Speaker 1 (00:01):
Inside Netball getting you closer to the game you love
with Nadine Wilson, Annah Stanley and Jenny Woods so By News.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Talks at Me Judder and welcome to Inside Nipple. Today
we're joined by one of, in fact two of nipples
fiercest competitors, competitors and all round game changes.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Two silver Ferns, two.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Defensive powerhouses, Cuttenberger and the Kayla Soklitch Beats, and both
known for their relentless work. If it's smart, speed and
signature hustle, and they're building towards a huge Grand Final
which is just around the corner. What's it going to
take to win that one? We hear from these two

(00:41):
very shortly. First, the tactics they got there. It was
close gen in the elimination final. At halftime, it was
the pulse that were up and then all of a
sudden momentum swing and here came the tactics.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Well, I loved it. I What I couldn't get over though,
was that, you know, it was somebody said, you know,
the old cliche game of two halves, But man, the
way Tiana Maturo was putting in the long ball to
Wormsley in the first half. Bo her passing was so quick,
and I have to say, you know, I was thinking, Okay,
she doesn't shoot many goals, but boy, her delivery is outstanding.

(01:18):
But then it kind of changed, and I wonder if
Tactics kind of worked her out. And that two point
shot of tp selby Rickett just you know, on halftime,
I think that really galvanized the Tactics and they were away.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
And also I think a big shift was defensively the
Tactics started to stand out Burger shifting back into gold offense.
I don't know, she just needed that sort of first
first half to warm up.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
And then by gosh, they really suffocated the.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Pulse because you know, up until in that first half,
what Warmsley was averaging fourteen fifteen goals. In the second half,
you know, she was only averaging third quarter eight, fourth
quarter four. And so to me that suggests the Tactics
defense just smothered. And you know you talk about the
Tuto feeding Warmsley Gordon as well. Boy she just got
the ball turned into Warmsley. So and to think that,

(02:11):
you know, there were ten goals ahead in that last quarter,
was it the Tactics posted well to bring it back
to five.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
They did it with those two point shots.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Look, last week we were quite critical of the Tactics
defense for not double marking Wollom. You know, the ball
was just whipping into Wollom. That was the difference I
saw in the second half. The Tactics were quite deliberately
double marked Warmsley at times and let Matuito or mally Sala,
Will you guys hang out there?

Speaker 1 (02:39):
You can't shoot from outside the circle.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
So I thought that was clever and I wonder if
they'll take that into this week. I also I listened
to Cuttenberger after the match and she basically said, we throw.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Everything out at our time and we'd just go for it.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
And that's what it looked like they That is when
Cutton and Jane are so good, right, They're just everywhere
the arms, legs and and they came away with ball
and it was almost like all of a sudden, the
Pulse just didn't know where to put the ball in
gen And I wasn't surprised. I know you you speak
highly of Matudo in that first half, But things changed
for in the second half and I actually thought perhaps

(03:15):
they could have brought Malleysella on earlier. Oh do you think, yes,
I do think you do think obviously made a lot
of turnovers.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Yes, But what I was going to say is I
think that the Pulse have dealt all season with injuries
and illness at various times. And then it was the
number of substitutions they had to make. They made eighteen
in that game. The Tactics made one, so they knew
exactly what they were doing. There was a flow and

(03:43):
like we both talked about, you know, just that second
half was just a blur of red and I mean
they thoroughly deserved it, they really did. And yeah, as
for Maturiro, see, I found that quite reassuring. I did
think that Maturo should have been taken off earlier. But
then you did only have Melli Sella to put on,
didn't you, which I'm not a Well, she's an impact plaeron.

(04:07):
She Melly seller comes on.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
For the for the for the two point shots which
she shot. I think, what did she get three or three?

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Three or four in? So she did her job.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
But I think, as you heard from Anna Andrews Tosola, she's,
you know, on reflection of the season, like it's been
quite an up and down season for the Pulse. They've
had sickness, they've had injuries, and she you know, explained
that at the end. So I think the best team
made got the win, and I'm happy that it's a
North versus South final. You know, we talk about the

(04:36):
Textics defense, Ali Bird, I'm sorry, was outstanding in that
second half. And if TP and Bird can nail and
we'll get into the more of the final chat in
a minute, if they are on song against the Mystics,
it will be close, could come down to the mid court.
But I thought, yeah, attacking wise, she was very impressive.
Forty seven from fifty five, eighty five percent she was.

(04:59):
And the other telling factor I thought at the end
of the game was you saw a lot of emotion
from the pulse.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
There were a.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Lot of tears and that kind of to on a
solo's point, A lot's gone down this season and you
can see that.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
You know, from the injury illness.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
It has been tough, and it was almost like that
exhausted you know that were gusted obviously not to make
the final, but you know you just almost saw it
coming out.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
That's what it felt like watching.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
I don't know if that's right, but that as a
viewer that's what it shows.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
Well, it's been a shorter, sharper season, hasn't it. It's
only been what ten rounds? Boom boom boom. You're aware
that you can't afford to drop any many any or
many games. A lot of pressure, a.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Lot of pressure. So yes, I agree, Tactics, they went unbeaten.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
I'm so yes. I've madeen at.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Home for the season and I love that when you're
getting such a big crowd that's supporting their team, and
they did.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
They were loud, so very very cool. North South.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Absolutely, Annie, it's going to be fabulous.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
It is. It is Grand Final week. So who should
we talk to?

