(00:02):
Every record tells a story. Independent labels.
I think a lot of interesting songs came out of that.
And every generation has a soundtrack.
The only hip you have in your body is made of titanium.
This is the final curriculum with Logan.
Apparently I don't know very much about anything.
Somebody calls her Tay Tay. Welcome back to another episode

(00:25):
of the Vinyl Curriculum. Jim's making funny faces at me.
Jim and Logan here, recording itlive in the podcast studio.
Jim, how we doing? I'm doing great.
What could we record not? Live, no.
Well, I want people to know thatwe're not, we're just, we're
doing a live. It's live to record anyway.

(00:46):
Oh, I think it's obvious. They've they've they've heard
what we're doing. Yeah.
It's hard to believe this is 14 episodes.
It really is that's we started this there must have been 14
weeks ago. Wow, I know, good summer.
It was there. It was going to be a summer
project. It was and it evolved a little
bit and I'm glad we've made it this far.

(01:06):
I'm excited for Season 2. It's a lot of fun.
Season 2, we didn't get renewed yet.
Yeah, Well, this to be just to determine this week, though,
Logan is, as you know, because you've listened to the playlist.
You you promised me. You did.
I did very proud of you. I did.
It's collaborations. It's two different artists or
two different groups that typically you wouldn't

(01:28):
necessarily put together that have come together and done some
great music, in my opinion. Yeah, and we also, I'm going to
add more sound effects. I think I like those.
We got the new some new sound effect buttons so get ready.
There's a limit twice for each one and you just hit that one.
Thank you. Thank you, live studio audience

(01:48):
today. So collaborations meaning
multiple artists working together, that's what you mean
by collaborations? They're not groups like, you
know, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were the Eurythmics.
So that's not really a collaboration because that's
they were their group. So you have, you know, this
person did this thing, this person did this thing and they

(02:10):
say, hey, let's get together andwe'll a lot of times it's just a
song. It wasn't an entire album, but
you know, it's I like it becausesometimes it will take the one
artist and push them a little bit in a different direction.
OK, and well, I'm excited. I've, as you said, have listened
to the entire playlist and let'sjust say I have some thoughts
about it. You always do.

(02:30):
I'm excited to share them with you.
What is the first song that we'll be listening to?
The first song is a group calledBent.
Bent. BENT don't know anything about
them. They're kind of electronic group
I found out. But they, I guess this is a
collaboration. They brought in a song, 2 songs
from Billy Joe Spears, who's like a traditional country

(02:52):
singer and put a beat to it. Kind of combined them to make it
sound like she's singing one song and I just love it.
Yeah, and there was a there's a couple country collaborations.
I'm looking forward to the one at the end there, which if you
haven't heard the playlist, go and listen to it.
It's available now on the website
vinylcurriculum.carrd.com.co.co.co.Yes, OK.

(03:18):
So that's got a link to there's a link to the Apple Music
playlist and the Spotify playlist.
It's got everything on that website.
Check it out. For today though, we will be
doing things a little bit differently because Jim wants to
listen to each part of the song with each of the singers and
then singing together. So we're going to play a couple
different clips of the song. Normally you're just used to

(03:39):
hearing us talk. Then we'll scratch and skip
towards the end of the song. Us in the studio will listen to
the entire song, but you listening to the podcast,
unfortunately we can't play the whole song because of copyright.
So we're going to play a couple different clips though, so you
can kind of get a little bit of a vibe of how this song feels.
But you still are encouraged to go and listen to the entire

(04:01):
playlist, as I already did. And I'm going to bring that up
as many times as I can just to make Jim happy.
He got scolded last week by me. I did.
I did so now though so long without you by the group called
Bent, not to be confused with other groups by the same name.

(04:23):
And don't forget Billy Joe's fears as a singer.
All right, let's take a listen here on the vinyl curriculum.

(04:51):
Jim's in here doing the rumba. That might have been the
merengue, isn't that? A Isn't that a dessert?
Yes. No.
No, that's lemon. Meringue pie merengue is a Latin
dance that I have done once or twice, but I don't know what I'm
doing. You're supposed to get your hips

(05:11):
involved, and it has. I have a hard time with that.
It's. All in the hips.
All right, it's not bad. They have it's a good beat.
I'd like to it's like a a good drum.
I don't even know it's that's more of like a bass, though.
It's like boom boom, boom, boom, right?
Yeah, I think it's I mean, not my favorite song I've ever

(05:32):
heard, but I think we we got to just I know knowing some of the
other songs on this playlist, I think we got to go B minus.
What is that? No, it it's the song is what
you're doing. But the playlist is part of it.
Though, but the playlist is yourfinal grade right now you're
doing per song so don't judge. You're letting yourself confuse

(05:54):
yourself. What is this song?
I guess we'll give it a B if we're just if we're just looking
at this song. How we're doing, Then you're
going to give me the collaborative?
Yeah. After 14 episodes I still don't
know how this works. What I like about this song,
though, you're right. I like to beat it.
It's just kind of fun and just, you know, it's chill, it's
nothing, whatever. But then all of a sudden she
comes in with this country twangy voice and I loved it.

