GlenBrooke's voice carries you through emotional landscapes with the authenticity of someone who's lived the stories she tells. In this captivating conversation, we explore the musical journey of an artist finding her unique path between Michigan's vibrant music scene and Nashville's recording studios.

Growing up surrounded by music—with her father leading a local band and family members playing various instruments—Glenn's destiny seemed written in guitar strings from the start. She shares how playing her first song at seven (Dixie Chicks' "Take Me Away") led to high school performances and eventually finding her voice as a songwriter in her early twenties. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who refuses to be boxed in by genre constraints, preferring to describe her sound as "American roots" rather than simply country rock.

The Michigan music community played a crucial role in shaping Glenbrooke's artistic identity. Unlike Nashville's saturated market, Michigan offered her space to develop a distinctive style influenced by legends like Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, and James Taylor (her father's favorites) alongside contemporary artists like Miranda Lambert and Stephen Wilson Jr. This blend of influences created the soulful, powerful vocals and emotionally honest songwriting that defines her music today.

Glenbrooke's creative process typically begins with lyrics, though she's been experimenting more with melody-first approaches lately. What resonates most is her perspective on vulnerability—she believes that if you stop getting nervous before performances, you should stop making music altogether. This philosophy shines through in songs like "Moving On," which explores the emotional complexity of relationship transitions with striking imagery and beautiful instrumentation, including a standout mandolin part recorded at Nashville's Southlight Sound.

Follow GlenBrooke on all social media platforms under "GlenBrooke" or "Glen Brooke Music" to hear her latest releases and join her on this authentic musical journey that bridges traditional influences with a fresh, contemporary sound. Her voice and stories will stay with you long after the last note fades.

How about we play a littleicebreaker game to get to know
each other before we move on?
You ready?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Let's do this.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
What was the first album you ever bought?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Oh, the first album I ever bought.
Oh my gosh, you're taking meback when I was like really
little.
It probably was like NSYNC orBritney Spears or something wild
.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Is there a song you wish you had wrote?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, I'm a song by Stephen Wilson Jr.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Oh, I absolutely love him.
He's amazing.
Do you have a dream venue thatyou want to play?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
The Red Rocks and then probably Pine Knob, which
is a spot here in Michigan.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
And if you weren't a musician, what would you be?

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Um, I mean, I was a stay-at-home mom for a while so
I mean I probably I kicked buttat that, but it would have to be
something that is people-y,because I love people.
So I'm not really sure.
I mean it's probably sales.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yeah.
And last question this is goingto be the hardest question I
ask all day If you had onecountry song To request for the
rest of your life.
And last question this is goingto be the hardest question I
ask all day If you had onecountry song to request for the
rest of your life.
That's the only song you couldrequest at weddings, parties,
radio, whatever.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
What country song are you requesting?
Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Oh, this isn't fair.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Mine would be Travis Tritt Great Day to Be Alive.
Oh, that's a wonderful song.
You know what I would have tosay, brooks and Dunn Neon Moon.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Oh, I love me some Brooks and Dunn.
Actually, let's go ahead andplay some Brooks and Dunn,
requested by today's CountryClimb Star of the Week, glenn
Brooke.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, we're talkingto Glenn Brooke, today's
Country Climb Star of the Week, and we had a little fun with our
icebreaker game.
Now let's get to the nittygritty and find out who is

(02:47):
Glenbrook.
How did you get started inmusic?
Tell us a little about yourjourney.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
I grew up in a musical family.
My dad was the lead singer andlead guitarist of a band here in
my hometown and I grew up withthat around me, along with my
brothers playing either drums orguitar or singing.
My aunt played the drums.
Everybody kind of dabbled in it, so I was always around it and

(03:16):
so, growing up I think I wasabout seven when I decided to
pick it up the first song I everlearned was Dixie Chicks' Take
Me Away up.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
The first song I ever learned was Dixie Chicks Take
Me Away.
I love that song and that justwent through your whole youth.
When did you start playingshows and writing your own music
?

Speaker 3 (03:36):
I started performing out in high school.
I had a teacher that was pretty.
He influenced me a lot to getmyself out there and so he was
performing out and if he did,he'd let me come and play a song
or two, and that's kind of howI got my feet wet.
And in high school is when Istarted writing as well, and it

(03:56):
kind of just snowballed intoabout 19 or 20 when I really
wrote my first song that Ithought was cool and recorded
that in my early 20s.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
And then was there a specific moment when you
realized that this is what youwant to do with your life Music,
was it?

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah, I think I realized early on, probably in
high school, when I was likethis is going to be it, because
you know those tests that theymake.
Probably in high school, when Iwas like this is going to be it
, because you know those teststhat they make you take in high
school, where they're like fillout all the answers, they'll
tell you what you are going tobe.
Well, every time I'd fill themout, it would always come back
and tell me I was going to be ateacher and I'm like absolutely
not.
Like that sounds horrific, Ican't do that.

