil has convicted in sentenced its former president, Jayra Bolsonaro
for allegedly plotting a coup while at Disney World. We've
got all that more next on The Mac Gates Show,
let's do.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
This shaking up Washington, d C.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
We're breaking the fever.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
Do you ever watch this guy on television?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
It's like a machine. He's great.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
Matt Gates.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
As we join you this evening, America remains a nation
in mourning following a weekend of vigils and services in
honor of the life of my friend Charlie Kirk. Charles
James Kirk born October fourteenth, nineteen ninety three. He was
assassinated September tenth, last week. He lived a life defined
by conviction, purpose, and influence that reached far beyond his years.

(01:18):
He was a builder of movements. From age eighteen, Charlie
devoted himself to giving a voice to ideas he believed
in conservative values, free speech, and the power of youth.
I come from the generation whose politics was in many
ways explained by John's John Mayer's song waiting on the
World to change. Millennials faced with forever wars, stock market cratches,

(01:40):
and wage stagnation have often felt powerless to impact political events.
Charlie Kirk convinced young people that real political power and
influence they could do things. Part of that influence was
building the Turning Point organization. Will take a look into
that organization tonight and where it stands. But understated is

(02:02):
the role of Charlie Kirk in building the current incarnation
of the Trump administration. Charlie moved his young family to
Palm Beach during the transition. He interviewed candidates, he made suggestions,
and supported President Trump with all he had. Charlie Kirk
became close with virtually every key player of the administration,
including our friend Director of National Intelligence Tulci Gabbard. Here

(02:25):
is Tulci remembering her friend at a memorial in Washington,
DC this weekend.

Speaker 6 (02:29):
And they lived by the principle that no matter how
horrible another person's speech may be, their ideas must be
defeated by better ideas, not by resorting to violence. We
cannot allow ourselves to be terrorized into silence. We need
to live Charlie Kirk's example. Charlie changed hearts and minds

(02:55):
of countless people around the world because he made a conscious.

Speaker 7 (02:59):
Choice every day to choose love. He said, my prayer
is very simple, God, use me for your will.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
But the most moving testimony about Charlie came from his
amazing widow, Erica Kirk. We don't even know how she
formed the words, but Erica Kirk addressed the nation in
one of the most powerful speeches I have ever heard.

Speaker 8 (03:28):
My husband laid down his life for me, for our nation,
for our children. He showed the ultimate and true covenantal love.
The evildoers responsible for my husband's assassination have no idea

(03:50):
what they have done. They killed Charlie because he preached
a message of patriotism and of God's merciful.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Love evil doers.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Indeed, you know what really struck me about this speech,
and I can't stop thinking about this detail. Erica Kirk
never blamed the political left, not once. Go rewatch her speech.
Not one time did miss Kirk, my friend blame the Democrats,
left wingers, the trans not once. Erica Kirk has plenty

(04:28):
of wrath for her husband's killers, and if you listen carefully,
she consistently refers to those responsible, not in the singular,
but in the plural.

Speaker 8 (04:38):
They should all know this. If you thought that my
husband's mission was powerful before, you have no idea. You
have no idea what you just have unleashed across this
entire country, in this world. You have no idea. You

(05:02):
have no idea the fire that you have ignited within
this wife. The cries of this widow will echo around
the world like a battle cry.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
It seems that Erica Kirk reasonably believes that more than
one person is responsible for killing Charlie. She'll be an
inspiring figure in politics and faith for Americans. For many years.
She's pointed to the entire globe.

Speaker 8 (05:33):
For my husband's mission will not end, not even for
a moment. It will become stronger, bolder, louder, and greater
than ever. And in a world filled with chaos, doubt
and uncertainty, my husband's voice will remain, and it will
ring out louder and more clearly than ever. Our battle
is not simply a political one. Above all, it is spiritual.

(05:57):
It is spiritual. The spiritual warfare is palpable, and our
world is filled with evil. But our God, you guys,
are God, is.

Speaker 9 (06:09):
So good.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Erica Kirk moved us with that speech that one vowed
revenge against her husband's killers, two clearly indicates that she
believes more than one person is responsible for Charlie's death,
and three notably does not presume that the killers were
members of the political left in America. And four points
to people all over the globe who will continue to

(06:34):
feel the impact of Charlie's activism. This program will be
a place where you can regularly come to experience some
of the best of Charlie Kirk. He will be forever young,
forever brilliant.

Speaker 9 (06:46):
And on point at Epstein with his little friend Glaine
and Galaine's father, Robert Maxwell, who is obviously a spy
of the Israeli intelligence agencies, that there was something else
going on here. Jeffrey Epstein was not a financier. He
was not a hedge fund manager. Jeffrey Epstein was a
key player in a multi decade blackmail operation against the

(07:11):
most powerful people on the planet.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Megan.

Speaker 9 (07:13):
Remember Alexander Acosta in two thousand and seven, he said
he was told to treat Epstein carefully because he was.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
An intel asset.

Speaker 9 (07:22):
That was that was one of Trump's cabinet secretaries, who
was literally a US attorney three hours from here in Florida.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
He said that.

Speaker 9 (07:31):
Himself, I have less ability sometimes online to criticize the
Israeli government about backlash than actual Israelis do. And that's
really really weird, isn't it, Meghan? Any deviation whatsoever, such
as hosting a focus group, right, Meghan with a bunch
of our students that went viral, having Dave Smith or

(07:51):
Tucker at my event. It is all of a sudden,
O'charlie is a he's no longer with.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Us and all that. So wait a second, what do
you mean? What is with mean?