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Well?

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Why from each camp?

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Kuttenberger, Michaela's Socklich beats in and they join us on
Inside Netball.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
The Inside Netball Podcast.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
How lucky are we?

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Not one guess, but two This week we're Kuttenberger from
the Tactics. Mikayla Sokolitch bets in from the Missis. Thank
you so much for joining us. One's got a big
jacket on, so it's obvious she's from the South Slash Current.
Although I'm saying that, Mickey, I think you might have
a bit of a jacket on there too. Yeah, I do,
but I actually am. I'm roasting, roasting, although it's been freezing. Yes,

(06:34):
I know we such Auckland as. Now look kind of
let's start with you. What a match that second half
against the Pulse. It was phenomenal. You yourself were outstanding. When
did you know that game was yours?

Speaker 5 (06:49):
Oh gosh, I think we just went into the game
knowing that was door dy. So personally, for me, I
never felt too stressed worried about the game, even though
our first half was as good as our second half.
I think we still executed a few quite a few
things really well, and so you just have to stay
positive about it, and you just have some of those

(07:09):
games where you feel really good and you just don't
worry about the score because you feel the momentum coming.
And I think then that second half it just took off.
So personally, I wasn't too worried that whole game. But
I don't know if Donald would say the same thing.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
The momentum certainly swung on that second half. Mackey.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
You had the luxury of having a weekend off, no
games as such.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
What did the mystics do to prepare?

Speaker 5 (07:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Actually, good we did have the weekend off. Did you
we needed it? Man? We tired bodies just we can
week out training that accumulative loan. We still trained on Saturday,
but we did it independently, so it was like a
real nice mental refresh for us.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
And well, I guess this is a question for both
of you. I mean, how significant is it that that
last time that your two teams met and you can
feel free to both answer this was the fact that
that was a that was a big result for the mystics.
Is that going to weigh on Karen on the tactics
heads not.

Speaker 5 (08:16):
Too much, to be honest, At the end of the day,
regardless of what happened throughout the season, is so how
you show up on the last game. So yes, there
is some things to take from it and learn from it,
but we're not too worried about what happened then, because
if we do all this work and we focus so
much but we don't show up on the day, then
none of that really matters and vice versa. So just

(08:38):
writing off everything because that's not really a game we
want to go back to, So just focusing on putting
out a good performance from our last one and Mickey.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
In contrast, did that give your side confidence? Coming away
with that such a big result? I actually couldn't agree
more with put In No, it's like that's been, that's gone.
Finals is such a different ball game. Like tactics bet
us by like more than ten. Midway through the season.

(09:09):
We bet them like it just comes down to the day. Mickey,
you've lost a couple of big names this year, and
we'll be honest here on insiddely for we didn't have
a couple of us, didn't have you in our top
three for that reason. How proud of you are in
your team as a whole that you're forged on and

(09:30):
really not mister beat Yeah, if I'm honest, you guys
really put a rocket up.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
We saw that like I'm gonna lie. We were like,
why would you do that?

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Why would anybody doubt our team when the like there's
still a really big core that is still there.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
We were like, I wouldn't do that.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
The other old mistakes a lot of experience that left though,
a lot of experience that left. So you must be
so proud of the ones that have, you know, the
the less experienced ones that have really stood up. But
then heaps of experience that came yeah, like yeah, wholly
over one hundred caps and now like an Ossie International
that's just a strong personality and anchor just and yeah,

(10:15):
honestly so proud the way that even someone like Katie,
who's in her third year, stepped up, Catherine Hall, even
Petter has taken on a massive leadership role. So regardless
of the outcome on the weekend, that there's some girls
that honestly can just be so happy with how they've
played all year. You both actually are both well gold
Defense wing Defenses Cardin. We saw Donna put a bit

(10:37):
of a spinner in the work she started with you
at wing defense. Mickey, we've seen you for the most
of the last couple of years playing wing defense. You're
now playing so well at gold Defense Carden. First, for you,
how did you think that slide worked switching across to
wing defense in Paris and at GD.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yeah, I guess playing a different position for me personally
allowed a little bit of a different perspective because I
don't know, Mickey might be saying, because Goldie wingder is
two very different things, and so being able to play
out the front and being able to see what's happening,
and then being going back into the back and knowing
where the hunts are.

Speaker 6 (11:14):
I think was very beneficial for me. And I guess
just changing things up.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
You know, everybody brings something different in every position, and
clearly that worked for us. So whether we do it
again or not, who knows. We'll leave that up to
the coach to decide. But I think mixing it up sometimes,
like Micky mentioned earlier, you know, we'd have tired bodies.
We've been training week in week out, and if you
keep doing the same thing, you need to keep getting
the same results. So sometimes you have to change things

(11:40):
up a little bit.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
And Mickey, you loving GD because you're playing really well.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Oh thank you.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
I like working with Catherine because I can just be
left at my own devices out there like poor girl.
I just do my thing and she's kind of on
her own. It seems to work for us, probably because
kat is also quite good at just doing her own role.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
So I like that aspect of it.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
It could be Mickey that Tapius Selby Rickett's probably one
of the well, one of the biggest threats along with
old Karen Berger there of the tactics. Do you think
it will that be your job on Sunday taking care
of her?

