(00:02):
Every record tells a story. Independent labels.
I think a lot of interesting songs came out of that.
And every generation has a soundtrack.
The only hip you have in your body is made of titanium.
This is the final curriculum with Logan.
Apparently I don't know very much about anything.
Somebody calls her Tay Tay. All right, Welcome back to the
(00:24):
vinyl curriculum. Ladies and gentlemen.
Look at this. You can see us.
Wow, it's different. Welcome, Logan and Jim here,
live recording in in our very festive Christmas outfits.
And another wonderful episode ofthe Vinyl Curriculum Holiday
Special. This is my hat's already
irritated me with these headphones.
But welcome to a little bit of an experiment today here on the
(00:47):
Vinyl Curriculum for video. Giving it a try and seeing how
it will go. Right, Jim?
Yeah. We wanted to see, you know, this
season 1's over, We want to do like a two more little holiday
special shows. 1 is going to be this holiday show, another one
we want to do like a year in recap when it comes to like new
(01:08):
year. So we thought why not try video
to see because we were hoping maybe next next year is episode
2. We're going to do video.
So you'll have to tell us what you think, but we're going to
give it a shot. It's going to be a little bit
raw right now. Well, I know people are just
going to love to see my beautiful face.
So I know that's going to make it for them to be able to see
(01:29):
what is see this beautiful character that I have.
I got to take the hat off already.
This is already not working. But yeah, we're just trying to
figure stuff out today and see how this, this whole video thing
works, you know, because we thought, hey, you love listening
to us, why not look at our beautiful face while we're
(01:52):
talking? I'm sure people have been
begging for this and we just didn't know about.
It they've been begging. Yeah, I I've received lots of
fax messages about it, some snail mail letters mailed from
the South Pole, and that's the North Pole.
Santa Claus hasn't sent us any letters.
But no, we're excited. We're going to see how this
works today and we So why don't you tell us a little bit what
(02:14):
we're going to talk. About we're going to talk about
holiday music, so not necessarily Chris, well,
Christmas music, but when you think about a lot of Christmas
music is not even religious. It's just like talking about
dancing around the tree, snow, stuff like that.
So what? Just tell me, what are your
(02:35):
thoughts of Christmas music? What are your thoughts of
holiday music? Yeah, I mean, so I used to be a
really big fan of Christmas music.
So you listen to 93.9, Light of Famine, Chicagoland area, they
play the holiday favourites. This is my little plug for them.
Early. Like they start early.
They started they've they've been starting earlier and
(02:56):
earlier every year, like they start now at the beginning of
November, which is a little too early, a little too early,
right. And when, you know, Nicole and I
started dating, I would be like,oh, let's listen to Chris music.
She hated it. She hated it.
So I was, you know, being the rambunctious, rebellious person
that I am, I was like, we're going to listen to more
(03:18):
Christmas if you say. And you were 12 when y'all met,
right? No, no, we were little older
than that. I was 15, so basically 12, but
we so then now it's kind of rolls reverse.
So now Nicole, as soon as the Christmas, she's like waiting by
the phone, waiting by the radio to for them to hit the big red
button and turn the Christmas music on.
(03:40):
And so, you know, I like it. This stuff that's in the
background right now. This is not my jam at all.
Hate it with a passion. Would like to turn it off
whenever you want. You could turn it off, but you
know, I tend to like Christmas music as a whole and I'm sure
we'll this was probably going tobe some of the most liked songs.
(04:02):
The most liked total playlist besides Logan's version #1 and 2
available now on Spotify and Apple Music that you can listen
to for the Vinyl curriculum. Well, I don't know about that
because these are songs I like. Now my my thought process on
Christmas music is I can listen to holiday music's for maybe 3
(04:23):
hours and then I've heard it allbecause when you listen to it on
the radio, it's the same thing over and over.
And we want to talk about that. So but what I can listen to all
day long is instrumentals. Like we just listened to that
was Wyndham Hill, which was likea production kind of studio and
they just did acoustic instrumental.
(04:46):
They had Wyndham Chill Christmas, Winter Solstice
123-4567, like just if you ever want to listen to acoustic
instrumental Christmas music, Windham Hill has a ton of stuff.
So I will listen to that all daylong.
I it doesn't, I don't get tired of it because it's background
music, but the same time I can hear the melody and sometimes
(05:09):
I'm singing along in my head right then I like offbeat stuff.
So there's so many Christmas albums and holiday albums from
pop stars, country singers, and you never hear them.
You hear the same ones over and over.
So let's this right off the bat, what are some of the ones you
cannot stand? Because I can give you 5.
(05:29):
Oh boy, I don't know. I'm not a not a big fan of the
slow songs, to the surprise of no one.
Because it's got emotion. In it because it's got emotion
in it. I'm sure you know the, the ones
that I'm that you're falling asleep to.
I mean, there is a, there is a place for those, especially on
(05:50):
Christmas, right? It's you sitting by the fire.
This is me visualizing where I'mgoing to listen to these songs.
You're sitting by the fire. You do that a lot.
