In this episode of the Royal Remnant Podcast, I explore the complex and often contentious issue of women’s rights in Islam. As an ex-Muslim from Tajikistan and now a follower of Christ, I’ve seen firsthand how deeply these issues affect women’s lives. I argue that Islam, both in its core teachings and historical context, is primarily designed for men and ultimately offers little long-term benefit for women.
I take a closer look at commonly cited teachings that are said to empower women, like spiritual equality, inheritance rights, financial independence, and access to education, and examine how they play out in real life. In practice, these rights often fall short of expectations.
I also shed light on the systemic challenges many Muslim women face: financial dependence, losing custody of their children after divorce, enduring polygamous marriages, experiencing domestic violence, and being treated unequally in legal matters. I share the contrast between the experiences of Muslim women in the West and those living under more conservative Muslim societies.
While I acknowledge that secular reforms and cultural shifts can help, true liberation is only possible through Jesus Christ. It’s in Him that I’ve found a vision for womanhood rooted in dignity, equality, and freedom.