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Honestly, I don't know. I'm a bit like cut it.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
I'm just waiting for the coaches to let me know
where they think they might want me. But yeah, Teeps
has been awesome. All Yeah, I think I don't know
what it is. It's almost like she's just playing with
freedom and when she's on that whole attacking end is on.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
So yeah, someone's going to have to try and stop that.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Now there's a question here, and I think Eddie's added
this to our list of questions about a jar of
pickle juice. And I think this is directed at Cardon
And I know my boys get terrible cramp so I'm
guessing is this something you carry around for?

Speaker 3 (12:57):
What's with the pickle juice?

Speaker 5 (12:59):
Yeah, definitely, we've got a cramp's crew in our group.
I don't want to say it's the experience, but to be.

Speaker 6 (13:10):
Whether it works, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (13:11):
I haven't personally been part of that group before, but
we always Yep, game day pickle juice is important. It's
just you know, short straw about who's carrying it in
and out in the little cup.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Of the piles or have they been eaten. No, it's juice,
it's too Yeah, but.

Speaker 6 (13:26):
Whoever wants the pickles can take them home.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Mickey, you said earlier how much leadership Peter's showing down
that mid court. She is hugely influential in your side.
I mean, how much do you value her? Because you know,
a year and year out, we feel like we're constantly
talking about Petter and how good she is in that
wing attack position. Yet in that silver far and environment,
she often doesn't get selected. I mean, here's your chance

(13:54):
to tell everyone just how good she is. Yeah, I
guess because she doesn't like doing media, you guys don't
see a massive side of her. She has the biggest heart,
and she like anytime she speaks, it's with real purpose
and the whole group kind of hang on every word

(14:16):
she says. And she's someone who really motivates our group.
And it makes me sad that she hasn't been able
to kind of show the world how good she is.
And I do hope that this year is her year
where she can shine. If I was a selector, I
would have had her years ago. I think she's been
in our team wing attack Team of the virtually everywhere

(14:38):
every week We're like, do we choose anyone else?

Speaker 3 (14:40):
We're like, no, it's still better, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Jen?

Speaker 3 (14:43):
Yep?

Speaker 4 (14:43):
Now tell me. I think you two were both in
your respective teams four years ago when you last played
in the in the final. No you were there? Were
you injured?

Speaker 3 (14:53):
I was injured?

Speaker 4 (14:55):
Okay, Well in that case, Karen, I'll come to you.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
What you know.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
What are you remember about that game, because I suspect
it was a terrific final.

Speaker 6 (15:04):
It was.

Speaker 5 (15:05):
It was a really fun one. I know it was
at Spark Arena. I know that there was a lot
of blue in the crowd. We had spots of every
here and there. But I remember it being a really
tight game, and I think that's what you'd expect in
a finals game, you know, Thank goodness.

Speaker 6 (15:22):
I'm not an attacker.

Speaker 5 (15:23):
I don't want to be an attacker, but there's so
much emphasis on making sure that you actually just score
your own and then you know, defensively, you just have
to work your butt off to try and get some ball.
You don't really want it to be too much of
a defensive game because then that means your attackers aren't
doing their job. So I think at the end of
the day, it's a stressful time, but it's fun and

(15:46):
I think that's what makes it so much fun for
the crowd as well. And it's such such a tight game.
Each of your seat, you know, the crowds into it.
Every player is putting their body on the line. So
hopefully we can repeat that again this Sunday.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
So you've had a number of players this season step up,
cut in and these players to go into TP and
Jane and that've made themselves unavailable for the Silverns or
they have previously do. I mean TP in particular just
looks so refreshed. We talked to her a few weeks
ago and she's obviously loving having dons there. Do you

(16:21):
think the door with this eligibility chat all these things
is do you think that slightly opens a little more
for the likes of TP?

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Would she be tempted or hard to know?

Speaker 6 (16:33):
I guess it's.

Speaker 5 (16:34):
Quite hard because every player would have their own reasons
for making the decisions that they make. I think for
the outside world, it's quite hard for them to understand
that we're actually humans outside of NETFL sometimes, and yes
it is our job. We do get paid for it,
but it's a very physically demanding job and also very
mentally and emotionally, and so we put a lot of

(16:55):
our lives on hold outside of netball to try and
commit to this, and so everybody will be at different
playing fields in their lives around what they want for
their lives at whatever stage that is. Potentially this would
open up a new leachh you know, being able to
be in a different environment learning new things. Because Micky

(17:15):
will be able to probably speak to this as well,
that we're constantly at this level looking for development and
just being better and something new, and we just don't
want to be doing the same thing every day. We've
got high expectations of ourselves, not just as neckbullers but
as humans too, and so whatever that life looks like
for you outside, I think people need to try and
have a little bit more compassion when players tend to

(17:37):
make these decisions, and instead of just bashing them about
the decisions that they make, you know, where we want
to try and.

