Alright, welcome back in to the Work Western Podcast. Kevin Harrison here, got Jed Blackwell, my co-host. We're bringing you everything about that work western lifestyle. Whether you are interested in the way a work boot works, or whether you are looking for the latest fashion trend out in the industry, or whether you're wanting to know what's going on with country music and the latest concerts. But today, Jed Blackwell, we're going to be talking about a new brand. out there, but it's a new brand that we actually carry in our chain of retail stores. But we're going to really talk about this particular one, and it is Tecovas. Jed Blackwell, what do you know about Tecovas?
I know we've had them in for a couple of months. I know that they're extremely fashion forward. I know that they are. When somebody comes in and says, I'm just looking for a pair of cowboy boots, that's usually where we're going to direct them because. If you look it up in the dictionary, that's where they are. They're cowboy boots, but they're not just that either. We'll get to that part here in a second. And I think looking at numbers, they've been pretty popular in our stores. We started out kind of a pilot program in a couple of stores, and now they're everywhere. So I think they've been doing pretty well.
Yeah, and, you know, it's interesting. Those of you that are familiar with the Tecovas brand, you know that forever they were just on their own website, and then they had, you know, just had some unique little boutique Tecovas stores, you know, just around. Originally, you would not see them everywhere. And they made the decision that they wanted to approach some specific and unique retailers around the country to be able to carry their brand. You know, you won't find these everywhere. A lot of the places that you go that are these big, huge national boot chains or other things, you won't find the Tecovas brand there. And you won't find them at really discounters or, you know, really, really smaller. little places you're going to find them. Kind of this unique, you know, the retailers that I met. I went out to Dallas and actually went out to Austin, you know, where Tecovas is. That's where their headquarters is. Went out there and was able to interact with some of the other retailers. And they're a lot like us. And, you know, so the Tecovas brand is one that they take a lot of pride in maintaining kind of the, what's the right word? I don't know what the word I'm looking at.
Standard that they're looking to maintain. And to that point, they seem to be willing to go out of their way to help us maintain that brand standard too. We've got a lot of fixtures available to us. We've got neon signs available, a lot of things. We're actually, you know, not to get ahead of you, but I know one store here in Mauldin, we're planning on a Tecovas boutique area. I don't know if that's the plan for all the stores or not, but Tecovas is helping to make that happen with the fixtures that they're providing with the neon signs, with some brand support
Yeah it is you know that they do have an expectation and if you when you go out and visit there I had the opportunity a couple months ago to go out Austin Texas to their their flagship store and and man they just do it right they do the whole merchandising right they they really make the brand you know make it special and and make that whole something that we've talked about that whole buyer and shopper experience make it something really good and and that's appreciated about them is they do have that i like what you said brand standard that they they have you know and interestingly you know they they have um you know it's not just when you talk about that cowboy cowgirl boot just how comfortable they are and how good looking they are now they've branched off into the work area as well so we're you know we're the work western podcast so we're we're covering those western styles but some of you that are listening some of our listeners and viewers are they're not even going to be familiar that these men they have legitimate, safety-toe, waterproof boots that you can wear out on an industrial site.
That's one of the things I wanted to talk about because we are filming and recording here in Mauldin this morning, and I've got a little insight into the workings of the Mauldin store. We have mobile boot trucks that will go out to sites, and you'll hear a lot more about those in a coming episode, I'm sure. But the other day we were going out to an account that needed pull-on, Western look safety toe boots. And the decision was made, you know what, let's load those Tecovas on the truck and see what happens. I think we sold eight pairs. Yeah. I mean, it's the response to the work ones, even more so than the Western, has been phenomenal because they are. a fashion-forward work boot with all the performance features at a comparable price to a lot of the other pull-ons that we have.
Yeah, they are. And, you know, what we've seen, the feedback we've been getting from our customers is that it's a, not only is it a very comfortable boot and looks good, but the durability is there. You know, the question that you would get, it's like, oh, well, can we really wear these in a hardcore work environment? Because they're Tecovas. Right. You know, you're not expecting that. And, again, the Tecovas, when I was in Dallas in January, that's when you have these shows. You have these big Western shows. One's in January. One's in August. And during that show, that's when they were just launching their work, the real work side of Tecovas. And so we've been able to get some feedback from people. And it was, you know, some of the hard sell was, you know, are these going to be, are these just going to be good looking boot? Is this a Tacoma that they've just said, Hey, you can go work in these. Right. Or is it a legitimate work boot with the work technology that, you know, some of these longer standing brands have. And, and what we've seen is, yeah, they do. They've got the same, you know, they got same ability for the waterproofing, you know, the obviously, you know, OSHA sets the standards for ANSI, all that stuff, the technical stuff I'm not going to get into, but, but it's a very, very, it's been a very durable, something that you can use in that really tough work environment. And, you know, and that's. We've talked about this before. That's the biggest growing segment of footwear out in this market is that work. One of our other. brands kind of they kind of coined this for that work western which again it looks like a western boot got that same kind of profile and looks but it's made to work in right
I know back to the Western ones, they're. They're beautiful, first of all. They're gorgeous boots, men's, women's, all of it. The highest quality, handmade. And you know how a boot store smells? The leather and that. I carried a pair of Tecovas around in my car for a couple days last week. I had a show. Not a show. I had a meeting that I was showing some folks some of the new things in the store, and I had a pair of Tecovas with me. And. It smelled like a new car. That leather just from one box of boots. They seem to be a fantastic brand. practical Practical applications, people who don't wear boots, people who aren't boot folks will put these on. Oh, man, I love those. I've got to take these home with me. We've got some garnet ones that our University of South Carolina folks are snapping up left and right. When I was showing those boots the other day, I took a ladies 12 with me because that's the least popular size. And Bonnie, our store manager here in Mauldin, wouldn't let me have another pair. She said, no, I might sell them. She said, I might sell those 12s. I'll just tell that lady they're on hold, take the 12s. So that's what I did.
