See. It's time for the GregCampy Show, presented by r j's Pub.
Let's go live to r j's Pubin Rochester Hills. Here's Coach Campy
and the voice of the Golden GrizzliesNeil Rule. What is going on?
But welcome back to another episode ofthe Greg and Campy Show. We're live
at r j's Pub in Rochester Hills. He is a coach, Greg Campy.

(00:20):
My name is Neil Rule. Happyto have you with us. Remember
you can get your thoughts and questionsfor coach on Twitter with the hashtag ask
Campy camp how you doing doing great? I mean coming off a win over
a state school, you know thatthose are the ones you got to win,
and we did it, you know, especially on the road. And

(00:43):
we don't play Western or Central thisyear, so you know, we've got
Detroit one more time and we've gotMichigan State. So we've got two more
games against the you know, peoplethat we share the community with and the
media with and everything, and thoseare must wins. We have a chance
to get two more. I hopeabsolutely is the scenario. And remember the
Greg Campy Show has brought you bythe Henry Ford Sports Medicine, the official

(01:06):
team physicians for Oak University and you. For more info, visit Henry Ford
dot com. Backslash athlete well camp, I guess we'll kind of work backwards
right Friday night, Golden Grizzlies atEastern Michigan. I had the three point
halftime lead, then closed the closeddown the club as I like to say,
they're in the second half of thegame, and won that one going
away. What was your take outthere in ipsil Anti. I don't remember

(01:27):
the days of closing clubs down,so by now I think they closed like
a two or four in the morning, right, I'm asleep. Yeah,
you know, I was really disappointedin the in the first half at the
way we closed the half after someof the issues that we've had a couple

(01:48):
of games prior to that, andyou know, it was something that we
really stressed going into the Eastern gamethat we have to close the half.
We had a long talk about thefour there's four ten four segments of the
games that you really break down toyou. You know, there's the opening
for opening four or five possessions, the last four or five possessions of the
half, and the opening of thesecond half. And obviously the final,

(02:09):
and you can emphasize all you want, but the final is always the most
important, you know, in thelast four minutes of the game. But
I in my mind, the endingthe half is probably the second most important,
and the third most is the youknow, start of the second half,
and then obviously the beginning of thegame is important, but it's not

(02:30):
anywhere near as important as the restof the stuff. So having we talked
and we've gone over that and everything, and then we you know, we
talked at the under four time outabout closing the half and we just didn't
do it. We had an elevenor twelve point lead and we ended up
leading by three at halftime. Andthe player that, you know, we
our whole defensive game plan was aroundtheir point guard, A Cuff who's I

(02:51):
think fifth or sixth in the nationand scoring, and he didn't have a
field goal with thirty seconds to goin the half, and we knew what
they were going to do, andthey did it and he made a three
ton they have to cut it tothree, and I was not happy,
and they found that out at halftime. We have eight guys that are new
this year and they hadn't seen thatbefore from their coach and now the other

(03:15):
guys, they've seen it a lot, but not this year. And halftime
was not a pleasant place to bein Yipsilanti Saturday. And we came out
the second half and we got tostop and then Goki hit we got trail
layup on a set play, andthen Goki hit a three in transition,
and you know, we took itout to twenty three or twenty four points.

(03:37):
I think we got the lead.I might have substituted a little bit
too early. I'm not sure. You know, We've got a lot of
really good players, and I've gotsome guys that haven't been able to get
minutes that I want to get minutestoo, because you never know what's going
to happen. And so I triedto do it at that time, and
I think we got a little sloppydown the stretch. I thought, you
know, we felt we had thegame won, and you never have a

(04:00):
game one, you know, hejust don't and especially when they've got a
player like a Cuff and he finallygot going. You know, I made
a couple of bombs, and reallyI think we lost our intensity. We
doubled him. We doubled him everytime he had the ball on top,
and you know, they turned itover and he struggled with that. And
then late in the game we didn'tthe doubles came late and he got some

(04:21):
shots off. So long scenario,it was really really good game for us.
We played extremely well. We playedfrom the inside out, which is,
you know, this team, we'reten games eleven games in now,
and I think we know what wehave to do to win, and from
an offensive standpoint, we have toplay from the inside out. The second
thing we have to do is wehave to control Temple. The strength of

(04:46):
our team is our defense. Ourour half court defense is record setting levels
this year as far as points perpossession and things like that. When it's
five on five and so we haveto play as much five on five defenses
we can, which means we can'tturn the ball over. We have to
play from the inside out on offense, and we have to play at a
pace. We don't want to playslow, but we're probably the top the

(05:10):
lowest thirty percent in the country andpace, and that's why we're doing it
well. Is we're playing the waywe're supposed to play. And if we
can continue to do that, playat that pace, really really guard and
rebound, we're gonna be We're gonnahave a really good chance to have a
great year. Can't put about thattoo, because I've learned a lot being
around this program, because you see, you see in other games as well,

(05:31):
that last minute, that last minuteand a half of the first half,
it's so big, like when you'rein somebody else's building if you're playing
a power five for whatever reason,And maybe you can explain this to me,
because I've kind of always wondered, why, why why do teams seem
to flip the switch when they're athome in that last minute and a half.
Is it something that they cognitively do? I mean, how does that

(05:54):
work? Or is that just goI don't know if I'm really smart enough
to answer that, because we wereat home against against Fort Wayne and we
didn't flip the switch. We actuallylet them flip the switch. And one
of our issues with our team thisyear is I don't have Jalen Moore just
walked in, he's going to beyour guest. I don't have a Jalen
Moore this year that in a twofor one situation can go get us a

(06:15):
basket can just fly by everybody andget it. You know, if Blake
gets healthy, he might be theguy that you know, we might,
you know, try and run himdown with the ball, maybe ballscreen form
and let him elevate. But attwo for one situation, we've really blown
that all year and it seems likewhen we take a bad shot or don't
get what we want, they comedown and make a three. It's happened

(06:38):
like three times. And the momentumthat changes in a game when you run
into the locker room on a high, especially if you start the next half
with the ball. You know,a lot of times we don't get the
tips, so we have the ballto start the second half. So if
we can get a two for onein the last forty five seconds, we
get actual three for one. Youknow, we get three possession as we

(07:00):
get the two there and then thepossession to start to have and you can
in a three for one situation thatcan be a six to nine point swing,
which is huge in a college basketballgame. So what we've actually decided
before the Eastern game is we're goingto go away from the two for one
right now. We're just going toplay out and We did that against Eastern
but we didn't well we did scoretalentsend scored, but they made that three.

