(00:01):
Every record tells a story. Independent labels.
I think a lot of interesting songs came out of that.
And every generation has a soundtrack.
The only hip you have in your body is made of titanium.
This is the final curriculum with Logan.
Apparently I don't know very much about anything.
Somebody calls her Tay Tay. Hey, it's Logan.
(00:23):
Just a quick heads up before we get into it.
This episode was originally recorded live on WLRA radio
where we are able to play all the songs that we talked about.
Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, we can't include
the music here on the podcast. So anytime you hear this sound,
that means we're skipping over asong that we originally played
(00:44):
on air. But don't worry, Jim's put
together a playlist with all thetracks from the episode.
So you can still follow along. Just check the link in the show
notes. All right, now on to the
episode. Welcome back to another episode
of the Vinyl Curriculum. Jim and I in the podcast studio
today. Jim, how we doing today?
(01:05):
Great first day back from a three day weekend, so yeah.
Did you have a good? I had a great time painting,
painting, painting, cleaning carpet and painting.
You know you that'll teach you karate.
If you paint up and down then you can.
I thought that was waxing a car.Well, that's that's part of it,
but part of it's painting the fence.
Remember that's. Long brush strokes.
(01:26):
That's one of those that I didn't see.
You didn't see The Karate Kid I?Think I've said this, seen bits
and pieces but. That should be episode or that
should be an episode in itself where I make you watch movies
and we do movie, we do movie reviews.
First, we're doing Bridesmaids because you still haven't
watched that one, although you did see the bathroom clip.
(01:48):
I did, I did. But this week we're not talking
about movies, we're talking about music.
And what is our topic this week?Early 90s dance music.
Yes, yes, it is. And Jim, let me tell you
something. You have no idea how excited I
am about this. This is my jam.
I figured, OK, this is my bread and butter.
(02:10):
My favorite concert that I ever went to was the Isle of 90s tour
when I worked at the radio station headlined by none other
than Vanilla Ice. So I have looked at the
connection. I've looked at the playlist.
I have been excited about it allweek.
I listen to it, which I normallydon't do because I'm
professional and I can just do things without preparing.
(02:33):
But I think we'd just get right into it.
No, I think, I think I want to compliment you though, because
you have never listened to the playlist before.
But after last week, where the roles were reversed and I, the
professional, showed you how, I listened to the playlist
probably three times, and then Iwas able to really understand
(02:55):
what you were playing and I was able to give really great,
honest answers without being, you know, too rude.
OK. So I appreciate you doing this,
Logan. Now, I know it's easy because
this is right up your wheelhouse, but yeah.
And then, well, you're, you're not wrong.
So this is the vinyl curriculum. So how this works is if you
haven't heard an episode before, well, Jim just mentioned we had
(03:18):
the 10th episode last week. You should go back and listen to
that. That was my playlist.
I got to pick all the songs and do the artwork for that episode,
which was just fantastic. But Jim has a playlist, early
90s dance music that we're goingto listen to throughout the show
today. After each song, I'm going to
give it a grade, an impartial grade.
And then at the end of the show,I will give the genre a grade as
(03:41):
a whole, and then Jim will grademy grading.
So we had like to have fun here.So Jim, what's the first song?
Let's pump up the jam 19/19/90 These are going to be in
chronological order. Technotronic.
Technotronic. Tronic.
OK. And that's one of the that's a
group. I would not know who that is if
(04:03):
you just said Technotronic or whatever, just like I I don't
think if you said what songs didthey sing, I wouldn't know.
They were, there was a couple ofsongs they sang.
They I think they were British. I think this was #2 went all the
way #2O. And it was widely considered the
first house song to break into US mainstream.
OK, interesting. Well, let's just take a listen
(04:26):
right away and then we'll give it an impartial grade unless you
you look like you have somethingelse you want to say.
OK. Turn it up, though.
Turn it up. All right, let's hear it.
Are you ready to pump up the jam?
Jam. Yes, that's well, who is that
(04:47):
Beyoncé who you said always saysthe same thing.
No, it's Rihanna. Rihanna still pretty good
though. I do like this song.
We're going to start off with an, A strong, a good start off
with. Here's the thing about dance
music. If it's going to be repetition,
yeah, it's going to have, it's going to repeat itself over and
(05:07):
over because you're on the dancefloor.
Right, You're pumping up on the dance floor.
What is that? Is that a specific dance move?
I don't know how that works. You're pumping up the jam.