Speaker 6 (17:44):
Have a balance on both sides.

Speaker 5 (17:45):
And whether that looks about doing both or leaning towards
one or the other, I think that's up to the
players to decide.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
So would the eligibility rule, would either of you look
at going offshore Mickey you first, Honestly, I would be
very surprised if there would be an opening for men
overseas somewhere. They're probably look at me and think I'm
not that broken lady, But I love them as sex.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
That's where my heart is and I'm happy as staying here.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Got it.

Speaker 6 (18:15):
It's a tough one.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
There's a lot of things to consider, and it's really
not just as easy as yeah, you're allowed to go
do that now. It's like Mickey sid too. They'll have
their solid lineups, they'll have their players, they'll have their
development coming through. They've got an amazing clump. So whether
they even want any of our players, who knows. And
you know, there's a lot of Having mentioned there's a

(18:37):
process now and that it could be a tedious and
long process too, and where the players want to go
through that, who knows. So never say never. But yeah,
like I'm pretty I'm pretty happy with the technics too.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
Well, Karen too. For you, I mean, you've already made
one big move and I mean, how do you feel
South Africa coming here for the tiny Jemison? I mean
that must be quite a thrill.

Speaker 5 (19:01):
I'm really excited about it. To be honest, I love
seeing the young ones. I think there's so many young
ones in South Africa coming through now and it's so
exciting seeing that new talent and they're just ferocious and
they just want it so much and the desire whenever
they do.

Speaker 6 (19:16):
When I see them going on tours overseas, they just
love it so much.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
And I think sometimes us who travel a lot can
forget how grateful we need to be about being able
to do that.

Speaker 6 (19:28):
And you just when you see.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
Those players, just to me personally, I just that ignites
that that love for the game and the excitement again.

Speaker 6 (19:37):
So really looking forward to that game or that series.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Actually, we're going to get to some quick fire questions
that we love to throw at our fast five at
our guests. But before we get to that, and I
know it's hard because you're both on the line and
both listening to each other, but what is what can
you tell us that's going to be key for each
of your sides to take the win and come away
with the trophy this weekend you're waiting who's going to

(20:02):
go first?

Speaker 3 (20:04):
What do you reckon?

Speaker 2 (20:08):
I think the best thing about both missics and tactics,
And I said this to the tactics after our last
game against him, is we've both got not only seven
that will start the game, but we've got a bench
and a bench that can play.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
And I think that is.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
The secret Well, it's a secret weapon, I think for
both teams because coaches aren't afraid to make changes, but
they've got the people there to actually make the changes.
And I think that that might be like what makes
this game so incredibly tight?

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Cadam about you.

Speaker 5 (20:45):
I think that I mentioned it earlier. The key is
just to not throw away ball. And it's easy to say,
you know it's gonna be a lot of pressure, but
key is don't throw away ball, and for us defensively
is training it ball early. So you know, whatever that
looks like, we'll leave that to the coaches to figure
out strategies.

Speaker 6 (21:04):
But it's going to be a grind. It's going to
be a tough one.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
We hope it's going to be close. We love it
close one. It's so good for the crowds and we
know it's going to have a lot of passion and
fire so fast. Five questions we might go, We'll ask
it each time. It might go cut them first, and
then Mickey if that's okay.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
Inside nip balls, fast.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
Five, the very first one coming.

Speaker 2 (21:28):
You look nervous already.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
Like my mind changes all the time.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
That's good. That's good. Right.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
If you could compete in any other sport, what would
it be.

Speaker 6 (21:41):
Enis I want to be a tennis player.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
I love it, Mickey.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
Something low impact, something.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
That could be harder.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
My knees are okay, So it's I reckon lawn bowls.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
If you could, If you could take any three athletes
to dinner past or present, who would it be? Oh gosh,
so New Zealand or abroad?

Speaker 4 (22:12):
No restriction, Oh.

Speaker 5 (22:14):
Gosh, Serena Williams, Michael Jordan.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
I think we've had him. If Michael Jordan had a
lot of lebron.

Speaker 6 (22:29):
Oh gosh, you saying Bolt, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
We've had We've had all of those.

Speaker 3 (22:33):
I think we've had children.

Speaker 6 (22:35):
That's it's really hard. There's so there's too many.

Speaker 4 (22:38):
Oh that's yep, that's three may.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
I actually have no idea, but definitely some female.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Athletes who who have really dug deep and needed to
like kind of lead their own campaigns. I don't know
who they are, though, but yeah, some sort of female What.

Speaker 4 (22:58):
About Kathy Freeman.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
Yeah, we'll tuck.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Her in the gymnast, the gymnast American gymnasts. Yeah, actually, yeah,
like someone likes to moment. Yeah, she'd be good because
she Yeah, she's had to make some tough calls about
her career as well.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
People like that I think would be interesting. Karen's got
another one. Look she wants for I.

Speaker 6 (23:17):
Do I do because of fun? I want Alona ma.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Oh yeah yes, if I just don't do an Armory
saw there.

