Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, everybody, Welcome to the Large nerdron Collider. The podcast.
It's all about the key things happening in the world
around us and how I'm very excited we are about them.
I'm Jonathan Strickland and with me is nobody. But that's
because Ariel had a lot of travel this past week
and she needs some time to catch up on things,

(00:30):
so she suggested I do a quick update episode so
that we don't just spontaneously skip a week, as we
are often wont to do. Now that being said, we
do have some stuff coming up at the end of
this month August twenty twenty five. So for one thing,
dragon Con is at the end of August beginning of September,
Ariel's participating in some stuff over there. I will be

(00:53):
safely at home playing with my dog, and then right
after dragon Con, I'll be going on a vacation. So
I anticipate that we will have no new episodes for
August twenty ninth. Definitely not an episode on September fifth,
because I will be on a boat with no access
to internet at that point, but after that will be

(01:13):
back as per normal. And there's also no question this
week because that doesn't make any sense. But I will
say I actually saw two movies since the last time
Ariel and I recorded. First up, I saw the new
The Naked Gun film, which I thought was okay. You know,
I didn't think it was great, but it also wasn't bad.

(01:35):
It made some jokes that definitely were transgressive, but mostly
it was just very silly, and I'm on board with that.
I think Liam Neeson was mostly fine in the role.
Occasionally he was quite good. I thought Pamela Anderson's performance
was literally the highlight of the movie. That woman deserves
her flowers for being willing to be so dang silly.

(01:57):
She did a great job, So I guess it a
mild recommendation. I think it's okay to wait for it
to come out on streaming, which you might be forced
to do because I don't know if it's still in
theaters like you had a very short run in the
theaters near me. I also saw Weapons, the new film
by Zach Kreiger as the director who also did Barbarian.

(02:20):
He was also a member of the Whitest Kids. You know,
a lot of y'all out there may have already seen
this movie. It has been incredibly popular, even when I
saw it. It was at an off time and the
theater still had a pretty good number of people in it,
which included by the way, a bebe so quick public
service announcement, don't bring your bebe to a horror movie.

(02:42):
I understand that parents have limited opportunities to engage in
activities that they enjoy. I get that. I understand, like
I can't get a sitter, and I really want to
see this movie. But here's the thing. One of the
consequences of being a parent to a baby is that
you don't get to do all the stuff you usually
would love to do. You just have to suck it

(03:03):
up and endure it because you're a parent, and that's
what that means. It's unfair also to inflict upon a
paying audience the experience of hearing your baby understandably crying
while being subjected to loud noises in a movie theater.
It was not a fun experience for any of us,
So don't do it anyway. As for the movie itself,

(03:26):
I actually really really liked it. In fact, I loved Weapons.
I liked Barbarian. I had some issues with it, but
I much prefer Weapons to Barbarian. It's one of those
movies where the less you know going in the better.
So if you haven't seen it yet, avoid any more
information about it and then go see it, assuming you

(03:47):
like horror movies. That is. It also has a very
slow build I will say that, like I was starting
to get worried as I was watching because it was
such a I like slow builds, like I like a
slow burned with a movie, but this was starting to
feel it. You know where you're thinking, wow, this movie
is going to be long, and it is. It's a

(04:08):
little over two hours, but it feels long in that
build up. However, once things start to pay off, the
pace picks up considerably and the payoff is phenomenal. It
is worth it, so highly recommended. If you like horror movies,
you owe it to yourself to see this. I think

(04:29):
it works great on the big screen, so I recommend
seeing it in a theater if you can. Obviously, if
you can't, then you know you can wait till streaming.
I don't think it'll hurt it. Although the sound design
on this movie I feel works best if you are
watching it in a theater. There's one moment in particular

(04:50):
where you can't see what's happening on screen, but you
can hear something, and the entire theater where I was
react did like it was one of those oh kind
of moments. So if you can see it in a
theater with a good sound system, definitely make the effort.

