Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hey, everybody, Welcome to the Larger drunk Lider podcast, the
podcast that's all about the kieky things happening in the
world around us and how very excited we are about them.
I'm aerial casting and with me as always, is this
super awesome.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Jonathan Strickland, I'm going beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Just a Tom Sawyer. I what's beut that's not for long?
That's the behind. No, I'm really trying to figure it out.
So behind that, I think it's just like Stue developing.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's it's undeveloped land. That's where they're gonna put one
of the new lands that we're gonna talk about briefly
today because we talk about D twenty three stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Yeah yeah, well, good, good for you. I always wanted
to be on Disney Cast. And if you can get
it into undeveloped that means.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
You're got the Yeah yeah, I will slowly develop as
time goes on into what only John Carpenter can say.
All right, well, we got lots to talk about today.
We're gonna try and blast through as much of it
as we can as quickly as we can, and that
means that we're gonna start as we always do, chatting
(01:19):
about the stuff we have watched since the last time
we recorded.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Which boo boy boo howdy, boo howdie.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Hey, Hey, this might as well be boo howdy. Everyone
we know has already embraced the spirit of Halloween, both
both the spirit and the store.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
I have not, but that's fine. I like living every
day to its fullest.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Also, Ariel hates Halloween. Go ahead, you were going to.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Say, I enjoy giving out full sized candy bars to people.
I enjoy apple orchards and fall festivals and hot apple
cider and hot apple cider donuts and pumpkin spice lattes
and all that basic stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I just I'm just telling the ghosts of Halloween past
president future that they've got a person to visit this year.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
I just don't live for it.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Which makes you makes you different from almost everyone else
we know.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
But I do dress up every Halloween for the two
children who are too young to care that come by
my house for the full sized candy bars we have
and leave with the toy because they're too young for
full sized candy bars. Uh. So I embrace the spirit
just enough.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Well, I don't know why you're going on and on
about Halloween. I just wanted to hear about what you
had seen.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Oh my goodness, okay, boo, howdye?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (02:39):
So many things. I started Picard the final season. It's
the last of the Star Trek stuff. I have to
go through other than lower decks, which I will give
another shot to. Uh. And it's not It's not bad,
but it's not super keeping my attention. So there's that.
(03:00):
I tried an episode of One Piece that also didn't
keep my attention, but it was the first episode. It
was really weird because I was like, I don't feel
like this main actor is quite hitting the right notes.
And I hate to judge that because as an actor,
I also struggle sometimes to connect with my material. It's
you know, the struggle is real, but then there are
(03:22):
moments where he does so it might be a facade.
So I just I have to watch more of One
Piece to find out. But it is. The costuming is
great and the scenery is great. I watched all of
the final season of Umbrella Academy, and because I can
often watch things at face value, I didn't have some
of the same problems that other people had. I won't
(03:45):
discuss it yet. Because Jonathan has finally started that and
I'll let him talk about that, but I watched it.
I'm sad it's over because I enjoy those silly people.
I might have to read the comics now, even though
the comics the show viear from each other greatly. And
then I've watched more Scavenger's Rain, which my remote watch
(04:07):
group has dubbed Miyazaki's Animal Planet or something like that
Miyazaki's Lost because it's really weird and it's very like
scene SETI and yeah, and then Never Stop Blowing Up.
And then lastly Batman, Cape Crusader and Amazon, which is
(04:27):
an extra a noir version of Batman that plays with
the concepts of the different villains that you know and
characters that you know, and I'm quite enjoying it very much.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Cool. Maybe I'll check that out too. It's I'm so
bad at checking all the ancillary you know, series and stuff,
especially the animated ones. I just tend to fall behind
on all that. But that sounds great. You mentioned I
have started watching Umbrella Academy. I'm still just in season one.
(05:01):
I just got started. It's probably gonna take a bit
for it to start to really get its hooks in
me because of course, when you start off in the series,
everybody is kind of at odds with each other, and
so it's hard to kind of get attached because everyone's
(05:22):
kind of talking about what a big jerk everybody else is,
and one character is, without question, a big jerk, a
big illicit substance taking jerk.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Oh I love him. I love that.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Character, but he's starting off. He's just terrible. He's so
selfish and so so like just determined to get his
next fix. That's all he is right now. So I
haven't seen any other side to that character, just like
like he just helps himself to anything that's around him
and is willing to do whatever in order to get
(06:00):
his next fix of drugs. So until there's more to
it than that, I'm not going to connect with it.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
I promise you there is more to it than that.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I'm sure beyond that. I watched Abigail, which you know
came out ages ago, but I watched Abigail. That's the
Ballerina vampire movie, which I said, it's like Megan, but
with vampires.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
It's like Megan meets Ready or not, Megan.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Meets Ready or not. Plus Dracula, it was. It was fine,
it was entertaining. I liked the concept more than I
liked the execution. Uh. It also kind of had a
similar problem to Umbrella Academy. I didn't really like most
of the characters, and you don't get to really know,
(06:45):
like by necessity, you don't get to know them very
much before they start getting picked off. And if I
don't know anything about a character, I'm not gonna feel
horror when that character gets dispatched, right Like. It's a
tricky thing for a lot of horror movies, which reminds me.
(07:05):
I also watched Taro, which had the same problem. I
didn't put it on my list, but yeah, I watched Taro,
which I had jokes should have been called horror Scope.
And then at the end of the movie, in the credits,
I noticed that it was based off a book, and
the book's title is horror Scope. And I'm like, oh,
so it was called horror Scope Once upon a time.
(07:27):
Because it's all, it's more about astrology than it is
tarot cards. Like the tarot cards provide the imagery for
like the incarnation of the spirit that comes after each person,
but beyond that, it's really more about astrological signs and stuff.
I really want to know what our friend of the show,
(07:48):
shay Lee, would say about it, because she's both a
tarot card reader and an astrologer. And I'm wondering if
I'm off base by being irritated by it, or if
it really is as close as the movie suggests. And
I watched Jackpot and that's the movie with Aquafina and
John Cena, with the premise being that in La they
(08:12):
have a lottery. If you win the lottery, you have
to survive till sundown in order to actually be awarded
the money. Otherwise, whoever kills you gets the money. And
they can't use guns. That's really the only rule.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
And I didn't get I wouldn't say I got a
running commentary of the movie as you watched it, but
I did get several comments, and it seems like you
enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
I found it entertaining. I thought that Aquafina and John
Cena gave very entertaining and simoulu they all gave great
performances that were a lot of fun. I felt the
material was okay like it was. It was fine for
an action comedy. It was very cartoony like it it
(08:57):
felt like it was kind of satirizing lots of stuff
that's happening today. It's set in the not too distant future.