(06:16):
I don't know. I've never heard of Billy Joel
Spears and she's passed away. But great country voice and she
kind of, I don't know if you like old country music, I do.
She had a little Tammy Wynette twang when she came in.
Really like it? Yeah, I've never heard of Bent
or Billy Joe Spears, but. They're very electronic, you

(06:36):
know, and I think it's another group in here that's that way.
They don't do a lot of their ownsinging.
You know they will enter. Like, yeah, include samples or
whatever it's called, you know, you know, so good start.
I guess not as good as some of the other songs like this next
one I'm really excited about this is this is has been on
playlist of mine before. So this is this is going to be

(07:00):
positive. This is Feel Good Inc and it's
gorillas with De La Soul. And so the gorillas aren't,
aren't they like a robot band orsomething?
They're like a virtual band. How does that work?
Because they have concerts and Istill don't.
I don't get it. I.
Don't know how they do the concerts.
I don't know, I. Thought they had like robots
that they had on stage, like Anna, like Chuck E Cheese,

(07:21):
animatronics. It could have been because I
know when, when, if at least theway I remember it, when they
came out early 2000s, no one knew who they were.
Like the, the the videos were always cartoons.
Yeah. And so it's like, who are they?
But I think now you it, it'll say who they are.
I still don't know. I don't recognize the names, but
I didn't know they do concerts. Why would I want to go see Chuck

(07:44):
E Cheese animatronics with something?
Like that, yeah. So this the song called Feel
Good Inc. I think we just jumped right
into it and and we've got a lot of songs to give through today
and then we will, I will provideanother impartial grade and
right after this year on the vinyl curriculum.

(08:24):
That's got to be one of the bestparts of the song right there.
And it's. Great.
The gorillas featuring De La Soul.
Is this De La Soul? De La Soul, I don't know.
We're John Baptist De La Salle here at the university, so I
don't know. I'm, you know, De La Soul.
I brought them up when we were talking about the funky 70s with
Parliament and that not just theknee deep song, that's 30

(08:47):
something minutes long. Yeah, De La Soul did me, myself
and I, and it was a big samplingof that song.
And then bigot. Oh, I was going to say I've
never heard of De La Soul, but apparently I have.
You would know that. Song, I have to go back and
review my notes, I think. Yeah, hold on.
I'm sure they're in the. I'm sure they're in the garbage.

(09:08):
Here we go. Oh, Oh yeah, here we go.
De La Soul, right here. It's written down in ink.
This is what's interesting aboutthis song though.
Logan Grammy for There is a category category called Best
pop collaboration with vocals. Oh, interesting.
And they won it. It was 14 on the Billboard
charts. What?
Year was this. This is in O52000O5, went to #2

(09:30):
in UK. OK, the first one was 2000, by
the way, the bit song. I think we got to give that song
an A. OK.
I've, like I said, I've had thatsong on my playlist before, so
obviously very familiar with it.It's not a song you would
necessarily like dance to, but. Who?

(09:52):
That's OK. I guarantee you I would dance to
this song. I'm going to start by the way
we're. Not doing the Roomba to this
song. It's the Rumba Roomba is what
cleans the carpet. But The thing is, on our vinyl
curriculum Instagram page, you might not know this, but we

(10:13):
follow it's called 80s dance or something like that and it's
constantly showing videos of dance parties and stuff.
When back in the day and we danced to everything we would,
this wasn't out, but we would dance to something like this.
You dance to a slow song, you dance to a upbeat song, you
dance to everything. Because we would go dancing.

(10:34):
Y'all don't dance. We danced.
Well, maybe I should talk to my Dyson, see if he can give me
some dancing lessons, maybe do the the Roomba.
Talk to who? The my Dyson vacuum cleaner.
That's what I thought you said and I would just want to confirm
it before I. I don't think so.
I think that deserves a yeah, yeah.

(10:55):
All right. An A for Feel Good Inc.
That's good. Is it anchor?
Incorporated do we have we decided that?
They're the only one. Used to be limps Lips Inc
Remember they did Funky Town andthey would say Lips Incorporated
but it was Inc. OK.
Well, this is Inc period. Of course it is, because it's
abbreviation for incorporated. OK, whatever.

(11:16):
All right, Next one is. This is another one now.
This is an honor of my daughter.No.
We used to watch American Idol when Jordan Sparks was on it.
Yeah, And we loved her. And then when she came out with
this song, I remember we would be driving in the car singing
this song. She was probably TN or
something. Yeah, I remember one of my in

(11:37):
middle school, my janitor's son was on America's Got Talent.
He made it like all the way to the finals.
Oh, I did not say America's Got.Talent.
No, no, no. American Idol.
I'm sorry, American Idol. I misspoke.
I used to watch America's Got Talent, but I never.
Watched people would juggle right and ride you.
Then have multiple talents. And then they had all these
singers on America's Got Talent too, when there's ten other

(11:57):
shows that they can go on. Because they couldn't get on
that one. I'm not heated about it.
No, it doesn't bother you at all.
OK. This one, though, you know, this
one, there's no air. Yeah.
Jordan Sparks And then Chris Brown.
Yeah. And is, does he have issues?
Chris Brown, was he in legal issues or is that somebody else?
Because this is not really my genre, but.

(12:19):
I think Chris Brown, who was married to Rihanna, wasn't it.
Chris Brown, I think, isn't. That a football player.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. It was I.
Well, let's look at let's play the song.
We'll figure it out. We'll investigate.
And right here in the vinyl curriculum, we're learning.
We're learning things 2. 1007 onthis one.
All right. So it was Chris Brown who was

(13:06):
charged with a felony of beatingup Rihanna in an elevator.
So no class no. But song is good.
This is one that I was familiar with on the list.
There was just a few, this one and the last one.
So this one though, there's, there's and I, I don't mean to

(13:31):
bring down the mood here, but this, there's certain songs.
I, I, I think when I was young, I think I heard this song at a
funeral. Oh, and no air.
That's terrible. And.
Someone played no air at a funeral.
Well, yes. And so now every time I hear it,

(13:53):
that's all I can think about. Is it being at a funeral?
Is this a dream? No, no, no or did you dream this
or no? I still really like this song
and I'm going to give it an A, but I just felt that was an
important anecdote to share my connection to this song.
You had a nightmare because there's no way, someone said my
beloved has passed and I what songs we're going to sing.

