>> Announcer (00:00):
On the next episode of Sips, Suds, and smokes.

>> Julianna (00:04):
We bought a collection of beers based solely on
looks. Now we just have to see what's inside and
if the inside can live up to the art on the
outside.

>> Dave (00:16):
Yeah, you know, today we're going to try. He looks
like a giant insect wearing human clothes, but his
story checks out. We're also trying Citra Jam
Single Hop ipa. We're trying a mild from Forest
and Main Brewing. We're trying Joy Orange Cream

(00:39):
Chocolate Stout Dark Places Imperial Stout with
chocolate, vanilla beans, and ancho chilies. And
you're not you when you're thirsty. Snickers
Porter.

>> Announcer (00:53):
We'll be right back after this break. Brought to

(01:18):
you almost live from the dude in the basement
studios.

>> Dave (01:21):
Why?

>> Announcer (01:22):
Because that's where the good stuff is. It sips,
suds and smokes with your smoke and host the good
old boys.

>> Dave (01:50):
Suds. Suds.

>> Julianna (01:51):
Suds.

>> Announcer (01:52):
Uh, it's time for more suds.

>> Julianna (01:59):
Hey there, guys. Welcome to another sud segment
where we believe people should be judged on what's
on the inside. Specifically, what's on the inside
of their beer fridge.

>> Dave (02:11):
What if people don't have a beer fridge?

>> Julianna (02:13):
Well, uh, then I'm really judging. I mean, yeah, I
don't know that I can enter their home if they
don't have a beer fridge.

>> Dave (02:20):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (02:20):
Just saying.

>> Dave (02:21):
It's weird.

>> Julianna (02:22):
I know, I know. Well, I'm one of your hosts, good
old gal Juliana. And joining me today at the table
is good old boy Dave.

>> Dave (02:30):
Oh, hey. Hey.

>> Julianna (02:32):
I was waiting while I was going around the table.

>> Dave (02:35):
Dramatic build up.

>> Julianna (02:37):
And then I got to you. Yeah, it got to you.

>> Dave (02:40):
Empty chair. Empty chair. Sort of empty chair.

>> Julianna (02:44):
Well, you know.

>> Dave (02:46):
Okay, great to be here, everyone. Glad I could be
part of the crew.

>> Julianna (02:51):
And I am glad as well. So let's face it, we've all
been there. You're at the beer store, and you're
trying to pick out something new and interesting,
and there's just so much out there. So much that
you have the potential of freezing up. I mean,
there's a lot of pressure.

>> Dave (03:10):
Sometimes paralysis by analysis, and you're just.

>> Julianna (03:14):
Not sure what to pick. Right.

>> Dave (03:17):
Except your nose.

>> Julianna (03:18):
So what do you do? What do you do besides picking
your nose? Well, you either go for a brand or a
style that you've had a hundred times before, and
you. You know what they're like.

>> Dave (03:30):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (03:30):
Or you go for that interesting name and can art.

>> Dave (03:35):
Yes. Yes. Because if it's pretty, it must be good.

>> Julianna (03:42):
Uh, look, don't be ashamed. We've all Done it.

>> Dave (03:46):
Okay, yeah, yeah, we've all done it. But you
should still be ashamed.

>> Julianna (03:50):
Uh, there's nothing to be ashamed.

>> Dave (03:52):
It's shameful.

>> Julianna (03:53):
Whatever. Recently, good old boy Dave and I did
just that. We bought a collection of beers based
solely on looks. Now we just have to see what's
inside and if the inside can live up to the art on
the outside. Yeah, you know.

>> Dave (04:12):
Right, right.

>> Julianna (04:13):
Uh, all right, so what are we drinking today?

>> Dave (04:15):
Today we're going to try. He looks like a giant
insect wearing human clothes, but his story checks
out. That's a doppelbock from Evergreen Brewing
Company in Camphill, Pennsylvania. We actually
have covered them in a past episode. We're also
trying Citra Jam Single Hop IPA from M. Dancing

(04:37):
Gnome Brewery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We've
also covered them in a previous episode. We're
trying a mild from Forest and Main Brewing in
Ambler Penns. I think it's a dark mild. Uh, we're
trying Joy Orange Cream Chocolate stout from

(04:57):
Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery in Barry, Ontario,
Canada. Freaking Canadians. Uh, dark places.
Imperial Stout with chocolate, vanilla beans and
ancho chilies from Abomination Brewing in North
Haven, Connecticut. And you're not you when you're

(05:19):
thirsty. Snickers Porter beer or Snickers Porter
from Beer Tree Brew in Port Crane, New York. We've
also covered them in a past episode. So a lot of
folks we've talked about before on here, but, uh,
I don't think we've ever discussed any of these
specific beers on the show. So, um, I think what

(05:42):
we'll do is we'll. We'll start, you know, each one
and then we'll kind of describe the can and then
we'll. Then we'll go for, uh, you know, the
innards.