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Exactly right?

Speaker 9 (08:02):
I'm an American, Okay, Like I I represent this country
and to be fair, some of my really good Jewish
friends are like, that's not all of us, it's all
But these are leaders too, though, right, these are these
are stakeholders, right, And so look I am I'm I'm
afraid because again, I want civilization to win. I want
the West to win. I don't want the Islamo fascist

(08:22):
barbarians to storm the gates of Jerusalem. I want the
Holy sites protected. I believe in the Holy Land. I
love that Jesus walked on water there and rose from
the dead and preached in the the amount of the beatitudes,
like I feel the connection to Israel and I But
at the same time, simultaneously, when the hostile reaction is

(08:44):
that now Meghan and Charlie are enemies.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Boy, I'll tell.

Speaker 9 (08:49):
You like you're you're, you're, you're you're gonna. You're not gonna,
I would say, lose, but you will weaken and just
basically deflate two of your strongest advocates. If that can take.
But I think some questions need to be asked. Was
there a stand down order? Was there a stand down
order six hours? I don't believe it. I've been to

(09:10):
that Gaza border. You cannot go ten feet without running
into a nineteen year old with an AR fifteen or
an automatic machine gun as an IDF soldier. Right, the
whole country is surveiled. The last nine months, Israel was
on the brink of civil war. It's not an exaggeration
this judicial stuff. There were hundreds of thousands of Israelis
taking to the streets because BB NETANYAHUO is basically redefining

(09:32):
the Israeli constitution. That's not an exaggeration, right. He said
the judicial branch is too much power. There were protests
planned this week against Netanyahu where they anticipated tens of
thousands of people to take to the streets. That's all gone, Patrick,
This is the closest thing to the Holocaust that any
of us have lived through. But the fact is now
BB and the Israeli hard right government has a mandate.

(09:56):
I gotta be careful the way I say this too.
They're going to try to ethnically cleanse.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
With this now from the White House. Is the official
spokesperson for Turning Point USA. Longtime friend of Charlie Kirk
and friend of mine, Andrew Colvett. Andrew, you were Charlie
Kirk's right hand man. This must be a really intense
moment for you and for the core leadership team at
Turning Point. What's Turning Point's message to the country in
the world.

Speaker 10 (10:23):
Well, yeah, thank you Matt for having me on. Our
message to the world is that an assassin tried to
stop this movement by taking out our amazing, incredible, inspiring
founder and CEO. But he will fail, and this movement
will grow. Turning Point will grow, and we refuse, as

(10:45):
Erica said in her address just a few days ago,
we refuse to let this evil doer snuff out any
of the bright light that was Charlie Kirk. And that
is his legacy and is his message to the country
and really, Matt, to the world.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Erica gave a remarkable speech. What struck me was that
she didn't just say an evil doer. She talked about
evil doers. And she also did not blame the political left.
She I think was quite reserved in that. Does the
Kirk family, Does the Kirk orbit believe that more than

(11:27):
one person was involved in this killing? And you know,
do you believe that there could have been an even
more sinister motivation.

Speaker 10 (11:37):
You know, we are in touch with law enforcement. They're
keeping us up to date. I'm not going to speculate
Matt about you know, any ulterior motives just yet. I
will say that we are watching it all and even
if you know it is the suspect and it's just
a lone wolf, well, we believe that he's part of

(11:59):
a lot arjor network of people that radicalized him. And
we believe that there were people that knew about it,
apparently in advance, and we are going to get to
the bottom of it.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
There was an incredible moment today when Vice President JD.
Vance hosted The Charlie Kirk Show. You're the executive producer
of that program. Talk about what it was like to
have the Vice president there giving such a moving testament
to Charlie Kirk, and what the plans are for the
show going forward.

Speaker 10 (12:33):
You know, Matt, you're one of the few people that
would get this. It weirdly felt like old times again.
And you know, Charlie endorsed.

Speaker 9 (12:44):
JD.

Speaker 10 (12:45):
You know, when he was like three percent in the
polls run for Senate in Ohio, and I remember Charlie's like,
we got to get this guy on the show. He's amazing,
and I had heard of his book, but I remember,
you know, JD. Didn't have a beard the time, and
then you know, obviously, but it was this amazing episode.
They went for like an hour and a half and
it's just this long discussion and then you know, we

(13:07):
would have JD back again and again and again. And
when JD became the vice presidential nominee, you know, they
were sure to reach out and say, hey, JD wants
to come on, and you know, you'd be one of
the first shows. And they've just always been that way,
and so to get that call that the Vice president himself,

(13:28):
Matt wanted to do this, This was his idea, and
for us to have that honor to produce the Vice
President's show along with his team certainly, and for him
to bring in such a star studded group of guests
like Susie Wiles and Steven Miller and RFK Junior and

(13:48):
Tucker Carlson, I mean, it was it was truly a remarkable.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Day that we just had.

Speaker 10 (13:55):
And I believe, ironically the most poignant part was the
end Matt where he closed out and it was really
a call to action to the audience and there there
was not a you know, there was nobody that was
not paying attention at that moment. I can tell you
we were fixated on the words that the Vice President
was saying because it felt truly important.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
It felt so.