But there were as I was telling Becca about last night,
there were like three or four elements to the movie
that just don't make no sense, Like the fact that
(09:18):
the main character doesn't know about the lottery and her
excuse is that she was looking after her mother in Michigan.
But like, this is after the lottery's been in place
for like four or five years, and I'm just like,
I don't know anyone who would be so buried in
taking care of someone and so disconnected that they wouldn't
(09:42):
hear that California has a lottery now where people are
allowed to kill each other.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Look, I don't want to dive into real life sad stuff,
but there are plenty of people who are very disconnected
from reality.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Sure, sure, I just that was just one of many
little things that bugged me. To go into more would
required an entire podcast, and I'm not going to burden
anyone with that. Is it worth watching? I think so.
I think it's entertaining. It's got a fun soundtrack. If
you like the music from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you're
(10:16):
in luck. If you are a big fan of random
eighty songs, you may be lucky again. If you like
the Partridge Family, hey guess what. So yeah, it's very
weird and silly and violent. So there's that.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Okay, I want to go back to Umbrella Academy for
a second. So you said you don't like any of
the characters, yet I was drawn in by the episode
one dance sequence and then also Vanya's violin playing. Those
are both such cool moments, and I was like, yes,
I want to see more of this storytelling. So that's
(10:57):
what grabbed me at first. But which character do you
like or do you dislike the least? Since you don't
like any of the characters.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
I mean, I kind of like Elliott Page's character. I
like Elliott Page's character, who I think eventually becomes Victor. Yes, yeah,
so I like I like Elliott Page's character in the show.
I connect with that character the most so far, which
I think is by design. It feels like that's supposed
(11:25):
to be your anchor character. Some of the others also
feel like the I don't know all their names, so
that's part of the problem. But some of the other characters.
It's it's not that I actively dislike them. I just
haven't found a thing to like about them that much yet.
I I actually like one of the two time traveling hitmen. Yeah,
(11:53):
I like Hazel. I like Hazel a lot. So at first,
when I saw Hazel, I thought it was one of
the guys from Mischief Theater because he's built the same way.
But it's not. But yeah, I like him. But again,
I'm still so early in the series, Like I've only
watched like the first and most of the second. Maybe
(12:15):
I've seen the second episode all the way through now
I don't think I did. I think I got interrupted,
so I've got a long way to go.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah, I like Hazel a lot. And then, of like
the main seven children, I think my first favorite was
actually Luthor, which was many people's least favorite. He's the
guy who started out on the moon, the huge dude,
the huge dude. Yeah, and then a lot of the
ancillary characters are really cool, like the mother figure in
(12:44):
the household and I can't remember the their caretaker's name,
the chimp, the chimp. But yeah, a lot of the
ancillary characters are cool. Okay, I was just curious Yeah,
that sounds fun. I'm gonna give Jackpot a try for sure.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Yeah. I think it's I think it's worth watching. I
don't think it's great, but I think it's good. Same
with Abigail. I don't think it's great. I think it's
pretty good. Like it was. I didn't feel like I
wasted time watching it, and I didn't regret having watched it.
I'm glad I did. I felt like it could have
(13:24):
been better, But who am I to say that? It's
not like I write screenplays, so and who knows, Like,
maybe our listener's out there, maybe it's exactly their jam
and they're gonna vibe with it a billion percent, which
is awesome.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Would Abigail be too scary for me? Uh?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
I didn't think Abigail was scary at all. It is bloody,
but it's not scary. There's some there's some like gross
like flesh tearing type stuff going on, like, but I
didn't think it was scary, just kind of gross, gotcha?
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Gotcha? Well, that one will probably be put on the
back burner for me. So that is all for what
we have watched the last two weeks, since we weren't
here last week.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Yeah, yeah, let's do some thirty seconds or less.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
All right, this first story, I was like, this will
be easy and quick to talk about, but it's so
in depth you guys are just gonna really have to
check out though the link. But I will start. So,
if you're a fan of gravity Falls and have i'n't
been following all of the fun drama that's been happening, well,
there's been a lot of it. There's been a fake
(14:43):
Twitter account built for it for the Oregon Parks Department.
There's been a website built for it. This is not
a website, dot com and a whole bunch of like
really random stuff that is like pointing towards mysteries. And
we don't know whether that's going to be the end
result is going to be like a new Gravity Falls show,
or if it's just promoting Alex Hirsch's book, The Book
(15:05):
of Bill, which is going to be an adult gravity
Falls book. But it's a lot of fun. It's very
much like how when people were first looking at all
the stuff coming out for Lost. We're trying to solve
a bunch of mysteries. It's all over the internet. If
you're a fan, and even celebrities like Charlie Day and
weird Al Yankovic have gotten involved. It's ridiculous cool.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Well, it's not a crossover between DC and Marvel, but
Deadpole and Wolverine have defeated the Joker at the box office.
That is, dead Pole and Wolverine recently topped a billion
dollars at the box office and then shortly afterward became
the top grossing R rated movie of all time. Of course,
Jokers sequel is coming up soon, so perhaps the clown
(15:50):
Prince of Crime will have his revenge, the biggest revenge
of all. I bet we're going to be getting a
lot more R rated superhero movies.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Well, we know we are. I hope Joker doesn't beat
out Okay, uh next uh we're getting a or. There
is a creature from the Black Lagoon movie being developed
by James Wan for Universal. And I'm a little sad
because most of James Wand's the body of work I
(16:21):
cannot watch. While he made Aquaman and Moral Kombat, he
also has done all of the Saw movies and the
Conjuring and all of that stuff, and I cannot watch
the Saw movies. And they're saying that this new version,
this modernized version, of the Creature from the Black Black
Lagoon is going to be super scory, scary, super scory.
(16:43):
I hope it has a good score and then also
have like a lot of like Gore in it. So sadly,
probably not for me. It's my it's my favorite monsters.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
I think the score is just gonna be like sounds
of like bloop.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Blue visceral Horror Horse is probably gonna be flesh staring.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Yeah, back to Abigail, all right, as we watch the
Spirit of Halloween takeover empty businesses like some sort of virus.
We're also looking forward to a couple of video games
based off the film franchise Halloween. One of those will
be built in the Unreal Engine five game engine, and
even better will be created with the guidance of John
Carpenter himself. We don't have many details other than you'll
(17:26):
be able to play as quote unquote classic characters. I
can't wait to hear that iconic theme song blast out
of my game Boy?
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Do you have a game Boy?
Speaker 2 (17:36):
I do, but I don't think this is coming to
game Boy?