I don't know. There's something about this one
and then the one we're going to do, like the fifth song for the
video. They didn't have the singer in
the video. They got like a model for lip
(05:28):
sync it and then the same thing happened with one we're going to
do later on. And I think it ended up being a
lawsuit. Like for some reason they didn't
have the look for the video and so yeah, they had lips.
Someone else act like they were singing it for the video.
I did not know that I did not watch the videos, I'd listen to
the playlist, but I know. Right.
(05:49):
Well, back then, no. Back then, that's what this was.
MTV was kicking. So this, this is, he still had
music on MTV at the time. So yeah.
So it's a good song, a lot of fun.
It's a solid start. Good solid start.
I don't think you've heard this next 1 though.
I have a few times, I have a story about this, but I think we
(06:12):
might as well just listen to it first because I don't know.
We'll listen to it first and then I'll tell my story.
But you want to tell us what what the name of the song is?
Vanilla ice ice ice baby. Vanilla Ice Ice Ice baby if
staple of the 90s from the I Heart 90s tour.
(06:33):
Let's take a listen. Let's see what it sounds like
here on that final curriculum. Yo VIP, let's kick round as the
body is jumping, I'm jumping. Danna's top tier music right
there, just so you're aware of that.
It was a huge hit, obviously. It was, it was a huge hit in the
(06:54):
90s. It was a huge hit in my
household. This was my dad's favorite song,
is my dad's favorite song of alltime.
So we had a we had the cassette when I was younger.
We listened to almost on repeat. This is my karaoke song.
Go to karaoke song. Mine's Wrecking Ball by Miley
Cyrus. OK.
(07:16):
Yeah, so I think we're going to make history with this song.
We're going to make history withVanilla Ice.
I know I haven't given you a lotof opportunity to give any of
the history of the song, but I don't care.
We're going to go a + a plus forVanilla Ice.
This is a new month and it's a new day.
(07:38):
I know that was that we have notnever given out an A+ in over
100 songs. That's a good one.
It was the first first rap song to make #1.
Really. Yeah.
Ever. Ever.
Wow, I did not know that. When you say first, it means
ever well. You know, that's really like the
first retirement tour. So do you know how you know you
(08:00):
know that's not from under pressure, That cook?
Well, no, it's well. You got sued.
Yes. And he claimed that he added an
extra beat to it, which there's a video I think I saw.
Done, done, done. That's under pressure.
Then ice, ice baby is done, done, done, done and.
Well guess what, he lost. They settled out of court, so
(08:24):
it's undisclosed amount, but they had to, he had to start
saying that that he had sampled it from them and gave them some
of the things and then he had topay money.
But so he lost that. But you know what?
If it didn't have that thing, itnever would have been a hit like
that. No, it's.
Probably worth it. It takes more than.
(08:48):
That we know about that when it comes to licensing on the
podcast. So you got to it's got to be
different. Love that song.
Now this next one. Remember how we had Madonna on
on her first album? The one where the debut albums
great initial album. So Fast forward, this was her.
(09:09):
I don't know what the name of the album was the song was.
Celebration No. No, that might have been like
her greatest hits. Oh yeah, this is Celebration.
That's the name. This says the name.
Deluxe version with the bonus track.
I didn't have that one then. This is vogue.
Yeah. And you said, do you listen to
(09:29):
the play that you did not know this?
Song I did not know. That's interesting.
I know. I know A lot of Madonna saw
this, didn't know this one. This.
Was #1 in 30 countries. Yeah.
Wow, really. Yeah.
And then it said it was inspiredby the Harlem ballroom voguing
scene. Vogue has a verb.
Video like you just have to watch the video because they're
(09:50):
voguing. What is voguing?
Like you, you make you do and you make these pauses where
you're in these positions. Almost like you just have to
while we're playing. What?
Had to Google it. I think I just need a visual
that's. What they say when they say
vogue, that's what they're talking about.
Come on, Vogue. And you stop.
And you pose and then you. Well, I'm getting a a beautiful
(10:13):
visual demonstration in the podcast studio right now, you
know. What we'll we'll find the video.
We'll put it on the show notes so people can watch the video.
How about we get you up on the desk and then we can I'll take a
video of you and we post that. I don't think we're going.
To do that one, but play the music, I think you're going to
like this all right. This is vogue on the vinyl
curriculum. Wow, Jim, I didn't know you
(10:44):
could interpret a dance like that.
That is impressive. Yes, I was inspired by the
music. Were you?
Yeah, that's that was voguing. Oh.
Yeah, I mean, I, I have to say, when I was at the dance, you
know, in the places in Mississippi, we weren't voguing,
but. Were you doing like the Foxtrot
or what were you guys doing? You just danced.