Speaker 10 (14:18):
Important, and I believe it will prove to be as
more and more people see what he had to say
to the country.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
People do seem to be inspired to action, attending church
on Sunday, getting involved politically, starting new chapters. Can you
give us an update how many requests Turning Point has
gotten to start new chapters? And we also hear you've
had a remarkable outflow of financial support to continue Charlie's
legacy with boots on the ground of fighting for electoral victories.

Speaker 10 (14:50):
Yeah, it's been It's been amazing, and what a testament
to the human being that Charlie Kirk was and to
his message and to his faith. Matt, you know, you
could have two people say the same thing, but when
Charlie said it, it would change hearts all around the world
because it came from such a place of integrity, such
a core of honesty, and you just can't fake that,

(15:13):
and people can see it. It comes through on the
clips even and obviously you know, Matt, that it came
through in person, behind closed doors, but you know the
outpouring has been incredible. We had twelve hundred high school
chapters and nine hundred college chapters, and at a presence
on thirty five hundred college and high school chapters combined.
Right loosely, we have had in the last couple of

(15:36):
days thirty seven thousand applications to start turning Point USA
chapters across the country.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
It's truly remarkable.

Speaker 10 (15:46):
We were already the largest youth conservative organization of the country,
and to see that that outpouring of people that are
basically demanding from us, just like Charlie Wood, that this
movement will not die, but it must grow. That we
have to fulfill the legacy, to ensure that what he
taught us, what he built, what gave the world will

(16:07):
blossom and grow and multiply.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
The work of Charlie Kirk will will never be forgotten.
It feels weird you and I here talking about him,
because usually when you and I are together, Charlie's there.
He's a part of the team, he's the leader of
the team. I did want to say to you that
in my own political account, having been a politician, I
think I've got about a couple hundred thousand dollars left

(16:34):
and some active lists of current donors, and I'll be
sending every bit of that remaining money to Turning Point
just as my small contribution to the incredible work you're doing,
and certainly ask that you continue to keep the patriotic
Americans who've been my donors engaged through the Turning Point platform,
and I would encourage them all to do that. Finally, Andrew,

(16:55):
I know there's so many Americans who are going to
be attending or watching the services on Sunday. What can
you tell folks about that and how they can connect
to what will certainly be a very powerful moment in
American history.

Speaker 10 (17:10):
Well, yeah, thank thank you, first of all, Matt for
that gesture and what a testament to you. And I know,
Charlie meant so much to you in so many ways
it's impossible to describe. And I was there to see it,
and so thank you for that. And yeah, I mean Sunday,

(17:30):
the memorial is going to be you know, I feel
like it's going to be church with the President and
vice President in Erica. Charlie, I've said it before, I'm
gonna say it again. He was not a revolutionary. He
did not want blood in the streets. He loved this country,
he loved the founder's vision for this country, and he
wanted to sustain it and heal it for the next generation,

(17:51):
for his own kids. He was not a revolutionary.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
He wanted revival.

Speaker 10 (17:55):
He wanted to see people come to know Jesus, come
to how saving faith in God. And he wanted to
see families thrive.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
And he wanted to.

Speaker 10 (18:03):
See young people full of good ideas that would make
them happy, not depressed, that would get the lies out
of their head. And he battled for that every single day.
And I mean, I just think it's gonna be people
coming together. Some of the most powerful people in the
world are coming together. And that's funny to me that
that's the second thought, that the first thought is what
it means that it might be revival church with the president.

(18:24):
I think, I think that's the way I'm thinking about it.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
What a wonderful testament to your friend. And I know
that you got tough days ahead at turning point, but
know that you have an entire movement, an entire country
of faith community behind you. Ginger and I are behind you,
and anything we can do on the mac Ads Show
to continue to advance the Great work of Turning Point
and the legacy of Charlie Kirk would be an incredible honor.

(18:49):
Andrew Colvett, the official spokesperson for Turning Point USA, one
of Charlie Kirk's best friends and closest advisers.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
We appreciate you being with us. Thank you, Matt, God
bless you.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
And coming up, we will look into some of the
concern we have at Clemson University where there still are
people on payroll who were celebrating the assassination of our
friend and great American Charlie Kirk. We've got former state
Representative Adam Morgan with us to react.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Charlie Kirk devoted his life to traveling to universities to
change minds, and the outpouring of support and patriotism and
faith following his assassination has inspired millions, but it's also
inspired some of the worst in humanity. Take former Washington
Post columnist Karen A.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Tch.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
Karen used Charlie's absence to slander his name, calling him
a white man who espoused hatred and violence. She also
claimed aimed that the sympathompathy people felt for him and
other white men make America more violent. Audia is an alone.
Her ilk is being found all over college campuses throughout America.
Several colleges and universities who fired employees for celebrating or

(22:14):
mocking the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Here's what we've learned
so far that's concerning. At South Carolina's Clemson University, two
professors and a staff member went viral for their deranged
comments on Kirk's assassination. A post by staff member Robin
Newberry reads, in a world of Charlie Kirk's and Brian
Thompson's via Tyler Robinson or Luigi Mangioni close quote, it's

(22:36):
a gleeful reference to the killing of United Healthcare CEO
who was gunned down in New York City last year.
Clemson professor Melvin Vlivar posted quote today as one of
the most beautiful days ever, just after Kirk was killed.
He then posted that no one mourns the wicked. Shortly after,
another professor, Josh Bergey, shared a Facebook post blaming Kirk

(22:59):
for his own's fascination quote it sounds to me like
karma is sometimes swift and ironic, as Kirk said, play
stupid games, win stupid prizes close quote. Clemson University responded
with a statement condemning the remarks. They fired one of
these three individuals, but didn't offer the clean sweep of
getting all of these folks out now. President Trump shared

(23:21):
his sentiment and certainly threatened Clemson University that if they
did not have people face accountability, they would only be
a more intense public outcry and more of a response
from the administration and other features of our government. Joining
us now is former South Carolina State Representative Adam Morgan.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
So, Adam, what's going on at Clemson?

