(00:54):
in the saddle is angular and long legged. His skin
is sundi brown. The gun and his holster is gray
steel and grainbow mother of Pearl.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
It's handle unmarked.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
People call them both the Sick Shooter. The NBC Radio
Network presents James Stewart as The Sick Shooter, a transcribed
series of radio dramas based on the life of Brick Punset,
(01:28):
the Texas plainsman who wandered through the Western territories, leaving
behind a trail of still remembered legends.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
I'd known the Harcourt Brothers, a good many years first
time I passed through Harness Creek, or just youngsters, of course,
as before their paw died. But Cash Harcourt he was
all at twenty six now, and great big star on
his vest and the cold forty five stuck in his belt.
It seemed funny to think of him as a town shriff. Oh,
(02:04):
not that he didn't look the part, but I couldn't
help remembering them when his legs weren't long enough to
reach the stirrups and the pony lex Hardcourt, he wasn't
quite so grown up. He must be about twenty or
so now. He sure tried to appear older, though, a
great big mustache sprawling across his upper lift and a
kind of a swagger when he walked. But in spite
(02:26):
of all his trying to be old and everything, he
was still Cash Hardcourt's kid brother, and everybody knew it
well anyway. The reason I came into Herds quick because
I was gonna sign up for the Silver Spur cattle
drive down in New Mexico. Only trouble was I hit
town a week or so early. Silver Spur outould is
still out in the rain. So while I was waiting,
(02:49):
I stopped off with the Hardcourt boys and their aunt,
Missus Petrie. She kept house for him.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
There now.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Oh, no, no, no science, miss Patrio. I've had my
share of.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
You, Cash, I'm full up best, No need ask you legs.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
There you are. That's the last of them.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
Nan bez. You know the only reason I take seconds
is so you won't have to throw the food away seconds.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
See to me, that's about it's fourth helping the fitters,
ain't it.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Bred Well, I don't know, Cash, I'm not for certain.
I sat of lost count about after the third time
he stuck that plate out.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
They're growing boy like him, I guess he's bound the
stowaway loud.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
Well, now, I wouldn't josh about my growing so much
if I was you, Cash. Just give me another inch
or so and I'll be ready to trim you down
to side.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Both of you here, think you too a serious?
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Oh, don't worry about that, miss Patrie. They've been talking
about fighting each other for the last ten years, but
whenever there's a real scrap, somehow the Hardcourt brothers usually
managed to wind up on the same side.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Well, so I wouldn't count on that bread. You know,
Lex has been getting pretty feisty lad here, I may
have to take him down a pig or two.
Speaker 6 (04:05):
Yeah, well, now let me tell you that there's just
one thing that's kept me from cleaning your apply along
before this, oh minute, I was to start something like
as not you'd throw me in jail.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
I guess I'd have you for your own safety. But
if I was ever to slug you back, you just
might not be right afterwards. Tell about it.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Well, now, if you just stop this foolishness, get out
of my kitchen, all three d the idea brothers talking
like that? Now go along, or I'll show you who's
the real boss of this family.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
You know, brit I wouldn't be surprised, be good.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
I don't dot it for a mint o cat, not
for a minute, and.
Speaker 6 (04:41):
You too, lex right, not a mouthful of food left
to ease, more right, I'd be real.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Please help you with those dishous newspapers.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Oh do you think I want some man breaking up
my fancy china? No, thank you. You just wait there
in the sitting room with the boys, and I'll join
you just as soon as I give these things a
got a problem?
Speaker 3 (05:04):
You are sure as a fine woman, kg.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, I don't know what we do that here, Brett,
Lex don't even remember I'm on. I just sort of
recollect her real thing, Like was antibass? Who bring us
up to all intents and purposes?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Well, sit down, Brett, you sit down? What are you
sophidgity for? Lex? You're going calling on Hannah Joseph again night,
No cause to act sheepish about it.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
I ain't going calling right, uh? Cash? Yeah, Well, Britt
and me was talking this afternoon and he says, well,
he thinks that maybe I can sign up for the
silver Spur drive. Is that so well outstands the reason
I'll probably be needing all the extra hands that can
get Ain't that how you figured?
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Britt? Usually works out that way.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Oh, you ain't going on no cattle drive legs, So
just get that idea out of your head. I don't
see why not because I said so when wain.
Speaker 6 (05:59):
Look, you may be the share, but you ain't my boss, Cash,
I'm not Lex.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Look, you ain't cat the foggiest notion of what a
cattle drive means. You wouldn't last morning a week. Maybe
I wouldn't, and maybe I would.
Speaker 6 (06:11):
Now it ain't gonna do me no, harm to try, and.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
I said, forget it. You're so anxious to get a job.
There's work around here in town. Funny work up speak,
mister Crawford.