(11:09):
She just danced. But yeah, I love that song.
Yeah, it's pretty good. Not as good as Vanilla Ice, but
it's pretty good. I'll give it an A minus.
OK, that's respectable. Yeah, yeah, A minus Madonna.
Madonna. She's, you know, she's later on
she had her Ray of Light album, which was amazing.
And then she had that song musiclater on.
(11:32):
I mean, she just keeps going. And then, you know, now she's
little. She's got the grill on her
teeth. Have you seen it?
It's kind. Of yeah, it's it's.
Kind of a sad it's. Alarming, actually.
I don't get that. Is she still coming out with new
music? She's still touring, right?
I I don't know. I I don't.
I mean cuz she's how she's like 100.
How old is she, I? Don't.
She's older than, I don't know. Well, you're supposed to know
(11:54):
these things. I don't know how old Madonna is.
Let me look. I'll look while you're talking.
Well, I don't know. I feel like she.
She's 67. OK, well, she's not, she's old
enough to keep touring. I mean, she's not old enough,
you know, she's young enough to keep touring.
I should say rather she can keepgoing.
I'm. Sure she why not?
She's got enough money. She can go.
(12:15):
I mean, you know. I saw, you know, Cyndi Lauper is
doing her final tour. The first one, Year 2, Year 2,
OK. And she the other night in
California, she had Joni Mitchell and Cher join her own
stage. Wow, so that would have been a
great show. It's a great song though.
Vogue by Madonna, a minus here on the vinyl curriculum.
(12:38):
What's up next? Groove is in the heart.
Delight. This was a really fun album.
Again, the video kind of made it.
This lady had her name is Miss Kitty or something.
What? You'll have to you got to watch
the video. She's pretty funny.
She wears her go go boots and it's just very the boots.
You have on right now. Yeah, just like the ones I'm
(12:58):
wearing and you're wearing as well.
Well, it's very retro. It's so much fun.
Very hip. Hippie, hippie dippie.
So upbeat. It's a hippie dippie D light.
I don't know about DIPDPD light and it's D light DE E-LI TE is
delight. Is this the light version like
(13:18):
the free version? Is there a paid for version?
What? Like, it's the light.
You ever remember when you used to have to like, buy apps and
there'd be like a light version,like a free version.
It was like wasn't the full app.But it just they used the word
light when they assigned to. You.
Yeah, I don't remember that well.
This is the full version. I'm a grown man, I would just
(13:39):
buy my stuff. Now I was like 4 when I was
doing this. So illegally, OK, we no, no, it
was, it was legal. I'll have to tell you.
By the time that we got our son playing Minecraft and he was
banned from it, and each kid could lie, each kid could log
into our home computer with their own login, he somehow got
(14:04):
my daughter's. He was banned.
How did he get banned? Like he we would limit it on how
much she could play and so we were gone and he was supposed to
be on it. So he somehow got my older
daughters logged in, would download it, play it and then
throw it away down. And then one time we noticed
somehow he left the trail behindand we caught him and he got
(14:26):
busted. He was terrible with hiding his
like if he would sneak candy or whatever he would just.
Be like a rapper. Yeah, he would.
Just like, you know, he wasn't smart about it, which was good
for his parents. It was great because we always
caught him. I was what you call a perfect
child. I never broke the rules.
Oh, I was just, I, I had wore a Halo at all times actually.
(14:49):
I didn't know someone with a black hole where their heart is
had a Halo but OK, that's where my heart was supposed to be.
Anyway, I won't have your motheron the show 1 of the days
because I need some questions answered.
The groove. Actually was in where my heart
was supposed to be. The groove is in the heart here
on a vinyl curriculum listen. The groove is in my heart, Jim,
(15:23):
based on this song, Yeah. This is quality choices.
This. Week, this is your genre.
It is. It's just your genre.
It is. The thing about this Remember we
did funky 70s. Yep, yeah.
There's a guy named Bootsy Collins who was in Parliament
and he's what? Bootsy Collins And then he's on
(15:43):
that. He's on the video.
And the song? Jim just had me watch the video.
If you haven't seen the video, go to YouTube and look it up.
It's very interesting. A lot of psychedelic stuff
happening there. That you just heard that was #1
(16:04):
on the dance charts #4 on the regular charts.
Very popular visual effects and playful energy for a club
staple. It was very high on the Logan
charts, too. We're going to go another A
well, another A for D light. Whatever's next week is just
going to be. It's just going to be all F
minuses. We have never had an F, never
(16:24):
even had AD. No.
And you? I wanted to give you an F so bad
last week but I didn't. I didn't.