Speaker 6 (23:26):
The fun, that'll be a great chair.

Speaker 4 (23:27):
Great choice. Yes, now no, next question, who in your
team is most likely to get you into trouble and
then to get you out of trouble? So Karen you first.

Speaker 6 (23:46):
Potentially Charlie Fiddler.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
Yes, I'm not surprised.

Speaker 1 (23:49):
Endo trouble, how to trouble and.

Speaker 4 (23:53):
I love watching her on the sideline. Oh yes, oh
my goodness. Best cheerleader.

Speaker 5 (23:59):
Yeah, great vibes. She definitely keeps up the chilling and
crew out of trouble. Oh gosh, I think it'll be
either either Jane or Ali.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
We've had Jane before.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
I think someone's actually said that that you'd get them
out of trouble too, Just so, just so you know,
was that Mackey who would get you into trouble, Holly Fowler,
Holly Ray would get me into trouble.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
That was a quick response.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
Yeah, I just I just past experience, and I feel
like cat Hole would get me out of the trouble.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
She seems very, very, very sensible.

Speaker 4 (24:43):
Yeah, you know, I was just hardly thinking about if
you heard yourself, she'd be able to help you too.
Medical background.

Speaker 2 (24:52):
It's always good having a doctor in your team. What
is your go to post game snack or meal?

Speaker 6 (25:01):
Anything fried and like?

Speaker 5 (25:04):
Yeah, I like fries, a burger, juicy burger, like yeah,
something like hearty like that great burger and fries.

Speaker 1 (25:13):
It's been common too, Yeah, Mickey and a phizzy.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
In a phizzy, I'm a quarter pound of combo with
a fantast really healthy girls, I'm loving it.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
We can wake out. That's what I'm having.

Speaker 2 (25:27):
That's the time to have it, Absolutely, that's the perfect
time to have it. And last, one best piece of
advice you've ever been given?

Speaker 6 (25:39):
Oh, oh my gosh, I don't.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
I don't think I have one best one because every
advice I've gotten in the past has helped me out
of a specific situation. There's not one that's always been
the go to. Soh mickey, if you know, go for it.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
I just think about this, mine's probably hard work isn't
always to be enough.

Speaker 4 (26:02):
Oh that's quite philosophical.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Too often we get told hard work will get us there,
but it's not always true, unfortunately. I think to you,
coming obviously off a couple of pretty tough injuries as well,
you realize as well, you can train as hard as.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
You can and then just happens, right, Sometimes unfortunately it
just does.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
I think I'm gonna go similar to my keys. But
and it's not advice that I've been given, but what
I've learned.

Speaker 6 (26:29):
As well is.

Speaker 5 (26:33):
You got to work hard to make things happen, but
then if it doesn't happen, it wasn't meant to be.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
So that's a nicer way to put it.

Speaker 2 (26:44):
I like that sort of a roundabout hard work beats
talent when talent doesn't work hard.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
Oh, now you're throwing you goodness, we're having a quote.

Speaker 1 (26:55):
Oh look, we really appreciate your time.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
We've really enjoyed the fact that you were are open
to being on the call together and so really appreciate
that all the best for what we're hoping is an
absolutely phenomenal, face, physical and tight grand Final. We can't
wait to watch all the best. Thanks for joining us,
Thanks ladies, thank.

Speaker 4 (27:16):
You talking all things netball Inside Netball, the Inside Netball Podcast.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
How good are we lucky with nipbullers that they just
kind of you throw them under the bus, say right,
can you check both be on screen at the same
time and they come away and have a great chat.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
But look, I love it.

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Good to hear that the players listened to our or
they must have seen some of our social media and
we help fire up the mystics gen bye, Well you did, Actually.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
That's why we didn't.

Speaker 4 (27:49):
Wow, that's right, but I thought it was interesting too.
A gentle nudge there from Karen Berger just about the
just a general reminder that they, the players, are people,
and I think, you know, we sort of tend to
fire out these opinions all over the place without really
stopping to think that they are people. I don't think
it hurts to be reminded of that every now and then.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
Oh I think we know that people because we've been there.

Speaker 4 (28:14):
No, when I say we, I mean we social media
all that sort of stuff. I mean, I wouldn't take well,
I'd take it all with a grand assault, I.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Say, And I think that's what we're hearing. To a
lesser extent, we'll talk about it. Except from Amilia Ran as well.
You know, she came out and said that, yes, it's
only ten rounds, but there's a lot more that goes
into netball than just turning up for those ten rounds.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
It's a big precess. And so yeah, interesting, what did
you take away from those shows?

Speaker 2 (28:41):
It was interesting hearing Mikhayla talk about, you know, the
best piece of advice and she said that sometimes working
hard is just not enough.