(07:24):
So you know, I don't know. Every year it's different. You
want to do things similar, butyour personnel is different. And without a
point guard that you know, wewere hoping Rocket could be that guy,
but he's really not somebody that canblow by, you know, in transition
because he's not really a true pointguard and a skill all handling skills.
He doesn't believe himself that he canget to the rim. He wants to

(07:46):
shoot floaters and that. So youknow that that we've just got to get
used to not having that camp. Also to Jack Goal, who you're texting,
Who you're texting, I'm talking withsome in the crowd to make sure
the audil level is okay. I'mengineering tootngineer. He had something going on
the side. I don't know.Ye I would say making a wager,

(08:09):
but you're not allowed to do that, correct, So you know, like
that's I don't know if you sawon the TV or something a game that
I should bet that or something.I know, so, uh, you
know, I was just texting withsome people in the crowd to make sure
they can hear Okay Camp, Soso that that was it was the answer.
Yes, yeah, it was.Yeah, we're just we're getting that
figured out. But no, Camp, you talked about Jack Golkie, and

(08:33):
you know, we've talked about thisto some degree earlier in the season on
a couple of the shows. Butthat ability when things get moving downhill for
us, Jack Golkie he makes thatbig three, it really changes the dynamic
of a basketball game. How he'llhe'll knock down two and three possessions.
We've seen Blake Lampman do that before. To that three point shot, that

(08:54):
two three point shot, that threethree point shot in a quick stretch,
flips everything, does it well, sure it does. But one of the
things that getting Blake back does isit makes Jack's life. You know,
those two guys on the floor atthe same time, change each change it
for each other. You know,Golkie's a better player when Blake's on the

(09:16):
floor, and Blake's a better playerwhen Jack's on the floor because they can
play off each other. And nowyou've got defensively with Townsend and Conway,
you've got decisions to make. Andthen what people are finding out is if
they leave Isaiah Jones, He's gonnaget a rebound and a putback. You
know, Isaiah's Isaiah's doing really really, He's kind of the surprised piece of

(09:37):
the year when we got him.You know, I wanted him because of
his body, his physical appearance, and because we need more people that look
like him and are athletic like that. I did not know that he would
turn into the player that he didthis quick. I mean, I think
he's you know, he's the thehidden gem for our team. He's the

(10:01):
guy that makes it go because he'sjust that guy that is you know,
you look at his at his boxscore after every game he's shooting sixty three
percent from the floor because he's takingsixty three percent shots. Actually he's taken
better. He's missed a couple oflayups, but you know, he's getting
shots that you can make. Hegets key multiple offensive rebounds in every game.

(10:24):
He keeps possessions alive. He's verygood defensively at the top of his
own. More importantly, like EasternMichigan, we miss an easy shot,
looks like they've got the rebound andthey're coming down. Somehow he gets his
hand on it, tips it away. We pick it up and score a
life that's happened in three or fourdifferent games. He makes those game winning
plays. So when you can puta guy like that out there with guys

(10:46):
that can score like Trey and Chris, how Chris has grown in the post
and can score, that makes thoseshooters' lives easy. So we need both
Blake and Jack on the floor. They'll play off each other and one game
Jack will make the six of themand one game Blake will make you know,
four or five of six of them. And then there's going to be

(11:07):
a game this year where they bothdo it right and then we'll look like
Fort Wayne looked against us that day. But that's that's going to happen in
a game this year. I hopeit happens in the Breslyn Center next week,
you know, time for it.Yeah, we will not be beaten
on that night. And uh,you know so it's just good to see
you know, Blake back in therewith them and getting all our pieces back

(11:28):
as we get ready for you know, Christmas in the league play, having
everybody up and playing. So twomore non Horizon League games before we step
into the Horizon League season between Christmasand New years. That does wrap up
the competition with the MAC. GoldenGrizzlies two and one against the MAC Conference
this year. You know, justkind of your thoughts. We're two in
a question mark, two in aquestion mark. Yep. I can't.

(11:52):
I can't say much more. Idon't want to know, and I'm not
asking. I like my money,I want to keep it. Let's talk.
Let's just talk about that, theseries with the MAC and the performance
against the MAC this year. Ivery pleased with it. I think our
league has had a good year againstthe MAC. You know's that's kind of
the league that we're compared to,especially in recruiting. You know, the
Toledo game is a big game. The Eastern games are big games because those

(12:13):
are the teams we recruit against. And so you know, Youngstown had a
big win at Ohio this week.Northern Kentucky lost by one like we did
at home to Accron. So youknow, it's it's it's our league is
really faring out well this year, and it looks, you know, the
top of our league is very strong, and that's good. That's really good
because the league champions should get abetter seed in the tournament than we have

(12:37):
the last couple of years have youbeen on the process. And I know
I know the answer to this, but I'm asking you the question for the
people here. How much how closelydo you keep tabs on the Horizon League
teams as the non conference season playsout? I watch, I probably watch
every game that's played, you know, if it's on ESPN plus if they're

(12:58):
playing somewhere where that's not on thenetwork, obviously I don't see it,
and I can get video of itwhen I want. I don't. I
don't do that that much, youknow, but no, I'll sit there.
So, yes, Saturday, Ithink there were four League games.
I've watched all of them, youknow, not not while they're being played,

(13:18):
but the good part of watching themwhen the game's over is that you
can you don't have to watch thecommercials. And the damn commercials are the
same thing every time. I mean, you watch Right States and you get
tired of hearing the same person fromRight States saying them they're how great they're
campus you know what I mean.So you can blow through those commercials and

(13:39):
just watch the games and get throughthem. So, you know, I
watch them all. It's all partof preparation though, you know, we
want to be prepared for everything thereis when we play those league games,
and then very last one here beforewe cut to the break and we will
talk to Jalen Moore who is inthe house in just a couple of minutes.
But Tray obviously against Eastern nine fortwelve from the floor and you knew
that, right, camp. Imean, that's how he's built. Well.

