Speaker 1 (00:17):
And walk on the box line Matt McCoy along with
our best Buckeye coverage analysts, Jeff Logan and Bill Conley,
as we talk Buckeyes with you.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
We don't have Roy Hall tonight.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
No, usually he's not here un till seven anyway because
high school football coaching. But he's been invited to the
Red Carpet premiere. I actually don't know if it's Red Carpet,
but I'm saying that there's a documentary out about Ohio
State's national championship last year and the faith side of
football that Roy was involved in. It's called Redemption more
Than a Championship, and Roy is going to be I

(00:49):
imagine he's featured in it at some point, but Trevion
Henderson and Meca Buca, g Scott, Tim Tebow actually has
a role in this in this project, So we don't
have Roy tonight, but he promised us a review next
week so and said that might be available on streaming services,
which obviously we'd like to get that information to you
because I know a lot of you would enjoy watching that.

(01:13):
So anyway, Bill and Jeff and I are going to
talk about the Buckeyes till eight o'clock as they get
ready for this game against Illinois. And you know, when
we looked at the schedule before the season started, I
even remember week number one getting a question, you know,
what are the hiccups potentially on the road. We had
this one circled this stretch actually with three out of

(01:34):
four on the road Wisconsin. Is that going to be
a hard game? You know, you never liked going there.
It is going to be in the afternoon three point
thirty next week.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
But Wisconsin's struggling.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
So but Illinois, even though they lost sixty three to
ten to Indiana. Ryan Day's message Jeff Logan this week
to his team and he shared it with the media,
was throw that game out. And the example he used
was last year after a bye week, Ohio State played
at home against Nebraska, and the week before Nebraska had

(02:07):
lost fifty five to ten to Indiana and looked terrible,
and Nebraska took Ohio State to the fourth quarter and
had a chance to win that game. So do you
throw that game out to you buy into the fact
that that Illinois that we saw against Indiana is not
going to show up Saturday.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Well, from Ryan Day's standpoint, you can say anything you want,
But what are the kids gonna believe?

Speaker 4 (02:29):
All right?

Speaker 3 (02:30):
You know, they can't hide the fact that they know
that score, they know what that's all about.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
And when you really look inside.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Illinois, and I was one of those guys that said,
this will be the sternest road game that we have
with the exception of going up to Ann Arbor. At
the end of the game, I felt like this would
be more difficult than going to Washington because you know,
Illinois last year what eleven and two?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Or were they that? I mean, they were very good.
They won their bowl game, y or.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
A big underdog against South Carolina and won that.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
They did a terrific job a year ago.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
And they have the most along with Drew Aller at
Penn State, the most experienced quarterback in the Big Ten.
And I think that's the difference maker, is that you've
got an experienced guy over there, and Matt Patricia will
certainly bring his bag of tricks. But it's a lot
different going up against a true freshman quarterback like they

(03:25):
did at Washington, or a red shirt freshman quarterback versus
a guy that's been in the league for four years.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yea, oh, exactly right.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
And now think about it. I wish they had sixteen
millimeter tape because if I was on the coaching staff
and there's sixteen mili, I would take the Indiana tape
and out hide it somewhere.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
We're having trouble here. You can you boost his mic
in there.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
I don't know what.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
I just think you need it more direct, Bill instead
of sideways.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
We're having we have a we have a mic issue
in here where the mic that Bill usually the Bill.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Bill is picking it up. It fell off when he
was getting ready to go off.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
It's been one of those days.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
And now I can hear that's okay, so that one
had fallen off. But anyway, go ahead, we get him back.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
Anyway, if it's a sixteen millimeter tape, instead of being
on you know, on the computers anymore, I would throw
the tape away so the team couldn't look at the
end of a game. Yeah, can't find it, loss of somewhere.
Yeah that on gas must accidentally threw it out.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Now its streaming services though, that's they can go find
that anywhere.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
They want to.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I know, yes, my point.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
But the thing about this team, this Illinois team is
you know, very good offense, but their defense is not
so good.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
They're struggling.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
They give up a lot of sacks, they give up
a lot of points. We're don only getting a shootout.
And here's the thing about we've been Illinois enough. I
know you use a player Jeff myself as a coach,
that they'll be loud as heck, they'll be just as
all as of Washington people until you get ahead of them.
So it's important we get a good fast start getting
behind and then the crowd will get out of it.