You know, by the Christmas tree,it's all lit up.
Got new lights for the Christmastree, by the way, it looks
fantastic. Top tier Christmas lights or
multicolor? Both.
Both at the same time. They're programmable, so you
(06:10):
scan that, you get a 3D image ofwhere every light is so you can
map each one, so you can do designs and also I'll show it to
you. It's fantastic, highly
recommend. But while that all is going on,
I'm so distracted by the lights that I, I forget how terrible
the music is. You know, I'm hesitant to say
the names and and catch too muchhate for some of those songs.
(06:33):
So I think I think people know what songs I'm referring to
though. I would say Jingle Bell rock
rock around the Christmas tree. How do you not like Jingle Bell
Rock? Mariah Carey's All I want for
Christmas is you. Then I can understand that's
over. Just because they're overplayed.
No Jingle Bell rock though that is.
That is top tier. It was when I was probably 10 or
(06:56):
whatever it came out. But remember, I'm 60.
So I every for 60 years I've been listening to this stuff and
I'm just sick of it. So yeah.
But we're going to play some of the ones that like you might
know, some you might not. I'm gonna start off with
instrumentals. So again, that was a Wyndham
Hill. It was angels we have heard on
high. Very lovely.
This one is Trans-siberian Orchestra.
(07:19):
Yes. Have you seen them in concert?
No. Oh, I've saw them in concert.
Did you? That's it.
We'll talk about it after. Here.
I hear one of our holiday. Favorites and I'm pretty sure
this is a live recording so theyrecord this live.
All right, let's take a listen to one of our holiday favorites
here on the vinyl curriculum. So they put on a pretty
(07:52):
impressive show. Yeah, I was honestly a little
disappointed when I saw them because I was like, Oh yeah, I
know them. I know some of their hits.
Right. They used to do the the show,
the light show over at the Promenade in Bolingbrook.
Not sure if you ever once saw that with a generous Christmas
tree. Very impressive.
(08:13):
And it was a whole album. And all this stuff related back
to the Christmas album from the trans-siberian orchestra.
And so I was like, Oh yeah, I know some of the songs.
I probably only knew about 80% of the songs made or only about
20% of the songs. I'm sorry.
So a lot of the other songs werejust bad.
(08:35):
Like I was not didn't like them at all.
And I, you know, probably because they were so slow.
But I mean, they had some very impressive visuals.
So if I remember, maybe when we're editing this, we can
insert some of those videos now that we can do that because we
have video mode, but. Where'd you see them?
At the Allstate Arena, so the seats there, I don't know if
(08:57):
when the last time you were at the Allstate Arena was very
small seats and I am not what you call a small human being.
So it was a little tight, as it were.
Well, so you have the issue withthe legs.
I have the issue with legs and the butt.
So it gets really tight for me. Yeah.
So the United Center up top. Oh yeah, terrible.
(09:20):
Yeah, good old UC. So I, you know, but the, the
visuals and all that stuff, veryimpressive.
They brought, I want to say I don't remember how many pieces
the orchestra was, but a very large orchestra onto stage with
them, which was very impressive. And you know, probably the only
time, one of the only times I'llsee a full blown orchestra on
(09:43):
stage. But I don't know.
That's a good thing that I'm glad I did it once, but I don't
think I need to see him again. I think I would get tired of
this after a while. After a few songs is I don't
need unless visually I'm if they're occupying my time.
OK, good. Are we grading these things or
we're just playing? I don't know.
I think we could grade. We could.
(10:04):
I mean, you like them? I like that song.
Yeah, that's why that's all I'm doing.
I'm not doing that. What do you think of that?
Song I give it an AI think. Big fan of that specific
trans-siberian orchestra song. Not going to say all of them,
but the people know. The people know.
Another one I like is the Charlie Brown Christmas Special
music and there's a song on there and instrumental Christmas
(10:28):
time is here, but I'm not playing that version.
Remember we talked about Krungbin or Krungbin?
Krungbin or Krungbin? Like the dustbin?
Logan we had a 5 minute conversation about how do you
pronounce this group? It was when we were doing the
collaborations and Krugman, and they were instrumental and they
were from Texas. Yeah, you know, I forgot my
(10:51):
notes today. I I'm all I feel like I don't.
Have it should be up here in your brain.
I'm 60 and I can remember that. There's not a lot of, I have a
lot of, I have thoughts and ideas in here.
So I, you know, there's, I've got things that I'm thinking
about on a regular basis that I need to.
This is Christmas Time is here from Krugman.
And I think you'll you'll know the song, but I think you'll
even recognize the sound from them.
(11:15):
Now we're going to have it play for a few minutes before you
have to to really turn it up. But let's see if it's the sound.
They sang with Leon Bridges and it was a collaboration and
they're just kind of guitarist and they were from Texas.
So we did this whole conversation.
Maybe this is this is Krung Ben.Krung Ben or Krung Ben, I don't
remember. Reminds me of like a vacuum
(11:37):
cleaner. I don't know why Krungbin.
Krungbin makes me sound like think of a dustbin and then
dustbin. I think of a vacuum cleaner.
