It's time for the Greg Campy Show, presented by r j's Pub. Let's
go live to r j's Pub inRochester Hills. Here's Coach Campy and the
voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neil Rule. What's going on? But welcome back
to another season of the Greg andCampy Show. We're live at r j's
Pub in Rochester Hills. Thunderous applause, standing room only, the fastest growing

(00:24):
coaches show in America and the highestrated show on the station. I have
a question, Yes, why doesthe announcer say, with Greg Campy and
then you're the first person to alwaystalk well the host, right, the
host can't look. I know whatthe deal is. You write the script.
You know the script. I'm hereto take you to a commercial break

(00:44):
and then bring it back and thenyou go back to work. That I
know what my role is here, all right? So all those people on
that are on Twitter today saw thatI put out that any new person tonight
gets a basket of seasoned fries, and obviously I see a lot of new
people. So instead of only OhioState, oh my god, I went

(01:04):
over this with them early. Butinstead of penalizing the people that always come.
Every table is getting in the basketof season fry. So in the
next five or ten minutes you couldget and I will be coming by to
steal some. There you have it. No, but we are back here
at our J's Pub in Rochester Hill'sback four for them or us the other

(01:25):
night? Were you cheered for OhioState or US the other night? Oh?
Okay, all right, then youcan wear that does have the Golden
Grizzlies hat on it. I see, so that is okay, Dida,
that's good. I had one ontwo. There is a fan here with
an Ohio State pullover on. Sothat's you know, that's the source of

(01:46):
contention right now. But camp seasonunderway. A couple of tough, tough
battles in big ten gyms, andthe Golden Grizzlies had to lead inside nine
minutes to go in both of thosegames, and you know, just kind
of bring everybody up to speed rightnow. I know you have to like
it camp just in terms of andlook, it's a double edged sword,
right you don't get a lot ofchances to win those games. But at

(02:07):
the same time, Camp, asyou've had a chance to digest it,
what's your thoughts. Now, Well, we're owing too, and nobody wanted
to be owned too. And Ireally felt if we were healthy, and
we almost were. We didn't haveBeru the first night, and we had
in the second night, but hewas a little you know, he's got
a lot of a learning curve becausehe missed so much time. I thought

(02:28):
we could win. I didn't knowif we could win at Illinois. I
think Illinois is one of the bestdefensive teams we've ever played. I also
think that they're a top fifteen totwenty team, and after what we did
at Ohio State, we had theirattention. You know, maybe you go
in there the first game and they'renot they're thinking they're going to win by
forty and you do some things. So, you know, we had those
two situations. I really felt thatwe could get a win in one of

(02:51):
those games. I walked away feelingwe should have won the Ohio State and
we could have won the Illinois game. That's my feeling afterwards. We made
a lot of critical errors down thestretch in the Ohio State game. Part
of it is a lot of eightnew players and just having not been there.
But I will say this as Isit back and look at it,

(03:14):
and I got over them being upsetthat we had the chance and didn't do
it. In all my years, the great the greatest teams I've ever had,
there's only been one time that weplayed power fives back to back and
played two games like that, andthat was actually there's two times, but

(03:35):
one where we won at Washington andwe came back three days later and Michigan
State was number one in the countryand we lost in overtime. That team
did not That team finished second inthe Horizon League and did not make it
to the NCAA Tournament Team nca Tournament. The team that I had that went
fifty and three over a fifty threegame stretch in the old it's crazy to

(03:55):
hear that those numbers. The teamthat I had at fifty and three,
we played a lot in the league. We were in over a fifty three
game period. That's total domination,right, So that's great. That's a
great basketball team over two years too. So it was some different players.
We played a lot of power fivesand we never did that. We beat

(04:16):
Tennessee and then we went to OhioState and got killed. We beat somebody,
and then we went to Michigan andgot killed. So putting two games
like that back to back, wedid it when we beat Washington and then
two years ago with Jamal Kaine,we didn't have a chance to win at
West Virginia, but it was aclose game. I think we lost by
six. We were never ahead inthe second half, but we hung in

(04:39):
there. And then three nights laterwe beat Oklahoma State on the road.
So that's our comparison. And ifyou look at if you compare this team
to those teams, Jamal Kain's teamwon twenty games. We were eleven and
one in the league when Jalen toour ligament in his wrist right, he
played, but who knows what wouldhave happened that last month if he was

(04:59):
healthy. That k Felder team finishedsecond, got upset in the conference tournament,
and then went out to that Vegastournament and got to the championship game
and lost at the Buzzer to veryvery good Old Dominion team. So if
you put us in that same categorywith those teams, you got to feel
really good about what happened and wherewe're at now. We got to stay

(05:19):
healthy and if you don't know this, you will tomorrow night. Blake Lampman
will not be playing tomorrow night, and we don't know when he'll be back.
He suffered with about three minutes agoin the game against Illinois, he
suffered a fairly serious injury to hiship, and you know, he was
on crutches for two days. He'soff crutches now. We're hoping that we

(05:41):
have him back by the time weget back from the Cayman Islands. That's
a critical blow to us because asyou saw in that first exhibition game,
not only is Blake playing great,he's averaging. In the two games he
made four or three point shots pergame. If he goes the whole season
making four per game, he'll finishin the top five in the country.
He's shooting it at forty, whichis the number. Yeah, that's the

(06:03):
critical number, right, So justtaking that off the floor. And then
the big thing is Blake has beenan unbelievable leader for this group. When
you have eight new guys and youplay the defense that we play, which
is a very assignment, hard tolearn defense, you have to have someone

(06:24):
on the court, and Blake's thatguy. And so I'm really really concerned
about not having him tomorrow night. We're going to have to really step up
in certain places to make up.Not so much for the four shots,
because he could go one for tentomorrow night if he played, but more
for that leadership and for that presencedefensively, because I will tell you this,

(06:45):
Illinois against us on Friday night, that was I called his after the
game and I said that their defensereminded me of your national championship team and
the final four teams. They defendedlike those Michigan State teams. That is,
if you make the slightest air,if a pass is down here and

