go live to r j's Pub inRochester Hills. Here's Coach Campy and the
voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neil Rule. What is going on? But welcome
back to another episode of the GregCampy Show. We're live at r J's
Pub in Rochester Hills. He isa coach, Greg Campy. My name
(00:21):
is Neil Rule. Happy to haveyou all with us. Remember you get
involved with the show, send usa tweet with the hashtag ask Campy.
We asked camp all the questions thatgathered there and we get into it.
But camp pretty good weekend there.Yeah, we had a pretty good week
fort Wing game was non at mefor a long time and we got a
(00:41):
chance to go there, and youknow, I was I'm really concerned about
them because, as I've said toyou, I've mispronounced the word half the
time. But they're the antithesis Nicee, you're getting it. I'm getting better
with yeah, athesis of ours againstour zone because they play position lists.
They're not big, they're little. They not only can they shoot it,
can drive it. And you know, but my staff did an unbelievable job
(01:06):
preparing for that game. I thinkwhen you get slapped the way we got
slapped way back in December, andyou know, to prepare for them and
what they did to us in Decemberand come out and hold them to sixty
two points in their building, justan unbelievable job by my staff. Now,
the players obviously bought into what wewanted to do, and we've said
(01:30):
all along. Smithy says this morethan I do, and I think he's
spot on that I don't coach otherpeople's teams. He says that to me
a lot in the pre game.Yeah, no, he says, this
group of kids is probably the bestthat he's had in his coaching career at
preparation, at you know, doingthe you know, we can do all
(01:53):
the things we want to do.We can give them all all the film
to watch, all the scout youknow, paper after paper to read to,
bit after tidbit to take into thegame. And most games when we
play, when you play zone likewe play, most scouts are not what
the other team does. It's morepersonnel. So let's take fort Wayne.
(02:15):
You know, Jackson number one.Yeah he can shoot the three, but
he's gonna take it, and ifhe goes right, he's going all the
way to the rim. And ifhe goes left, he's gonna two hand
or come to a two footed stopshot fake and try and get back to
his right hand and score at therim. And so as you prepare for
every player, just reading it andlooking at it doesn't mean that that's going
(02:38):
to kick in when the game's goingon, because there's so many possessions and
so many guys with the ball.Is that number one? Is that number
three? What? So our kidshave done an unbelievable job game after game
of understanding personnel. And we callit a personnel scout more than a team
scout. Fort Wayne was a littledifferent because they ran some stuff we hadn't
(02:59):
seen much before, or because they'reall outside guys, you know, And
so we were prepared better this time. And again the last time we played
Xavier on Monday, Detroit on Wednesday, and you know, we had a
one day scout. This time wehad a week scout, a week,
not week as in not strong, but a week as in time as in
seven days, yes, to preparefor them. And again Smittye and Cubb
(03:23):
and Bobby just did an unbelievable jobof getting this group of kids ready,
and you could tell they were frustrated. They made their run, but their
run was really fueled off bad offenseon our part. We turned it over
five out of seven times once wewere up thirteen or fourteen or fifteen or
whatever it was. And you know, so and then to take that and
(03:44):
Goki hit a big three and DQhit some big shots and you know,
Lampman was hurt and gutted it outand he made a big shot and we
got to win. And so Ifelt really really good about that. And
then obviously Saturday was a trap game. We were playing a team that,
you know, probably not very talentedat the level that you need to be
in the Horizon League, which iswhy their record is what it is.
(04:06):
But they've they've won it fort Wayne, they've got they've played other teams.
They went to Wright State and Ithink there was a three or four point
game with a couple of minutes togo, and we showed them that and
we let them know that if youmess around, you're going to find out
right they're going to beat you,and different than what you're going at and
(04:29):
you know, smitty Smitty there's aspeaking of that. There's a little chart
that a guy has and the bottomsays around and the other side of the
chart is find out, and Smittyput that all the players and we didn't
mess around. And I really thoughtbeing a trap game, and how well
we've played, and coming off ofthat Northern Kentucky at Wright stayed at Fort
(04:51):
Wayne that it was going to bea struggle and that you know the game.
We talked on the bench about it. We thought the game would end
up being like a six to fortyfive fifty game that would be close and
then hopefully we pull away at theend. Never in my wildest dreams that
I think we'd have a fifty pointlead. I mean, I remember once
we went to UMKC when Reggie Hamiltonwas on the team and he was going
(05:14):
home for the first time, andwe were had fifty to fifteen at halftime.
But I don't ever remember being upfifty points in a conference game before,
so you really have to Yes,they didn't the other opponent didn't play
well, But I mean we weremagnificent Saturday, just magnificent. And the
play of the game for me wasJack Golkie came out made his first four
(05:34):
to threes and everything was going great, and we got the ball in the
far right corner in the first halfin front of Iupu I's bench. It
swung to Golky at the top ofthe key and he was wide open four
for four and he caught the ballwithout even thinking. He whipped it over
to o Say, who made athree. And the fact that Jack,
you know, he probably should haveshot it because he was four for four
(05:57):
and he would have ended up witheleven if he had, but he gave
that up for even a better shot. And we're seeing that game after game
now, and we're also seeing ouroffense becoming we're now ranked in the top
one hundred in the country and offense, which as good as we are defensively,
that's why we're winning. I mean, we're doing both now. Absolutely.

Backslash Athlete camp I Want to goback to something you said where you talked
about Iupuy and how they got towin at Fort Wayne. Explain that because
(06:40):
I think you know a lot oftimes we think you know linear, right,
I e. You guys beat PurdueFort Wayne. How could Iupuy win
at Fort Wayne? Explain that, camp? How come you see such variance
from time to time? And Iknow the answer to it, but what's
your take on it? Well?Every college basketball game is different, and
to be honest, the thing thatmakes it, Andre Polk is here.