Speaker 6 (06:20):
I ain't interested in the store, John.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Oh, you ain't interested in anything you're fit for.
Speaker 6 (06:25):
I made up my mind, Cash, I'm signing on with
a Silver Spur, though, have me.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah, Well, you just better start on making that money yours.
You're staying right here where you can keep an eye
on me. That's right where I keep an eye on you.
Speaker 6 (06:39):
You know, someday you and me are really gonna tangle,
and this might just be the day.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
All right, Lex, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Oh, and I'll hold on, hold on, wait a minute.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
I don't worry Brett. I whipped him before lots of times.
He isn't likely to ask for it again. Are you
a Lex? Well? M and little fresh air doing good?
Coolie more mabe saw So. I don't see what got
(07:09):
into you bred encouraging him in this cattle driving nonsense.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
I didn't exactly encourage him. He asked me if the
Silver Spur take him eyes set? I thought maybe there was.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
He should have told him different.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Well, I'm not in the habit of blind cash.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
No, I'm sorry, bred, I didn't mean that.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Well, why why are you just a dead set against
him taking out on his own?
Speaker 2 (07:29):
I ain't set against his Brett, not really. It's just
a you know, alexis young, Mike Wild never had a
part to keep a tight ring on him. He'd somebody
around and see that he don't get into trouble. Uh huh.
Of a year or two when he's married maybe and
he's got somebody else to worry after. Uh, things will
be different. Then he'll be different. Right now. You think
(07:50):
I'm riding him too high, Brick, Well, he's your brother.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
You be the best judge of that.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, Uh, I late in it. You must be retired
of that right to day.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah, well I sure wouldn't object a little sleep, I'll
tell you that much.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
I'm show you where you've been down.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
I was tired too. I started song. Would a minute
to hit that mattress. I guess I'd have slept through
almost anything that night, leastwise, I didn't completely wake up
when somebody started pounding on the door along about two am.
I sort of did remember hearing some talk afterwards, but
it wasn't loud enough for me to get the gist
out of us. I figured there's been some trouble in town.
(08:43):
Probably Cash to take care of him. So I turned
over and shoving my face and the pillar. I would
have gone right back sleep again, except a couple of
minutes later. Oh yeah, yeah, I'm as patri you.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I'm awake.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
What's the traveler?
Speaker 7 (09:02):
It's Rex, Git me shot it.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
It's wide.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
It happened at Luke Foster's place.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Cash is gone down there already, but I thought, maybe
you welp bred Sure. Sure.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
As soon as I get some clothes on and I
came around the corner, I saw a little crowd in
front of closets gambling hall, five or six men standing together,
not saying anything, just waiting. I started to push through him,
but before I could get to the door, Cash Harcourt
(09:36):
came outside. His jaw was set and his hat's pulled
down tight. Eyes were staring straight ahead, but he wasn't
looking at anybody. Marched right past me without even noticing
where I was. How is he Cash?
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Mm? Oh, brit how is he? Lke's dead? Oh? Dead?
When I got here.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Oh I'm sorry, Cash, Yeah, you know who did it?
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Adam Roby. What the boys saying.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
You were dead?
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah? Uh, I ain't got no more time waste here.
It's a lot.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
But oh you're going after him?
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Huh what do you think?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Well, I just thought if you wanted some company, I guess.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
I can no 'em. I'll handle this alone.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Sure, sure, ah right, cash, whatever you say.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
I'll tell you one thing, Brett, I would like to
be in Roby's shoes when they meet up.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Oh sure, I mean, what do you do you fellas
see the whole thing?
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Yeah, I was standing right there in the gamba hall
when it happened. They was playing cards together and Adam
had been winning and Lex had been drinking. If you
ask me, Lex was just playing. Yeah, nothing, mispons it nothing, No.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Go on, go on? What a what are you gonna say?
Speaker 7 (10:59):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (10:59):
I guess share Harcourt wouldn appreciate my opinion and decides
it's late. I've got to be getting hold.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Yeah yeah, yeah, so long. Well I went on into
the gambling hall. Well, mister Hendrick, she was the undertaker
Harn's Creek. He already arrived, he'd taken charge. So it
(11:27):
looked like it was up to me to go back
to the house. And break the news to Missus Petrie.
I sure wasn't looking forward to that, but well, she
sort of read it in my face without me even
having to tell her.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Uh, he's he's gone, yes, ma'am ah.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
If there's anything I can do, Missus Petrie, No.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
There's nothing, d thank you. How how did.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Cash take it? Well, he didn't say much. She just
went looking for the man who shot likes Roby Roby.
That was his name, Adam Roby. I believe, sir, Yes,
y you know him? No, no, not well.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
He has a farm hot self and a wife and children,
and had seen him at church and places. She she
appeared a real nice woman.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Well, I guess she isn't to blame for her.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
I don't blame her, bris, I don't even blame.