Speaker 5 (23:41):
What isn't going on at Clemson? I would say that
the administration is completely botching a shocking scandal where professors
actually celebrated and won even incided violence. After the assassage
of Charlie Kirk, one of the professors went on and said,
in a world of Charlie Kirk's via Tyler Robinson, I
mean just shocking. His assassination happened on a college campus,

(24:04):
and then a professor goes and does that. It's inexcusable.
It was exposed four days ago, and while twelve different
universities and colleges across the country immediately dealt with professors
that did similar things, Clemson did nothing. They issued a
few random pr statements, complete in action, and only after

(24:24):
pretty much everyone in South Carolina politics from the South
Kront of Freedom Caucus, even to Lindsey Graham, after everyone
called them to do something, and President Trump even jumped
in and said they should be defunded of all three
hundred million dollars that they're getting from taxpayers if they
don't deal with it. They finally today fired one of
the three professors. The other two are still not fired.

(24:46):
So at this point I think it's insane that we're
four days into this. The college Republicans are saying that
the actual feeling on campus is pretty crazy. They have
students coming up yelling at them. One even said that
Donald Trump should be next. This is the kind of
environment they've created from their inaction. I think it's time
for the president of the university to get removed and

(25:07):
these other two professors immediately be terminated. This is a
unique time in American history, and conservatives have to rise
up and stop this kind of nonsense. I mean, we're
funding our own demise. Our taxpayer dollars are funding this indoctrination.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
That individual should have been terminated in the first microsecond
after such a social media post. They should not get
a dollar from the taxpayers. But I'm wondering Representative Morgan,
why the half measure?

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Right?

Speaker 1 (25:36):
If there were three university employees with offending comments, why
fire one and not the other two? Is there some
room for nuance here that the university is trying to maintain?

Speaker 5 (25:48):
Well, I think the reality is Clemson did this on purpose.
This all broke Thursday, and then the second one on Friday,
and here we are Monday, days later, and it only
now did they do anything. So I would say they
were hoping that this would all just blow over. And
the president has actually still not said a word. He's
never said anything they had this emergency board meeting a

(26:09):
scheduled for today where I hope they're talking about removing him,
But I think the reality is they wanted to blow
over And if you look at Clemson's history, they always
jump on scandals. Oh, when a student post something they
don't like, or during the Black Lives Matter movement and
all these different situations that have happened in the past,
they were all over it, removing students, censuring people. But

(26:31):
hear nothing for four days when a professor openly calls
for murder of political opponents in the wake of Charlie's assassinations.
I think it's insane, and I think that we're really
seeing for the first time the cruelty and the evil
that is on the left. We're just we're not the same,

(26:51):
and the reality is if we don't stand up to
it now, I think it's just going to get worse
and worse.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
You're a former leader within the South Carolina Freedom Caucus
and the legislature. I know you still talk to a
lot of the members of the legislature. Are they making
any plans to hold Clemson accountable for this lack of
an appropriate response?

Speaker 3 (27:10):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (27:11):
They absolutely led the way they were the ones that
broke the story. It was really the Clemson College Republicans
who initially brought this to our attention, and then the
Freedom Caucus jumped on. I'm very closely aligned. We work
together all the time, still trying to actually fix this state.
And we all went at Clemson and haven't stopped for
four days. And then President Trump waighed and he actually

(27:33):
reposted the Chairman Jordan Pace of the South Carolina Freedom
Caucus when they were the first ones to call for
a special session to immediately defund all three hundred million
dollars of the taxpayer money that's going to Clemson because
of their inaction. And then everybody jumped in after that
and agreed. But it was really President Trump's hefts that
came in once he reposted it that all the other

(27:55):
weak Republicans who were kind of sitting on the sidelines,
they all jumped in and joined in the agreement. And yes,
because of the Freedom Caucuss of this happened.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
And that's the key.

Speaker 5 (28:03):
We've got to have people, please willing.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
To fight right now, no no question about it. Please
pass along our gratitude to the Clemson College Republicans and
also those colleagues of yours in the South Carolina Freedom Caucus.
We appreciate it, and we hope that better days are
ahead for Clemson where their employees are not cheering on murder.

Speaker 5 (28:21):
Thank you, Adam Morgan, Thanks Matt, thanks for all you do.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
And coming up, Yes, and coming up, we will take
a look into President Trump's efforts to declare a national emergency.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
In Washington, d C.

Speaker 1 (28:33):
The mayor has gone full sanctuary city and she must
be stopped.

Speaker 3 (28:37):
Don't go anywhere.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
Hey, did you know that One America News Network has
launched a twenty four to seven Twitter like social media replacement.
We're calling it free Talk forty five.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
So why is it? Brandon Free Talk forty five?