Probably because it sucks, but you know.
OK, let's turn it up. Logan, that was bad.
(12:04):
Does that you recognize that sound?
I do, yeah. Christmas time is here.
That's the song I'm saying. Do you recognize the sound of
Krungbin or Krungbin? Not at all, no, not even a
little bit. Like on a scale of 1 to 10 and
recognition, that would be abouta -17 like, I just don't,
there's nothing there that's striking A chord with me.
(12:25):
And I also, I don't appreciate your facial expression, like the
disappointment that I can see inyour face.
Well, I mean, it wasn't that long ago, but we, we like I
said, we spent 5 minutes on this.
I think that was that was a longtime ago, Jim.
That was years, millennia ago. What?
Do you give that? I mean, it's a recognizable
(12:47):
tune. Yeah.
And I don't. I mean I don't dislike it.
I like their version of It's Different.
That's what I'm saying. If I'm going to like a holiday
Christmas song, it's someone's got to do something different to
it or it's got to be unique. Like if if it's going to be
something though that we've heard a million times, you got
to do something that makes it special, right?
And they have a sound that I like so.
I give it AB plus I think. I don't know if that's a
(13:09):
material but like some of the other ones on this list because
I have seen the list and the list.
Is maybe you didn't. Probably some good ones.
Oh, that reminds me. Oh, we had a really big weekend
this past weekend. We did.
Several things happened #1 the Bears won.
Oh, they beat Cleveland Browns. Now they're back in the well for
(13:31):
NFNFLCNFC Norris. I see right of that.
OK, this is the week before Christmas, by the way, for
people who are confused. Another big thing that happened
this weekend. Oh, all right.
The coldest The coldest weather in Chicago?
It was -2° in his first coldest weather in 12 years.
Oh. And there was some what was that
other thing? Oh, there was that big salad
(13:52):
dressing, recall. Did you hear about that?
They had foreign objects were found, salad dressing and all in
Chicagoland. Oh, Hidden Valley Ranch was one
of them. Well, I oh, OK.
And then there was a little thing called a graduation,
though. Yeah, someone someone graduated
with their MB A. I don't know.
(14:15):
I don't know who that. Was four point O, Yes, thank
you. There was a tie of people with
Four Point O, but the faculty members yes awarded Logan the.
What the the ultimate award of awards, Thank you, which is
Student Excellence Award. Award of student excellence that
was given to one person and one person only.
(14:37):
And I definitely didn't rig the voting at all.
Well, you just. Yeah, you buddied up with the
teacher. Is that is that sell?
Promised to take video of them and make them look good or
something. Well, no, it was, but
congratulations to you on that. That was a it's a big deal.
Thank you. I didn't have a four point O
when I got my master's. I had AI was telling you I had
(14:59):
AB plus in networking. I see.
And I was so angry because we were learning about IBM
mainframes and like stuff that wasn't even, this is in the
early 2000. It wasn't even relevant then and
I was having to try to learn andI ended up getting AB plus and I
was so upset. Well now that I have my masters,
I can do such dignified things as dress up as Buddy the Elf and
(15:22):
video myself talking to a Co worker that's dressed as the
Grinch. Yeah, about various holiday
songs. Yeah, I mean, it's a dream come
true, I know. That is, I stayed.
I stayed up at night during gradschool thinking about, you know
what, what I'm going to do. The first thing that I'm going
to do is talk with another man in a room by ourselves about
(15:46):
some of our favorite Christmas albums.
Yep. Well, I, it's, it's something
you've earned, So I'm so proud of you.
All right, so now we're going toswitch over to to words.
All right, sure. You know who Dolly Parton is,
right? Yes, Dollywood, this Have you
been a Dolly? No, you know I haven't.
(16:08):
I went to Opryland when there was an Opryland and I've been to
Pigeon. No, I've been to Gatlinburg.
Before, but I don't know, I don't know why Dolly Parton, I
mean, she just owns a theme park.
Why is she also sings? It's her neck of the woods and I
think she makes appearances, butyeah, it's like it's about her.
Well, you've been there. It's supposed to.
(16:29):
Don't they have like a house that kind of well?
I've driven through it, but I I'm just like, I know that it
was named after her, but like for in terms of like.
No, she's involved. Yeah, she's involved.
Well, right, I would have. It's called Dollywood, but
you're. But she also sings, is what
you're saying? I think she has sung there
before. I mean, she's up there, so I
don't know if she goes there. It's not like.
(16:50):
She's so did she sing this album?
I I guess I'm not because she what?
Are you talking about? I mean, she's in the real estate
business, right? What?
Are you talking about? Dolly Parton, That's what you're
talking about, right? Why is she in the real estate
business? Well, she owns Dollywood.
Yeah. Yeah, but so so then but you're
saying she also? Thank you, She also because I
(17:14):
need to be able to respond. But she also though, you're
saying she also sing the songs? That's what that's what I'm
trying to understand. She sings more songs than she
has in real estate. Are you setting me up for a joke
or you just being bad? I know I don't.
