Burkey in the saddle. We've got all kinds of things
going on. We have got some great ballgames and an
amazing finish, probably the finish of the year, on a
hail Mary touchdown pass on the final play off regulation
that's coming up. You have a detailed report on that one.
We've got some finals. We've got a lot to get
to tonight, so we're gonna start out just giving me

you the finals that we do have. East Kentwo improved
to two and zero, beating Byron Center tonight forty three
to fourteen. West Catholic evens a slate at one apiece
after they shut out Coopersville thirty four to nothing. Just
completed our ninety six to one game of the week.
Jennison beat four Shills Northern twenty three to seven. How
about our one oh seven mus game of the week
Rockford Muskegan. Muskegan led Rockford twenty to three at the half,

and Rockford comes back and scores twenty seven unanswered in
the second half to go up thirty to twenty. Moskegan
does get a touchdown make it twenty six, but Rockford
holds them off and wins it thirty to twenty six.
Rams Rockford one and one on the air, Muskegan falls
to oh and two. The Zealand West out of a game.

We're going to a full deal detail report. That's the
amazing finish and Zealand West with an a miracle finish
and wins it tonight twenty eight to twenty four. All right,

Forest Hills Eastern moved to two and oh beating Greenville
tonight forty two to fourteen. Oakridge over Montague fifteen to seven.

was our Lake Shore Spotlight game of the week. Thrown
Up a Kellogg beat Hamilton to Night in a really
good ballgame. Thorn Up with KELG twenty eight Hamilton twenty seven.
Bona Shores got its first win of the year beating
River Rouge sixteen to six. East Grand Rapids got its
first win also as they blank South Christian Knight twenty
one to nothing. Both teams one and one on the

Young Season Unity Christian States perfect through two as the
Crusaders beat Schoolcraft to Night forty to nineteen, Read City
Overbulding twenty four to nothing, and Kent City beat Godwin
Tonight sixteen to six. All right, we've got a lot

a one to oer record into East Lansing tonight to
take on the Trojans. Are Scott Moore there, He's going

the Eagles fare well?

The Eagles fared very very well, Rick as they are
now two to zero on the season after a big
thirty seven to six whitewashing of East Lansing. Reporting from
East Lansing High School. This is Service Professor Game reporter
Scott Moore with a Meyer postgame show summary. This report
presented by Service Professor Keating, Cooling, Plumbing, and Electrical. They'll

fix it in a snap. Right off the bat, East
Lansing got the ball first and they were forced to
punt from deep in their own territory, and that led
to our Healthcare Associates play of the game. Hudsonville got
great push into the East Lansing line and block the punt.
Will Zeiderween from Hudsonville bought it on one hop and

(04:03):
went eighteen yards to the right pylon. John Tillotson added
the extra point and Hudsonville was off and running. Next
time that they had their ball their first offensive possession,
the Eagles engineered an eight play fifty one yard drive,
with Parks Budevine slashing up the middle for the final
eleven yards. The pat once again was good. It was

fourteen to nothing in favor of the Eagles, but the
Trojans struck back late in the first quarter. It was
a broken play that turned into a rollout to the
right for quarterback Anthony Green. He chucked it downfield and
hit nevi On yarbro In stride down the right sideline
eighty eight total yards. The pat, though was no good.

The Trojans had their first points of the season after
being shut out at Ported Central forty five nothing last week.
In the second quarter, East Lansing got bad field position
had to punt from their their own end zone. The
punt was returned to the East Lansing twenty by Hudsonville's
Braylan Miller. Four plays later, Owen Harsma went in from

three yards away. The pat was no good, but the
six points did go on the scoreboard, and just before halftime,
Harisma struck again, punching it in from the four yard line.
This time the pat was good. At halftime it was
twenty seven to six Hudsonville. Hudsonville rounded out the scoring

in the second half a couple of long drives ten
plays four minutes and fifty seconds leading to a thirty
five yard John Tillotson field goal made it thirty to
six in favor of Hudsonville. And then late in the game,
Wyatt van Assen scored on a two yard plunge for
the touchdown with seven thirty one to go. It was

nine plays, seventy yards, thirty seven to six Hudsonville, and
that was the final score.

That is four five touchdowns by four different Hudsonville players. Hudsonville,
as I mentioned, now two and zero on the season.
East Lansing falls to and two, hard landing for a
team that made it to the state semifinal in Division

to face Caledonia as the Eagles start a run of
seven consecutive OK Red games. Meanwhile, East Lansing heads across
the Capital city to open their CAAC Blue play at

On their first possession, quarterback Cade Kaufman to Owen van

Second possession, Kde Kaufman a twenty two yard touchdown pass
to Steph Jones, and it made it fourteen to nothing

EK with three thirteen left in the first half, And
late in the second quarter a third Kaufman TD pass,
this time a seven yarder to Davian Needleman, and the
halftime score was EK twenty one and Byron Center seven.