(05:03):
But they're right now, they're on a high.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
For this generation of Illinois fans, you know, and I'm
not talking about the Red Grange fans, all right, this
generation of ILI and I fans, they've been through a
lot of crap, all right. Yes, they have been not
very good. They've been a carousel of coaches that have
been over there. They've improved their facilities under Brett Bilma.

(05:28):
They feel like this is their time and this game
this week is in USC coming there. That was like
a bowl game for them, you know, understand, because that
brand of USC, even though they're not very good, that
USC brand carries a lot of bizazz to it. And
when you beat them at home like they did in

(05:48):
a dramatic fashion. That goes a long way, you know,
into the next week. And this weekend will be the
biggest weekend I believe in Illinois football, the op opportunity.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
For this generation. Yeah, there's not been a bigger game.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
And you can talk about, well they play against Northwestern
for this and maybe Iowa forget it, and don't tell
me about the Illa Buck. That means nothing. That means
absolutely nothing. But you've got Urban Meyer and his circus
are coming. Yeah, and the circus doesn't come to Champagne
or Bana. They do not show up at that place ever.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Get lost.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah, this is big noon, and this is a big
deal and I think for this generation of a LIONI fans,
Matt to your point. Yeah, it's the biggest weekend of
Illinois football in a long long time. Did you see
who they have coming?

Speaker 1 (06:42):
A former player that is I don't know what his
role is going to be this weekend, but maybe he's
going to be on the pregame show.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Juice Williams.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Do you remember Juice Williams two thousand and seven, Ohio
State was number one in the country and probably played
the best game of his career as a quarterback was
merely known as a running quarterback, which he was. But
he like threw four touchdown batses that day and they
upset Ohio State. So so they are pulling out all

(07:11):
the stops, I guess and rightfully. So you got the
defending national champions and the number one team in the
country Bill there.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
You know teams are going to do that.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Ohio State is always an opponent's biggest game of the year,
especially the state of Ohio State football right now.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Oh absolutely, And I think back I was thinking today
that you know, the year we went to national championship
and we beat Miami and won it all.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
We had to go to two overtimes to beat these guys.

Speaker 5 (07:37):
Yeah, they'll play their cleats off, no doubt about it.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
What do you get to think of Brett Belama?

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Because I know I asked that because I actually kind
of know what you think of him, Jeff. He's a
little bit on the obnoxious side, but he does win
in certain situations, Like he was good at Wisconsin, went
to Arkansas and was a total bust. It didn't work.

(08:06):
But he goes to Illinois and they're a bit of
a mess, and to your point about. Last year they
went ten and three, six and three in the conference,
finished in the top fifteen in the country, got into
the top ten this year until that drubbing. But he's
got them in a positive direction. And Ryan da said
he's among the best coaches in the country.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
I would say he's an elite coach. There's no question
about it.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
I think he's good, not great, And I think he's
been at places where he has taken them to the
limit of where you can take their programs. And speaking
specifically with Wisconsin, Wisconsin was never going to win the
national championship.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
It doesn't matter whether new Rockney was up there coaching, all.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Right, They're just not going to have the talent to
be able to win a national championship. But if you
can take Illinois football and get them to the point.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Where they're, you know, ten and three, you know.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Like you mentioned, finish in the top fifteen of the country,
go to a ball game, goetna win, that's a lifetime
contract coach.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:09):
But the word little and Brett Beielema should never.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
Be used as since.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
Now he used to be pretty thin when he was
coaching at Iowa and recruiting South Florida like I was.
Lots of times we would travel together out to Lake Goguchobeat.
All those little schools out there had great players, but
Iowa wasn't going after the necessarily the same guy as
we were. But pretty nice guy and stuff like that
is very apparent from the bust when he went down

(09:35):
south to coach. He has more of a Midwest guy
for sure. But you know what, he's got the most
out of the program right now that anybody has.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Yeah, you know, I'm interested to see what this Ohio
State defense does with the Illinois offense. Illinois can score points,
and you mentioned their quarterback Luke Altmyer. He hasn't thrown
an interception yet this year, even the Indiana game.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
Where they got destroyed.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
If you look at his numbers, he did not play
in the four quarter because the game was over. He
didn't throw it for big yards, but he didn't make
any mistakes. He was like sixteen for twenty two. His
yards were way down, but he wasn't the problem. They
couldn't stop them at all, and they had a couple
of fumbles that they lost. What does Matt Patricia roll

(10:20):
out against this guy? Is he going to have a
big passing game. Is this the team that you know
finally scores some points on the Ohio State defense?