(14:01):
We one of the things that's happeningthis year, and part of it
is the is the competition has beenso difficult. But also I think,
you know, Tray's fourth year,he's got something to prove. You know,
he wants to play at the nextlevel. You know, he once
get drafted. He wants to playin the NBA like they all do.

(14:22):
And he's got a chance to showagainst some great teams and he has.
But one of the things I thinkhas started to happen for him not that
he's taking bad shots, because wewant him to take shots, and you
know, we run a lot ofplays to him. You know, there's
a lot of there's a lot ofplaces that you know they don't do that

(14:43):
kind of thing, but we do. You know, we get him the
ball we run a lot of sets. If you hear during the game,
you hear the bench calling out thesets, and that many, you know,
of the sixty five sets that wehave in probably thirty to thirty five
of them go through him. Andwhat's happening is that he started those games
to you know, they're tougher. You know, we're playing against bigger,
stronger guys, and when we getin our league, that won't be quite

(15:07):
that he'll have to play more througha double teams and not through our league.
But we've turned it into that littlefade away and you know that fadeaway
is not going to go in asmuch as when he plays right through somebody's
nose. And so a shooting percentageis not anywhere near where I feel it
should be. It's in the lowforties. And he's been a mid fifties
to sixties shooter his whole career.Well, he was nine for twelve on

(15:31):
Friday night because he went through theirnose. You know, he did not
in the I forget which game itwas, maybe Toledo. He got a
couple offensive files called, which youknow you're going to have some calls go
against you, and and so hewent back to that fade away and he'll
make it sure. I mean,he made a huge one against Xavier,
but that's not the shot we needhim to shooting. We need him going

(15:52):
through people. Getting to the freethrow line. One of the things again
with Jalen not being here this year, one of the things that I think
is hurting us as you look, what do we got to get better at.
We're not getting to the free throwline anywhere near now. Jalen used
to get there eight nine times agame. But still, you know,
Trey needs to get there six seventimes a game. We need to get
to the line more and we needto do that and he needs to do

(16:17):
that. And you know, Ithink that he took a big step forward
in getting back to playing that wayagainst Eastern Michigan and he had twenty two
points on nine to twelve from thefloor. And he needs to be you
know, an average night for himneeds to be seven and a half or
twelve eight for twelve, right, that needs to be an average night for
him. A great night needs tobe nine or ten of twelve. And

(16:41):
he's going to get more shots thanthat. It's not that he's getting twelve
shots. We want him to getsixteen to twenty shots, but five to
six those shots shouldn't count because he'sbeing fouled. If that makes sense,
No, absolutely it does. We'lltake our first break and when we come
back as promised, we'll be joinedby Jalen More. You are listening to

back to the Greg Campy Show. We're live at our Jay's Pub in Rochester

(19:14):
Hills and coach Greg Campy. Myname is Neil rul Right now, as
promised, we're joined by one ofthe best in a long lineage of great
point guards. This guy certainly madehis claim at the position as well.
Jamo is back in the house.Jalen Moore is here. Everybody. Jamo,
We're back at it man. We'reback at it like we never left,
like we never left. I loveit, man. But uh look,

(19:36):
you know you got your pro careergoing on and everything like that.
What brings what brings you back inhere tonight? First off, you know,
I want to give Michael doolences toyou know, John Lee and his
family. You know, he passedaway and that's the main reason why I'm
here to attend his funeral and youknow, show my respect to him.
You know, he's been a fatherfigure in my life and done a lot
for me, and you know wehave a special bond that I don't think
a lot of people understand how closewe are. So you know that's why

(19:59):
I'm b could sound and you know, I get to see everybody here,
and it's just a good feeling tosee everybody. I know. I saw
your rolling with Blake Lamb and Lamps. You know, lamps is uh.
He's got a dressed up tonight too, man. So good to see Blake
out here. Good to see youback in town. Jmo as well and
very very well, said my friend, very very well said. Did a
lot for the Oakland community, noquestion about that. But as we talked

(20:21):
about your pro careers going on,you guys get a little bit of a
holiday break. I understand they letthey let you cut that a game short
to come back here to be herenow, but you know you're overseas.
Just break it down for us,man, how's it going. I see
the numbers, The numbers look likeit's going all right. Yeah, it's
going pretty good. I'm blessed tobe in the position I am. And
you know I got to give allthe thanks to you know, coach Campy

(20:42):
for allowing me to he put mein that position to you know, go
out on the court and show whatI can do. Every night on the
court, and you know it's translatingover to the pros. So you know,
it's a journey, it's a steppingstone, it's a marathon. And
you know, I'm just I'm blessedand happy to be on Matt today.
You know, Jimo, wouldn't Iremember just first meeting, you know,
when you first got here to Oakland, you you were, you were steadfast

(21:04):
about that. So I'm gonna bea professional player. I'm gonna be a
professional player. I'm gonna be aprofessional player. You never you never wavered
in that. And look, Iknow you, I know how you operate
your very business like. You don'tget caught up a lot, which which
I've kind of always admired because that'snot the tone necessarily of of you know,
today's today's athlete. But you know, as you do, you ever