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Gotcha? So In twenty twenty, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy,
the father and son duo from Shits Creek one an
Emmy Award. One Emmy Awards was the first Father Sun
duo to do so well. Now they're back to host
the Sandy six Emmy Awards on ABC September fifteenth. I
think this is kind of cool. Well, I love family
(18:01):
dynamic in hosting things, especially when you've got like a
very comfortable tongue in cheek sort of relationship. Similarly, Rob
Low and his son did a Hot Ones challenge and
it's just delightful. So while I don't usually watch the Emmys,
I'm definitely gonna be looking for clips of them hosting.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Paramount Global is shutting down Paramount Television Studios today. Many
folks will be laid off as a result, but the
projects developed under the studio are migrating to CBS Studios,
and that includes Reacher, which is on Amazon Prime and
Time Bandits, which is on Apple TV Plus. This is
all following Paramount's announcement that it will merge with relative
(18:42):
media newcomer sky Dance. According to a memo, the decision
to shut down wasn't a reflection on performance, So I
bet that's comforting for all the people who lost their jobs.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
I have so many feelings about that. Okay, Squid Game
two is on its way. We talked about that recently.
Will they've released a teeny tiny trailer about it doesn't
really show anything other than the fact that Lee Jung
j will be back, and yeah, that's that's all I
gotta say about that, which makes up for some of
(19:16):
the others going a little bit slow. But I know
that if Jonathan puts music behind these guys sometime, So
now we're kind whoo Okay.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
The Masters of the Universe live action film has its
Tea Love, the captain of Attorneya's Royal Guard, and it's
Camilla Mendez. She was in Riverdale as Veronica, so I imagine
she could offer a masterclass in the Smolder, but I've
never seen Riverdale, so this is just me guessing. She'll
be joining Nicholas Galatzini, whose name I am totally sure
(19:45):
I'd butchered. He's playing he Man. He was previously in
The Idea of You as well as Red White and
Royal Blue. And this just feels like word salad to
me at this point. It really does.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
It sounds like word salad too, you know, delivered it well,
but it's yeah, so that's our thirty seconds or less.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Whoo. Yeah, we blasted through it as fast as we could,
and now we can talk about news. First up, we
have something that I don't think surprised either of us,
but I mean it's never fun to talk about. But yeah,
we had a movie debut and then spectacularly get blasted
(20:27):
by negative reviews and hot takes on YouTube. And that,
of course, is the film adaptation of boiler Lands. It
was directed primarily by Eli Roth, but he famously moved
on to work on Thanksgiving while another director came in
(20:49):
to do reshoots. So everything I've heard about this just
sounds like it's kind of dull and lifeless. Like it's
it's not that people are doing a terrible job, it's
that the job they're doing isn't good to start with.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Yeah, I it is interesting because the Rotten Tomato score
went up from three percent to ten percent, and the
IMDb score went down from like six percent to like,
from like a six to like a four point three. Yeah,
and most people are saying it's a horrible video game movie,
blah blah blah. I've seen some like mid reviews of it, though,
(21:28):
like some people who are like the scenery is great,
The actions a lot of fun. Some of the characters
really get into it, though they don't get enough screen
time because there's just too much going on. That seems
to be the general consensus.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Yeah, I was feeling a little uneasy about this movie
the closer it was getting to actually coming out, Like
this was a movie that was in not development hell,
but it was kind of in a limbo for a while.
And you know, I think they shot this back in
like twenty twenty one, so it's been in the can
(22:05):
for a few years now, and that's not typically a
really good sign to wait that long, although you know,
you could argue that some of that was just to
make sure that people would be going to the movies again,
because that's been an on again, off again thing. Yeah,
I don't think we're going to be getting a sequel
(22:25):
to this one, Sadly.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
No principal photography began in twenty twenty one, so and
then reshoots in twenty twenty three, Like some of that
might have been pandemic related to though.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
It's Yeah, I'm guessing that this was just one of
those things that never quite clicked. Like everything I've seen
seems to suggest that they understood the esthetics of the games,
but not the tone of the games, which is kind
of weird because Borderlands is not subtle.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
This might be similar to like the Dark Tower movie,
where if you if you're a fan of the property,
it's absolutely horrendous, and if you're not a fan of
the property, then it's yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
I think that might be the case. Well, I know
that some people had the reaction to this year's D
twenty three conference, which is where Disney holds a big
event invites a bunch of fans to by invite. I mean,
people pay tickets to go to this thing, but you
get to go and see Disney do a weekend long
(23:35):
pr extravaganza. There's usually some fun panels and stuff where
they're talking about like the history of characters and animation
and the company and all that kind of stuff, But
the main attraction, arguably would be the series of panels
they do where they announce upcoming projects, and that includes film, television,
theme parks, cruise line, all that kind of stuff. So
(24:00):
what did you think, Eh, so you were one of
the ass Wow? I actually, well, first of all, please
go into more detail, because I did not. I was
not I was about the film and TV projects.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Yeah, so I the film and TV TV projects. It's
a whole lot of sequels offline. We talked about this
a little bit. There are some new things that we're
gonna talk about that are coming out. But some of
the new things that are coming out we've already seen
trailers for, and some of them we have it and
they look cute, but they're nothing like mind blowing. But
(24:40):
most of the stuff is like a sequel, h spin off,
and I'm.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
Like, yeah, like like Toy Story five five five, Oh.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Gosh, Tron three like and I like Tron. The second
one was not as great as if We're but it's fine.
I don't think it needs a third. I don't think
there's enough story there for a third. But I mean,
if it gets surprised.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Me, if it gets Daft Punk back together, I'm all four.
But I three.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
I think nine Inch Nails is doing the soundtrack, so
not not Daft Punk. And then they talked about like
park stuff, right. I did like the clips I saw
of like the musical numbers, like they brought in the
cast from the Hercules musical that's over in Europe right now,
(25:35):
and that was fun because I've been interested in that,
and some of like the Deadpool stuff that they've done
and some of the cosplay stuff. But like the parks,
some of it's cool, like they're making a villain Land,
but I'd hardly go to the Magic Kingdom ever, and
it saves me money, so I wish i'd put it
(25:56):
onto like Hollywood Studios, which is more suited for scary stuff.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
No, you're wrong.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
You're so wrong, And like they're putting a Monster's Ink
Land in Hollywood Steers and I do like Monsters, inc.
