Speaker 1 (02:33):
Sheriff John Trent sat at the desk in his office,
which occupied part of the jail building in the town
of Orrville. The veteran lawman had long been prod of
his shooting ability, but now he winced as he read
the newspaper. For the first time in his life, he
was under editorial fire.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
As a deputy entered the.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Office, Sheriff Trent looked up and said, Jake, newspaper claims,
I'm murdered hook Mason and trying to frame a crime
on the two men in jail.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
Sheriff Hook shot first, you'll kill that crook and self defense.
As for his partners, half Miller and Lance.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Hole, paper claims they're innocent prospectors.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
That dog gune newspapers against you politically mm.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
The editor even brings hook Mason's widow into the story.
O Aw says she needs cash, wants to sell Hook's
gun and other things, breaking out.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
Call on her, Jake, hold down the office, all right, cheer.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Meanwhile, in a nearby camp, the lone ranger read the
newspaper the tonto had brought with supplies from town.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
The maskman scanned the news.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
Len's had thought of Sheriff John Trench in trouble. Oh,
let be banned? He hear him, good lawman, that's one
of the best. Oh, why him in trouble?

Speaker 6 (03:52):
Now?

Speaker 4 (03:52):
This paper says he unnecessarily shot and killed one of
three men suspected of stage robbery and murder. Two of
the men are now in jail.

Speaker 7 (04:00):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
Who sheriff killed hook Mason? That name is familiar. Un
may remember we hear it somewhere now. I remember we
saw the name on the reward posted Missouri. Hook Mason's
well of the names used by an outlaws escape from
Missouri prison while serving a life sentence that.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Right him have crooked trigger fingers.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Yes, because of that crooked finger, he had to cut
off the front part of the trigger guard, and any
gun he used maybe.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Him same color, sheriff shoot.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
We could prove that the newspaper editor could no longer
complain that John Trent shot an innocent prospector, and that
helped sheriff. Yes, this paper speaks of Hook Mason's would
have who is trying to sell her husband's possessions? Find
out where she lives? Todd, Oh the night we'll call
on her.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Me go find out now he scout, get him off
scow uh.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
That evening, And when the sheriff returned to his office
with a fancy gun belt buckled around his hips, and
a new style colt in the holster, the deputy said.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Well, share if I see you got Hook's gun and belt.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
That's right, Jake.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I also bought his horse and saddled and the rest of.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
His gear I left at my house.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Did you find missus Mason unfriendly?

Speaker 4 (05:20):
No?

Speaker 2 (05:20):
No, seemed to me she had been happy with Hook.
I think she's glad to be free to go back
to the East.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah, she's not the only one who's free.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
What do you mean?

Speaker 3 (05:32):
A little while ago I released half Miller and Lance Holt.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
What that judge ordered their release for lack of evidence.
So I had to give them their guns and horses
and let him go.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Jake, those crooks have gotten away with murder.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Meanwhile, half Miller and Lance Holt had written out of Warville.
We're heading toward an isolated, lighted cabinry.

Speaker 6 (05:57):
Lance very Mason must be home.

Speaker 8 (06:00):
Let's hope we find Hook's gun belt there. We gotta
have that cartridge.

Speaker 6 (06:04):
Are you sure Hook put the map inside of cottridge?

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Ien?

Speaker 8 (06:07):
Do it? Put the cartridge in his gun belt. They
we're close to the cabin.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Hook Mason's widow was busy packing a few belongings for
her return to the East. As she closed the carpet bag,
hap Miller and Lance hold their faces covered by bandanas,
entered the cabin with suns in their hands.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Oh did you get hurt? What do you want? Hook's
gun belt? It's not here.

Speaker 7 (06:38):
I'm not lying. Why do you want the best?

Speaker 2 (06:41):
None of your where is it?

Speaker 7 (06:42):
I sold all of Hook's these to the share he
knew I needed money to return to the east, and
he brought everything to help me out.

Speaker 6 (06:48):
Maybe she's telling the truth. I don't see any of
the hooks hear around here.