Speaker 2 (10:28):
What do you think though, Well.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
I think, first of all, a very aggressive style against
this team for a couple of reasons.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
We do it well.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
Second of all, they've given up a lot of sacks
they are and they're dead last in the conference in
pass defense, so so our offense has a chance. But
we got to get our offense to the ball. But
I think, you know, roll the bones this week. I
think we can get after him. We can beat their
pass protection, which isn't very good, but we're gonna have

(10:56):
to because this guy's good enough runner. He not an
athletic running quarterback, but he can keep a drive alive
if you give him five or six yards. But you know,
I saw stat we're very good at first down defense
in the conference, and that means you lot second longs
and third and longs for the other team. So we
need to do a lot of that. Keep doing that.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yeah, yeah, he is.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
It's rare je have to see in today's college football
a second year starting quarterback, let alone a third year
starting quarterback. He's a senior be in the system, had
success and I'm sure he's going in there pretty confident,
and for a guy that is thought to have pro potential,
this is a huge game for him personally, no question.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
And you got to wonder about a guy like that,
because nobody stays around for three or four years anymore.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
Is it because he had to? And Drew Aller same way?
Is he at Penn State because he had to? Why
didn't he go to the NFL?

Speaker 3 (11:50):
And if he weren't happy there, why didn't you take
off and go portal, you know, into some program where
you could go excel at a very hi level. So
I think very good, very experienced. This will be the
second year in a row, by the way, that the
ilion I will be hosting the defending national champion. A

(12:11):
year ago they beat they be at Michigan twenty one
to seven when they hosted them at home.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
Now, again that's a different team.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
It's a defending national champions not there in their season,
and they also lost on the road at Oregon last year,
playing the number one team in the country. So this
isn't brand new to Brett Bielimo or the ELI and
I playing against some pretty solid programs, but again it's
it's it's one of those games. From a talent gap standpoint,

(12:39):
Ohio State should be able to dominate.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
All right, go ahead.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
They got a guy named Hank Beaty.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yeah, receiver, really good.

Speaker 5 (12:46):
Receiver and hunt return specialists. He is their top all
purpose player.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
You look at yards per catch, this guy's huge. He's
like eighteen yards to catch, so he's playing catch, opening
up some big.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
You can be part of the show by calling us.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
We're going to start taking calls after the bottom of
the hour, but a lot of you have already and
I mentioned last week, have been getting really good email
interaction thanks to those who sent me emails at Matt
McCoy at iHeartMedia dot com.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
We'll get to some of those.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
You can tweet at me Matt at Matt McCoy Radio.
We continue with bucks Line after this on six to
ten WTVN. Right now, Traffic and Weather together, service of
Day and Night, heating and cooling products and temperature pro Columbus.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Here's Johnny Hill.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
We'll start taking some calls after the bottom of the hour.
Six one four eight two one nine eighty six six
one four two eight ten six one four eight two
one WTVN. I'll be all right or one eight hundred
and six to ten WTVN from Twitter, our friend Barry
who listens every week to everything and thank you very much,
he's out in California. According to the best Buckeye coverage

(13:49):
experts who have been part of the program, has Illinois
ever been an opponent that the Bucks should be exceptionally
cautious about or is ow is you more concerned about
their own team and execute should.

Speaker 4 (14:01):
Love the show?