Speaker 1 (28:48):
And I think, you know, you alluded.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
It to it with the amount of injuries and adversity
that she's had to deal with, and she's probably worked
all of a hell of a lot harder than a
lot of other people. And sometimes when you get to
the top, it's just all a little bit of luck
goes a long way. And unfortunately, poor old Mickey's had
a bit of un luck, you know, unlucky circumstances in
her career. But still, if people are listening, what was

(29:13):
my quote I just said before? What is it that
hard work beats talent? When talent doesn't work hard. So
you're going to be more successful if you work harder
than just.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Rely on your old talent.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Let's look at the Grand Final, and I thought it
was a really interesting point.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Think it was Mickey that made it.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
The strength of the bench for both the Tactics and
the Mystics. An I think there was very a wise
call from her because both benches have been very strong.
Who goes into this favorites? Is it the Mistics? I mean,
this has the bestpeech. The Mystics says the best bench,
would you not say than the Tactics. I feel that

(29:52):
the Mystics have used their bench more than the Tactics.
I would feel like, I guess they've played Fiddler a
little bit very the Tactics.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
I think Fiddler's best role is on the bench and
staying there. Oh my god, she is a picture of enthusiasm.

Speaker 3 (30:08):
On the seat of Oh God, shouldn't.

Speaker 4 (30:09):
She was here? She was there, She was sort of
doing some kind of boogie.

Speaker 5 (30:13):
No.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
I love her, But yeah, I think Mystics Mystics go
in his favorites.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
Mystics going his favorites by far.

Speaker 2 (30:20):
I think the key for the Mystics to win is
that they've got Peter. They've got the Peter Wallom connection.
You just cannot break that down. You know, Wallam's averaging
fifteen goals. You look at Bird last week, she was
averaging ten to eleven, and that you just can't break that.
Peter's got something that you can't coach. Now if you
look at the tactics, the tactics can have it. If

(30:42):
TP looks in in that third quarter in that elimination final,
I was watching and I was yelling at the TV
to look into Bird. She was holding beautifully up high.
TP would look in. Holly Mather and Peterson would look
in for one and a half seconds and then they'd
turn back and I'd be like.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Oh my god, give it to Bird. She's on.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
So they could give it more and be better the tactics.
That'll be the key. They've got to bring Bird into
the game earlier, because her confidence grew.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
As that second half went on.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
But that connection wasn't there for sixty minutes, whereas you
know with the mystics, it's there every single time with Peter.
So the key for me is that that connection and
the mid court for the tactics, I just don't know
if they are going to quite be as good as
the mystics.

Speaker 4 (31:25):
Well, what I wonder about is and you alluded to
it earlier a Dean in the game where they played,
you know, round ten, and you know, let's face it,
the tactics were done. But I think it was largely
to do and we spoke about this because they didn't
quite know how to handle Walom. But you know, in
that game the other night, they in the second half

(31:46):
Watson and Berger double team back on Walmsley. That and
I wonder if they will carry that tactic over to
the final because it worked.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
It did, And look, what's awesome is that they've all
got these fabulous shooters that shoot really high percentages, so
there's not going to be a huge amount of rebounds.
I think Caudin talked about the turnovers, not making turnovers,
who's going to be really tidy with the ball, not taking.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
Those fifty to fifty passes.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
But we also know nerves are always a little bit
higher in the final and often there is a few
more turnovers. But four of eight A and Z Grand
finals have been won by the home team, So fifty
to fifty chants.

Speaker 1 (32:25):
But look, it's going to be interesting. I hope it's closed.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
We've looked at the average winning margin in a Grand
Final is nine point one, so historically we've had some
blowouts and historically there's been some close Once last year,
wasn't it just one?

Speaker 1 (32:38):
Just one? So here is hoping it's one again.

Speaker 4 (32:40):
I thought there might have been an even bigger crowd
at Wolfbrook the other night for that elimination final. You know,
when they panned up into the crowd, I thought, oh,
you know.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
It's a big stadium.

Speaker 4 (32:53):
It is a big stadium, I know, but I think
Trusts will be sold is sold out, and you know,
it's so good to see that that because you know
a few years ago it would always sell out for
the Mystics, but you know, it hasn't quite been that buoyant.
But I think that this will be their what third
or fourth sellout game I think, you know, latter stages

(33:16):
of the season, so terrific.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
Yeah, Mystics, if they win, they will be their fourth
title ever. Tactics, it will be their first and we're
including in that way back when when it was back
at the Coca Cola Cup, National Bank Cup days as well,
so it would be huge before the Tactics, Sir Donna
Wilkins first year coaching. You know, fantastic for her that
she's come in and taken this team to the Grand Final.

(33:40):
And I think just sets up perfectly. North versus South
Auckland versus Canterbury. There's always a big grudge match when
it comes to those two provinces. Oh look, it's going
to be awesome. Make sure you tune in. It's on
Sunday afternoon four pm on Sky Sport. It will be live,
it will be exciting, and yes it's Are we going
to make a prediction? I think if I had to,

(34:03):
I'd go Mistics, even though I'd quite like the Tactics
to win because it would be nice for Netble that
a new team, you know, takes takes the Grand Final.

Speaker 1 (34:10):
But I think Mystics will be too strong.