(21:26):
get a chance to look back atit, Jimo, do you ever do
you ever say, hey, thisthis is what I set out to do.
It. Look, you said ityourself, like this is a stepping
stone. You're not where you ultimatelywant to be. But do you do
you take a step back and sayI did do what I set out to
do? Yeah? For sure.I think along the journey, you know,
it's gonna be ups and downs, and you definitely got to step back
to appreciate where you're at today, you know what I mean, Because you

(21:48):
work your whole life towards something, and you know your commis a little goal.
You know, you got to applaudyourself and you know, congratulate yourself.
But you know, like you said, it's a stepping stone, so
long way to go, and youknow, I think I'm on the right
path. Other than the quote speedof the game, what's the biggest transition
to to playing professional basketball, especiallyoverseas Because I don't know if people know

(22:10):
this or not, Like it's notfor everybody, not everybody can deal with
it. The biggest transition is probablyphysicality. It's very physical over there,
and they don't call a lot offouls. So I'm not getting to the
free throw line as much as Iwas here, but I'm still getting to
the free throw line. But yeah, the ress, they they let a
lot of handcheck going on, alot of pushing, a lot of shoving.

(22:30):
Yeah, So I mean that's that'sthe biggest thing that's you know,
been a little challenging for me.But I feel like I can adjust and
adapt to anything really, So Ifeel like I've been adapting pretty good and
I just got to keep going. It's a different plan for money, like
in the pros because everyone, Imean, but when they're grabbing you and

(22:51):
stuff like that, like they're tryingto eat too, you know what,
I'm sure like that's that's the motivationfor sure. Yeah, it's definitely different.
It's just different too, Like Ireally get paid to play the game
that I love. Yeah, youknow, and that's what I appreciate the
most because, like I said,I worked my whole life for this opportunity
and it's just pretty cool because youknow, I get to wake up in
the morning, go to practice.I get paid to do it, so

(23:18):
I can't complain. Yeah, no, absolutely. So what was that process
like for you, Jimo, Becausewhen last a lot of people saw you
was kind of stepping off the courtfor the final time here for the Golden
Grizzlies and they see, you know, you pop up you're playing pro overseas.
What was it like for that dayyou took your last step you know,
on the court for Oakland University totoday, what was that process like

(23:38):
just appreciative, just grateful. Idefinitely miss it. I text Blake all
the time. I text coach can'tbe too you know, I wish I
could be on this team because Isee how great this team can be.
They have a potential to be really, really special. They have all the
pieces that they need. Just youknow, I think the more they play

(23:59):
together, the more that they're they'regoing to get better every day. But
you know, the process has justbeen I think, just trying to find
somebody who would take a chance andtake an opportunity on me, just like
Coach camp you did at Oakland, and I think down to Iceland, they
took opportunity on me, and Idon't think they regret it. No,

(24:22):
absolutely not. I'm sure. I'msure they don't. Iceland. I always
hear about it. They say it'sincredible. Tell us about Iceland. Man,
It's very beautiful. There's a lotof places you can go. The
most popular is the Blue Lagoon.I'm pretty sure everybody's probably heard of that
I've been to it. It's thewater is like ninety eight degrees, it's
blue, it's beautiful. There's somebeautiful spots and it's not as cold as

(24:47):
people think it is. Really it'sactually probably colder here right now, but
just the wind down there is crazy, like the wind be like forty miles
an hour, so it feels reallyreally cold, but it's beautif I like
it. I'm grateful, like Isaid, and it's a stepping stone,
and I got to just be appreciativeof the time I get there. Tell
them with Jalen Moore here on theGreg Campy Show. We're live at RJ's

(25:10):

somebody said, once they saw youwere going to be on, they had
a question for Campy, and I'mgonna ask Campy when we get to that
segment next, but I want toask you it as well. Hargen b
says appropriate for tonight's guest, whichJalen Moore performance sticks out to you as

(25:56):
the all time classic for you?So, Jalen, I'll ask you that
question what performance sticks out to youbecause there's a ton to choose from.
I wouldn't say a performance really becauseI'm not the type who gets into the
individual stuff. Yeah, it's cool, But I would say when we beat
Oklahoma State at Olkahoma State, thatwas just a really good feeling, you

(26:18):
know after in the locker room, how everybody was just so happy. It's
a special moment. And I knowthat the team felt that same way when
they'd be exavier this year. Sojust watching that game, I just brought
back memories. Yeah, so Iwould say that's probably my favorite memory.
I wouldn't say no individual thing. Can I say an individual thing? Yeah?

(26:40):
Go ahead, down in Florida thetournament last year, Big three at
the end of the game, comeon, I'm probably I'm probably the most
clutch persons came through being honest tailingmore. Our guest here. How close
you keeping up tabs? I mean, I know the answer to that,
but you know, how do youdo that? Balance? But you're doing
how do you tap into Oakland basketball? Still? I watched every single game,

(27:06):
that's I mean, I just Ijust love it. I miss I
just miss everybody here. I missbeing around everybody. I miss the daily
routines that I had here. Youknow, it's just a lot of people
don't realize it what they have untilit's gone, you know what I mean.
Yeah, I wouldn't say that. That's not the case with me,
but you definitely take that into perspectivemore when you're gone, just like you

(27:26):
know, you miss it, right. But yeah, my sleep schedule down
there is terrible. It's all Ihaven't adjusted. So they're five hours ahead,
right. Most of the games comeon I think at twelve pm or
one am. Yeah, you know, I stay up and watch the whole
game. So, jilln how's afamily doing. Man, everybody's good.