(07:05):
you've got to catch and shoot insteadof right here, you're not getting a
shot off. And you don't seethat. You see that defense for three
or four possessions. Here there abig possession, crowds going crazy, But
to see it for thirty six minute, I mean, we came out and

(07:26):
smacked him right and the nose.It was eight to nothing. He called
time out and that kid Shannon cameout and Gokie didn't even He was plastered
on Goki for the rest of thegame. And we do a lot of
stuff to get our shooters open, and usually when they play like that through
the course of the game, they'regonna get tired. We're they're gonna make
a mistake. That kid never madea mistake. And Underwood said to me

(07:48):
after the game, would you agreethat Shannon is the best two way player
in the country. I go,I don't know about the offense, but
that's as good a defense as I'veever seen played by anybody. As good
as Illinois was to offensively, wewere that good too. We held Illinois
to twenty nine points in their buildingin the first half. I think they

(08:09):
had thirty six or whatever it was. In the second half, we held
in sixty three. Was that whatit was? Sixty three points, sixty
two something like that. When you'reOakland, you're not really known for your
defense, but even going into abuilding like that, and if you saw
it on TV, you might haveseen it if you were there alive.
There were fifteen five hundred people there, and they prepared for us. Their

(08:33):
fans prepared for us like it wasa Big ten basketball game. Their student
section, which wrapped the thing. They had newspapers with every one of our
stats on it. They're calling Rocketnames, they're you know, the headline
on the newspaper was, where thehell is Oakland. I mean, they
brought their game and our kids wentout there and punched them right and the

(08:54):
nose. To start. We playeda really, really good basketball game.
The last five six minutes, wecouldn't score, and part of that was
my fault. I just I don'tthink I substituted very well in the second
half, and I think that gotus in a little bit of trouble.
Trey Townsen played a few too manyminutes. And the difference, the difference

(09:18):
when I say that versus our league, is the physicality of it. When
Trey took the ball of the basket, he got hit seventy three times.
On the seventy fourth time, theymight have called a foul now and then,
but you know, he just gotbumped and hit and that's going to
wear you out. And we didthe same to them, though we were
physical with them, which I reallyliked how physical we were. The Ohio

(09:43):
State game came down to, youknow, critical plays and a couple bad
calls. And I'm not saying thatthe fishame was bad, because it wasn't,
but we had critical calls that wentagainst us or didn't go for us.
And when you're going to win agame, like that, everything's got

(10:03):
to go your way. In thelast four or five minutes, they called
Isaiah Jones, we're up to andwe were on a set and he set
an unbelievable screen and it got lampand wide open and they called an offensive
fall on the screen. And whyI watch it on film, it was
it was not a file. Butthere were a lot of times during the
games that maybe we did screen andit was a foul. So it's not

(10:26):
an excuse, but it took thepossession away from us when we had a
chance to go up, you know, two possessions with two or three minutes
to go, we stepped out ofbounce a wide open guy standing with a
foot out of bounce. I mean, that's a critical air on our part.
If you're going to win that typeof game, you can't make those
airs. We missed some free throws. Now we had guys at the line

(10:48):
that probably aren't great free throw shootersin the critical time, but you still
got to make them. And thenthe biggest call of the game was,
you know, we led the wholeway. They took the lead, they
got it up to seven or eight, and we one of the signs that
I really like Neil is that alot of teams would have folded and went
away. And we got it fromsix or seven right back down to one.

(11:09):
And there's a shot. They shoota bad shot. We have the
ball with a minute to go.One of our players catches the rebound and
they come down right on top ofhim and he loses the ball out of
bounce. They give it to OhioState because they didn't call a foul,
which I believe was a foul, but they didn't call it. But we

(11:31):
still got to hold onto the ball. If we hold onto the ball,
now we've got a possession to takethe lead with a minute to go.
Instead, it goes out of bound. They run a play and they make
a three and the game's over. And so we were that far away from
winning that game, and we werevery close at Illinois. Now what does
that mean? No, I don'tknow. I don't know. I really

(11:52):
don't. I don't know what itmeans. Well, we find out tomorrow,
right well, to some degree,to some degree, yeah, we
still you know, it means thatwhen we and we didn't have our a
game. We didn't you know, usually when you win a game, like
when we beat Washington by twenty Afew years ago, Kay Felder had thirty
seven points twenty seven in the firsthalf. They couldn't stop him. Nobody
on our team had a game likethat. We just methodically played really really

(12:16):
good basketball, really really good defense, and then our big achilles heel is
rebounding. At least we thought that, and in the first half it appeared
it was going to be again atOhio State. In the second half,
Ohio State got two offensive rebounds. Then we go to Illinois, who I
think going in is. I mean, Illinois beat Kansas, now, all
right, Kansas is the number oneteam in the country. They beat him.

(12:39):
Now, it's an exhibition game, and we don't put a whole lot
of stock into exhibition games. Butthey still beat it, and they did
it by dominating the glass against Kansas. I was concerned that it was going
to be one hundred offensive rebounds andwe shut them down until the last couple
of minutes of the game. Theydidn't. I think they only had a
couple. I think they ended withsix maybe or four or something like that.
It was a small number, andthey got three in the last three

(13:01):
minutes. And it was more.It wasn't they out rebounded us. It
was the ball came loose and theycame up with it. And part of
that again goes back to we werea little tired down the stretch, and
it goes on me for not substituting. And one of the things I said
is I want to play Towns inthirty two minutes at the most. And

(13:22):
I played him more than that, and only because I thought we could win.
That's why I did it. ButCamp, I know, and you
talked about that. By the way, this season the Great Campus Show brought
to you by Henry Ford Sports Medicine, the official team physicians for Oakland University
and you for more info visit HenryFord dot com. Backslash Athletes. But
Camp, the circumstances change, right, I mean when you're yeah, I

