Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm wondering if any of you watched the Miss Universe
competition recently. It was just this past weekend. I was
fascinated to see how much of a response it had online,
and interested to see that people are still watching this pageant,
because in an era where women's rights are looked at

(00:22):
with a kind of modern attitude, is there a place
for a Miss Universe still in this day and age?
I wonder do you still watch the pageant? There was
a huge like reality show that unfolded. One contestant left,

(00:42):
Miss Jamaica, fell off the stage and landed up in ICU.
Some judges resigned. There was a trans Testant who pulled
out early because she felt that she was unfairly treated.
It became really quite an interesting political place. So did
you watch the pageant? Is it something that you think
is still relevant in this day and age women competing

(01:06):
at this level with the beauty and their minds. I
suppose to some level. I'm interested to know what you think.
You can call me on two one four four six
five sixty seven, or you can send me a WhatsApp
to seven two five six seven one five six seven.
But it is now time for our travel feature. And
we cross to our zoom line. Today on Wonder the World,

(01:27):
we chatting to a woman who's turning her love for engines,
dirt roads, and the great outdoors into something powerful for
women across South Africa. Nicole Page, who is a mechanic
who helps people dream overlanding vehicles, is the founder of
Untamed Tribe, a new initiative that's creating space for women

(01:47):
to learn practical skills, gain confidence, and step into the
world of overlanding and adventure without feeling intimidated. She's building
this community in honor of her late father, the man
who first taught her how to camp, fix cars, and
embrace the outdoors without fear. So Untamed Tribe is a safe,
supportive environment for women to learn new skills, get hands

(02:11):
on and explore the world with confidence. And she joins
us now on zoom to tell us how it all
began and where this growing movement is headed. Welcome to
the show, Nicole, Are you.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
There, I'm there. How are you guys doing.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Let's start with you telling us about your background and
what drew you to engines, dirt roads and adventure.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
So basically, you said it spot on earlier. So my
dad was my biggest inspiration in all of this. He
taught me how to ride motorbikes, he taught me how
to work on them. We had many adventures traveling all
over and his biggest thing for me was safety and
the know how and not have to depend on anyone
else but myself if I got stuck into a situation,

(02:52):
and that just blossomed into something more beautiful with me
now being able to work in the industry thanks to
my two mentors, which is Paul Marsh and Jomarsh who
helped me and guarded me into this industry.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Tell us what the idea of Untamed Tribe is and
what sparked the idea to create this space specifically for
women in the outdoor and overlanding world.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
The big thing is, you know, there's a lot of
people that are wanting to do it. There's a lot
of women that are wanting to enjoy, wanting to venture
and have fun, but they just they didn't have the
dad that I had. So my thing is to help
inspire woman feel confident, feel safe and actually enjoy and
and learn about about the fun adventures that you can

(03:41):
have in the overlanding and four by four industry.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
I mean you know, my late dad taught me how
to change attire and I did go camping with him.
But this is another level of expertise that your dad
was also into motocross. Is that is that correct?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
That's correct?

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yes, So you really can fix you can fix a car,
am I right. It's a bit different to just changing
a tire and going camping. You know, this is really,
you know, rather experience. Why do you think so many
women feel intimidated or excluded from these kind of experiences
in spaces?

Speaker 2 (04:20):
The big thing is it's a very male dominated industry.
I mean, if you look at vehicles and camping and
that it's more male dominated. And what I'm trying to
get across is you don't need to always have a
man by your side to be able to change your
tire when you're stuck in the bush. Put out your tent,
know the one of one of your vehicle, Go for
the recovery training, go for the maintenance training, and feel

(04:43):
confident in yourself to be able to do it and
to achieve it and to actually enjoy yourself.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Yeah, it's actually not that difficult once you know how right.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
It is, It's not that difficult.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
You're building a community that's very hands on. What kind
of workshops and learning experiences are you offering and working
on right now? Just to give us an idea.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
So twenty twenty six is going to be the year
that we launch everything, and in that we are going
to be having workshop days where we will be doing
recovery training, one oh one, maintenance on your vehicle training.
We're going to be having tips and tricks on how
to pack your car, what you need to pack, survival
skills when you're going out, say for a weekend or

(05:30):
a week or even a month. We're also going to
be doing workshops and fun rally days where all the
women can get together and showcase what they have learned
and the courses and that so a nice little get
away for people, but it's more about bringing across the
confidence and bringing out the confidence and the woman through
these workshops.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
And where are these Where do these workshops take place?
Just give us an idea, just in case any of
our listeners would like to engage.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
So we are going to be running it here in
the Western Cape. We don't have physical location. Each training
station and workshop will be in a different location.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
All right, And how can people find out about these
training workshops.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
So they will be loaded up onto our Facebook and
Instagram and onto our website.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
And so the Facebook is Untamed Tribe. Is that what
they call?