Phillips running in a five yard TD after BC quarterback
Easton Vikers had hit Will Bambach with a forty yard
TD pass to open the third quarter, so it was
now twenty eight to seven in favor of e K.
Then late in the third quarter, DC bobbled a snap
on a punt EK recovered at the BC twenty eight. Now,

Sir Williams punched it in from two yards out to
make an EK thirty five and BC seven at the
end of the third. The fourth quarter saw the two
teams trade touchdowns, campaign scoring from two yards out on
a QB keeper for the Bulldogs, a Sir Williams crashing
over from two yards out for East Catwood. In our

a Kate Kaffin twenty two yard TV passed to Steph
Jones with three point thirteen left in the first quarter
to put EK up fourteen to nothing, establishing the offensive

half comeback and then held off Muskegan to win in
our ninety or a one oh seven game of the week,
Rockford thirty, Muskegan twenty six, Traverick City West beat grand
Haven to Night thirty two to fourteen, West Ottawa and
Zealand West. What a battle this one. We got it
right down to a miracle finish. We're gonna have a

still catching my breath as here tonight. It was Zealand
West quarterback Drew Albrecht completing a thirty seven yard hail
Mary touchdown pass to Brandon Holman on the final play

of the game as Zeeland West beat West Autawa twenty
eight twenty four in another early nominee for Game of
the Year. Neither team was able to get anything going
in the first quarter, but Zealand Less finally got the
first points on the board about three minutes into the
second quarter when Joana Leslie bowled his way into the
anzel from four yards out. Holman converted the two point
conversion round to make it eight zero ducks. We's Autawa,

first three possessions, figured things out in the next drive

pass on his first possession of the second half, with

yard TD pass really in the third quarter, but the
Panthers stuffed the conversion attempt, leaving them with a fifteen
to fourteen edge. We Satawa got the twenty five yard

totch from Quentin Edwards in a twenty one yard run
to Montgomery to move down to the two yard line
on his next possession, but the Zealand must defense stood
tall on four straight plays to keep the Panthers out
of the end zone. All Bret capped off Zeale Musks

Patrick to give the Ducks back to the lead at

to go, Homan appeared to make a phenomenal sideline touch
on fourth and fourteen to seal the game, but he

moved the ball down to the Duck's fourteen yard line.
Panthers senior Connor Valk just knuck a thirty one yard
field goal inside the right upright to give We's Auto
a twenty four to twenty two leave of forty eight
seconds left. It looked like they had to win, but
that set up the final Zealand West drive. Wearing our
Healthcare Associates Play of the game all Breck was flushed

from the pocket, rolled left and threw up a prayer
with one second left that was tipped by three West
Audawa defenders at the five yard line right into the
waiting hands of Brandon Homan for a thirty seven yard
TV catch with no time left on the clock, giving
Zealand lust to twenty eight to twenty four win. Anaya
was thirteen to twenty four for one hundred and seventy
two yards in the one touchdown pass al Breck was

fixing the snap in the Lake Shore Spotlight Game of
the week feeded Montague fifteen to seven in a hard
fought game as the Eagles improved a two and oh

on the young season, including two and oh in the
West Michigan Conference Lakes Division. Montague slips to oh to
two overall ohen to one in the WC Lakes. Defense
ruled today for the most part, with a few big
plays sprinkled in there after. Nearly twenty two minutes of
scoreless football. Okres got on the board first when senior
quarterback Logan Houston connected with Speeders speedy sophomore Tremaine Stevenson

on a seventy seven yard touchdown pass. Houston hit Presston
six on a two point conversion pass to make it
eight to nothing Oakridge with two oh five left in
the first half. The score remained that way until two
forty four was left in the third quarter, when Oakre's
senior Jayden Daily got a counterplay untouched around right end
for a ten yard scoring run. Cianna Eckers pat gave
the Eagles a fifteen year old lead. Montague was not done, however,

after a sixty seven yard kickoff return by junior Cole Moss,
junior Devlin Dean sprung free for a twenty one yard
touchdown run. Jordah Hunderson made the pat to pull the
Wildcats win in fifteen to seven. That was it for
the scoring, however, as Okredge moved the ball to end
the game, but took any at the Montagu twenty five
Okres outgain Montau two hundred and seventy to one oh five.
The Eagles were Banffs. Offensively, rushing for one hundred and

fifty seven yards and passing for one thirteen. The Wildcats
were limited to thirty eight rushing yards. Houston finished four
or seven passing for one hundred and thirteen yards for Oakridge.
Daily led the Eagles on the ground with sixty eight yards. Defensively,
Houston six and Parker Williams pace Okres with five tackles
a piece. For Montague, Fletcher Thoemen led the way with

break to scoreless tie late in the first half. The

Professor electrifying play of the night to choose and why
we went back and forth all night. There's some good candidates.
Hudsonville had a block punt, scoop and score for a touchdown,
and we thought, we thought that West Ottawa's Connor Valk
was gonna win it the award with a thirty one

yard field goal with just forty eight seconds left, and
it looked like that was going to give West Ottawa
the win, and that back and forth affair in Zealand,
but Zealand West, as we heard just a little while
ago from Lucas, Zealand West, Drew Albrecht threw up a
hail mary pass that was deflected at the five yard
line by three West Ottawa defenders and tipped back into

the end zone where it was grabbed by Brandon Holman
in the end zone for the touchdown. As time ran out.
The thirty seven yard touchdown gave the win to Zealand
West and the dramatic finish of that one final score
was Zealand West twenty eight and West Oudawa twenty four.

then and there and named that one play right there

coaching staff, you know, gets on the on the whiteboard
and it's assignment football and able to really key on
on their assignments. Did a great job in the second

A coaching standpoint, Brent, what's your focus when you're walking
into the locker room. You guys are down seventeen at halftime.
You guys are not down seventeen. You know, you probably
count on two fingers how many times you've been seventeen
since you took over the program. What are your thoughts
as you're walking into that locker room, and what did
you say, Well, that our.