But I don't. I don't know the other stuff. It
just doesn't super excite me. You know, They're they're putting
it in Indiana, Jones Land and in Conto Land, and
that could be fun, but I don't know enough about it. Uh,
(26:23):
there's a new Avatar ride that is in not going
to be in Florida. There's some Avengers campus stuff that's
not going to be in Florida unless Universal comes up
there Marble Rights, which isn't going to happen, so I
mean it could be cool. I think I will be
more excited about the park stuff as I see like
more run throughs or or behind the scenes of it
(26:47):
and more details about it, but I don't go to
the park that often anymore. I enjoy it, but I
don't go that often, so it can be exciting, but
if I don't get to see it, then it's what.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Yeah, I do go to the parks at least once
a year. Typically, I am more excited. Like the villains
Land thing, I'm very excited for. I've always loved whenever
Disney puts its villains out in the parks because the
cast members get to be a little more playful, I
(27:18):
think than a lot of the other cast are, and
that's just fun for me. Plus, I think the opportunities
for stuff like Halloween and everything are incredible when you
have villains as part of your parks makeup. Like the
idea of the Villains spelling out a villains Land and
taking over the park for a Halloween event, like, I
(27:40):
think that would be incredible. I'm excited. Fors No, it
doesn't belong in Hollywood studios like Hollywood Studios, isn't home
to the tried and true Disney films, like the the
mainline Disney stuff. It's Pixar and Muppet since Star Wars,
(28:01):
and so yeah, it's I don't think it would fit there.
I'm all for it being an expansion to Magic Kingdom.
I am sad that we're going to lose at least
part of, if not all, of the Rivers of America
and Mark Twain Island Tom Sawyer Island that is that's
(28:23):
gonna end up being changed and converted for the new
Cars Land area. I'm also meant about about that one too.
Like to me, Cars would fit better in Hollywood Studios
because that's where all the other Pixar stuff is, with
the exception of the One Toy Story Ride, which is
in Tomorrowland. But I like, I love the idea of
(28:46):
seeing the Encanto stuff. I actually would prefer an Indiana
Jones right to the Dinosaur Ride. I've ridden the Indiana
Jones right in Disneyland, and I much prefer that to Dinosaur.
That being said, it is surprising that they're still trying
to make Deanna Jones a relevant property because I don't
think the last two movies did in much favor.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
But no, but maybe maybe Classics will will last.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Yeah. But yeah, I the park stuff I'm excited about
more than the films and TV Like, I'm still curious
about Agatha all along because I loved WandaVision so much.
I just don't know that there's gonna be enough there
to make me want to tune into every episode. I
love Catherine Han so much, but I don't know. I
(29:33):
just I just haven't gotten a vibe yet.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Yeah. Well, we can talk about vibe a little bit
more in the trailer, because when we talk about the trailer,
because I I got a vibe, but it's not the
one I was expecting. I'm okay. I might be excited
about the villain Land if they bring back back the
Extra Terrorrestrial alien Encounter.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Oh that was terrible.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
It was so much fun. I loved it.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Oh good, I love well, you know what, you're allowed
to love the things you love. Obviously, I was just
I never felt like that was a good fit for
Magic Kingdom, Like you have all these things designed to
delight people, and then here's the experience that makes kids
poop their pants and some adults.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Too in the villain Land.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Yeah, but also kids love villains too. I know because
I've played a villain and I could not shake kids
every day.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
But so here's the thing, though, if they will having
a villain Land stop Disney from trying to make all
of their villains sympathetic. I don't think so, because I
don't like when they try to make all of their villains.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
I think that's just going to be a thing, because, like,
here's the reason why Disney makes villains sympathetic. It's because
it gives them the chance to make another movie from
the villain's perspective and tap into the ip that everyone's
already familiar with, and that is far more COmON than
trying to make something brand new and potentially have it
go nowhere strange world.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
That that was their fault for not marketing.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
I agree. I agree one that it was a marketing
failure and that it probably would have done much better
had there been any marketing put behind that movie at all.
But to the executives, they're often thinking, oh, we tried
something new and people didn't want it, so let's make
Frozen three and four, which they are doing.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Okay, there was one cool thing about Frozen. At d
twenty three, we got to see the inner workings of
the reindeer, oh sven Sven, which was cool.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
So let's talk a little bit about some of the trailers,
because not all of them, not all the footage that
was shown off at D twenty three has appeared as
its own trailer. You can find people's like people shot
the entirety of the D twenty three announcements, and if
you're willing to sit down for like two and a
half hours, you too can watch it from the view
(32:09):
of a cell phone camera.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
But yeah, stuff like Daredevil and Thunderbolts are have leaked footage.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Yeah, but will Well, we're just going to talk about
the ones that have the actual teasers or trailers released.
And first up is the snow White quote unquote live
action teaser.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
Hmmmm. My biggest problem with this is that they made
all of the dwarfs CGI why and all of the animals, Like,
I get that you do that so that you aren't
creating any animal cruelty issues, and I agree with that,
but if everything else is CGI other than the Princess
and the Evil Queen, what is even the point?
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Agreed? But that's how I felt about the Lion King too, right, Ah,
me too, because because like they would, everyone was calling
it live action. I'm like, this isn't live action. It
might be shot against a real background in some cases,
but this is all CG. This is still animation. It's
just cgi it's not hand drawn or animation that's done
(33:12):
in a cartoony style. But still and say there was
snow White. Yeah, I uh, well, snow White has never
been very high in my estimation of Disney films anyway.
I don't have a particular attachment to it.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
They I mean, we've talked about it a whole bunch
on business on the brink, a whole bunch.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Well, yeah, because it could have bankrupted the company.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
Yeah, and then we've talked about the technology behind it. Like,
it's not been my favorite one because they kind of
exploited some of their actresses from it. And then two,
you know, Disney changes every story it tells, and in
this case, they just took out everything that was cool
about snow White, all of her cleverness right, and all
of her her foiling the evil queen multiple times. If
(34:03):
I'm I don't think that happened. Maybe it did, No,
I mean, like.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
It was essentially the only bit was where she got
the apple. I don't think they had the earlier attempt
where the Queen tries to trick snow White and snow
White seas through it but with the comb and.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
The laces and stuff. Yeah. So Yeah. Yeah, I'm not
excited about this one.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Me neither. That's not to say that the actress playing
snow White is doing a bad job. I don't think
that's true. As for Galgadot, I mean, I'm sure she
does the best as what she can, but you know,
I don't have a burning desire to see this one.