Speaker 1 (14:02):
I think my opinion listening to Ryan Day this week
and maybe we can get into that a little bit
in the show and his message about, you know, hating
it when he hears people compliment his team because they
have a long way to go. I think, Ohios Rhino
is always more worried about themselves. I think they believe
as long as we do what we do will be fine.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
But I don't know how.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
I'm not saying Bill that they don't scout Illinois and
know what they're doing, but I think they feel like
if we play the way we should play to our
ability will be fine.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (14:38):
I mean it's some of that coach talk obviously, but
right now, the confidence of the football team and the
coaching staff is really high because they've been playing so well,
and that's why you it'll be interesting to see what
happens if we get in a situation where we get
behind by a couple of touchdowns, if that would ever happen.
It could maybe because this quarterback's good good receivers, but

(15:01):
I doubt if it will happen. It seems like, you know,
the coaching staff, they're not leaving many stones unturned as
they prepare for somebody. They seem like they have the
number exactly right. Game plans have been great, execution's been great.
Now they all can't be super every week, but I
think they're smart. Note they can't go to Champagne Illinois
and land Aid.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yeah, think about a team like Penn State a week
ago going out to You know, again, you can't compare
this game to that game because of the opponent, but
you have to know whether or not you have lost
your team by Wednesday or Thursday of that week in preparation.
It's not Saturday morning when you wake up and say,
guys aren't ready to play. And I think Ryan Day

(15:43):
has got a culture built in that it basically says
we don't care who the opponent is. Now that doesn't mean,
they don't prepare right for the opponent, But we don't
care who the opponent is. All we care about is
our own execution. We want to go out and make
sure we do the best job that we can, doing

(16:03):
the things that we need to do to make it happen.
And you know Ryan Day's comments, the most important thing
that he wants to be able to do in a
game like this is obviously start fast, all right. And
starting fast, as far as he's concerned, is a matter
of being clean, being efficient, and finishing.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
Drives all right.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
And so when you get that first drive, whether it's
on offense or defense, they want to know how do
you finish a drive on defense? Three and out? How
do you finish a drive on offense? You put the
ball in the end zone. So that's what they are
concentrating on is to be clean, no penalties, be efficient
in what you do, make sure you make the right

(16:42):
reads and don't make mental mistakes, and finish those drives.
Because the number of drives you get in today's college
football is limited down to six or seven, maybe eight
drives a game unless the other team turns it over
a bunch of times. And the one thing with Illinois.
He saw their stats on on turnovers. They have eight
fumble recoveries. Eight fumble recoveries. Now part of that is

(17:06):
Duke spit the bit four times. Yeah, all right, and
so that's a little misleading in that degree. But this
is a team that will ballhowk and they will go
after the ball. We haven't been a fumbling football team.
But you want to turn the game around on the
road really quick. You fumble that time a couple times
in that first quarter, and now you're in for a problem.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
One thing, you to finish that off as we hit
the brake. But finishing drives, the opening drives the last
two games, they failed on a fourth down inside the
five yard line against Washington and then they you know,
missed a field goal on the opening drive against Minnesota.
I think that's what Ryan Da seen. Let's let's finish
those drives at the start of the game. We are

(17:48):
going to continue the conversations. I mentioned the phone numbers
eight to one, nine, eight eighty six six one four
one WTV had a one eight hundred and six to
ten WTV and back with your calls and more after
this right now, trafficking weather together, service of day and
Night Heating and Cooling Products and Temperature Pro Columbus. Here's
Johnny Hill, Matt McCoy with Bill Conley and Jeff Logan.

(18:09):
It is Bucks Line. We're with you till eight o'clock.
The game is a nooner this week, and that means
we're up early for the best Buckeye coverage pregame show,
so tune us in starting at nine in the morning.
The early kickoff also means we'll have a postgame show
so you can join us after the game as well
as the Buckeyes play the big noon game on the
road against Illinois and yeah, you know, get get to

(18:35):
watch the game and then you're you're good for the
rest of the day, right.

Speaker 5 (18:39):
N guy goes studio, Yeah, and TV I know.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Note that I got on in an email from Jen
I was at the Minnesota game Saturday night, and as
the teams were warming up, they played the end of
the Penn State game on.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
The video board.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
I saw a lot of Buckeye players and coaches stop
and watch the final play. The Black Eyes then went
out and took care of business. Do you think seeing
Penn State get upset help them focus and avoid beating
upset themselves?

Speaker 2 (19:08):
That is from gen or did they just enjoy watching
the game?

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Did enjoy watching like everybody sports fans too, exactly?

Speaker 4 (19:15):
Yeah, And you can't tell them not to do.