(07:08):
Oh there you have. I didn'trecognize you with your glasses. Man,
I'm all worried. You're not going. Okay, good, I can settle
down now. I was like, where the hell is this kid? Yeah?
Every game is different, and itreally is determined by how well somebody
shoots the ball. It really is. And it's like Saturday, we look
(07:31):
like the greatest offensive team in thecountry, and wow, what good offense
they're running. Look at the ballmove well when it goes in, you
forget about you know some of thebad things that happen in your offenses,
or you don't you know. Again, the education of the fan of seeing
why this guy got open and maybeif somebody missed the screen or didn't do
their job. You don't, youjust fandom doesn't see that. And so
(07:53):
when the ball's going in, anybody'sgood. And if they're a Division one
athlete that's on a scholarship, theycan shoot them all. Maybe not the
level of Goky, but they canhave games like that. And so an
Iupui goes to Fort Wayne and they'remaking everything and Fort Wayne's not, and
then you get nervous and you're notsupposed to lose that game, and then
you start to pressure hit you andbam the next thing. I mean,
(08:16):
Ohio State be Purdue yesterday, Howand the hell can that happen? Right?
I mean, if they play tentimes, Purdue is gonna win nine
of them. Well, mess aroundand find out right. Well, and
it's wild too. They were twentyfor twenty from the free throw line and
still lost the game. You'll Purdueit is it's in college basketball is incredible
like that. It's it's just Imean, you you can look all over
(08:37):
the country. Fans they look attheir own team and they oh, how
did this happen to us? Andwe do this? Everybody does that.
It's not just your team, it'severybody. Everybody blows fifteen point leads,
everybody. You know, nobody isperfect out there because they're eighteen to twenty
three year old kids and it's alldependent on. Every day is different.
(09:01):
And that's why in a league likethe Horizon League, if we could finish
this and I shouldn't even say this, but if we could, if we
could win out and finish sixteen andfour with a league that is so even,
you know, there shouldn't be anyteam in our league sixteen and four
because the level of talent is soeven. But if we do it,
(09:22):
it's because of how mentally strong andhow deep our team is. Because there's
do we have the best starting fivein the league. No, we do
not have the best starting five inthe league, and our kids know that.
I mean, but we have thebest team in the league at least
we do right now, right,And that's what you want to be.
And so every game is different andif you don't. If you think that
(09:45):
Detroit couldn't beat us next Saturday, you're wrong. If you think that Robert
Morris can't beat us Thursday, you'rewrong. And if it happens and ah,
they choked, they no they didn't. We didn't choke. It was
just one of those nights that RobertMorris played great. You know, the
ball went in for him and that. So you have to come every night.
You have to stay focused, youhave to take them one at a
(10:05):
time. And one of the thingsI'm doing a lot with our team is
using Michigan's football team because if youlook at Michigan's football team this year,
they're the epitome of playing one gameat a time and overcoming adversity. And
you can say, how does ateam that was fifteen and oh is that
what they were fourteen fifteen and overcomeadversity? Well, their coach isn't there
(10:26):
for eight games. They're you know, they're being accused of things there.
And those kids kept it together andthey had to go play at Penn State
and then before the Ohio State game, they had to play their Robert Morris
game, right, and they founda way to win it. They didn't
play extremely well, but they foundwhy. I think I can't remember who
it was, Maryland, right, they had to win that game and they
(10:48):
did. And if we're going towin a championship, we have to beat
Robert Morris at Robert Morris, andif there's no way it's going to be
easy, We're going to have tocompete and refuse to lose, and if
we do, then we got twohome games to win a championship. So
it's just it's hard to understand thatas fans because you were so wrapped up
in it, you're so bought intoit. This is our team, this
(11:11):
is we want this, and weget disappointed because it's you know, it's
hard, it's hard to win.Well, Camp, It's funny you bring
that up, because that was mythought process during the Perdue Fort Wayne game
and we got out fifteen in thesecond half. I knew it was coming
at some point, like you youjust know, you know that they're going
to make a push, and Ididn't expect them to come back, you
know, be up by four, have us you know really, because I
(11:35):
thought that was a If you wantto talk about what's different about this team
this year, to me, justfrom what I've seen, Camp, you
talked about mental toughness. I nevergot the sense even losing a fifteen point
lead, being down four with fourminutes to go, with them having the
ball too Perdue Fort Wayne, witha chance to improve upon that lead.
I never got the sense that thisteam was rattled, was worried, was
(11:58):
scared anything about And it was allright, let's get this stop and then
when we get the ball back, let's get a bucket and then get a
stop. Like it was. Itwas very business like camp and Lampmann stepped
up and made a guy's hurt.Wouldn't have had him in the game.
He's dead tired. He played thirtyseven minutes on one leg, and he
stepped up and made a three. And then I called the time out.
(12:20):
And a lot of people would say, well, don't why didn't you call
the time out when they were onthe nineteen or whatever run, Because I
don't do that. I called thetimeout with you know, just at eight.
Any time out between eight thirty andeight would be used as the media.
So I called it at maybe eightthirty five, so we would get
because it's the first time out ofthe second half, we would get a
(12:41):
full two minutes, and then thirtyseconds later we're going to get another full
two minutes. And so that's away to rest, like when he's hurt.
And to me, they used tothat timeout is way more important than
that. And then d Q steppedup and made one, and then he
made the one that we were upto, and it put us up with
forty five seconds going. It wasa hard three. He made it,
(13:03):
but it was nil. He wantedit. There was no question he was
gonna make it. And I don'tthink anybody on our team when he shot
it even thought he wasn't going tomake it. And that's you're right,
that's the difference, the mental toughnessof this team. And you know,
it's why I was so upset atthe Northern Kentucky game because it's the only
game this year that I felt downthe stretch. There are two games down
(13:24):
the stretch that we should have wonthe game and we didn't. One was
Ohio State, and I think thatwas more that it was Ohio State.