Speaker 8 (12:41):
Well.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
The truth is, I've been worried about Lex for a
long time. Cash had been holding him down too much,
trying to make him tow the line too much.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
Well, I guess he was doing what he thought bash,
but it wasn't.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Best, not for Lex. You see, he resented it being
bossed by his brother. He resented a whole lot. I
knew we couldn't keep it in much longer, but but
I hope that when the trouble comment with be between
him and Cash. Cash thought the world Alexa. No matter
what happened, he wouldn't have done anything to hurt him.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Oh no, no, of course not.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
Oh, but must be somebody coming to offer sympathy. He
was sure gets around in a small town.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
It ain't even daylight yet.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
So here I'll get it.
Speaker 8 (13:29):
Yes, ma'am, I'm Missus Roby. Oh, Adam's wife. I've come
about Adam.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Well, uh, the sheriff isn't here right now, Missus Roby.
Speaker 8 (13:41):
And he's he's out looking for my husband.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Ady. Yes, ma'am, Well that's what I figured.
Speaker 8 (13:50):
I didn't want to see Sheriff Harcourt.
Speaker 5 (13:53):
I wanted to talk to you, m your brit Poncid
inture the six.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Yeah, I'm Britt ponchit may I well, I just don't know,
mister Proby. You certain to see that. Yeah, let her come.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
Here, m Missus Petree. Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm so terrible. Sorry, sir,
won't you won't?
Speaker 7 (14:24):
Is it done?
Speaker 5 (14:25):
Thank you?
Speaker 7 (14:28):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (14:29):
Miter Poncid. I I don't know how to say this,
but if you'd like to talk to Britt alone.
Speaker 8 (14:36):
No, No, it's best that you hear it too. Mr
Poncit Adam come home right after the killing him to
get some things together. Well, he told me it wasn't
his fault.
Speaker 5 (14:51):
He swore that it wasn't he says.
Speaker 8 (14:54):
He says Lex was spoiling for a fight, that Lex
drew first. A Adam ain't never been a man for shooting.
Speaker 5 (14:59):
Mr Pop what's it? I believe what he said.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Well, I guess that's natural enough.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Well, he's hiding out now, Sheriff won't be able to
find him.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Oh, I wouldn't count on that, Missus Roby is sooner
or later, it's.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Just did Adam doesn't want to hide out. He he
wants to give himself up.
Speaker 8 (15:22):
Oh, he says he'll give himself up to you.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
To me, he wants.
Speaker 8 (15:30):
You to promise that you'll turn him over to the
District Marshal. Standish falls.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Well, I I just don't know what you're driving out,
Miss Roby.
Speaker 8 (15:37):
Adam Adam's afraid that if Sheriff Harcourt finds him, the
Sheriff of Adam's aer afraid he won't get a trial.
That's all he's asking a a fair trial.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Oh, I'm sorry, Miss Roby. This isn't honey, am I
a fact. I'm sorry.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
Well thanks anyway, Gray.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Yes, ma'am, i'd like you to see that Adam Roby
got to the marshal at Standish falls You what, but
Cash feeling the way he does now, he might he
might do something he'll regret for the rest.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
Of his life.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
Oh it's bad enough, Brit what happened tonight. I wouldn't
want anything worse.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
No, mist Petrie, I'm certain that Cash would next.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
Was the only person on the face of this earth
that Cash cared about, and he'll blame himself for what happened,
blame himself for not being there.
Speaker 5 (16:32):
And he'll just have to take it out on somebody.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
I'm not standing up for Adam Roby, Britt, I'm not
even thinking about him. I'm just thinking about Cash.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Well, even so, I'm sure I don't see where my
place is this thing.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
A little while ago you asked me if there.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Was something you could do, Yes, ma'am, Well.
Speaker 8 (16:58):
Mister Pansais, just give me your promise that Adam get
the Danish Fallsen. I'll tell you where you can find him.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Ah, Miss Robie, I'll give you my promise.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
We'll return to James Stewart as the six Shooter in
just a moment. The first, well, I just wanna say
thanks to you, our listeners, for the many kind letters
you write to us each week. It kind of makes us,
all of us feel that our efforts in bringing you
the six Shooter are genuinely appreciated and very grateful.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Now, Act two of the story called Revenge at Harness Creek.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Well, it was getting on towards six o'clock in the
morning by the time I left Harness Creek. According to
his wife, Adam Robie was hiding in a cabin and
Moon Canyon about twenty miles east, so I started off
in that direction. While about seven thirty I passed the
north boundary of the Silver Spur and I swung up
the wedge trail that wound through a yellow outcrop of rock.