(27:47):
Everybody's good, everybody's happy, everybody'shealthy. So you know, no complaints
there. Yeah, absolutely, Well, I'm happy that we got a chance
to talk to you. You know, you're my guy man always. Yeah,
no doubt appreciate you coming on theshow and everything like that. Give
it for Jalen Moore, everybody,Jamos in the house, everybody, We'll

Camp You ready for the Askcampy portion? Sure? Absolutely, let's get in

(30:49):
to it. We missed this onefrom last week, so I have to
do this. Captain Brush oh threewants to know, Askcampy, what's your
favorite Long John Silver's order? Ithink know Long John Silvers was still with
us, but I guess they are. I've never been, all right,
I've seen it, but I've neverbeen. Why would I want fish in
a fast food place? I don'tnever had the filet o fish either at

(31:12):
the McDonald's or any of those,so I'm not a fish guy. The
people wanted to know. I wonderif their fries are any good though,
you know, I'd like to knowthat. Maybe he could tell us if
they're good, are crinkled or arethey curly? I don't, I don't
know, my said Captain Brush.Oh three, if you're out there listening
right now, let us know.Has anybody in here ever eaten into Long
John silvers? We got a cup, we got some hands going up there.

(31:34):
Are the fries any good? Oh? Yeah? Are they crinkled or
are they regular? Okay, I'veseen the commercials, all right, Pittsburgh,
Marty in the house as well,uh, says Camp. In these
ten days between Eastern Michigan and MichiganState, I know you said that you

(31:55):
give the players some time off duringfinal exams. We're they're two major,
two or three major projects that thecoaching staff is working on during this time
period. Well, are there onthe road? I mean that Saturday they
all took off and this was achance. You know, between the first
week of November and the first weekof March, there's very seldom is there

(32:16):
a weekend that we're not playing. And it was funny because I called Stan
Heath, or Stan Heath called meto schedule the game this weekend and our
year ago, and he goes, you know, we were talking about dates,
and I said Saturday the ninth, and he goes, okay, let's
play Saturday the ninth. I go, Stan, it's my birthday, man,

(32:38):
I'd had to have to beat onmy birthday. And he goes,
We're not playing on your birthday.Let's plan Friday the eighth. And so
we did it, and then weboth talked about it Friday night. Is
we get a weekend? You know? So our guys, my staff left
Saturday morning and they flew out todifferent places and saw, you know,

(32:58):
especially in this day and age ofrecruiting the junior colleges, we got to
see, you know, a bunchof JC games. Bobby's still on the
road. He missed, practiced today. I think he came back tonight.
And Smitty got back late last nightand was at practice this morning.
So you know, we we tookadvantage of that weekend and recruiting and getting
to see kids that we've recruited, you know, been recruiting hard for next

(33:21):
year, and that's really the bigthing me personally. I'm just looking at
all how we've we've put in thisnew set. In the last couple of
games, we're trying to jam theball into the into the box, into
tray and into uh Beru and Chrisand I was just, you know,

(33:42):
our film guy got me every possessionof what we've done in it, and
then how it's being guarded so thatwe can come up with some counters on
if they're guarding it this way, this is what we're going to do.
We'll put those counters in this weekbefore Michigan State. So those are the
projects that we look at Giovanni much. Sherry wants to know coach thinking about
the Pistons and they're long losing streak. What do you do as a coach
to break a losing streak? Maybenot a twenty game losing streak, but

(34:04):
in general, well, I don'treally know if there's anything the coach can
do about it. You know, you got to get maybe go get better
players. That'd be one thing todo. And I'm sure that's what's going
through their minds right now, iswe got to get better players, but
they've got to play another sixty orseventy games or fifty games or whatever this
year, so they've got to figuresomething else. And all you can really

(34:27):
do there is you got to staypositive anything negative at that time. You
know, we started during the Ithink it was during the the pandemic when
we didn't get to practice before weplayed, and then all of a sudden
we played games. I think westarted zero to nine that year. And
what we just tried to do iswe tried to stay positive. Just you

(34:49):
know, we're getting better. Youknow, everything we want in the season
is going to become in March. We've just got to keep getting better so
that we're good in Marching. Andby the way, we did get the
league championship game that year. Andyou know, I think stay positive,
you know, build figure out whatyour team can do. And again it
goes back to that, you know, work at what you can do,

(35:10):
not so much at what you can'tdo, and get better at what you
can do so you can win somegames. Get your questions in on Twitter
with the hashtag ask Campy at edkick eighty eleven, says camp on a
scale of one to ten, howhard is it to get a school other
than MAC teams to play at thearena. I remember back in the day,
Texas A and m Tennessee, Missouriall used to come play us at
home. Over the years, andyou guys have done about as well as

(35:32):
you can, you know, withthe Georgia's and the Oklahoma States and things
like that recently. One of thethings that's hurt us on that is that
the Detroit area of basketball is youknow, a lot of the great players
they leave, and so one ofthe ways, like we got Georgia back
here because of Yonte Mayden was playedat West Bloomfield or not West Bloomfield,

(35:57):
No Bloomfield Hills Ossir. That doesn'texist anymore. It's just Bloomfield Hills High
now. And so when they goand they play at a power five,
you know, I would call.I would anytime a good player from the
area would go to a power five, I would call there and say,
let's do it two for one.I'll come to your place twice because that
way you can come home and youcan play in front of you know,
that kick can play in front ofhis family and to help you recruit here.

(36:21):
But there aren't really that many playerslately that have done that, and
then it's you know, nobody's goingto come here. We had won three
until Oklahoma State beat this last year. We had won three or four in
a row of those games. It'sit's just really hard to get. Uh.
You got to find a school thatmight, you know, maybe maybe
financially, a power five school that'sat the bottom of the financial level and

(36:43):
is willing to do something like that. But you the chances of you seeing
a power five school in our buildingagain is probably very sliml Yeah, yeah,
yeah, let's see what else wegot here again. Tweet your question
with the hashtag ask Campy. BK McDonald wants to know camp are the
Christmas sweaters returning for Monday's game oris is it feeling a little more grouchy

(37:05):
this year? No? I didnot, you know. I after they
lost last night down in distance right, yeah, exactly know the room right
know the crowd after they lost lastnight, somebody ripped him and they put
a picture of him up there andhe was in that elf sweater. And
there's no way I would even callhim on the phone right now and bring