(13:43):
know what you're going to say,s early in the year and you got
to stay. I mean, Ican't do that. We want to win
in February and in March, andI can't do that. And the competitiveness
got to me and it was itwas a mistake. And now did it
cost us the game? I don'tknow, but it sures how didn't help
us win. Camp. I wantto back up to what you said too,
because it was something I talked aboutduring the radio broadcast and when your

(14:07):
guys back was to the wall inthose moments that you talked about, you
know, those critical runs of thegame were maybe in the past that is
where the league gets stretched out tofifteen and the horses get out of the
barn. Pretty much every single timeup until you know, that last two
minute time stretch that you talked about, you guys were able to answer,
I mean every single time why well, And again, I think that goes

(14:31):
back to what I said earlier. The teams that have been really really good
at Oakland Over. I mean,we play that schedule every year. We're
usually go in and you know aMichigan State. Last year we played great
and they they scored, They outscoreda seventeen to two in the last minute
and a half of the first half, in the first three minutes of the
second half. The rest of thegame, we outscored them. There's always

(14:52):
that one stretch when you're maybe notas good a team as a championship level
team. But our championship level teamshave always been able to do what this
team did, and so that's areally good sign except we're only two games
in and you know, there's somany there's so many we don't know about
this team right now. And I'msaying that as their coach, you know,

(15:15):
so as fans, I'm sure you'rethinking that, what the hell is
he talking about? You're supposed toknow? Right well? I don't.
I don't. It's just too soonand there's too many new players. Now.
Do we know what Trey Townsend is? Sure? Do we know what
Lampman is? Sure? You know? But I mean, we've got some
critical players that are new, Andthe best thing about this team is our

(15:37):
depth. You know we're talking.Oh, say, Price right now is
our tenth man. He's been oursixth man for the last three years.
He's our tenth man right now, maybe eleventh. Hopefully he'll be back to
six before the year's over, becausewe know what we have with him.
But you know, you've got dQ Cole coming off the bench. You've

(15:58):
got Tone Hunter coming off the benchright now, you got Beru coming off
the bench. Beru. I thinks, before Burru's out of here, it
all goes well and he stays healthy, He's going to be one of the
best players Oakland's ever seen as faras that position. He's really talented,
he's just raw and he's and hedidn't get the practice for two months for

(16:21):
him to do what he did inthat game against Illinois without having practice for
his first time ever on a Divisionone basketball court, in front of fifteen
thousand people, with us winning, the pressure that was on him to perform
and compete. He was in adaze and he's still. I talked to
him after the game, and youknow, that first stretch you could tell
was, you know, kind ofa little bit out of his element.

(16:44):
And for him to play the wayhe did knowing that, imagine when he's
confident when to do. I thinkthe alley up at the end of the
half really helped too. I thinkit you know, it felt like,
hey, yeah, I can dothis anywhere. So we got a lot
of really good players, a lotof unknowns. That's what the season's about,
and it looks like it has achance to be a pretty exciting season.
Again, though I'm going to cautioneverybody our schedule is it's rough.

(17:11):
Yeah, I mean it's rough.I tried to fire the guy that made
it, but then I really liketo play golf and I need the money,
so I decided. So I thoughtmaybe that happened camp because you got
the sport code on. You know, I didn't know, maybe interviewed at
Texas A and M for the footballjob or something. I didn't know what
was going on. I was waitingfor him to call. That's why I

(17:32):
heard they called Campbell though instead.I don't know. All right, Well,
when we come back, we'll bejoined by a new addition to the
Golden Grizzlies coaching staff. Bobby Naubertwill be our guest here on The Greg

Right now, as promised, weare joined by the newest edition to
the Golden Grizzlies coaching staff. Heis Bobby and Aubert. Bobby, look
at that man. You command theroom. Bobby, You command the room.
No great to catch up with you, Bobby, and I know that
that you've brought a lot to thisteam, both from a roster perspective some
of the other stuff, and weare going to get into all that.
But you come here to Oakland fromGarden City. You know, down there

(20:57):
in the Jayhawk League, a legendaryJuco basketball league. You've seen your fair
share of good players out of there, one hundred percent. Like I said
the other night, very fortunate towork for a really good coach down there
and have a lot of really goodDivision one players. I've been in the
coach the last three years. Yeah. Absolutely. Now some of the guys
have have come up here to theGolden Grizzlies with you as well, and

(21:18):
we've heard coach can't be talking aboutit, and you know Beru is the
guy certainly. Just I'll tell youthis, Bobby, just seeing him in
shoot around the day of the Illinoisgame, just hammering dunks like you if
you're not watching, you just hearit. It's one of those things.
You turn around and you look likehe plays physical. Yeah, that's uh

(21:40):
a specialty, right. So atGarden City and a lot of those dunks
and we're still looking for someone tothrow it to him. You know,
we got Blake Lambman throwing a couplehere and there, but we got one
before the half and Coach Trope areally good play and got on that back
door dunk. But he's he's exciting. You know. The whole season.
You're gonna see a lot of bigtime dunks, hopefully over a few people
here and there. Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely. But we are
talking to Bobby and Aubert here onthe Greg camp Be Show. So,

(22:03):
Bobby, so far a couple ofgames in to your tenure here at Oakland,
bring me up to speed man, what are you seeing out there?
You know for the first two games, we talked about that first interview about
wanting to go out and execute, and I was extremely proud of the guys
how they took the game plan, went out there and focused on things that
we thought were important. To winand compete. You know. The first
thing was controlling the tempo, controllingthe pace. You know, we talked

(22:23):
about if we were playing the seventies, sixties, seventies, we'd have a
chance, and we did a goodjob. Are both of our point guards
not turning the ball over, havington I think ten and nine turnovers in
both those two games, and keepingus a chance in it and just competing,
you know, Coach talked about itfifteen thousand people. You know,
you can't even hear yourself thinking there, Yeah, it's going on. Your
mind's moving, and I can't imaginebeing on that court. And I thought

