Speaker 1 (01:11):
Terror The Grave City Library, Part one written by Scott Donnelly,
narrated by Darren Marler. Smoky gray clouds hung stunted over

(01:33):
Grove City, Ohio, missing the cars and sidewalks up and
down Broadway. The air was cold, tainted with the smell
of damp leaves and wet earth. Darren Miller exited his
car parked along the street and covered his head with
his raincoat. He jogged by a line of storefronts where
twinkling orange lights highlighted the vintage bistyle halloween decorations clung

(01:56):
to their windows. Darren hurried up the concrete steps of
the Growth City Library, a large, beautiful wavy structure wrapped
in glass and brick, and into the building just as
a rumble of thunder rolled ominously in the clouds above,
as if it were forecasting dread. He let the hood
of his raincoat fall to his back as he looked around.

(02:17):
The library was dead. Darren had barely checked his watch
when a gentle voice came over the loudspeaker. The library
will close in five minutes. Darren removed his raincoat to
reveal a backpack underneath, Slung over just one of his shoulders.
Inside of it was everything he would need for the night,
his laptop, some snacks, and a camera. A neatly dressed

(02:39):
employee of the library turned the quarter from just up ahead.
She'd heard the door open and wanted to make sure
that whoever had just come in knew they had mere
minutes until a library would be closing for the night.
But when she saw who it was, she stopped and
crossed her arms. Well, she said, you are actually doing this,
Darren smiled, Hey, Casey. Hi. Darren Casey Cox was the

(03:05):
assistant director of the Grove City Library. She'd been able
to pull the appropriate strings that allowed Darren to perform
his little, unorthodox experiment, one that had been six months
in the making. It was an overnight's stay at the
library to prove or disprove the accusations of it being
haunted by ghosts. Casey's arms remained across her midsection. I

(03:27):
don't know what you're expecting to find here. I've worked
here for a while now, and I've never seen or
heard anything out of the ordinary. That's because you work here,
Darren said. Your job is to come in and well
do your job. My job as a writer is to research,
deep dive, and exaggerate. Casey interrupted, don't make our library

(03:48):
seem like some ghoul factory. Remember, we want people to
come here, not be scared away by ghosts and goblins.
Darren winked with a hint, playful arrogance. I can guarantee
you there are no goblins here, he said. Ghosts. On
the other hand, Well, the deep diving research I've done
has told me everything I need to know about this

(04:11):
place and its spectral dwellers. Casey rolled her eyes. If
you say so, Darren, the library is now closed. The
gentle voice cracked over the loud speaker again, and with
that announcement, Darren set up as makeshift desk for the
night at a study table close to the grandiose glass
Broadway entrance to the building. Within five minutes, the staff

(04:34):
started to leave per Darren's request. The lights were left on,
but the security system was activated. If anyone tried to
get in, the alarm would go off. If anyone tried
to get out, the alarm would go off. But Darren
had no plans to get out, no plans to leave.
He was strong in his desire to spend the night

(04:55):
thrilled and excited at the prospect of capturing the ghosts
that haunted the groves the library on camera and writing
a new thrilling mystery novel about them. Yes, Darren had
no plans, no plans at all, to leave the library
that night. But two hours later, the security alarm was

(05:15):
blaring and the police arrived on scene with their sirens
wailing in blue lights spinning. The glass entrance that faced
Broadway was shattered from the inside. Shards of it covered
the entryway like an elegant glass carpet, inviting the authorities
into a bizarre mystery. Darren was gone, the library was
cast in darkness, and a deep, glitching, haunting voice skipped

(05:38):
over the loudspeaker on repeat. The library is now kokak closed.
The library is assist now plupluck cut closed. That the
library is miss now clupp pluck cluck closed. Sean Dyer
sat in the backseat of his Uncle Curtis and Aunt

(05:58):
Jade's car, squashed between his own parents. His body was uncomfortable,
his legs were stiff, and his arms were scrunched, but
he kept trying to remind himself that this was all
his idea. The teacher's conference had given them a day
off of school down in North Carolina the day before Halloween,
and Sean was able to sweep talk his parents into

(06:18):
flying up to Ohio to spend a long, spooky weekend
with Uncle Curtis and Aunt Jade. Sean was willing to
bet that most kids his age wouldn't beg their parents
to fly to the Midwest to visit family for a
long weekend. It'd probably choose some sort of amusement park
or a last attempt at a beach getaway before autumn
started to tease an inevitable winter weather takeover. But not Sean,