I don't, but I don't know Dolly Parton though.
You know who Dolly Parton is? Yeah, she owns Dollywood.
(17:35):
That's what I'm saying, OK. We're moving on.
You're pissing me off. OK, This is called Hard Candy
Christmas. Oh God.
All right. But we, you know, we can let me
look, we can go 17 seconds before we have to go live.
Oh, all right, 17 seconds. That's how many seconds was in
the Blackhawks last game betweengoals that won them the Stanley
(17:55):
Cup. But anyway.
No, that was a fascinating fact.Fun facts here on the vinyl
curriculum as part of our Holiday Special 2025.
Hopefully you're enjoying yourself.
I'm enjoying being dressed as Buddy, right?
I'm the Grinch. Yeah, you are.
Maybe I'll move somewhere. Maybe I'll get a Dolly Parton.
(18:26):
Fine and dandy, like a hard candy Christmas.
You know what that means? I don't.
Know if I want to know what it is?
Hard candy Christmas, like when you didn't have a lot of money,
candy was kind of cheap, and that's why kids would kind of
get hard candy. And so, yeah.
Like if you ever lapped in gobstopper, you could.
In a weird kind of way, maybe, but that she didn't write that.
(18:51):
I found that out this morning. She did not write that song.
That's from AI knew this was from a musical called The Best
Little Whorehouse in Texas. All right, and.
So she, I, I knew it was from there, but I thought she had,
she had written it and then theyput it in there.
But it's the opposite. She took that song and.
I see. I love that.
I just love Dolly Dolly and my mother-in-law is a huge Dolly
(19:13):
fan. She wrote how like thousands of
songs, right? Like that was we were just
talking about that today, how people like can write all sorts
of books. Like you can write and write and
write all these books. How are people that create or
like that musically inclined to write thousands, literally
(19:35):
thousands of songs? And meanwhile I can't hold the
tune to save my life. Like I don't some people are
just so. You do have some skills, I don't
know what they are, but whateveryou your skill sets are, you
just can keep doing it and that's what they do for a
living. I see.
All right, what do you give hardcandy?
Christmas. Remember, that's Dolly.
You can't. You can't be techie.
(19:56):
I think I'll give it ABI. Think just a regular B.
And when? When am I listening to that
song? If it's if you're listening to
Lite FM, your Christmas music, it comes on, Especially if you
listen to SiriusXM, like the country Christmas, it would come
on. Yeah, you're going to be more in
the middle of your video, friend.
By the way, you're you're sneaking out.
(20:18):
You're sneaking out of it. This is a shot here.
Your commentaries are kind of making me doze off a little bit,
but Speaking of country. Oh, do what?
Do you know about not the state Alabama, but.
Wayne Newton what? What?
Wayne Newton I. Always thought he was a little
creepy. He is creepy.
His mustache was a little too. Whatever, he is a little creepy.
(20:39):
But no. What about the the group
Alabama? Oh, not a musical.
No, that's Oklahoma. No, that's.
Oklahoma, Yeah. Anyway, I don't know.
I don't know Alabama. You do.
No, OK. Well, this is Alabama.
They had an album called AlabamaChristmas.
(21:00):
I'm from Mississippi so this wasa huge hit back in the 80s.
So. But you're not from Alabama.
I'm I'm closer to Alabama than Iam any other state.
We were like maybe 30 minutes from Alabama.
But you were in Mississippi. Yeah, that's true.
(21:20):
All right. All right, anyway, this is
called Christmas in Dixie. Oh, maybe I have heard this so I
think. You've heard it.
All right, let's take a listen here on the vinyl curriculum,
Dixie. Christmas in Dixie.
Oh, sure. By now, in New York City, it's
snowing in the Pines. Whoa.
(21:47):
What's that? For I don't know.
My favorite part of that, he says in Jackson, Ms. We used to
record like rewind and play thatover and over on my cassette.
Why? When you're in Mississippi, you
got to look for things to do. Well, I guess.
But you didn't know that one. No, I did not really thought I
would. Then I thought.
(22:07):
You liked country music though? Not slow, put you to sleep,
night night country like I don'tlike.
That I bet you're AB. You didn't say it out loud, but
I bet your favorite song is rocking around Christmas tree.
I bet it is because it's upbeat.I don't, I don't appreciate.
Does Taylor have any Christmas albums out?
(22:27):
That's a good question. I don't know, Does she?
Well, you you should know. Tay Tay in a good way.
All right, what do you want to give Christmas to Dixie?
B minus. You might be like some letters
from. I feel like I can't.
I feel like I can't give anything lower than AB minus for
Christmas just because as well out of principle.
(22:50):
That's a good that's probably true.
Out of principle, I can't. Well, good, because you're
probably going to. In the real world, you would
have given this next one a really low grade.
Now you know who I love? Who is my favorite
singer-songwriter of all time? Michael Jackson, First of all,
(23:10):
no, it's a female from the 70s. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
It is it is it? Starts with a Joni.
Joni Mitchell. Thank you.
It starts with a Joni. Well, I didn't.