>> Julianna (05:53):
Sure. All right, well, we're going to be tasting
these beers on the fly. Giving our tasting notes
like we normally do.

>> Dave (06:01):
Yep.

>> Julianna (06:01):
And then rating them from one to five. One being M
not great and five being.

>> Dave (06:07):
Hey, hey. Wow, my face got blown off. This beer
was so good.

>> Julianna (06:12):
Pretty much, yes. Face just blown right off.
Tastes good. Okay.

>> Dave (06:22):
Like that.

>> Julianna (06:23):
Well, let's get to the beer.

>> Dave (06:25):
Do it.

>> Julianna (06:25):
Okay. First up is going to be. He looks like a
giant insect wearing human clothes, but his story
checks out. Doppelbach 8% ABV. One of the brewer's
favorites. This doppelbock was lagered extensively
to create a M medium full body with a creamy
smooth finish. Notes of rich, multi flavored

(06:48):
caramel with dark fruit sweetness of mission fig
plum. Medjool plate dates. Medjool Dates. I don't
know if I'm saying that right. Toffee and a slight
coffee note. A truly festive and celebratory beer.

>> Dave (07:05):
This is outstanding. Like this, this beer. The
color like that. Nice deep caramel.

>> Julianna (07:13):
Yeah, the, uh, color's already drawing me in.
Like, I'm. I'm salivating. Looking forward to this
also, as I. It's from Pennsylvania, so I know I'm
going to love it. Um, and it's from Evergreen, and
I know I'm going to love it too, because I love
Evergreen. However.

>> Dave (07:34):
Each beer is a new story, though.

>> Julianna (07:37):
Oh, God, the creaminess. Yeah.

>> Dave (07:39):
Um, but it has all the things like the caramel.
Nice, nice. Like bread caramel. There is some of
that dark fruit, slight little bit of alcohol burn
at the end, but it's 8% very smooth, multi sweet
beer.

>> Julianna (07:58):
You know, and even on a hotter than Hades day,
like it is out today, I could drink this.

>> Dave (08:05):
Yeah, I don't know that I would sit out in the sun
drinking this, but.

>> Julianna (08:08):
Well, no, but, I mean, in the cool air
conditioning, I could drink this any time of year
is what I'm getting at.

>> Dave (08:14):
Oh, this is a. This is a good, um, beer. You know,
we're having some pizza today. I think it'll pair
well with that. You could have a steak or burger.

>> Julianna (08:23):
Oh, gosh.

>> Dave (08:23):
Something fatty would go along well with this
beer.

>> Julianna (08:27):
Yes, yes.

>> Dave (08:28):
Now tell us what it looks like, honey.

>> Julianna (08:31):
Well, describe first of all, the cans got a lot of
green, so, you know, I'm a fan. And you know what?
He is a giant insect. But he does look pretty
good. I mean, he's got a really nice plaid
sweater. M. And, um, his name is Kevin.

>> Dave (08:52):
Okay.

>> Julianna (08:52):
And, uh, yeah, I. I mean, he's got it. Kevin. I
don't know where he works. I mean, maybe he works
for everybody.

>> Dave (08:59):
He could. But his story checks out. They said so.

>> Julianna (09:03):
His story does check out. I. I think he's great.
I. I mean, I would definitely walk up to him and
say, hey, what are you drinking?

>> Dave (09:12):
He's got a nice jacket on, too.

>> Julianna (09:14):
He does have a nice jacket. Yes. It's a good
coordinating color.

>> Dave (09:18):
I think he's a praying mantis.

>> Julianna (09:20):
Okay. He could be. He's not wearing a cross,
though, so he's not praying that much.

>> Dave (09:27):
Wow, that was terrible. But.

>> Julianna (09:34):
In my own way. Yes, yes. Okay. So I think this is
a fine start. Now, I don't know necessarily that
what's inside matches. Like, I don't think that a
praying mantis would necessarily drink a
Doppelbock, though. If he did, I think that would
be pretty rad.

>> Dave (09:54):
He might.

>> Julianna (09:55):
You know, I mean, maybe, maybe. But I am digging
the can.

>> Dave (09:59):
Do you think the beer. I mean, I think that's one
of the coolest beer names and cans that I've
probably ever seen.

>> Julianna (10:07):
Oh, heck yeah.

>> Dave (10:08):
But do you think the beer carries the weight?

>> Julianna (10:11):
Uh, yes. Yeah, I do.

>> Dave (10:13):
I agree.

>> Julianna (10:13):
Yeah. I mean, totally. This is a win. Win for me.
And this is a solid four. Yeah.

>> Dave (10:23):
Good job, Evergreen.

>> Julianna (10:24):
Now, I mean, if it was another ins, I don't know
that I would like it as much.

>> Dave (10:29):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (10:29):
Uh, yeah, I'm just thinking about that, like when.

