Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was a controversial American photographer known for his black-and-white portraits, stylised nudes, floral still lifes, and candid documentation of New York’s gay BDSM scene. His 1989 exhibition The Perfect Moment sparked national debates on public arts funding and censorship due to its provocative content. Celebrated for formal elegance and mastery, Mapplethorpe’s work remains influential, with major retrospectives and collections worldwide. He died of AIDS-related illness, Patricia interviewed him during his final months on Earth.