Speaker 2 (06:21):
That is correct, it's untamed Tribe.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Okay, sorry I interrupted, you go on. So they're they're
loaded up.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah, no, that's fine. So they're going to be loaded
up onto the Facebook which is nicole Page Underscore untamed
Underscore Tribe, and then our website which is Untamed Tribe,
dot co, dot zete.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Okay, tell us a bit about some of the adventures
and trips you've done yourself, Nicole.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
So there's very many, there's many many trips. If I
had to go way back, we did a trip to
Mozambique a few quite a few years ago and that
was literally we were there for about two weeks. There
were no ablutions, there were no people. I mean, the
roadmap was turn left at the packet hanging on the tree,
so that was it was literally that like danse in

(07:11):
the bush and I remember us getting there and it
was we had there. It had hailstorm for the first
time in forty years. But the hail is the size
of ice cubes and that and we had to make
makeshift bathrooms. And that was my first real big experience
of overlanding in that many years ago. But ever since
then with when you were across from that, we literally

(07:33):
I was I was booked. I was booked.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
What kind of overland adventure would you recommend someone should
start with when they're first starting out. I mean, when
you say an overland adventure, are you talking about those
big trucks with the big windows where everybody sits in
a sits in them. And that's what I think of
when I think of an overline overland trip. I'm like, incorrect.
Is that a dated view?

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yes? And so overlanding means getting out an adventuring. Overlanding
means being able to sustain yourself, being away from civilization
in it. So whether you've got the big land Cruiser
seventy eight series where it's kitted out completely with your
rooftop tents and that, or whether you like me and
I've got my little mitch Bishy short bill based Perjero

(08:22):
where I got all my camping year which I just
throw into my car and off you go. So there's
no limit to what you need.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
What type of trip would you recommend for someone who's
just starting out.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
I would recommend starting out in a little campsite where
you have people around you and feel safe, just so
that you can get the hang of being outdoors, putting
up your tent, making sure that you've got all your
safety equipment, making sure that you've got all your necessities
that you basically need. Start off there and slowly graduate
into doing more and more I should I say more

(09:00):
and more adventurous things. We're going to go to a yeah,
so more location where there's less people and less people,
and soon you're going to get to a place where
you have booked your spari trip somewhere and it's just
you on your own. So that's where I would.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Safe to be on your own on safari.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Yes, it is right.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
You know what you're doing.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
You know, if you've got your safety and you've got
your tools and your backups, than you are.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Tell us about people who would like to tell us
if you've got options for people who'd like to join
a group like a lady's only camping trip. Is this
something you offer, Yes, it is, so that is something
that we are going to be doing.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
So once we've done our training and once you've got
more comfortable in what you're needing and your recovery training,
and that we are going to be doing hopefully every
three months, where we're going to be taking these women
on set like a weekend trip to start off with,
so they can utilize the training that they've gone through
and done. Even if you're a beginner, like literally a beginner,

(10:09):
we can make sure that you've got the equipment, you've
got all the extras that you need. You don't have
to just go out and buy everything on your own.
So just to slowly gradually get women more involved and
then hopefully within say mid next year to the end
of the year as well, we're going to do a
nice ten day trip where we have a starting point,
we've got a few campsites in between with an end point,

(10:30):
so we make it a good trail and a good adventure.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Just give us an idea of where, like where where? Yeah,
that's what.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
We haven't got to yet. Okay, we haven't got yet
because it also depends on what people are willing and
wanting to do.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Is it within the bounds of the country of South Africa? Yeah, yes,
of course, right, okay, And what do you hope women
will walk away with after spending time with the Untamed Tribe,
so to speak.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
More confidence than themselves, to be able to say to
themselves that I was able to do this, and I
can do this, and I've survived.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
My guest on today on Wonder the World, I'm chatting
to Nicole Page, who is a mechanic who helps build
people's dreams of overlanding. She is the founder of Untamed Tribe,
which is a new initiative that's creating space for women
to learn practical skills, gain confidence, and step into the

(11:28):
world of overlanding and adventure without feeling intimidated. And she
is building this community and you can get hold of
her on Facebook. Did you say on Instagram as well?
Or is it on Facebook?