Speaker 4 (34:12):
Yeah I do too, If I'm honest, I just can't see. Well,
I just who know. Look, I have no idea, as
you can see from my predictions all season. At least
I had them in the top three.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
Yeah, yeah, you were winning over any and I about that. Look,
I'm probably my head says mistis. My heart'sys Tactics. You know,
you love an underdog coming away with win Right. A
lot of news this week, A lot of news in
the last couple of days. The first one was the
announcement or the media release from net new Zealan about
the eligibility contentious issue around if you plan sun Corp

(34:48):
or in England or whether whether you're available for the
Silver fans gen. You and I have had a few
debates of this off ear to me, really, I don't
think they told us, and I think we didn't already know,
already know that you could apply for an exemption for
the Silver fans of your playing. We saw that with
Laura Lang, when we saw it with Maria Tutaya.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
It sounds as though they have.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
Tidied up the criteria. I would have loved to have
seen that criteria. They talked about transparency. We haven't seen it.

Speaker 4 (35:18):
Well, not yet. We don't need I mean, I don't
know really what you want it from netballne New zeal
I'm a lawyer.

Speaker 1 (35:23):
I want the detail.

Speaker 4 (35:25):
Well, I'm a journalist and I want the news, yes,
but I just think it could have been done so
much more quickly. You know, why why has it taken
so long to get to this point? But just on
that note, so Grace WICKI we understand is going to
be the test case, the test case, yeah, because well no,

(35:47):
I don't think the test case, but I suppose you
will have to be the test casese when I think
about it. But just on her note, she is in
the what do they call it the elimination final over
in some corb the Swift's got thrashed by the fever
in the main final or what do they call it
major semi final life they get a live Yeah, so

(36:08):
they'll have to play the Vixens this weekend.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Who only had a close one was a thunderbird.

Speaker 4 (36:13):
It's just got past the thunderbird. So you know she's
got a work cut out for it because she got
you know, a couple of contacts, missed a lot of goals,
a lot of goals for Grace, so you know, not
a lot of goals too. But you know, so she
is being tested, which I presume is what she went
over there for.

Speaker 3 (36:33):
So you know, the good.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
Thing is should be back playing for the sal Burns
now with that role. But I'm a bit like you,
a Dane. I thought it was a netborn. New Zealand
are very good at putting out press releases that don't
really say anything. And I think every netballer that I've
spoken to in the last twenty four to forty eight
hours have all said, but what's the criteria? They want more,
they want to know, and I just it's just frustrating
that there's just a real lack of transparency.

Speaker 1 (36:57):
With the Netball New Zealand. You know, like any any marriage.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
And any partnership, in any relationship, it's all a communication.

Speaker 1 (37:05):
And I just feel that they just never quite get
it right.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
It's like, how hard would it have been to go, Okay,
generally it's going to be based on test caps or
you know, blah blah blah. They didn't have to give
us every single one, every single you know, criteria, but
they've just left it so open and you just hope
that the players know because you know they'll be thinking
about their future next year. You know, could they have
maybe told us are they going to allow four players

(37:30):
or five players? There's got to be a cap on
how many they let.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
They can't sleep.

Speaker 4 (37:33):
Because I think that's well, I think that's what they're
trying to stop.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
I mean, they can't have everyone everyone.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
Yeah, I think there's going to be a cat because
there's there's only so many Australian to want.

Speaker 1 (37:47):
Let's be honest, there's.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
Only so many spaces in Australia that are going to
be available.

Speaker 4 (37:53):
Well that's and I was pointing to pointing to the
screen where they are no longer there. But Karen and
I mean, they were both saying, well, Mikayla didn't think
that she would be, you know, a need candidate for
that needed and Karen, you kind of got the impression.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
I'd be like, I'm off, yeah, but.

Speaker 4 (38:13):
You're you don't You're not her and which you know,
she's only she's come all the way from South Africa,
established a life. She might have I don't know her
private circumstances. So that's and that's the thing with women.
You don't know all their other components to what makes
up their life.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
And that's a good segue to Amelia's announcement and Miliani
Canasia she's made herself unavailable for the twenty twenty five
International Netball season and you know, she said, you know,
she's listening to what she needs personally and she needs
to take space to reset her mind, body and spirit.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
She's the mother of two.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
It takes a lot out of you you know, it
is not just ten weeks of netball. It is a
huge you were told, you're literally told everything, when to
eat when we went to play.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
Winter, go to the physio Winter. It is.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
It's mentally draining. Probably not surprised any of us. I
think she's always been in tune with what she needs
Amelian as a player in her wellbang so I think
good on her. I wonder if it's going to be
pretty tough now once she has a break to come back.

Speaker 1 (39:24):
You know, two kids, she's thirty four.

Speaker 2 (39:27):
My biggest concern is, holy hell, who's going to be
our goal attack for the Silver Ferns. More to the point,
because you know who do you turn to? The goal
attacks have been pretty slim pickings. TP would be one
of the top ones. She's unavailable. You know, was this
the time? Now we heard Noel's speaking on a podcast
this week and she said in twenty twenty five there's

(39:47):
only one world class player, world class player in the
Silver Ferns. She needs seven. I think that's asking a lot.
By twenty twenty seven, we're guessing that was probably Grace.
When she talks about the one is this the chants
to bring through some of those younger goal attacks, so
they are the best in the world. Come twenty twenty seven,
which is the World Cup.