(05:11):
It is worth it in my opinion. All Right, so
now to some news stuff. Now, I'm not going to
do the whole thirty seconds or less thing because that
means having to do way more editing and it's just me.
So here's a quick rundown on what was in our
thirty seconds or less section. First up, New Line Cinema
is reportedly exploring the option of making a Weapons prequel,

(05:32):
which is no big surprise considering the success of that movie.
No word if Zach Kreiger would actually be involved with that.
I don't know if he'd even be interested. He might
feel like he told his story and that he's kind
of moved on from that. I don't know. From a
business perspective, I totally get it. From a creative perspective,
I would really prefer they just leave the property alone,

(05:55):
unless Craigor himself has an idea and wants to do
it and doesn't just feel obligated because this was a success.
I think it could totally stand on its own. I
don't think we need a prequel. Obviously. Prequels are issue.
You know they have issues anyway, because you know the
fate of characters. Assuming that there are characters who cross

(06:15):
over into Weapons, you already know what their fate is
because you've seen the second chapter, right, So I don't
really get the desire. I can understand why they don't
want to do a sequel. That's all I'll say about that.
Next up, Austin Abrams, who plays a supporting role in Weapons,
is going to be a lead in Craiger's next movie,

(06:37):
which is an adaptation of the Resident Evil games. Now,
there have already been several Resident Evil movies. They have
at best a tenuous connection to the video games, and
they're not really very good. Craiger says he's a fan
of the games and he wants to tell his own
story set either within the general lore or maybe even

(06:58):
just the vibe of the game series, which intrigues me.
I would hope that he would avoid the pitfalls that
I perceived with the Until Dawn film adaptation, where I
was like, this movie feels like it's the opposite of
what the Until Dawn game was doing, where and until
Dawn it was like a butterfly effect, your choices would

(07:23):
determine your fate and like a small choice could have
a big impact later down the road. And meanwhile the
film was like time loop, which is the opposite where
your choices don't matter because things will just loop again.
So hopefully the Resident Evil movie won't have a similar
path where you're like, why do you even call it

(07:43):
Resident Evil? Apart from cashing in on the IP. But
we'll have to wait and see. Next up, Shrek five
has hit another delay. So originally Shrek five was supposed
to come out July first, twenty twenty six. It then
got pushed back to December twenty third, twenty twenty six,
and now Variety reports that it has been pushed back
again to June thirtieth, twenty twenty seven. Now I'm not

(08:06):
really surprised by this. Animated films take a really long
time to produce, and I would much rather a studio
take that time rather than push animators into crunch time
for weeks on end. It could also be that maybe
the calendar is filling up and that the desire is
to release Shrek where it will stand a good chance

(08:27):
to perform really well and won't be up against stuff competition.
There's probably a combination going on there. Earlier this year,
Universal's rights to the Jason Bourne IP lapsed. Now the
Hollywood Reporter states that Universal has reacquired the film rights
in perpetuity. It just means that you know, they have
the film rights forever, or until Universal itself crumbles into dust.

(08:51):
Not that I'm saying that's going to happen, but it
has happened to media companies before. Anyway. This gives Universal
the right to continue developing projects in the world of
Jason Bourne for as long as they like, and last
up in our little news segment that normally would be
thirty seconds or less. There's been some conflicting information from

(09:12):
the stars of the Daredevil series as to whether season
two it will be the final season or not. Charlie
Cox appeared at Galaxy Quest earlier this summer and said
that season two was the final season, but he said
in kind of a weird way where maybe he just
met this most recent season, not this is it. This

(09:35):
is the final season. Because Vincent Donaforio said there's a
good chance for a third season. So was Cox just
using some confusing wording or is this a case of
wishful thinking on Vincent's part. I just don't know. Okay. Now,
for our stuff that doesn't fit segment, we had three trailers.

(09:56):
First up was Dead of Winter. It's a thriller starring
Emma tom who travels to a remote region up north,
like in a big snowy, icy region, in order to
spread the ashes of a loved one, and she witnesses
what is an apparent kidnapping. She then tries to help
a young woman who seems to be held captive by

(10:17):
a shady couple. And it looks pretty intense and violent
and I've never seen Thompson in a role like this,
so I am actually really interested. It comes out September
twenty sixth, and honestly, like this trailer was enough for
me to say, Hm, this like a it could be
a pretty good thriller, So I don't really want to
watch or read up too much more on this. Switching

(10:40):
from winter to Summer, we got a trailer for Griffin
in Summer. This is a coming of age film that
follows a young and eccentric boy named Griffin and Griffin
loves the theater. Like the stage, he actually writes his
own plays, and he casts his friends in the roles
the plays, and he puts them on in like his

(11:02):
basement or something. So his mother, who's kind of, you know,
bemused by her son, hires on a young man to
be her to be a handyman around the house. So
this young man looks like he's, you know, maybe in
his early twenties. And Griffin obviously develops a crush on

(11:24):
this guy and finds his art fascinating, so he begins
to write a new play that's inspired by this guy,
and he even casts the guy in the play. And
the movie looks cute and quirky. The film was initially
screened at various festivals way back in the summer of
twenty twenty four, but it's getting a wider release on
August twenty ninth, so coming up pretty soon. Then there