You can't. No, no, no, you can't.
You have to be impartial. I I've never said I was
impartial. I told you you're not impartial.
I'm just being honest about it. I don't like certain types of
music. There will be exceptions.
I'm not a huge rap person, but Ilike Ice Ice Baby.
(16:46):
There's some, I like some Post Malone songs so, but I'm coming
in not necessarily going to likeit.
I like the older rap. This is like the nineties. 2000s
rap is my kind of rap. The new rap, not so much.
Yeah, but this kind of stuff is top tier.
Just like this next song I'm excited about too.
(17:09):
Going to make you sweat. Yeah, yeah.
CC and C Music Factory, featuring Freedom Williams and
Martha Wash. Yeah, there's an interesting
story about that. We'll listen to it and then
let's talk about it. All right, this is vinyl
curriculum. I'm dancing right now.
(17:35):
I can tell you that. You sweating.
I am I I and I love that song. That's another that is another
top tier choice for the 90s dance episode of the vinyl
curriculum. You had me pull this video up
too that you're going to I thinkyou're going to talk about in a
second. But what is it with all these
(17:56):
90s videos? They're do they take place in
the same white void? They're just like in this white
space, like I don't know if the same thing with Can't Touch This
by MC Hammer, just some white void that goes on in forever in
all directions. And I I would really like to
know where that's at because they make some good music in the
white void. I'm sure it's just the studio,
(18:17):
right? And they're just faking it and
they have the you're the video guy.
Don't crush my hopes and dreams,Jim.
Don't crush. I want this to be a real place.
Now the lady that's in the videoagain is not the singer.
So the singer was this Martha Wash, and now it says that's who
(18:38):
it is. When they released it, they
didn't credit her. They didn't even have her on the
album. She got no credits.
How does that work? So she sued rightfully one and
one the Marsha Martha Wash. She was in 2 Tons of fun and the
weather. Girls, have you ever heard that
song It's raining in? Yeah, yeah.
(18:58):
She was a very large black womanand she and this other lady 2
tons of fun was their group. They were.
Backup singers I get. It with Sylvester and then she
did the weather girls and so again she didn't have the look
that MTV was needing, so they threw in somebody else and
didn't even credit her. So they, she won an undisclosed
amount of money. And then they started having,
like, when the video came up, they had to have a little
(19:19):
disclaimer that says Martha Walsh, you know, recorded that
song or something. Yeah, they have a very muscular
gentleman who's dancing around in the white void.
Yeah, in the video, maybe that's.
What we should call the podcast Just the White Just.
Two very muscular gentlemen. Yeah, that's us.
(19:41):
OK, A A for CNC Music factory. I'm gonna make you sweat.
Now, those first five songs wereall 1990.
That was 1 humdinger of the yearfor music.
Let me tell you that that was top tier music.
Yeah, I was just going to do the90s, but then when I started
looking at really good songs, I'm like, we can just do the
(20:03):
early 90s and there's probably going to be a later 90s one of
these days because there was so much stuff here at the
beginning. This is 90s dance.
Yeah, but there's other good 90sand late 90s dance, so.
OK, so the next song is a littlemore rocky.
OK, I would guess. Yeah, I don't know.
It's EMF. Don't know what it stands for.
(20:23):
I don't want. I don't want to think too.
Hard. And you know what it stands for
the song. You know how often you say, Jim,
you're unbelievable. That's what the name of this
song is. Unbelievable, unbelievable,
unbelievable. All right, let's take a listen
on the vinyl curriculum. Help me with your questions.
You haven't found our lies. You always ask what it's all
(20:44):
about. Don't listen to my reply.
You're unbelievable. You know, when I find
unbelievable is how many A's I'mgiving out this episode, That's
(21:06):
another. AI think it was a holiday.
What? What did you do over the Labor
Day break? It's probably just must.
Be just relaxed. We went on the boat.
We yeah, did some golfing. What did we do yesterday?
We went and ate some BBQ yesterday, Labor Day.
OK. But I just, I'm, I'm in a good
mood today. Unbelievable.
This really, this truly is unbelievable.
(21:27):
This is me turning over a new leaf.
No, this is just me playing songs that you like in your
wheelhouse. Well.
I should have found what is a dance song that you absolutely
would probably hate. I should have looked for that.
That was #1 as well. I don't think there is a dance
song that I would hate. I can probably find one.
We'll find one in the late 90s. One.
Jim's like, are you challenging me?
(21:47):
So, yeah, that was #1 I like it.And I looked at the EMF stance,
it's Epsom Mad Wonkers, and it was the name of a fan group of
the band New Order, which was from England.