(37:28):
that up. So you know, they're trying to write their ship right now,
and I'm sure they will, youknow, I just hope that it's
it's not at our you know, our night, you know, and no,
we'll just we'll be dressed in regularapparel this year. All right,
Big J Plays wants to ask camp, are there any fun traditions you guys
do for Christmas as a team?Feel like a white elephant or a secret

(37:50):
Santa gift exchange streamed at RJ's wouldbe pretty cool. No, yeah,
we've you know, I know that. You know, I've watched our women's
program do things like that over theyears, and when I see it,
I always say, eh, youknow, maybe, but never really did.
The only year the COVID year, you know, when nobody could go
anywhere and everything, I had themall over to my house and then a
couple guys got COVID, so thatended that. But now we what we

(38:15):
try and do is we you know, we get a lot of Nike apparels.
So when they come back from Christmas, we like to put something Nike
hanging in their locker room or intheir locker in the locker room that's maybe
a little bit different than the normalapparel that they get. Maybe a pair
of shoes that they like or something. Colin really takes care of that for
me. He just he comes upwith something cool. And so when they

(38:37):
get back, they walk because they'renot real happy when they come back because
we normally practice on Christmas, andyou know, so it's not you know,
I feel worse for our trainer andour strength coaching people like that because
you know they don't get a Christmasoff. But I mean, I've signed
up for that. You know, that's part of my job. But you

(38:57):
know, especially now that the leagueplays those league games, and you know,
we play what the twenty seventh, right leave the twenty seventh, I
want to say, playing the twentyeighth in New Year's Eve. Yeah,
so we play the twenty eighth,So you're gonna you gotta practice on the
twenty fifth, right, right,And so it's just it's not nobody wants
to be there on Christmas Day,So we got to do something to make
them smile a little bit when theyget in Horizon. Matt Campy, your

(39:21):
team this year is one and ohwhen Neil rule is not present, have
you considered asking him to no longerattend your games? We put that out
immediately after the game, I textto the notes. No. I texted
Steve Waterfield that you know, wegot a street going without Neil and we
probably should keep that thing going untilwe lose. But I haven't heard back

(39:42):
from Steve, so you have yougot some time to talk to him,
you might have a chance. Shoutout to Jonathan Turner, by the way,
doing a great job of filling infor that at BET's underscore. Make
wants to know, Camp, whatdid you learn from having Jamal Kane at
Oakland? Did any of the Marquettetoughness rub off on the other players?
I'll call that Pontiac toughness before Marquettetoughness. I'm guessing this guy's a Marquette

(40:04):
fan. Maybe. Yeah, JamalKaines one of was one of the nicest
young men that I ever coached. But we've known Jamal. My assistant coach,
Mike Covington was his high school coach. I mean, I've known Jamal
since he was fourteen fifteen years old. And you know, sure, if

(40:25):
you're a Marquette fan, Marquet's beenpretty good, then sure the rubbed off.
Thanks. We're here every Monday atsix o'clock. Yeah, we really
appreciate you know, if you gotsome more of those guys to send us,
send them because we like him.He averaged twenty six a game or
twenty one a game and eleven reboundsfor us. I think it was nine
and five for you. So youknow you got some other guys there that

(40:45):
want to increase their stats, sendthem our way. What else do we
have here at Big j Plays,It says, hey coach, tuning in
again from the three zero five. The guy from Miami that was listening to
last show down in Miami. Itried the diet doctor pepper you recommended last
week. It did not tickle myfancy as I would have hoped. However,

(41:06):
I did try the cherry vanilla doctorpepper and it quote knocked my socks
off. Would you would recommend itif you haven't tried it yet? Oh?
When was the last time you've heardsomebody say, quote knocked my socks
off? I can't answer that. That's interesting. I well, you know,

(41:27):
I'm glad that he tried something thathe really likes, and send him
a pair of doctor Pepper socks.I guess I don't know what did vanilla
doctor pepper. I think that I'vetried it. Question. I've tried it.
I've tried every one of them, and you know, I'm just I'm
a loyal guy. Man. It'sright here. Let's see here question still
flying in here with the Ask Campyportion of the show at Lakers twenty four,

(41:52):
Andrew says, ask Campy, whatdo you see in Dayton? Is
there any potential challenges that they maybring to you? Yeah, I'm really
really interested to see our date andgame because you know, if you were
to you know, we've played elevengames, and as a coaching staff,
you evaluate, we I pay somebodyto scout us, you know, so

(42:13):
we get a self scout, andit's really not we can do our own
self scout, but I really wantsomebody not in our staff doing a self
scout. So we we get that, and then we compare to our own
notes, like you know, likeSmitty and Bobby and Cove. What do
you think? You know, whatdo we have to do to you know?
So we do that constantly. It'sa constant self scout. And one

(42:37):
of the biggest concerns that I haveabout our basketball team is handling pressure because
again we you know, without tone, we don't have a true point guard
and even with him, we've neverseen Tone. I mean we've seen him,
but we've never seen him because youknow, within a week of practice
started, he hurt his knee badlyand we lost him for or eight eight

(43:00):
weeks or twelve weeks. Then hecame back and he missed all that and
he's just trying to get back andstill like when when speed is your game
and you have a leg injury, you know, and then just as he's
getting back and he's starting, youknow, he played really well down in
the Cayman Islands, and you know, I'm really starting to trust him in
that he gets hurt again. Uh, but you know what I hadn't seen

(43:22):
out of him is is physicality withthe ball. Right, he's speed with
the ball, but I got tosee physicality with the Jalen had both as
slight as Jalen was. I sawWest Virginia attack Jalen and he handled it
right. So when we played Dayton, Dayton is a press, pressing team

(43:43):
and they're after every basket they make. They come after you. So I'm
really interested to see how we're goingto handle that. Now, if you're
not a pressing team and you tryand press this you're going to be in
trouble because you're allowing us to throwover the top to you, and you're
gonna have Golkian and open for openthrees. And that's why I don't think
we'll see a lot of pressing unlessyou are a pressing team. I think