(11:48):
was a trailer for a documentary called Stans. This explores
the fandom of rap artist Eminem who has a song
called Stan. It's all about an obsessive, like fixated and
sort of a parasocial relationship. So the documentary has interviews
with the artist, the people around him, as well as

(12:08):
his fans, who, many of whom express a self reflective
time of their lives where they began to worry that
perhaps they were stan like they were the type of
fan being referenced in Eminem's song. And I included this
in our lineup because obviously, fandom is at the heart

(12:29):
of what this show is all about. And we have
spoken several times in the past about how fandoms can
be uplifting or they can sometimes be toxic. Occasionally they
can be both uplifting for the people within them and
toxic to everybody else. And while this documentary is specifically
about Eminem, I think it's quite possible that the ideas

(12:50):
that it explores are going to be more broadly applicable
to fandoms in general. I mean, obviously there are other
artists who have had crazy fandoms rise up around them,
not just artists but properties, right like I always think
of Star Wars as having some of the most toxic
fans out there, a subset of Star Wars fans, not

(13:12):
all Star Wars fans. Obviously, same is true with Firefly.
We talked about that recently, where you know, Firefly fans
aren't necessarily toxic, but there's a subset that definitely are
Joss Whedon fans in general kind of have this where
there's like a subset that are pretty toxic. But I'm
sure that's true in all subcultures to some degree. Anyway,

(13:36):
it looks interesting. The documentary comes out on August twenty
sixth on Paramount Plus. Now over to John Boy's Horror Hutch.
I only have one trailer in the Horror Hutch this week,
and I'm not going to do the music for this either,
which is probably clear already anyway. The trailers for a
film called five, And according to the description, this is

(13:59):
a horrorrror comedy about an actress who is desperate to
have another hit after her career has taken kind of
a noseedive. She's been in a string of poorly performing films,
and she also has just emerged from a stint in rehab.
And she is in a low budget rom com. Apparently

(14:19):
it's using a remote, old spooky cabin as one of
its locations. But then the actress seems to be possessed
by some sort of demonic force that resides in the cabin,
and as you might imagine, this throws the whole production
into a little bit of a pickle. The trailer actually
leans a little harder into the horror aspect than the comedy.

(14:40):
There are some comedic elements to it, like there's some
things that are framed in a semi comedic way, but
it really seems to be pushing the horror side. It
looks interesting. It's going to have its premiere at FrightFest
in London on August twenty third, but I didn't see
any information about a wider release yet, so it may
be that it hasn't really been picked up by a distributor.

(15:02):
I'll just have to keep my eyes open. It looks
like something I would dig, so I'll keep looking to
see if there are any updates. Also, naming your movie
five kind of stinks, only because if you try to
google stuff like five, then you're gonna get a lot
of lists instead of the actual movie you're looking for,

(15:23):
and be like five horror movies to watch out for
in twenty twenty five. Not very helpful. Okay. Now for
the trailers that were in our actual official lineup, some
of which could arguably have fit in the Horror Hutch
well one in particular, which is called Rabbit Trap. It's
a horror film starring Dev Patel directed by Brn Cheney.
This movie is set in the nineteen seventies and features

(15:46):
a couple who accidentally stumble into a fairy ring. They
are then visited by an unsettling young boy and witness
lots of weird stuff. And that's about all I could
get out of the trailer, you know, like he's of
Ptel's character is recording sound out in the world, and
he comes across like a weird almost like a song,

(16:08):
but very discordant. So there's a lot of this kind
of weird imagery and sounds that are included in the trailer.
And I read up on some reviews because this movie
has screened at various festivals, and sadly, it seems like
the consensus is that the movie is more interested in

(16:29):
creating that sort of tone and having weird visuals and
stuff like that, rather than having a coherent story. And
I'm kind of bummed because I would love a horror
movie that's steeped in, say, Welsh mythology. But it sounds
like this was an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt at
something like that. Now, maybe the reviewers are wrong, but

(16:52):
a lot of them have very similar things to say,
particularly when it comes to the conclusion of the movie.
So we'll have to see anyway. The film comes out
September twelfth. I'll probably wait for this to come to
streaming because based on what I have heard, it sounds
like like I would also be frustrated by this movie.
Maybe not, but I get that feeling, and I don't

(17:13):
really want to take the time and money to go
see something that ultimately is going to be irritated by.
Then we have Killing Faith, which is a supernatural western film.
It stars Guy Pearce. So in this movie, there is
a black woman who has a daughter who is white
and blonde, and the girl apparently has the touch of death,