(22:45):
our guys were really composed, youknow, moving the ball side to side
and executing and did a really goodjob. Well Camp was talking about that.
I put a video out there onsocial media the pre game. I
mean that scene in Illinois not anempty seat in that gym at all.
They were all the way in,they were all the way locked in.
It was college basketball like that. That was college basketball for sure. And

(23:07):
I mean our guys were super excitedfor that opportunity. And it's really a
good opportunity for us as coaches tobe able to go and recruit and sell
that, you know, to playin so many of these big time games.
You know, we got six ofthem on the schedule. You know,
go to a minute or MSU.You know we just played at Illinois
played Ohio State. It's easy totext to recruit the next day and like,
hey, you get you can't cover. Yeah, you see us yesterday

(23:27):
last night we only lost by acouple points to Ohose State. You come
here and you know, maybe bea difference be a difference maker and could
be a recruiter ondred percent. Yeah, I got you. I need to
I need to do with me now, I'll be I'll be, I'll be
happy to do it. Bobby, all right, I got to put you
on the spot. Then he's sittingright over there, so remember that.
Okay, what's it like working forcoach Campy? Unbelievable? You know every

(23:47):
day? Hold on say it.I don't know if he was paying text
unbelievable, unbelievable. No, inall seriousness, I'm so blessed to be
able to work for him every singleday. And you know he doesn't do
this for forty years about being goodat it and for me to you know,
be there and learn and continue togrow and just see the attention to
detail that he has every single day. It makes me a better coach and
a better personal role, all right, Bobby. One of the I don't

(24:11):
want to call it a misconception becausemaybe people don't know. But the fact
of the matter is when the gameis over, your guy's workday is you're
only at like your first break ofthe day, right Like it's it's not
you're not done. You don't justbe like you know, the the announcer
guy and sit there on the busand go to sleep like you you're I
always that would have been yeah, trade roles no. But but but I

(24:33):
saw you though, Bobby, Likewe get in there as you eat.
You know, you got you gotthe video out you you're watching the game,
you got the notebook. A whatare you writing in the notebook?
And b what are you doing?Yeah? Uh, you know, I
think there's always things you can takeaway from the game. Obviously you look
at the big stats, the bigpicture, you're looking at the turnovers something
like that. But we're really tryingto break down every aspect of it,
you know. For even what I'mchatting on the way home from the bus

(24:56):
was the rebounding. So let's sayyou only got two offensive rebound so you
only got two defensive rebounds, andwe're looking like, hey, we need
more, we need more audio. But how many times did you check somebody
out right, you know, togive us a chance to get the ball.
I think there's so many things individuallystat wise that can help players grow
and get better. If I toldyou were two rebounds, ed I tell
you you were eleven for twelve blockingout. You know, it's a little
bit different a picture. But I'ma big believer in preparation. You know,

(25:21):
I think that scouting reports can giveyou eight to ten points a game.
You know, especially in all thegames that we've been playing, how
close it is. If I cango out there and steal two points for
our team, you know, I'mgonna spend as many hours and watch as
many games. And you know alot of you guys were at the chalk
Talk the first time and trying to, you know, get in the side
of the opponents and coaches head, you know, trying to realize what he's
gonna run, how he's gonna runit and steal a couple of points hopefully,

(25:44):
No, but Bobby, it isn't. It is intriguing to me because
I saw you and Coach Covington doingthis. In Coach Covet, you'll just
pop up and you guys will runa playback and you'll talk about on a
screen. You'll talk about shoulder angles, like you know, if your shoulder
was turned in, if it wasout wider, it would have created that
eighth of an inch of space maybethat we could have got the shot.
I mean, the line is thatfine, Like that is the details and

(26:07):
I'm just putting it out there forpeople that they understand likes. But literally
no detail is missed. I mean, anything that you can do to get
an advantage, you're going to dofor sure. And like I said,
that's why it's awesome to work forCoach Campy. Like at the end of
the day, the amount of detailshe has in every single one of his
sets and the movement player movement whereeveryone needs to be at the right time,

(26:29):
it's really like he's, you know, orchestrating the band, I guess
you could say. So for meto see those details and figure out how
that works and be able to putthat in my playbook or my notebooks really
important to me as well, allright, we're talking to Bobby and Aubert
here on the Greg Campy Show Liveat r J's pupp in Rochester Hills.
Not that this will apply to youanytime soon, hopefully, like not until
April or whatever. But what doyou what do you do off the floor,
Bobby? What are you about? You know? I love basketball.

(26:52):
I'm obsessed so obviously through this periodright now, I'm just really focused on
watching as much film as possible inthe summer. I love the golf,
big time golfer. We'll get out, Yeah, we'll get out. We'll
get out here. Probably beat me. But I'm getting there. I'm not
good enough to go out with Coachcamp yet. He isn't. I'm not
quite to that level. Maybe oneday I'll get there. But you know,
love watching sports, Love being withmy family, you know, I

(27:14):
love anything outdoors. I'm a tripletso brother and sister really yeah, we
all like to get together and hangout and you know, go to a
bar every now and then. Okay, gotcha. So you played professional basketball
over in Germany. That's correct. Two years two years of pro basketball over
in Germany. You know what? What? What? What was? What
was the deal with that? Howdid you How did that come to be?
Yeah, so you're a player,right, I was, okay,

(27:37):
Yeah, I saw so. Iplayed at mo Downa University and was a
three time All American there, andI was very fortunate to kind of get
like almost like a tryout, likea one month trial. Like they liked
what my game was, they didn'treally trust that I was that good,
so they're like, hey, here'sa here's a ticket, come out here
and prove it. And you know, I worked out for that first month
and got an opportunity to stay withthe club and kept going, you know,
kept working, kept grinding, andunbelievable experience. I wouldn't trade that

(28:02):
experience for anything. Terrible with thelanguage, I'm glad you didn't ask me
if I could speak any German. That was not gonna happen on the show.
But yeah, I played for twoyears. I was All All League
over there for two years, andyou know, I kind of got to
the point where I was like, you know, what what else am I
going to be doing in life? And I had my education degree, so
I was talking about, you know, student teaching and maybe getting involved in

