Speaker 1 (00:07):
Now Billy Cunning into Great America. What a weekend coming
up here on the Tri State Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The lowly Chicago Cubs are in town ready to be beaten.
But what they're going to do is rest many of
their good players because they only get ready beginning next week,
play a few games at home, go to the playoffs,
and the Reds are hungry for victory, always hungry for victory. Plus,
october Fest kicks off today. Joining you and on al
(00:29):
is the CEO of october Fest. The head of the
Chamber is Brendan Call, who worked at the elbow of
Charlie Lucan for many years when the two of them
seize power and ruled much like King Kong over the
top of eight to one Plum Street. And first of all, Charlie,
we're going to get the ins and outs of Octoberfest.
But I had a source of mine who sighted you
(00:51):
walking into a city hall this morning, and I understand
that Lucan was also somewhere in the presence. Could it
be a bloodless coup? What about a coup?
Speaker 2 (01:04):
We you know, we just keep our eye on things.
Uh No, I was giving a tour to school kids.
Maybe does that work?
Speaker 1 (01:12):
No, no, No, you were sighting in your old office
kind of measuring the uh the drakes. Is that true?
Speaker 3 (01:21):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I'm over here this week because it's a very important
weekend for us. October pheesid Insinnattie, and we had a
great partnership with the city. They helped make a ton
of things happened. Since I police and since I fire
and all the public safety, since I parks, which is
you know, October Fest. I don't know if you were
there last year. No, it's it's Sawyer Point and Yateman's
(01:42):
Cove and so we are in a Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Park and it is it's magic down there. It's like
it's it's great.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
So, yeah, I was over here at city on Uh.
It's you know, it's still a really important part of
our our community, and so I care a.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Lot about what goes on in that building.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
So there is rumors about a bloodless coup using the
military forces of Richard K. Jones. Is not true, the
whole bloodless goo No, no, no, that's unfortunate. Alright, let's
talk about today at four o'clock. Explain to the American
people what's going on. Who's there, How much is the crowd,
what are the special dishes?
Speaker 3 (02:15):
And so much more, big, big crowd.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
It kicks off today at four o'clock. We'll go this
evening all weekend long. Four o'clock today, it starts eleven
o'clock Tomorrow. Saturday is an all day Saturday morning. There's
the october Fest seven K fourteen K run? Do you
run still? So you can come down and run around
town and then wind up at the Octoberfest footprint and
have beers We've got on. The steinhoisting competition is tomorrow,
(02:42):
where you hold a beer stein up straight ahead for
as long as you possibly can. That's tomorrow at six.
The Wiener Dog races are tomorrow at noon, which is
you know, I can't believe I work for an organization
where I got to get up and talk about Wiener Dog.
But you know, you didn't think that that would be
(03:03):
in the in the on the Bengo card. But I
gotta tell you, it is one of those traditions where
people have so much fun. And if you come down
and watch these dogs race across the park, it's hysterical
and so that's a lot of fun. What else do
we have going on Family Day is on Sunday. There's
a bunch of activities for kids and play around. We
(03:25):
got music all weekend bands, a giant three hundred foot
tenth that holds a thousand people, and we have we
have a stage in the middle, so it's like being
in Germany where you can be all around the music
and people sing and dance, and hopefully we have fireworks
after the Reds win every night, so that'll be cool.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
It's going to be a great weekend. Now.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
I'm told from the inquir that this october Fest is
the third best in the state of Ohio. Can you
explain that to me?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I saw that it was I had to figure out
because it said it came it came from USA today,
and I had to figure out what USA today is?
Speaker 3 (04:07):
What is that? Is that a USA today?
Speaker 1 (04:11):
I don't see it.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
I don't think they do that anymore, do they not?