(14:14):
No, no air. They play.
It was played. It wasn't sung, it was played.
No air. Terrible.
Yeah, yeah. No, I, Yeah.
Well, you got to do what you gotto do.
I know and so I that just alwayscomes to my head then.
That's yeah, crazy. And I don't even know if I

(14:34):
believe you, I think. Why would I make that up?
I don't know why would I make that up.
Sometimes I've had dreams where I wake up and they were so
vivid. Then I realize, oh, that was
just a dream. And I think you don't.
You might have forgot about thatone.
I don't think so, but so Jordan sparks, Chris Brown that gets an
A from this side of the table. Although I give Chris.
Brown, the like AD, Yeah, no, wedon't have time for that.

(14:57):
Yeah, he's negative grades, if that's even possible.
The next one though, Song calledAutomatic, yes.
Not to be confused with Song, no, that's more of a song that
I'm familiar with. Automatic, yes.
This is a group called Zedd. I don't know anything about

(15:20):
them, but again, I think they'reone of those electronic kind of
producer kind of people who teamup with people.
Electronic kind of producer people.
You know, like the last, I thinkthat's what Bent is.
They're like electronic whatever.
And then they have other people come in and, you know, do
collaborations and like. Steve Aoki.
I don't know who that is. He's the dude with the really

(15:41):
long hair. Who?
You've never heard Steve Aoki? I don't know.
No. Well, he's like, he's like a DJ.
Who? Kind of samples, yeah, there's a
bunch of them out there, but I think that's who Zedd is.
But you know who? John Mayer.
Is I do. And he's got a very like.
Sing songy voice right? And so that's why I love this
song because they, I don't know if it was Zedd, they said, hey,
we're going to we're going to boost it up a little bit.

(16:05):
But I love the energy in this one.
We're going to clash it together, Zed and John Mayer.
What a collaboration here on thevinyl curriculum.
Let's take a listen. We already tried to, and then we
say goodbye because you couldn'ttrust yourself.

(16:36):
That's very can I use eclectic is that or is that?
Your word, but I don't think that's the right word for that.
What do you what? What do you mean?
I don't know what eclectic is, but it's it's like a good
collaboration. Yeah, You know, with like a lot
of beats, you know, beat heavy, modern techno kind of business

(16:57):
going on. And John Mayer's like, I don't
want to know. I don't know about the opposite,
but kind of very different from this song, which is interesting.
This is a recent song. This is like last year.
OK. So that was 24/20/24.
I don't think it rates as high as No Error Feel good

(17:18):
incorporated, but I think it's still AB Plus.
But you realize with no error and feel good incorporated you
already knew those songs. That's has nothing to do with
it, and has nothing that has. Everything to do with it and.
Nothing to do with. Without you, you didn't know and
it was AB anyway. Thank you for at least being

(17:42):
honest about your biases. Yeah.
All right. I love that I it's just a fun
feel Good. Yeah.
Good beat. It's like a summary song, kind
of like you're at like a BBQ or something.
You're outside drinking. Some water.

(18:02):
I'm still struggling. Last week you were, we were
trying to imagine ourselves in the yard lit with the fire going
and you were complaining that no, that was we're on the patio.
Like you can take 3 steps off the patio into the yard.
But the you, there were two different vibes for you.
So sometimes I think you've lostyour mind.
No, no, no. I just, I try to express how I'm

(18:26):
feeling and I, I am pertude thatyou are constantly putting me
down. Pertude.
I don't know if that's a word. I don't think idiots.
Protude. OK, well.
All right, well, I, you know, hey, B plus is we've had a lot

(18:46):
worse from you, from B plus. So I'm I'll, I'll take that.
Now it's time for a song out of the Do we call this the Deep
South? Is Texas the Deep South?
Texas is the South. I don't know if I guess it is
the stars at night. They consider themselves
something different. But I want you to.
I want you to say the name of that group.
Texas. Say the name of the group.

(19:09):
Oh gosh, that's wow. I almost spell it for the the
listening audience. KHRUAN GB IN krungbin it is
Krungbin Krungbin Krungbin. Yeah, OK.
And Leon Bridges. I've heard of Leon Bridges.
Krungbin is they're kind of moreinstrumental and it's this is

(19:33):
when you hear it. That's this is their sound and I
love listening to their music when I'm at work because there's
very few lyrics except for this one.
They did an album together with Leon, but just kind of chill
music but got a beat and I really enjoy it.
What? Kind of other songs did Leon
Bridges do? He's kind of a bluesy kind of

(19:53):
let me look and see if I recognize any of them.
Texas River was the Texas sun. I'm Sorry was the first song to
come up in a River was another song I don't know if I've heard
of. I guess his name sounds
familiar. Is there another one?
Like another artist that has a similar name.
Neon. No.
What is neon? Something like we're playing

(20:15):
Jeopardy. What is neon?
Neon. Bridges.
No, Leon Bridges. Oh boy, I have.
It's been a long week. I have a song called Bad Bad
News and a song called Beyond that are liked.
You know how I told you I like them?
They go in there. So those are two songs I like.
All right. But anyway, yeah, this now that
we're going to go back a little bit, this was 2020, so not too

(20:39):
old. It was an EP Little, then an EP.
Yes, Exclusive. No, no, no, no.
It is excessive extended, extended play.
Yes, I knew it was something play.
Yeah, OK. So extended play and see what
you think. I like it.
All right, Texas Sun by Krongbin, Krongbin, Krongbin and

(21:03):
Leon Bridges. Take a listen.
You say you like the wind going through your hair.
Come on, roll with me till the sun goes down.