We didn't have time here. So Joni Mitchell wrote a song
(23:30):
called River. Yeah, we've listened to River.
Did we? No, no we didn't.
But it's everybody. And their mother has recorded
this song. The Indigo Girls, James Taylor.
Obviously Joni Mitchell did it. This is Sarah McLachlan now.
Do you remember Sarah McLachlan?Do you know her?
(23:51):
Nah, the name sounds familiar. I don't know who she is.
Sarah, this is what I think of Sarah McLachlan.
What I remember is she was one of the founders of Lilith Fair.
You know what Lilith Fair? Lilith Fair was?
No, it was kind of like Lollapalooza, but for women
groups like women. So it was like, I can't remember
who all was in it. It was Sarah McLachlan, the
(24:13):
Indigo Girls. Well, I was playing, we're going
to Google it. But they they came to.
I feel like you're supposed to know this coming in too.
It was a long time ago they cameto Tinley.
It was like in your childhood, which was also a long time.
Ago this is I was married with children Tinley, you're dating
yourself even more I'm 60 years old what are you going to say?
(24:34):
But anyway, this is the one where I was at whatever it was
called in Tinley and I was in the men's bathroom and there
were so many women there that they just took over.
And so the guys would just kind of stand at the urinal as close
as they could. And the women were just coming
in and using all the the stalls because they were, the lines
(24:55):
were so big for the women and there were there were so few men
there because it was Lilith. Fair.
I don't know why you felt it wasnecessary to include that
factoid. Well, you know how you set the
stage? Like I don't know where I'd be
listening to that I what part I was.
You set the stage, not set set the restroom.
What I. Was I set the stage, I'm trying
to give you the lore of me goingto see Lilith Fair.
(25:17):
So you have to tell me what it was like in the the restroom.
That was a a memory I have, yeah.
OK. I had a memory and listen when
I'm not when you're. That old I That's when you
still. Haven't those for these
memories? Yeah.
All right, let's see on this one.
We've got 18 seconds for you to figure out what you're doing.
I'm hitting play now. OK, so does that mean we just
(25:37):
start counting to 18? Yeah, but anyway, Sarah
McLachlan, this whole album is called Winter Song is a great
Christmas album. OK, I'm still not seeing any
audio coming through here, so there we go.
So, Sarah McLachlan, can you spell that for me?
(25:57):
No. THAT.
That that was my. Please don't ever do that.
All right, Goodbye. Oh.
Down trees they're putting up reindeer, singing You don't
(26:29):
remember that one? No.
Did we listen to that before? No, but the Song River.
How would I remember? It then it's the song.
It's been around. Like I said, everybody and their
mothers recorded it. I disagree because I haven't
heard it so I well. Yeah, by the way, that sound you
were just making sounded like Herman Munster from The Monster.
(26:54):
That's my Larry David laugh. That's how you need to Google
Herman Munster, because that's who it sound like.
So Lilith there. I looked it up.
It was Sheryl Crow, Jewel, FionaApple, Erika by Badu, but they
didn't say Indigo Girls but theywere there too.
It kind of hurts. Who is this?
Erika Badu badu. Badu Badu.
(27:16):
Scooby Dooby Doo. Yeah, almost.
I don't know her. Erika Badu.
BADU It was like a name ERY it'snot real.
H Oh, wow. So what do you give Sarah?
B minus I knew you'd do that. B minus And if it wasn't
Christmas, you'd do something. Else it was.
It would be lower if it wasn't Christmas, but I'm in the holly
(27:38):
jolly spirit today dressed as Buddy the Elf.
Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?
Buddy the Elf, What's your favorite color?
Is that from the movie? Yes.
Have you not seen the movie? I have, but I don't remember
word for word. OK, All right.
Well, you're that was my disappointment of the day.
(28:01):
The first of many, I guess not. Yeah, well, I would.
I would tell the the audience, go listen to Winter Song.
My wife's not a huge fan of it because it is kind of Moody.
It's not an upbeat and it's not all, like I said, it's more
holiday like. That song isn't really
Christmas. She says it.
It is Christmas time and she broke up with her boyfriend and
(28:25):
she wishes she had a river that she could skate away to get
away. Sure, sure.
Skating away, I guess, is wintery.
Yeah. Like hockey.
Like hockey? It's coming on Christmas.
They're cutting down trees, singing of reindeer.
Who's? Cutting down a Christmas tree on
Christmas. It said it's coming on
Christmas, mean Christmas is around the corner.
(28:49):
It's coming on Christmas. Please stop saying.
It's coming on Christmas. They're cutting down trees.
They didn't say this morning is Christmas anyway.
Please, please, please stop saying that.
Please, please stop saying. Just like we went to McDonald's
today and he told me that this was his hometown McDonald's
(29:11):
literally five times. Well I was I wanted you to and
you refuse to acknowledge that statement.
We went to go get Mcribs. By the way, Jim has never had a
Mcrib before and I I try to average 1 Mcrib a day when it is
back. What I try to average.
How's your cholesterol? It's great.