Speaker 5 (19:17):
You can watch them on anything anymore, your phone.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
And it was a great shot of Ryan Day standing
in the middle of the field staring oh really, oh
yeah at the scoreboard watching the end of that, I mean,
very much engaged in what was going on.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
So do you think that message was relayed to the
team or did they not have to because they, as
Jen said.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
We're all watching it.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
Well, I just wondered if they got in the locker
room and said, guys, we just watched Penn State lose
to freaking UCLA. Yep, you better bring it tonight.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
Don't you remember in.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
Our pregame show last week, I was telling you that
both coaches were gonna use that game as an emphasis
with their team. So you know, Row the Boat goes
into his locker room and says, look, look what we
can do. They just did it, and Ryan Days over
there going, look what just happened. You better have your
your stuff together today. Yeah, So I think it was.

(20:10):
I think both teams focused on it.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Who would ever think at this point in the season,
there would be so many teams that were preseason top
ten top ten have two losses.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
Yeah, amazing.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
Yeah, Penn State, Clemson and who am I missing? Oh Texas, Texas,
Penn State, Clemson are combined eight and seven amazing and
none of them are ranked in the Ape pole anymore.
And they were one, two four.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
And I think the explanation that I have for that,
and I don't know if it's accurate or not, is
that you can go buy as much talent as you
have money for, but can you mold that group into
a team. Can you make them a cohesive unit that
can go out there and handle adversity and be efficient?
And I think you have to have some continuity in

(20:59):
your pro to make that happen to go that way.
And that's what surprises me, quite frankly about a team
like Penn State, because they had that continuity, they had
the people coming back.

Speaker 1 (21:12):
They did, they all made a point in coming back
and we're going to do this together.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
That's the one that surprises me.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
The others, you know, and you bring a bunch of
strangers in that are coming in for the paycheck, and
when it gets hot in the kitchen, the first one
is looking for the exit.

Speaker 5 (21:29):
Yeah, you're right because of that, I mean it's used
the word whull of go, Jeff, It's exactly right. Culture,
the culture that's been created right here at Ohio State,
even though if you've just came into the program, you're
expected to buy in right now. And that means the
players are the biggest part of that. Coaches only do
so much. Your teammates have got to be the guys

(21:49):
that bring you on board and show you and tell
you what's expected of.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
But Bill, doesn't a lot of that come in the
selection process before they even show up in ther locker room.
You don't go grab the guys that you got to
fix when they get here. No, we don't have time
for They have to have the capacity to be able
to understand your culture and be willing to do that.
Because I'm sure there's some talent out there that Ohio
State probably could go get, but that would be a
team wrecker in certain states.

Speaker 5 (22:15):
In case exactly, I love to tell a story. I
was on recruiting at Fort Lauderdale. I mean a tough
place for recruit you know, recruit coordinator. I have to
sign myself tough places and they gets off a hot
down there in a ware. But anyway, I was down there.

Speaker 4 (22:28):
There's also a lot of golf courses.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
I didn't take my clubs, but I took one for
the team man.

Speaker 5 (22:34):
But Rick Spielman was the player personnel guy for the Dolphins.
Sow didn't buy me over, you know, and showed me
around the facilities there in Miami. And so inside the
war rooms, this great big board had every player in
the NFL. And he's telling story. I had a spot
for one free agent and they needed defensive back. So

(22:56):
he looked the guy who was playing for Seattle and
they do the background checks and didn't come out great. Well,
he the guy comes in for an interview and Rick
stonged to him, say, you've been in trouble with the law.
Oh no, sir, I've never been in trouble with the
law at all. Never ever, no, never. Well, Rick had
a picture I'm getting handcuffed outside the bar. He said

(23:18):
that was the quickest interview ever, had a top ten.

Speaker 4 (23:20):
As the guy was out, here's yeah, you don't need it.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
The other thing I sent out that stat about Texas,
Penn State and Clemson being eight and seven and out
of the polls, and somebody responded to me all with
vastly overhyped and overrated quarterbacks, which you look at it,
and there is some truth to that, And I'm not
saying that arch Manning won't eventually be great. Drew Aller

(23:48):
is what he is, Club Nick at Clemson, but they
are not playing at the level. I think that people
why they got ranked at highest, because these guys are,
you know, top five draft picks. One are playing like
top five draft packs.

