In recent days, Canada, France, the UK announced their intention to recognize Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. While this step is welcomed, it is riddled with contradictions and policies that simply do not go far enough to help Palestinians.
At the crux of this issue is “corruption.” Recognition of Palestine is tied to "corruption reforms" by the Palestinian Authority, yet Israel’s Netanyahu faces fraud charges. Canada, the UK, and France plan to recognize Palestine while sustaining Israel’s military aid to continue its genocide in Gaza is diplomatic malpractice at its finest. This performative double standard ignores Israel’s actions at large and does not provide an explicit plan to materialize a Palestinian state.