Next up, we have the trailer or a teaser for
Star Wars Skeleton Crew, and I think you pretty much
(34:50):
nailed it when you gave me your kind of elevator
pitch description of this series.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Yeah, it's Star Wars meets Goonies. It starts like it
starts off in suburbia, and you have to look closely
to realize that it's not like modern idyllic suburbia.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
Right right, Yeah, it looks like it looks like it's
Stranger Things, because it doesn't just look like suburbia. It
looks to be like nineteen eighties era depictions of suburbs, like,
you know, not entirely, but close enough where I'm like, oh, yeah,
this feels like it's another nostalgia grab.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
Yeah. Yeah, But then there are aliens in Star Wars stuff,
and it's these kids go on an adventure and leave
their suburbia into the wilder depths of Star Wars like
it feels very It feels very built for kids and
young adults, and that is totally fine. I don't know
(35:49):
if he grabs me of like, I definitely have to
see this one.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
I don't have.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Quite enough of a hook in it. But that's also
because I'm not that demographic anymore. But I you really
like the fact that they are exploring some new stuff
within the Star Wars universe. Shab like that too.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
It doesn't feel very Star wars Ish to me, like
it looks too too pretty and too clean and everything
for it to Star Wars always felt like it was
such a lived in universe. But that's fine, you know,
it doesn't have to cater to my particular perspective on
(36:31):
Star Wars. It is funny because it does seem to
fall into that category of movies where group of kids
encounter grouchy older person and then ultimately they all work together,
except in this one, the grouchy older person also happens
to be a Jedi.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Yeah. I wonder if Jude Law, who plays the grouchy
old Jedi, wore the same perfume that he made for
Firebrand for the kids on the show. I hope not.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Oh, I had totally forgotten about that. Now now you're
sparking a memory.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
It's okay.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
At least it's it's at least it's not as old
factory memory.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
It's not. I didn't. I never got a snort of that,
but it was rather unpleasant as I recall.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
Yeah, yeah, but you know what, I will keep an
open mind because I feel like this first teaser trailer
doesn't really show much of the plot.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Yeah. I it may turn out that it's one of
those movies where it's kind of like, oh, yeah, if
I were a kid today, I would eat this up.
And maybe maybe it's not really my thing today. And
that's fine too. Next up, we got a bit of
a longer trailer for Mowana too, where it's Moana also
(37:49):
and she is trying to find all the other island
peoples who have been sailing the ocean.
Speaker 1 (37:56):
All the other multiverse Malana.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Yes, it's a multiverse. It's actually an MCU movie. They
didn't tell you that. But Doctor Strange, No, no, none
of that's true.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
So Mali is Doctor Strange's friend.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
There Oh Wong it's the version of Wong in this universe.
It it looks good like, I mean, the animation looks
good like. We don't know enough of the story apart
from the fact that Malwana's a wayfinder and she's kind
of doing her job, and that there's a there's a
(38:33):
barrier in the way of all the people's excuse me,
of all the people's reuniting, and we don't fully understand
the nature of that barrier yet. I'm sure this will
be fine.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
Yeah, it looks it looks good enough. It looks like
the story is different enough from the first one and
interesting enough to merit it being made. Do I have
a great desire to go see it now? But maybe
more of a desigreier than a lot of the other
things that they talked about.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Yeah, I mean, I really liked the first Molana a lot.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
And so is that just because Jamaine Clement was in it?
Speaker 2 (39:09):
Not just because, But I will say that his performances
as Tomatoa was definitely one of the highlights of that
movie for me. But Lin Manuel Miranda's music was great.
I love the animation. I loved exploring this kind of
mythology and those stories. It really I got emotional watching Moana.
(39:29):
I did not get emotional watching Mowana to trailer, but
it's just a trailer, so who knows.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Yeah yeah, I also did not get emotional watching the
Mufasa second trailer.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
I got a little emotional, but none of them were
good ones.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
Oh yeah, I So in this trailer they show that
Mufasa was adopted, which does explain why Scar would be
extra angry when Mufasa becomes king, and he doesn't but
it all. He also puts a lot of really bad
implications on Mufasa as to why he is insisting that
(40:05):
his son become this nobility royalty over all of the
Savannah because he's not actually royal. And like, I get
that when you're adopted into a family, you are family, right,
it doesn't matter where your blood comes from. So I've
got very mixed feelings on that, but I think it's
also unnecessary.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
It also seems to be doing the thing you said
you don't like, which is it's making the villain sympathetic,
and that it's really like Scar is coming across as
very much the wrong to party, at least in the
trailer where like Scar seems to genuinely have affection for
(40:47):
his brother, and yeah, I don't considering that Scar kills
spoiler alert Mufasa in liking what you just skip over
that part. Oh, you just have them scan through it
real quick.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
I don't know what you're talking about. I watched Lion
King in the theater and I don't remember that.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
I don't understand why Simba's so sad all of a sudden. Yeah,
I didn't like this trailer. I'll just yeah, I just
planed out did not like it, like I have noice.
First of all, I don't like the CGI of Lion
King in the first place. I have never watched the
CGI went all the way through because I found it
(41:27):
so off putting. I love the original animated version, and
if they had made an animated prequel, Maybee, I would
be more interested. But that's a hard thing to say.
I know lin Manuel Miranda did the music for this
one too, which is intriguing, but it might be one
of those things where I'll only listen to the soundtrack
(41:48):
and never bother seeing the movie.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
I don't know if they made a Lion King prequel,
but they sure made a lot of sequels off of
the original. Card toon.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Yeah, Lion King one and a half, and yeah, I watching.
They're great, actually really entertaining. They're not as good as
the original movie, but they are fun.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
I thought that I would like this trailer at one
moment because we see a herd of very pale lions,
and I'm like, are they doing a nod to the
Simba movie that people say Disney ripped off to make
the lion case?
Speaker 2 (42:17):
Right?
Speaker 1 (42:18):
But I don't think they are. I will say, like,
if they had made, I think it's a matter of
realizing realism, because while animals do a mote not near
to the extent that cartoons do, right. Yeah, But like,
and I know this has gotten mixed reviews. We got
a brief like look at CGI Stitch and I had
a lot easier time with that because it didn't have
(42:39):
to match anything but a cartoon. It didn't have to
look like a real existing animal, right right.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
It's not like Stitch is, you know, actually an Ardvark,
and they just had to, you know, make it conformed
to an actual ardvarks anatomy. Stitch is an alien and
therefore thing expression that you will not find on terrestrial animals.
That's fair game. So yeah, I agree, it did not
suffer from that same issue. Yeah, there's a lot of
(43:10):
challenges between making characters who are non human and can
emote and yet not falling into Uncanny Valley issues. Yeah. Yeah.
Next up, we've got the thing that we promised earlier.
We've got our reaction to the Agatha All Along trailer,
which largely has the sound of the various witches singing
(43:34):
a song about the road. There's a lot of road
imagery and symbolism in this trailer. What's at the end
of that road? I don't know. I couldn't figure that
out from this trailer, but apparently it's really important, to
the point where there's actually like Wizard of Oz references
(43:54):
in the trailer.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
Yeah, I know our audience loves one I type. You
know what, what's going to be at the end of
the road is going to be a dotty spinoff.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
Yeah, I'm all for it.
