Dr. Zethu Matebeni is an elder, a community worker, an activist, a writer, a poet and a documentary film maker. Her scholarship has had a immense impact on queer activists and scholars in South Africa and beyond - including, for instance, her book Black lesbian sexualities and identity in South Africa: An ethnography of black lesbian urban life and as collaborative editor and author in impactful queer anthologies such as “Reclaiming Afrikan Queer Perspectives on Sexual and Gender Identities” , “Queer in Africa: LGBTQI Identities, Citizenship, and Activism” and Beyond the Mountain: Queer life in Africa's Gay Capital.