It was the first game of theyear and we didn't realize how good we
were, and you know, wedropped the ball out of bounce down we
actually got fouled and should have beenshooting two free throws to go up one,
but we dropped the ball out ofbounce and they made a three on
(13:46):
the inbounds play to you know,to go up four with a minute to
go, where it should have beenour ball down one that game and then
the you know, we it wasn'tmental toughness as much as it was stupidity
at the Yes, I did justcalls to but just we did some not
real smart things in the last minuteand a half of that and we didn't
understand. We got this game won, We got the ball, So what
(14:09):
they're going to score a lot?You know, we just made a mistake.
And the guy that did it wasI mean, he was in the
locker room apologizing before I even gotin there, you know. And that's
another great sign with this team asboy, we're smart and we understand and
and we've got great leadership on this, said Blake Lampman. You know,
I've always said that I thought thatthe probably the greatest leader that I ever
coached was Drew Valentine, and Ithink that Blake is every bit as good,
(14:33):
if not better, as a leader. You can't say somebody is better
or not, but they're up inthat stratosphere and Blake Lamptman's up there.
I mean, it's he's unbelievable asa leader with this group. And obviously
to your talking about Jack Golkie,it was we learned today he has been
named the Horizon League Player of theWeek, the third different Golden Grizzly to
be named Horizon League Player of theWeek this season. Well, if if
(14:54):
if he wasn't named it, there'dhave to be an investigation on man.
I mean, Jesus, what wouldyou have to do to be player of
the week if he wasn't. CampYou guys won six of the last seven
coming down the stretch here in February, and before we cut to the break,
I mean, your team's in February. We talk about it a lot.
(15:15):
The resume bears it out, thenumbers bear it out. Why does
it work in February typically under agrad campy team. Well, you know,
to be honest with you, weweren't very good the last two years
in February. So I had nottaken any of the credit for it.
You know, three years ago,I would have said we're always good in
February, But the last two yearswe've been kind of abysmo in February.
So this is these are these kids, And again I go back to my
(15:37):
staff. I think my staff hasdone just an unbelievable job in game preparation.
And that's their job. You know, in every organization, people have
jobs, and the head I alwaysgets the credit for it, when a
lot of times the head coach hasn'tor the head of that organization has absolutely
nothing to do with other than hiringthe people and saying do it. You
(16:00):
know, and our game preparation,I stick my nose in there. They
probably don't like it when I do. But my staff is in charge that
game preparation. And if you wereto watch us practice, I don't.
You know, a lot of headcoaches everything is you know, it's scripted
out and you're going to do this, and they'll meet with their staff and
(16:21):
say this, this and this.We probably meet less than any staff in
the country. And part of thatis that I think that we enable them.
But I trust them too, andthey they're unbelievable at game preparation.
They're unbelievable at understanding the nuances ofour zone and what it takes to play
our zone and how do you winoffensively. I don't give them much.
(16:42):
I like to hear their I liketo hear their opinions, but on the
offensive side, I hoard that Idon't want anybody bugging me with that.
You know what, plays to callthem things like that. But I will
tell you there's been many, manytimes that Jeff Smith would whisper in my
ear, why how about this play? And I'll run it and it works,
and then I'll take credit for it, right right, But what's problem?
(17:06):
Yes, exactly, So again Igo back to that game preparation.
We our staff and that's probably whyeverybody, we're so close as a team.
And I mean, did you watchus on the floor Saturday that I
mean, I I don't know ifI've had a lot of great players go
off in games, right, butwatching Gokey go off, it was more
(17:27):
fun watching our bench than it wasmaking the shots. I mean, I
was watching our bench because I couldyou know, they come to the time
out, they're wiping him down. You know, I never seen anything like
that before. It was it wasto me exactly. I'm having as much
fun as I've ever had coaching ateam because of them. And you know,
(17:48):
so it's it's all fun and gamesright now. We mess around and
find out Thursday though, it won'tbe fun in that games, right,
So we've got to stay focused, all right. We will take our first
break and we come back. I'llbe joined by Andre Pull We're live This

(20:30):
by Andre Polk here at RJ's puband Andre, appreciate you taking some time
here. And you know, beforewe get into your story a little bit
now, now, certainly your yourseason has had some twists and turns,
and your career has had some twistsand turns and stuff like that. But
you know, as you as youhear Coach Campy talk about this basketball team
(20:51):
and we're up here chopping it upabout this basketball team, you agree with
that with what camp said? Whyis this team so mentally strong? Man?
One reason I say were mentally strongis because how close we are.
You know, Coach camp he doesa good job with saying there every day
when we got practice coming up beforethe game. You know, he acknowledges
the fact that We're so close witheach other and that does allow us to
(21:11):
trust each other on the court. You know, when we got a game,
we toch situations that did us achance to trust each other absolutely.
Well. The Red Wings just won, by the way, a little afternoon
hockey game in overtime, so they'restaying in the playoff mix. No.