(44:07):
Youngstown could hurt us with the press. I think Northern Kentucky could hurt us
with the press, and those aretwo very good teams in our league.
So we've got to be prepared forthat. And I'm going to get a
real good view of it against Daytonbecause Dayton will come after you and get
really physical with you. So that'sthat's the biggest outtake for the Dayton game
that I see get the real GideonBeers wants to know when do you guys

(44:31):
start prepping for Michigan State. Wewon't start until Thursday. We work today
on ourselves, will work tomorrow onourselves. We'll take Wednesday off and then
when we go to work on Thursday, we'll we'll start on the film work
and that on Michigan State. Iwill tell you this, Our players watch

(44:52):
Michigan State play all the time,so I think it'll be a very easy,
quick prep because they know the playersbetter than I know. They've played
against them in pickup games in thesummer and stuff like that, and you
know, it's a big game forus, So they'll be ready and they'll
they'll know and I mean Lampman.I had a fifteen minute conversation on the
phone last night at ten o'clock atnight with Lampman, and you know,

(45:15):
he had just watched their Nebraska gamelast night and he brought up a couple
of things about our zone what hethought could do and you know, on
Walker and things like that. Sothey're they're dialed in and tuned in.
It's a big game. I mean, you know, it's one that they
look forward to. Yeah, well, and we'll talk about that coming up
in the next segment and our finalone here before we get to that final

(45:36):
break of the evening. Baboon Mountainwho he was one that asked about beans
your favorite type of beans last week? I can imagine what this one's going
to be. It's a good one, he says coach. As the holidays
approach, is the team doing anyvolunteering out in the community, potentially a
canned bean drive like a food drive. I feel like this would be a
great bonding experience for the team.Go Grizzlies. Wow, we have over

(46:02):
the years, you know, COVIDhas kind of really taken a lot of
those opportunities away. We had areally good one going on where on Christmas
Eve morning we would go downtown indown Detroit and there's an event that takes
place at Pure Shed five in theEastern Market where you go in there and

(46:24):
you spend two or three hours packingturkey mashed potatoes. You know, you're
putting them in the plastic like togo things and putting them in a bag
with a bottle of water and breadand things like that, and you make
probably you know, two thousand mealsthat there's that many people that were there.

(46:46):
And then we would go in groupslike I would put three or four
guys in a car with a coachmyself and we would go out into the
community then and you knew at thattime where most of the homeless people were,
and we would go find them andhand them meals. And that was

(47:06):
a really really good one, butCOVID kind of shut that down. I
talked to those people, well,my representative who had helped me get in
there, talk to those people, and they're talking about doing it this year,
but it'll only be clothes, itwon't be food. So I'm not
sure we'll be involved because this yearwe've got you know that we got that

(47:28):
day off, so I don't wantto bring them back a day early just
for that. The last one wedid a year ago, which was a
really cool one, is it wasa very similar situation in Pontiac where we
gave we went and we handed topeople in their cars, you know,
clothes and bikes and things like that, that that the Lighthouse had put together.

(47:51):
So we were working with the lighthouse. Is that what it's called.
I hope I didn't screw that up. Yeah, I think so. I
think it was. Yeah, absolutely, all right, we'll take our final
break. When we come back. The last segment of the show, we
will talk about the Michigan State game. We will talk about the Dayton game
as well. This is the finalshow because of the Michigan State game on
the eighteenth, which is next Monday. Add seven days to that the twenty

(48:14):
fifth, which is Christmas New Year'sDay. So this is the final show
of the calendar year. But we'llfinish in style. Everybody, trust me.

He is the coach Greg Campy. My name is Neil Rule. Greg has
him back in our twelve to seventythe BET Studios, your flagship home for

(50:40):
Golden Grizzlies basketball. Natalie longroy Ihear on site as well, doing the
streaming aspect of it all. Yeah, that's right, that's right Natalie,
everybody, but again, happy tohave you all with us. As we
always like to say, the highestrated show on the station at this time,
that is The Facts. But Campbefore we get to Michigan State and

(51:00):
Dayton, they have it on theTV's up here. No, by the
way, come on out to RJ'sPub, Rochester Hills. The TV game
is on one thousand out here.I mean, it is incredible. It's
a great setup to watch all thegames all the time. Shoeo Tani seven
hundred million dollar contract. Camp crazy, just crazy. Somebody was telling me

(51:22):
that it's three hundred and fifty thousanda game, you know, one hundred
and forty two thousand and that bador something like that. It's oh yeah,
and we wonder why we got problemsin this world? Right, I
means just gotten ridiculous and out ofhand. And you know there's gonna have
to be a rollback sometime. Youknow, the bubbles gotta pop, right

(51:42):
at some point, some point.I mean, it just can't because the
people that are paying for it,or us, you know, right,
I mean, who can afford togo to a game now? I mean
and all the people out there sayinghe deserves it. If you can get
it, get it, but you'rethe one paying for it, you know.
And that's that's what. Hey,they're rolling back the off balling golf,
right, they're going to start rollingback the clubs. They're going to

(52:02):
start. It'll be interesting. I'llbe dead, but twenty years from now,
you'll probably be playing tennis with thewooden racket again or something I did.
I did read too real quickly. He is actually deferring all but two
million dollars per year, and hewill get that in a lump sum at
the end of the contract. SoI mean, it's it's crazy. They
like winning the lottery, right, yeah, absolutely, Yeah, those people

(52:27):
out there will be they'll be lookingfor him, no doubt. All Right,
Camp Michigan State, the Golden Grizzliescoming up, and there's a very
very challenging forty eight hours of basketballfor Oakland University. I would as tough
as any forty eight hour stretch reallyfor anybody in this country, Michigan State
on Monday, dating on Wednesday,we'll have a good representation of Golden Grizzlies

(52:47):
fans out there at Breslin and we'llbe giving it a go. We're also
going to have a lot of peopledating. I've had a lot of requests
for tickets and you know, II the problem is, you know,
we got to plan the road bothso we get up the next day and
we go right back down to Dayton. And that's always a challenge when you
do that. But I think thethe intensity level that you need when you