(28:25):
coaching a little bit. And wentback to the Downe University where I played
at and started being the reserve headcoach there as like a JV I guess
you could say head coach and justget my feet wet and getting my coaching
voice, and I fell in lovewith it. You know, I really
didn't think that was going to bemy path. I thought I was just
gonna, you know, teach andkind of help out in high school.
And after that first year, Iwas like, I really want to get
involved in there. Yeah. Itook a five thousand dollars stipend job at

(28:48):
Central Michigan as a GA and afterthat was kind of keep going on.
No, absolutely last one before Ilet you go here, Bobby, this
team, if this Golden Grizzlies teamis going to get to where we all
want them to go, what's what'sthe path? What will it take?
I think the superstar has got tobe superstars. You know, Trey Townsend's
got to be a big time playerfor us. But we've talked about it

(29:08):
so much. It's gonna be themeshing of this group and getting everyone on
the same page. It can't justbe tray every night. We're gonna need
you know, those those seniors wouldbe really good. You know Blake hopefully
when he gets healthy and we knowhow important he is out there as we
saw him the exhibition game, andyou know goalkeep taking that role. But
then those new guys being brought inand speed up to the process as quick
as possible. But with that beingsaid, I think we have a really

(29:29):
good chance to do that and I'mexcited for it. All right, Bobby,
appreciate the time for sure. Whenwe come back to the Greg Campy

Show live at r j's Paul hidRock, Chester Hills. He is a
coach, Greg Campy. My nameis you know Rule camp Before we get
to the before we get to theask Campy portion of the show, what

(32:07):
about this crowd to the standing roomonly tonight. Yeah, it's great,
it's great. Let's win some gamesso you keep coming back. And everybody's
thinking about what Bobby said about hestarted at five thousand dollars at Central Michigan.
Uh, I'm not sure what we'regonna pay him right now. He's
being paid by the wins, sohe might be thinking Central was a bargain.

(32:30):
If things don't start turning around, need a better agent, Bobby,
I'll just say I'll just say itlike that. You're ready for the inaugurals
of the season of ask campy campBefore we get into to the ones today,
there is one that came at theend of last year that I kind
of do want to touch on andget your thoughts from. Uh Grizzly Fan

(32:50):
wanted, do you think I canremember last year? No, that's why
I'm gonna I don't remember where Ipart Yeah, I know. Uh Grizzly
Fan asked, coach, what areyour thoughts on the league changing the scheduling
struck sure coming into this season?Okay, yeah, for those that don't
know, they've gone away from travelpartners, and the coaches were huge in
this. We've asked for this foryears. The administrators didn't want to do

(33:13):
it because of it it's more expensive. So the real they've kept a couple
of them, like we go toNorthern Kentucky and Wright State on a Thursday
Saturday, and we go to theGreen Band Milwaukee on a Thursday Saturday.
Why we do I don't know. Some schools do. Some schools don't.
But basically we wanted Wednesday Saturday gamesso that you have more than one day

(33:37):
prep. You know, it's reallykind of unfair in our minds as coaches.
These games are so important and you'regonna play. Let's say you play
Thursday night and you go double overtime, then you got to play it noon
on Saturday. You might as astaff be able to prepare in that time,
but the players are be tired, they're not listening, you know.

(34:00):
So by having that extra day,you get a day of rest and then
you get proper prep for the game. So we really push that and I
think that if we're going to bea big time you know, our conference
used to be a top twelve conferencein the country. We've kind of fallen
off where we're down like nineteen ortwenty maybe last year twenty one or something
like that. And if we're goingto get back to the days of being

(34:22):
a top twelve or thirteen team aconference in the country, we need to
do things to improve our teams, and giving that extra day off we'll do
that for so that extra day ofpreparation. So that's why it happened.
I don't know how much the fanswill like it because you're used to Thursday
Saturday and now it's gonna go WednesdaySaturday or Thursday Sunday. But with time,

(34:42):
we'll figure it all out and you'llget used to it. And if
we're good, you're gonna come. So, you know, we just got
to be good. Jimmy Kennedy, our producer for the radio broadcast, has
an asked camp be question and kindof piggybacks on that. What are your
thoughts on starting conference play so earlythis season, especially with the game against
that school down the road in CallahanHall so early. I didn't know he
was allowed to ask questions. Hegoes to the front of the line.

(35:05):
Yeah, he's got sweat equity inthere. Okay, I guess he's pushing
the buttons. So yeah, youknow, if we're going to play a
twenty game league schedule, we haveto play a couple early. I'm against
a twenty game schedule, but wehave a scheduling philosophy that's different than most

(35:25):
teams in our league. For thenon league, if you're at Green Bay,
it's hard to get games, andif you're in certain outpost type places,
it's hard to get non conference games, and so if you play more
conference games, that's an extra homeIf you play twenty, that's ten home
games. If you only play eighteen, it's nine obvious, right, So

(35:45):
a lot of schools in the leaguewant twenty games. It also gives you
a fair regular season champion because it'sa round robin. It's like, if
you only played eighteen and let's sayOakland's the worst team in the league and
a team didn't get to play ustwice, they're gonna be it's not a
fair championship. So playing twenty givesyou that. But for me doesn't matter.