(21:26):
That might be a song that you hear in the Texas sun.
I mean, you know that song on the first part on a horse with
no name and felt good to get outof the rain.
That had nothing to do with Texas.
Well, but it gives me it gives me the same vibe.
It was American kids that were living in England and they call
themselves America, but they were, they were American, but

(21:49):
they were living in English whenthey came out.
Right. Texas sun, though.
Has nothing to do with Texas, but.
But I'm just I'm comparing and contrasting the vibe of that
song and Texas Sun. OK, that's what I they are from
Texas. Who Kung bin?
And you know what that. Krung Bin.
Krung bin means airplane in Thai.

(22:11):
Thank you for that very important piece of knowledge.
This says the stress is on the second when Krung bin.
Like Foo Fighters? Like that Foo Fighters or
Chicago? No Like Christopher Walken on
Saturday Night Live. I.
Didn't see that one. The emphasis on Foo or Fighters?

(22:31):
Foo Fighters. I mean, I don't have a very good
Christopher Walken, you know? Yeah, you're correct.
Texas Sun. Is different.
It is different it it's more of a late summer vibe in the car.
I can listen to that in the summer or the winter if I'm in
the mood. Just like I I also tend to

(22:52):
listen to country music in the summer, just because it's warm
outside and I, I envision myself, I don't know, riding a
horse or something, drinking a nice cold glass of water.
You realize people, most people who listen to country are
probably in the southeast ish and we don't have horses.

(23:12):
They do have horses out West andI guess people live out country.
It's not country western is whatyou used to call it, but most
people in the South do not ride horses.
Well in the West they have both types of music, country and
western. Yeah, they used to always say
country western. They don't say Western anymore.
Yeah, Texas Sun, I think we'll go solid B It's it's good.

(23:35):
It's a different vibe for me. I I appreciate the guitar that
it also just has a good beat, the singing it.
I know a lot of the songs that you bring here have to do with
the words. I, my hearing is just not good.
I'm supposed to be wearing hearing aids that I never wear.
So I have a hard time understanding lyrics to begin

(23:56):
with. And so a lot of it is based on
the jam. You know, Jack Black is all
about the jam where he's like, you know, he doesn't necessarily
hear the words, but you hear, you know, he was with Elton
John. I think he was on with that
Britt Graham Norton, the Britishtalk show, and he was trying to

(24:17):
explain to Elton John one of hissongs and Jack Black did that
and Elton John just was like, huh, just look right at and
we're like, what are you doing? Yeah, You know, so.
But salad B Texas Sun. Yeah.
Crung bin crung bin crung bin Airline bridges.
Yeah. I love it.

(24:38):
The next one, though. Here we go now.
Now we're getting into the music.
OK, now we're getting into the music.
Here we go. Ready.
Just play it, don't even all right prep anybody.
No, we're not even. We're not even.
You're not even prepared for what you're going to hear on a
vinyl curriculum right now. I can see you standing on it

(25:02):
with his arms around your body, laughing, but the joke's not
funny at all. I can see you staring, honey,
like he's just your understudy. Like you'd get your knuckles
bloody for me. That's Taylor.

(25:34):
Got to be a plus, I know, because you're such a huge fan
of hers. Song called Exile by Taylor
featuring Bone a ver bon, a ver bon a ver bon.
James. Bond That was from the folklore
album. I didn't know.
I guess I didn't know, but I never it never didn't occur to

(25:57):
me that the folklore album, she recorded all that at home.
That was all written during the pandemic and she just recorded
it at her home studio. I didn't know that but I mean
she probably has a mansion with a studio that rivals and he big
time recording studio at her house.
And to be honest, I'm not a hugeTaylor Swift fan.

(26:17):
However, I listen to this album because I love Bona Bear and I
wanted to hear well. What you said, Bone, it's a.
Bona bear, That's what I said. You said it's bone.
Well, it is. It's not Bona Bear.
It's Bona Bear. You was like bone.
It's bonaver, bonaver. You got it.

(26:38):
You got me anyway. Bonaver bone.
If I say if I say bond, it's notthat's the bonbon.
That's a candy, but so. I wasn't familiar with Bonaver.
Bonaver, whatever his name is before this song.
You sound I was it. We listened to it at the
beginning and I was like, man, Ireally like his voice.

(26:58):
Yeah. And you said he doesn't normally
sound like that. He.
Never sings that low. Closer towards the end, and
hopefully in that second clip and 3rd clip you can, you can
hear a little bit more of what he's typically sounding like,
right? But that's why I liked it,
because he went again, they're collaborating and he's they.
She probably said, you know, I'mthis is my range.
Can you sing it low? And he's like, OK, let's try it.

(27:21):
And I love it. But even when she comes in
first, it was it was on the lower end of her register.
Here's a good word for you. Register.
That could be confused with registry, which is what you and
your fiance are having to deal with.
Don't even, yeah, don't remind me of that.
I actually just booked the photographer.
So that's the step we're at. But Exile featuring Bone of Air

(27:45):
Taylor Swift. You know this is not my normal
cup of tea, however. B Plus Wow, I know, I know.
Which one's the clap? No, that's the wrong one.
OK, you deserve a clap for that one.
Yes. Yes.
And I will hold on. I'm sorry.

