in Mind Podcast as a conversation I'vebeen wanting to have for a long time
here as we welcome in Rocket Wattsto the Bear in Mind Podcast, and
(00:22):
Rocket, appreciate your time as always, And you know, I just I
just want to dive right in withyour Rocket. You look at the way
you've been playing this year, andyou're coming off an all tournament team performance
in the Cayman Islands Classic and throughthat even you know, twenty three point
games and stuff like that. Rocket, you look happy to me. And
(00:42):
you know when you came in lastyear. You know, obviously you're a
guy that's gonna do what's asking youand everything like that. But is this
is this the most fun you've beenhaving playing basketball in a while. Yeah,
I feel like this year, youknow, and the start of the
year for show going out, well, you know, I'm very happy,
you know, I'm thankful with theteam that I got. Now, you
know, we got a lot ofguys. You know, we just playing
(01:03):
for each other. You know,we got a great coaching staff, you
know, the whole Oakland University andthings like that. You know, it's
going well for it. So forsure, I'm happy. You know,
I'm grateful. You know, Ijust got to keep working and you know,
just keep believing in myself and keepbelieving in my teammates and the whole
coaching staff, and you know, everything gonna be good. You're a guy.
I don't think a lot of peoplemight know this about you. You're
(01:23):
a guy. You don't have alot to say. Man, you just
kind of show up. You're laughingright now. You just kind of show
up, do your thing. Andthat's that. There's not a lot to
you. It's that rocket. No, not for real. I mean,
I'm you know, I'm about business. You know, I feel like you
know, I just I just youknow, love love doing what I'm doing,
and that's playing basketball. So youknow, I feel like everything else
(01:45):
is gonna take care of yourself, you know, And I only control can
control what I can control, andyou know that's how I just go by
it, you know, day byday. Certainly you have one of the
more interesting basketball stories that we've seenin a long time in college basketball,
and I did want to talk withyou about that, just kind of your
journey coming from you know, whatwhat you did in high school and everything
(02:06):
and being like an internet sensation andthen going to Michigan State, your time
there, trans or Mississippi State andultimately to Oakland. You know, just
just tell us a little bit aboutthat rocket in that the microscope that you've
been under for a very very longtime, and in terms of you and
the way you play basketball. Takeus through that journey from Michigan State to
Mississippi State here to Oakland. Ohman, I feel like my years at
(02:30):
missisg State, my two years, you know, that was that was a
great two years. My fresh marriageis playing with the great leaders like kaz
Is Wednesday, Xavery Tillam and JoshLangford and you know Kyle and you know
all those guys, and you knowI came in with my leak hall.
So yeah, I feel like atMisigan State, I had a great year.
You know, we played at alot of cool places. You know,
I want a Big Ten championship. We beat Ohio State and you know,
(02:53):
just grateful being coached by coach Izzoand you know coach coach Garlic.
So you know, my first yearat a ministgate at UH Michigan State was
real great. You know, myyears at Missippi State when I transferred,
you know, I had a Ihad a I had an injury that I
end up having mine, I wannasay, I was like a month end,
(03:13):
you know, I had surgery onmy hip. So that kind of
you know, pushed me far back, you know, my third year at
UH Misssippi State, but end upcoming back in the middle of the year,
and you know, it was kindof like up and down year.
I was trying to find my rhythmand things like that. But for the
most part, Missippi State was good, you know, outside of basketball,
you know, just watching the greatfootball teams and things like that. So
(03:36):
you know, I feel grateful toyou know, being coached by coach being
hollering as well. And then fastforward now to to your time here at
Oakland. Was there a similar processhere for you at Oakland? Because Rocket
as a as a guy that hadkind of a courtside seat for for everyone
of your games here at Oakland. It it all It almost seemed like that
to me, like there was kindof a similar process where you are trying
(03:57):
to fit in and look, uh, I've been here a long time.
I'm coach campus be the first oneto tell you when guys transfer in very
rarely is it smooth? You knowwhat I'm saying. And I say smooth,
not like personal or anything like that. I mean, like it's it
can be a complicated system. Rolescan change those types of things that there
is something to it. Reggie Hamiltoncomes to mind, a guy that ended
(04:18):
up leading the nation in scoring. You know, he certainly had his moments
where he had to acclimate and thingslike that. Is that an accurate assessment
on my part? That rocket?Oh? Yeah, for sure. You
know, I don't know too muchof Reggie, but you know I heard
of him and things like that.I know he an Oakland legend. But
yeah, I feel like just playingon the coach camp is great. Man.