(06:43):
not after what he had gone through last October when
he spent a couple of days with his aunt and uncle.
As the car veered off the freeway and on to
State at Route sixty two, things started to look familiar again.
The smile spread across his face, even in his squashed state.
Be Welcome to Grove City sign was off to his right,
surrounded by trees that were dropping their red and orange

(07:05):
leaves like rain in the autumn breeze. The festival fall
flags that hung from the light poles up and down
the street guided them into the small, lively downtown area
of Grove City. Sean remembered this part of the city well.
It was where Tammy's Pizza was still to this day
the best pizza he'd ever tasted. Across from Tammy's was

(07:25):
the library. The library was the number one reason he
wanted to visit Grove City for the long weekend in
the first place. But as they passed the library, Sean
grew a bit uneasy. He loosened himself from between his
parents and sat forward as much as a seat belt
would allow him to, and looked out the window. Police

(07:45):
tape had been strung across the entrance to the library,
and where one of the glass doors should have been
was now a tall, upright slab of plywood with a
printed sign that said use other entrance. What happened to
the library, Sean asked, interrupting the NonStop conversations that his
parents were having with his aunt and uncle. The adults

(08:06):
all stopped talking and quickly glanced at it as they
drove by. I'd to do, Uncle Curtis said, maybe you're
break it or some Halloween shedeedigans. That was all Uncle
Curtis had come up with before the library. It was
in the rear view mirror. Sean faced forward again, unsatisfied
with his uncle's indifferent answer. The car pulled on to

(08:29):
Kingston Avenue next, before making a fairly quick turn onto
the street where Uncle Curtis and Aunt Jade lived. The
car slowed to a crawl and finally pulled into the driveway,
putting the library briefly out of his mind. Sean smiled
again as he saw the house was richly decorated for Halloween.
As they all filed out of the car, Sean admired
the surrounding homes. They were all decorated. Spooky inflatables took

(08:54):
up generous portions at the front yards. Silky spiderwebs were
draped around porches car to jack the lanterns sat on
hay bales and cheese cloth. Ghosts were strung from some
of the leafless branches of the trees, swaying back and
forth with a hypnotic swagger. It wasn't long before Sean
turned his attention to the house next door, the house

(09:14):
where Reese, the vampire bent on wiping out Grove City's
werewolf population, lived just a year earlier. The pit sank
in Sean's stomach as he remembered the horrors of what
had happened in that house. He'd been trapped in the attic,
nearly killed by Reese. That was, of course, until two
werewolves charged in with a vengeance and turned the undead

(09:38):
villain to ash. Sean thought it was ironic, however, that
one of the spooky inflatables which lined the street was
in Reese's old yard, and it just so happened to
be a cartoony version of Dragula. That meant someone new
lived in the house. The same house that was home

(09:58):
to a vampire for ca countless years. The curtains on
one of the side windows moved slightly, and Sean caught
a glimpse of something inside. A girl. Perhaps it was
hard to tell. She was only there for a brief
moment before she disappeared and let the curtains fall back
into place. Bloody you, guys, Uncle Curtis announced, we'll discuss

(10:20):
some important things, like where to get lunch. Sean and
his parents grabbed the luggage from the car and followed
Uncle Curtis and Aunt Jade into the house. After lunch,
Sean was washing up in the bathroom when he heard
a dog barking outside. He didn't think much of it

(10:40):
at first, but the more and more it barked, he
wondered if someone had just left it outside and forgot
to bring it in. With his parents and aunt and
uncle sitting in the living room talking and laughing, Sean
decided to step outside for some fresh air and see
if he could locate the dog. He didn't see it
at first, but hear it. He walked around to the

(11:02):
back of the house and that's when he found it,
and he couldn't believe his eyes. Sean knew this dog.
He'd seen this dog before a year ago. It was
Reese's dog, Bongo. When Bongo laid eyes on Sean, he
stopped barking and started to frantically wag his tail. It
was behind the chain link fence of the neighbor's house,
Reese's former house. Did Bongo never leave or was Reese? No,

(11:28):
he couldn't be back, Sean thought. The back door of
the neighbor's house opened, and a young girl with short
black hair about Sean's age stepped out and whistled for
the dog. Here, Bongo, here, boy, she called. Bongo listened
and ran back to her and into the house. She
closed the door, but remained outside, staring at Sean. New

(11:52):
to the neighborhood, she asked from the back porch. Sean
shook his head. Nah, just visit in my aunt and uncle.
The girl nodded, Is Bungo yours? Sean asked, yeah, he
uh kinda came with the house, the girl said. Sean
cocked his head with a confused sperk explain, he said.

