Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, everybody. Welcome to the large and new Drunk Collider podcast,
the podcast that's all about the geeky things happening in
the world around us and how very excited we are
about them. I'm Ariel Caston and with me is always
is the fantastic Jonathan Strickland.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
And we're not just excited about them, we're thankful for them.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
We are thankful for them. You're a little bit early, Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, because we're not recording. I mean, it's the last
episode before Thanksgiving. We're not recording after Thanksgiving. I'm going
to get that out of the way. At the very top,
we're gonna take next Friday off for the holiday. We're
both gonna be, you know, kind of in that post
turkey stupor that where we don't really want to talk
(00:55):
about geeky things. We just want to nap or an
Ariel's case, into a house full of guests.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yes, I Thanksgiving is the big thing that we do
every year in my household, and this year we have
twenty people on the day of. But we're gonna have
house guests all the way through Sunday next week, all
the way through Sunday, and that means We're also going
to have people over our house all the way through Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I can't even imagine having enough space to put food
for twenty people like that, to me is insane.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
We have this giant sectional couch in our living room.
It takes up an entire wall. It didn't when we
bought it, but when we moved in this place, our
living rooms a bit smaller. That moves into Tony's office.
Tony's office moves into our basement. Our living room and
dining room are connected, so that becomes the giant table
for everybody to sit at. We move our end tables
and coffee tables around the edge of the room so
(01:52):
that becomes where we put like appetizers and things, and
then the actual buffet of food goes into the entryway.
We put hot plates on a folding table out there,
and then people grab their plates off the table go
get food. We usually play the Benny Hill theme song
because throughout the years there has been a varying amount
of space for people to get around, and it's usually
a bit of a bonker's time.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
So yeah, So if you were wondering what Michael Bay's
next Transformers movie is, it's Ariel's Place, which transforms from
a tranquil home into a crazy feeding frenzy.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Michael Bay, if you're listening, I am up for this.
We can totally do a Thanksgiving themed Transformers at Home
cozy movie. It's good, It'll be great, It'll be great.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Oh, I'm sure it's going to be fantastic. And I
have never attended one of Ariel's Thanksgiving not because it
wasn't invited.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yes, you're always invited, you know that.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
I mean there was only that one, like five year
stretch where we just weren't talking to each other because
you know, I sold her a horse, but I delivered
a mule. It was just one of those things.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Ye yeah, you know. And no, I was about to
make a really bad joke, but I'm I'm going to
edit myself.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I mean I made that up. Well, I didn't make
it up. I stole it from Fiddler on the Roof.
But yeah, like.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Mules and donkeys and most animals, it.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Probably wouldn't have even been a thing. You've just been like, hey,
you're gonna have to spot me the difference, because because
a horse goes for more than a mule does. Uh, yeah,
we're I'll be spending Thanksgiving with my parents, and it's
just going to be my folks and my partner and
I and Timbolt will also be there. Upon request, we
(03:36):
were going to put him up in daycare, but my
parents said no, bring him over. We haven't seen him
in a while, and their dogs will be in daycare,
so that Timblet doesn't like start World War three in
their living room. But yeah, so we'll be heading over there.
But that means we're going to take a break, which
I think everybody who observes Thanksgiving they should take that
(03:59):
time to be thank full and rested, hopefully not not
wade into the madness that is Black Friday if they
can avoid it. I mean, I understand deals, but Black
Friday is just to me, that's just a pit of
chaos that I do not want to dip my toe into.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Well, I the month leading up to Thanksgiving, there's always
a bit of prep in my house. What do we
still need? What like? What do we need to replace
from previous years, like warming trace that had been broken
and Black Friday deals have been going on this entire month,
so there's really no need to go out the day
after Thanksgiving. Let those people stay at home and rest.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
We saw that start like years ago where we got
Cyber Monday, right the Monday following Black Friday, and even
in the olden days before the Internet, there would be
stores that would start running specials leading up to Black Friday.
There's one item I have asked my partner for one
thing for Christmas which she might be able to get
(05:08):
for pretty cheap on Black Friday, which, if you're curious,
is just a new pair of earbuds that are like
over the ear, like the little hooks after so well,
that would also work, but I was thinking maybe like
in ear earbuds, but they have like the over the
ear like hook because my my ear canals are pretty tiny,
(05:29):
so they have a habit of giving birth to earbuds
at inopportune moments. And I'm gonna have to go into
the office more next year, which means which means taking Marta,
which is our public transportation system here in Atlanta, And
I just have this irrational fear of having earbuds in
my ears as I'm about to get on a train
or bus and then one of the earbuds pops out.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
At that Grogan pulls you onto the tracks and laughs
maniacally as it becomes a super villain.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I mean, that's also a possibility that I had entertained.
But I know what my nightmare will be tonight. Yeah,
So I asked her if she would get me a
pair of earbuds that have a hook on it, because
I'm like, I don't want to. I have a nice
pair of Bluetooth headphones, but they're bulky, like, I don't
want to wear those on public transportation. It's a little
(06:19):
too much.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
I mean, there's a there's a there's a nice middle
ground that you could do, which is order for pickup
at a store and repay and that way you're online.
It's not really taking I hope not anybody's time. I
hope all that's all automated and then they can pull
it the next day when you go to pick it up.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Well, the nice thing is I'm not the one who
has to do it, so I don't really care how
she does it.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
No, I know, and I don't.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
I don't want her to have to go out on
Black Friday, though. I just if we can find a
deal where it's like, oh, look, that's kind of what
I wanted. It's twelve bucks, Like I don't need a
fancy pair either. I want to be clear. It's just
I'm gonna my commute is gonna be at least two
and a half hours each day.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Yeah, I mean, well, one, that's ridiculous. We won't necessarily
get into that here but or right now unless you
really want to. But like, it should be sales Saturday,
not Black Friday, at least at least because like, I've
had friends who have done Black Friday deals and then
gone into retail and had to work Black Friday, and
(07:24):
they're like, I feel bad I ever did this, And
I know there was actually a big push this year
for people not to shop on Black Friday.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
In wait, yeah, I've only ever done it maybe twice
in my entire life. And I didn't feel good in
either instance. I felt like I was and I mean
I felt like it because it was true. I felt
like I was part of the problem. So but yeah,
I any of y'all out there, you retail warriors, if
(07:52):
you're working Black Friday, just know we love you, we
see you, we appreciate you, and we wish you a
safe work day.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Same now, I will say my mom used to do grocery.
She used to be a cashier at a grocery and
she loved the holidays because everybody was tended to be
in a better mood and talkative, and you get to
talk to people about what they had for their plans.
But that's that's different too.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, sad, No, it's that's not what you get on
Black Friday. No, not on Black Friday. You get that.
You remember that scene in Brave Heart where the two
armies are rushing at each other as fast as they can. Yeah,
but let's put that aside. You crafted the question this week,
which is somewhat holiday thief, although my answer is not.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Yeah, it's a bit of a mouthful. So, because Thanksgiving
is full of cooking and oftentimes creativity, for better or worse,
I wanted to talk about recipes. You all know by
now that I love cooking and bacon baking more than cooking,
like actual baking, not waking bacon.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
But not four twenty just blaze it.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Yeah, but actual baking, like great British style. So what
is one of your favorite recipes? It doesn't have to
you said, it doesn't have to be holiday themed.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yes, Well, my favorite holiday themed one, I'll just go
ahead and say is my Mom's squash cast role, which
is phenomenal, and she is making it for this Most
of our Thanksgiving meal we have ordered so to so
just to take the pressure off of having to cook,
you know, And so we're going to be picking that
up from a restaurant here in Atlanta. But Mom is
(09:33):
gonna supplement the food that we get with her famous
squash castle. Famous in my mind, I've often said that
if we're celebrating my birthday, she doesn't need to make
a cake or get a cake or anything. Just make
a squash castle, put a candle in it, and I'm happy.
It's It's no dessert food. It is savory, but it's
(09:54):
just so comforting. It's it's I associate it with holiday
because we would often have as one of our sides.
But for my own personal favorite recipes, there's one that
Ariel reminded me of because were you talking to a
friend of the show, say Lee about.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
This, I was, I was at one of your birthday gatherings.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yeah, so shee must have revealed to Ariel that she
had discovered the joy of banana and mayo sandwiches from
me and to some of y'all out there, that might
sound weird a banana and mayonnaise sandwich. But in the
seventies when times were tough, sometimes the food you could
(10:39):
afford were things like fresh fruit, mayonnaise, and bread. And
so this is not just a me thing. This was
like a especially in the South, kind of like an
affordable food option. And I remember as a kid being introduced.
Now there's some caveats. The mayonnaise has to be Duke's mayo.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
None of that miracle whip stuff, which I don't even
count as maynags.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Can't be miracle whip, can't be Helmans. Not that Helmans
is a bad mayo, don't get me wrong. It's just
Dukes has the right level of tanginess to counterbalance the
sweetness from the banana. So you get the tanginess from
the mayonnaise, you get the sweetness from the banana, and
the bread just is there to hold everything together and
(11:24):
make sure they get all comfy. There's your weird recipe.
If we're talking about something I like to make. This
isn't weird. It's just it's one of those things that
I think is for a long time was unknown in
the States, but people are more aware of it now,
and unfortunately, it's something that aerial can't have, which is
(11:46):
shak shuka tomato and egg based recipe where you cook
a tomato sauce till it gets super thick so that
you can scrape the bottom of the pan with a
spoon and it'll still whole. You poach some eggs in it,
and then you can serve it up. And there are
(12:06):
lots of different versions. The one I tend to do
is actually use this more Italian seasonings than North African seasonings.
North Africa is really the region where it's it's mostly known.
And I like those versions too, Don't get me wrong,
it's just the version I make tends to be more
Italian in style. But those are my answers.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Gotcha for me? My favorite weird recipe, and it is
a holiday one. Here's the thing, I don't think it's
that weird when our friend brought it to Thanksgiving, and
when he did, it was considered weird. I have since
seen other people who know about it, and it's something
(12:47):
you can find online, but the majority of people I
know haven't tried it and don't know what it is.