(36:10):
The conference tournament is what matters.I would rather play more non league
games, a better chance to buildyour RPI, a better chance to build
your seeding, a better chance tomake more money, a better chance to
solidify if you do go the NCAAtournament, a thirteen or twelve seed instead
of a fifteen or sixteen seed. All right, that's why I'm for an

(36:32):
eighteen game thing. I lost theleague believes in twenty games, so we
got to play too early. Now, I think they just use a computer
program or something like that, andthey just flip it in there and outcomes
whatever. Because and that's not unfair. They work their tails off at it

(36:53):
and they do the best they can. But for us to play Detroit on
a Wednesday in November probably isn't whatwe would want. I would say it's
not the best use of that game. Yeah, I mean, if I'm
Detroit, I'm more mad than Oaklandbecause if I'm Detroit, that's my biggest
crowd of the year, and it'sgoing to be a Wednesday night instead of

(37:13):
a Saturday or Friday night. Sofor us, you know, maybe our
fans will show up like we usedto do down there and put three thousand
Oakland fans into place we have.We haven't lost there in ten years,
you know. Yeah, I likethat, so you know, I sure
would like to make that eleven yearsin about three weeks. And it's a

(37:36):
must win for us, you know, it's it's really an important game.
Stupid schedule of maker has got usplaying Xavier on Monday night though, which
probably isn't very real smart, butwe'll be ready. Pittsburgh, Marty back
at it. Good to hear fromPittsburgh. Marty again says I'm excited for
the season. It's encouraging to seeus so competitive early with two Big ten
teams. I did notice last weekwe signed three recruits for twenty five four

(38:00):
twenty five. Can you briefly tellus about some of their strengths. Well,
I think that you know, oneof the things that's unique is that
we signed a high school kid.But this young man, this young man
came to me when he was afreshman and he was in our he was
with Brother Rice. He was inthe team camp that we have where we

(38:21):
bring seventy teams in in the summertime. And he came up to me as
a freshman in high school and said, I'm going to play at Oakland.
I looked at him and said, yeah, I hope you can play at
Brother Rice first, you know, but yeah, sure, Okay. Well
then he got real good and heobviously a really really good player. And
what I found out, and thisis this is how the Tentacles reach out

(38:45):
so far. The reason that thisyoung man wanted to go to Oakland is
because he was at the Boys andGirls Club of Auburn Hills and I came
there and spoke and our players wouldgo there, and we put a clinic
and then Kendrick Nunn got in alittle bit of trouble. Uh drove drove

(39:05):
without a driver's license and got stoppedand sorry, Kendrick, but it's a
good story now. And so inUH, the judge gave him like fifty
hours of community service or something likethat. So because of my relationship with
the Boys and Girls Club, Iwent to them and said, here's Kendrick

(39:28):
Nunn. You get fifty hours ofhim doing whatever you want him to do.
And it ended up that Kendrick coachedthis kid in their in their open,
you know, his his work there. He and the kid became very
close and that's why the kid wantedto come to Oakland. I always thought
it was me, wasn't. Soso here's here's that relationship. Now,

(39:49):
four years later, we're recruiting himand I said to his dad and mom
and everything, I said, well, he said he's coming, So I'm
not going to recruit him. He'scoming. Here's his scholarship. Well it
didn't work that way, but wedid recruit him very, very hard,
and we were very fortunate to gethim. And Warren's got really a really
good chance of really big upside. He's a six foot four, six foot
five, he says, he's sixsix maybe maybe probably not, but maybe

(40:13):
wing and he you know in ourzone with his length, and the reason
that he wasn't recruited for the Powerfives is because no different than Trey Townsend.
Trey Townsend was one hundred and ninetypounds when he came to Oakland.
He's two hundred and thirty five nowright And I told Warren he's about one
hundred and twenty five right now.But if we can get you over,

(40:35):
you know, to two fifteen, two twenty, he'll have an NBA level
body because he's got the length andall that. And I think he's going
to have a great career for us. He hopefully we can keep him and
you know, he can grow andget better and we can keep him through
his career. So we're really excitedabout Warren and for USh to take a
high school kid, you know whatthat means. Then the two twins,

(41:00):
they're both they came back as thetwo leading scorers and junior college in the
country. They're twins, and Imean identical twins. I don't if they
walked in right now, I couldn'ttell you who who. The last time
I had that were the Champagnes andboy what problems they were. But these

(41:21):
two kids can absolutely shoot the basketball, and I've you know how much I
value that. Smittie and I wereat a at the junior college tournament last
year recruiting a kid name always Rightthat we lost. He went to Rhode
Island and he's doing really well atRhode Island. But we were watching that
game and then the game after it, here are these two twins, and

(41:44):
we're just sitting there waiting for thegame and we're watching, going Holy,
look at these two guys. Andthen we looked into it and we started
recruiting them. And I don't knowhow we got them, because I didn't
think there was any chance we couldget them, but we did. They
wanted to play together, and Ithink that's why we got them. I
think that if they would have gonetheir own individual way, they both would
have been recruited, probably to theAtlantic ten, maybe even higher. But

(42:07):
they wanted to play together, whichis only going to be a problem for
me because they play the same position. So we'll see how that works out.
But they're both they can really shootthe basket well. They're also kind
of thin, but they're long andthey're athletic about six two six three guards
that can really shoot Jeremy Schultz andyou can get involved hashtag ask camp Be

(42:28):
On Twitter, Jeremy Schultz says, what are the struggles with Rocket wats production
and how do you fix that?Well? I can't fix it. I've
tried. I can't fix it.That's it's going to all be on Rocket.
You know, he's he's been herethirty four thirty five games. He

(42:50):
started every game. We need himto be productive, we need him to
make some shots. We're trying tomake him a point guard this year,
and in many ways he's answered tocall that. He's only turned it.
He had a huge turnover in thegame Friday night, but I can't name
another one that he had. He'sreally he's handled the ball well. He

(43:14):
struggles with some point part of beinga point guard. But where he's struggling
right now is putting the ball inthe basket. And it's, in my
opinion, it's all mental. Imean, the kid's been a scorer his
whole life and he's just really strugglingand at some point he's going to have
to do it or somebody else isgoing to have to do it. So

(43:35):
he and I have had that conversation. He's going to start tomorrow night with
blake out. We really we needsomebody else to step up and get us
those twelve or fourteen points, andhopefully Rocket will do that. All right,
camp, let's do this. We'lltake the break right now. When
we come back, we'll wrap theseup. We got about five or six
more. We'll touch on green.I need to give smaller answers. Always

Greg Campy. My name is NeilRoll Greg Hessen. Back in our

as we are back in effect foranother season of The Greg Campy Show.