Speaker 4 (28:56):
Well, free talk because you will not be censored for
express your opinion there, and forty five because forty five
is a really lucky number. So join us at free
Talk forty five and express yourself with no fear of cancelation. Ever, Hey,

(29:17):

Speaker 1 (30:57):
President Trump is on the verge of declaring a national
emergurgency because DC Mayor maryel Bowser instructed the police to
stop cooperating with ICE on deportations. In August, President Trump
declared a crime emergency in Washington, d C. He invoked
Section seven forty of the d C Home Rule Act,
which allows the federal government certain powers over DC's Metropolitan

(31:18):
Police Department during these emergencies. Now, under the order, he
federalized the Metropolitan Police Department and deployed the National Guard
plus other federal law enforcement components to assist in policing functions.
We have about eight hundred DC National Guard troops deployed,
and they were supplemented by Guard forces from other states.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
In just a few weeks.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
The place is absolutely booming for the first time in decades.
Virtually no crime. That's what President Trump said on truth
Social Now. Initially Mayor Bowser was rather cooperative with the administration,
but now she is bending to the radical left's resistance
agenda when it comes to immigration enforcement. We have a
determined president, we have are a calcitrant local government.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
So where do we go from here?

Speaker 1 (32:03):
Joining us now is fellow for Law and Policy at
the Center for Immigration Studies and a former immigration judge,
Andrew Arthur. So, Andrew, please walk us through how you
see this really game of chicken between the Trump administration
and Mayor Bowser.

Speaker 11 (32:20):
So yeah, I think that you know, as you know
haven't been a former congressman, you know that the District
of Columbia is very special in our federal order. Unlike
you know, states and localities, which can go their own
way on many things, the District of Columbia is actually
a federal district. The House Oversight Committee, which I believe

(32:42):
you were on once upon a time, has a lot
of authority over the District of Columbia, and the present
of the United States has a lot of executive authority
over the District to Columbia. So it's you know, a
little unusual, Matt, when you consider it that you know,
this federal district, it can somehow act in violation of
federal law with respect to immigration or anything else. So

(33:06):
I anticipate that the president is going to be able
to force the District Columbia to abandon its sanctuary policies,
which Mayor Belzer famously doubled down on just days after
President Trump was elected the first time. And I think
that they're going to have to do what is best
for the people of DC to get these criminals off

(33:28):
the street and out of our country.

Speaker 1 (33:32):
It is a bit surprising to me that we saw
this reversal from Mayor Bowser. I had hopes for her
when there was an initial crackdown on some of the
crime in DC, when there was an effort to hold
these juveniles accountable when they were carjacking people, threatening to
shoot people. She seemed to be willing to work with
the Trump administration. What about the Ice cooperation and the

(33:55):
immigration enforcement agenda really drove her to the far recesses
of the political left.

Speaker 11 (34:02):
So, if you think about it, DC is probably the
most liberal enclave in the United States, probably even more
liberal than Los Angeles. About ninety percent of the citizens
in the District Columbia voted for Kamala Harris for president.
You can't get much more liberal than that. And I

(34:22):
think that, you know, Bowser is looking for, you know,
attempting to hold onto the power that she has in DC.
She's been there for a number of years now, and
I think she likes the job. She wants to keep it.
It's not like she can go and become governor. And
I think that, you know, she is attempting to placate,
you know, the elites that live in Georgetown and DuPont

(34:45):
Circle and other tweety enclaves in the district Columbia. But
coming up with these plans, But you know, I think
that we need to go into some of those other
wards where you know, crime is prevalent, where they're not
quite as protected from the implications of bad policy as
you know, the folks who live in Foggy Bottom are. So,

(35:08):
you know, I really think that's the main reason why
she's decided this is the hill that she's going to
die on. These are reflexively liberal people. Anything Donald Trump
is in favor up there against and Donald Trump is
definitely in favor of immigration enforcement.

Speaker 1 (35:25):
I want to zoom out and talk about where we
are with that immigration enforcement agenda, because we get the
regular numbers regarding the deportations where people have been apprehended
and sent home, but there also seems to be a
very significant self deportation that is going on as people
are simply deciding to return to their home country rather

(35:46):
than in interface with ICE in one of these operations.
How is cis looking at this self deportation dynamics something
we really haven't seen before.

Speaker 11 (35:57):
So, yeah, we look at the community population Survey, which
is a Census Department product. They put it out every
month and we take a look at it to see
the number of foreign nationals who have left the population.
People come and leave all the time that but we've
seen a huge influx of people who fit the demographics

(36:18):
of people who are here illegally, you know, given the
amount of time that they've been in the United States,
various other factors, and we've determined that upwards of one
point six million at this point's probably closer to one
point seven million and possibly you know, two million by
the time the next numbers come out who have left voluntarily.
And it's really interesting that because if you think about it,

(36:39):
there is a two pronged effort to get these people
out of the United States, but the one prong doesn't
really seem to be on the same team as the other.
On the one hand, you have Christy nom you have
Tom Homan, you have Steven Miller, who are encouraging people
to leave while they can. But on the other hand,
you have Mayor Karen Bass Democrat in Los Angeles. You

(36:59):
have Gavin who make wild claims about ice sweeping through communities.
You see Brandon Johnson in Chicago doing the same thing,
and you know, they are literally instilling fear in the
very people that they view as their constituents through some
of their more outrageous claims. I mean, this is truly
a two front war to get these folks out, only

(37:20):
the woodside doesn't really seem to know that they're fighting.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
Well, it does seem like there was a good amount
of fighting on the streets of Los Angeles when you
had Ice not getting back up from local law enforcement
when they were out conducting legitimate law enforcement activity. You
mentioned some of the specific legal overlay on the jurisdiction
of Washington, d C. I'm wondering how much the work

(37:46):
in Washington has legs and can be replicated in other
places like Chicago or Los Angeles or Detroit, Michigan. Do
you see these as policies that may find their way
to other major sanctuaries or dictions.