(17:36):
like literally, like this is a little girl and when
she touches stuff, it dies. So she's usually wearing mittens,
allah elsa and frozen. Her mother seeks out the help
of a doctor played by Guy Pearce. This doctor has
a reputation of being really bad in his job, like
his patients typically do not recover, and Guy Pearce is

(17:59):
playing kind of very weary and skeptical and kind of
like a burnout Bill Pullman plays a preacher slash faith
healer whom the mother hopes will heal her daughter. He
seems to be kind of sinister in the trailers. In fact,

(18:20):
he is sinister. At one point he does apparently kidnap
the girl. There are witches, there's religious horror elements, there's
some Western tropes that are in the trailer. It's really
a wild high concept and it comes up October third. Also, yes,
when I was working on my notes, i wrote Bill
Paxton instead of Bill Pullman, even though Paxton passed away

(18:41):
in twenty seventeen, because my brain is dumb. Next up,
I watched a trailer for a Korean fantasy romantic drama
series called bona Petit Your majesty. This is another wild
high concept project. I love this idea. It's wack adoodle.
So there's Our protagonist is a woman named Jon Gijong

(19:05):
who works as a modern day chef. She's a French
chef and she's competing in sort of an iron chef
kind of competition, and she suddenly finds herself mysteriously transported
back into the Joson period of Korea. My apologies for
my pronunciation. By the way, I am an ignorant westerner.

(19:25):
But I had to look up the Josion period because
I wasn't totally familiar with it. But this is an
era in Korea that lasted like half a millennium. It
started in thirteen ninety two and ended in eighteen ninety seven. Anyway,
Yon Jijong uses her skills and knowledge as a chef
to endear herself to the King of Joson, a guy

(19:48):
named Lee Jon who has a discerning palate, so he
is kind of a foodie, but he's also a total
tyrannical jerk fase And the series has already aired in Korea,
but it comes to Netflix on August twenty third, And yeah,
I was like, what a cool idea. I kind of
like this idea of, you know, someone who is just

(20:11):
a normal person who isn't connected to any kind of
like secret project or anything, but suddenly finds themselves transported
back in time. How do they cope? How did they survive?
Because we often think, oh, well, I have so much
more knowledge, But I also love the various comedies out
there that play upon the fact that most average people

(20:32):
don't have enough working knowledge to be able to navigate
a world that is in the past. Anyway. We also
got a very short video showing some of the work
on the first day of shooting for Spider Man Brand
New Day. In the video, you can see Tom Holland
in costume. You can see him getting wired up and

(20:53):
doing some stunts. You can also see a crowd of
people watching, like not extras, like just people who are
on the borders of the shoot watching what's going on.
And he even takes some time to say hi to
some of these folks, and that's come on, that's too much,
mister Holland, You're being too awesome of a person. He
also seems to be genuinely happy to be reunited with

(21:15):
crew members he's worked with before. He just seems like
a really good guy. And I'm asking you, mister Holland,
please tone it down so that losers like I am
are feel a little less inadequate. But seriously, it looks
like he and the crew are both working really hard
but also having a really good time, and that's great

(21:35):
to see. I'm hoping that the movie benefits from that
kind of energy once it's in the can. Finally, we
got a trailer for Lego Disney Princess Villains Unite The
title pretty much tells you everything you need to know.
It's a lego movie features various Disney princesses in lego form,
kind of because the minifig versions of the princesses look

(21:58):
a little more elongated and and princess like than minifig like. Actually,
that's one of my big complaints is that I don't
like the character design in this. I don't think that
they are lego enough. But it has like the sense
of humor of a Lego movie, and obviously different Disney
villains are plotting something. They include villains like Ursula, Ja'afar, Gaston,

(22:23):
the Evil Queen, and Prince John from the Robin Hood movie,
although he's not named in this anyway, they all have
nefarious plans and the princesses need to figure out what
those are and to stop them. It looks cute, but again,
the minifig design, I don't really like it. I don't
think it looks like the minifigs of the other Lego movies,

(22:45):
and that kind of I'm like, why you should just
really go whole hog into that. I think that's what
makes them cute. But anyway, this movie is gonna be
out on Disney Plus on August twenty fifth. That is it.
So I hope all of y'all out there are doing well.
If you'd like to reach out to us well, Ariel

(23:05):
usually handles that. So go and listen to the end
of a different episode because I am making myself scarce
while I prep for my vacation on a boat. I'll
see you next time. The Large Nerdron Collider was created