(46:37):
Just cleaning up the Ask Campy portionand remember you can get your questions in
on Twitter Horizon. Matt wants toknow, says, it will be a
coach a show without me asking anask Campy about the rotation. What it
wouldn't be a coach's show up withouthim making one of them ask you?
Oh, asking about the rotation? He says, I misunderstood. Yeah,

(46:59):
it's hey, before you question,I just noticed something. What's up?
Eric Polge stand up. Eric pogOur soccer coach won the Horizon League Championship
this year Man Coach of the Year. Congratulations. Okay, what's his question?
Uh? All right, it's early, but you've shown depth that we

(47:21):
haven't seen in a while. Oshas been hasn't seen the floor much despite
being in his third year, inaverage sixteen minutes a game last year.
What are you seeing or not seeingfrom Mose Price? Well, I say
Osay is a very important piece toour puzzle. He has not gotten a
real opportunity of the first two games, and that's mostly because you know,

(47:42):
I did not substitute as much asI'd like to at those at that position
that he plays with Golki and Lampman. Now, with Blake being out,
he's gonna have to step up.And like I tell every kid on the
team, in the forty years I'vedone this, the thirty nine years before
this, there's never been a seasonwhere a player didn't get an opportunity.
It's going to happen. There's sicknesses, injuries, guys play poorly. I

(48:07):
get mad at somebody, I yankthem out of the game, and I
want to teach them a lesson.I'm gonna sit them for a half.
Someone, if you're on our roster, you're always going to get to go
out there. It might be asmall it might be a small window,
might be a huge window. Andyou've got to be prepared for it.
And when you get your chance,as in life, when you get your
chance, you got to step forwardand you've got to be prepared for it.

(48:29):
You got to come every day.Os he's going to get that opportunity.
Now, he didn't get much inthe first two games. Now he's
going to get that opportunity because Blake'sout. How's he going to play?
Is he going to cement himself inthere where and I have to play him?
Or is he just going to getthrough it and then the next guy?
You know? So that's all gonnabe on him. My goal is

(48:50):
to play the best players and toto win games. And he's got to
play. He's got to play better. Our guy, Austin Davis here in
the house tonight, says ask Camp. After a couple close games, get
some fierce Big ten opponents, whatdo you have to do to keep the
guys motivated during the next slate ofgames? Well, when you're on too
if you're not motivated, I thinkthere's nothing I can do to do that.

(49:10):
I mean, I got a reallygood group of kids. I got
an old group of kids. Andagain I told you last year, we
have to get old and stay OLED'sthat's what's winning mid major basketball. Now,
getting old and staying old until thisCOVID year thing's over, that's what
we're going to have to do.We did it. Now let's see how

(49:30):
we handle things. I'll tell youif you were to come and watch practice,
it's a lot different this year thanit's been in the past. There's
no young kids that we're trying tobreak down and teach and get better.
It's older kids that understand what's goingon, and practices are a lot more
calmer, they're a lot shorter, and they're you know, really really fundamental

(49:53):
based practices. In other words,as Bobby was saying, their detail.
You run this set play, howdo you set this screen? How do
you how do you read? Whodo you read? You know, all
the things, the little details ofthe game that because we're older, we
can teach. And you know,we're not teaching how to get in the
stands, how to guard a dribbler, how to check out how to do

(50:15):
those things. We're teaching the fundamentalside of becoming great and so being old.
That's really that's as sure as hellhope that we handle this. Now.
Are we going to have some nightsthat that we're not it looks like
we're not motivated or it looks likewe're going through the motion. Sure,
show me a team that doesn't.Right. The difference is the great,

(50:37):
great teams find a way to winon those nights. They get motivated,
something happens, they get playing. You know, right now, I think
we're showing that we can guard. So on nights we don't make shots,
We're still going to be in games. We've showed that through two games.
We got it. That's a verysmall sample size. Plus we have to
play our level. We're going toget a chance to do that tomorrow night,

(50:59):
and then in that tournament down there. It's our level, but it's
high, high our level. Imean, we're playing Drake, who's the
number one ranked a mid major teamin the country in some polls. Then
we're gonna play either Steven f.Austin or Loyal and Marrimont. They're both
really, really good. I haven'teven looked on the other side of the
bracket, because I'm scared of thisside of the bracket. So all I

(51:20):
know is we got one after anumber another and there's gonna be some games
in there that we don't have oura game, you know, how do
we play? This is all thelearning experience. We have to be ready
when we go to Detroit to getthat game. We have to win that
basketball game. Jeremy Schultz doubled upsays, what are some of the pride?
What are some points of pride thatyou reference when you're out recruiting about

(51:42):
Oakland. Well, I think itall depends, honestly, in recruiting on
who the kid is and what dothey want and what's his background? Who
does he have parents? Does henot have parents? Does he have a
mother? Is it his grandmother? Is his mother? I tell you,
I'll tell you a story that willow your mind. We had a player
here, Martes Walker, all right, and uh, we're getting ready to

(52:07):
go to Spain. Ten years twelveyears ago we went to Spain for the
summer like we did this year, and uh, my director of operations told
Martes, you've got to, youknow, to get your passport. I
need this. I need your mother'sbirthdate, I need this, I need
this, and I need your mother'sthis and everything. And she comes into

(52:28):
my office and she says, uh, Martes Walker's mother's eighty eight years old.
And I go, no, andwell, that's what he wrote down,
and this is her birthdate. Andfor him, his mother was his
grandmother. You know, that's whohe grew that's where he lived, that's
who he grew up with. It. Life is so different for so many

(52:51):
of these young men that we recruitthat you as my staff for myself,
we have to analyze that and howwe're going to recruit that young man and
what's important to that person. We'rerecruiting somebody from Byron Center right now.
Mom and dad were here in thesummer and everything. And my number one
speech to him was Oakland University's campus. Three years ago was rated the numbers

(53:15):
one safest campus in the United States. Two years ago it was rated the
number two safest campus in the UnitedStates, and last year it was rated
number three. Now, I don'tknow what we've done to go from one
to three, but even three ispretty damn good, right, So that
resonated with them. So we haveto just figure that out. Obviously,

(53:35):
five pros. Unfortunately in this dayand age, so most kids want to
know can you make them a pro? If I came into your home and
sat down with you and you hada son that was really good, or
some of you a grandson. Thefirst question that I used to be asked

(53:59):
is can you make me pro?Well, we got five NBA players in
the last fifteen years, so that'san easy answer for me. The next
question is can we go to theunca tournament. Well, we've gone to
the NCAA tournament three times now.I haven't been there in a little bit,
but I'm not telling them that threetimes, right, So yeah,
we going to the NCAA tournament. Can you win a national championship? Oh?