(28:07):
Thank you. Thank you.
I will say that listening to it beforehand and now listening to
it for a second time I think washelpful, so I will.
Logan, can you can you hand me atissue?
Because I think I'm fixing to cry.
I know, I know. So I will, I will let you know.

(28:27):
I think you you were correct. So thank you for that, but
before your head gets too big, why don't you introduce the next
song? Now that was 2020.
All right, yes. So this next one's the same
thing. I think we're kind of in
different orders now. What do you have next?
I have if the world was ending. By JP Sax never knew this guy or

(28:52):
Julia Michaels never knew her. Not to be confused with Julia
Michaels, the famous athletic trainer from The Biggest from
The Biggest Loser. Yes, I know who you were talking
about when you said that. This is another COVID song that
they kind of he kind of wrote, Iguess he wrote it.
I love it and I don't know anything is I've listened to

(29:13):
their stuff and the both of themhave a good sound.
Neither one of them very popularthough.
This also, well, let's listen toit first before I give my
thoughts because I think the people who are listening will
then understand and feel my pain.
Not pain, but I don't know. Let's take a listen, OK?
I was distracted and in traffic.I didn't feel it when the

(29:37):
earthquake happened, but it really got me thinking.
Were you out drinking? Were you in the living room
chilling, watching television after the world was ending?
You come over, right? You come over and you say the
night. Would you love me for the hell
of it? I do know this song.

(30:03):
I remember this was during my lifetime.
Finally, for once, one of your songs.
Logan, just about every one of these playlists you were
probably in high school or later.
I know, and that's probably why I'm so familiar with a lot of
this playlist and. Guess what?
They've all been very high grades.
Well, coincidence? I think not.

(30:25):
Yeah, this is good. I remember, as you were just
explaining to me off here, this was released right before the
pandemic. What did you say?
2019? And he's thinking about if the
world ended. If it was an ending, you'd come
over right and stay the night and all the problems we have
would be irrelevant. So obviously they were together,

(30:46):
they both were hurt after the breakup and they're both
thinking, yes, we wouldn't be worried about all the the stuff
that broke us up. We would just be able to enjoy
the moment as the ceiling is collapsing on something.
You ever seen the movie Don't Look Up?
No, I've never seen get out any of those.

(31:06):
Don't Look Up is from Netflix. It's a Netflix movie.
It's got Leonardo DiCaprio in itand very good.
It's about an asteroid that is coming towards Earth.
Maybe you shouldn't watch it though.
You're kind of an anxious person.
I am, but that kind of makes me think of that movie.
That song does so that song If the World Was Ending, featuring

(31:28):
Julia Michaels by JP Saxe. I think we'll go solid BI think
we'll go solid B What you're not?
Is this the one you said you were going to bring something up
that the audience would know? Oh well, I I just figured this
was an appropriate time to bringthis up, that this whole this
playlist has such variety, and you gave me such a hard time for

(31:51):
my playlist having such variety that this was honestly
exhausting. But the difference was my
variety is good. Yeah.
OK. Yours was not good at all.
And if we need to go back and review some of the grades, I
mean, right now we're B and higher.
Yeah. So see, I just kind of.
And they're not crazy. I'm not playing bluegrass right

(32:11):
now. This is all, you know, They're
pop songs. Yeah, all pop songs.
You were doing country pop. Yeehaw.
Johnny Cash, I mean, all kinds of stuff.
Well, this one, though, we're getting back into the upbeat
positive category with this nextone.
This is Rain On Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, who I'm to

(32:37):
be. I'm not a fan of hers at all.
I really wanted to go see the Lady Gaga concert.
She was just in Chicago last week.
All of them were during the week.
Her whole concert was Monday, Wednesday, Thursday I think.
If you're a Lady Gaga fan, you would not care.
It's It was at 7:30 at the United Center PM on.
A 70 years old, what's your problem?

(33:00):
I don't know. I just couldn't do I'm I'm a
tired little boy. Rain on me.
We've all heard this one. Let's take a let's take a
listen. That a great drop.
Yeah, let's hear it for. A free ride.
I only asked you to show me a real good time.
I never asked for the rainbow. Well, it's funny out today, but

(33:40):
man, this is a great song and this is a great song by two
great artists. We reviewed Lady Gaga, well, I
guess she wasn't on my list fromepisode #10 from A Star is Born.
But she was in that movie. She Co starred with Bradley
Cooper and that which was nice job, excellent, excellent.

(34:03):
And Ariana Grande, I was familiar with her from the
Nickelodeon show. She was she was on.
She talked like this all the time and she who do do, but I
guess there was a lot of drama going on there.
So I don't want to say too much because.
Have you read the book by one orthe other?
No characters? Yeah, there was there was some.

(34:23):
No, it was a very good book. I listened to the audio version
of her reading it. Jeanette McCurdy was her name
for people that are my age. I read her book.
Jeanette McCurdy Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
That's the book that I'm referring.
To never, you said you act. Like I said, one of her Co stars
wrote a book. One of Ariana Grande's Co stars
wrote a book. It was just one of those moments

(34:44):
where I was zoning out from you.Yeah, I don't, you know, she lit
cupcakes. You don't remember that as they
had video of her. What?
They had cupcakes at a like a bakery and she and somebody have
boyfriend, friends or whatever. And when no one was looking, she
reached up and licked one of thecupcakes and it happened to be
caught on video. And so then it came out and

(35:06):
she's like, oh, I'm sorry, but who would do that?
You know who would do that? Ariana Grande.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Google it. I was very and I it's hard for
me to let that go. Not a fan of hers, but I have to
say in the Wicked movie, movie sheep, it was good for her
because she does have a good voice and you know, she kind of
plays this little bratty whatever, which I think is kind

(35:27):
of her personality. So.
And she she brought back to the high pitched.
Head voice. That's Galinda.
You know, Glenda, Glenda and then Glenda, but you know, she's
the one that you kind of want tohate kind of in the movie.
By the way, that's a good book series.
I don't know. Wicked son of a witch and then.