(29:31):
I have. Well, actually this past I've
noticed some growth in the tummyarea.
So I had to I had to lay off thethe average of 1 a day.
So but no, they're delicious andI don't want to know where that
what part of the animal they come from.
I don't know if they come from areal animal.
I don't care. It's tasty.
(29:52):
Anyway, I don't eat regular ribsbecause they're on a bone.
You think I'm gonna eat some make believe ribs?
I actually try to stick to the four elf main food groups.
Did you know that? Did you know that candy, candy
canes, candy corns, and syrup. The four main food groups for
Elfs, ladies and gentlemen. Anyway, OK, we've got a couple
(30:13):
more songs for you here on the holiday edition of the vinyl
curriculum. This I wondered if if we were a
vinyl, would we be a green and red swirled?
I've always I've I've always thought that if I was going to
be a vinyl, like if I myself wasgoing to be reincarnated as a
vinyl record, I'd want to be a green and a red one.
But anyway, what is the next song that we're listening to?
(30:34):
Don't respond to that. Please don't respond to that
next song we're going to. Listen to processing that.
So this is another one of my favorite people,
singer-songwriter. Is it me, Mindy Smith?
Oh, well, close. What the heck was that?
That was weird it. Was my watch Mindy Smith, I
thought. It was swimming.
I thought it was a get out of the building kind of thing.
(30:58):
Saw her in concert is Shuba's inChicago with my wife and I think
she was high because it was not a very good concert.
OK. Anyway, I love her music.
Though this is information that doesn't have to be included.
I'm setting the stage of Mindy Smith.
OK, But anyway this is a she dida song with this guy named Sad
(31:19):
Cockrol which the sad thing is sorry.
What was his name? Sad Cockrol and when you.
Fat. His first name was Fad.
Fad THAD. OK.
Well, you don't have to worry about it because when you see it
on Spotify or whatever, they don't even mention him.
But it's a it's an obvious duet.So kind of I never, I never
(31:41):
understood that. Why?
Why do they not give people credit for singing in a song?
Sure. Fad Cock fad fad.
Fad problem. Thaddeus.
Short for Thaddeus. All right, so we got 13 seconds
to get ready for your stuff. What are we?
What are we getting ready for this song?
OK. You have 13 seconds to hush.
(32:04):
Just go. We don't need to hear you
anymore. Just go.
I like to hear myself though. I actually listen to a.
Turn it up. So is Thad a female?
(32:27):
No, no. 'Cause.
I hear a male voice. Stop it.
He was singing Falsetta. Oh, not even.
He wasn't even singing Falsetta really.
He just has a high voice. Oh.
OK, I love that it's unique and it's Are You.
It's a original song she wrote. That's what I like about it.
Her whole album is wonderful. Is she the one who sings that
(32:49):
one song that goes I will go down with?
No ship that was Dido or something.
No, she did a remake of Jolene. That's how she got her start
because she there was like a a Dolly of, you know, people were
doing their songs and she did itand Dolly liked it and said
(33:11):
something about it and that kindof got her going.
She's sang a song called Come toJesus.
That was a hit of her. Anyway, I love Mindy Smith.
What do you think? I mean it's not bad, I'll give
that one ABI think it's a solid.BI think it could have been
(33:31):
higher. Well, I think you could have
chosen some better songs to be honest with you.
Well. This I'm trying to educate you
on why. Is this why is everything always
about educating me? How come you do?
You think with the whole premiseof this dad com podcast.
Remember, it's vinyl curriculum Parentheses educating Logan in
(33:52):
parentheses I. Don't I?
I just feel like I'm being attacked here for not knowing
things, and I've gotten a lot offeedback from people about the
first season of the vinyl curriculum and there's a lot of
hate towards Logan. Have you noticed this?
There's a lot of people who think that I am just an absolute
(34:13):
buffoon. And.
And they're right, but I just, Idon't appreciate them.
You know, have you ever met people who are very smart?
Well, I've met. Myself but have no common sense
that is you no, obviously if youcan make have a four point O in
(34:35):
a master's program, but you can't make some of these simple
connections. Yes, you're one of those people.
Well, actually, And there's a place for you in this world
there. Is there is there is there are
people, places for brainiacs like myself, like the smartest
person I ever met. He was an engineer, went to
college for engineering, and he was trying to tell us about how
(34:56):
to get to this. We were trying to go to an ice
rink, and he was trying to tell us about how he gets to the ice
rink. He's like, yeah, I just go on
that fast Rd. The fast Rd.
What are you talking about? Fast Rd.
You know that one Rd. where everyone goes fast?
Also known as the Expressway or freeway or Interstate.
Any of those are acceptable answers, but the fast Rd.
(35:17):
Really. So at least I know what the
Expressway is called. Well, this this Count our
blessings. In yes, yes, all right.
I only have one more song and then you're going to have a
song. Oh, yes, yes, yes.
Now this one I think you're going to like though, because we
we talked about this guy Seth MacFarlane yes.
So Seth is kind of it's kind of interesting because he went to
(35:40):
college like to be an illustrator, like didn't you
know? And then he.