And maybe it's like a northern versus Southern thing. I
don't know, it's pineapple stuff or pineapple castrole, where you
take pineapple and cheddar cheese and you bake it together
with a little bit of flour and a little bit
of salt and a little bit of sugar, and you
put ritz crackers on top and you bake that and
it makes like a pineapple cheddar castrole.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
God, this sounds like something straight out of the Midwest.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
It's so good. It is so good. In fact, I
have taken that and I've turned it into many cheddar
pineapple muffins before, which is not as good as the
pineapple stuff, And everybody's like, don't like, don't judge it
before you try it. Just try it. It's really good.
And there are a lot of Midwestern solads that I'm
not even gonna bother to try. But this pineapple stuff
(13:34):
is chef's kiss.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Okay, well you heard it here, folks. I mean, like,
it doesn't It's not the weirdest thing I've ever heard about,
to be sure, but I can certainly say I never
would have thought of it. Yeah, but then I've also
I also was unfamiliar with things like like the some
regions where they'll put like slices of cheese on apple pie,
(13:58):
and I get it like cheese apples. Like, that's kind
of like you get that with cheeseboards sometimes, right, I understand,
but I had never really seen that done before. Yeah,
that was new to me.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
I also like, and this isn't super weird, it's just
not a lot of people do it. Putting balsamic or
honey onto your vanilla ice cream.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
Oh yeah, no, that I've that I have done before.
I've also dipped my toe figuratively speaking, not literally because
that'd be gross, but in like ice creams that have
savory elements, not a truly savory ice cream. I've never
had an ice cream that was not sweet at all,
(14:41):
but I've done. I mean I talked about the pickle
the pickle milkshake I had at Epcot, which was a mistake.
Actually I didn't hate it, I just did the more
I drank of it, the less good I felt. So
I think I think I left like a fifth of
it undrunk.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
You want just like a tiny bit, you don't you
want like a shot worth of pickle shake. You don't
want a whole.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Shake with Yeah, they gave me instead a mason jar
filled with pickled milkshake. But I like, I've had a
rosemary olive oil ice cream before and that was quite good.
Where you would get those notes at the end.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Yeah, there's a sorbet that I want to make, So
I make this long. My husband makes the main dishes
for Thanksgiving. I make dessert and then some tertiary. So
I usually make like three or four desserts. I do
a punch, I make homemade cranberry sauce, and then I
make homemade butters. I make like a vanilla cinnamon, and
I make like a rosemary roasted garlic butter to put
(15:40):
on like rolls and things like that. And our friends
do they do the supplementing. They bring in anything else
that we're missing. Where was I going with this?
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (15:50):
But I make a long list of desserts that I'm
considering making. I think my list was like thirty different desserts,
and I break it into like pies, cakes and trifles, fruit,
non fruity other and one of my others. And this
recipe has been on my list forever and maybe I
need to make it and share it with you. It's
a concord grape black black pepper and rosemary sorbet.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Oh, I would totally mess that up. Oh oh yeah, man,
I love have to try that.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
And I saw jam grapes at Whole Paycheck the other
day and I was like, I could make it. Jam
grapes and concord grapes are not the same, yeah, but
they're similar.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
It's like cut cotton candy grapes. Like, hey, would you
like to go to sugar shock?
Speaker 1 (16:34):
I mean, I love cotton candy grapes. I would not
want to turn that into a storbet. But my husband,
probably just for logistical reasons, was like, don't do that
for Thanksgiving. I would I would not consider that one.
So I took it off my list. But I will
make it and I will share it with you. Now'll
have to try a peanut butter and mayo sandwich because.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
You mean a banana and mayo sandwich.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Yeah, a banana and mayo sandwich. Because I do like sweet,
like sweet and savory together. I will do a peanut
butter and jelly and bacon, which is where I think
the peanut butter in my brain came from.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Well, well, you can also do peanut butter and banana,
which is you know, that's what Elvis loved, right, So
like you can do one of those. Honestly, what I
would suggest for anyone who is curious about it is,
first of all, you got to get Duke's mayo. I
cannot stress this enough. It has to be dukes. But
get yourself some Dukes mayo. Like cut like do like
a half sandwich. Like take one piece of bread, cut
(17:26):
it in half. Take take a banana, like half a banana,
slice it up, Put a little bit of mayo on
either side of the bread. Put the slices of banana
in there. That way, you only have a little half sandwich.
You take a bite if it's not to your liking,
like it might be one of those things where you
take a bite and you don't know if you like
(17:48):
it or not yet, and then you have to take
another bite and maybe another Like to this day, my
wife doesn't she doesn't say if she likes boiled peanuts.
She just says she can't stop eating them, but she
doesn't know if she likes them or not.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
So like boiled peanuts, but not out of a can.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Oh no, no, no, I'm talking no. If you're gonna
get boiled peanuts, you got to go up to North Georgia. Yeah,
it's ideal if you're heading northeast toward the Carolinas and
the roadside stand has a sign that says boiled peanuts
where it's spelled b O I L T and then
(18:26):
P dash nuts. And then it should be in a
big like maybe like an old disused oil can and
just sitting them over an open flame. And and there
needs to be enough salt in that sucker to make
the dead sea go. That's a bit much. And then
(18:48):
you can get yourself some boiled peanuts anyway. But yeah,
it may be one of those things where you take
a couple of bites and you can decide whether or
not it's working for you or it's not. And if
it's not, that's totally cool. Like it is. It is
a weird sensation, I will admit, like it's you know,
it's it gets a little it's a little gooey, you know,
depending on how ripe your banana is. But I do
(19:11):
still like them. And I introduced our friend Shaye to them,
and it quickly became like an obsession for her.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Oh wow, wow. Well there you go. If you guys
have your own favorite Thanksgiving recipes or weird recipes, or
if you try a banana and Mayo sandwich and you
like it, let us know. We'll tell you how to
reach out at the end of the show if you
don't already know. And along, I'm gonna move us along, Jonathan.
I'm so sorry cat you do it. But I wanted
(19:40):
to say thanks to os Killer on Discord for chiming
in on what they would like to see as a
TV or film turned into a musical. The suggestions were Deadpool,
which I think is great VSG That'll star Galactica, and
Friday the thirteenth and shark Nato else said Sharknado? Who
(20:01):
else said no? Was it? I don't remember anyhow.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Good suggestions though.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
Yeah, yeah, so those were the suggestions from listeners. Thank
you so much. I can see all of those immediately
as musical. So those are great choices.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Well, I mean, like yeah, because like Friday the thirteenth,
you could do and even depending on how you wanted
to do it, Like if you wanted to do a
Friday the thirteenth that was trying to actually be scary,
that's one thing. But my first instinct is to do
like Evil Dead the musical, where that's a very over
(20:36):
the top comedic musical. It's splatter house, but it's a
comedic musical. That's where I think Friday the thirteenth would
really shine.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm trying to find it. Now, give
me just a second.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
All right, Ariel's she is referencing our research department, which
is also Aeriel. So she's looking I can see it.
I see lights flashing on her face, meaning that she's
looking at different computer screens.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
I am it's it's like it's like watching that War
of the World's with ice Cube or.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Icy Yes, yes, yes, where he just sits at a
desk for like ninety percent of the film. Yeah, that
was the Amazon Prime one I recall.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Okay, Sharknado came on Instagram from a Bucks thirteen. So yes,
thank you guys for reaching out and telling us what
you'd love to see his musicals. I wanted to make
sure that we got their their do creative props for that.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
Yeah, yeah, gotta get their flowers. Well, let's let's talk
about stuff what we have watched since the last time.
It's gonna be a lot of familiar names because we're
watching more of the stuff that we had started. Well
in some cases with Ariel, like weeks ago, because she's
still got her task Master list in front of her.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
I mean to be fair, I am on Taskmaster Series one,
and then all I have to do is watch all
of the battles of the Champions and the New Years specials,
and then I can go to kids.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
You got to see the series that had the dude
who was featured in that commercial for Walmart or not?
What was it? Wasn't Tesco's Waitrose the Waitros commercial license you?
Speaker 1 (22:25):
Yeah, yeah, Joe Wilkerson, he was a delight. When you
get to Lake, I think, I don't remember what series
it starts, but the further back you go, the shorter
the series are. So they started with five episodes and
then they went to eight, and then now they're at
ten episodes a series. So he only got five episodes,
but I'm I'm delighting in it. One of my friends
(22:50):
wore me that series one has the actors get mad
at each other, and they do or the comedians slash actors.
But the one who gets the maddest that's like his step. Yeah,
and so like you just have to remember that and
you have to watch, like when they cut away to
like the wide shots, he is laughing with everybody else?
Speaker 2 (23:08):
So is that the same one where Greg at one
point takes one of them aside and it's like, why
are you doing why are you talking like this?
Speaker 1 (23:17):
No, but well, I don't know. I'm only in I've
only seen two episodes of series one so far. Greg
does that. He does that like not always, but occasionally
it's he's done it more than once.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Uh those are I always find those very fun and
like the audience always is in on it too. So
all right, so, task master, what else have you been watching?
Speaker 1 (23:38):
I watched the first episode of mighty nine, which is
the new series by Critical the new cartoon series by
Critical Role. It is more. There are three episodes out
right now, but my the episodes are longer. So the
first one was fifty minutes, and my watch party decided
it was too late to watch a second. I'm really
sad about that. In the first episode, they introduce three
(24:00):
of the main characters, primarily, and they're telling it in
a different order than they did the actual play, so
they're making it they're starting with like a session zero
where everybody meets, and they're making it more canonical. But
they didn't introduce my favorite character that I think is
the next episode, so it's very hard for me not
to watch ahead.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
Who is your favorite character? Jester Love Jester is my
favorite character.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Yeah, She's a She's a goofy, young teefling girl who's
really into mischief, oftentimes inappropriate, but it's she plays it
so well.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
A cleric who, the joke is in critical role that
she would never cast healing spells like she was. She
was like, which kind of makes me think of the
McElroy's too, because Daddy McElroy was kind of like that too.
You played a cleric who famously hardly ever cast any
(24:57):
healing spells, but you just.
Speaker 1 (24:58):
Had bad luck with spells in general.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
I actually saw an interview as one of those games
where they're asking like trivia questions of the cast to
see if they could remember, you know, details, and one
of them was how many times in the whole campaign
did Jester cast cure wounds? And the answer was much, much,
(25:25):
much higher than anyone anticipated. No one was, No one
got close. But it is somewhat of a silly reputation
for her character is that she's like a cleric who
just doesn't really see the need to cast cure wounds.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
I mean she's also strong, and there are lots of
other cool skills and you've got limited spell slots.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Yeah, and I got to you gotta make sure you
deserve some energy for more sending messages.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
Yeah. I really enjoyed episode one of mighty nine. It
is much more serious than episode one of Fox Makina.