(04:38):
You know, he a great coach. You know, he a hard
knows coach, and you know that'swhat I signed up for. He told
me that the day that he recruitedme. He was like, you know,
I'm gonna be hard on you. It's gonna be times where you're not
gonna like me and things like that. But you know that's the stuff that
I and I'm thankful for that acoach that I know that care and you
know, just want to push meto my full potential, you know.
So you know, I'm grateful fora coach Campu to coaching. You know,
(04:59):
it's one of those things things torocket. And I heard Kay Felder
told me this one time too.I asked him about that. You know,
I deal with Campy when when youknow, he gets all charged up
and everything like that, and hetold me something I'll never forget. And
it's something that you know, youyou come across a lot in the world.
Now. He said, you can'tlet the way he says things change
what he's saying and you have totake in what he's saying for what it's
(05:21):
worth. Yeah. Yeah, Ifeel like, Kay, Yeah, I
feel like that's a that's a greatresponse from k Fielder. You know.
I feel like how I look atit when coach getting on me, I
feel like he sees something I don'tsee on the court, you know,
And sometimes I need that because I'llprobably slack a little bit or I'm not
you know, giving you know, the energy that he wants. And I
(05:42):
feel like once he you know, get on me and you know, get
on the team and stuff like that. You know that that pick all of
us up, you know, becauseyou know, we see how how bad
and you know how much you wantto win, and you know, I
feel like, you know, that'sgreat, man, and you know that's
what I need. And you know, if if that keep on continuing,
then we're gonna have a great team. Tell a Rocket wats here on the
bear in Mind podcast. Remember youcan subscribe on iTunes and Spotify. Just
(06:04):
search bear in Mind, click subscribeand you are in there. So Rocket,
you know, just kind of rewindin a little bit there, your
your basketball career so far, Internetsensation and all that kind of stuff.
You were telling me a story beforewe went on the air here. I
mean you you just brought up thefact that things are different for you than
(06:24):
they are for some other people. And I know that when we go on
the road, fans will give youa little extra and things like that,
and you're you you you laugh aboutit like right now because obviously people can't
see you got the smile on yourface. But you know, I mean
that that's part of the package foryou. You've come to grips with that,
right, Yeah, I mean youknow that comes with like that started
with me playing football for the WestSide cousin. I was like only nine
(06:46):
and eight, you know, Iwon NAS New championships and things like that
and and yeah, and when youknow, I always been like a known
guy, you know, just offyou know, who I am outside of
basketball and with sports. So butit really took off, like during my
tenth grade high school year when Iwas going to Old Redford Academy. You
(07:08):
know, my offers started coming in. I start going to the top Nike
camps, and you know, Istarted getting film on me and you know,
mixtapes and stuff getting put out onYouTube every day. And for sure
around that time, and I feellike my eleventh grade year and twelfth grade
year, that's when it took off. You know, obviously me playing with
LaMelo bo Isiah Jackson as by youracademy. You know, I feel like
(07:29):
that's when it, you know, took off the most. You know,
just playing with a great player likeMelo and Isaiah and you know, just
the ceilings that you know, LaMelohat you know, he been you know,
famous and like that since he wasa child as well. So yeah,
man, it's just crazy how youknow, things get change like that
and you could just go places andyou know, make you know, little
(07:50):
kids day and you know, that'swhat I enjoy the most, you know,
to rocket when when you look atit from that perspective, is that
it's something that I feel maybe peopledon't don't even fully understand in that the
amount of pressure that comes with that. And I talk about like fans getting
on you and stuff like that, and I'm sure you get it too,
and you see it on social mediaand you know, if a game doesn't
(08:11):
if you don't score thirty points, then you know, rockets a bust,
you know, was a rocket andthings like that. How do you deal
with that on a day to daybasis, Because contrary to what people might
think, you're a very low keydude. You don't have a lot to
say. And because I was askingabout this earlier, like how come you're
(08:31):
not one of these guys. You'renot on social media like twenty four to
seven and things like that, youlike to just hang out with the family
and all that kind of stuff. Why why are you different? Then?