Created Family Guy and American Dad and The Cleveland Show that
nobody watched and got cancelled.
He did he do, Ted. He did Ted, yes, he created Ted.
He was in Ted too. Yeah, but he's got the voice of
Ted, amazing voice. And this is another one.
(36:01):
So let me recap the albums. Yes, Alabama Christmas, The
whole album is good. Winter Song by Sarah McLachlan.
Sorry, sorry. You're on camera now I.
Know I can't yawn anything. That is rude winter song by
(36:21):
Sarah McLachlan, my holiday, Mindy Smith and then the the
fourth album that I recommend people listen to is called
holiday for swing and it's Seth MacFarlane.
So this is see if well, you see if you know this one.
I don't think your family grew sang this growing up, but turn
(36:43):
it up and let's hear it. It starts off a little weird
because he's trying to fool you to think it's some other song,
but let's see if you recognize this song.
Let's listen to Sup McFarland vinyl curriculum.
Hey you. Is the thing to say.
(37:19):
Yeah, that wasn't actually the song that I was thinking it was
going to be. Why are you looking like that?
I'm just curious what's he has the whole album?
So why did you think that? You read my mind.
What? Or you saw the name and you
didn't realize Melika, He he Maka was what you were fixing to
hear. You saw the playlist.
Yeah, I did see the playlist. What do you think it was?
(37:41):
I just I don't saw it mine. No, no, well, I don't.
I just when you were telling me about it, I guess I didn't put
two and two together. You were telling me about it
yesterday, but like I I wasn't putting.
I was thinking more of like a. Frankston.
Like, yeah, like a winter Wonderland, New York, NY kind of
thing, you know? And they're the, if you listen
(38:01):
to the album, like I said, he's got a little bit of everything
there. None of them originals, but he
takes and does a really nice well.
It's for Swing, so you can hear you've got the orchestra in the
background and a lot of them areupbeat, but there's some sad
ones and some some quiet ones too.
Yeah, no, I mean, I'm I, we usedto my aunt for a long time lived
in Hawaii. So this was a, this was a family
(38:23):
favorite really for the, the, mymom's side of the family.
So we used to listen to that song quite frequently.
Wow, I stand corrected because Iwas just saying so.
Did you ever go to Hawaii? No Nicole would like to go there
for our honeymoon though, so. Grandma.
Grandma lived in Hawaii. No, no.
My. Cousin or my my grandpa's
(38:46):
sister, so my great aunt and so they they travelled there a lot
and then she moved to Phoenix, AZ where it is very hot.
Yeah, from paradise to. To desert.
Desert. Yeah.
Well, she, she lived here. So she lived in the freezing
Arctic that is the Windy City. Four Seasons.
(39:06):
Four Seasons, then moved to humid living on a volcano in
Hawaii 1. Season.
Dry, you know, microwave heat outside, so living in the oven.
Yeah, we live in Four Seasons, so yes, they're one of them is
cold. Yes, I want to go a minus for
Mele Kalikimaka. All right, well.
(39:29):
The same merry. Christmas who you, by the way, I
should tell we, you know, we're going to cut off during the
singing and we're going to show other graphics.
But while that was going on, Logan and his elf suit was doing
some amazing dancing. No, it was really amazing with
those little ELF shoes you have on.
I impressive. I fully commit to my character
(39:53):
here as the elf. So yeah, I traveled through the
seven levels of the candy cane forest to get here, so.
You have the most random memories of the most stupid
things, but you know them by heart.
Yeah, it's like my son with the office.
He can tell you anything. And everything about the office.
I like the Office not as much asELF, but.
(40:14):
Not as much as how he I'm telling you he watched it 20
something times all the way through over his life.
So. OK well from my grades you were
OK. AB plus BB minus B minus, BA
minus. Not terrible.
Yeah, no, I know. And now we got.
I'm always, I'm always a reasonable guy.
Here, Jimmy will find out your name.
(40:36):
What did you call me, Jimmy? Do I need to call you your name?
Logan. No, I can't say it.
Your nickname. The nickname that your mommy
gave you. I won't do it.
Yeah, my official name is Jimmy.Yeah, I didn't know that.
See the things that we learn about each other while doing a
podcast together. And and then my son's name is
Jimmy, and we call him Trey. And why?
(40:59):
And why do we call him Trey? Because he didn't like being
called Jimmy. I don't know.
No, you know this. He's the third.
He's I was, I was going to say the 5th.
That would be quint quit quints, something like that.
I see. All right, so this is your song.
Do you want to set it up? Well, there's a lore attached to
(41:20):
it. I certainly.
Can we so this The only reason Iwanted to play this song was
because we Nicole and I got engaged last year at the
Rockefeller Christmas tree whilethis song was playing.
So I feel like this is. Well, it wasn't playing that
way, it just happened to be playing.
It just happened to be playing so so this now every time I hear
it, I think of that, it brings me back to that moment.
(41:45):
You know, some have considered it a big mistake for Nicole.