I know mighty nine has a lot of humor in it.
The story is a little like can be a little
bit more serious at times, but I really enjoyed it.
(26:18):
I found out this week that there's a ce Sue too.
There was a movie movie called se Sue about I
think a finished farmer who fought Nazis, and there's a
second one out and I didn't know it existed until yesterday.
It just came out. I haven't watched that yet, but
I just wanted to mention that because we haven't mentioned
it Inertia.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Did you watch the first one.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Part of it? I need to go back and watch it.
I just didn't have time to finish it.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
It's super violent, but.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
I mean, I have a stick around my car that
says ce Sue. To be fair, I got it in
Michigan visiting my grandmother because Sisu is the finish word
for like grit. It's approximately, it's not. There's not a
direct translation steadfast, hardiness and grit. And then I'm continuing
up with Pluribus, which is the Vince Gilligan sci fi
(27:05):
show that we vaguely spoilered last week.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
No, I removed all the spoilers.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Okay, I like a spoiler warning at the time.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
No, no, I took it out. I edited to be
clear I was the one spoiling it. But I went
through and edited out. The discussion ended up being about
thirty percent as long as it was when our original recording.
So you watched the Grenade episode, the most recent Okay, yeah,
(27:36):
I also watched it. I am enjoying it. I a
little bits are frustrating me, but I have faith that
it will all be addressed. But the funny thing is
I decided to show Becca the first episode to see
(27:56):
if she would be interested in it, because I was like,
as I was watching, I was thinking, maybe I should
check in because this could be her thing too, and
it would be really crappy of me to just keep
watching it on my own. And she liked it. So
we watched the second episode, and then now we're watching
so she asked me this morning, She's like, is today
(28:17):
the day when the new Plurbus episode comes up? Like,
I'm like, yeah, nine o'clock. So I have a feeling
that that's going to be our our weekly watch thing together,
which we we don't typically do. We don't really watch
a lot of television together. So that's gonna be our thing.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
Anything else, No, but I do feel like episodes two
and three of Plurbus, it's not as it's not as
detrimental if you get spoilers for those you know, that
might change. I'm sure there are going to be episodes
where there's stuff that drops that it would be spoilery
and maybe ruin your journey, but you're going to still
(28:53):
just air on the side of caution. You'll have to
tell me offline though, since we both watched it, what
the things are that are bothered you?
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Okay? Well, for my part, the other things I watched
since the last time we recorded, uh, well, one I
listened to Once we Were Spacemen again. I think they're
up to episode three now, and I have recommended it
to Ariel so that when she has time she needs
to listen to Once We Were Spacemen because a couple things.
(29:21):
It's Nathan Fillian and Alan Tudic, and they are delightful.
They are very sincere in their praise and love for
each other and the craft that they each practice and
what they bring to their craft. It's it can get
a little a little like like congratulatory in those episodes,
(29:45):
but it's cute because it's two people who genuinely like
each other. You know, they're not blowing smoke. But the
other reason why I've recommended it to Ariel is because
they have a lot of talk about the industry and
specifically things that they found, you know, interesting or challenging.
And I think anyone who is either wanting to pursue
(30:06):
a career in acting or just as really interested in
the process would find get a lot out of that
podcast because it's not expressly about that, that's just where
their conversations go. And I find that it's really enlightening
and also helpful to hear how people who have seen
great success in their careers still encounter things that are challenging,
(30:33):
you know, and in some cases they talk about things
where they're like, yeah, I had a really bad audition.
It was my fault, and I chose to do this
and then later thought, they're going to be consequences to
that choice, and like they're not warning people off, but
at the same time, it's like it's almost like, just
(30:53):
be aware that your decisions have consequences, so that you
know when you make them you're mindful of That doesn't
mean change your decision, but just be aware that they're
going to be consequences. And I think that's really And
again they don't say any of this outright blatantly. That's
just the messaging I pick up and I think it's
really helpful, not just in acting obviously, but yeah, they're
(31:15):
realms as well.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
It is definitely on my list of things to watch.
I just oh yeah, I'm also watching Critical Role, The
Fall of the Aussy Thing and a Fang, and I'm
really behind on that, so it's on my list. It'll
be next in the queue.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
I also watched an improvised murder mystery that was modeled
after the K Pop Demon Hunters, except that they also
merge the K Pop Demon Hunters with the Golden Girls,
and I think the reason for that is because the
people performing didn't know enough about the K Pop Demon Hunters. Like,
as I'm watching, I'm like, uh, this is one of
those things where they had the idea but no one
(31:50):
actually took the time to watch the movie.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
Again, I don't know anything at all about having an
idea and not knowing enough to actually execute it. Nothing
at all from all of our mashups.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Yeah it was. It was cute though. It was an
entertaining night, and the audience really enjoyed it, so that's
what's most important. And then I also am caught up
on Welcome to Dairy, the IT prequel. It continues to
be the stupid thing that bothered me, continues to be stupid,
(32:24):
and it continues to bother me. But I think the
performances are really good, Like I think there are some
really really good actors in this. Some of their choices
tend to be a little more theatrical than I was anticipating,
like like a little bigger than what you would expect
from a television performance, Like the I acting gets to
(32:47):
be a little bigger by bye, I mean eyeball, Like
the way people are looking at each other and making expressions. Cool,
that was a big choice for a TV screen. But okay,
but yeah, the plot point that I think is stupid
continues to be stupid to me. Maybe not to everyone,
(33:09):
but to me, and it's still bothering me. I also
learned that apparently the showrunners are hoping to get renewed
for a second and potentially third season, with the idea
of being that each season would take place twenty seven
years before the last one, because that's how long the
(33:30):
cycle is for penny Wise to kind of go into
hibernation before emerging to feed again. So the next season
would be in the nineteen thirties, and then the season
after that would be in the late nineteen hundreds or
like nineteen oh eight, not late nineteen hundreds, the decade
of nineteen hundred. And I don't know how I feel
(33:53):
about that too, because again, like we already know how
this season will ultimately end because they can't kill penny Wise,
because Pennywise shows up an it like penny Wise is
going to show up two more times after this one,
so they can't kill him. So that you know that,
Really the question is how many of these characters are
(34:14):
going to survive. One of them, you know, will survive
if you pay attention, because he's the father of a
character from it, and he's a kid in this, so
he has to live.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
I just I feel like if they aren't hitting it
out of the park with this season, if it feels
a little too samey, samey, then I don't have much
hope for the other two seasons.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
Honestly, I think it's going to depend on two things. One,
how many people are watching, because even if it's not
hitting artistically, if tons of people are watching, that's enough justification.
But the other thing is beyond their control, which is
who the heck is gonna own Warner Brothers. But we'll
talk about that when we get the thirty seconds or less.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
Which, hey, unless you watch something else.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Nope, I'm good.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
We're there.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Okay, well let's start. First off, I learned from the
Hollywood Reporter that Neil H. Morritz, producer of the Fast
and Furious franchisees and talks with Paramount to produce a
live action teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise. Now, whether
this will be actors in suits or more like one
of those Disney Air quote live action films is unknown.
(35:28):
A different gritty R rated TMNT film has reportedly been shelved.
So my guess is whatever we do get, if we
get it, is going to be family friendly man.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
The best TMNT movies were the ones with people in suits.
They hold up agreed at least affects wise. Well, don't worry.
The Lububu movie apparently is not going to be in
quote unquote live action because Sony's animation division has taken
on the project. While they might still try to pass
(36:00):
it off as live action, but the animation division's doing it.
That is all we know about the movie. There's no
script writer attached. There's no script. It's just they're gonna
make it.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Me Well, back to the Hollywood Reporter, I read that
there's a growing bidding war brewing for our old pals,
Warner Brothers Discovery. This is why talking about a second ago. Now,
Remember the merger of Warner Brothers and Discovery only happened
three years ago in twenty twenty two. Now it looks
like players like Comcast, Paramount, and Netflix are in the
(36:33):
mix to become the new stewards of Warner Brothers. Reportedly,
only Paramount has made a bid for the whole kitten kaboodle,
whereas the other two suitors just want a piece here
or there.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Very interesting. I wonder what pieces I'll have to look
into that more. Uh, we got a first look at
Jimunji three, a movie that a movie series that Jonathan
hasn't watched since the nineties that I absolutely love this one.
Instead of being sucked into the game, the game characters
(37:05):
are being sucked into real life, much like the original.
It looks great. I'm looking forward to it so so much.
We're getting it. December eleventh, twenty twenty six. Happy birthday
to me.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Imax recently landed an exclusivity deal with Netflix that will
see the upcoming Narnia film from Greta Gerweg launch solely
on Imax screens for the first two weeks, and the
head of Europe's View Entertainment company isn't happy about it.
So iView owns several movie theaters in Europe, and CEO
Tim Richards argues that exclusivity deals will hurt the overall
(37:39):
cinema industry, which is already going through a little bit
of a rough patch.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
I wonder if that will affect Black Panther three, which
Ryan Kugler has confirmed is in the works and the
next movie he's making. However, that's all we know. You
don't know when it's coming out other than in phase
six post phase six of MCU, and.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Who even knows what's in phase six of this point? Well,
here's some comic book cinema whiplash. Earlier this week, Pierce
Brosnan said that Doctor Fate, whom he played in the
poorly received Black Adam film, was set to up here
in James Gunn's next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow. Whether
this was to be played by Brosnan or a different
actor wasn't known, but Brosden indicated he would at least
(38:27):
be interested too bad. Gun later shot down this rumor
on social media, saying he had no fate in store
for Doctor Fate.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
All I mean, I'm not super upset. Okay, we are
getting a new Sense and Sensibility movie, this time starring
Daisy Edgar Jones up the Aungenu of Season one of
Bridgerton and Esmi Creed Miles, who I'm not as familiar
with I looked up and forgotten. Sorry everybody. It is
coming out September eleventh, twenty twenty six, is being done
(39:00):
by Focused Features.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Well, I'm starting to feel badly for Glenn Powell. The
Running Man didn't sprint out of the Gate box office
wise and now His upcoming film with A twenty four
has been renamed and plopped into a late February release date.