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Facebook and Instagram?

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Facebook and Instagram. It's called Untamed Tribe and she's building
this community in honor of her late father, who is
the man who first taught her how to camp, fix cars,
and embrace the outdoors. If you have any questions for
my guest, you can send me a WhatsApp or a
voice note to seventy five six seven one five six seven,

(12:02):
or you can call me on two one four four
six five six seven. Let us know what your experience
has been like overlanding and if you, as a woman
have felt intimidated going on your own on an overland tour,
we we really love to hear from you. And in
your day job, Nicole, you work in the overlanding industry

(12:22):
building people's vehicles. How does that experience feed into what
you're doing with the tribe.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Oh? Yeah, so I work for a company called Manjara
Industries where we build up your dream overlanding vehicle and
that draws into exactly what you're actually needing in your
vehicle to go and enjoy these trips. So it's quite
interesting to see because we do very much custom balls
on that and it's quite interesting to seeds what people

(12:49):
actually want. But my biggest thing that my mentor has
taught me, you know, what's simple is always better. But
what the clients want we have to give.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Tell us some of the things. Come on, do you
have to like pump people's rides? I remember that there
was a program on TI you pimp my ride? Tell
us what are the what's the most unusual modification have
you had to put on on a four by four? Oh?

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Where'd you start? Well, we've got one of these clients
that he's absolutely phenomenal shame and he's got a seventy
nine series double cowb Land Cruiser and the whole back
section of his car we've converted into a kitchen because
he loves cooking in that and he's in the industry
of cooking, So we've literally built a kitchen with a
mini fridge, coffee machine, milk throfugher, bread boards, drop down tables,

(13:39):
you name it. We had to do it. So that
obviously is one of the ones that really stand out
to me. That's amazing other clients.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
To start his own cooking show art in the wild
while he's traveling.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Yes he can, and I'm convinced he's going to, so
I'm looking forward to that.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
That's an interesting one. I'm interested to know what kind
of response you've had from women who've joined the workshops
or any of the trips have you had. Do people
want to learn? Do women want they do?

Speaker 2 (14:12):
I've got a lot of women that are contacting me
asking Okay, when are we starting, where do they start?
What do they need? So we actually had the gravel
Kings event about two weekends ago, and that was absolutely
phenomen model because I was able to meet so gravel
Kings is an event where it's gravel racing, so you've

(14:34):
got like a quarter mile race and you race your
vehicle in it. And I had the honor of joining.
So it was absolutely fantastic racing in that I was
gifted a car to drive, so I was quite grateful.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Wow, But we did.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
There ended up being about ten women that came to
join us, and we have kind of we've started our
own WhatsApp group just to keep in contact with each
other so that in more and more events that we
are going to be doing and and bring more women
into so that we can all stick together and if
anyone needs help and that that's that's where we jump in.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
How are the men feeling about this in the industry.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Believe it or not. They they're actually they they're enjoying it.
They are really enjoying it.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
They always a bit of a boys club, you know.
I know that sometimes know they're very welcoming. Okay, okay, good.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
To know they're very welcoming. And I know with Anthony
and them from gravel Kings and that, I mean it
was it was with our collaboration. That's that is our
draft to bring more women into the industry.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
When you look ahead, what is your vision for Untamed
tribe over over the next year or so.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
I want to be able to have a look at
the end of next year and see more confident women
behind the wheel, more more women taking part in the events,
more women not having to just always be a passenger,
Press says, but actually be able to drive these these
tours on that and that's that for me, will be
my cherry on top when I can see that there

(16:08):
are more women that are more involved in these events.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
Yeah, I mean, you know you're driving this big vehicle.
It's important to understand the monster so much so to
speak you know the beast. You know you can't just
get in. It's a powerful machine. It's interesting to know
how it works. And that is empowering in itself. And finally,
for women listening right now, because we need to say
goodbye and go to news. What if they're feeling curious

(16:35):
and listening but they're nervous, what would you say to
encourage them to take that first step?

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Just do it. Nothing is stopping you. You standing in
your own way of true happiness and true adventure. Follow
your passion and follow your heart. You think you can
do it. You can do it.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
That's wise words. Thank you so much, Nicole, really appreciate
your time today.

Speaker 2 (16:58):

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