But but Andre, first off, let's let's get into your season a little
bit. Now. You came out, you played ten games this year,
and obviously you've had some some injurysituations that we're going to get into greater
(21:36):
detail, and you know, asas the season went on, you know,
through the camp portion of it thenmoving into the season, just kind
of you know, your impression ofhow things went for you. I know,
I know it was pretty choppy foryou. I definitely say it was
tough. It was definitely because Ididn't have the chance to have the summer
session like the rest of the guysdid, you know, so you're already
playing from behind the eight ball.Yeah, exactly. So when we went
(21:57):
to Italy and August, I probablyhave four or five practices under my belt
with the team in total, soit was a tough challenge. Then coming
back After that, it was justhard getting in shape. You know,
in my body, I've been sittingfor about five six months, so I
really had to get back in shapeand try my best to catch up with
a team. So all that wasa challenge, but every day I just
went out there and I tried mybest to just push through it and get
(22:19):
to what I do. No,absolutely, and certainly, Andre, I
guess that is the biggest challenge, right because you're playing from behind. You
got to get in shape, asyou said, So it's one thing to
deal with the practice element of it, but then after practice is over,
you got to catch up and dothe extra work to get back to where
everybody else is. So imagine it'sa big challenge. How do you keep
that going? I mean I justtried my best, and with the injuries,
(22:41):
you know, it's definitely an evenharder obstacle because you know, getting
in shape, you gotta do runningand everything, and then when you gotta
need private battle and that, it'sharder to go back to the gym and
be able to push through and doeverything you can. So it's pretty much
just while we're in practice, youknow, I just try to put go
hard as I can at every repone hundred percent speed and just try to
get what I could take from itwhile I can. So Andre, Just
for the people that don't know obviously, you originally were at Central Michigan University,
(23:04):
member of the mac all freshman teamduring your time there, transferred here
from Garden City Community College. Justtake us through your path to Oakland University.
Like you said, I spent twoyears at Central Michigan, And I
said my first year there, itwas a pretty good year for me.
Like you said, I was onthe mac freshman team, so that was
a really big year. And Ifractured my fibula that year and I missed
(23:26):
the second half of the season. So that year went the way it did.
And then the second year, newcoaching staff, everything changed, so
it was a bit different for me. And I tore my miniscus that year
in January as well, so thatcut short of my season that year.
And then going JUCO last year,it wasn't as hard as it was at
Division one because you know, althoughI had been sitting with an injury,
(23:48):
the competition style, I was alreadyup there with them guys, so just
hitting the court it was a littlebit easier but once again battling the knee.
You know, that was like comeout there some days, practicing some
days and sit and I really knowwhat I'm gonna get out of it.
But coming to Oakland, it wassomething that was pretty much sat and played.
Before I got to Djoco. Youknow, I wanted to come here
before, so there was some academicissues, so I really went down there
to get that straightened out and thenhad it sat about October. I think
(24:12):
I was committed here, so gotcha. Gotcha. Coach Camp and I were
talking and you and I before wewent on the air here you speaking of
that, the injury situation. Youhave a surgery schedule that's coming up pretty
soon. What what are you lookingat getting done there and kind of the
timeline and getting back and all that. I have multiple label tiers on my
left shoulder as well as a partiallytorn rotator cuff, so they're going to
(24:34):
take care of the label taiers. They're just going to be a rodtarrier cuff
alone, and they said down ahill on his own. But I'm looking
at six months out, so Ithink i'll be back again by September,
so it'd be kind of the samething. I went through this past year.
Well, I guess I mean yougot experience, right, Like,
definitely that is a boost. Let'stalk about Andrea Polk here on The Great
Campy Show. We're live at OurJ's Pub in Rochester Hills. What about
(24:56):
what about Andre Polk off the floor? Because you're you're a quiet dude,
like when when we're traveling and stufflike that, I don't hear you saying
too much, you know what I'msaying. Oh yeah, yeah, as
a matter of fact, So yeah, you know, like you're you're you're
kind of a quiet dude as faras like when we're traveling and you know,
(25:17):
when you hear you kind of hearthe usual guys cutting up. You
know what I'm saying, You're You'renot You're not one of those vocal dudes.
But you know, just what's Andrepolkle Like? I mean, you
say I'm not a vocal dude, but I think if the rest of the
team had to say it, Ithink I would be the most vocal dude
out there. Okay, I'm prettyI'm a funny guy. You know,
I try to be funny. Andone thing about it is dealing with the
injury. So when I'm outside ofthe court, I have to give myself
(25:40):
another reason to be happy. SoI try to make everybody else laugh,
and I basically find myself laughing withthem in the midst of that. So
when we're on the road, Imight see it quiet, but when I'm
with the guys, I'm definitely talkingto what I'm saying because you're like,
you're in the back there. Idon't. I don't hear you a lot,
you know, up up at thefront, but you're but you're in
there stirring it up. Yeah,I'm stirring it up. I keep it,
I keep it, Cord, keepit Court. I like that.
(26:03):
I like that. Joined by AndrePolk here on the Greg Campi Show.
There is a question that I askeverybody that that comes on here. This
the limit for this team, theceiling for this team. I mean we've
seen it time and time again. We saw at the beginning of the year.
You know, at some point yougo through a little bit of adversity
in a season, but you guysobviously have it rolling. How far can
(26:25):
this team go? I think wecan go far in the tournament, you
know, I definitely think we canmake the NCAA. Tournament and get a
few rounds in it. You know, I know, Conrich Campy does one
of his goals before he get outof here. So I think this is
definitely the team that maybe that hada chance to take us probably to the
Sweet six team. No, absolutely, absolutely. We mentioned earlier you came
(26:45):
here from Garden City Community College, which obviously Bobby Naubert, who is an
assistant coach here at Oakland, hewas there as well. Bobby like his
coaching style, just kind of hisstyle as a person. You know,
he's he's got a ton of energy, he's a lot of fun. You
know what's he meant you know toyou as you've been able to work with
him now for a couple of years, Bobby, he's meant a lot to
(27:07):
me personally because even with me gettingthe central, he was a big help
with the coaching staff, with coachcom media and them getting me the central
before he left. So going toJUCO and going to Garden with him,
it was pretty much him. Hewas kind of the reason that I went
down and I knew I could trusthim and I knew I would be able
to get the work I needed toget back to Division one. So even
coming to Oakland. I didn't knowhe was coming to Oakland. I was
working the camp and I seen aguy working. I was after the camp
(27:30):
and I was looking at the standsand I've seen a guy that look like
Bobby, and I was like, wow, he looked familiar and he looked
at me and I was like Bobby. And that's when he came up to
me. He told me, like, you know, I got the job.