Speaker 1 (44:10):
Yeah, I I don't mind that this is going to
be darker, but it definitely doesn't feel like the thing
I loved about Agatha in Wanda Vision. She just had
this great, amazing, fun personality, and I understand that this
story behind it is why. You know, it shows that
(44:32):
it was a coping mechanism basically, and you know that
maybe she's the wronged party, but it just it doesn't
have the vibe that Agatha had in Wanda Vision, and
I think it's that vibe that really made people want
to have a sequel about her.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
There were a couple of moments, but they were scattered
in that trailer, right like, and one of those moments
wasn't even with Agatha. Is with Aubrey Plaza's care like
au replause. I kind of had that like, oh, the
bodies are really stacking up, and I was like, oh,
I could totally have heard Agatha saying a similar thing
in season one of WandaVision, and Agatha at the end
(45:14):
is like last one in is a good person like
that kind of thing. I'm like, Okay, Yeah, these are
those little kind of sly ry deliveries that made people
want a series about Agatha, and maybe that is more
consistent throughout the show, but the trailer doesn't really showcase that.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
Yeah, yeah, so I'm not. I mean, I was never
that excited about an Agatha All Along spin off.
Speaker 2 (45:46):
I'll still try and watch this one because I loved
WandaVision so much. It's still my favorite of all the
Disney plus MCU series with the possible exception of what If.
What If is pretty good too, But that's like a
bunch of one offs, right, Like it's not a series
(46:06):
the same way, But I'll probably check it out. But yeah,
it wasn't. It didn't blow me away. Nothing, Nothing that
I saw this year blew me away.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
Yeah. Same. I will probably watch it because I'm an
MCU completionist, and maybe I'll enjoy it. It does have
a flip and amazing.
Speaker 2 (46:25):
Cast, so it does pel of hones in that it's
it's gonna be amazing, uh, in the sense of like
like you know, those actors are not gonna leave anything
on the table. They're gonna they're gonna chew the scenery.
They're gonna have a fun time with the material. Just
the question is how good will the material be.
Speaker 1 (46:44):
Yeah, we did get a trailer for at least one
new property, which is Win or Lose.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Yeah, this looks This looks cute.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
Yeah, it's about like a softball team. It's a it's
a a CGI animated thing.
Speaker 2 (46:57):
Yeah, it was it Will Forte who plays the coach.
Was that the name? Now naral All it's going to
be type again again because I asked a question that
she doesn't know the answer to. And I did watch
this trailer, but I didn't watch it immediately before we recorded,
so it's not as fresh in my mind. But I
did think that the trailer was cute, and Ariel and
I both agreed that there appears to be some sort
(47:20):
of supernatural or super powered thing going on, but it's
not at all really addressed in the trailer, so we
have no idea.
Speaker 1 (47:28):
Yeah, yeah, Will Forte is the coach. Okay, yeah, it
looks cute. It's an animated thing. I don't know that
I'm like chomping it the bit to see it, but
it definitely looks cute. I've liked all of their other
I like all the other stuff that Disease come out
with recently that has a little bit more of that
family feel, like Turning Red and in Conto and stuff
like that.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
So inside Out.
Speaker 1 (47:49):
I didn't watch the second one, but I did like
the first one.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
I've only seen the first one. I haven't seen the
second one either. Yeah, Pixar typically is pretty good at
creating fun and funny characters, so with like a whole
softball team, there's obviously a lot of opportunity to make
a lot of funny characters, and for that reason, this
is one where like it'll probably be like Turning Red
(48:14):
for me. Turning Red was a movie where I didn't
have any real Turning Red wasn't Pixar, but I didn't
have any real expectations going into Turning Red, and then
I went and saw it and was absolutely delighted, And
so I'm trying to keep that kind of mindset for this. Yeah. Same.
Speaker 1 (48:34):
Oh. We did also hear that they're making a new
Freaky Friday, which I feel like freak Here Friday, which
just happens every so often. You either get a new
Parent Shop or a new Freaky Friday.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
Yeah, I and this one's gonna have Lindsay Loewen and
Jimmie Lee Curtis back. It was so funny because when
I was telling Becca about the announcements, I kept that
one last I'm like, oh, and then they're making freak
Here Friday, and Beca looked at me, like, you're lying.
I looked at her and I said, google it. I'm like,
(49:04):
I am not, Like I know. It sounds like a lie,
because who the heck was asking for a sequel to
Freaky Friday, and uh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (49:13):
It's gonna have Manny Jacinto in it, and uh that's great.
He's he he's from a good place, the good placed place.
Speaker 2 (49:20):
I think it needs to have Vince Vaughn in it
as the killer from from that other from Freaky that
other movie, the horror one. Okay, okay, and and throw
that into the mix, and that'd be a real good time.
Speaker 1 (49:34):
Why not. So now we're gonna go from the Happy
World of Disney, which you know, it didn't blow us away,
but at least it didn't make us too sad.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
Too, to Sony Spider Verse to Sony Spider Verse. Yeah, which.
Speaker 1 (49:51):
I'm gonna say, like, I like the Spider Man movies.
I like the Venom movies, but some of their stuff
is just way more of a miss than a hit.
And I think the new trailer for Craven is solidifying
that Craven will be a miss for me as well.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
Yeah, I think it's just based on the trailer, it
looks like it could be better than Morebs or Madam Webb,
but not as good as all the rest of the stuff.
Speaker 1 (50:24):
Yeah, because they took out all of the stuff that
made the first trailer like all of the exposition for
the storyline that was in the first trailer that was
just so dumb.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
Like giving giving, giving craven lion blood and that kind
of stuff.
Speaker 1 (50:38):
Yeah, I mean they kind of vaguely touch on it,
but it's much more of like a quick brush mentioned and.
Speaker 2 (50:44):
I will I will say that he is so jacked
in this trailer. Like I think of him as the
assassin in Bullet Train. Was it Bullet Train? Yeah, I
think of him in that role where he's Lemon. Yeah,
well he wasn't Lemon. The other one was he was Tangerine. Yeah,
I think of him as Tangerine, and like he was
(51:05):
like kind of wiry in that, right, Like he didn't
look jacked, but he is jacked for this movie.
Speaker 1 (51:13):
Yeah, I mean, was he jacked in Kick Ass?
Speaker 2 (51:16):
Not really? In fact, that was part of the gag, right,
was that he was kind of, you know, not good
at being a superhero. It's it blows my mind that
that's the same actor, because to have seen someone grow
up like that. First of all, it reminds me that
I'm old. But yeah, I I because I like the actor.
(51:38):
I want to like this more. And I went into
I went into it wanting to like it more because
like when I when I saw the original teaser, it
was before I had seen Bullet Train, And I don't
think Bullet Trains a very good movie, but I think
he is incredible in that movie. He's so entertaining.