(35:50):
Son of a witch. West of Oz Return to Oz.
That's the sequel. Oh, I didn't know there was a
sequel. It's a book, The book.
Gregory McGuire. Did you see that they put the
original Wizard of Oz into the sphere that you say I knew,
extend the frame and put it intoUltra?

(36:10):
It broke all kind of money records.
I mean, everybody's just flocking, yeah.
It looks cool. It looks really cool.
Those fear itself is impressive.Have you seen?
I've only seen the outside of. It I've never seen it since I
haven't been back since it's there, but photos and videos
I've seen it just one of these days.
Yeah, it is. It's very impressive.

(36:31):
And I think they had a drone show there too, and everything.
So very impressive. As well as this song Rain on Me
by Lady Gaga, featuring Ariana or with Ariana Grande.
Excuse me? Because there's a difference,
right? In parentheses.
In parentheses with Ariana Grande, I'm going to go A, I'm
going to go a. It's nice high pace dance music

(36:55):
and as we've established, that'swhat I like so.
Well, I'm glad you liked it. I love it.
That's a good. You know you're having a bad day
and you when that beat drops, you can't help but tap your
feet. I know I just picture you
dancing alone in the rain to that song.
Like doing the rain dance? OK.
That is not anything that's going to happen.

(37:16):
I'd like to see that. Though.
What? What I mean, you know I'm
talking about a thunderstorm. I used to play in the rain as a
kid. We used to love that.
I like playing in the rain, yeah.
I'm still a kid though so. No kids can stay up late, Logan.
OK, so the next one I want. I don't.
I don't. I need to know what you know
about Willow. Willow.

(37:37):
Willow is Willow Smith. I know this is her.
Oh, it is? Yeah.
OK, I don't know very much about.
Will and Tyler Cole, I don't know anything about either one
of them. That's not Tyler, The Creator,
right? Because I think Will Smith's son
was collaborating with Tyler, The Creator, who's another
musical person. Or maybe he was dating Tyler,

(37:58):
The Creator. I don't.
Know Willow, I think, I think Willow and Tyler Cole were an
item at once. But they collaborate on an album
and they call themselves The Anxiety.
Oh, terrible. I mean, I was listening to it.
Horrible. I mean, just weird, weird types
of music. Just not my thing.
But I love this song. Yeah.

(38:21):
This the song called Meet Me at Our Spot.
This is the live version. That's what it says.
It doesn't sound live to me. No.
Well, maybe, but it was just a high quality recording.
Kind of like what we're doing right now.
Exactly. Let's take a listen to Willow
and Tyler Cole on the vinyl curriculum when?
I wake up, I can't even stay up.I slept through the day.

(38:44):
Fuck I'm not getting younger when I'm older.
When I go to sleep, I can't evenfall asleep.
Something's gotta hold on me, feel it taking over me.
But when I'm. That's different.

(39:13):
And I think like I did listen toit, but hearing like going into
the chorus helps remind me of the song, you know what I mean?
So I think it's it's good for our podcast when we hear part of
that chorus because it helps remind me and it reminds the
listeners of the song, right? That was live.

(39:33):
I don't think the Spotify version is the what I was
listening to was live because I could tell that was live.
Yeah, it was. It was live.
Wasn't my favorite. It was like that was classic
band sound to me, like music bands, not like, not like at
school, but you know, it. Had you heard the drums and the
guitar? You know?

(39:55):
You said that that song reminds you of like a high school.
No, no, no, no, no. That's not what I meant.
No, I did a poor job of explaining like, it's just, you
know, classic. You're jamming on the guitar and
it's like, that's, you know, allI can hear then.
I think. I just think the way they sing
it was pretty. Cool, it has an interesting
voice. Is who is is that Willow?

(40:17):
Who's ever. She was, well, they both did it,
but she was the one that startedoff and then he came in and I
thought, oh, I like this song. So I'm sure that album.
Yeah, No, no, not my favorite song that we've heard today.
I I think we're going to have togo B minus for that one.
OK. I'm generally not a fan of live

(40:37):
recordings like in general. Me too, but there's certain
instances like the live recording of Folsom Prison Blues
by Johnny Cash when he was at Folsom Prison is the better
version of that song. So there are exceptions to my
own rule. But you know, I don't know in in

(40:58):
general, I'm just not a fan of. Live recordings I agree.
So I'm telling you, the 1 I had was that I would was listening
to, I listened to Spotify was not live.
Oh, well, that was that was the Apple Music version that we
just. Had a club of so I created that
so I must have put the wrong onein.
Now, Oh well. Now the next one is a group
called Churches, but the EU is AV, so I don't know why people

(41:21):
do that, but they do. Jake, there's another one.
Jake. He is the A is A or the JA is AV
like upside down anyway. Right, OK.
How not to drown. OK.
And I want you to it says who itis, but you don't know who this
person is. I want you to listen to it and

(41:42):
tell me who the male singer is. It's going to help him them out.
All right, well, let's take a listen and I guess I'll just
think about it. Let's do that.
Right, all right, I'll think about it here on the vinyl
curriculum. Here's how not to drown.

