Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hey, you're listening to the Ralph Emery Show with our
guest star Billy Walker, the Traveling Texan, the Tall Texan. Huh,
I don't have it right yet, the tall Traveling Texan.
I guess what was that introduction the mask singer whose
parents didn't want him to sing country songs or something
like that.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Uh, you know, supposed to be product or rich folks
and they didn't want their their child singing old country music.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
I I just wondered if when you were billed that way,
and if you missed that story, folks, you missed a
funny story. But Billy used to be billed as a
as a rich kid who was singing country music. I
wonder if a lot of people came up and tried
to borrow money from you.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
No, but I tell you, I like got killed a
couple of times. Ralph, you know I would uh. I.
What I would do is when I'd get into Dallas,
I would uh ride in on a bus from Waco.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
I was too poor to have a car at that
particular time. And then when I got the bus station,
I would take a cab to this sport of two,
remember the big d Jim Ree whatever you call it.
And in the meantime, before I got to the auditorium,
I was to put the mask on. And you know,
like a couple of times, these cab drivers would call
the cops. Man like, he said, help, I'm being robbed,

(01:14):
and I'd try to tell him all the time, Hey,
I'm you know, I'm the traveling text and the mass
singer country songs on the Big d Jim Bree, I'm
calling the cops.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
And you'd put the mask on in the cab.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, I wasn't supposed to get it to the auditorum
without the mask.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
I bet he thought you were about to whoop out
a gun.

Speaker 5 (01:31):
Hey.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
One time I worked the show with a nod boy
that was popular back there. His name was Art Davis,
who was a fiddle player, and so he hired me
to do.

Speaker 5 (01:39):
A bunch of shows with him.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
And we got out there and I walked into this
club with this mask on, and this this club operator
flips out this guns and he says, one more move
and I'll blow your head off. And it's got a
little bit shaky. I kept telling these guys, says, hurry
up and get me out of this thing. Are you
gonna get me killed. This is the only I knew

(02:01):
how the Lone Ranger felt.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
The only case I've ever heard of a country singer
being presented like a wrestler. Yeah, because they used that
same gimmick.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Yeah, but they would get to the wrestling arena before
they put it on.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Out of a new album, But Charlie Pride. Charlie borrows
a recent hit from Uh Whale and Jennings.

Speaker 5 (02:21):
And it's called good Hearted Woman.

Speaker 6 (02:26):
A long time forgotten odd dreams that just fell by
the way, have a good live fee promise.

Speaker 7 (02:38):
Ain't what she's living today.

Speaker 8 (02:45):
But she never complains all the bad times of bad
things he's done.

Speaker 6 (02:51):
Oh, she just talks about the good times they had.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
And all the good times.

Speaker 8 (03:04):
Cause she's a good hearted woman and love with the
good time and man.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
And she loves him.

Speaker 6 (03:15):
In spite of his ways that she don't understand.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Well.

Speaker 6 (03:23):
Now through tears, talks and laughter, they'll pass for this
spird hand in hand. Oh, she's a good party walmer, loving.

Speaker 7 (03:36):
Her cut timing mad.

Speaker 8 (03:42):
He likes tonight like Bride, likes in good time and friends.
And when the party is all over, she'll welcome him
back home again. Gord, No, she don't understand him, but

(04:04):
she does bad that she can.

Speaker 7 (04:10):
Oh, she's a good hearted Parma.

Speaker 8 (04:13):
She loves her good time and mad.

Speaker 7 (04:19):
Yes, she's a good hearted form.

Speaker 6 (04:22):
I'm in love with a good time and man.

Speaker 7 (04:29):
And she loves him in spite of it.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
We get ways that.

Speaker 7 (04:33):
She don't understand. If not through tears drops in the laughter.

Speaker 6 (04:41):
They'll patch to this, spurl hand in pad.

Speaker 7 (04:47):
Oh she's a good hearted farm. I'm loving her good
time in man. Yes, she's a good hearted all my
she loves a good time and.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Super. Charlie Charlie Pride on our show. You know the
song well as I do, probably better than I do.
Charlie is singing good hearted woman. Our guest star this
week is Billy Walker. They call you Bill.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
Well.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
At one time I used to go with Bill, but
when I started recording, they made it to Billy.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
I gotta ask you this, Okay, ask me about the
other Bill Walker. Isn't this confusing? Have people?

Speaker 7 (05:36):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (05:37):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Ask you?

Speaker 9 (05:38):
You know?

Speaker 1 (05:38):
The other Bill Walker directed the music for the Johnny
Cash Show.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
And well, and I live out there, not just the
stone's throw from Cash, out there in Hendersonville, and everybody
in Hendersonville says why does Johnny case say good night
to you every time he goes off there? And then
I have to go in this long story. Well, you know,
Bill Walker isn't a musical arranger, and he conducts his
orchestra and band and everything. And i'd do on this

(06:04):
long story, and everybody comes, you know, out on the road, says,
gee that Johnny Cashir does like he just plugs you
every time he says good night Bill Walker. And then
I have to go on this long story. It says, well,
now you know it's a different guy.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Were you ever billed as Bill Walker?

Speaker 3 (06:18):
No, not really, I've always really been Billy Walker.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Okay, somehow I can't I can't ask you. I can't
ask you about your Billy without thinking about the mask.
You get what?

Speaker 5 (06:29):
Hey, just play a record?

Speaker 1 (06:32):
You get what?

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (06:33):
I get mailed? We get each other's mail, you know.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Uh, somebody will write Bill Walker music roll and then
they'll send it to me thinking it's me, and then
I'll have to send it back to him. And then, uh,
he's gotten some of my checks in which he's had
to forward to me, and and I've gotten some of
his checks, but I had to forward to him.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
You guys, know about what each other's.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Well, you know what things you work and you know
you kind of if a big fat check comes up
from a recording company you're not affiliated with you, you know,
I'll check with him.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Billy, We're gonna play across the Brazis at Guaco. I understand.
I was told one time I was mispronouncing this. I
used to say, Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys,
and somebody from Texas said, you're not pronouncing it right.
It's Brasis.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Well yeah, they they slur it with a U down there,
like it's b r a z us instead of Os.
It's I've always called it the Brasis River.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
How far we're how far back we're going for this?

Speaker 3 (07:29):

Speaker 10 (08:22):
Why he said tom He glanced back over his shoulder.
The posse was nowhere in sight. He had sent for
Carmela to meet him on the banks of the Brassas tonight.
She was waiting, and he kept the promise he had

(08:45):
made such a long time ago. As he drunk the
guns that she hated and the bloody grasses below cross
the rasles said, Waco, right hard.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
I'm safe? Why said it?

Speaker 10 (09:19):
Then the night came alive with gunfire. He knew that
at last had been found. As the ranger spands shone brightly,
hell bandied old lay on the ground. Carmela knew he
was dyne, that all of her dreams.

Speaker 2 (09:41):

I have a riddle for our audience, Ralph. Oh Yeah,
what do a rich silver white cake and a chewy
Filbert nutcake, and a light Lady Baltimore cake and a
pretty pink checkerboard cake have in common? They're all made
from the same basic Betty Crocker recipe. That's right, the
same basic recipe. Because Betty Crocker basic recipes, like the

(10:43):
ones you often find in Gold Metal Flour, give you
more than just a set of directions. You'll find suggested variations,
helpful cooking hints, and time saving shortcuts. So go ahead,
add your favorite ingredients are put in your special flavors.

is what counts when you want to serve your best.