Speaker 1 (51:56):
I think Bullet Train is a very fun movie.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Parts of it are fun and and I think I
think he and his UH scene partner Lemon Tangerine and
Lemon are like the highlight of that movie. I could
watch an entire movie about those two.
Speaker 1 (52:11):
Characters for sure. Yeah, I want to like the Sony Verse.
I want it to I want it to succeed. It
is interesting, Like I wonder if he's going to get
the same blowback that Aaron Taylor Johnson right that Hugh
Jackman is getting for extra Beef and out for Deadpool
(52:34):
and Wolverine, because some people are like, well, he's setting
unrealistic body standards because he wasn't that jacked in the
first X Men movie, And I'm like, he's gotten older
and wireyar and it looks like it to me, And
you know, they're being healthier than I ever was to
get this body, so I should not.
Speaker 2 (52:49):
I mean, apart from apart from perhaps dehydrating themselves for
like two days before shooting because they want to get
the skin as thin as possible, so those abs really pop.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
Yeah, but eating a lot of green beans and telapia
is good for you, So.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
So uh, we're gonna blast through some other Like. Of course,
I put horror movie and series trailers toward the end
of our episode because that's that's what I do. Not
on purpose this time, it's just because that's how things unfolded.
But we got a trailer for a what looks to
me kind of like a satire slash sort of horror
(53:26):
movie called The Substance with De me More in it,
and it's about an aging model it looks like who
is offered the chance to use this experimental genetic treatment
that revives her youth literally early. She's played by a
different person.
Speaker 1 (53:48):
Yeah, I think this is what this different person looks
like one of my friends. It always throws me whenever
I see her in something. It doesn't look too scary
for me, because, like you said, it's satirical. But I
will say, like, the trailer was so so fast, and
not just because I watched it on one point five.
Speaker 2 (54:09):
Speed though that helped by fifty percent by fifty percent.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
Look when when it's scary stuff, which you told me.
The substance was, I watch it a little faster so
that I can get through it and like it. Just
it's it seemed very manic, and maybe that's part of
the story point, like just all the fast paced can't
(54:35):
keep up hollywoodness, but had I had a hard time.
I had a hard time watching it.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
At one and a halftime speed, I think does contribute
to that. I didn't feel that because because I actually
have issues with stuff that has lots of quick cuts
and manic energy. It's why I've never been able to
sit through an entire Baz Lureman movie because the camera
ankles changed so far frequently that I can't there. It
(55:02):
breaks the continuity of the moment in my brain and
I can't follow it. Which is not to say that
the movies are bad, but that my brain is wired
in such a way where I just I am just
left kind of agog and not really comprehending what's going
on when I watch something like a Baz Lureman film.
And I didn't get that feeling with this. So maybe
(55:23):
the faster speed contributed to that. I thought it looked interesting, Like,
this is probably one I won't go see in the theater,
but I would. I can imagine myself watching it at home.
Speaker 1 (55:36):
Yeah, it does look interesting. It's definitely you know, Hollywood
has been agist. Hollywood and media in general has been
agis more towards women than men. Like men when they
get wrinkles, oh they're They're still handsome, they're solar fox.
And when when they get wrinkles, they're toldal, they look old.
As an actress, I feel this every day when I
(55:57):
look in the mirror and I'm like, ah, I want
to fix this, and I want to fix it, and
I want to fix this about myself. But it is
also hard to judge because I'm like, it is so
ingrained in my brain as a woman that I'm like,
would I if I didn't feel like society wanted it
to deem me beautiful? Would I still want it? And
I might? Yes, it might be my stay.
Speaker 2 (56:18):
I don't know, it's I mean, you're you're asking some
tough questions, which interestingly also spills over into our next story,
but only on a meta level. So next up, We've
got We've got a trailer called here After, where Connie
Britton plays a mom whose daughter essentially dies but is revived,
(56:41):
and after she's revived, it appears that she's brought something
back with her. So this looks like it's kind of
a demonic possession sort of film, or at least it's
raising that possibility. It looks like they're also trying to
play with the idea of maybe it's not maybe it's
a purely psychological thriller kind of movie. It's hard to
say based off the trailer, but the metapart was that
(57:03):
I showed Ariel that when I was looking at trailers
there were two instances of this trailer that were literally
next to each other, like one on top of the other,
and the thumbnail for one made Connie look a little
older and more haggard, and the thumbnail for the other,
which was the exact same picture, had been smoothed over
(57:25):
and made her look a little less old. And I
think the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think
both pictures have been manipulated to some degree.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
Yeah, again, I understand that there is a frustration that
they shouldn't have to manipulate it, but maybe, like I
feel like you're going to manipulate a photo make it more,
and it isn't the point. The point of this movie
here after is not that this woman looks so rough
(57:56):
because of what she's going through. She does look worried
and rough because of what she's going through, but that's
not the point of the movie, right. So if you
are going to touch somebody, do it in their favor
and not to their detriment. I get that there's frustration
that you people would feel the need to do it
at all. But I might have been like, oh, that's
a cool shot, but I don't quite like the way
(58:17):
I look in it in a still photo. Could you
touch it up? And so I'm if the actress isn't upset,
I'm not going to be upset.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
Yeah. I don't know how anyone feels about it. To me,
it's just it was the fact that these two different
versions of the same thumbnail appeared literally next to each other,
which is just you know, just by the search algorithm
on YouTube. It's not like it was done on purpose
that way. It just happened. That made me even notice,
(58:44):
Like if I had seen them and they had been
separated from each other, like there have been a few
other thumbnails in between, I probably wouldn't have even clocked it,
but the fact that they were right next to each
other made it really obvious.
Speaker 1 (58:57):
Yeah, yeah, for sure. This next trailer I also watched
on one point five speed, and I only watched bits
of it because there were some things in it that
hit my no button.
Speaker 2 (59:08):
Oh my gosh, Aeriel. So it's a series that's coming
out on Hulu called Grotesquaie, And the fact that you
watched a one point five I'm like, it must have
just looked like colors to you.
Speaker 1 (59:22):
No. No, I followed it. I followed the storyline. It
was the meat grinder. The meat grinder made me go.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
But I'm sure you've used a meat grinder, right, I
have one.
Speaker 1 (59:32):
I grind a really good beef bacon burger. It's very good.
But yes, watching it in context with the rest of
this trailer, Jonathan made it look like that was people
meat and that creeps me out.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
I just looked like regular old pork and beef. See.
I don't eat mammals, so to me, you would think
it would creep me out anyway, whether it's people or otherwise.