(42:30):
That's a pretty interesting collaboration.
I don't know if I recognize the male's voice.
We've we've two of their songs. Oh.
It it almost sounds like the guyfrom Imagine Dragons.
No. OK, then I don't know.
It's who's you just scolded me last week because I played the
same song twice. The same.

(42:52):
Oh, who was that? The cure?
The cure, Yeah. Yeah, Robert Smith is the lead
singer of The Cure. Yeah, I wouldn't know that.
I love that song. Is she?
For some reason I she reminds meof Evanescence.
Yeah, I was going to say it. It bring me to life, you know,
that that it kind of gives that vibes.

(43:13):
It's like that airy sound, like you can kind of hear it still, I
guess, like they're in a big open space.
I think that's that evidence now.
Love those open spaces, you bring that out.
The void, the white void from the late 90s.
Maybe they're recording in it. I don't know.
Churches and Robert Smith. I'd give it AB plus.

(43:36):
OK, you're in a good mood today,I can tell.
I am. I am for a Monday.
We record this on a Monday. You know, normally a little
tired. I need a little afternoon snack.
I had a nice big sandwich for lunch today.
Already. Oh, I yeah, I wanted to make
sure I was prepared. Oh, maybe.
All right, new rule you have to eat before you do the podcast

(43:57):
because you're. If I haven't eaten, I get a
little cranky. You're in a better mood.
Well, I didn't know that. Now I know.
Yeah, so anyway, we got a couplemore songs.
Here on. The vinyl curriculum.
Now this one, you, I know you know, but Noah Khan, he released
his album and then he I made another album with people doing
duets with him. OK.

(44:17):
And I love the this one's calledDial Drunk.
I love the original, but I like this one better because it's got
Post Malone in it. Who was?
Who was the original by? Noah Khan.
I see. I see.
I see. OK.
You know him, right? I probably probably do.
You don't. You don't recognize this song
because I think they released itwith just him.
OK, let's say, let's take a listen.

(44:39):
Yeah, there's a bunch of six season.
All right, well, let's take a listen and then we'll talk about
it here on the vinyl curriculum. We'll Post Malone, Noah Con
action I'm. Remembering I promise to forget
you now, but it's raining and I'm calling drunk and my
medicine is drowning. Your perspective.

(45:19):
Post Malone has a really distinct voice, you know what I
mean? Like it's distinct and it I
don't know if it's like electricor like electronic sounding.
Like I don't know if it's process.
Like you know how T pain has that kind of auto tune sound?
Yeah, but you know, he won The Masked Singer.
T Pain. Yes.
And nobody knew who he was. And he just sang and it was a

(45:42):
great voice. And then when he came out, I was
like, what? Yeah, he was making, he was
doing like Twitch streaming, playing video games online and
he was making. That was how what he was doing.
Yeah, anyway. You and your video people.
I'm just don't get it. I think Post Malone, though, we
actually saw him a couple years ago, the United Center, the we
remember when he fell in that hole in Saint Louis.

(46:04):
Well, he like a couple years ago, Post Malone fell in a hole
on stage and we saw him like this show before that happened
because they went from Chicago to Saint Louis.
Why did he fall in a hole? Because it was dark and there
was a hole on the stage. I don't.
Know. Probably high, wasn't he?
I have. I can't speak to that, but I
don't know he was. I don't know if he he was.

(46:25):
I think he quit smoking. He used to smoke on.
Stage He's lost a ton of weight.Yeah, it's kind of alarming, but
I think he quit drinking. I think that's what it was
anyway. Post Malone and Noah Khan dial
drunk. I like it.
It's it's kind of twangy. It's got that kind of country
beat to it. I don't know if it it not really

(46:47):
a banjo. I think that's just it might be
a banjo. Yeah, I think it is a banjo.
It's kind of like that. It's a little different.
A minus Noah Khan, Post Malone. Two things I wanted to say about
this one. Post Malone.
It was award show or something, and Nirvana showed up, Yeah.
And obviously Kurt Cobain is no longer around Post Malone

(47:11):
saying. And they did.
Smells Like Teen Spirit. Yeah.
And it was Post Malone. It was great.
Does it? Sound good?
I'll have to look that up because I like, I really like
Nirvana. It was crazy.
I'll have to listen. Although two of the members
were, you know, they're older and they looked older, You know,
they had bald heads or short hair or whatever and they were

(47:32):
wearing normal clothes. And then the one guy he looked
like he's and he's got. He's like 40.
No, he, he, he looks like he's a70 year old who's trying to look
like a 30 year old. He had black hair, which is, you
know, he dyes it and wearing theclothes with the and it's like,
stop. You're talking about Dave Grohl.
Is he? No.
He's the guy from he's the he's.He's Foo Fighter.

(47:54):
Right. But he was in.
He was. No, it's who's the other guy,
though? He's he's a guitarist.
Oh. I recognize him.
I don't know enough about Nirvana because I wasn't.
But anyway, just I'll have to, we'll have to look at that video
because you'll see what I'm talking about.
It's like everybody's acting their age except for this one
guy. And it's like stop.
But anyway, the other thing I was going to say.

(48:14):
Is pad smear. I don't.
That doesn't sound familiar. Maybe they brought somebody
else, somebody else quit and they brought on somebody else.
I don't know who. Was the guy that was in anyway,
I'll have to Google it. Yeah, All right.
Well, one more song. Here, no, I have to say
something else. OK.
The reason I know about Noah Khan and the reason I know about

(48:35):
Krungbin Krungbin is I was watching Austin City Limits.
It's a great concert show that'sbeen on forever and a day on
PBS, and they always have peopleand they had Noah Khan.
I'm like, I wonder who that is? And so I watch it.
I fell in love with it. And then that Krugman was there
and I'm like, wonder what they are and just watching them.