Maybe I guess you like today's modernyou know, Internet star. I mean
I actually like matured a lot.You know, I'm not saying when I
was young, I used to alwaysbe on social media, but like,
you know, I feel like I'mmatured a lot with me having my son
(08:52):
as well, you know that kindof like humble me and things like that.
But I've just never been a guythat can bring everything to social medias.
I feel like everything then I'm supposedto be for, like the public
and the world, but tours, like you know, basketball wise, I
just you know, stay on myself, you know, spend time with my
family and things like that. Youknow. I be on social media like
you know, here and there.I really like Instagram more than Twitter,
(09:15):
you know, but you know,I be on Twitter and things like that.
But I feel like tours, youknow, when fans and people and
all that bashing me. I usedto look my name up, like my
freshman year at Michigan State, andI used to see stuff like Michigan State
it was crazy and coach It's allused to defend us and stuff like that.
But you know, I just tellpeople that you know, I'm human,
and you know, my ceilings youknow, I set my standards and
(09:37):
my ceilings, you know, meplaying high school and AU so I don't
really like get mad at when whatpeople say about me, because you know,
that's what they expect them. That'swhat I've been doing my whole life.
But you know, once again,I do we want people to think
like I am human and I gothrough stuff outside of basketball. So so
yeah, it's crazy talk with rockand watch here and the Bear in Mind
(10:00):
podcast. My name is Neil rollavoice of the Golden Grizzlies. Happy to
have you with us. So rocketthis team this year. And something interesting
too that I don't know that necessarilya lot of people know as well.
You kind of sliding in to thepoint guard duty for this team. That's
not new territory to you, Againstwhat people might think, against what people
(10:20):
might have heard before. You're verycomfortable in that point guard role. Oh
absolutely, I've been playing point guardlike my whole life, you know,
and I enjoy playing point guard, you know, and I just feel like
me leaving Michigan State, and youknow the situation that when I left Misigan
State, it was a lot ofpeople in fans and stuff saying that I
didn't like I didn't want to playpoint guard, or you know, I
(10:43):
didn't know how to play it.But you know that's not true. I
always been playing point guard my wholelife, and I enjoy playing it.
But I feel like playing a rolehere is great, you know, because
I'm starting to watch a lot morefilm, you know, outside of basketball.
I mean outside of basketball, youknow, when I'm home and chilling
it, you know, just kickingmy feet up. I watched a lot
of fem on things that I needto do better as a point guard,
(11:05):
Like you know where Jack Yogis wantthe ball that when you want to shoot,
or you know where his hot spotsat, and you know where to
get the ball to tray and thingslike that, so and Blake and you
know, you know, just reallyall the guys. So you know,
I feel like I'm very comfortably rightnow on point guard, and I've got
to keep continuing to work and keepwatching film, and everything gonna pay off.
You look at the start to thisseason, as we record this before
(11:28):
the Xavier game, whenever you guysare getting a chance to listen to it
right now, very very good startto the season for the Golden Grizzlies.
Maybe some folks out there might bea little bit surprised as well. You're
not one of them, I wouldimagine surprised I'm playing Xavier. No,
just surprise to the start of theseason where you got you know, you
guys have had the lead in thefinal ten minutes to big ten gyms.
(11:48):
A lot of people are surprised. You're probably not one of them. No,
I'm not surprised. I know whatI expect of my team, and
you know, we got a greatcoaching staff, and you know, our
preparations has been great since the startof the season. You know, you
know, we put a lot ofwork in and practice. You know,
everybody, you know, like Isaid, you know, everybody playing for
each other. And you know,I feel like, you know, we
(12:09):
go hard out there to play forourselves and for our coaches, you know,
and we all just want it,and you know it shows out on
the court. So you know,I feel like if we just keep coming
out, you know, hitting themfirst before they hit us, then you
know, we all gonna tell andwe'll see who gonna come out on top
at the end. Our rocket.Well, we certainly do appreciate the time
man Thanks for the window kind ofinside your life and your journey to Oakland.