So when he let me know that, I was super excited to know
he got the job. And Boomerwas also coming here with me, So
yeah, absolutely, Well we're happyyou guys are all here, and certainly
we wish you good luck with theupcoming surgery. And one thing that I've
(27:51):
learned about you, Andrea, isis not gonna stop you man. Like
it's it's just another minor setback. You'll put the work in and you'll be
back right definitely. It's I've beenin college for four years. Each year
has been an injury, so it'salways about to just work getting back on
the court and just find them myrhythm and get back to it. Absolutely,
man, I could tell I cantell about looking your eye. Man,
you'll be back at Certainly we willsee you back there as well.
But in the meantime, enjoy theride this year, right, Thank you

Happy cows, real milk. Thereyou go. People always ask about the
happy cows, so we had tolet them know that the cows are still
happy. Camp Have you ready toanswer some questions? I'm happy, all
right, Okay, Well let's doit then, Marty, Pittsburgh Marty kicking
on. We'll see Pittsburgh Marty comingup this week. As a matter,
gonna have lunch with him on Thursdaybefore the game. Absolutely, Marty says,
(31:18):
sewn is girls basketball team and Iare looking forward to seeing you on
Thursday at r M. You questionfor the week, if you had two
recruiting wishes this offseason, what typeof players would you want and why?
Well, what type of players wouldbe identical to what we have as far
as commitment, type of people theyare and with mental toughness and would fit
(31:41):
in with this group. This isa unique group, and you know we're
gonna lose some players and can weplug back in the same type of commitment
to I mean, you know,Golki's making shots, but man, there's
nobody, well maybe just Lampman, that have worked harder than he has,
you know, and they just havea great work ethic. So we want
(32:02):
that. We want to keep that. And when you're good, you can
do that. In recruiting, whenyou're trying to become good, it's hard
to do that because you've got toget good to attract those type of young
men. So, and then weneed a point guard, probably two.
You know, we've we've got twoor three scholarships left available. We don't
(32:24):
you know, who knows what's goingto happen when this is over the way
the portal works, the way collegebasketball is today, we might need seven
players next year, who knows.I don't worry about that stuff anymore.
I'm just worried about this team andgetting to it the end of it and
then figuring it out. But wedefinitely we need a couple of point guards.
(32:44):
And then you know, a lotdepends on Andre and the and the
injury because we need rim protection. Were recruiting trying to find rim protectors.
And you know, Andre, Andre'sprobably got the best NBA if you were
to do the NBA combined with ourplayers, and a lot of getting to
(33:05):
the NBA, and that is metricsand the analytics of you know, size,
length, arm length, vertical broadjump, all that kind of stuff,
right, Yeah, yeah, Andreis probably the closest NBA player we
have. You know, everybody's gonnasay, well, Tredy Townsen, yeah
he's got a chance. But justfrom the metrics of it, Andre is.
And if you watch Andrea in theworkout, you know, I watch
(33:27):
him work out even now with notbeing able to use his left shoulder,
and I still God, he couldonly play, you know, he does
so many great things. Uh,he's got to get stronger, and and
that's going to get especially in theupper body, and that's he's not gonna
be able to do that this summer. So you know, we've got to
and he understands this. We've gotto recruit a rim protector. And if
(33:49):
if Andre comes back one hundred percentand ready to go, then the two
of them can fight it out andthey'll probably both play. You know,
but we we need a rim protector. You see out of Baru in like
the Milwaukee game, and there aregames where he protects that rim and what
that does to our defense in ourzone, and that's really not what he's
best at. I'd like brew onthe wing or at the nail. We
(34:15):
had a big discussion before the GreatCamp Show audience, we had a big
discussion before the show about what thenail is. So, but he needs
to be in those spots if we'regoing to be great. I sure he
can play a few minutes at theat the hoop next year, but I
need him at the nail or onthe wing next year. And I need
a rim protector. And Chris Conwayhas become the best version of Chris Conway,
(34:38):
and but he but he can protectat certain times, but he's not
an elite rim protector. So gettinga guy that can play fifteen minutes and
just protect that rim and you know, late game defensive you know, offense
to defensive substitutions and that, andthen we need a shooter, you know,
we need We think we've recruited shootersin the In the Hoped Twins,
(35:01):
there's two guys that are shooting fortyplus percent from the three in junior college.
There are two of the top leadingscorers in the country and junior college,
and I surely hope that they arewhat we think they are, but
we always recruit another one. Andthere's a couple of kids out there that
we're recruiting really hard that are that, and hopefully we'll get one of them.
So that's what we're doing. Recruitingwas just kind of a follow up
(35:22):
camp on what you talked about rightthere, because it was weird to hear
you say it, even though thatis the case. You said, I'll
worry about next year when we getto next year, and that you talk
about antithesis, that's it. That'sthe antithesis of of how you used to
be. Well, we built youknow, obviously, in forty years,
we build a program and it wasbuilt on player development and growth and just
(35:43):
can't do that anymore. I've setover and over again Chris Conway's the dying
the dinosaur, the dying breeder. To see a Chris Conway again, I
hope it happens. You know,Cooper Craig could be that guy, but
who knows if he's going to hangaround, who knows what's going to happen.
He's had some injuries too, butI mean Cooper, well, he's
just gotten better and better, andthen the injuries this year have derailed him.