It had been called Huntington, but now we'll be known
as How to Make a Killing. It is inspired by
a nineteen forty nine film titled Kind, Hearts and Coronets.
(39:26):
I wish I could talk more about this. I know
so much about it. Anyway. Could Hollywood be losing confidence
in mister Powell because I already did?
Speaker 1 (39:35):
I mean, I still want to see Running Man. It
did not get great critical reviews sixty seven percent, but
audience reviews is like eighty mid eighties, so that's not horrible.
I just haven't had time. We got the first look
at the characters from the new live action led Legend
of Zelda movie. I guess they looked like Lincoln Zelda.
(39:57):
The pictures aren't really exciting. It's just picture of two
pretty teenagers, young adults. I don't even know how old
they are. But it's filming in New Zealand and they
said they want to give it like a Miyazaki Prince,
this moment from mon AoE gay Field, and I'm for that.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
So yeah, I felt the pictures looked a little CW
honestly okay. In our penultimate story, an original copy of
Superman's first comic book appearance in Action Comics Number one,
sold an auction for a sum so large even Superman
would have trouble carrying it to the bank. Someone bought
(40:32):
the issue for nine point one two million dollars, which
handily broke the previous record also for Action Comics number one,
of six million bucks way back in the good old
days of twenty twenty four. And to think, when it
published in nineteen thirty nine, it sold for ten cents.
Speaker 1 (40:53):
Wowsa geez goodness, Okay, it deserved all three of those.
Has ordered a Stargate TV series. It is being helmed
by Martin Garo, who has worked on Stargate Atlantis, Stargate
SG one, and Stargate what was the other one, Stargate
(41:18):
Universe Stares Stargate Look. I would watch that occasionally. The
original Stargate TV show would do weird crossovers so like
they had the Farskape people on there. Once I have
been hit or miss on the Stargate TV shows. It
feels a little too CW Hollywood to me. But and
(41:39):
Stargate SG one or whatever, the later one was the
I don't remember anyhow, not Stargate SG one that was
a first. It was like Stargate Universe or something like that.
I mean, Atlantis was just dorky, but I watched it,
but Stargate Universe was the one that felt like a
little bit more like That'll Star glactic gritty, and then
(42:00):
like changed course after the first episode and lost my interest.
But I love the movie Stargate, and I love the
concept of Stargate, and I did even love the cheesy
TV shows even though they felt a little bit too
like Hollywood actor. So I am. I am very hopeful
for this series. You know, I love Fallout and I
(42:20):
love the critical role stuff, so I'm really hoping that
this one's another hit out of the park.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
I look forward to telling Beca about this. She was
a huge fan of the original TV series. I think
she liked the movie, but she really liked the original
TV series, so she might be excited to hear that
there's going to be a new one or maybe not.
It's hard to say with her. Sometimes I say thanks
to her and she's.
Speaker 1 (42:44):
Like, ah, I guess it depends on the day too.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Yeah, I guess. So I mean it kind of depends
on how our day's been going. That's that's totally fair. Well,
let's move into the segment we lovingly called Hey, how'd
that get in here?
Speaker 1 (43:00):
Yeah? And first, we got a trailer last week. We
missed it for The Devilwaar's Prada two.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
I want to be clear, I didn't miss it. I
just didn't put it into the lad taken it out
this week too, No, you want you had it in
here and I was like, you know, what if you
have something to say, but I want to keep it
in there.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
I don't really other than the fact that I feel
like the The Devilware's Prata one was fine. It was
a fine movie. A lot of people loved it. I
thought it was nothing to write home about. But it's
got an amazing cast. Uh. The fun thing about The
Devilwaars Prada too, is all of the social media stuff
that's been going on has been a lot more fun
than the trailer.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
Well, the trailers really more of a teaser that just
reintroduces us to Meryl, Streep and and Hathaway as their characters,
except now Hathaway is also a snooty, snooty elite elitist,
so yay. But I never watched the Devilware's product, so
I really shouldn't be casting any shape. The thing I'm
(44:01):
most aware of is that it was a film in
which Anne Hathaway and like Emily Blunt apparently just became
really fast friends.
Speaker 1 (44:12):
Yeah, and it's interesting so Emily but and Mark Strong
both played kind of assistance to Meryl Streep's character. I
almost said Glenn Close, but it's Meryl Streep and they
are in this new movie too, and I really like,
more than anything else, more than the storyline, I just
wonder what those two positions, those two actors' positions will
be in this movie.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Yeah, I I can't say that I'm super curious about it.
I also, if I sound weird, it's because I was
just doing the thing that Ariel usually does, which is
I'm checking the internet to make sure I was right
about Anne Hathaway and it wasn't like Anna Kendrick or something.
Speaker 1 (44:52):
Hathaway.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Yeah. It was one of those things where I'm like,
oh no, it's a pretty brunette actress, and I mixed
them all up.
Speaker 1 (45:00):
Oh no, pretty brunette actresses.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
That's listen. There are a lot of very talented, very
pretty brunette actresses, and sometimes I can't remember which ones
were in what? Like was Anna Kendrick or was it
Anne Hathaway who was in the one where it was
she was secretly in control of a giant Kaiju monster.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
That was Anne Hathaway.
Speaker 2 (45:22):
Okay, See which one was in the the a cappella
music one?
Speaker 1 (45:28):
That was Anna Kendrick. See.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
That's the thing is that if you put those movies
back to back and then asked me who was in what,
I still wouldn't be able to tell you.
Speaker 1 (45:35):
Anna Kendrick was in Scott Pilgrim. Oh right, she played Scott's.
Speaker 2 (45:41):
Sister, right, whereas Aubrey Plaza played the one who kept
having her her lines censored? Right, Yes, yeah, Okay, I'm
slowly I should know that because like, directly over my
head is a sign Scott Pilgrim movie poster. And that's
how bad a fan I am. All right, well, let's
(46:02):
talk about the next thing that's on our list of
stuff that. Oh well, I guess I should also mentioned
Devilware's Product Too is slated to launch on May first,
twenty twenty six. But uh, the next thing up is
a movie that's kind of about kind of about stand
up comedy, kind of about you know, trying to find
(46:22):
your way after a relationship has kind of run its course,
kind of like a midlife crisis thing. It stars Will
Arnett and it is titled is this Thing on It?
Speaker 1 (46:35):
Uh, it doesn't really fit in our show unless you're
just like man, I am massively geeky about stand up comedians.
It does have like Amy Sidaris and who I Love?
Speaker 2 (46:47):
Is that right?
Speaker 1 (46:48):
Does it have Amy Sidarius? No? Lord, yeah, it does
save Amy Sidarus.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
So also has Laura Dern.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
Yeah, it stars Laura Dern and Will Arnette's got Bradley Cooper,
It's got Sean Hayes, it's got Kieran Hines, Emily Blunt again,
Andrew Day. Just like a huge Peyton Manning of all things.
But it looks really cute. It's yeah, I don't know,
you've talked about it. It's a guy who's getting a
(47:16):
divorce and does stand up to work through it. And
I know so many friends who do stand up to
work through things, and so it feels very earnest, yeah,
and also very funny.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
Yeah. No, we're friends with people who do stand up comedy,
something that I don't think I could ever, do like
it's just not that's not a performance thing that's inside
of me. I should also mention this film is apparently
this is, according to Wikipedia, loosely based off a real
comedian named John Bishop who's from the UK. And the
(47:48):
movie comes out on December nineteenth, so it looks like
it's a very earnest film. I will be curious to
see what the reception is to this one.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
Yeah, me too. Last trailer for Stuff that Doesn't Fit.
I wasn't sure if we were going to put into
this into this lineup, but we did. It's for Downriver.
It looked like you were going to say something I'm sorry, John.
Speaker 2 (48:10):
Oh no, no no, Well you had recommended at one
point of possibly putting this into John Boy's horror hutch.
But I don't feel like this is really a horror
so much as like a crime thriller. I mean, and
that's being generous because the trailer itself is purposefully mysterious
in that it doesn't tell you any details about what's
(48:33):
going on. Clearly, there's a sheriff of like a rural
community investigating crime, attempting to stop someone from committing suicide
by jumping to their death off a bridge, and the
fact that the sheriff has a young son, and then
(48:56):
beyond that, you can't really see what is going on
the film other than the sheriff himself is struggling with
issues of mental health. I saw someone who had a
guess as to what the movie was really about, and
it was to the point where I'm like, I suspect
this dude has read the screenplay, because this is really specific.
(49:17):
These are some specific guesses this guy has, and maybe
he did just come by these guesses honestly, but I
have a feeling I have read what this movie's really about.
I don't know how I feel about it, Like, it
looks like it's pretty well made, but yeah, the fact
that the trailer is so purposefully vague makes it hard
(49:40):
to like really have a hook set in.
Speaker 1 (49:44):
I agree. I will say it does have a vague,
geeky like attachment, which is Bethany Anne Lynde is one
of the main actresses in it, and she was Robot
ma AND's daughter in Doom Patrol. She's a local Atlanta actor.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
Oh maybe that's why I thought she looked familiar in
this because there was a moment where I was like,
I don't know who this person is, but I swear
i've seen seen her before.
Speaker 1 (50:15):
I mean, she's done a lot more than Doom Patrol.
But that's like the geeky.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
Sure, this one comes out December ninth, on digital and
on demand, so I don't think it got theatrical distribution.
Then I guess that we can move on into John
Boy's horror Hutch. I'll make it relatively quick now. First
of all, again, Aerry All got to ask you you
watch Okay you did? Yes? Did you watch both of them?
Speaker 1 (50:39):
Yes? I'm interested in both of these movies.
Speaker 2 (50:41):
Okay, it's interesting. You can't you don't like cannibalism, but
you can. You can handle zombie movies.
Speaker 1 (50:49):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (50:50):
Interesting.
Speaker 1 (50:52):
I mean I still don't like zombies eating, like watching
zombies eat people, but I can handle it. And the
difference is here's the difference. Zombies are not real. Sure,
zombies are are a fictional monster. The things that always
bother me most in horror, sci fi, thriller stuff like
(51:13):
that are the things that real people could and sometimes do.