(18:26):
Was moren ten minutes later when I spotted somebody ahead,
A man riding down the trail toward me. Pulled up
in the shade of some evergreen waited well puh weo
weoll wo ooh full. I finally came within recognizing distance
and cash Hardcourt and no doubt about it. From the
(18:47):
looks of that bay mare, is he been riding pretty hard.
The horses flanked the covered of sweat, and her head
was down, swinging side the side of every step she took.
Cash hadn't seen me yet, but when he did, he
gave us start and as forty five came out fast,
hatch me Cash Brett. Right, Oh, I'll take it easy
(19:09):
with that thing, devil.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Are you doing that here to which I didn't want
no help?
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Yeah? Yeah, you did well?
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Going back to town. Then I can handle Ruby alone.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Nobody said you couldn't.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
And stop following me.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
From from the looks of the things, I'd say we
were moving in office of directions.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Things running down some tracks here they stepped minors, so
up ahead couldn't be a Ruby.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Well, I don't think i'll turn around just yet, that is,
if you haven't gone on any objection.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
I got objections?
Speaker 3 (19:44):
Is that's all?
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Even the meat Brett?
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Uh, As long as you're certain he didn't come this way,
I don't see what difference it's make. I ride on
a little further.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
I'm the sheriff, GrITT. You ain't got no business interfering
in the way I can carry out the law.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
That's right, as long as you do carry out the
law you talk about. Roby's wife is scared that you
won't bring him in for a trial if you find him.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Huh.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
And she asked me to turn him over to the
Marshall at Standish Falls.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Now.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
I didn't want to get mixed up in this Cash,
and I told her so right straight out. But it's
what your aunt wanted to and Best that's right. I
couldn't very well turn her down after what happened last night.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
And Best thinks I'd kill Roby.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
She thinks you're upset, that's all.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Well, ain't I got a right to be upset? Sure
you have? So you wanna take Roby over to Mishall Griffith's.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
Any Yeah, well I haven't found him yet.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
It suppose his wife told you White to Luck, I
got a right to ask you, Brett. He's a wanted man.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Are you asking Cash?
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Guess? It don't matter. I only care about his seeing
that he's arrested, brought to justice. It's all I'm trying
to do.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Yeah, well, I guess the cleaners we stand pretty good
chance of finding him.
Speaker 7 (21:11):
Yeah well, I.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
I watched Cash over my shoulder until he was out
of sight, and then I started off again. Let's go
watch him. About six miles later, I passed a waterfall
that missus Roby had said it was a landmark. I
turned the scar into a little box of canyon to
(21:41):
the left of the falls. A couple of miles further,
I came to the shack. Well, we'll star Oh whoa yeah,
uh easy enough to see how cash missed it? Unless
you knew there was a cabin in the canyon. It
did send chance to find that. I walked out into
the open, but I stopped a good twenty yards before
(22:05):
I got it in rifle range.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Robbie, Robbie, it's punching, Roby, Brett, ponch it go.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
Yeah, I'm alone. I like tell you where to find me.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
That's right, And you're taking me to stand to fall.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
If that's how you want it, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (22:29):
That's how I wanted.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Where's Sheriff Harbour. He's riding toward town last I saw him. Okay,
I'll be right out.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
About a minute later he came toward me, leaving the
sorrow pony, and he'd had a tethered behind the cabin,
a little man sort of grayish with a deep set eyes.
And a kind of tired sag to his mouth. He
was holding the Winchester carbine under one arm, looked around anxiously,
(23:00):
like as if he wasn't certain I was telling the truth.
And then he seemed to satisfy himself, and he shoved
the carbine into the saddle scabbard and he climbed onto
the pony. We'll uh take the south trail, cut around
Harness Creek.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Whatever you say, let's go, mister pont Sits. Yeah, I'm
I want you to know it. Well, the shooting wasn't
my fault. LEX was on the prot he he forced
me into it.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Oh, that's for a joy to decide. Robe sure, sure,
I reckon.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
You believe my story or you wouldn't be doing this.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
I believe you're entitled to a trial. That's all as
far as I can tell. So's everybody else, Sheriff park
Court included you. You didn't tell him where I was.
I didn't tell him. Come on, let's move on.
Speaker 6 (23:49):
Yeah, yep.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
We rode out of the canyon, turned south just beyond
the falls. But the next hour, so oh, we didn't
do any more talking and just didn't seem to be
much to talk about. Then we started down from the
crest of the ridge and I saw flapped stretch of
land out ahead. He still had about a mile a
(24:16):
rough mountain trail before it. We hit that level ground.
Roby was about eight feet behind me, and as I
edged Scar around a big boulder, he was out of
sight for a couple of seconds and fight getting down
behind some Roby forever. I slid off Scar and I
fought myself against the ground. I hunched over a couple
(24:37):
of feet on my left and I got a glimpse