(36:07):
I just can't get over the amountof injuries that we've seen in the
last six seven years. It's justat some point it's got an end for
us. I mean, we wentinto the game Saturday, and, honest
to God, at ten o'clock inthe morning Saturday, I had no idea
who was gonna play. I meanI was told that Rocket wasn't gonna play.
I was told Blake's not gonna play, and I was told Tone Hunter's
not gonna play. The funny storyis, you know, we get to
(36:31):
the game and Smitty before the game, I look at him and I go
our Blake and Evan Solomon is awalk on has been injured and I said,
our Blake and Evan in the scorebook, and he goes no,
and I go go put him inand he looked at me like, you
know, I got three eyes. Why would we do that? Well?
(36:52):
Because we were down to eight players, I thought, And what happens if
there's a flagrant foul and two ofour players jump off the bench and you
know, and now we got tofinish with four guys. We've got to
be prepared. At least if they'rein the scorebook, then I can tell
Blake, go get dressed and you'regoing to stand at the top of the
key. You know, don't runor move, but you're going to stand
(37:13):
out there. So we got fiveguys and we can at least look like
we're playing defense, right, Andso we're thinking about that. With four
games to go in this season,we got a chance to win a championship.
That's the injury thing has just beencrazy. It's been that way the
last three to six years. Butthis year it's not as you know,
you look at it and ha haha, right, but or last year it
(37:36):
was we're crying, or I meanBlake is in a boot, or Trey
Townsend was in a boot. Thewhole month of February. Never practiced,
once took the boot off, playedin the games, went back into boot,
never practiced. Blake Lampman was supposedto have knee surgery in the middle
of February and didn't have it becausehe loved Jalen Moore and he wanted Jalen
to have a chance. And youknow, this year, it's the same
(37:57):
stuff. It's just that we're sodeep we're not seeing I mean, say
Price came off the bench and starteda game. Who would have guessed,
Oh, say Price is gonna startgame? And then he takes our first
four shots and ends up with fourteenpoints, And well, I love that,
by the way, I loved it. Yeah, it's why we're winning.
Of course I love it. Hemade him and we're winning. But
I mean it's not ideal. Yeah, but I got off subject like normal.
(38:20):
You know that basically our depth andwho knows what we're gonna have next
year. Who knows where people aregoing to go and where they're gonna end
up. And we just got toworry about this year. We got a
chance for a special, special finishto this season. That's our whole focus.
The rest of it is We'll worryabout that in April. All right,
more questions with the hashtag ask Campyon Twitter. Is still time to
(38:42):
get involved. If you want mapfrom the Horizon Roundtable. This is a
good one. Camp He says, when you shake a coach like Crenshaw's hand
after a game like Saturdays, whatdo you say You're not You're not trying
to show him up. Obviously theyknow that you've known Matt since his playing
days as a godfather of college basketball. What can you offer him in that
moment? Well, and again,I don't know if people wanted me saying
stuff like this, but I pulledhim aside at halftime and I said to
(39:07):
him, I go, Matt,I go, Honestly, I don't want
you to get back in the game, but I hope you do. I
said, but you got to understand, I only got nine guys and there's
going to be players out there.I go, you know, I'll do
some stuff. We'll try and walkit up the floor and we'll do things,
but that's the last thing I wantto do, especially a team that's
struggling like they're struggling. And heunderstands, and he thanked me for that.
(39:29):
And after the game. But youknow, I just shook his hand
and I told him I go,times will get better, just stick with
it, and he just you know, who wants to hear anything at that
point when when you're struggling. Imean, they lost to Detroit on Wednesday
night, and that that had tobe a devastating loss for him. You
know, there was a team thatwas going to lose to Detroit and no
one wanted to be it, andyou know, so it was we knew,
(39:53):
we knew that we were probably ina good position Saturday after that loss,
that if we came out and appliedto gas early in the game,
that we could win, you know, win the thing. And he's got
to go back and right now,if I were in his shoes, I
would be doing everything I could toget my team ready. Let's win a
tournament game. Let's salvage our seasonand win a tournament game. And I'm
(40:15):
sure that's Matt's a great coach andhe was a great player. The last
time IUPUI went to the NCAA tournament. He was their star guard. And
he's in a bad, tough situationand he'll survive it, and I think
he'll do fine. Gary mccarec.Good to see Gary back here in the
full with the hashtag ask camp bescheduling questions camp thankfully the big ten state
(40:36):
of twenty league games where you keeplooking to schedule games with them? What
about other major conferences? And alsoMSU game at LcA's that's still an option.
And any word on Michigan State Oaklandcontract extensions, Yeah, I'll go
to that first. We've got onegame left on the contract. You know,
I did them a pretty darn bigfavor this year. We're working on
(40:58):
the date right now. I wasworking with them the last on Friday and
Thursday of last week. It's ait's a weird thing because next year is
the leap year, and that screwsup basketball schedules. I don't know why
one day changes everything, but nextyear we're going to play three league games
before Christmas, and unfortunately, oneof them is going to be December eighteenth,
(41:20):
and I can't change that date. And that's right in the window of
when we play Michigan State. SoI'm not going to play Michigan State on
the sixteenth. We did that thisyear and it played Xavier and then Detroit
and for way, I'm not goingto do that to my team again.