Speaker 8 (06:53):
I am telling the truth. We'll find out. You're going
with us to the Sheriff's office. We want fam to
open the back door beso office. He'll do it for you.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Now, come on, now, let me go. Stop struggling there
the table. Come on, give me a hay right, come on,
this work home peaceful, all right, I'll go.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
A few minutes after Mary left with the two men,
the Lone Ranger and Toto rode up to the cabin
and crew rain. Seeing the door wide open, they went inside.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Look, no one here. There's been a struggle here, Tna.
That was the table on this scuffed rug. Right, We
look for hook Mason, and now come with me. When
we go to the Sheriff's office. We'll tell John jan
about the man who escaped from Missouri prison, and we
report the condition of Merry Mason's cabin. Easy said to
be coffee.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
While the Lone Ranger and Toto were riding toward town,
the caraff Prince sat at his desk alone in the office.
He had fired his newly purchased gun a few times
and had just finished cleaning and reloading it when someone
rapped on the lock the back door.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
Wonder who that is? The sheriff dropped the.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Gun into his holster as he moved to the door
and called, who's her naked?

Speaker 4 (08:20):
I'll unlocked the door.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Outside the door, the outlaws, whose faces were still covered,
stood behind Marry Mason with guns drawn.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Where'd you come it? Gunman? What's this mean?

Speaker 6 (08:28):
Mess your hand?

Speaker 7 (08:29):
Oh hoo, sheriff and made me come here on in.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
The sheriff held his hands a shoulder level as the
two men, using Merry Mason as a partial shield, entered
the office, and suddenly the woman leaped aside if the
sheriff drew and triggered his gun. Hide whiders the gun
miss firing me that half miller knocked the gun from
the woman's hand.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Shoot Call him, I'll rapping with my gun barrel, come.

Speaker 8 (08:50):
Him, Hey, got the woman, she's trying to get away.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Fer let me go her.

Speaker 8 (08:54):
Yell, I've got my hand over my here's the Sheriff's bandana,
a gigger with it too.

Speaker 6 (09:02):
Hold her throat and she tries to yell off saddling.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
When Mary Mason was gagged and tightly bond to a chair,
the outlaws turned their attention to the unconscious lawman on
the floor.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
He's wearing Hook's good beds. I'll unbuckle it.

Speaker 6 (09:18):
Are you sure one of these cartridges has the mappion signs?

Speaker 8 (09:21):
Yeah, but I don't know which one. I got the belt,
that's mamos.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
Soon after happened, Lance rode away with a gun belt.
The lone Ranger and Toto drew rain in the darkness
behind the Sheriff's office. Through the open door, they saw
a woman tied to a chair, gagged and a man
lying on the floor.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
They hurried into the room, at least a woman. Tellow,
I'll see about this man. You wear bad. He must
be the sheriff John Trent. He's alive. I think he's
regaining consciousness.

Speaker 5 (09:57):
No you, oh you not quite a talk after be
cut ropes me get your water?

Speaker 4 (10:05):
Oh what hit my steady, sheriff mask? I gotta get up.
I'll help you to a chair. I'll take it easy.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
I don't serve me. Two mask men try to kill me.
When I come to, I find a masked man helping me.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
Here's your chair, sit down for a minute. Who are you?
Why are you mask? We'll get to your questions. Lady Sheriff,
please believe that tone and I are on your side.
Todd Who that's the name of my Indian friend.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Uh, well, I'll admit you proved friendly so far.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
We read what the newspapers said about the shooting of
Hook Mason. The name was familiar to us. We'd heard
of a murderer by that name who escaped.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
We'll continue our lone ring Tredenture in just a moment.

Speaker 8 (10:58):
Longer the country and.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
You do question, and you may people have to say, and.

Speaker 9 (11:14):
Sure enough, take Midwestern Champions, for instance, when Bobby Feller
takes the mound, the outfield boys sit on the ground.
That Wheaty's pitching leaves them there watching batters fan the air.
And when we name our Wheaty's crew, Big Ted Klezewski's
in there too. He'll face those hurlers day or night
and knock their fastballs out of sight. Bob Feller and

(11:36):
Ted Klezowski both know that Wheaty's magic. There's a whole
kernel of wheat in every Wheaty's flake. Wheaties breakfast of champions.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Keep body you're and on cable.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
Now to continue, Hoping to win the sheriff's confidence, the
lone ranger told about the convict who had escaped from
prison in Missouri, and of the trip to the Mason
home to learn whether the man shot by the sheriff
was the same individual. Then Mary said, I'm Marry Mason.

Speaker 7 (12:21):
I knew nothing of my husband's activities. He rarely came home,
and when he did, he stayed for only a few days.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Did he have a crooked index finger?