Yeah. And for whatever reason, they
initialized it and called themselves EMF.
Sure. That's more like indie rock, but
(22:10):
it's not dance music. But that's a good dance.
It's fun to dance to. A lot of these are hockey songs
from the childhood. These are they played in the ice
rink. You know, you're you're you're
in between plays and you're on the ice and you're, you know,
giving a little, giving a littlegroove to it, you know what I
mean? And I think that's why it just
sparked lower a little somethingin my brain that's saying, man,
(22:35):
this is some good music, I tell you what.
The lower the history of it so you have that connection.
Yeah. All right.
What's the next? One, did y'all ever jump around
when y'all were on? There probably could have been
skates. Oh, I, I did some jumping.
I did some jumping. That was this was we also used
to go roller skating. We'd go roller skating and we we
would jump around on the roller skates.
And this is another fan favoriteof the ice rink.
(22:59):
The next year, 2000, I mean 1992, House of Pain.
Yes, yes, we just jump right into it, jump into it, get it,
jump right into it. I get I like it,
(23:23):
man. I I just I can't get over.
That was some good jumping you were doing there.
I was, yeah, it was. Normally I have to jump through
hoops to make you entertain, butI think just my pure
satisfaction of your song choices is enough for you.
That's another A from this side of the table.
Okay. That is just.
(23:45):
That did not make number one. That made #3 still very.
Successful. What was what beat it out for
#1? I had to look it up, but you
know, there's so many songs. This was what year?
This is 92, but you know, this is you go to sports Arena, like
games, like they'll play this toget everybody up.
(24:05):
Oh well, you know. In 1992 though #3 was jump by
Criss cross. It wasn't jump around.
I know, I'm aware. Don't look at me like this on
all things. Oh, I know, Criss cross.
See, I don't like him because they were kids.
Criss Cross, I don't like kids, but it was beat out by Sir Mix a
lot. OK, baby got back and boys to
men. End of the road.
(24:27):
Little boys to men. Action, boys to men.
No, they had some good songs, but yeah, so it makes a lot
though. That's pretty.
That's a good one. That's another, that's another
top tier that might have been. If you would have picked that,
that might have been the second A plus.
Oh. That's another.
That's another fan favorite in the CAP household.
Let me tell you a fun one. Yeah, yeah.
(24:49):
No, this was true this. Was just as it was 24 on the
Billboard year end Hot 100 singles of 1992 so maybe it was
you were confusing it. Well, the year end though
doesn't mean that's as high as it.
That's true. That's true, right?
You questioning me? Yes.
Please don't because I'm wrong, all right?
(25:09):
The next one is snap exclamationpoint is the name of the group
snap exclamation point. Yeah, without really.
Cool. It's not just snap, it's got to
put that in. Some album art on there we're
doing, since we're doing in the podcast studio, I get to see all
the album art. That's cool.
Yeah, I like it. This isn't rhythm as a dancer,
and I know you've heard this. Oh yeah.
(25:30):
Oh yeah, I have. Let's let's just hear it real
quick and then we'll hear what you have to say about it.
How's that sound? Please do.
All right, That has a lot of rhythm to that song.
You know what else is the dancerLogan.
Yeah, I don't, but yeah, unfortunately I was given.
(25:54):
I have a lot of talent. I have a lot of, I have a lot of
talent. Unfortunately, rhythm music not
included in any of that talent. But you can ride a unicycle, so
you know, we got, we take them again, it balances.
Out, I guess, right? Yeah.
Rhythm and dancer, though, that I do like that song.
(26:16):
This middle section, though, is a little ongoing.
But if that's what I'm saying, if you were on the dance floor,
you would not care because you're being your groove.
You're absolutely right. That's why I had to give it
another A. OK, I had to get another A
because I've danced to this song.
Yeah, that only went to #5 #1 inning in in Europe, but only 5
here. Again, there's probably some
(26:38):
other stuff on top of it that. That was what year?
That was what, year 9292? Yeah, 92.
And it wasn't on. I was just looking at the
Billboard top 100 end of year 92and it wasn't.
I didn't see it on here. Maybe it is, maybe I just didn't
see it. Well, it come, it could have
come at the end of the year and then it wouldn't make the chart
for the yearly. Oh, it was here it.
(26:58):
Was 75 #75. Let's see if it came out in the
end of the year, it wouldn't be as high because that's why you
can't necessarily go by those. You know, it came out in March,
but. Oh well.
You know, to each their own. Or maybe it went up and then it
came down. Maybe it didn't stay up there,
up and down. All right, snap on the vinyl
curriculum. What's next?