So we're not going to play thesixteenth. If we do, it's gonna
be a nine dy one, youknow, and it'll be the worst ninety
(41:40):
one in America. Will win onehundred and eighty to nothing if we you
know. So you guys know,So there you go. So when that
schedule comes out, you'll understand ifyou see that game. So we played
at Cleveland State on the eighteenth ofDecember, so we're looking at probably the
twenty first. The problem with thetwenty first of December is next year,
(42:05):
with the new football stuff, there'sgoing to be four or five football games
on the twenty first. There's threescheduled on the twenty first, and one
on Friday night the twentieth. Inthe new football n say a format where
you know twelve teams are going tothe playoffs, there's going to be eight
teams playing that's the opening weekend ofit. So we got to be careful
with that. We surely don't whatif Michigan's got a home game that day
(42:25):
or Michigan State has a home gamethat day and we're scheduled, So we
want to stay away from that becausewe want twenty thousand people. We want
this to be the Jewel game,so we're trying to come up with a
date that fits. The other issuefor us is the Saturday before is our
graduation and we've played that game ongraduation today and Aura does not want me
to do that because she wants tobe at the game right. So so
(42:47):
that wasn't the response I was thinking. I was going to go from you
there, So trust me, wewon't be doing it that respect respect When
the boss says don't do it,you don't do it right. So you
know we we so that game. We're working on that and I have not
scheduled anything else because that is themost important non league game and once I
(43:09):
get that scheduled, over work asfar as the bye games. Right now,
we're too good to get by games, and nobody's going to schedule us
right now. Once the season's over, once they see what happens to our
roster, then you know, weget guys into portal. You know,
they see that Goki and Lampman aregone, and they analyze everything. We'll
(43:30):
start getting by games, so we'lldo all that stuff. Usually by now
I've got it close to being doneand this year not even close. Again,
This portal thing affects everything camp.We got a couple of Mike Rodgers
questions as a matter of fact,so we'll combine those into one. GEO
says, what did you think ofMike Rodgers moved against Iupui The dude was
(43:50):
smooth out there. And they alsosaid, you seem to have a new
folk hero on your roster and MikeRogers. So I think he's the only
two hundred and sixty pound point guardin the country, so that's probably got
something to do with it. Youknow, Mike is Mike. He's been
sick, he's been hurt. It'sbeen a struggle for him all year.
(44:13):
It's been a struggle weight wise forhim. You know, he's he's battling
that and the injury and being ableto practice, and I mean he's probably
practiced ten times since December thirtieth orfifteenth or something like that. It's one
thing after another, and those thingshave its Like andre, those things happen,
and he got to overcome him,and he is battling really hard to
(44:36):
do it, and he's gotten behindsome obviously, some players. We brought
Mike here expecting him to play.I mean, he's a talented player.
He shoots it better and I thoughthe shot it. He's he's shown some
signs of some stuff. He's struggledearly to pick up his own and the
injuries have hurt that too. SoI'm happy that he got in. He's
(44:58):
happy he got in and he showedwhat he can do. I mean,
he did turn it over once ortwice, but he's a little nervous,
but he I mean, he crossoversnice it is, and he finishes pretty
good. And in dribble drive. One of the reasons we recruited him is
because he's like a tailback, youknow. Now he's like a full back
and and he can get to therim and in the dribble drive. You
want guys that can do that.So he's he's a commodity for us.
(45:22):
So I mean, if if youknow, Blake and Tone don't come back,
there's a chance you're going to seeMike Rodgers, you know, against
Robert Morris on Thursday and against theRight State on Saturday, and maybe in
the Detroit game. If we've gotto rest Tone and rest Blake for the
for the tournament, because the tournament'smost important thing. So if they if
(45:45):
Blake and Tone can't play, we'renot gonna throw them out there. Like
you know, I I pushed theenvelope at Fort Wayne. We had to
win that game, and I pushedthe envelope, And we're not going to
do that now we're we've got youknow, we're guaranteed a home, a
buy in a home game, andthere's no difference between in the tournament.
There's no difference between our opponent ifwe're third, second, fourth, or
(46:07):
first. We're going to play somebodyreally good because there's nine really good teams
in this league. So we're gonnaplay somebody really good in the first round.
So I'm not going to push that. If we've got a chance to
get the ring, obviously we're goingafter the rink. But I'm not gonna
put where one Blaker Tone could missthe tournament for to win a the conference
(46:28):
regular season. All right, lastone here from our guy, mister Kennedy.
Jimmy Kennedy says, as reflect onthe season with three games to go,
how would you describe the season basedon your expectations going in? Well,
I would say that anybody that wasat the Fort Wayne game in UH
on December second would have walked awayfrom that game saying Fort Wayne's going to
win the league and Oakland's going tostruggle to be in the top five.
(46:51):
I would say that any yeah,I would say that anybody was at the
first exhibition game that walked away watchingus lose to a Division two school in
an exhibition game, I would say, First of all, you don't understand
exhibition games. If you felt thatwe weren't going to be any good.
But I could see where you mightthink that, because normally in exhibition games,
(47:13):
you know you're supposed to win bythirty and that. But we played
that game without Lampman. We playedthat game against a very very good team
that we knew would be good, and we played it without any offense.
We just we weren't going to showOhio State anything. We weren't going to
do anything, and it turned outthat way. But I think most people
(47:34):
that walked out of that bill andthat night thought, oh my god,
it's going to be a long year. And I think most people that walked
out of the Fort Wayne game, even though we had just beaten Xavier.
There's a lot of people being honestaround here right now, you know,
But think about it. Think aboutpeople said that after the fort Wayne game,
we just beat Xavier on Monday night, ed Xavier, and yet we
walked out of that game thing andoh my god, we're not very good,
(47:57):
right, And it's just the maturationof this team. It's been to
me, has been as much asfun as any team I've coached. And
we've grown. Man, we've reallygrown as a team. And we're three
wins away from winning a conference championship. All right, let's take our final
break. When we come back,we'll talk about the next steps in that
pursue coming up next week, andagain as you talked about as well,
(48:21):
someome ticket information to discuss and everythinglike that as far as the postseason goes.

back to the Greg Campy Show liveat our Jay's Pup and Rochester Hills.