Speaker 7 (12:29):
Yes, he must have been the man who broke out
of prison.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
No wonder.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
He shut it out with me when I tried to
arrest him, probably figured he'd be identified and sent back
to prison.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
What happened here in your office, Sheriff, Well, I heard
a rap on the back door.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Let me explain, sheaff Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 7 (12:46):
Two men whose faces were covered by dandanis, came to
my home and demanded my husband's gun belt. When I
told them i'd sold it to you, Sheriff, they brought
me here.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
Un Duration the gun belt's gone.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
They must have taken it, they did.

Speaker 7 (13:00):
I'm sorry sure, I was afraid they'd kill me on this.
I did as they said. I didn't think they'd hurt you.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
The poorcats wouldn't have had the chance to knock me
out of my gun had misfired it.

Speaker 5 (13:10):
I reckon they got the gun too. No one here gun? Well,
that's the one helped me pick it up from floor.
It got trigger guard cutway. I mean I see it
to h That was my husband's gun. It's a good one.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
I bought it along with a gun belt, fired a
dozen shots trying it out. It work fine till the
showdown with those crooks.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
Here's the cartridge that missfired.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
I'd sure like to know why those hambres were so
anxious to get the gun belt.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
What are you doing, mister? The bullet is loose, miss cartridge,
and sure enough there's no powder in a shell. That's
why I failed a fire. The shell is filled with
paper paper. Here it is exactly rolled up.

Speaker 6 (13:48):
Now why internation?

Speaker 4 (13:50):
The sheriff seems to be a map mm.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
The line looks like a trail route ending at a
place marked X.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
What's the rite? And say castle? Butte big little Mason
must be landmarks here? Look at this, missus Mason.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Does it look like your husband's handwriting? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (14:09):
Hi, Sammie Hook and his pals hid the whales Fargo cash.
That's why they didn't have it when I arrested them.
Hook proved this map so they could find the place
where they.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
Left it for this cartridge in the gun belt.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Yes, and I'll bet Hook's pals Half Miller and Lance
Hold are the ones who stole about.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
The newspaper said they were in jail.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
They were released a few hours ago on a court order.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
See.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
I suppose there's no use arresting them again. I couldn't
prove they stole the gun belt.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
Even if you could prove that it had nothing to
connect them to the Wells Fargo robbery. You're right, the sheriff.
Will you step outside with me for a minute time.
I told discuss a crime with you.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
In the darkness outside of the office, The lone ranger
outlined a plan that brought a crown to the Sheriff's face.

Speaker 4 (14:56):
It's mighty dangerous. I'm sure he'll succeed if you me, Sheriff,
I'll have to borrow some clothing. I'll be glad to
lend you clothes. I wear a disguise and pose his
agent for an Eastern firearms factory.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
In the end, the sheriff agreed to cooperate. The next morning,
Sheriff Trent appeared in the Nugget Cafe wearing his old
sick shooter and complaining loudly that the gun he bought
from Missus Mason was not reliable.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
I let an Eastern firearms expert take the gun for
a checkup. I reckon, he'll find out what's wrong with it.
I didn't know there was an.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Easterner in town.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
Here.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
The jed I mentioned arrived last night. He should be
here in the cafe right now. He promised to meet me.
A stranger just came through the front door.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
He's the man wearing borrowed clothing and with his face disguised.
The lone ranger walked directly to the sheriff, who stood
with a group of men at the end.

Speaker 4 (15:52):
Of the bar morning show.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Howdy, mister, did you get that cold fixed up?

Speaker 4 (15:56):
I there was nothing wrong with the gun. It failed
a fire because one cart loaded with papers had a
parlor paper all your gun.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Now, why intirenation would there be paper in the cartridge?

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Probably if someone wanted to play a joke on the
owner of the gun.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
Find joke might cost a man's life.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
If if you don't mind, Sheriff, I'll keep the paper
in the worthless cartridge.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
I don't mind.

Speaker 4 (16:19):
Why do you want it as a souvenir. I'm interested
in the souvenirs and curiosities. Yes, as a matter of fact,
I'm going to investigate some of the curiosities of nature
and the bad lands. I've heard of the strange rock formation.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
You intend to go out to the bad.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
Lands, yes, later in the day.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
That's no place for a tender food load.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
You might get lost. I'm sure I'll be able to
carry myself. Well, it's your funeral.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
Later in the morning, hap Miller and Lance Holt, disappointed
at not finding the map in any of the cockridges
and the stolen gun belt, returned to Orville from their camp.
They soon learned that an Eastern tenderfoot had headed into
the Batlands with a paperloaded cartridge taken from the Sheriff's gun.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
The two outlaws.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
Immediately set out in pursuit, unaware that thing in turn,
were being followed by the Sheriff, his deputy, and Totto.
After riding for some time across the rock strewn batlands, happened,
Lance saw a column of smoke rising from beyond a
massive boulder.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Come on here.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
A few minutes later, the two.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
Outlaws reached the campfire, where the man in eastern clothing
was preparing a meal. The disguised Lone Ranger arose to
greet the horsemen.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Now do you do you two gentlemen? Share my food?