(53:09):
play Michigan State and the heightened thatour players, I mean, it's a
big game for us, it reallyis, and it's when they look forward
to every year. It's the oneday that we are on center stage in
the State of Michigan. And youknow, we've we've had a chance to
win that game on many occasions.I haven't been able to quite pull that

(53:30):
off yet. And we're going inMonday Night believing we can win. And
you know there's times we've gone inthere hoping that we just keep this thing
close and steal it at the end. But we're going in We're going in
Monday night and with the mindset thatyou know that if we if we don't
win the game, that's on us. Then obviously, as you talked about

(53:50):
to Wednesday at Dayton as well inthe Atlantic ten, I mean for people
that don't know Atlantic ten basketball, that that stuff's built differently when they do
over there. Yeah, and Daytonis you know, Dayton's the class of
that league. They sell out everygame. I think you know that's why
they hold the Dayton is a tremendousbasketball town, and that's a tremendous basketball
university. But that a building whereyou know, we're one and zero in

(54:14):
it. The only time we've everplayed in it, we beat Alabama A
and M in two thousand and fivein the NSA Tournament in that building.
So it's kind of one of mynicest memories of my coaching career at Oakland
and so to be cool to goback there, but they'll be I think
it's twelve thousand, five hundred ormaybe it's fourteen thousand, five hundred or
some number like that they hold andthey sell every game out. It's it's

(54:34):
a tremendous environment. Similar to Xavierthat was sold out, similar to to
Illinois that was sold out. Ourkids, that's motivational fact, our factor
for our players. They love that. You know, I heard Goki in
this show last week talk about silencingthe crowd, and we'll have a chance
to do that in both those gamesbecause we're playing in front of fourteen thousand
on Monday and twelve thousand on Wednesday. Camp the Michigan State game, You've

(55:00):
talked about this many many times. We'll probably touch on this on the pregame
show for the broadcast as well, the Michigan State game. Camp just when
you look at it, as conferencescontinue to expand, and you know,
there's more talk that more teams canbe added to the Big Ten. I
know it's been a fear of yoursand it's a fear really of college basketball

(55:21):
fans around here that we may seethe day where sadly the game could get
squeezed out. You know what,Tom's always Tom has always done a great
job of playing this game and wantingto play this game, and he's been
public about that. But how doyou see the future of this camp.
Well, he wants to play it, but he may not be able to.
I mean they're talking about you know, you hear the rumors of Florida
State and Miami and going to twentyteams. And what we're waiting on is

(55:46):
how many league games they're gonna play. Right now, they're at twenty.
If it goes up to twenty four, our game won't be played twenty four.
Yeah, if it goes to twentytwo, I think there's a way
that we can still play it.But if it goes to twenty four,
with the Big Ten challenge, withthe they've got to win. You know,
they've got to play some home games. You know, they can't.

(56:06):
They can't. We pay them prettygood to go to Little Caesars, but
they make a hell of a lotmore at a home game than they than
they do and what we pay them. So they've got a budget and a
nut that they have to make. And if there's twenty four league games and
there's only thirty one games and theyhave to play the Big ten, acc
or I can think that went away. But the Big ten, Big East

(56:28):
one and the Champions Class Champions thayingand all that, and you know they're
going to plan an aircraft carrying maybeon the moon next year. Who knows
they that they're always you know, cutting edge on where they play and what
they do. So I'm hoping, but you know, we've got to we've
got to understand it. This couldbe you know, the last two of

(56:49):
the games and hopefully you know,I'm pushing to contract more, but they
can't do anything until they know.I think the big ten right now is
trying to figure out their tournament forfrom what I'm hearing, and that's the
big point of contention right now isthey're going to have eighteen teams and they
can't. You can't play a tournamentwith eighteen teams in the same amount of
time that you know, So isit only going to be a fourteen team

(57:14):
tournament? What? You know,They've got to figure all that out.
Once they do, then they'll goto their league schedule and camp I would
think too. And I'm asking youthis just the cachet that the Oakland Michigan
State game carries with it because atthe Palace, the biggest basketball crowd in
the history of the Palace was MichiganOakland State at Little Caesars Arena. What

(57:36):
was who? What's Oakland and MichiganState? Yes? Yeah, did you
realize what you said? No?You said Michigan and Oakland State. Oh
did I Oh, my apologies.Who was that guy that did the game
the other day? Yeah, JonathanTurner. I'll give you his number.
But camp the biggest crowd in thehistory of Little Caesars Arena, the sister
school to Oakland State, Oakland University, and Michigan State. Again, to

(58:00):
this date, that's the largest basketballcrowd they've ever had there. I mean,
it is a it is a legitimate, big time event. Well,
I'm really interested to see what happensSaturday when they play Baylor, because I
told the people, you know,we we backed out. We were supposed
to play at Little Caesars this year, and I wish we were because I
think we'd have a much better chanceto win with this team I have on
a neutral floor, not neutral butsupposed to be our home court, but

(58:22):
call it neutral, right. ButI told the people at Little Caesars,
I said, you know, you'renot going to get the crowd you're gonna
get with us. And they're like, well, it's balor they're going to
be in the top. No,because there are Michigan State's going to bring
fourteen thousand people. That's about whatthey bring, right, and bring we
bring the other well, six toseven is what we've brought every year,

(58:43):
and that we've sold six to seventhousand. Baylor's not going to bring six
thousand people, So I'm really anxiousto see what the announce the tendancy is
Saturday and how that goes, especiallywith the Lions game being flex to that
night. They got they kind ofgot their parade rain down a little bit
with all that, so it'll beinteresting. But I'm just hoping that Little

(59:04):
Caesar sees the value of that too, that they that they oh yeah,
you were right, you know. All right, Well, that does it
for the Greg Campy Show. Appreciateeverybody coming out to RJ's Pub and Rochester