Guys need to be ready to listen to their coaches,
understand there has to be a mindset shift, and understand
that there's going to be some adjustments and an extreme
intense desire to take that coaching and to make the
necessary adjustments, just in terms of paying attention to locking in.
And you looked at the eyes of our kids and

how they responded that coaching was impressive and so proud
of them for just taking that and learning from it,
and they did a great job with it.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
You don't come from behind like that much and to
come back and win a game, especially on the road,
coach too often, but without having a number of players
step up. Can you maybe think right now of one
or two key plays in that second half that turned
the tide for the Rams.

Speaker 9 (29:38):
Well, defensively, we started to really focus in. I mean
with that offense, right that's assignment football. And I thought
in terms of just all eleven locking in on their assignment,
I don't think we can really point out one guy
right now on the defensive side, but you could see
that collectively on the defense side of the ball, they
bought into their one eleventh and were able to make

some key stops. Want to stay on the offensive side,
we were able to rely a little bit on the
run game there at the end. We had some receivers
that you know, ran some great routes and made some
big catches. But I was proud of our offensive line
for playing with great technique and secure in their blocks.
And we had a back in Luca Hearn who stepped

up big time a two way player for us and
ran the ball really hard.

Our main message to our kids is you got to
you gotta work on growing every single day and taking
it one day at a time, and then and then
you start to break it down each game, one play

to continue to work with these kids and couldn't be

other side of the state, an amazing finish. West out
of Zealand West went back and forth throughout the night.

you had to do some things right to get down
there to throw that ball down there. What happened before

Our guys made a couple of real nice plays. You know,
we're running offense. We don't throw the ball a whole lot,
and that that got us out of our assistant. We
had to put the ball in the air. Nico made
a nice catch, got out of bounds with one second
to go, and then we were able to throw the
long pass over the top, got tipped and Brandon happened
to be in the right spot and made a play

That that's you know, that's the that's the play. Probably
a lot of folks are gonna forget because if he
doesn't do that for you, you don't get a chance
for that pass right exactly.

make it a nice short route, get the ball and
just go right out of bounds. So we get a
few yards here and then we got a chance at
the end zone.

Coach I know you've been asked this too many times,
but I have to ask it. You follow a legend
in John Shilite who retired last year and he goes
not and he retires after an amazing career, he goes
off out on top with the state champions of Zealand West.
What what what was it like following a guy with
that kind of success.

It's not an easy task, that's for sure. You know.
The one nice thing at Zeeland West our coaching staff
stayed intact. All the guys that were with us last
year stuck around in our coaching again this year. So
having that continuity of familiarity. Greg Holgan started to stay
down as a defensive coordinator. He does a tremendous job
of getting the game plan ready to go. One of

(35:37):
the smartest guys I know. But just having that continuity,
and we talked as a staff of trying to replace
John shilto a Hall of fame coach. One guy can't
do that, but we as a group need to do
it collectively.

Speaker 1 (35:50):
Tell us about some of your assistants that have stepped up,
because I'm sure when that when that transition happed with
are you moving up? Other coaches had to move up
as well as far from a coaching ranks.

Speaker 6 (36:01):
Yeah, so like last year, I was a head JV
coach and then I worked with the offensive line with
the varsity guys with John for the last five years.
John slowdox are running back coach, does a tremendous job.
Nate mandagooch coaches our linebackers, and those guys have all
been on the varsity for the last several years. Kyle
Cooper took last year off for a defensive line in

his back. Coach Smith probably is the oldest coach that
we have, but is connects with our guys in a
special way and is a tremendous asset to have. He
was with us last year. And then we have some
young coaches at the lower level, and those guys are
you know, two or three years of coaching experience. And
Ryan Van Norton does a great job. He's got a

(36:42):
few more years than those other guys. But it's nice
because we have some coaches at the lower levels that
played for us that want to get into teaching, want
to get into coaching and are going to college right now,
but come back and coach for us as well.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
All right, coach next week. You still stay in non
league because three more three games just non conference. You
play Whitehall next year. I don't remember Zealand West playing
Whitehall before. I don't know if that's happened to you.

Speaker 6 (37:07):
We played them last year. You have to be a
shootout up in Whitehall. And they had they had a
very good quarterback and Cam I forget his last name.
He's down at Western right now playing some basketball. And
then they had some all state wrestlers that were guys
on the edge that really caused.