Speaker 1 (04:14):
To my knowledge? But one are the other two?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
I mean, it looks it looked like speak to me.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
But they they said that there's one in Cleveland that
ranked really high. And I know a lot of people
live in Cleveland, but I know that for that Octoberfest,
which is smaller than ours, you have to pay to
get in, and our Octoberfest, of course, is free and
open to all. Uh you know, we sell beer, we
have music for everybody, and you know, and I think
(04:42):
that was like a reader clickpole. So I don't put
a whole lot of stock into it. And if you
come down this weekend and ask people if they're enjoying themselves,
I have a feeling that it's going to be off
the charge.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
And a key factor is of course the weather. And
right now there may be some rain Sunday evening, it's
looking perfect, and a bunch of Cubs fans or Darres.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Anyway, they'll be down there that you know, the Reds
usually this weekend last the last few years, and I
think next year this weekend too is going to be
Cubs again, which we love because it brings a lot
of people into town and they'll have a good time.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
The weather looks good.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
I get a little, you know, anxious looking at the
weather for about a week before the event, but we're
in it today and this is this is beer drinking weather, right,
I mean it's the park looks gorgeous, it's.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Cool at night. Yeah, there's it's going to be a
great party.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Brendon Cole. Is there a dish or two that segment
Dennison should try. He likes brought worse, he likes weaners,
he likes brats, he likes potato pancakes, he likes sour kraut. Well,
what can the segment who's fishing on and when it
comes to eating, what can he give me the top
one or two dishes?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
I mean, there's this Bessie's Noodles is down there every
year and they do really well.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
That's over by the Cincinnatis statue. That's gonna be cool.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
There's all the standard I mean, you can have a
sausage at almost every single one of the booths. The
cream puffs, I again, i'd it's hard for me to
distinguish which is the best.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
They're all great. Put them all in your face, they're great. Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
And then you know my friends at Tickle Pickle who
are down there every year. They've got some really cool
concoctions as well. Oh and I didn't mention Dick Williams
former who's the CEO of Skyline, right, everybody everybody knows
him and they are debuting Chicken Skyline.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
You know this? Did you read about this.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
High way Head some you did you know I bailed
Dick Williams out of jail?
Speaker 2 (06:44):
No?
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Can I tell you the story?
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Is that true?
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Absolutely, that's absolutely what happened. Well, he was a young man.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Are we still in the air.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yes, I bailed. He was criminally charged that I represented
Dick Wayams, former ran the Reds skyline Chili. Yes.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, he's a great American.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
That's it. So the Red Legs are either clinching or
winning a playoff or World World Series game. In nineteen ninety,
there was a young man who ran onto the field
with somewhat long hair and like jumping around the mound.
I didn't know him at the time. Marty and Joe
negatively comment upon this derelict on the mound. So I
(07:31):
was doing the postgame show at the time. So I
go down the locker room. Before I get there, they
got some young man, long hair and handcuffs and this
cop comes up to me and says, hey, Willie, can
you represent him? And I look at him, I said,
who is he? Well, that's Dick Williams. You know the
Williams family now own Western and Southern with the Barrets.
I'm going really, that's the guy who's jumped around the
(07:52):
mound and they were going to haul him up to
the top of the Hamley County Courthouse has some nasty
jail cells. And so I just happened that day to
be in room ay and I knew the judge, and
I had a cell phone number, so I call the judge.
He said he wasn't too happy about this, Like ten
o'clock at night, and he says, some derelict ran on
(08:15):
the field. I said, that's the guy. He said, no,
lock him up. I said, I wait a minute. He's
he's from a blue blood family. He's got no previous record.
He had maybe a couple one beer too many. So
he gave him an our bond. He signed and got out.
We went three. He went through a diversion program. It
had to be told like the like the Hending kid
that did the backflip and the baseball game last year,
(08:38):
that was Dick Wait, that was Dick Williams.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
He's a great American and he the very same is
leading the world's largest chicken dance on Saturday afternoon with
Red pitcher Brett Suiter from I think Moler High School.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yes, and it is going to be a hoot. And
so you should come down backerme on.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Hopefully you won't do something wrong again to get locked up.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
So always he's been absolutely Listen what's going on at Skyline.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
With the Greater's ice Cream and now chick and Chili.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
I think there we've got great, great food companies in
this town. Skyline's one of them, and they're just doing
They're doing an awesome job. I'm thrilled they're partnering with
us on Octoberfest this year to debut the Chicken Chili,
which I thought was brilliant.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Let me ask you another question more seriously, are you
concerned about public safety? With all the incidents who've had
with shooting and crime and blood running in the streets,
are you concerned?