Speaker 2 (51:19):
Do.
Speaker 1 (51:20):
Disturbed people. Yeah, so cannibalism is a real thing that
real people can and do do, and that disturbs me.
Speaker 2 (51:29):
Got it? Yeah, it's you'll be thankful to hear it's
exceedingly rare. But then so's the food. But a boom.
Speaker 1 (51:39):
Hey, now, I don't know if you were joking all over.
Speaker 2 (51:43):
No, I was not joking about you being it is infrequent.
How about that exceedingly infrequent?
Speaker 1 (51:49):
I mean it is, but you know, it's the fear
of something that could actually happen, right.
Speaker 2 (51:52):
I got it, I got it. Yeah, No, that makes sense.
Like it's I can see that like one of the
subgenres of horror that I am not a huge fan of,
probably for similar reasons. If I were to really sit
down and analyze, it would be the home invasion subgenre,
because that's something that while it's unlikely you would ever
(52:14):
encounter anything remotely like you know, the strangers or funny
games or anything like that, the fact that home invasions
happen like they happen every day, like that's something that
would probably be a little more. It wouldn't strike me
as being entertaining, and it's why I tend to not
(52:36):
seek those out. Occasionally, I'll watch one, but it's not
my first choice.
Speaker 1 (52:40):
Well, the two also chemibalism horror movies, at least not
always but oftentimes are portrayed because I don't watch a
lot of them are portrayed in the bits that I
see as a person alive being tortured. Yeah yeah, yeah,
and so that hits two kind of X for sure.
Speaker 2 (52:58):
Yeah yeah, So you should never watch Green Inferno. You
should never watch Bone Tomahawk. Those are two movies I
have seen that you absolutely should not watch.
Speaker 1 (53:09):
They weren't on my list.
Speaker 2 (53:10):
So great. Bone Tomahawk is amazing. It's an amazing movie,
but it is brutal. Green Inferno is not an amazing movie,
but it is entertaining the probably the same reason.
Speaker 1 (53:25):
The closest I could do is Cannibal the musical, and
I haven't watched that in years. I like, I've watched that,
and I've watched Silence of the Lamps, and I enjoyed both,
and I probably and I've rewatched both. But I am
now in an era of my life, the non Cannibal era,
where I probably could not watch them again.
Speaker 2 (53:43):
Right, Well, the sky is blue and all the leaves
are grass. My heart's as full as a baked.
Speaker 1 (53:49):
As a baked potato.
Speaker 2 (53:50):
Yes, well, let's let's talk about the horror hutch. We
got two in trees, and we've talked about one of
them already once before, which is we Bury the Dead.
We got a full trailer for this. This is the
one that has Daisy Ridley playing the protagonist. It is
set in a world where there has been a zombie outbreak,
(54:12):
but initially authorities are reassuring everyone that the reanimated dead
are docile, that they are harmless. However, as time goes on,
it turns out this is not the case, and then
you've got this element of is the government purposefully withholding
information in order to avoid a panic? You know? How
(54:33):
much do they know? Are they aware that these zombies
in fact do get violent over time. Meanwhile, the other
part of the story is that Daisy Ridley's character, her
husband was in the region where the zombie outbreak first occurred.
That's now kind of a no man's zone. You're not
supposed to go in there. So she volunteers for essentially
(54:57):
burial duty so that she can go into the zone
and look for her husband or look for what happened
to him. So those are the kind of the things
that are coming together in the storyline. What did you
think of the trailer?
Speaker 1 (55:11):
I thought it was really good. I thought it showed
a lot more of like the sci fi horror aspect
than the Tasers that we got. It kind of feels
like to me, like the spiritual sequel to twenty eight
Days Later, not the twenty eight entire franchise, but twenty
eight Days Later, but better production value because it's made
(55:33):
now with like a little taste of annihilation. And that's
just because an annihilation a woman goes into an unknown
phenomenon to find her husband, and the government or ruling
entity over that phenomenon is being real shady about what's
actually going on in there. So but it looks really
interesting to me.
Speaker 2 (55:54):
I agree. I thought that this is it's a well
made trailer. It looks like a pretty It's tough to
make a zombie film that kind of stands out just
because that whole trope has been so heavily played over
the last like two decades. Like you know, there's just
there was just such a glut of zombie material for
(56:14):
a long time that you really need to find a
way to stand out. This does a pretty good job
of it. And I would like to see Daisy Ridley
in something that's not Star Wars, and I haven't sought
out her other works, so maybe I'll check this out.
It comes out January second, in limited theatrical release, so
there's no guarantee that it'll be in the theater near you,
(56:35):
but you know, keep your eyes out.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
I might, I might try to go see this one.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
Cool. Well, let me know if you do, because maybe
we'll maybe we'll go check it out. We also got
a trailer to return to Silent Hill. This is a
film adaptation of essentially Silent Hill too, more or less
or at least inspired by Silent Hill two. The same
director did a Silent Hill move like twenty years ago,
(57:01):
like in two thousand and six or something, which I
have not seen, so I cannot comment on that. Also,
I want to say I am not like I haven't
really played any of the games. I tried to, but
you know those games are they're rough to play by
modern standards, like things like you know, tank controls and stuff.
(57:22):
It's kind of like this in the old Resident Evil games.
But yeah, I I I don't I've got thoughts about
this trailer. What'd you think? First?
Speaker 1 (57:32):
Aiel, So, I'm not familiar with a lot of Silent Hill.
I've seen some trailers and then I've seen, like the
trailer for Silent Hill F. I didn't realize that the
the kind of the over overgrowing fungus that happens in
Silent Hill F it happens in the actual Silent Hill.
(57:54):
I haven't paid a lot of attention to it. I
think it looks visually very good. I think it looks scary.
But honestly, the thing that hit me the most was
I need to go and read what happened in that
town that causes these different mutations and things and weird things,
(58:14):
because I don't actually know, and I am curious now.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Well, I feel like I feel like a lot of
Japanese horror rests on them just not explaining stuff in
some cases, like they just like that's not important, and
so they just don't do it right, which is sort
of opposite how Western storytelling tends to be. And it's
one of the reasons why I often get tripped up
(58:40):
with Japanese storytelling, because I've been so indoctrinated in the
Western style that I can find it frustrating to try
and consume a Japanese story. That's not to say that
the stories are bad, just that you know, my brain's
been wired a certain way. When I encounter stuff that
(59:00):
doesn't go along that way, it's it's challenging to me.
I actually, so the first time I watched this, it
must have been the screen or something, because at first
I couldn't tell if this was gonna be live action
or like CG. MH.
Speaker 1 (59:15):
Well, like, obviously some of it's gonna have to be CG.
Speaker 2 (59:19):
Yeah, but I mean, like the lead, the lead protagonist.
When I first saw it, it to me looked like
kind of like Avatar, where you're like, I think that's
just a CG character, not an actual human being. Like
there was stuff that felt like it was CG, maybe
even stuff that was AI generated. I don't know for
sure that that's the case. It just felt that way
(59:41):
to me, so I didn't it didn't strike me. I didn't.
I didn't find it as visually interesting. But then I
did try and watch it again earlier today and was
on a different computer, and it looked much better on
that computer than it did the first time I watched it.
So it may have just been that I was watching
it on a crappy screen and that was the problem.
(01:00:02):
Not that the movie itself reflected anything issue with an issue,
but well.
Speaker 1 (01:00:07):
And I know that you're sensitive to resolutions and frame
rates in general.
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
So yeah, but you know, if you are a silent
Hill fan, you should at least check out the trailer
to see if this is something that's interesting to you.
It did not win me over, but I am not
a Silent Hill fan, so you know I'm not the
right audience for this. Anyway. It comes out January twenty third,
so you got a little time before the movie is
(01:00:32):
actually out and available, So go check out that trailer
if you're a big silent Hill fan. Let us know,
by the way, if you're a big silent Hill fan,
what your your impressions of the trailer were, because for
all I know, this could be something where people are like, oh,
this is the adaptation I've been waiting for, although a
lot of the stuff I've seen recently is like some
of the stuff they've changed people. Anytime you change anything,
(01:00:53):
people have issues with it.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Yeah, but we're interested to hear your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
Absolutely. Yeah, they're valid either way, Like if you think
it's great that I want to hear, or if you're like,
I have real problems and if you can articulate why,
that would be great.
Speaker 1 (01:01:09):
Well, you know we've we've talked about horror, but we
still have to talk about the horror of quote unquote
live action a little bit more.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
So that brings us I think I'm sensing what your
reaction is to our first item.
Speaker 1 (01:01:23):
Yes, so that brings us to our first item in
our actual show notes, which is we got a teaser
for the live action live action Maana. Now I will
say up front it is better than saying it's a
live action Lion King or a live action Lady and
the Tramp, because there are actual actors in this.
Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
But there's a lot of CG on here. Yeah, it's
another one where it's like is that actually a person
or is that a CG version of a person? Like yeah,
some of which I was like that it's gotta be CG.
Or if it's not CG, they filtered the heck out
of that shot, right, Okay. So I don't want to
(01:02:10):
cast dispersions on anyone for their performance, for the work
that they have done. There's clearly a ton of work
that has gone into this. But I did not like
the arrangement of the song at all. Maybe that's just
because I like the original so much that deviating from
(01:02:32):
that just doesn't work for me. Yeah, I, And I'm
still of the opinion that I don't like it adaptations
like the animated to live action adaptations in general because
I feel like they're kind of creatively bankrupt.
Speaker 1 (01:02:52):
Yeah yeah, I also like so in the live action
Little Mermaid that they did recently, which there were parts
of it I absolutely loved, Like overall, I enjoyed watching
it because they added a whole Rogers and Hammer Signs
section to it that was amazing that I loved it
(01:03:14):
was it made the story better. I loved it. A
lot of the underwater stuff wasn't as spectacular, the songs
weren't as great, and all that. In that they decided
to try to make the CGI animals look like real
animals in this for Hey Hey, at least they did
(01:03:35):
not try to make it like it look like a
real rooster. They tried to make hey Hey look like
the cartoon rooster, and I didn't at least I didn't
catch a real person and that rooster interacting together. And
I don't know how it's gonna work.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
Yeah, I uh, I I am not a fan of
I already said this, I'm not a fan of that.