>> Dave (10:32):
Like one of those little beetles that's always
crawling around our house.

>> Julianna (10:35):
I don't know that I would be a fan. Yeah. Um, no,
I. I think this praying mantis type of cat.

>> Dave (10:42):
I think Kevin was the right guy.

>> Julianna (10:43):
Especially with the sweater jacket combo that he
has and. And not to mention the shirt with the
collar. Yeah, I. I mean, it's classy. He's classy.
And so is this beer.

>> Dave (10:54):
Good job, Kevin.

>> Julianna (10:56):
More when we return. M. Welcome back, everyone. So
today's episode is. Well, we hope that it's more
than just a pretty face. And by pretty face, we
mean can art. So recently, good old boy Dave and I
went shopping for beer. And when we went shopping,

(11:19):
we were, like, drawn to certain cans because you
know yourself when you're looking for a beer,
sometimes the can art pulls you right in.

>> Dave (11:29):
Sometimes the fella just goes right for a nice set
of cans.

>> Julianna (11:33):
So, yeah. Okay, moving on. Okay, next beer that we
are going to talk about is from a brewery that we
have spoken about before. Another, uh,
Pennsylvania favorite. And I'm talking about
dancing gnome on.

>> Dave (11:49):
The right side of the state, too. Like the good
side of the state.

>> Julianna (11:53):
Really? Really. I think I'm disowning you as a
husband. Anyways, from Dancing Nose Almighty, I'm
not part of this. We're going to talk about the
citra jam. It's a 6.8% ABV. Um, IPA. It's a

(12:16):
variant of their IPA jam. So it's brewed with rye
and heavily dry hopped with citra hops.

>> Dave (12:24):
Nice.

>> Julianna (12:25):
Yes.

>> Dave (12:25):
Well, there's some disagreement about who picked
this can out.

>> Julianna (12:31):
I think it was Dave.

>> Dave (12:33):
I think it was Julie because it's shiny and she
likes shiny stuff. Okay, before there's a
microphone. And you like microphones.

>> Julianna (12:42):
Okay, before we talk about the can art, let's get
to the beer.

>> Dave (12:46):
Okay.

>> Julianna (12:46):
Okay.

>> Dave (12:47):
It's very hazy.

>> Julianna (12:47):
What do you think of the. It is very hazy.

>> Dave (12:50):
Great aroma. I mean, like, the citra just comes
off in waves on this beer. It's so citrusy, juicy.

>> Julianna (12:57):
And also kudos to Dancing Gnome, um, for doing
some single hop.

>> Dave (13:02):
I was.

>> Julianna (13:03):
You know what I mean?

>> Dave (13:04):
I love single hop beers, whether it's like a
Pilsner or an IPA or whatever. I think if you want
to get to know a hop, I think there's no better
way just showcasing it. And I'm, you know, I also
have issues with certain hop combinations. And
when beer brewers make, like, hop salad of, like,

(13:27):
you, uh, know, let's add 15 different hops here
to.

>> Julianna (13:30):
Yeah.

>> Dave (13:30):
Turn into a big old.

>> Julianna (13:32):
Sometimes the ambrosia can work. Uh, sometimes
it's okay, but a lot of times you're just. You're
searching for something, and if you don't, and you
can get frustrated.

>> Dave (13:43):
Yeah. The hops, sometimes they just get in each
other's way.

>> Julianna (13:45):
Yeah, exactly. So this is nice that it's a single
hop.

>> Dave (13:49):
Yeah. And citra isn't. It's a classic American
hop. It's just an amazing orangey kind of citrus.
Zippy little hop, huh? I think, you know, it
really lets you. This beer really lets it shine,
and it lets the beer shine too. You know, I think
it's really good. And I like the fact they use

(14:10):
rye. You know, you get a little extra fruity, bit
tootie in there.

>> Julianna (14:14):
Yeah, yeah, it. It does. Um, it's kind of
impressive because it's t. I feel like it's taking
it out of, like, the traditional New England IPA
ish.

>> Dave (14:25):
Yes.

>> Julianna (14:26):
And giving a little zhuzh. Giving a little
earthiness.

>> Dave (14:29):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (14:30):
If that makes any sense.

>> Dave (14:31):
Western PA flair. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We like
Western pa. Well, I just.

>> Julianna (14:38):
Was thinking more about, like, Pennsylvania Rise a
thing, and I could just feel like this is. This is
the type of beer that I'd have out on a trail in
Pennsylvania or, like, going through the mountains
or something like that. Like, it just. It reminds.
It just makes me feel homey.

>> Dave (14:56):
A lot of bears up there. Better watch it.

>> Julianna (14:58):
Bears. Could be my cousins. I don't know.

>> Dave (15:00):
Could be. Could be some of your cousins.