The Bodyguard soundtrack. Oh, that's a great movie.
(27:22):
I don't think I ever saw it. I don't think I did.
What I don't think I saw, I don't know.
Oh my God, we're going to have an We should have a movie
episode just where we like, playclips from a movie.
As soon as you watch, we can do the I would do the soundtracks,
like soundtracks of movies because that was a big one.
It was. It's one of the highest grossing
(27:42):
ones, which I don't it's just because of her but but anyway,
this one is a remake. Yep, and it's the tie in to
Lewis University. And how is it tied in to Lewis
University? Chaka.
Khan Chaka Khan originally recorded this.
Chaka Chaka Khan. It does.
It does sound anything like that.
Logan. I'm Every Woman by Whitney
(28:03):
Houston. Yeah #4 on the billboards #1 on
the dance party. And Whitney Houston has a lot
more musical ability than I do so.
And she recorded this while she was pregnant.
Wow. Yeah.
That's impressive. That's an impressive feat.
It's an impressive feat to carrya human being to start with, but
(28:23):
to produce a top tier quality dance song?
Do the vocal well. Do the vocals when you got Yeah.
All right, but I'm every woman, Logan.
Let's all right. This is Whitney Houston on the
Mile curriculum. Whatever you
(28:54):
want. Whatever.
You. Need Are you casting spells?
No, not today. Lookout, what are you doing?
You're throwing stuff around over there.
That was a little different. What?
Do you mean different? It's just different than some of
the other songs. I like the way it starts off
slow and then she you, you're building, you're building it up.
(29:14):
What do you you know it's coming?
Yeah. But it's just it, it does not
deliver on the on the the surprise there of the beat drop.
But you knew, see, everybody knew that song from years ago,
decades ago. And so when you knew she was
singing, it's like, oh, OK, she's fixing to kick it in.
And she did. Yeah, I'd say B plus.
(29:36):
Oh, poor Whitney. There's something about there's
something about Chaka Khan that you don't anything, anything
that's affiliated with her, you do.
You gave her AC. Plus, if you remember correctly,
I do it almost put Suzanne into she was so.
Upset with you. I'm sorry, Suzanne.
I really apologize. OK, our first B.
(29:57):
Plus, I know I thought we were going to make it through all of
them with with an A with an I'm sure though that porn.
Card, don't you think that's you, Logan?
You just wanted to kind of. I'm just like throwing a wrench.
Yeah, I think so. I think it's obvious we you say
B plus you mean an A but. I don't.
I don't know if that's the case,but there's a next one now is.
(30:18):
One of she the next one is JanetJackson, one of my all time
favorite artists. Do you know where she first
started? Where or when?
On what? On what?
I don't know. TV.
Oh, and was it like, I don't know.
She used to come out like when the Jacksons, we had little
specials and stuff, but she was on good times.
Yeah. And she was the little the
(30:40):
daughter, the adopted daughter of the neighbor.
Whatever she came in, she's a little girl.
Never. Watched Good times.
Well, it was, I mean, yeah, it was based out of Chicago.
You know what? I'm talking about.
JJJ he'd go. I know mine I can't do it but.
Dynamite. Is that what that's from?
Yeah, well, I mean, that was a saying.
But he, he used to do it. JJ Walker, he was a comedian,
(31:04):
very you know, you look a lot alike.
Tall and lanky. And handsome.
Devilishly handsome. Google him this.
This is #1 Grammy for best R&B song.
That's the way love goes in thisbeat.
Kills it. All right, let's take a listen
(31:24):
on the vinyl curriculum. Here's Janet Jackson.
What kind of dancing are you doing to that song?
That's called I don't know, I'm dancing in my seat.
(31:47):
I get, I mean if you're in like a retirement home maybe and
you're just kind of. I guess I will probably be doing
that when I'm in a retirement home.
Well, you know, I'm not even going to say it.
Logan. What?
What this again? What are you going to say?
What are you going to say if youyou're going to get this to low
(32:08):
grade because it starts off slow.
I know you are. You're so predictable.
This whole song is slow. What are you talking about?
You don't think you can? Dance into this song?
No. Oh my God.
I'd like to bring up another point.
You you said you don't like vinyl.
Yes. This is the second song that has
the vinyl. I wanna call it the vinyl
effects where it sounds like it's a record.
(32:29):
It's good. It has like the vinyl sound.
OK. Then you like it OK.
What's the point? The point is, you told me you
didn't. Like it, you know, what I don't
like is having to put a black thin disc on a thing in the hole
(32:51):
and then line up the thing and put it on there.