Speaker 3 (24:01):
I don't think it's fair to include Manning in that kind,
in that combination, just simply he is there as a
victim of his name.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
Agreed, And I don't and I don't mean to make
it that I'm saying, you're from a media stando.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
It was hyped up.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
There was no way he was ever going to be
able to live up to expectation, and this being his
first year as a starter, he did that that you
can't compare against what those other two quarterbacks Clubnick and
Aler have done. They've had plenty of time to be
able to work out the kinks. Arch Manning may still
be an excellent quarterback, and I think his upside is

(24:35):
really really good, but it just takes time, it.

Speaker 5 (24:38):
Does exactly right. I think he's the guy that he
had his chances to beat yours out down here and
he never did.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
And and Buckeye fans, hear me loud and clear, you
better get down on both knees and pray to whoever
you pray, to a great deal of gratitude that you've
got Julian saying.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
Yes, because this kid is.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
Unbelievable in terms of what he has been able to
accomplish so far. And he will have adversity, some things
will come up, but so far, I don't think anybody
could say that he has not exceeded whatever your expectations.

Speaker 1 (25:14):
Were, checks all the boxes for sure. Let's get Jim
in before the break. Jim, thanks for calling as always,
really appreciated. By the way, thanks for your email this week.
He sent me a note about Imcca and Buka and
JSN having such a huge game against each other and
the social media reaction and stuff to it.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Thanks for calling, Jim. What's up, hey?

Speaker 6 (25:35):
My concerns are really about short yardage offense or our
ineffectiveness to always convert on a third or fourth down
when we need a yard or need a yard and
a half or whatever. It really hasn't cost us a
win yet this year obviously, but I'm afraid somewhere down
the road it could. My thoughts are, we started to

(25:59):
see a quarterback snake and then there was a timeout called,
and it looked like that quarterback snake was going to
be effective. We've seen the two quarterback rotation, you know,
sampled around with that a little bit. But in my opinion,
I think if you're going to do that two quarterback rotation,
you're going to have to have Keenholtz throw out of

(26:19):
a fourth and third or third and short or fourth
and short, so to make him more effective as a runner.
That's just my opinion. But I guess I want to
ask you guys what you thought, what your thoughts are
about our short yardage offense or ineffective that's to convert
on it all the time.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
I'm going to be interested, Jim to see if we
see Lincoln Keyelts in the short yarded situation after that,
riand even mentioned it, Hey, I love him, but you
know that's going to cost us a game. Sometimes you've
got you know, he bounced it and he should have
run it in the a gap and just got the yard.
So I don't know, short yarded situation, short yardge offense, Jeff,

(26:57):
what are you seeing?

Speaker 4 (26:58):
Well?

Speaker 3 (26:59):
Number one, the offensive line I thought has done a
terrific job if you look at our third down conversions,
because I think that's one of the judgment areas that
you look at. We are converting at a very high
rate at fifty four percent. Now we can pick and
choose the particulars where we failed on a fourth and
one here, and we want to be more efficient and

(27:20):
make sure we get those things done. And what I
really liked was that on the one fourth down play
the rollout pass for the touchdown. You've got to be
more creative than just doing the tush push and a
quarterback sneak, and you've got to have some tricks in
the bag that you feel comfortably being able to execute
if you're going to do it at a high degree.

Speaker 4 (27:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (27:40):
Especially let's talk about running the ball in the red zone.
We're eighty eight percent and it was scoring in the
red zone. But in terms of run the football, I
think what we've seen the last few weeks. The best
short yard is running back is Bo Jackson. Because he
has tense lower shoulder, he actually get underneath the pads
of the defense because we had a chance to make

(28:02):
it on a fourth and short and running back that
we had are just didn't have his pads down.

Speaker 4 (28:07):
Yeah. CJ.

Speaker 3 (28:08):
Donaldson has been the go to guy in short yardage
because of his size. Correct, that doesn't help you if
you're running tall, right, all right, And that's what you're
talking about, is lowering those pads. And bo Jackson's not
a small guy by any stretch of the imagination. But
you've got to be a You got to have a
knack for being able to do that.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
As long as Jim asked the question and you guys
are talking about it right now. Got this note from
Brian this week. Thank you Brian for writing love the
Show and love the Freshman running Back. A question for
mister Logan. Mister Logan, mister, as a former running back,
why do you think they use CJ. Donaldson in short
yardage situations? I don't think he gets low enough and