>> Julianna (15:03):
So. Yeah. So talking about the can art, it is
just. It's silver. It's got a microphone for citra
jam. You know, like, music jam. Yeah. Now, do I
say that this is probably the best of the can art?
No, no, no. But in terms of the beer, I think this
is solid.

>> Dave (15:23):
Yeah, it's very tasty. It's not over the top,
like, hazy IPA flavors, but it's. It's definitely
Hazy. It's got great citrus flavor. I'm a fan. I
think it's a well made beer all around. And I
would love to try the other variants, too.

>> Julianna (15:41):
Yeah, right. Uh, that would be really cool. Okay,
what would you pair this with?

>> Dave (15:47):
Spicy foods. You know, typical stuff. Tacos. Yeah,
I'd have this with some tacos or some spicy, uh,
Kabasa. Oh, and some pierogies.

>> Julianna (16:00):
Oh, yeah.

>> Dave (16:02):
See, my love?

>> Julianna (16:02):
Language.

>> Dave (16:03):
I know, right? See?

>> Julianna (16:04):
Yes, yes, yes. Okay, now, in terms of the can art
versus what's inside, I think it's safe to say
that what's inside is better than the can art.

>> Dave (16:15):
Yeah, I mean, I'm not gonna throw shade on their
can art. It is what it is. You know, it drew you
in at the store and you grabbed it. So now you
have to live, you know, with your decisions, you
know, And I think you should. I think you did a
great job picking this beer up, buddy.

>> Julianna (16:32):
Wow.

>> Announcer (16:33):
Wow.

>> Julianna (16:35):
Like to, like. I. I like how you're throwing the
blame. Yeah. For your shortcomings. All right,
anyways, what do we know?

>> Announcer (16:43):
It's too late. It's already in.

>> Julianna (16:44):
It's in you.

>> Dave (16:44):
It's part of you now.

>> Julianna (16:46):
Okay, what are we going to rate? The Citra Jam
Single hop ipa.

>> Dave (16:50):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (16:51):
From Dancing Gnome. Good. Solid four. Yeah, I
think solid four.

>> Dave (16:55):
So far, so good. Yeah, I have a bad feeling about
worth. Oh, wait, now I think we got one more, then
I think what?

>> Julianna (17:04):
One more and then things go south.

>> Dave (17:05):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (17:06):
Is that what you're trying to say?

>> Dave (17:07):
Well, they're going to go north, which is the
problem.

>> Julianna (17:12):
Okay, next beer up for bids is from Forest in
Maine, another great Pennsylvania brewery. This
one is for Ambler, Pennsylvania. Um, which is
close to the Philadelphia neck of the woods. Yes.
And we have been there before. Really great place.
This is called the Dark Mild. It is only 3.8% ABV.

(17:37):
Wrap that one around your head, folks. Well,
hello, old friend, and nice dark mile to grace us
during March. Mildness granted. Okay, this is a
little bit later than March, but. Okay, fine,
whatever. We brewed this one with Maris otter and
a fun assortment of dark and roasted malt, and
hopped it with a bit of fuggles and Polaris hops.

(17:58):
So you're getting notes of pumpernickel, dried
fig, old library books, black currant jam, coffee
over ice, and some homemade biscuits. Now, doesn't
that description alone just sound yummy?

>> Dave (18:14):
That's. Yeah, that's very cool.

>> Julianna (18:16):
It is very cool. Speaking of which.

>> Dave (18:19):
Pardon M. No, 3.8%. That's just very Impressive,
you know, because that just goes against what
most. Now, I will say for a dark English mild,
that's exactly where you should be going.

>> Julianna (18:34):
Yes.

>> Dave (18:35):
3 to 4% ABV. Perfect sessionable beer where you
just go sit, you know, I, uh, would love to try it
on a. On a hand pump. I bet it's.

>> Julianna (18:48):
I bet it's phenomenal. Yes, like, absolutely.

>> Dave (18:52):
Now this one's. So it's. We got it. It's a little
old, you know, for. For a small beer.

>> Julianna (18:57):
Sure. But does it taste old?

>> Dave (18:58):
Not really. I think it may have lost a little bit,
but we've. It's been cold pretty much the whole
time, so it's.

>> Julianna (19:05):
It's.

>> Dave (19:06):
I don't think it's had a chance to fall off too
much still. That, uh, when you said coffee on ice,
I really get a lot of that. Like a little bit of
roast, a little bit of chocolate in there. I don't
get so much of the dark fruit. Um, maybe if it
warms up a.

>> Julianna (19:24):
Little bit, you would get a little bit more of
that, you know.

>> Dave (19:29):
But a great amount of flavor for. For a beer of
this size. And you could just keep drinking them.

>> Julianna (19:38):
Oh, gosh, yes. Like, and it doesn't taste watery.
You know how you would think that such a low ABV
beer would be? Yeah. Uh, um, there's just. It
packs a big punch, I think. Anyways.