(12:15):
The girl stepped off the back porch and approached the
chain link fence, where Sean was just on the other side.
We moved here back in January, she said. Since the
first night we spent here, that dog has been at
the front door barking like crazy. This calnder said his
name was Bongo, and according to our neighbors, your aunt
and uncle, I guess Bongo used to live with the
guy that was here before, but he obviously bailed and

(12:38):
must not like dogs very much. Sean smiled. This girl
doesn't know how right she is. He thought, I met
the guy who lived here, Sean said, I did some
work in his attic last fall. Is that mirror still there?
The girl was slightly off put. No, we got rid
of everything that was here, the guy I left everything.

(13:01):
What a weirdo he definitely was, Sean said, extending his hand.
I'm Sean Dyer. The girl shook his hand with a smile.
Lucy Lucy Buxton. The cool breeze blew through the backyards.
Fallen leaves skittered across the ground, and the ones that
remained on the tree branches rustled gently. Wait you did

(13:22):
work in the attic last fall, Lucy asked, with intrigue.
Sean nodded, so were you hearing Grove City when the werewolf?
The facts were happening, Sean clammed up. He wasn't sure
what to say, but knew that Lucy could probably notice
the unease on his face. Had you know about that?

(13:42):
Are you from around here? Sean asked? Lucy shook her head. No,
we moved here from the East Coast. But I had
an incident at the library back in the spring that
made me take a deep dive into Grove City's supernatural
goings on. The library, Sean said, thinking back to when
he first read about the possible library haunting from the

(14:05):
paper his uncle sent him to his own obsessive research
over the past year, and then actually seeing it in
person with crime scene tape strung across the entrance. That's
why I'm here, Sean said the library. Lucy was confused.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
What do you mean?

Speaker 1 (14:20):
I was here for the werewolves? I Sean stopped himself
as he felt his excitement swelling you what? Lucy encouraged
him to continue. Sean looked at her. Lucy had also
experienced some sort of supernatural incident in Grove City, specifically
the library. Sean waged his options and finally settled on

(14:41):
complete transparency. If I tell you something, will you keep
it a secret? Sean whispered. Lucy nodded and leaned closer,
intrigued and ready for anything her new friend had to say.
I met the werewolves, he continued. The final battle was
right here in your house. The guy that lived there, Reese,
he was a vampire who was trying to kill them.

(15:04):
Lucy's eyes widened as Sewn seamlessly continued. Ever since then,
I've been obsessed with a supernatural I live in North Carolina,
but I couldn't help myself from digging into Grove City's
spooky lore over the past year. There is so much
of it. I know I've been doing the same thing,
Lucy said. Did you know some people call it Grave

(15:25):
City because of all the horror that lies just beneath
its innocent looking surface. Sean smiled again. He couldn't believe
the conversation he was having. It was unreal, unexpected. This
long Halloween weekend had just gotten even better. But then
the pitt returned to his stomach when he recalled the
crime scene tape at the library. When we drove into

(15:47):
town just a shure while ago, we passed the library.
There was police tape up and one of the windows
was covered with plywood Lucy nodded, they know the news
is reporting a break in overnight, but that's not true
at all. Sean burrowed his brow. What do you mean.
After my incident in the spring, I was told to

(16:09):
contact the local author named Darren Miller, who may have
also seen some things at the library. He hadn't, but
he was intrigued by what I told him and said
it'd make for a good story. A couple months went
by and he reached out to me again to say
that he'd gotten permission to do an overnight investigation at
the library. The investigation was set for last night. Then

(16:30):
this morning the news report said that there was a
break in at the library. Don't mention at all of Darren.
And do you want to know the weirdest part, Sean nodded.
Of course, Darren's social media accounts are gone, wiped clean,
nowhere to be found. The string of emails he sent
me gone, not in spam, the trash, nowhere. It's like

(16:50):
he doesn't even exist anymore. That doesn't make any sense,
Sean said, I know, it's like something in the library.
Uh absorbed him, completely erasing him from existence. Sean wasn't
sure what to say, and all the research she'd done,
not once did something like this come up. Now, Sean

(17:12):
was even more curious about what Lucy had experienced back
in the spring. What happened to you with the library?
What did you see? Lucy took a deep breath and
Sean noticed her nerves quiver as she exhaled, and she asked,
have you ever heard of Kreeger? The Creeper? Thank you