(04:41):
So I would go back in becauseI'm like no, I want to be a
singer.
So I would change it all out sothat it would always answer
that I was going to be that, ora radio host or something.
So I think that's when I knewand you live in Michigan.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
You travel to Nashville a lot.
What's the Michigan music scenelike and has that shaped you in
the type of music you do?

Speaker 3 (05:09):
It's definitely shaped me in a lot of different
ways.
We've got a big community uphere.
You know Nashville's saturated, but Michigan has a lot of
awesome talent, very versatile, very different, very versatile,
very different.
And being within thosecommunities it's kind of helped

(05:30):
me find myself and not so muchalways feeling like you have to
be like the next or the artistthat's already there.
You know it's okay yourself andown it.
And these communities up hereare very much that they're
finding their own lane.
They found their own lane, theyare their own person and and
we're all kind of just rockingit out.
That way it's, it's.
It's awesome.
I'm very, very proud.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
What's your favorite part about being a singer and a
songwriter and a performer?

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Touching people on so many different levels.
I, I, absolutely I enjoywriting music.
That is true to me.
It's absolutely a song, it'ssomething that probably happened
in my life that I wrote about, and the older I get, the more

(06:20):
storytellish they become.
I was just watching adocuseries on Billy Joel and
they were trying to figure outhis album at one point and he's
like all over the place in thesedifferent genres, if you will,
and I'm like I feel like that'sa lot of me.
I feel like I fall everywheresometimes, but it always seems
to kind of cohesively come backinto one unit.

(06:41):
But yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
And I've seen your style described as country soul
with the rock and roll edge.
What does that mean to you andwhat artists have maybe helped
inspire that?

Speaker 3 (06:54):
You know, I stopped describing myself as country
rock because I feel that I fallmore into an American roots.
I fall more into an Americanroots and I say that because,
like inspo wise, you know, Igrew up on Stevie Nicks and Tom

(07:17):
Petty and the Eagles and JamesTaylor, and I grew up on all
these influences that my dadlistened to.
But then I myself fell in lovewith Miranda Lambert and
nowadays I'm obsessed withCassie Ashton and Jackson Dean,
stephen Wilson Jr, brian Martin.
I love male vocals.

(07:37):
I'm hardcore.
I feel like I'm low where Ijust kind of hang out there.
Normally, when I play out, people are like can you play
Shania Twain or something.
It's like, yes, I can, I canlower it to do it, but I'd
rather play a male song.
But there's just so manyinfluences that I feel like I'm
kind of creating my own niche.

(07:57):
I don't know if it's countryrock, it feels that way
sometimes, but I like to call itAmerican roots.
Now.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Well, it is amazing.
Make sure everyone check outtoday's Country Climb Star of
the Week, Glenn Brooke.
We're going to be playing someof her music coming up next, but
first we have a fun gameplanned.
We'll be right back on QCountry 92.5.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
I love that new Jackson Dean song Heaven to
Betsy.
I play that.
It's one of my favorites.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Oh gosh, I would love to see that.
Do you have that on socialmedia?
Have you seen it yet?

Speaker 3 (08:33):
I do, I do have it on social media.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
It is now time for musician questions with a
musician, today's Country ClimbStar of the Week, glenn Brooke,
visiting us from Michigan.
All right, here's somequestions for you.
What's your songwriting process?
Do you come up with the lyricsfirst or the melody?

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Okay, a majority of the time it is lyrics, but
lately I feel like I've beengetting a lot more experimental
with my uh, the melody that I'mcreating on the guitar.
So it's been chords first, butmostly it's lyrics first.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
And do you?
Do you hear the music in yourhead Like when you're out and
about and then you sit down atthe guitar?
Or do you sit down at theguitar and you just start like
playing and see what comes?

Speaker 3 (09:25):
out, it's from scratch, yeah what's the most
useful advice another artist hasgiven you um, I once was told
that if I ever stopped gettingnervous and music, that I should
stop.
And, um, I think that's true, because to some degree, you

(09:47):
should always feel avulnerability to what you're
doing.
Um, I think it brings so muchmore.
Um, I don't know what the wordis, I don't know, I, I, I just
totally agree with that.
I feel like you are lacking, lacking something.

(10:08):
When you lose that, you know, Idon't know how to describe it,
it's like, ah, I can't eventhink of the word right now, uh,
but yeah, it's just moregratifying, I think, if you are
keeping that vulnerability andfeeling nervous.
I mean, like I get nervousbefore every show, sometimes
more than others, depending onhow big, but yeah, Well, what's

(10:29):
your pre-show ritual?

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Anything weird or wonderful?

Speaker 3 (10:33):
you do.
My band and I always do a coollittle chant together.
I can't completely share ithere because there's swearing
involved, but we do a prettycool chant and it always gets us
amped up and we used to orsometimes we'll say, like a cool
prayer, Warm up wise earlier inthe day.