>> Announcer (19:52):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (19:53):
Um, well, we will return with more musings in just
a minute. Welcome back, everyone. Today's episode
is kind of cool. Um, or at least I think so,
because we know that you have all been there when
you're going to pick out some beer at the beer

(20:15):
store and, uh, you get lost in the selection and
you're on a time crunch, you want to pick up
something that's going to be good, you want to
pick up something new and what do you do? Where do
you go? How do you.

>> Dave (20:32):
You're the pretty boy.

>> Julianna (20:33):
Exactly. So you get the pretty cans and then you
pray that it's all going to work out. And so far I
think we've done pretty good, right? Yes. So right
before the break, we started talking about the
Dark Mile from forest in Maine, uh, in Ambler,
Pennsylvania. And we were just talking about how

(20:56):
for such a low abv, and I mean, this is like,
shocking, right? At, uh, 3.8% that it's got so
much flavor. And it's very palatable, too.

>> Dave (21:08):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (21:09):
Yes. And what would you drink? I mean, what would
you eat?

>> Dave (21:13):
I have some. Some pub food with this or something.
Yes. Right. Fish and chips or some shepherd's
piece.

>> Julianna (21:20):
M. And there are plenty of good pubs in and around
that area. Um, how about that one near, um,
Lancaster that we went to, like.

>> Dave (21:32):
Yeah, the Bull.

>> Julianna (21:35):
Yeah, the one in Latituds.

>> Dave (21:37):
Oh, uh, yes. You can't see that. Yeah.

>> Julianna (21:40):
So good, though.

>> Dave (21:41):
No, this is good. I would again, I, uh, know
Forest and Maine. They do some beers on cask, so
it would be great.

>> Julianna (21:48):
Gosh.

>> Dave (21:48):
To try a cask version of this on the pump.

>> Julianna (21:51):
Yeah, it really. It really would. Um, now,
speaking of the can art. Okay. The can art, this,
uh, one drew me in, I'm not gonna lie. And it's
not that it's, like, outlandish. It's got, like, a
green top and then, like, green on the upper half.
The lower half is kind of like this golden rod and

(22:15):
brown kind of wavy thing. And then it just has
mild, like the sun.

>> Dave (22:20):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (22:21):
And I don't know, I looked at this, and without
even knowing what it was, I just thought, vintage
London M like, such a vibe. And it was like, yep,
I'm getting it for that.

>> Dave (22:33):
I could see that I was.

>> Julianna (22:34):
And I.

>> Dave (22:35):
Some reason that reminds me of the Electric
Company.

>> Julianna (22:37):
But the show.

>> Dave (22:38):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (22:39):
He's. Well, I mean, in a vintage 70s ish.

>> Dave (22:44):
Yeah. You know, all the graphics, they used to
have, like, little cartoons.

>> Julianna (22:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, sure. Well, I guess we're
both on the same sort of wavelength now. Does the
can art live up to the beer? Does the beer live up
to the can art?

>> Dave (22:58):
I'd say, yeah. Yeah. I think. I think they're both
cool. I think, um, the beer might be better. The
can art. But. Okay, the can art's pretty darn
cool.

>> Julianna (23:10):
But either way, I think this is another win for
us.

>> Dave (23:13):
This is one where the inside, the outside are both
winners.

>> Julianna (23:16):
Yes. And. And, uh, God bless. I. I mean, a mild is
just so delightful and so easy, uh, you know, to
drink.

>> Dave (23:25):
And I would say that 3.8% mild has almost as much
flavor. Is that 8% top of box, Right? Yeah.

>> Julianna (23:35):
Yeah, that makes. Yeah, that makes sense.

>> Dave (23:37):
Not as much body, obviously.

>> Julianna (23:39):
Sure. But still so much flavor.

>> Dave (23:42):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (23:43):
And it's still like. And it kind of lingers.

>> Dave (23:45):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (23:45):
Right. Yep, yep, yep, yep. I. Solid, solid. This
one we're going to rate a 5. This is absolutely
beautiful.

>> Dave (23:55):
All right, well, that concludes the good beer
portion of this episode.

>> Julianna (24:04):
What are you trying to say?

>> Dave (24:06):
I should have saved some of that mild in my cup
for to wash some of this next one down. Okay,
look, I'm prejudging. I Know it's a bad idea. But
the can art on this thing is. I don't know if it's
cool, but it's eye catching.

>> Julianna (24:24):
It is very eye catching.

>> Dave (24:26):
Stop me sign stuff around me.

>> Julianna (24:28):
Very, very eye catching. Okay, so this is called.
This is from Flying Monke Monkeys.

>> Dave (24:35):
Okay.

>> Julianna (24:37):
And this is called Joy Flying Monkeys.

>> Dave (24:40):
Craft brewery in Barry, Ontario, Canada.

>> Julianna (24:44):
Yes. This is an orange cream chocolate stout.