Speaker 11 (38:01):
Well, you know the old saying, when the people lead,
the leaders will follow, And I think that we see
a lot of people in you know, a lot of
neighborhoods in Los Angeles, a lot of neighborhoods in Chicago,
and a lot of neighborhoods in Detroit or I go
to my birth town, Baltimore, Maryland, where there's a clamoring
amongst the people for law and order, and yet you know,

(38:21):
the elected officials don't really seem to be hearing that
clamoring yet. But I think that as we see successes
in Washington, d C. We're going to see an effort
in Memphis, Tennessee, because of course Tennessee does have a
Republican governor, and a lot of other places as this expands,
where those towns are going to be safer and they're
going to see the outcome of what the Trump administration

(38:44):
is doing, and the residents of those towns, are you
going to want the same thing? Now? Unfortunately, a lot
of these elected officials don't really represent the poor people.
Bat You and I both know that the folks who
live in the ghettos, who live, you know, lives of desperation.
You know, they're largely overlooked. They don't have the ability

(39:05):
to make political contributions, so they could ignore those people.
But they're not going to be able to ignore them
at the ballot box. And I think that you're going
to see a generation of or you're going to see
a group of you know, democratic politicians who are going
to run on a law and order message. I think
it's going to be very popular. I think it's going
to be a wake up call for a lot of
these big city mayors who have been coasting along ignoring

(39:28):
their constituents and ignoring the Crome.

Speaker 1 (39:32):
I hope you're right, but it seems like we see
them going the other way, like the Democrats that could,
even in the darkest of night, being mistaken as reasonable,
are getting driven out by the Zoronmandani and Omar Fete
likes of left wing politics.

Speaker 3 (39:49):
I do want to ask you a final question.

Speaker 1 (39:51):
We've heard from the administration that the One Big, Beautiful
Bill Act gave them all the tools they need to
really effectuate this deportation agenda.

Speaker 3 (39:59):
Do you I think there's more work for Congress.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
To do or are we really in just the administration
and execution phase of what President Trump and Vice President
Vance are working on.

Speaker 11 (40:11):
There's definitely a couple finer points that can be taken
care of. HR two, which I think you might at
one time have been a co sponsor of. Yeah, is
back in Congress, and you know what that's going to
do is it's going to take away many of those
negative incentives that draw people to the United States illegally.
I think that'd be a good thing. But go back
to what Joe Biden said, he couldn't secure the border

(40:33):
until after Congress acted. Well, that's not true. Now we
need to address the interior. I think HR two does
have a lot of good things, particularly you know, with
respect to bogus and fraudsle and asylum claims that Congress
should consider. But right now the president's using the tools
that he has, and he's using them pretty effectively.

Speaker 1 (40:54):
Andrew Arthur Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, former
immigration judge, thanks as always for coming on the program
and your expertise.

Speaker 11 (41:01):
Thanks so much, Matt, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (41:03):
And coming up, there are cluster munitions being used right
now in Europe and the war between Russia and Ukraine.
They are killing a lot of people. We've got concerns
about them, and we'll be back with David DeCamp to
address how to constrain the death caused by cluster munitions.

Speaker 1 (43:38):
Cluster bombs, they're actually awful and they're slaughtering people in
Europe today who probably don't want anything to do with
the current war between Russia and Ukraine. Cluster bombs are
the opposite of smart bombs. They indiscriminately drop from the
sky and have horrible impacts with unintended populations. Now we're
getting word that over a thousand people have been killed

(43:58):
by these Vietnam War air munitions. And guess what America
is actually sending these cluster bombs into the fight. I
worked on bipartisan legislation with congressional Democrats like Jim McGovern
and Sarah Jacobs and Republican firebrands like Corey Mills and
Eli Crane to ban the export of cluster bombs.

Speaker 3 (44:15):
Here's some of that debate last year.

Speaker 1 (44:17):
According to New York Times. Since World War Two, cluster
munitions have killed an estimated eighty six thousand, five hundred civilians. Additionally,
Human Rights Watch and the UN have reported that cluster
munitions in Ukraine have killed or wounded eight hundred and
ninety people in twenty twenty two, ninety five percent of
whom were civilians. I really miss when the Democratic Party

(44:38):
was the anti war party. Now we're going to see
probably a majority of Democrats on this vote vote for
cluster munitions that are killing civilians, that will cost tax
payer money, and they're not even the best deterrent. There's
just defense contractors that make them and a country that
wants them, and so we're willing to accommodate that death.
And unfortunately my prediction ended up being accurate, up losing

(45:00):
that amendment. Cluster bombs are still being sent and now
they're tragically killing people. Joining us now is the editor
at anti war dot Com and the host of anti
War News, Dave to Camp. So explain to my audience
why in the world the United States is still sending
cluster munitions to Europe.

