Send me a text!

Today, we are reviewing the well-known Disney classic, Hocus Pocus. This movie was directed by Kenny Ortega, and it follows three witches, the Sanderson Sisters, as they try and are children in to live forever. Winifred, Mary, and Sarah have to face a few obstacles along the way.

In this episode, we talk about the Halloween icons themselves, and we talk about what it was like for me to watch this movie for the first time! We also dive into the lighting, costuming, and we even ask a question about a plot hole that I still do not know the answer to! Hope you enjoy!

Mackenzie (00:01):
Okay, good.
Slay slay slay.
Okay.
I'm actually gonna redoeverything.
Hey y'all! Welcome back orwelcome to the Pickle Jar.
This is What's the Dill?
I'm your host, Mackenzie Pickle.

(00:22):
It has been quite a busy weekfor me, but let's be honest,
when is it not busy?
I feel like I'm all over theplace all the time, so it's
fine.
But it's October, y'all, andyou know what that means.
It's spooky season! I'm soexcited.
I've got my place decorated forHalloween.
I've got this cute littlepillow that my mom got for me.

(00:43):
For the month of October, Ireally want us to focus on the
theme of Halloween and allthings spooky.
So today I thought we wouldstart with a classic, not so

scary, Disney favorite (00:54):
Hocus Pocus.
Put on your cloaks, grab yourbrooms, and let's get on into
the review.
Okay, before we get started, Ihave to confess something.
I had not seen Hocus Pocusbefore this year.
That I remember.
Okay, maybe I'd watchedglimpses of it as a kid, I don't
know.
But I'd never sat down andwatched the whole movie.

(01:14):
And I know, I know, I've heardit all.
Trust me, I know.
Recently, I was cast as SarahSanderson in a parody stage
production that one of myfriends wrote, so I figured I
needed to watch it and do acharacter study and also see
what all the hype is about.
And spoiler alert, I loved it.

(01:35):
This movie is everythingHalloween.
It's spooky, but it's alsofunny.
It's got some dark themes, which I did really like, but
good triumphs over evil in theend.
I loved this movie.
It definitely wasn't making mejump scary.
It's not super gory, but it wasspooky.
There were definitely a fewscenes that I know would have
terrified me as a kid.

(01:55):
Um, you know, hence why Iprobably didn't watch it.
I was a really big scaredy catback then.
Honestly, I'm kind of a bigscaredy cat now, still, just
like a little better.
Uh whatever.
Anyways, it wasn't like superscary or anything.
They just touched on some darkthemes.
I really loved the tone of thismovie, though.
It was dark humor, funny, verysarcastic.

(02:15):
I really like the banterbetween all the sisters.
I love their dynamics.
You have Winifred, thecommanding and utterly just evil
leader.
Then you have Mary, she's loyaland she's obedient, kind of the
right-hand woman.
And then you have Sarah, theditzy but also alluring siren,
you know, because they use hervoice to draw in children.
But they all fit together verywell.

(02:37):
They all have their quirks, they all have their place in the
coven, so I was definitelyenjoying the relationship
dynamics and just cracking up attheir different personalities.
Also, we do need to talk aboutthe lighting of the movie.
I really enjoyed it.
It wasn't super bright.
I don't want to say it was dullbecause it wasn't, but it it
had this really interestingcolor scheme throughout.

(02:59):
Like I said, it wasn't superbright or anything.
It just it was spooky.
That's really the best word Ican use to describe it.
It was really good.
I just I love.
Also the costumes, love, gorg, love all of them.
Okay, speaking of dark themes, like the scene in the beginning
where it shows their feet, youknow, when they get hung in
Salem.
I was so not expecting thatfrom Disney.