>> Dave (24:50):
So you know how you get those, uh, Russell, uh,
Stover mix candy things, and like, you. You never
know which one's gonna be the. The ones you don't
want.

>> Julianna (25:03):
Sure.

>> Dave (25:05):
Then you bite it and then you're like, ah, uh,
God, I got the cream one. Yeah. Okay, so this has.
This smells like orange cream. Like they nailed it
as far as the aroma. Yeah.

>> Julianna (25:15):
Okay. This is 7% ABV. It's bittersweet dark
chocolate layers that curl around a stash of
creamy vanilla and zesty orange, releasing an
exquisitely layered stout. In sips of joy.

>> Dave (25:30):
They are dead on with the aroma. I, um, mean, you.
You could wave one of those pieces of candy under
my nose and it would not smell any more like it.

>> Julianna (25:42):
And you were thinking Russell Stover all the way.

>> Dave (25:44):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (25:46):
Cow.

>> Dave (25:50):
Tastes like it too.

>> Julianna (25:51):
God.

>> Dave (25:52):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (25:53):
Super creamy. Yeah, super creamy.

>> Dave (26:00):
Like, do you, like, like orange and chocolate is a
thing and I don't know why.

>> Julianna (26:06):
Oh, I think it's great. So years ago, for
Christmas, every year.

>> Dave (26:11):
They have those orange.

>> Julianna (26:13):
Exactly. They were. I don't. I forget where they
were from, but it looked like an orange. Like it
was in the shape of an orange. And then you, like,
smacked it on the table a few times and it would
break into individual orange slices. Um, I was a
fan of the dark chocolate. My mom liked the milk
chocolate a bit more.

>> Dave (26:30):
But with the orange flavoring.

>> Julianna (26:32):
Yeah, but with the orange flavoring. And it was
just enough orange to just sort of complement the
chocolate. And it wasn't. It was Terry's. But I
don't know where Terry was from. Yeah, Um, I don't
know that I feel the same way about this one. Is
there anything about this? This tastes realistic.

>> Dave (26:52):
Uh, yeah, it's exactly. I've. I've never been able
to eat a whole one of those candies, the orange
cream ones. Um, but this has the chocolate, it's
got the cream, it's got the orange, and there's a
little bit of bitter on the back. But, like, it's.

(27:21):
They nailed it. I don't know why they wanted to
make this, but they did a spot on job of it. Like,
I cannot Throw any shade as far as that goes on.

>> Julianna (27:32):
Uh, this.

>> Dave (27:32):
Okay, now, do I like it? I do not.

>> Julianna (27:36):
Okay, fine.

>> Dave (27:37):
But this is. It's just strictly preference on the
taste.

>> Julianna (27:42):
So the can art on this is. I. Okay. Sadly, it is
what drew me to this can. Like, without knowing
anything about anything.

>> Dave (27:50):
It's crazy looking.

>> Julianna (27:52):
It is. It is crazy looking. It's got an orange
background, and it has chocolate candies of
various sorts, like a Russell Stover mixed box, if
you will.

>> Dave (28:03):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (28:03):
And then right in the center is a squirrel holding
an orange. How could you not love that? And then,
uh, I know a dead.

>> Dave (28:13):
Parrot when I see one, and I'm.

>> Julianna (28:15):
Looking at one right now, and it's Flying Monkey
Brewery. I mean, how could you not love the logo
of the flying monkeys?

>> Dave (28:26):
Let me. You know, I'm gonna drink some more of it.

>> Julianna (28:28):
Oh, wow.

>> Dave (28:30):
I. I still don't like it.

>> Julianna (28:31):
That's impressive. You still don't like it, but
you're drinking more.

>> Dave (28:34):
There's just. I'm, um. I'm so impressed with how
they made something so terrible, but it was
exactly what they wanted to do.

>> Julianna (28:45):
Well, that's wrong.

>> Dave (28:48):
Terrible to me. Okay. Like, uh, other people like
you, you obviously like it because you like orange
chocolate, so.

>> Julianna (28:58):
I like orange chocolate. I just don't know that I
like this because there seems to be an artificial
chemical enos that is just throwing.

>> Dave (29:06):
You think there's not artificial chemicals? And
Terry. You think Terry didn't put some artificial
stuff in his chocolate oranges? Half of what was
in Terry's chocolate orange came in a barrel.

>> Julianna (29:18):
Okay, what would you pair with this?

>> Dave (29:20):
Nothing. Sadness.

>> Julianna (29:23):
Sadness. Okay. What are we reading?

>> Dave (29:28):
This gallon of that mild beer.

>> Julianna (29:31):
We are reading this. I give it a three because
they.

>> Dave (29:34):
Did what they wanted to do.

>> Julianna (29:35):
They did. They did. I don't know that this
matches. On the inside is the outside.

>> Dave (29:39):
Stick to maple syrup. Canada.

>> Julianna (29:40):
Yeah. I think this one is the dud. So far out of
the. Like.