Speaker 6 (17:41):
We've got other plans. Your hands ago.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Two guns, Get your hands up.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
This is Maldredge butt it take his gun?

Speaker 6 (17:47):
Lance right, Hey, this is.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
A fine gun for an expert to be can.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
It's ready for the scrap?

Speaker 4 (17:56):
Why are you holding me up? You've got a map
we wanted you had a map.

Speaker 6 (18:01):
They were how we know?

Speaker 2 (18:02):
But it handed over it.

Speaker 4 (18:03):
If you won't, you'll have to take it. I'll do
it and fight for it.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
By and hear another you'll pay for hitt and another.
Don't tell Lance, I'll shoot you. No, no, don't shoot
I want to feet him to the ground.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
Right move and aroused the suspicion of the crooks By
giving up the map too easily. The Lone Ranger fought
the most difficult battle of his life. In accordance with
his plan. He had to lose the fight, but without
being nimed or killed from behind a pile of boulders
a short distance away. Toto and the two lawmen who
had followed the outlaws watched the struggling men.

Speaker 4 (18:37):
The sheriff said, hold.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Your guns ready. If those crooks make a move to
kill our friend, let them have it. Happened.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Lance bent over the lone ranger, who lay motionless on
the ground, and searched through his pockets for the map.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
He sure put up a fight.

Speaker 6 (18:52):
Yes, many tough for nicher. I hope he's got the map.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Here to something in his pocket, A piece of paper,
he said the man.

Speaker 8 (19:00):
Yeah, and the empty shells in the same pocket.

Speaker 6 (19:03):
We don't need that. Let's see the map.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
It looks easy to follow.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
Shoot as long.

Speaker 6 (19:10):
As we know we have to start from slim beauty.
Let's get you on. What about the eterner where he is?

Speaker 2 (19:15):
He's still alive.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
Maybe we ought to shoot him so he can't identify us.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
Even if he's able to reach town after the beat
and we gave him, it will be a long way from.

Speaker 6 (19:24):
Here by the time he tells his story.

Speaker 8 (19:26):
All right, let's get going.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
It was sunset when Happmuller and Lanceholt reached an odd
shaped boulder at the base of which, according to the
chart a Wells parko money had been buried. It took
but a few minutes to recover the sacks of currency
and transfer the money to saddle bags. Then Half said, I.

Speaker 6 (19:56):
Hook is here. We'd have to split the cas three
ways instead of too.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Half is bigger than a third.

Speaker 6 (20:04):
Well, you hold your gill.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
On me, and all of it is bigger than a half.
You don't beat me, lassie. You're not gonna shoot me?

Speaker 2 (20:11):
Yes again, Half smashed that. I'll got you hand shoot me.
You're covered half for sure. He can't.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
All right, Shadow, disarm.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
The critters and Jake will snap the handcuffs on them.
Where do you come from? Who's a mass man plans?
We figured you find the money if you got the map,
so we just followed you that mash man.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
You should remember me Lands We had a fistfight a
little while ago.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
You can't beat East to it. I don't believe it
holds your hands out for these breaks, Savvy.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
You're under arrest for the whales cargo robbery and the
murder of the stage coach god and driver.

Speaker 4 (20:47):
That's all you've got to say.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
And this time we've got you with a stolen.

Speaker 4 (20:50):
Cash thatches Helen's her critic shuff it sure wills.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
Especially when the corner Missus Mason testify about Hook's crooked finger.
Should be easy to prove that hooks the man who
was wanted dead or alive for breaking out of the
Missouri pen.

Speaker 4 (21:04):
And if you need more proof, you have Hook's gun
with a cutaway trigger guard.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
That's right. Thanks to you, mister. That newspaper editor is
going to eat his words, so don't.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
I am proud to have worked with the good lawman, Sheriff,
and I am proud to have worked with you. Come on, hello,
Audio Sheriff. I am certain this day's work will sure
your re election.

Speaker 6 (21:21):
Thanks again.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