And then you got to wait for it's over and then someone's got
to get up, take it off and put it on, flip it over.
So that's why. Careful.
All right, we're just going to go solid B.
See, this is what it's so predictable because it starts
off slow. That's what just admit it.
You know how we last time I had my This is why I typically like
(33:14):
songs and this is what would cause me not to like it.
I at least said if it's redneck or whatever I tend to not like
it. Yeah.
You should just say and this. This means you're not non
biased. This is going to you're biased
or I said I said impartial. You're not impartial if you have
these these biases going in which you have.
(33:35):
So that's what I think Meg has been complaining about all every
episode. I think you drive her crazy.
Talk to Meg because I feel like a lot of this feedback is is
faceless. There's people comments on the
Internet about negativity towards me, just towards me.
It's not towards you, it's towards me.
It might be our first call in live call in I.
(33:57):
Think you do it too. Defend myself here because this
is this is. Heads up, Meg, we're going to
schedule a time where you're going to call in and you can let
him know what you really think. Oh.
Gosh. All right, we can only get one
more Logan. I know this is kind of sad.
I know. Yeah, it makes me.
The next one's from Iceland. Now she's from Iceland and
(34:17):
that's my dream vacation. I want to go to Iceland so bad.
Isn't there? I mean, you want to go like in
an igloo or? Why would you even say that
they're hotels? But isn't it just like
Antarctica there? Yes, exactly like that, Logan.
That's why so many people go there and it's the destination
(34:39):
to go to. I thought they go to.
Greenland, yeah, Yep, that's what they do.
They all go to Greenland and nobody goes to Iceland.
So you go to Greenland on your next.
Trip OK, I've I've seen picturesof Greenland now it's beautiful.
Greenland has some green, it does.
Iceland has the volcano, so theyhave the Northern Lights
(34:59):
hopefully. But I thought it was just ice,
is it not? Now you're just starting to make
me angry. You know Dang well that Iceland
is not that. That's why they I don't know why
they did that though. And do you, do you like what
Viking shows, Viking shows? I love Viking shows.
I kind of ship like with the horns.
(35:19):
But like Netflix has some reallygood ones.
What called Vikings? It's watch, it's a good series,
but they ended. Up going to Greenland.
They end up going to Iceland first, 'cause it's first.
And then Leif Erickson went on over, I think I'm saying this
right, to Greenland and then they came to North America.
They think he that Leif Erickson, he kind of got kicked
(35:40):
out. Yeah.
Is that right? I don't know.
Or is that his son? I have no idea.
I'll have to go back and watch it again.
All right. This is Bjork.
Bjork and the J The O has a umlaut.
A what? A umlaut.
Can you spell that for me? Yeah, the two dots, umlaut,
beige UMLAUTI think it's been a long time since I took German.
(36:01):
You know, I took 4 semesters in college.
Stop it right now. Gutentag Vasislos istukronk
Conan C does books to be Aaron. See, I have a southern accent.
It's a terrible sound, right? No, it's not all right.
But anyway, big time sensuality.I don't know if you're dancing
to this song, but all right, let's take a listen.
Let's take a listen. Is this in English or is this
(36:37):
in? Yes?
She she speaks Icelandic or what?
Icelandic, But that's English, not German.
You just can't understand her. No, I heard that I understood
sensuality, but a lot. My hearing is not very good, but
that. Yeah, she's out.
She used to be in the Sugar Cubes, which is they have a song
(37:01):
called Birthday That I love, which was on MTV, used to have
120 Minutes show. It's called.
It was all alternative. Music and it was.
Was it 2 hours? Wow.
How did you know? Yeah, and they did a couple of
compilation albums. Yeah, I think there were two
double discs. But anyway, Volume 1 and Volume
(37:23):
2 and she was on one of those called Birthday.
It's your birthday. Totally bizarre, but she just, I
like it. Most of their stuff was a little
out there. Then when she went solo like
this, she did had a lot of dancestuff.
That's pretty good. Yeah.
I'll give it AB plus. I think you got tired.
I don't think so. You got.
Tired of all the dancing and youjust gave up on the last three.
It's it's harder for me to visualize myself dancing to a
(37:46):
song like this. Where, where are you going to
dance? You're not at a wedding.
At a club, what are you talking about?
Who's going to the club and nobody goes to the?
Club we did when I was this age I we would go to the club.
Well, I don't think we'd do thatanymore.
You don't have clubs. I mean, I have golf clubs but
not like go out to the club, probably goes to the club.
I don't know what club. Where you go dancing then?
(38:09):
We just I I dance in the. Street on the boat.