>> Dave (29:46):
I. Yeah, I don't know. You know, I don't know. I
don't know what to think now.

>> Julianna (29:50):
You don't know what to think? Well, we'll be back
with more in just a minute. Welcome back,
everyone.

>> Announcer (30:02):
Foreign.

>> Julianna (30:05):
We're getting over our taste buds. So today's
episode is a. Is it as pretty on the inside as it
is on the outside? Meaning we've all been going.
We've all been there, where we go to the store and
we don't know what to get. And we may pick out a
couple that are.

>> Dave (30:24):
Do you get lured in by A pretty face.

>> Julianna (30:27):
Yes. Meaning the can art. You get lured in by the
canar, you bring it back and you hope that things
go well. Yeah, and sometimes they really do.

>> Dave (30:37):
Sometimes they do.

>> Julianna (30:38):
And sometimes they really don't.

>> Dave (30:40):
Sometimes they do not.

>> Julianna (30:41):
Yeah. And I think overall might have to vomit
this. I think overall we've done well so far.

>> Dave (30:47):
Sure.

>> Julianna (30:48):
Okay, next up for bids is going to be from North
Haven, Connecticut. And this is Dark places. It's
a 13 abv imperial stout with chocolate, vanilla
beans, and ancho chilies.

>> Dave (31:07):
Yikes. It's from Abomination.

>> Julianna (31:10):
Yes, from Abomination.

>> Dave (31:11):
They're like one of those heavy metal breweries.
Probably like a droit theory and Three Floyds.

>> Julianna (31:19):
Oh, this is deliciously smooth.

>> Dave (31:22):
Very smooth, very viscous.

>> Julianna (31:24):
Mhm.

>> Dave (31:25):
A little bit of heat on the back end.

>> Julianna (31:28):
It just coats every tooth in my mouth. It's great.

>> Dave (31:35):
It's got that. If it had cinnamon in it, it would
have that Mexican cake. Mexican chocolate cake.
We're gonna vibe. But without that, it's just, um.

>> Announcer (31:49):
Very.

>> Dave (31:50):
Big, sweet dessert kind of beer with some heat.

>> Julianna (31:56):
Yeah, with a little bit of heat just to give it a
little edge.

>> Dave (32:01):
It actually, that little bit of heat from the
chilies kind of helps cut the sweetness a little
bit.

>> Julianna (32:09):
Okay. Yeah. And helps kind of finish it. Yeah. Uh,
without super lingering. Yeah, No, I think it's a
great idea, and I think it was restrained.

>> Dave (32:17):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (32:18):
It's not like, heavy.

>> Dave (32:19):
M. Yeah. I couldn't drink a lot of this, you know,
13. I mean, well, but even beyond 13, it's. It's
so thick. And like, there's. The flavors are very
intense. Like the chocolate and the vanilla is
very intense in this beer. Okay, so they wanted
something big. Yeah.

>> Julianna (32:41):
Big and bold. And that's what they got is
something big. Big and bold.

>> Dave (32:45):
Like if you had like, some cheesecake or like a
Boston cream pie or something. Something M. You
need something kind of to offset some of this
darkness, you know?

>> Julianna (32:58):
So Sam Heimer is the one that came up with the can
art for this.

>> Dave (33:04):
Yeah.

>> Julianna (33:04):
And I was drawn into this because. Well, I'm not
gonna lie. I mean, I'm a fan of skulls.

>> Dave (33:13):
I think Sam's got some personal things he's
probably dealing with, but I don't know.

>> Julianna (33:18):
I think it's kind of kitschy. I mean, there's a
black cat. There's an alleyway with two trick or
treaters. There's a lot of skulls that are there
to protect those trick or treaters.

>> Dave (33:30):
I don't think the skulls are there to protect the
trick or treaters.

>> Julianna (33:33):
What? It's a very wholesome looking piece of can
art.

>> Dave (33:38):
No.

>> Julianna (33:39):
Okay, fine. It gave me Danzig vibes. I was like, I
was. I was digging it once again. Why are you
saying you got a problem with Danzig?

>> Dave (33:48):
I, uh, know he'd punch me in the face if I had a
problem with it. I'm not trying to mess with
dancing.

>> Julianna (33:53):
It just calls out to my metal music loving.

>> Dave (33:59):
Yeah, but let's be fair. The metal you listen to
isn't strictly metal.

>> Julianna (34:07):
Okay.

>> Dave (34:08):
It's British metal.

>> Julianna (34:09):
Okay, so sometimes Pantera is not British. I do
listen.

>> Dave (34:15):
You're scared of Pantera?

>> Julianna (34:16):
Are you kidding? Pantera rocks. Um, okay, so the.
The can art is kind of like stark stark. And this
is kind of stark too. Like, I. I see how it does
go together.

>> Dave (34:32):
Yeah, no, they match.