(28:47):
has been stood up a few times. Jackson is smaller
but still runs with power and gave great second effort
at the goal line against Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
Thanks that's from Brian.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
Maybe Brian's getting our paychecks is Yeah, he called you
mister Logan. Yeah, he spot on. I mean, Brian, you
got it, man. He is running tall, and you got
to keep the pads down. You got to run north
and south, pads down, heads up, you know, those are
the things that you got to do. You got to
be able to see what's going on ahead of you,
but you got to keep the pad level low.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
And you know, that's one of the.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
Things that made Pete Johnson so good down in the
short zone or in the end zone. Not just because
he's a big bowling ball kind of guy, but Pete
was able to run at a very low level and
just think of the g forces that he was able
to create by keeping his head up, pad level down,
and you know it just you didn't expose your body

(29:40):
that much for people to be able to hold you back.
And so there's a talent to being able to do that.
And you don't have to be a two hundred and
fifty pounder to be efficient. You just have to do
it the correct way.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
Yeah, Pete's g force is called normally is like let's
have an eruption, let's have an earthquake.

Speaker 4 (29:58):
Good point credit to him.

Speaker 5 (30:01):
In the interview after the game, he said exactly that
he said, I'm my pads are too high. I gotta
get lower.

Speaker 1 (30:07):
And let me say this too, it's yes he failed
in a short yard he has converted on short yarded
situations too. I mean, think of Texas at the goal
line on fourth and goal. Yes he got a good
block by Roberts, but he also ran a guy over
at the goal line. I think of the Ou game
even though he his toenail went out of bounds unfortunately,

(30:28):
but he caught a ball remember that at the two
yard line, ran over two guys and got it. So, yes,
he's been stood up, and in fairness to him, he
has been pretty effective too, So I think that they
balanced both of those things. It'll be interesting to see
though going forward if you do see Bo Jackson in
those short yard situations.

Speaker 5 (30:46):
So it is the most experienced of those.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
For sure, exactly. And I think they.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
Trust they trust him because Billy Allison, like you said,
he's a versatile athlete.

Speaker 2 (30:54):
Yeah, all right, we're gonna come back.

Speaker 1 (30:55):
Take more of your calls and comments after this Bucks
Line continues on.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
The Buckeyes in Illinois start at noon on Saturday and
the game is on Fox. That means our best Buckeye
coverage pregame show will start at nine in the morning.
A quick note here from Jim couldn't agree with you
more about Drew Aller. He is not what many media
talking heads seem to think he is. There's a reason
that Ryan Day, who's known for his evaluation of quarterbacks,

(31:35):
let an Ohio kid go to a rival. Would you
do you think that that was an evaluation that Ryan
Day made.

Speaker 4 (31:42):
That was a correct evaluation.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
That's clearly the case. Whether or not he went to
a rival or not, is the question are they really
a rival? Because Penn State decided we were not a rival,
and when it came time to scheduling rivalry games, wanted
to make.

Speaker 4 (31:58):
Sure you kept them.

Speaker 3 (31:59):
They decided the Ohio State was not an important game
for them to play every year.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
Well, I remember when Urban was here and Larry Johnsonville
came to Ohio State after ad just spending a whole
career at Penn State, and when they played Penn State,
Urban said he had Larry talked to him, and Larry
told them that you guys may not realize because you
got the game against the team up north, but for them,
this is their biggest game of the year, like this

(32:25):
is their rivalry game, which made it all the more
weird that when the protected rivalry stuff came up with
the new Big Ten, that they just dumped them.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
That they I think they're tired to lose it.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
That's because Joe wentn't there anymore.

Speaker 5 (32:39):
This guy says that, you know, we played them as
good chance, we're not going to win.

Speaker 4 (32:43):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
Yeah, So that did they I can't even remember did
they protect anybody. I can't even remember who their protected
rivals are because they didn't Michigan too, They got them
off of the schedule.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
It was either Maryland, Rutgers, Maryland. Yeah, I think it
was Maryland. I think it's Maryland.

Speaker 4 (33:00):
Better chance, Yeah, exactly, good move.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
All right, we got our number two A Bucks line
coming up. More of your calls and comments and again
bills No.

Speaker 4 (33:07):
Nine enemy.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
I'm sure the Illabuck Trophy will come up at some
point in that it may. That's on the way out.
Our number two a Bucks line