(48:57):
So if you're ever bored, go to PBS and look at this Austin City
Limits and you hear Brandi Carlile's been on there.
Everybody and their mother have been on there.
Yeah. OK, that was like we went my mom
was on WGN Morning News one timeand they used to do where they
would have bands on in the morning and we and we met a band
called Dirty Loops. Let's listen to some of their
stuff sometime. They're like a an English band

(49:20):
Dirty Loops. Here's my We can get him on the
podcast anyway, one more song. OK, one last one.
This is now. This was recent last year and
there's a documentary about the making of this album.
It was Brandi Carlisle with Sir Elton John.
Sir Elton John, one of my favorites.
I love it. It's an interesting podcast too,

(49:42):
because you could tell he was struggling.
He wanted to sound sing things the way he used to could and he
can't do it as well. But they they wrote the songs as
they were in the studio. So really interesting.
But this song is called River man.
I love it. You know when the Spotify does
they hear the songs you listen to the most last year.

(50:03):
It's probably going to be one ofthe this one.
Yeah, not to be confused with The Weatherman by Eddie
Benjamin. That's a different song.
You ever heard that one? No.
Although, yeah, don't tell weather man.
I said I was wanting a sunny outside anyway.
This one, I really like this. The river man that that's
irrelevant. The river man though, good for

(50:23):
Ryany. Let's just take a listen then.
We'll talk about it here on the vinyl curriculum.
Last one. All the weekend, lawyers
touching down, leaving a black stain on the sacred ground.

(50:59):
That's definitely similar to some of the other Elton John
songs that I've heard. Crocodile Rock.
You can hear the subtleties. I recommend you if you're that
interest you, watch that documentary is pretty good.
What's it on? Remember, it's one of the
streaming Netflixers, isn't it? I think it's called It's Not

(51:22):
River Man, whatever the name of the album is the lockdown
sessions or something, I don't remember lockdown sessions.
Anyway, great. There's a there's a section of
music in there where he's playing the piano and it's just
like the song called Grace Hill from his by Yellow Brick Road
album. It's like he copied and pasted

(51:42):
it. I mean, it's like I hear it so
easily, but I love that song. Yeah, it's an interesting combo.
Like when I heard it for the first time, I was it.
It sounds like it's something that shouldn't work, like Elton
John and a country music twang kind of thing.
But it really does, and I reallyliked it and I think I'm going
to give it an A minus. OK, the thing about Elton John,

(52:06):
he loves if you have Apple Music, which you do, he has a
podcast where he every week he just introduces you to new songs
because he's totally into tryingto help new artists, you know,
come out. So one of his last albums before
this one, I'm trying to look it up, they he does songs with

(52:28):
Young Thug. I'm serious.
Like it's crazy. Yeah, The River Man, though, top
tier to listen. He doesn't.
You don't really hear a lot of him singing in that song,
though. It's a lot of Brandy Carlyle and
he's just kind of in the background, right?
Does that track? Kind of, but he does some of the

(52:50):
other ones on some of the other songs.
But I think that's why he was getting frustrated in the
documentary, because he just doesn't sound like he used to
and he's like a perfectionist. Right.
So he would they record something, he's like, I don't
like it. And then, you know, Brandy was
kind of like it's you sound great or whatever, you know, so
you could tell he struggled at times where he was breaking down
crying. Sometimes he was yelling.

(53:10):
I mean, he's very emotional whenhe does it, but.
Yeah, he he strikes me as an emotional guy.
You saw Rocket Man, I assume? I did.
That's a great movie. Glad you actually saw a movie
again. I see movies all the time.
Here we go. Heck yeah.
What did they have to do with anything you.
Sing a movie. They should be a clap.

(53:31):
Thank you. I'll tell you what right now,
before you even give your grade,Logan, I'm clapping for you
because this, this was very, I mean a lot of BS B pluses or
whatever. However, nothing below AB minus
Yeah, some as thrown in there. Yeah, this is good.
This is yes. I think as, as we discussed

(53:54):
before, hearing the songs for a second time gives you a kind of
a breath of different ideas about the music.
And so I think overall though, Iwas pretty familiar with a lot
of the songs. So I think that also helped the
higher grades because a lot of them, I mean, I distinctly

(54:17):
remember No Error, Feel Good, Incorporated, that kind of
stuff, Exile, Taylor Swift action.
And then I mean a lot of artiststhat I like as well, Elton John,
Lady Gaga. Familiarity.
Lore type thing, yeah. Post Malone.
Here we go with the lore again. But it's the truth.
Anyway, the overall grade for modern collaborations episode 14

(54:42):
of the vinyl curriculum, I thinkwe have to go with an A minus OK
for the topic, the class today. I'll give you an A because you
did your homework. Yes, yes.
It makes a difference. Yeah.
Buddy Woo. All right, that's a little
excessive right there. Yes, well.

(55:04):
Listen to. I hope you'd listen to the
playlist, though, and hear some of these songs, and then if you
like them, listen to the rest ofthem.
Yeah, it's see. It's definitely worth the
listen. I'll tell you that there haven't
been a lot of worth a listen episode of 10 Logan's Choice.
That was a great podcast. Great pillars you should listen
to. I already turned it down.
You can't hear that. You can't hear the boot, the
trombone, but you should listen to this one, Modern

(55:27):
Collaborations. Jim, as always, it's a pleasure.
Thanks for another great playlist and we'll catch you all
on the next one. Bye.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