>> Julianna (34:34):
And, um, this might not be the best beer to drink
in the heat, but I am enjoying it, though.

>> Dave (34:41):
It'll help you sleep through the hot summer day.

>> Julianna (34:43):
Yeah? Yeah.

>> Dave (34:44):
You think it'll put you down?

>> Julianna (34:46):
It'll put you down. Okay, what would you pair this
with?

>> Dave (34:49):
Like I said, like maybe some, some light cheese or
cheesecake or.

>> Julianna (34:53):
Okay.

>> Dave (34:54):
Something to kind of cut through the sweetness a
little bit, but.

>> Julianna (34:56):
Sure.

>> Dave (34:57):
But also just to balance out the darkness.

>> Julianna (35:02):
Balance out the darkness, yeah. Okay.

>> Dave (35:06):
Yeah. What would you, uh, what would you have with
it?

>> Julianna (35:09):
Um, Mascarpone? I would have some sort of. Yeah,
cheesecake kind of thing. Um, I don't know, maybe.
Maybe a really heavily roasted, like, crusted meat
of some sort.

>> Dave (35:24):
Maybe.

>> Julianna (35:25):
I don't know.

>> Dave (35:26):
Yeah, maybe.

>> Julianna (35:27):
Cuz I'm weird like that. You are weird, but I'm
digging this. I'm digging this. And what shall we
rate the dark places? Imperial Stout from
Abomination in North Haven.

>> Dave (35:39):
This or that? I don't know.

>> Julianna (35:40):
I'm going four.

>> Dave (35:41):
All right.

>> Julianna (35:41):
I think it's going four. Yep. I'm going four.
Okay. Last but certainly not least, could be. What
are you talking about? We are going to the. You're
not you when you're thirsty. Snickers Porter from

(36:04):
Beer Tree Brew in Port Crane, New York.

>> Dave (36:08):
There you go.

>> Julianna (36:09):
Yes.

>> Dave (36:10):
Okay, so you know, like, Snickers had those
commercials. Like, you know, you're not you when
you're hungry. Mhm. The best one was Betty White
playing football.

>> Julianna (36:18):
Oh, my gosh, that was hysterical.

>> Dave (36:21):
Um, we did cover Beer Tree Brew, uh, a couple
seasons ago. Very nice flight. Uh, I think we
were, we were overall very impressed with them.

>> Julianna (36:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.

>> Dave (36:35):
Um, this is nice. So rare, like, I don't know how
you do it. But like, they, they bring out the
taste of peanut, like very realistically, you
know, and peanuts have a lot of oil and fat and,
um, stuff. And like, they tend to create spoilage,

(36:56):
you know, so you have to be careful with how you
do it.

>> Julianna (36:58):
Sure.

>> Dave (36:59):
And a lot of breweries will use like that powdered
peanut butter stuff or whatever. Well, like, I
don't know what they did, but like, it tastes like
a Snickers, man. It's. It's like really tastes
like a Snicker.

>> Julianna (37:09):
Right. And it's, it's this enticing porter that
takes inspiration from the beloved Snickers Candy
Bar is 5.9 ABV, which I found interesting that
it's only 5.9 because I think it's great.

>> Dave (37:21):
That's a great wheelhouse for it to be in.

>> Julianna (37:23):
Mhm.

>> Dave (37:24):
I would pair this with the Snickers.

>> Julianna (37:27):
Okay.

>> Dave (37:28):
That would be good.

>> Julianna (37:28):
Man. I wish. I probably would be good, right?
Yeah. Uh, yeah, but just a good, like a solid
porter.

>> Dave (37:36):
Solid porter. Very chocolatey. Nice. Like I said,
the, the, the peanut comes out and I think that's
the most impressive part to me. But it does have
like a little bit of the nougat and the caramel
and, and all the little parts of the Snickers. I
think they nailed it pretty well.

>> Julianna (37:52):
Yeah, it's really good. And the can art obviously
is right.

>> Dave (37:56):
It's right there.

>> Julianna (37:56):
If ever there was can art that was made for this
beer, it's this. Because it's a candy bar and
instead of saying Snickers, it says beer tree.

>> Dave (38:03):
Yeah. Great.

>> Julianna (38:04):
Solid. We are going to rate this a 4.

>> Announcer (38:07):
Uh.

>> Julianna (38:11):
And that is going to do it for us today.

>> Dave (38:14):
Nice.

>> Julianna (38:14):
What a cool little episode.

>> Dave (38:16):
Yeah, man. Yeah. It was a great little flight.

>> Julianna (38:18):
And some good beer too.

>> Dave (38:19):
Yeah. And. And then the Canadian one, so.

>> Julianna (38:22):
Oh, stop. Whatever. Okay. Well, good old boy Dave,
thanks for being here.

>> Dave (38:27):
Hey, thanks for letting me be here.

>> Julianna (38:31):
This is good old gal Juliana. Thanks for joining

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