I did not. I think she that was the best
decision that she's ever made inher life, certainly the best
decision I ever made. But.
It's too late now. She's She'd publicly be shamed
if she drop you like a hot cake.Bless it.
Anyway, All right, so you got 20seconds to finish your story.
(42:06):
Yeah, so this, it's across the street from the Macy's, the same
Macy's that's in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
And they play music very loudly in the streets through the
streets of New York. And it was pouring rain outside
with some beautiful Christmas lights.
I think we just take a listen. You get you get the vibe now.
OK, Set the stage. Setting the stage.
(42:37):
The horns make it. They do, They really do.
I I think that's why it's stuck in my head like glue.
But. It wouldn't because it put you
in a. This song became part of your.
Lore Yes yes. And this was the first time I
heard this song was last year. I you're saying that they play
at it on the radio? Yeah, you just don't listen to
much radio during Christmas because some of these songs.
(43:01):
I don't listen to a lot or as a radio person, I am sad to say I
don't listen to a lot of radio anymore.
But just as I listen to this music in the car, but it's just
from my phone, you know? Well, because you can control
it, right? Control the narrative.
And I'm a control freak. Are you now?
Yeah, I give that one. Unlike you, I'm going to.
(43:21):
I'm going to give that a becauseI do like that song.
Great. I wanted to list some of the
other songs I like. Oh.
All right, I like Somewhere in My Memory, which is the theme
from Home Alone. It's instrumental.
Oh, I like that one a lot. I like Do They Know It's
Christmas by Band-Aid? Remember that one?
No. What do you know?
(43:45):
Do they know it's Christmas? Do they know it's Christmas?
Yeah. OK, that was, remember they all
these famous people got togetherand they yeah, yeah, yeah.
Did a fundraiser I like Where Are You Christmas from the
Grinch movie when that little girl sings it, but Faith Hill
sings her version and I like that a lot.
There's a song from the 70s called Merry Christmas Darling
(44:05):
from The Carpenters, which are cheesy as I'll get out in one of
these days when we do 70s, I want to do cheesy music and I
will play a Carpenter song for sure and.
Get the cheese grater out and we'll be ready.
Coldplay has a great song calledChristmas Lights.
Skip Ewing, my wife's favorite country singer of all time, has
a song called It Wasn't His Child, which is amazing.
(44:27):
And then there's another good jazz, well, jazzy album.
You know who Ella Fitzgerald is or was from the 60s seventies.
She would do lots of scat stuff.Anyway, Sleigh Sleigh Ride was a
great song that she did. Yeah, I like the original theme
to Howard Grinch Stole Christmas.
(44:49):
You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. You really are a heel.
Why do you keep turning that down?
I. Didn't you just pressed the
button twice? Press it again.
I had such an int that I hit it twice.
Yeah, well, So what do you thinkof this video thing?
(45:10):
It's interesting. We'll see how it looks.
Hopefully people enjoyed it. Worth.
It's worth the extra effort. Let be sure to let us know in
the comments section down below what you thought or let us know.
You can let Jim know or me, I don't know.
I'd be curious to know. I think our intent is to do one
more our holiday into the holiday.
(45:32):
You know, we've got all these Spotify raps, your Apple Music
gave you your top songs, we havesome stats from the podcast
itself, how many listeners, favorite episodes, stuff like
that. So I think we just want to do
one of those. And it'll be another chance for
us to make some adjustments to the video thing to see.
And then hopefully Season 2 willbe a little bit more polished
(45:52):
and then we'll just continue what we traditionally were
doing, right? That's the plan.
Yeah, I think that sounds good. I expect more from you.
Know that now that you have a master's.
Yes, yes, and I should provide more other than just the
entertainment value of to this podcast because that people
TuneIn people TuneIn to see whatI'm going to say.
(46:16):
Thank you very. Much they do.
I've heard more than one person say they were trying to drop,
they wanted to drive themselves into a tree.
I've heard two different people say that, and I've thought it.
So that's three. And it's because of me.
So one of our super fans, by theway, is Haley, and she's the one
that said that. The other OK.
Well, we want to thank you for listening, thank you for tuning
(46:38):
into this video version of the Vinyl Curriculum.
Hopefully you enjoyed it as muchas we did recording it.
We had fun. Merry Christmas to everyone and
hopefully we'll get to talk one more time before the new year.
But you know, Jim's going to putout this playlist of all these
songs that we listen to today. So if you're looking for
something to listen to when you're having people over
(46:59):
cutting your Christmas ham or whatever it is you might be
having on Christmas, you can listen to Goose.
Goose, I want to show my shirt. What's that?
That was my goose noise. My.
Shirt isn't that. Nice.
Oh yeah. This is how Logan makes me feel.
It's not as nice as my Grinch ormy elf outfit.
(47:20):
Be sure to follow the Vinyl curriculum on Facebook and
Instagram for a full image that we will see on Christmas.
For our beautiful Christmas postyou will see some of our outfits
so. And we did an official Christmas
card. Then an official Christmas card,
yes. So thank you very much for
tuning in and we will catch you all on the next one.
Bye.