I think everyone who's working on this is doing great work.
I just wish that it was on something else. I
(01:04:10):
do like the fact that people of the Polynesian cultures
are getting to tell stories that are relevant to their
culture that I think is great. I wish it could
be something other than a retelling of Malwana, simply because
we already have Milana and we didn't even.
Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Well, I was gonna say, we didn't get Malana that
long ago.
Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
But I guess it, like, it doesn't feel like it
was that long ago.
Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
It doesn't feel like it was that long ago.
Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
Like it's not like therenow White, Like snow White they
waited they waited like more than ninety years or something.
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
Yeah, and the Little Mermaid they waited like thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:04:46):
So yeah, a little over. So maybe we'll get in
Kanto next, a live action in Kanto.
Speaker 1 (01:04:51):
I mean, I mean Molana wasn't that long ago. It
was twenty sixteen. Yeah, Like when you're looking in the
span in the span of like movies that is still
a fairly recent movie.
Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Yeah, because usually you're thinking, let's aim, let's do a
live action adaptation of a movie that people who have
kids now they were kids when the original movie came
out twenty sixteen, is a little on the early side
for that.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
Yeah, I mean I feel like the earliest you should
be doing a remake of a movie is ten years,
and that's the earliest.
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
Yeah. No, I feel the same, although I guess this
is technically ten years because yeah, but I still.
Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
Feel like it's a little too early. Like I still
feel it's a.
Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
Little too early. This comes out July tenth, and you know, again,
this was a first look. It may be that, you know,
maybe we'll get a trailer where it'll have a brand
new song by Lynn Manuel Miranda that just like recaptures
our excitement. I don't want to dismiss this totally. I
can't say that it's bad. I haven't seen it, and
(01:05:52):
even if I did see it and I didn't like it,
that's different from it being bad. I just have a
lot of prejudices, a lot of bias. Sees that the
film will have to overcome or I'll have to be
a better person, And we already know that second one's
not happening.
Speaker 1 (01:06:07):
So stop dissing my friend. You're a good person. You
have a very big heart. I do like the story
of Mawana. I liked the cartoon, and not even the
music that much. I just liked the story. It was fun.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
I also love the ocean, so I mean I I
think Tomatoa's song is one of my favorite Disney villain
songs of all times. Shy, Yeah, Shiny is a great song.
Speaker 1 (01:06:33):
You're also a huge Jamaine Clement fan.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
That's also true. That is also true. I love Jamaine
Clement's humor and work, and I love Fly of the
Concords and what we do in the Shadows. And yeah,
so he was true in.
Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Legion.
Speaker 2 (01:06:51):
Interesting, I didn't even know he was in Legion. Uh,
all right, Well then next up, we've got another trailer
for Project Hail Mary. This is the film adaptation of
the Andy Weir novel that came out just I think
in twenty twenty one. This trailer has some things that
(01:07:12):
you might consider to be spoilerish in them, because they
tell you what the whole second half of the movie is.
Speaker 1 (01:07:18):
Like. Yeah, so the first trailer just told us, really
that a guy is trying to save Earth and he
goes out into space.
Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
Yeah, especially stars are dying. This microbiologist, for some reason,
is picked to be part of a mission to reverse
this dying star issue, and then despite his protestations, he's
sent up to go take care of this issue. This
(01:07:50):
trailer has way more in it.
Speaker 1 (01:07:52):
Yeah, yeah, which for everybody I found out this trailer
had more in it when my friend said, oh, I
wish this trailer hadn't spoiled these things for me, I
would have liked to have gone into it blind, like
I did with The Martian, because that friend hadn't read
either book, yeah, both being by the same author. I
had looked up spoilers when the first trailer came out
(01:08:14):
because I had a friend talk about it and I
was curious what he was alluding to without spoiling it.
So it wasn't spoiled for me. But it looks good
and it looks fun, and I still want to see
this movie. I'm not going to talk about what's in
the second trailer. If you don't mind spoilers, or if
you've read the book, you should watch the trailer.
Speaker 2 (01:08:34):
Yeah, I would just say you if the teaser, If
you saw the teaser and that was interesting to you,
just avoid trailers from here on out and just wait
till the movie. The movie comes out March twentieth, so
you're going to be waiting a while, but wait to
see the film. I mean, even the earlier trailer did
(01:08:54):
reveal that he encounters alien life that trailer, so you
do know that that happens if you watch that first trailer.
If you didn't know, and you haven't watched any trailers, well,
I don't know how you would know you'd want to
see this, but but I will say, like, there's way
a lot of the mystery of that alien life is
(01:09:17):
kind of peeled away in the second trailer, and I
do think that robs you of some of the joy
of discovery. So I would recommend just going in blind
or or more blind than not, if you think this
film sounds interesting to you.
Speaker 1 (01:09:31):
Yeah. Next, we got a trailer for The Hunger Guy Games.
Sunrise on the Reaping.
Speaker 2 (01:09:38):
Yeah, Sunrise on the Reaping makes me happy.
Speaker 1 (01:09:45):
There's a bright golden haze on the reaping.
Speaker 2 (01:09:49):
It's the Reaping with the fringe on top. Yeah. So
this is a prequel, Okay, it's I want to say
that this is telling the story of the Hunger Games
where Woody Harrelson's character from the main series was a competitor.
So it's when he was a kid, a teenager. I
(01:10:12):
want to say that's the case. I could be totally wrong,
as I have not read the books nor seen the films, but.
Speaker 1 (01:10:19):
I please go no, you go ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
I was just saying I believe that's the case. I
think it's the story of the Hunger Games where he
was a participant.
Speaker 1 (01:10:31):
Gotcha, that sounds familiar. I know that they've talked about
this for a while. The trailer just came out like
to the point where like, when I saw the trailer,
I'm like, is this old news? It's not. I have
watched like the first two or three Hunger Games annoyingly,
and I love my husband. I'm not actually mad at him,
(01:10:52):
but like I was like, you like enders game. You
should watch Hunger Games, Tony, you would like it. And
then on a lone he was like, huh, someone told
me I should watch this and you watched it without me,
And I'm like, I've been trying to get you to
watch these movies forever, dork, But no, it's fine because
I've watched them and you've watched them, and now I
know your opinion, which I thought you'd like them, so
I'm glad you watch them and it's all fun. I'm
(01:11:12):
not actually mad. He watched them at a time I
wasn't available anyhow, so I sent him this because he
might like it. It looks pretty Honestly, I I didn't
remember enough about it to know it was a prequel,
which makes it a little sad because like, these games
are going to be different, and I'm like, well, obviously
they're not, because we still get to the Hunger Games
if it is a prequel.
Speaker 2 (01:11:34):
Yeah, I think. I think the difference is that I
think there's like twice as many competitors in this particular
Hunger Games, like it was like the from what I
understand in the mythology of the Hunger Games world, like
at certain on certain time stamps, like at certain decades
or whatever, they have a Hunger Games that is bigger
(01:12:00):
or has some element to it that isn't in their
normal Hunger Games at event. But I'm talking out of
my butt here because again I haven't read the books
or seen the movies. I also don't understand why do
a prequel for this, because again, like you said, Ariel,
(01:12:21):
we already know where everything's going because the other series
takes place after this, so you know this isn't going
to be the end of the games or anything like that.
I guess it gives you more information about one of
the characters and explains why he is the way he is.
Speaker 1 (01:12:35):
But.
Speaker 2 (01:12:38):
I don't know. To me, this becomes a thing of
It's the same issue I have with Welcome to Darry,
which is that it becomes a thing where it's like, yeah,
we can keep going back in time again and again
and again to do to mine this material for more
stories to tell, but then it just becomes here's another
story of people being forced into a miserable situation, and
(01:13:00):
you know that whatever resolution there's going to be won't
be completely satisfying because you already know what comes next.
Speaker 1 (01:13:06):
I also wonder because so you are correct looking at
because I wanted to look at the cast list, because
the cast list of this prequel is amazing. It's got
so many wonderful younger and older actors. It doesn't have
Philip Seymour Hoffman because he passed away, so Jesse Jesse
Plemmons is taking his place. But you're right, it is.
(01:13:30):
It is following Woody Harrelson's character, you know. So maybe
maybe the difference is these kids were alone and after
their thing. Now they have they get to have these
sponsors who kind of helped them fruit through, like f
you Trinkett in Hey Match, Abernathy, I mean, got the
last name right. The funniest thing to me is that
Glenn Close plays a character in this who is almost
(01:13:53):
unrecognizable as Glenn Close. Yeah, because they give her such
a look of play surgery.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
And they wheel her out like Hannibal Lecter.
Speaker 1 (01:14:04):
She looks like So, I know you didn't watch a
lot of Doctor Who. Did you watch the episode with Cassandra?
Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
Are you talking about the face that's stretched across the.
Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
Yes, moisturize me. Yes, she looks like that to me.
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
Yeah, I have seen that that. That is one of
the other things I'll be having a nightmare about later tonight.
So we've got a whole list.
Speaker 1 (01:14:27):
This.
Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
By the way, this movie doesn't come out until November
twentieth of next year, so like it is almost a
full year till this movie comes out. I just want
to point out it is unusual for us to talk
about trailers that are that far out. To me, like
the stuff that we tend to watch, it's the stuff
that's having the Internet, and you're usually looking at a
one to maybe three month spanh So for something to
(01:14:51):
be that far out. I'm like, oh, man, I can't
remember the last time I ran into a trailer for
a movie that's like a year away from releasing.
Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
It is interesting because you want to tell You want
to tell people about a movie so they can get
excited about it, but you don't want to release too
much too soon, because then it's not going to stay
fresh in their minds. Yeah, or if it is, it's
because you're releasing way too much about it as time
goes on.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
So I am looking forward to the Hunger Games themed
float during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year.
Speaker 1 (01:15:20):
You know, if they pull it off, that would be great.
The next trailer we got, I don't know if they're
pulling off the story they're trying to tell. It's for
a movie called Starbright with John Rice Davies Reece Davies,
John Reece Davies, John Reece Davies, Sorry, sir, and it's
(01:15:42):
I can't I can't even tell you what it's about
because it feels so disjointed to me.
Speaker 2 (01:15:47):
Yeah, I had to look up more information about what
this movie is actually about because the trailer I couldn't tell.