(54:20):
Sure, with you with you weekendsomething like that. I mean what
I say is Butler was in theHorizon League and they went to the national
championship game back to back here,so sure we can win it from the
Horizon League. All right. Thenthey ask us about the facilities, and
I kind of change the subject. Now when I go in, they ask

(54:43):
one question. Anybody guess what thatis? How much money are you gonna
pay me? So it's just changed. So it is what it is right
now. Well, if you cometo Oakland, we're gonna make you so
good that you you're gonna make alot of money. So why do you
want money now, Well, you'renot gonna All you're gonna do is spend
it. Anyways, Let's get itwhere you can make money for a living,

(55:06):
and that that's how we sell it. So again, we have a
great campus. Our game day isout of this world giz and as people
do such an unbelievable job. Thearena looks so good on TV, our
student sections so good. Behind thescenes, behind the scenes a little shaky,
but when you walk into that arenaon game day, that's as good
as mid major college basketball as thereis. So we try and get them

(55:29):
to come to games like tomorrow night. We've got our top two, uh,
our top one for sure, I'mnot sure if the second one's coming.
Are gonna be at the game tomorrownight, and they're the not this
year's recruits, but the two yearsout recruits are gonna be at the game
tomorrow night because we want to bringthem in on game day. And I
think if you talk to our othercoaches of the other sports One of the

(55:50):
things that I think we do agood job of in the basketball program is
we help them because you know, the soccers, if they're gonna bring a
guy in, he's gonna bring themto a game because they're going to see
that student section and they're going tosee the soccer team going crazy and the
swimmers in there whatever they're wearing, you know, and all that kind of
stuff, so or not wearing ornot wearing right, So that's what we

(56:12):
sell, all right, camp Ineed just one minute on each of these.
We got two left, Gary Gilbert, so many new faces. I
know there's five non league games aheadon your schedule, but are you already
explaining the importance of that November twentyninth game and that on the road and
that musty old Callahan Hall. Thoseare Gary's words, not mine, not
coach Campy, those are Gary's words. Well, if Gary were to ask

(56:32):
our players that they would be gettingtexts from me for three months now that
we have eighty one days before wego to Detroit, we have sixty five
days before we go to Detroit andpractice. When practice ends, they hear,
yeah, it didn't go real.Well, we didn't do this,
but we have to be really goodon that date. So the answers yes.
In less than a minute, theanswer was yes. All right.

(56:52):
Giovanni says, how much a lastyear's game versus Buwling Green can you take
into this year's game? Both youand BG have so many new people that
stuff's kind of gone on the window. Now. Has they got a new
coach? It's yeah, Well,I mean we're trying to figure out what
they're going to do against our zone. We're going back and look at a
Southern Utah film and things like that, so we have no idea what they're
going to do. But we gotto take care of ourselves, you know,

(57:14):
We'll just we'll go out there andplay, all right. Well,
as we talked about Bowling Green tomorrowin the arena, if you haven't yet,
go to Golden Grizzlies dot com getyour tickets. Love to see you
out there for the home opener. But Camp Bowling Green, moving ahead to
the weekend the tournament in the CaymanIslands, says well, no, Greg
camp be show next next Monday, because obviously we'll be down in the down
in the Cayman Islands. Eighty fivedegree weather, seven mile Island. Yeah,

(57:37):
but the wind show is like eightyfour Yeah, clearest water in the
country or the world, maybe, yep, damn. And I'll be in
the film room me too. Yeah, I bet I'm not in taking my
clubs, not even taking Oh that'show that's how serious it is. We're

(58:00):
there to work, but the peopleare going with us are going to have
a great time. We're going toplay an unbelievable schedule. Getting a chance
to play Drake right out of thegate is going to be awesome for us.
I'm gonna find out a lot aboutour team, and then we come
back and get ready for Detroit tomorrowcamp another season opens up at the Arena
Bowling Green. I know it's youknow, it's a pretty special day for

(58:22):
you when you get a chance tocoach against Bowling Green. I'm sure,
yeah, I mean, I'm kindof over it. We've played them enough,
you know. I don't like thefact that they've won the last couple
on the last second shots and wemissed the layup at their place two years
ago, and then Rocket missed thethree at the Buzzer last year, and
you know, it's been too tight. I don't like that, no matter

(58:42):
who it is, but it probablyeven means more because it's them. But
you know, most of the peopleI played with, the people that watch
me player aren't probably aren't alive anymore, so I don't know if they even
remember me down there. You know, it's it's a long time ago.
Absolutely all right, camp got aboutthirty second, left, got anything else.
I just want to thank everybody forbeing here. I hope the season

(59:04):
fries where as advertised. If you'venever had them before, you know this
show, yes, yes, lotsof love for the season frize here at
RJS. You know RJ's both himand his son are big supporters of Oakland,
So support this place if you can. Monday nights like this are great.
We want you coming every time.Feel free to ask any question you

(59:24):
want. I'll never lie to you. I'll tell you what I think,
even though sometimes it's not very smarton what I have to say, but
is what it is. Thank youso much. Absolutely, Game tomorrow on
ESPN Plus on the radio side twelveseventy am. The bet Also pregame show
is on at six thirty, sothat will do it for this episode of
the Greg can't be showed live fromRJ's Pub in Rochester Hills. Thanks everybody