Speaker 12 (45:19):
Well, this is something that happened under President Biden back
in twenty twenty three. To support the proxy war in Ukraine,
the war with Russia. He started sending the cluster bombs
to make up for the shortages in the one hundred
and fifty five millimeters artillery shells because Russia was outgunning
Ukraine at a very high level. In some battles. Ukrainian

(45:42):
commanders said they were firing artillery at a ten to
one rate, Russia with you know, ten and Ukraine with one,
and so they started sending the cluster bomb version, you know,
which the US has a lot of in its stockpiles,
and old version of these artillery shells. And what cluster
to understand them, is essentially, it's a bomb. It's an

(46:02):
artillery shell that's packed with very small bombs, like little balls.
And these particular munitions that Biden started sending have seventy
two little bombs in them, and the New York Times
at the time actually did some good reporting on this.
There is a Pentagon policy starting in twenty seventeen that
the US should not use or transfer cluster bombs with

(46:24):
a one percent more than one percent dud rate, And
the dud rate refers to the fact that when they
fire the munitions and the small sub munitions scatter. You know,
the dud rate is the percentage of bombs that won't
explode initially. And what makes cluster bombs so hazardous to
civilians is that they leave behind little bombs that don't explode.

(46:46):
And according to the New York Times reporting at the time,
these shells that the US was sending Ukraine had a
fourteen percent dout rate, So that means that they leave
behind a lot of little, small bombs that little kids
can come across.

Speaker 10 (46:59):
This is the legacy of.

Speaker 1 (47:03):
David Does that mean that after the American taxpayer spends
all this money to send weapons to Ukraine, that we're
going to then have to go spend money to dmine
the cluster bombs that didn't initially detonate and might kill
some unsuspecting child.

Speaker 12 (47:21):
Oh yeah, that's going to be a huge cost in
this war because of all the cluster munitions that have
been used and also all of the land mines. Ukraine
recently withdrew from the Anti Personnel land Mine Treaty that
prohibited them from being used because they've been using them
across the front line. But this is the legacy of
the US bombing campaign in Vietnam and Cambodi and Laos.
To this day you see reports of children or farmers

(47:45):
coming across cluster bombs that were dropped by the US
back in the sixties and seventies that can still kill
in main people. So the latest from Ukraine is that
the Cluster Munition Monitor released a report that said since
the Russian invasion, there's been twelve civilian casualties, and that
includes killed and wounded as a result of cluster bombs.
And I think that's just really barely scratching the surface

(48:06):
because in the report they said that there's been reports
of cluster bomb casualties in Russia and in Russia controlled
parts of Ukraine that were not included in the toll,
and so we know Ukraine is firing them into those areas.
And this is something you know at the time, I remember,
I remember your opposition to it in Congress. Un Representative Green.

(48:26):
I believe there was an amendment to the NDAA to
try to prohibit the transfer, but I remember at the
time there was you know, there was evidence that Russia
was using cluster bombs in Ukraine. They denied it, but
there was evidence that that they were used, not super widespread,
but essentially Russia said, if you start sending these cluster bombs,
and we're going to start using them too. And so

(48:48):
since the US started sending them, you know, it's been
widespread use on both sides. And one thing that this.

Speaker 1 (48:55):
Report said, the feature of deterrence. Yeah, there's no feature
of deterrants that comes with leaving behind grenades essentially that
can explode on on unsuspecting civilians. And it seems like
the reports that we've been discussing indicate that it is
the civilian population that bears the brunt of this. I
only got a couple of seconds left, But does it

(49:16):
give you any hope that like elements of the far
right like myself and Congressman Green can align with like
the far left like Sarah Jacobs and Jim McGovern to
at least try to get reasonable guardrails in place on
these types of munitions.

Speaker 12 (49:31):
Yeah, it does, And I mean that's kind of what
we're all about at anti war dot com, where a
single issue project. And whenever you introduce those resolutions to
withdraw from Siria and Somalia, you know, we tried to
get our readers to call their congressmen to support these
these resolutions, and I think there really is hope, especially
now what we're seeing from Representative Green on Gaza. She's

(49:53):
really been speaking out about that.

Speaker 3 (49:54):
Yep.

Speaker 12 (49:55):
So it's always good to see.

Speaker 1 (49:59):
Yes, No, we hope for that type of coalition building,
and we'll have to chat about with you. Chatted about
it with you more when we've got a little more time.
Dave DeCamp read more on his incredible work at anti

Speaker 1 (52:37):
Ever, we have to talk about Brazil, and if you're
wondering why anything there matters to you at all, it does.
You are impacted significantly more by what's happening in Latin
America than you are by what's happening in the Black

(52:59):
Sea oceans away.

Speaker 3 (53:00):
Here's why.

Speaker 1 (53:01):
Brazil has over two hundred million people, just less than
half of the population of.

Speaker 3 (53:05):
The United States.

Speaker 1 (53:06):
Brazil has the largest army in South America, so if
things break bad there, we're going to feel a bad
impact in a variety of ways. Brazil exports key food
supplies to the global food chain. They're a member of Bricks,
which is literally set up to challenge the US dollar.
And Brazil has the largest economy in South America. It's

(53:26):
America's largest trading partner on the continent. That all sets
the backdrop for what's happening there, and it's very ugly.
The Supreme Court of Brazil has convicted former President Jayra
Bolsonaro of plotting a coup to overthrow the government he
was dislodged from power. Who dislodged him the former president
Lula de Silva, who himself is a former president who

(53:50):
spent time in jail.

Speaker 3 (53:51):
Here's the problem with the Bolsonnaro conviction.