But when I looked it up. The impression I got is, oh,
this is like disney Wish, except it's not as fanciful.
It's not set in like a fairy tale setting, but
it's the idea of this fallen star that possesses power,
(01:16:10):
and so there's a young woman who comes across the star,
and there are other forces that want to get hold
of the star for various reasons, and that sets off
an adventure. I'm like, oh, that's like Disney's Wish, except
this is not animated or nearly as whimsical.
Speaker 1 (01:16:32):
Yeah. Yeah, so half of it's got this fantasy. There's
sword fighting, but there's also like people escaping from jail
with guns, and why would you bring a sword to
a gunfight?
Speaker 2 (01:16:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
I mean it might be a great story about healing
and moving on and moving past trauma, and that would
be wonderful. The trailer just feels so all over the
place to me.
Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
It does, I agree, comes out January ninth. I'm glad
to see something that's set in sort of a a
fantasy setting that is not an immediately recognizable IP adaptation.
I mean, maybe this is I don't know, maybe this
existed in some other format, but it does bear some
(01:17:13):
similarities to other stuff we've seen, so that part's unfortunate.
I found this trailer kind of muddled as well. Like
the only reason I can talk at all about what's
going on is because I went beyond the trailer and
looked it up.
Speaker 1 (01:17:29):
Yeah, I mean, I hope it's good. I like John
Rays Davies, nice person.
Speaker 2 (01:17:34):
Got to act with him once that was great.
Speaker 1 (01:17:36):
Yeah, yeah, he does seem he seems very nice the
times that I've interacted with him as well. He was
also a very stand up fellow. The next trailer we
have is for the Pendragon Dragon. Ooh, Ariel speak sentences.
This is this episode's a little bit long, so we're
gonna speed up a little bit. But for the pen
(01:17:56):
Dragon cycle.
Speaker 2 (01:17:57):
Rise of the of the Merlin. Yeah, of the Merlin,
not Rise of Merlin. No, the Merlin like Merlin in
this case, is being used as both the name and.
Speaker 1 (01:18:09):
A title, gotcha, which is essentially Merlin versus the Vikings.
Speaker 2 (01:18:20):
So okay, So it looks like if you, first of all,
here's an odd thing. This is on Daily Wire, which
is not something I was really familiar with for fiction.
Daily Wire I think of as a conservative leaning to
put it lightly, television channel network like a right leaning network,
(01:18:43):
but they have gotten into some other like fiction content creation.
And this series will be on Daily Wire Plus starting
on January twenty second, although if you're an All Access
member you'll be able to watch the first two episodes
on Christmas Day. If you're familiar with the Arthur and
(01:19:04):
legend and you talk to anyone who is a historian,
like real historians will say like, no, there's not a
King Arthur. But if you were to talk about King Arthur,
you're talking about an era that's likely right after the
Romans leave, and so the Empire of Rome is in ruins.
(01:19:25):
Romans withdraw from northern Europe. The what would become England
is ruled by a bunch of different regional kings, like
they have smaller kingdoms like you know, Essex and Sussex
and things like that, Westmoreland, all that kind of stuff,
(01:19:46):
and you have the Britons who live there. But then
the Saxons are invading, and the idea is that King
Arthur is the king who unites all the other kings
to defend against the Saxons. Spoiler alert, The Saxons end
up end up populating England, so it doesn't really work.
(01:20:08):
But anyway, this I feel like the series, and I
haven't read the books that this is based off of,
I feel like the series is building upon that concept,
the idea of Arthur uniting Briton's to stand against a
Saxon invasion. And in this case, it's not Arthur, it's Merlin,
It's It's The next book in the cycle would be
(01:20:31):
dealing with more Arthurian stuff, but this deals specifically with
with Merlin and his legend.
Speaker 1 (01:20:38):
Interesting. So do you think it looks good?
Speaker 2 (01:20:41):
Uh? I think you know what, I don't think it
looks bad. Which I'm not gonna get political here, but
I am not a right leaning person, so like I like,
my first instinct to see something that's produced by the
Daily Wire is to be biased against it, But I
don't think it looks bad. I'm not sure if I
(01:21:04):
would want to watch it, but I thought it looks
like it's fairly competently made, and when I think about
other Merlin stories I've seen like, it's at least as good,
if not better than some of the other ones. Like
I don't know if you did you ever watch the
Merlin mini series that had Sam Neil.
Speaker 1 (01:21:26):
I was about to say that is the one that
sticks out in my head the very most of all time,
because I loved Arthur. Like, I'm not a historian like you,
but I loved watching Athurian legend stories. Like my favorite
book reading like as a kid was one of my
favorite books that my mom read to me was a
Connecticut Yankee and King Arthur's Court. So, like, I like
(01:21:49):
the whole Arthur story and I loved the Sam Neil
mini series. This kind of gave me vibes of that.
Speaker 2 (01:21:55):
Yeah, this one is less like the Sam Neil one
gets pretty cheesy, Like there's some cheesy stuff in that.
I mean, you had Martin Short playing a character in
the Merlin miniseries.
Speaker 1 (01:22:05):
Yeah, he's like Morgana's like Henchman, don't.
Speaker 2 (01:22:08):
He's Yeah, he's like this little like a well ends
up being like almost like impish. But the this looks
grounded isn't the right word because there's still very much
kind of a sorcery sort of element going on here,
but maybe a little grittier, well a lot grittier than
(01:22:29):
the Merlin mini series was. So again, if you're into
Arthurian Legend, you should check out the trailer or see
what you think. Uh, yeah, I have my own reservations
for multiple reasons, but I don't want to. I don't
want to influence anybody just because I have issues with
Daily Wire.
Speaker 1 (01:22:49):
Now I want to go back and watch the Merlin
mini series again.
Speaker 2 (01:22:51):
Geez, I wish it had been better. I didn't think
it was bad. I just wish it had been better.
Speaker 1 (01:22:59):
I loved it it the time, but I was pretty young.
I think when it came out. I don't remember exactly when.
Speaker 2 (01:23:07):
But was that for I think it was for like
NBC or something like that. It was like a broadcast one.
I was like fifteen when it came out, so so
like like six years ago.
Speaker 1 (01:23:21):
Oh thank you, Yes, only six years ago. So I
really enjoyed it the time. But I also loved Tenth
Kingdom so and I know that when I rewatched that
that is also very cheesy.
Speaker 2 (01:23:30):
So you know who also really loves Tenth Kingdom, like
really loves a friend of the show.
Speaker 1 (01:23:36):
It's so problematic, but I love it so much.
Speaker 2 (01:23:40):
Yeah. No, the more you watch the wolf stuff, the
more you're.
Speaker 1 (01:23:43):
Like, oh, this was off a time yet, and yet
that character caused so many people's awakening.
Speaker 2 (01:23:52):
Saying sure, We've already talked about bo Peep, so I'm
not going to talk about my own awakening. All right. Well,
next up, we got a trailer for season two of
tomb Raider. The Legend of Laura Croft, an animated series
that's on Netflix. The season two starts on December eleventh.
(01:24:15):
I'll say this, the trailer looks very Lara Crofty. It's
craft being craft while lots of like Indiana Jones level
mystical stuff is going on, mostly in explosion form.
Speaker 1 (01:24:29):
Yeah, there's some time tongue in cheek comedy, so it's
not quite as serious as a lot of the other
tomb Raider stuff I've seen, But it's not as tongue
in cheeky as Harley Quinn.
Speaker 2 (01:24:39):
I'd say, oh yeah, not nowhere close, nowhere near.
Speaker 1 (01:24:42):
It looks cute, it looks fine. Yeah, I forgot there
was a season one.
Speaker 2 (01:24:47):
Uh. I forgot how deep into like mystical stuff tomb
Raider can get because the last tomb Raider game I
played was one of the reboot ones where it feels,
in general, it feels like it's in a more grounded world.
I say that while also realizing that the amount of
(01:25:08):
physical abuse Laura Croft endures by falling down multiple mountains
and sliding for like five minutes at a time, means
that she would yeah, no, she would be a pulp
like she would not be a human being at the
end of that game, based upon the amount of physical
punishment she takes. But but there's not like a lot
(01:25:30):
of you know, Raiders Lost Art kind of mysticism stuff
happening in that game that I can remember. I might
be forgetting a huge part of that game, but this,
like the mystical stuff is a huge part of what
takes you know, front and center frame in the in
the series. So if that's your thing, check that out.
That's coming to Netflix December eleventh.
Speaker 1 (01:25:52):
Yeah. Next is for something that could have maybe almost
gone into the horror hutch. It's a trailer for Night Patrol,
which is Hops versus Vampires.
Speaker 2 (01:26:01):
Which I did not know when I started watching this trailer.
Like when I started watching the trailer, I thought it
was just gonna be a cop drama. Like I thought
it was gonna be a cop drama slash thriller with
Justin Long in it, and I was ready to put
it in the does not fit section, and it wasn't
until about halfway through the trailer where I was like,
wait a minute, I think that there's a vampire.
Speaker 1 (01:26:26):
Yeah, it's kind of like the I had mentioned an
older movie a few episodes back called night Watch because
we were getting another movie by that director. I just
shared the trailer with Jonathan. He's, oh, yeah, I remember
that vaguely. So when I saw A night Patrol, I'm like,
is this a remaking of night Watch? It's not, but
it's also not too far off. It's also not too
(01:26:49):
too far off from Blade, but I like, justin.
Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
Long a lot it does. It does feel like I'm
again I hate to keep using the word grounded, but
it does feel like a more grounded vampire movie. It's
not like it's not as over the top with its action,
at least in the trailer anyway, as something like a Blade.
It looks like it's more like if you were to
expect more of a cop movie kind of thing, kind
(01:27:12):
of in those realms, like to the point where at
first I was wondering if they had encountered like almost
like a cult of people who believe themselves to be vampires,
but that vampires are not actually real in that universe.
It was more like people who had kind of adopted
the identity of vampireires and were wearing like like dental
(01:27:34):
implants or whatever. To you know, that's almost what it
felt like to me. And then the more I watched it,
the more like, No, I think they're actually supposed to
be vampires.
Speaker 1 (01:27:43):
Yeah, I mean I think it looks fun. So when
you say cop drama, you know that doesn't always sound fun.
Although there are definitely.