Dance with myself. I don't know, dude.
I you know, OK, that's your problem.
I do. I do.
Need to go out to. They have clubs.
I know my son's going to clubs. Well, I need to talk to him then
because I don't know about what these clubs.
I don't go to club. There used to be, when we first
moved here, there was a 70s retro dance club called
Polyesters and I wanted to go sobad, and by the time I got
(38:33):
around to saying I'm going to go, they had shut down.
That would have been so, but it was all disco.
That would have been so much fun.
Yeah, yeah. I don't know.
I haven't gone to the club. The club.
I'm going to look up a club and I want you and your fiance to go
and report a video your dancing skills.
Yeah. Or lack of.
(38:54):
Yeah, I could dance. I could.
Dance Wow. A a + a -.
A a a a A B + B Oh, he's gettingtired.
B Plus. No, I, I, we swung back.
The pendulum was starting to swing back the other direction.
We got we, we ended on AB plus we had a very, very strong
start. You know what?
(39:15):
It's 19/19/93. For some reason you give all the
1993 songs bees B pluses. That.
We What do you have against that?
That's the year I got married. In. 1992. 1992 had some top tier
tunage, OK. And then after that it was just
straight downhill. I don't know what that said.
I don't know. I don't know what to tell you.
(39:37):
It's the year I got married that's offensive.
What do you have against my? Wife, did you play these songs
at your wedding? No, none of them.
We, you know, we didn't have a like we didn't have.
We got married and we had a reception and then we left.
It was. You didn't play music.
No, I mean, we had in the wedding, we had music, organ and
handbells and everything. Wisconsin.
(39:58):
Did you get married in in the South or where did you get
married at? Down South, Oh, that's where I
met my wife at the bowling alley, I told.
You. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I know, I know. At the bowling alley.
OK. All right, Well, I could think I
know what the answer to this one's going to be.
What's your final grade, Logan? So it was a big day today.
We had our first A+ and have never had over 100 songs
(40:21):
listened to. Never had an A+, probably will
never have another A+ again. I think overall I got to give it
an AI, got to hit. I have to give the genre as a
whole an A because you had some poor song choices at the end.
But but but. B plus is not a poor song
(40:41):
choice. I agree and it's it, it actually
I don't agree, but it I don't know it that I always tell
people what kind of music do youlike?
They ask me what kind of music do you like?
I say 90s early 2000's pop well.That was dance.
This isn't that pop pop. Dance ish.
It's probably more dance than itis.
Right, that's what I'm saying. Because these last three were
(41:02):
all dance songs and you felt like they were too slow.
You were slow dancing to those songs.
Maybe, but. Do you ever fiance?
I'm just curious. Well, she, I mean, it's very
difficult because she's a foot shorter than I am.
So it's like right into the belly button kind of issue, but.
You're not that much shorter than me and.
Do you want to slow dance with me?
What are you talking about saying I know what it's like to
(41:24):
to be tall and just slow dance with someone who's not as close
as you. So she always tells me I need to
squat. So is that a no?
You don't. I mean, we just sometimes.
Well, I guess if you have a black hole where your heart's
supposed to be, it's probably noneed to.
What is my grade for the episode?
I give you an A of course. Yes, yes.
(41:45):
Yeah, what have you. If you had kept them all within
the A range, even a minus, I would give you an A+.
Wow. Because.
But no, can't do that. OK, well.
I think that's some solid. We actually said one time we
don't give a pluses and you justdid that.
Well, I mean, you got to come inand surprise, surprise with the
surprises once in a while, so. Lots of fun.
(42:09):
Lots of fun. That's a good playlist.
Just put in the car because you can just go tap your feet.
Absolutely. Put that on.
I'm going to save that playlist.I'm going to listen to it again
because it was so good. All the playlists are available,
by the way. Jim does an excellent job
putting them together on Apple Music and on Spotify.
You go to vinylcurriculum.carrd.co,
(42:31):
vinylcurriculum.cardwith2rs.co and you can find links to all
the podcasts on Spotify and on Apple Music and leave on iheart.
Do you have the links to iheart on there?
No, no, it is available on iheart.
But and then all the links to the playlist, all the links to
our brand new social media channels.
So if you have not followed us on Instagram, go and do that at
(42:53):
the Vinyl Curriculum. We're also on Facebook at the
Vinyl Curriculum as well. You get some to see Gemini's
beautiful faces on a weekly basis.
And we love your feedback and comments.
And Meg, I'll be calling you soon.
Oh. Gosh, I am not looking forward.
(43:14):
All right, we'll catch you all on the next one.
Bye.