But uh, to me, it was funny because Nissi Nash
is playing the lead in this, and I think of
her from Reno nine one one, Right, she's one of
the sheriffs in or part of the sheriff's department in
(01:00:09):
Reno nine one one. So to see her taking on
a serious role in like a a supernatural police procedural
is really doing a number on my noodle.
Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
I I but I love when comedic actors get a
chance to play serious.
Speaker 2 (01:00:27):
And I'm sure she'll do a great job. It's just
getting past. Like when I hear that voice, I can't
help but think that Dangle's gonna come around the corner,
or you know, Garcia is gonna be shouting something incredibly inappropriate.
So that's no fault of hers. But I will say
like this looked like it was reminding me of Edgar
(01:00:49):
Wright in the sense of the lighting, like Edgar Wright,
like Last Night in Soho, kind of which owed a
lot to Italian jallo movies. But uh, this this felt
like it was taking a lot of notes from that.
Speaker 1 (01:01:05):
I Yeah, I feel like it's it's the the visuals
of Edgar Wright with the story line of True Detective,
because it's about someone investigating murders who pairs up with
a nun and there's a lot of like bad stuff
going on in the small town.
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
Yeah, I uh, I think I agree. Like I'm intrigued
and if I if I have Hulu later this year,
maybe I'll watch it. If I remember in November that
that's when I can add Hulu to my bundle, then
maybe I'll watch it.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
You'll probably remember because we're gonna keep talking about Hulu shows.
Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
Yeah, but I mean we also open We've got so
like I don't know about you, but my the last
little leg of this year, I've got so many trips
lined up that I might be missing some episodes I did.
Speaker 1 (01:01:56):
I did all of my trips at the beginning.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
I've got I've got a trip to two trips to Pennsylvania,
a trip to Florida. There's another one that I can't
remember it because I got like, oh, I've got one
to California and one to Texas coming up.
Speaker 1 (01:02:14):
So I might also have a trip to Pennsylvania. I
don't know, but but that would be it for this year. Really.
Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
Yeah. Well, last up, we have some interesting science news
from the Red planet.
Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
Yeah. So scientists use some technology that they use on
Earth to find water underground and oil and crude oils
and things like that on Mars, and they found out
that there's a bunch of water deep under Mars that
not all of it had been lost to space. And
I put this in our lineup because there's a whole
(01:02:53):
Doctor episode Doctor Who episode about people who have a base,
like scientists who have a base on Mars, and they're
using the water under Mars as they're drinking water, and
they get infected with like this creature called the flood
and they all like are basically taken over infested by
this creature and turn evil and it's a really scary episode.
(01:03:16):
It's it's kind of a sad episode of Doctor Who.
And I'm like, please, please, please do not tap into
that water, as cool as it is, because we've learned
Doctor Who told us that it'll be bad.
Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
Well, I don't think we need to worry about that
anytime soon because we have no way of getting it
back here yet.
Speaker 1 (01:03:35):
But they were drinking it on the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
Yeah, I'm saying, like, we we humans here on the
real planet Earth have no way of returning the water
here and we have no one going to Mars, so
there's no risk of ingesting Martian water in the near future.
And if it does happen. It'll happen to Elon Musk,
and I can't think of a nicer guy for it
(01:03:58):
to happen to.
Speaker 1 (01:04:00):
I was going to say, you don't know if there's
really a tartist out there, but your stinger was better than.
Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
Well. I think this is super cool news. Like you said,
you know, the fact that Mars' atmosphere is so thin
means that water on the surface would very easily boil
off and then potentially get lost to space. On Mars
as such weak gravity, and no, it doesn't have like
(01:04:28):
the magnetosphere that Earth has, like it's magnetosphere as far
less strong, so radiation from the Sun impacts Mars the
surface of Mars much more than it would the surface
of Earth. So the fact that they were able to
discover this, that's phenomenal. It always brings up new questions,
which is exciting because science is all about finding new
questions and trying to find the answers. So I think
(01:04:50):
that's really neat.
Speaker 1 (01:04:52):
Yeah, I didn't need to overshadow the cool with the
horrifying blood.
Speaker 2 (01:04:56):
No, I think that was good too. I thought that
was cool too. Like I, I'm not familiar with that
Doctor Who episode. I will say, calling your your infection,
the flood just makes me think of Halo because because
that's what the that's what the parasitic creatures that can
latch onto intelligent life and corrupt them, they are called
(01:05:17):
the flood.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
So well, it's very similar. So I don't I don't
know that maybe I got it wrong, or maybe they
took it from Halo, or maybe Halo took it Doctor
who would have taken it from Halo? I'm pretty sure
Halo predates that episode of Doctor.
Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
I'm not certain, gotcha? Well, that I think is all
of our news.
Speaker 1 (01:05:38):
Yeah, So, Jonathan, if folks want to reach out to
us to talk about what they're excited from D twenty three,
we're excited about from D twenty three, I swear I
can make sentences or to tell us anything else that's funny, geek?
How do they do that?
Speaker 2 (01:05:55):
So you're gonna travel down to Kassimi, Florida, and you're
gonna buy yourself a ticket to the Magic Kingdom. You're
gonna go to the Transportation of Ticket Center because that's
the only way you're gonna get to the Magic Kingdom.
You're gonna either take the monorail or the ferry. I
recomend the ferry. It's a nice ride, and you're gonna
go on across the bay and get to the Magic King.
(01:06:16):
You're gonna go march down Main Street, take in the atmosphere.
It's nice. You're gonna get over into that kind of
hub area where the castle is. I'm gonna need you
to make a bee line for Frontier Land, and as
you're walking there, you're gonna go along the Rivers of America,
which are not long for this world, so enjoy that
(01:06:37):
while that lasts. And then you're gonna walk along. You're
gonna take a left at the Rivers of America. Walk
down that way. You're eventually gonna come to the actual
landing where you can get on a raft that will
take you over to Tom Sawyer Island, assuming it's open
that day. Your odds are not good. But if it
is open that day, you're gonna take that raft on
(01:06:59):
over to Tom Sawyer Island, going to get off the raft,
walk onto the island. You're going to look for the cave.
It used to be called Engine Joe's Cave. But you know,
obviously that's very insensitive, even though it's referencing an actual
Mark Twain character. But you're gonna find that cave. You're
gonna have to go into there. It's gonna get pretty dark.
If you have bad low light vision, that's going to
(01:07:21):
be an issue. I hope you don't, because that's the
reason I'm there. I'm kind of stuck and I can't
find my way out, so I need you to come
and get me and lead me back out to the entrance,
and then I'll be happy to answer whatever question you have.
Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
Yeah, and if you've never been to tom Sawyer Island
and like me, and therefore and you get very lost,
so you just know that you will not be able
to complete this quest and Jonathan's just going to have
to live in that cave forever. You can reach out
