m four four years ago on CBS, and then uh
uh Whaling and Johnny Cash had a fairly substantial recording.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
I would imagine they learned it from your record. Maybe
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Anyway, it's a tune called there Ain't No Good Chain Gang.
You may have heard Whaling and Johnny do it. Here's
the way Ed does it?

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Our guest star of the week here ed Bruce, And
there ain't no good chain gang. A lot of the
questions on today's show will be about Maverick, the television
series and a lot of us were shocked that Maverick,

(03:27):
though in NBC's Top ten, has been canceled. I'm sure
you were shocked. Well, I was a little bit surpressed.
Of course.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I knew that there had been some i say, arguments,
that had been a great deal of discussion. There were
going to be some changes that brought about for next year,
and what, I don't know what had the most to
do with it.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
I don't understand it when you.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Say changes, are you talking about in the production crew?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
From from? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
In the production, in the writing there were possibly gonna
be although nothing had been decided upon. Definitely some changes
in cast, but a great many changes and very significant
changes in production, in writing, some demotions, some resignations or firings,

(04:31):
and quite significant changes.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Y are you telling me that the cast and crew
of Maverick was not a happy group, Not at all.
I'm gonna take you off the hook and and relate that.
In the paper it said that James Garner had fired
or caused to have fired his executive producer.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Well, now I have I have heard.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Actually I think she said she was gonna quit, and
I think maybe Jim said, okay, fine. I don't think
he fired her. I don't think he forced her to resign.
He didn't try to talk her out of it when
in a fit of whatever she said, well, I'll just quit,
all right.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Let's look to a positive note. NBC did not own
Maverick was owned by Warner Brothers Television.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Correct, It's true.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
So it is possible then that Warner Brothers could turn
it around and sell it to ABC or CBS.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
They have the option to take it to either of
the other two networks.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
If they did that. Do you think Jim Garner would
be in it? Well, it wouldn't be Maverick with that
Jim Garne.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
That's true.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
That's you could be son of Maverick. No it' if
there is a Maverick, Jim will be in it. You
think that'll happen?

Speaker 3 (05:52):
I don't really.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
I can't give you any reason to feel this way back,
but I don't think it will happen, okay, And I
can't give you a anything upon which to base that opinion.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
At this point. Apparently many things are in limbo. Oh
well that is for sure, okay, Lacy Jay Dalton is next.

uh put myself int a situation. Uh Dad, he'd never
had a thirty nine and forward, but uh now, I

(18:22):
walked into CBS one afternoon, one Monday afternoon. This was
back when we had the Pickers baseball team. I don't
know if you remember that, I do. And uh Gene Ferguson,
who was over CBS at the time. I had a
lot to do with running and I'd gone in there
to see him about something relative to the Pickers baseball team.
And Billy Cheryl was sitting in the in the four

(18:45):
yer there the entrance for you. This is one of
the first songs, one of the few songs that I've
actually written for someone, you know, written on assignment. I
walked in and Billy's sitting there, and you know, high
ed and high Billy, how you doing good? And and
he says, if you got anything for tenure? And I didn't,

(19:05):
you know, just run off the top of my head
thinking about it, and I I couldn't come up with anything,
and I said, well, when is she cut and he
said tomorrow And this was Monday, UH about three o'clock
in the afternoon, and I said, well, thanks for the
fants barning And she was cutting at two o'clock the

(19:25):
next day. And I said, if I do come up
with something, what what do I do with it? And
he said, well, I'll be here about ten in the morning.
And I went home and I had the motor home
at the time and just locked in there with the
guitar and really didn't have the first fresh idea, no nothing.

(19:45):
I got in there with a guitar and just started
noodling around and and came up with the song. And
I don't remember what time it was. I came out,
I went into the house, I laid down, slept for
a couple hours, got up, and UH went in and
played for Billy, and about the second course through that
he was kind of singing along with it, and I'm, oh, well, shoot.

Speaker 1 (20:07):

Mama was no whole prood, but she was proper. Never
wore her addressed to you.

Sure she didn't care if you did, but she'd and
never digging a dream. Grandma cat did the best she could.

night with that traveling man.

Speaker 5 (22:11):
They bought gas at her hebus truck stopping rug to
Sula County.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
But he brought her home next day, a lady with
a ring a bone her hand.