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Look, we hear you know.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
When you do an event like this, I feel like
you have the public trust. And so we spend no
matter what year, no matter what time of what's going
on this year or any other previous years we've been
doing this forty nine years. We spend a lot of
time working very closely with Cincinnati Police, with all sorts
of other law enforcement agencies from all over to me
make sure that we've got an experience that people have
(10:02):
confidence in and of course you know we'll be will
be vigilant and work very closely. But I know our
team has put together a great plan and I think
everybody should feel like they can come down and have
a wonderful weekend in October fift Do.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
You any questions for me about sports, politics, world capitals,
something that's confused you over the years.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
I mean, I feel like I have one hundred questions
for you. But did you have what soup did you
have for lunch? Chili?
Speaker 1 (10:28):
I had some chili and Skips. I love their beef
chili had that. There's a chance, although it's remote, I
may come down. If I do, I'll give you a call.
I came down for the taste. You may recall I
had Penny and I had Donovan ran into you, and
yeah we did. I'll be down there this weekend. I'm
going to be working.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
I'll be working in the merch booths one night this weekend.
We've got really cool I'm wearing a shirt right now
that says it's it is. We have old posters from
the eighties, and we created a shirt this year that
is modeled after the nineteen eighty five Octoberfest poster. Next
year is the fiftieth anniversary of Octoberfest and the fiftieth
anniversary of Riverfest.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
It's gonna be wild. Well i'll let you know. We'll
see what happens, but keep a low profile and continue
to defend the American way of life. I appreciate you,
Brendan call. Do you really do appreciate me? Do you
really do?
Speaker 2 (11:22):
I do?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
I love these calls. It's a it's been a tradition.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Now.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
I think i've I think I've been coming on your show.
I started working for Charlie in two thousand and you
must have started calling me right after that, so I
think it's been twenty five years.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
You're not that old. And I used to call Charlie's
kids at home when he and he and marshare out
running around. I'd call the kids get a live update
on the mayor's behavior at home. He held his breast.
Sam would answer the phone. I think I've heard those
stories from my friend Sam Lucan.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Well night.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Next time you see Dick Williams, ask him about his arrest.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Have you told that story before? Is this going to
be a thing for him?
Speaker 1 (12:01):
I don't know if I have or not. I might
I don't think so, but I wanted to keep it quiet.
But it's been now thirty years, so I think it's time.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I I I will. Maybe I'll mention it to him
and see how he feels.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
He owes me one he's doing.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
He do you know what he owes?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
You should come down and I'm sure he will pay
you with some Skyline chicken chili.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
I needed badly. Once again, Brendan call. The rumors of
your re emergency city Hall may be premature. I'll look
forward to the day that you and Luke of Maree
for a thousand years, a thousand years, you'll be in charge.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
That's right, That's right, all right, Brendan.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Thank you very much. And by the way, if you
get arrested, call me. I'll get you out on bond. Brendan,
if you get.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Arrested, I can't wait. I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Thanks, Brendan. I'll see you later later. Well, unbelievable. Halet's
continue with more b line becomes available five one, three, seven, four, nine,
seven thousand and news coming up and further in my
comments plus later on. We've scheduled a representative of an
economic group that says that we need to tax the
(13:08):
rich less because the middle class benefits at your home
of the Reds winning tonight hopefully against Chicago four big
in fact, the seven game homestand this Thursday, Friday, Saturday
and Sunday. This Octoberfest is about twice the size of
the Taste of Cincinnati. And if there's two better in
the state of Ohio, I want to see it. Bill
Cunningham seven hundred Wow.