Speaker 4 (40:06):
Well, I've said, I mean I think if you're going
to have a break and you need a break, this
is the year to take it, isn't it. Because there's
there's nothing on Well when I say nothing, you know,
no pinnacle event. But you know, we saw a few
young ones come up, the young mystic shooter when Wallum
went down and injured a Sophia Yeah, and she you know,
I mean, these players are there, and I just wonder

(40:29):
if we need more of an encouragement for them to
get through, although I think we are because there that
was a you know, that was certainly encouraging.

Speaker 1 (40:38):
We've got you look at that player.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
She's not even in the under twenty one squad because
she hasn't made the fitness target targets. So you go, well,
are they even gonna you know, if she's not even
in the under twenty one is that?

Speaker 3 (40:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (40:50):
So would she even would they even look at her?
For silver fans? So you know, who are the other
goal attacks?

Speaker 6 (40:56):
Heaven?

Speaker 2 (40:56):
And I've liked I think she's really had her moments
this season. I just want if internationally she can step up,
that's that's your challenge. Filder Vilie is another one. She's
just comes and goes in that mystic.

Speaker 4 (41:06):
So I remember she was a job. Well she was
picked one yes and went to Britain and you's never
got to know so and you sort of think, well,
let's quite telling.

Speaker 2 (41:15):
Really, I wonder whether they put old magic. I'm having
a mind blank, will we now stack? Yeah, they start
looking and pushing her up because you know athletically she's
to you.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
Yeah, well she's a fan favorite.

Speaker 2 (41:33):
Whether they start looking at her at Golateech, you've got
to start thinking of life after Econacio. Now she's having
a break, who's to say she'll come back. You've got
to start looking at that that Golateech position. Will she
debut back in twenty fourteen.

Speaker 1 (41:45):
That's a long time. That's over ten years and that
sort of indress and when you're done, you're done.

Speaker 2 (41:50):
I remember my last year, I was like, get me out.
I could not do one more training, one more team
cold more like I'm done, Yeah you do. And she
finishes on seventy nine test caps. If she has finished that,
Actually I was the same seventy nine testcaps. There you
go the other piece of news. I'm not sure how
much this will affect netball, but we're going to throw
it out there anyway. Sky Sky has announced that they

(42:13):
have brought three and three. Now. The reason I raise
that is because of the free to air component. Does
that make netball a little bit more appealing to Sky?

Speaker 1 (42:23):
Because we know nebby deal.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
In the same release about the eligibility again, I feel
like they'd already.

Speaker 1 (42:29):
Confirmed this that there is going to be a competition
next year.

Speaker 2 (42:31):
It's going to be ten round, it's going to be
at the same time a year, but they still haven't
said who's paying for it, basically the broadcast deal. You know,
we have heard through the traps that perhaps Sky aren't
as interested as they have been in the past. Does
this make it more appealing knowing they've got that free
to air option, because that's what gets huge viewership numbers,

(42:52):
isn't it. If you can get netball in front of it,
behind out from behind the payball.

Speaker 4 (42:58):
You've still got to make it though, don't You've still
got to produce it hugely expensive. That's the problem.

Speaker 2 (43:03):
Yeah, you know, we've talked about a lot. You know,
when you compare the eras, and I hate going back to,
you know, in our day, but you know, fifteen twenty
years ago, you know people did know the silver fans,
they did watch games. A lot of people now don't
have Sky, they don't they don't watch a lot of
netball if it was on free to air. At least,
you know, it's getting our product out there a bit more.

Speaker 4 (43:23):
But there's so many other sports too. I think that's
the other thing that's changed. Competing, competing for eyeballs. Yeah,
it must be bloody hard, it must.

Speaker 1 (43:31):
Be, and it's been funny.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
And you're right any because you know, even doing this
game on show, so many people like.

Speaker 3 (43:36):
Those That was the era when I watched the netbor.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
And then what did help in the era, let's be honest,
is we were winning and people love watching winning, so
that helps. So who knows, that's another one to watch.
So much news, so many exciting things happening this week.
We cannot wait for that Grand Final. It's hard to
believe it has gone fast. The season has gone fast. Yeah,
given it's yeah, one less round, Well, you're going to

(43:59):
be sipping on cocktails this week. I shall be watching
from Fiji.

Speaker 1 (44:06):
Your side I'm going to be somewhere at Trust Arena. Yes,
so are we?

Speaker 3 (44:09):
There?

Speaker 1 (44:09):
Are we there calling the game?

Speaker 4 (44:10):
Gen Will you have a wine and hand on a
suspector four o'clock but early for me?

Speaker 3 (44:15):
Really four on a Sunday. Surely something fuzzy at that style.

Speaker 4 (44:18):
I have a few people round and we might just
have a bit of a do.

Speaker 1 (44:22):
Excellent, we love a do.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
Hopefully lots of people organizing their Grand Final parties. Well,
thank you for joining us again this week. Remember you
can don't download Insane Netbook on iHeartRadio or wherever you
get your podcasts until next week when we review review
the Grand Final.