(03:20):
But also, I mean, like, that'slike exactly what would have
happened.
So I'm glad they did show it,you know.
I just I wasn't expecting it,and I still think it was
tasteful, like they don't showthem, show them, you know, but
you can tell by context clueswhat's happening.
Definitely got your attentionbecause I was like, wait a
second, what is happening?
Like, this is the beginning ofthe movie, and they're dead.
The whole opening in generalwas eye-catching, very

(03:42):
eye-catching.
It immediately hooked me in.
I was drawn into the story, wanted to know what was gonna
happen.
And then watching the sistersgo through the 90s and seeing
all this new technology and likeindoor plumbing and how they
were interacting with things andthem learning as they were
going was absolutely hilarious.
Some of the best little jokes, like just little moments that

(04:04):
you would miss if you weren'tpaying attention.
I just loved watching themnavigate the world.
It was really well thought outto me that they didn't just let
them, oh, okay, like weunderstand everything, because
no, they would not have knownanything.
And I just really lovedwatching them figure things out
as they went.
The kids were good, all theactors were great.
I really enjoyed them, but Iloved Dani.

(04:25):
She is so sassy and sohilarious.
Honestly, just such a gooddepiction of a little sister.
Her and Max's relationship wasvery, very on point.
Max was also a cutie pie who'sprecious.
You know, he's got the wholeangsty, like, I miss my home.
I wish we'd never moved here, whatever going on.
He's got a crush on Allison, and they're really cute back and

(04:45):
forth.
It's just, it's precious.
The whole thing is precious.
The entire movie was fantastic.
I really enjoyed every minuteof it.
I love the music.
I loved Sarah's little likeluring song that she sings when
they bring the children in.
Oh, and I loved I Put A SpellOn You.
Oh, talk about iconic.
Hello.
Beautiful job, incredible.

(05:06):
Stuck in my head, actually.
Love the dancing, like theparents' costume, the going to
their little party.
That was cute.
The talking cat, too, beingThackery.
I loved his little addition toeverything.
Also, like when he gets runover by the bus and they're all
like crying, thinking that he'sdead, and then he's like, dude,
I have nine lives.
What up?
Let's go.
Like, it was so funny.
I love him.
And you know, he gets toreunite with his sister at the
end, and he's no longer a cat.

(05:27):
That's really sweet, and youknow, whatever.
It's heartwarming.
But one little thing that I amconfused about, like I said, the
whole movie's cute.
I love.
Are Max and Allison immune toSarah's song?
Because all the kids arefollowing her voice.
You know, she's singing it,they're getting all these kids
in Salem to come towards them.
They're all following Sarah'svoice, like being lured to their

(05:49):
house or whatever.
But somehow Max and Allison arefine.
Are are they immune to is itjust them that are immune to it?
Is there like an age range oflike if you're under 16, this
song really gets to you, but ifyou're not, then you're fine?
Or is it just Max and Allisonspecifically are immune because
there's something special aboutthem?

(06:10):
Or is it just a plot hole?
I don't know.
And I did ask that question outloud when I saw them not going
under the trance when everyoneelse was, but I'm not gonna
dwell on it, okay?
I was confused about it though.
I was.
This is a cute movie.
I know this is a short review,I'm not really there's nothing

(06:30):
super like crazy about it.
There's nothing wild, and Idon't want to analyze it too
much because that's not reallywhat it's for.
You know what I mean?
It's a cute movie, and I cansee why people love it.
It's very nostalgic and fun, ithas its quirks, you know.
I enjoyed watching it.

(06:50):
There are definitely somecheesy jokes and you know,
things that you can make fun of,but it's fun.
I got to watch it with the twoother people playing the other
Sanderson sisters in thisproduction that I'm in, and we
had a blast watching ittogether.
It's definitely not the mostamazing movie I've ever seen.
Obviously, I didn't go into itthinking that, but I'm gonna
give it a three out of five.
It was a solid movie, very fun.
I'll probably watch it nextHalloween, you know.

(07:12):
It's just it's great for thistime of year.
It's really fun.
It's good if you don't likesuper scary or anything, if you
want to sort of dip your toeinto the world of Halloween
slash horror movies.
But it was good.
Definitely a great movie tostart off the spooky season.
That's all I've got for youtoday.
I know this was a shorter one,but you know, things are busy,

(07:32):
we're all getting ready forHalloween, and I just wanted to
pop in and let you know that Ifinally saw a Hocus Pocus.