Speaker 2 (01:27:51):
Yeah, more of the thrillers like crime thriller or would
probably be more accurate, but.
Speaker 1 (01:27:56):
It also doesn't look like just a complete horrific It's
got some fun moments in the trailer. I actually very
much want to watch this one.
Speaker 2 (01:28:05):
Yep. This one comes out January sixteenth, and it does
look interesting, so yeah, kind of kind of. I'm hopeful
that it turns out to be a really entertaining movie
and not just like, oh, we just put the best
parts in the trailer. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:28:18):
Yeah, Next, we finally got well, I guess we got
a second trailer. We got a trailer for Wake Up
dead Man. Second one. Like I said, man, I am
losing my ability to speak. It's good, we're almost through.
Uh yeah, it tells us a lot more of the plot.
Speaker 2 (01:28:34):
Yeah, but that's okay because it comes out November twenty sixth,
so like just a few days from now.
Speaker 1 (01:28:38):
Yeah, it looks fun. It looks fun.
Speaker 2 (01:28:43):
It it is.
Speaker 1 (01:28:45):
The cast is so good, The cast is so good.
It looks like it's going back closer to the first one,
where it's a little bit more grounded, because the second
one was a little cartoonish. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:28:56):
Yeah, all the characters in the second one like the
first one. And you know, obviously even in the first film,
everybody is sort of a caricature or at least a
character archetype that's been dialed up a bit, right, Like,
no one apart from maybe the protagonist the maid, felt
like a real human being. They all maybe Chris Evans.
(01:29:18):
Actually Chris Evans' character felt kind of human too, But
everyone sort of felt like, hey, let's take this one
feature that a person might have and make that their
dominant personality. To break that up. But but I would
say that the second movie was even was that times
like ten, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:29:36):
This movie probably still has some of that, but like
I said, it feels it feels a little bit more plausible.
Speaker 2 (01:29:43):
Yeah, I guess it's also about Andrew Scott and he
looks he looks like he's having the time of his
life and I cannot wait.
Speaker 1 (01:29:49):
It also has Thomas Hayden Church in it, who every
time I see him, I'm like, is that the son
of James Varney?
Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
Yeah, I could say ernest think of him from Wings.
Speaker 1 (01:30:03):
I don't remember Wings. I mean, like I remember Wings,
but I don't remember like any of the story.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
Yeah, the Good Old. If you ever, if you ever
want to watch cheesy nineties sitcom material.
Speaker 1 (01:30:15):
Can I say James Varney, It's Jim Varney.
Speaker 2 (01:30:17):
Well, you know James James formally for being really formal. Yeah.
I I am really hopeful. Like I like the first
Knives Out a lot. I was entertained by the second one,
but never felt the need to rewatch it. I'm really
(01:30:37):
hopeful that the third one kind of is more similar
to the first than the second. I don't know, there
was something, but there were several things about the second
one that just, uh, I felt were a little cheap
as far as you know, preserving the mystery for the
audience that I didn't really care for. Like it almost
(01:31:04):
felt like someone is patting themselves on the back for
being so clever, and that got under my skin a
little bit. That again, probably just me. It's probably me
being a stooty snooth head.
Speaker 1 (01:31:18):
No, no, not at all. It wasn't as good as
the problem is. The first one was so good.
Speaker 2 (01:31:24):
Yeah, and all three of the films have had phenomenal
and fun actors in it. So although I really wish
that instead of Ed Norton in the second one they
got Sam Rockwell, that would have been more fun for me.
Speaker 1 (01:31:42):
That would have been fun. Speaking of phenomenal actors. Yeah,
our final trailer is for starring Dick van Dyke. It's
a documentary about Dick van Dyke, who turns one hundred
on my birthday this year.
Speaker 2 (01:32:00):
Yeah. This is from American Masters PBS. So just quick
shout out to PBS because between Twelfth Night and.
Speaker 1 (01:32:09):
This, Oh I did watch Twelfth Night so good, so good, god,
Oh my gosh, you watched it?
Speaker 2 (01:32:14):
Yeah, yeah, okay, Yeah. Peter Dinklige was simultaneously the funniest
and most heartbreaking Malvolio I think I've ever seen.
Speaker 1 (01:32:24):
Yeah, do you?
Speaker 2 (01:32:24):
I mean?
Speaker 1 (01:32:25):
I had mentioned after I watched it to Jonathan how
like it felt both like everybody was extreme camp until
there was like a genuine heartfelt moment and then they
all became very real, very like vulnerable people, and it
was but it was consistent throughout, so it was a
great director choice.
Speaker 2 (01:32:40):
I think. Yeah. It was also great single Leapita and
Junior acting even when you can't like even for someone
might like me who can't understand Swahili, their moments where
they are performing in Swahili were really I mean, it's
very affecting. And it what a great crowd for that
particular or I don't know if they recorded on multiple
(01:33:04):
performances and then edited it together, but yeah, the crowd
was fantastic for that show.
Speaker 1 (01:33:10):
Yeah, yeah, And the staging and the costumes were all
really nice. Anyhow, PBS putting out some good, good stuff,
and I think that this documentary on Dick van Dyke
will be equally as good. Of course, I am a
huge Dick Van.
Speaker 2 (01:33:26):
Dyke fan, me too, and so are tons of actors
and writers and comedians that you probably know and love.
The trailer is largely a bunch of segments of interviews
of various people in the entertainment industry talking about how
influential Dick Van Dyke's work has been and how influential
(01:33:49):
the man himself has been two people. Carol Burnett has
some extremely lovely things to say about.
Speaker 1 (01:33:56):
Him, including that he's sexy, which I agree. I thought
he was, like I had a crush on Mary Tyler
Moore slash Mary Poppins Dick Van Dyke for many years.
Speaker 2 (01:34:09):
Yeah, I one of my favorite Dick Van Dyke performances
I've never actually seen. I've only heard, oh yeah, because
he was in Bye Bye Bertie, and he was in
the film version of Bye Bye Bertie. But that is,
especially when you get to the second half, almost almost
(01:34:31):
not recognizable from the original stage musical, Like they are
just totally different stories once you get past like the
first half of it or so. And so I've heard
from the cast recording, I've heard his performance, but you know,
it's not like there's if there is a film version,
(01:34:51):
like an actual filmed version of that performance, I'm not
aware of it. Obviously, that was in an era well
before video cameras or cell phones or anything like that.
But I loved his performance of Albert Bye Bye Bertie,
and I just wish I could have seen it in person.
Speaker 1 (01:35:15):
My favorite performance of his, and this is probably just
because of the order in which I watched. His milieu
of work is Chitty Chitty Ban Bang.
Speaker 2 (01:35:26):
It's a great, great performance. His dance number in Old
Bamboo is so much fun. You know. Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang is a movie that it's kind of like Willie
Walka in the Chocolate Factory. It's a movie that I
love and I think is almost perfect, except that the
(01:35:47):
slow songs are so boring to me that I immediately
want to skip them to get to the next part
of the story.
Speaker 1 (01:35:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:35:53):
I feel that way about that, Like when Hushaby Mountain
when that not that he does a bad job with it,
he does a great job with the song, but when
that song starts, I'm just like, can we get to
the part where the child catcher shows up? Bleeze?
Speaker 1 (01:36:06):
Yeah, I forgot he was in Dick Tracy.
Speaker 2 (01:36:11):
Oh yeah, yeah yeah. Oh man, Yeah, well you should
probably forget about Dick Tracy entirely.
Speaker 1 (01:36:18):
That watched it in forever, so it was such.
Speaker 2 (01:36:23):
A huge waste of potential. Yeah, and then we're talking
about like we were hoping to do a sequel, like really,
because he killed off about eighty percent of Dick Tracy's
rogues gallery.
Speaker 1 (01:36:35):
I remember enjoying it, but I was also a kid
like like I was.
Speaker 2 (01:36:43):
I think the I think the art direction of that
movie is beyond compare And that's the nicest thing I
can say about it.
Speaker 1 (01:36:52):
It did have some good design to it.
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
Yeah. So anyway, this this documentary about Dick van Dyke,
where it's going to be a big old love fest,
comes out the day before your birthday, December twelfth, the.
Speaker 1 (01:37:04):
Day before his birthday. Yeah, what a what a lovely
birthday present. I will be watching it. I will be
watching it with a big old box of tissues because I.
Speaker 2 (01:37:15):
Fully watching it get emotional.
Speaker 1 (01:37:17):
Yeah. I like watching people make a positive impact on
the world and on other people. And you know, heartfelt
stories always move me.
Speaker 2 (01:37:26):
Absolutely. I am one hund on board with that. And
with that, we have finally come to the end of
our journey for this episode.
Speaker 1 (01:37:37):
Yeah, it's, you know, per usual a long one. But hey,
listen to half now and half next week.
Speaker 2 (01:37:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:37:46):
So, Jonathan, if people want to reach out to you,
do you have time to tell them how?
Speaker 2 (01:37:50):
Oh? Sure? Yeah, No, it's easy. So what you'll need
to do is listen to next week's episode. So here's
the tricky part is, we're not recording next week so
you're going to actually have to tap into a parallel
universe where we do record next week. That's where you're
going to hear about how I did a complete one
eighty on Welcome to darry where I absolutely love the
(01:38:12):
subplot that I've been finding so stupid up to this point.
You're gonna discover that both of us completely turned on
Pluribus because once they started to introduce talking animals, we
just totally fell off the series. You're also going to
hear about how we, upon revisiting the trailer to the
live action Mawana, decide that the cartoon is the bad
(01:38:34):
version and the live action one is the one we're
really excited about. A lot of these things aren't gonna
make a lot of sense, but what you're gonna have
to do is listen to that whole episode, and you're
definitely gonna have to listen to it because you're gonna
have to provide proof at the end. And at the
very end of that episode, Ariel is going to give
you the information on how to actually get out and
(01:38:54):
get in touch with us, but it's totally different from
the way it works in this universe, so you're gonna
have to pay attention to the email address she gives
because in that parallel universe, she actually gives out my
own personal email at the end of every episode, and
no matter what I do, I can't stop her. So
listen for that and then send an email that will
(01:39:16):
get to me. Prove that you listen to the episode,
give me some details, and then ask your question and
I'll get right back to you.
Speaker 1 (01:39:23):
Dang, I thought I was doing that in this universe.