(10:56):
I'll always like play through afew songs and just kind of get
myself warmed up and maybe havesome tea.
But that's about it.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
And last question if you could co-write a song with
someone, who would it be?

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Stephen Wilson.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Jr Heck.
Yes, there we go.
That was musician questions.
For a musician, today's CountryClimb Star of the Week guest,
glenn Brooke.
We are going to be back withher and play one of her latest
songs here on Q Country 92.5.
We are back with our bestfriend, glenn Brooke, today's

(11:31):
Country Climb Star of the Week.
You have a great song thatyou're going to let us play here
on Q Country 92.5 in Show LowArizona.
It's called Moving On.
Tell us a little bit about thissong, how it was inspired and
what it means to you.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Moving On is based off of.
I was going through a hard timein some relationships.
I was coming out of a divorceand I was seeing someone and I
was going through just thiswhole process of like finding
myself and and grieving and kindof shedding an old relationship

(12:09):
and trying to get into a newone and I kind of felt like it
was best.
But you know, when you meetsomebody, you know you have like
that special song.
You know, maybe you're out at abar and you hear a song
together.
You're like that's our song oryou know whatever, and or it's
your wedding song or whatever.
But I feel like in relationshipsif you hit turmoil, sometimes

(12:32):
you feel like you could go backto that song and maybe it'll,
you know, make a spark again andhelp you guys get back.
Or maybe you don't and you havea new song and that's just
called moving on and you justyou know you kind of just gotta
shed it and move on and find anew song.
So I it's very difficult for meto just describe, um, I kind of

(12:53):
leave it up to the listenersand make your own assumption and
opinion and maybe I'll hit homefor you in a different way.
But that's kind of where mymindset was right.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Well, I'm excited to play it for our listeners here
at the Q Country Nation.
Here's a song from today'sCountry Climb Star of the Week,
Glenn Brooke, with her songMoving On.

Speaker 4 (13:22):
He said I'm moving along, heading out the door Now
I'm waiting, like the song wassung About a boy and a girl
meeting for a drink.
I said you're moving on.
Did you even give it time Tohear a whine in the car with a
song about A boy and a girl in abar?
But you can't go back, can'tfence time.

(13:44):
But if I had the chance to playthe song one last time about a
boy and a girl, it would Justone last time to live our lives
Getting out of the living.
There's nowhere to spin it backto that day when we first heard

(14:11):
it.
It's a new kind of song when webelong and we're moving on like
a boy and that girl in themworking wall and stone.
We're moving on guitar solo.

(14:38):
He said it's been too longstanding in the rain and that
peppered hair's like the boy andthe girl Still caught up,
caught up in their days.
I said you'd given up.
Like the Chevy truck you didn'tlook like the boy and the girl.
We should go and get our stuff.
But you can't go back, can'tfix time.

(15:00):
But if I had the chance to playthat song one last time Bottle
boy in the mud he made it workJust one last time.
We'll live our lives Headingout of the mirror.
There's nowhere to Spin it backto that day when we first heard

(15:27):
it.
It's a new kind of song we'reable to own and we're moving on
Like a boy and a girl.
We'll never again walk thisroad.
We're moving on, we're movingon, moving on.

(16:03):
Just roll us out, live ourlives In and out of the lyric.
There's nowhere to Spin it backto that day when we first heard
it.
New kind of song when we belong, and we're moving on Like a boy

(16:27):
and a girl In their Morgan Walland song.
We're moving on, whoa, movingon, whoa, moving on.
I said you're giving up.
Like a shiver truck you didn'tlove, like the boy and the girl

(16:50):
we should go and get in stuff.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
That was Glenn Brooke , today's Country Climb Star of
the Week, with her song MovingOn Woo.
That is beautiful and I love.
I don't know music very well, but near the end was it the
guitar that was playing, or thepicking, or what instrument was
that?
It was like a cool guitar soloor something.
Oh, there's a mandolin in.

(17:26):
There 's what it is.
Oh, my gosh, that is uh that'samazing.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
Where'd you record that at?
So we recorded that atsouthlight sound in nashville.
Leland grant and his team andsession workers were amazing.
They, they kicked butt.

Your voice is phenomenal.
You have so much soul and powerbehind your voice and your
lyrics are great.

You had to be writing some ofthe lyrics and you're like, ah,
that's good.
What's your favorite lyricyou've ever written?

Speaker 3 (23:58):
Oh, the favorite lyric I've ever written.
It just simply happened.
However, I wrote that shitwithin like 45 minutes.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
Oh nice.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
That song didn't take me long to write.
I think I was really on a fuelfire train there.
It was pretty wild.
But the favorite lyric I'vewritten recently is oh, what I
wouldn't give to hold you alittle longer, kid.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
That is a beautiful lyric.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Most favorite line.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Yeah, I have a daughter who's 17, well, 25 and
17 and the 17 year old startingher senior year of high school,