Speaker 1 (53:53):
The man was literally at Disney World in the United States.

Speaker 3 (53:56):
When Brazilian authorities.

Speaker 1 (53:58):
Are saying he was some combination of Jack Bauer and
the QAnon shaman overthrowing. The Brazilian government are at least
trying to Jyra Bolsonaro wanted to run for president again.

Speaker 3 (54:08):
At times, he's looked like the person.

Speaker 1 (54:09):
Who would win if he were allowed to be a candidate.
The decision by the Supreme Court bars Bolsonaro from running
for public office or holding public office.

Speaker 3 (54:18):
Until at least twenty thirty.

Speaker 1 (54:20):
That's convenient for them because it keeps him off the
ballot in the next presidential election, but that seems like
small potatoes considering they've imposed a twenty seven year.

Speaker 3 (54:30):
Prison sentence on the former leader.

Speaker 1 (54:32):
He's currently under house arrest tracked by an ankle monitor.
President Trump called the conviction quote very surprising. He said
the Bolsonaro case is very similar to how the left
try to trip him up and bar him from being
able to run for office or hold office with the
misapplication of criminal law.

Speaker 3 (54:49):
He described the trial as a witch hunt.

Speaker 1 (54:51):
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed that the US
will respond accordingly to this witch hunt. He called the
Supreme Court justice who's led this razy disaster, Alexander de Morice,
a human rights abuser. Rubio denounced what he sees as
political prosecutions by Brazil's Supreme Court. On the political left,
they seem to be celebrating the jailing.

Speaker 3 (55:12):
Of a political opponent.

Speaker 1 (55:13):
House Democrat Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks led
a statement that called Bolsonaro a threat to democracy. It's
really something when they say that the people who would
win the elections are the threats to democracy.

Speaker 3 (55:25):
That may be what's happening here, and.

Speaker 1 (55:27):
It does seem eerily familiar to us on this program
because in America we saw the threats to democracy label
applied because the other side didn't like that true democracy
would return the political right to power. So in Brazil
we are seeing the largest country in South America, with
the biggest military and the most people falling apart.

Speaker 3 (55:50):
At the scenes. Joining us now is the host of
the Palo Figarreedo show, Pala Figureedo. So this is wild.

Speaker 1 (55:56):
They have convicted Bolsonaro, they have imposed this twenty seven
year prison sentence.

Speaker 3 (56:01):
How are the people in Brazil.

Speaker 13 (56:02):
Reacting, well, Matt, thanks for having me. The people in
Brazil obviously divided. The country is divided kind of like
within party lines. A big chunk of it is celebrating.
Bolsonara was almost unstoppable on the pollings, so he would
definitely and he might be our next president if the

(56:24):
election in twenty twenty six happens with him on the ballot.
So they're a big chunk of the country. The left
is super happy because they were able to stop Bolsonara.
The other half of the country, or the majority of
the country, i'd say, is devastated because Bolsonaro is more
than just a politician. He's the biggest political symbol the
country had on the right on its history. So it's

(56:47):
it's a very sad mood in the country and people
are hopeful that maybe some help will come from the
United States with more sanctions and more actions against the
people the Supreme Court responsible for silencing the right in
the country.

Speaker 1 (57:08):
Is there an opportunity for a reversal here, for some
appeal to some higher authority or is this it is
this the final say that Jayra Bolsnaro won't be able
to run again and will spend a good part of
the remainder of his life confined.

Speaker 13 (57:25):
So the problem is that Bolsonaro was not like Donald Trump.
He was not judged by a regular court. He was
judged by the Supreme Court of the country, which is
a big country controversy itself, because the Constitution of Brazil
says the president can only be tried by the Supreme Court.
But Bolsonaro has not been the president for a long time.

(57:48):
He left office in January first, twenty twenty three. So
one of the justice even said, look, this is this
should be nullified, this should be new because we're not
the right court to try this individual. Well, but what
happened was that the Supreme Court convicted him, so there's

(58:09):
no one to appeal. The only hope now relies on
Congress to pass amnesty bill, which would be like a
congressional pardon.

Speaker 1 (58:22):
And is there a political makeup right now that would
be permissive of that in Brazil.

Speaker 13 (58:28):
And that's a great question because it's under discussion. The
amnesty would not cover present bolsnow alone, but thousands of
individuals persecuted, including myself in Brazil, and this is and
people arrested after the Brazil January eighth, which is strikingly
similar to the United States. January six people storm public

(58:52):
buildings in the Capitol when they thought the election was stolen.
That actually happened in Brazil a year after the what
happened in the United States almost a year and a
half a year after. So the pardoner would be a
broader pardon. And Congress is supposed to start sharps discussions
in the next couple of weeks, maybe this week. It

(59:13):
looks like there's enough folks to pass the bill. But
what would be the equivalent of the speaker in Brazil.
You know a thing or two about speakers blocking subject
star of interests off Congress. The speaker right now is
holding the bill not to be voted. Congress is trying
to push and push and push, and we might have

(59:34):
and I think sometimes Brazil imitates the United States so
much that we might have to remove the speaker from
the position and call for a new election.

Speaker 1 (59:44):
Well speak, That is something I have a little bit
of expertise with. If you need a little tutorial on
motions to vacate the speaker of the House, I have
a plane ticket and will travel. Pala Figuredo, host of
the Pala Fagaredo show really an expert on what's going on.

Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
In Brazil and throughout Latin America.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