Yeah, you know, you talk about how comfortable they are when you put them on. It's really, you can tell the difference in some of these boots. It's just when you put your, not putting your foot in them, but when you put your hand on the top of that boot to pick it up. and feel it. And it's a softer feel a boot that you taught that you took. It was that red Annie, the Scarlet, I believe the color and Annie is there. That's their number one selling boot for, for females and comes in a multitude of colors, but it is literally when you pick it up and hold it, it's just got that softness to it.
For you kids who like Kevin and I are when high school in the late eighties, early nineties, it feels like a bomber jacket for your feet.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that, that's a good, that's a good analogy. And, and, you know, and, and interestingly, the work, the work line is in that same, it's built on that same comfort, comfort standard. And it's just, it is, it just, it just feels like it's a little bit, the standard is just a little bit different, um, with those, with those boots. But yeah, you're right about that smell. I love, I love that smell of leather and, you know, whenever you, whenever you've got a room full of room full of boots and you just walk can just smell it it's uh that's a that's a pleasing smell right right around Christmas when we've got a new boot shipment in and they've just been put out and there's nobody in the store and it's about to get crazy i love walking in here about 8:15 and just kind of walking around that's right because that's that's what that is at that point
So what what is your favorite Tacoma boot we've got out there As a throwback to my time as a Jim Crockett Promotions wrestling fan when I was growing up, I like Dusty a lot. Dusty is good. I like the Dusty. I like the Dean because I prefer that ankle style.
And the Dusty. The Dusty is going to be like a – it's not a work boot. Right. But it is – it's built a little bit – you can tell it's built with a little bit more guts in it. It's more of a – it's more of one of those everyday type boots. You know, it's got a square toe on it, that kind of thing. They've got some real funky ones and fancy ones.
That's why I like it. I need a square toe. I need a little bit chunky heel. That's why I like that one.
Yeah, and that Dusty, not the Dusty, the Dean that you mentioned, the Dean's a little, you know, it's a little, like, comes about a quarter ways up, and it's got a zipper on the side. And I love that boot. Yeah, me too. That is my favorite one. And, you know, it just looks good. It's got the round toe. Most everything's square toe now. Gosh, and you go back, all these, the people that are listening to this will understand this, but you go back 15 years, 20 years, and you couldn't give away a square toe boot. Right. Because it looks so different. Yeah, everything was round toe. Everything was, you know, cutter toe, different. Man, five years ago, you couldn't give away a round toe boot. Right. Everything was square toe. So, you know, you're seeing some of those round toes come back, but that Dean is one that's got a round toe on it. It just gives you that. gives you that more traditional look but my goodness it is a comfortable boot it's got the zipper on it so you can get in and out of that thing really really quickly so those are those are two really good the dean's my favorite and then bonnie's got an ante and suede yeah um got those for her birthday and she's worn them
Well, she hasn't worn them much lately because it's rained every day for two weeks. But she wears them a good bit, and she loves those too.
Yeah, that's what my wife, she's got a pair of those. And, you know, I'm interested to see, you know, you've got the big ones. I've actually got some here with us, but you've got the taller ones. And it's funny, they all, Tecovas has got every. one that every style they've got, they give it a unique name. You've got the Annie, the Daisy, the Dean, the Dusty, all these things. Yeah, man, Tecovas, we're pumped up about having them. And we're going to do some other podcasts where we're going to have some of the leadership from Tecovas and talk to them about, you know, their story and talk more about their brand and what it means and that brand standard that you talked about, those kind of things. What else do you want to add about this brand of Tecovas?
I know you're going to see them here this week. Honestly, it's just all the things, just reinforcing all the things you've said. If I had to tell anybody anything, and they're not the most expensive boots we have in the store. But if I had to tell anybody anything, it's please don't let price deter you from looking at a pair of Tecovas because the quality is phenomenal. There are four or five things. Before I started working here. I was skeptical of brand name things, but we carry stuff that just does what it says it's going to do.
It does, and it ends up being cheaper.
Right, exactly.
And I remember learning this lesson of you can go to a discounter, to one of the big box stores, and you can get a cheap pair of boots. And you think that's cheaper. But you'll buy three pair. For every one pair, you buy at a reputable dealer like a Harrison's or others. And you end up, it's cheaper. Because you're having to buy three pair because they're so cheaply made. And if you'll invest, and again, just like with tires. I had somebody tell me one time about your car. The only thing that touches the ground is tires. So don't go cheap on the tires. Same thing with your feet. The only thing that touches the ground is your feet. So don't go cheap with your feet. if you're wanting to if you want to look good you're wanting to make a statement out there and again Tecovas is a it's very trendy you see these you see a lot of people Matthew McConaghey a lot of people like that you know they're they're involved in this Tecovas brand but if you're wanting on in a really good really really good quality boot you know Tecovas is a is a great option for you and you're right going to be out in Dallas we're recording this in august and we've got the the August trade shows going on. I'll be out there. We're going to be getting some more content. We're going to bring you some more things, bring you some shorts. And we're going to, we're actually going to review every single Tecovas boot that we carry to, to tell you about it, show it, show it to you, show it to you on, on people's feet.
