Meet the Host: Dr. Heather Putney — Founder and Executive Director of Transformative Neurotherapy

What happens when traditional therapy hits a wall? For Dr. Heather Putney, this question became the catalyst for a revolutionary approach to mental health. After founding Untethered Therapy in 2014, she noticed that despite using cutting-edge therapeutic modalities, some clients remained frustratingly "brain stuck." Rather than accepting this limitation, she dove back into her biology roots to find answers.

Dr. Putney's journey from aspiring veterinarian to pioneering neurotherapist reveals how unexpected paths often lead to breakthrough innovations. "I originally thought I was going to be a veterinarian," she shares, "but I felt redirected towards human psychology... it was more important to save families and that would have a longer legacy." This pivotal shift led her to establish Untethered Therapy, focusing initially on couples work before expanding into addiction and trauma recovery.

The founding of Transformative Neurotherapy came from Dr. Putney's determination to address healing at the physiological level. By researching neurofeedback and ultimately developing neuromodulation techniques, she created a holistic approach that complements traditional therapy by targeting the biological foundations of psychological challenges. Her refreshingly straightforward motivation? "To help people heal faster. I'm not a very patient person and I don't like suffering for myself, my kids, or anyone around me." This commitment to efficiency and relief drives her mission to help people reach their "highest and best selves" without unnecessary delay or struggle. Ready to experience what happens when biology meets psychology in your healing journey? Connect with Dr. Putney's team to discover how your brain can finally work for you instead of against you.

Hello, welcome everyone.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I'm Lila Carter, co-host and producer here in the
studio with Dr Heather Putney, founder and executive director
of Transformative Neurotherapy.
Dr Putney, how's it going?
It's going great.
Awesome Over the years you'vegrown a remarkable following.
However, some listeners mightnot be familiar with your full
journey, so let's take it fromthe top here.

(01:34):
Could you share a littlebackground about your company
and what you do?

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Well, yes, Transformative Neurotherapy
actually grew out of my othercompany, Untethered Therapy,
which I initially founded in2014.
And Untethered Therapy is anonprofit mental health agency
located in Bellevue,Pennsylvania, and we do a lot of

(02:01):
really great work there.
One of the major goals is tohelp people get you know
untethered and you know unstuck, and we do a lot of couples.
I started out doing a lot ofcouples work.
That led into doing someaddiction and trauma work and
while I had clients reallyprogressing using some of the
latest and greatest modalities, such as EMDR, emotionally

(02:25):
focused couples therapy andother internal family systems
and other modalities, I had asubset of the clients that just
kind of felt stuck and at theend of the day it kind of felt
like they were brain stuck, ifthat makes sense, and I started
doing a lot of intensiveresearch to try to figure out
how I could get these clientsunstuck.

(02:48):
And I have a background inbiology and integrative biology.
I had originally thought it'sbeen a little circuitous route
to get to where I'm at.
I originally thought I was goingto be a veterinarian, so the
master's in integrative biologyand physiology, and I also have
a background in actually animaltraining and psychology and

(03:09):
that's kind of where some ofthat interest initially started.
But while I was in that field Ifelt redirected towards, you
know, human psychology andtrying to.
I felt like, as much as it'sgreat to save Fido and I still
have Fido, in fact, my littleguy's still in the room, he
might pop around at times thatit was more important to it's

(03:32):
more important to save familiesand that it would have like a
longer legacy.
And so I kind of shifted gearsand started that and that, you
know, led to the development ofUntethered Therapy and, like I
said, we do some really greatwork over there, but I still had
some clients doing what I feltlike were doing all the right
things and their heart was in itand they still felt stuck.
And so, kind of going back tomy biology roots and physiology

(03:56):
roots, I started doing someserious research about what
could help, First initiallylooking at some modalities with
neurofeedback and thenultimately leading to
neuromodulation, which is whatwe do now, and that led to the
founding of transformativeneurotherapy.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
So it was a compliment that was meant to
support our clients atUntethered Therapy and kind of
help them get unstuck, but atthe brain level, from a really
holistic perspective kind ofhelp them get unstuck, but at
the brain level, from a reallyholistic perspective, very cool
Now, as you're building thislegacy out, and we know
marketing is the key to everybusiness's success, right?

(04:33):
So how do you market yourbusiness right now?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Well, we're starting this podcast for one to try to
help reach more people andbecause neurotherapy and
neuromodulation is such acutting edge science, a lot of
people don't know what it is andso they don't know what they
don't know.
So it's kind of we're justtrying to get it out there and
help people understand what apowerful tool this is to help

(05:00):
people heal.
So, in addition to that, a lotof word of mouth from happy
clients and you know we'reavailable on our website for
transformative neurotherapy dotorg.
You can also find us throughuntethered therapy dot org.
As well as our sister companies.
We're also on Facebook andInstagram.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Very good when you're not busy running your multiple
businesses.
What do you do for fun?

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Well, right now, about four o'clock in the
afternoon, I turn into a taxicab and I run my children all
over as they are super engagedin life all over as they are,
you know, super engaged in life.
But when I have a break fromthat, you can find me in the
garden biking and, you know, playing with my dogs as well as
my kids.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Very good, dr Putney, you're a very busy person In
your own words.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Why are you doing this?
To help people heal faster.
At the end of the day, you wantpeople to reach their highest
and best selves or maintaintheir highest and best selves,
and I'm not a very patientperson and I don't like
suffering for myself, my kids oranyone around me, and so I want

(06:18):
to help people get to wherethey want to be as fast as they
can.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
So that's my why I love it.