He's a coach, Greg Campy. My name is Neil Rule. Happy to
have you with us. And duringthe break there, camp you just told
me Raka Watts does have class onMonday nights, so he will not be
able to come out. But Iwould advise of people this The Golden Grizzlies
podcast page episode I had a conversationwith RockA Wats earlier this season, so
(50:58):
you can go here's a good interview, a very very good interview. We
talked a lot about his journey andeverything, like that episode number one forty
five at the Bear in mind podcast, iTunes, SoundCloud, wherever you get
your podcast in that so go aheadand give that a listen if you want.
But camp certainly tomorrow, excuse me, check that. On Wednesday,
we will leave and go to Pittsburghfor a Thursday night game against Robert Morris.
(51:22):
But before we do that, Camp, you've alluded to this, we
have clinched at least a top fourseed in the Horizon the top three seed
as a matter of facts, sothat in fact guarantees a home game next
Thursday in the Horizon League tournament. So that is out there as well,
tickets information, all that kind ofstuff. How does that work, Well,
we were playing Thursday night at seveno'clock. The opponent to be determined
(51:45):
based on you know, the firstround games that'll be on Tuesday night.
You know, the only assurance ofwho you're playing is the four or five
game, and we will not bein the four or five game. We
have to win one of our lastthree and we'll be guaranteed a top two
spot. And so if we canwin one of the last three, we're
(52:06):
a top two. If we winall three and Green Bay wins all four
of theirs, then the number oneseed will be determined based on who finishes
ahead of who. If Northern Kentuckyfinishes ahead of Cleveland State will be the
number one seed, and if ClevelandState finishes ahead of Northern Kentucky, then
(52:28):
Green Bay would be the number oneseed. So that's if both teams win
out. My guess is based onjust this league and how things go,
is that's probably not going to happen. Winning out for either team's not going
to be easy. But if wecan just get one of the three,
we're in the top two. Andthen if we get all three, you
(52:50):
know, there's a good chance wecould be the You know, if we
get all three, we definitely atleast tie for the championship, right,
and if we get all three wecould win it outright, we could tie
for it, we could still bethe number one seed, or we could
be the number two seeds. Soit's just a little bit too early to
predict that. But it's not tooearly to understand that we're playing at home
Thursday, seven pm, and weneed people there. Man, This group
(53:14):
of kids deserves you, guys, and we need it because this is it'll
be the single most important game ofthe year. Thursday, March seventh,
everybody at the Oakland University Credit UnionArena, so roll on out to that.
We do know that for a fact, it's March madness, Ebody.
It's kind of nice to know thatthis was still three games to go in
(53:35):
the season. It's a good feeling. I didn't think there were many times
this year. I didn't think we'dbe feeling that this early. So it's
good. Don't forget we were oneand two, right and we're now thirteen
and four. So you've got togive this group a lot of credit.
Oh absolutely, and regular ticket priceseverything is the same, So make sure
you guys come on out. Thatis March madness. That is why we
do all of that. All right, Camp road game at Robert Morris and
(53:58):
look, we kind of know whatwe're walking into right here. That it's
going to be a slug fest. You know that. I know that players
know that they're fighting, they're fightingfor a home court. Yeah. In
the in the quarterfinal round right there, they're ninth. If they get to
eighth, I think they're two gamesout of eighth. If they get to
eighth, and the team there aretwo games behind, plays three road games,
(54:21):
so they're thinking if they they youknow, they went out. They're
going to get a home game, and it's hard to play at Robert Morris.
I don't know why we've not.It's it's it's one of the best
arenas in the league. They don'tdraw extremely well right now. They I
think they used to before they gotin our league, but they were at
the top of their old leagues. So that's why they drew well. And
(54:42):
I think everybody drew well pre prepandemic, you know, And I just
think that that's changed everything and hopefullywe'll get back. But it's a tough
place for us to play. Welost there last year. During the COVID
year, we played two there andwe split. You know. The two
years ago Jamal Kaines year, welost a really really or no, we
(55:05):
won there that that year, wewon there. That year. It was
last year we lost a tough one. We just got beat by Youngstown and
went there. So it's been atough place to play. You know.
We've got to do everything we canto be one point ahead. We can't
worry about anything except Thursday night, the grind and prepare like they prepare and
do everything that we've done the lastfew weeks and then find a way to
(55:27):
be one point ahead when it's overand come home with a chance to play
two home games to win a championship. No, absolutely, and then Right
State obviously on Sunday as well.Note that Sunday for the Right State game
in camp. You know, wehaven't really talked a lot about that.
I know you're just kind of gameby game by game, but I think
there's a lot on the line withthat Right State game, just in the
(55:49):
fact of what it represents, whata loss would mean for Right State too,
because you've talked about this camp andyou held firm with this, because
the data backs you up. Ifyou're going on the road for the Horizon
League tournament, you're gonna have someproblems. That's just the way that it
is. That's what it shows.Since we've gone to this format, there's
only been one team one road winin the quarterfinals, and that was Right
(56:10):
State lost at home when they hada twenty five point lead with five minutes
to go. Oh, it doeshappen to other teams? Really? Yeah?
I was told it doesn't. Theyhad a just Oakland, They had
a twenty five point lead against Milwaukee, and that was and that was a
great team. I mean, thatwas a tremendous Right State team. And
that's the only loss in the quarterfinalsthat the home teams had since we've gone
(56:36):
to this format. So you knowit's in Right State's playing to be in
the top four. It's gonna andwe just held one of the top two
three scoring teams in the country tosixty points in their gym. I think
they're gonna come here, you know, kind of like we went to Fort
Wayne, kind of the same situationbut reversed, and we'll be in Fort
(56:57):
Wayne shoes and they'll be and wecould be playing and even if we lose
Thursday, we're still playing for firstplace, right So yeah, it's that
game's going to be a war.I mean that we've beaten them three times
in a row after having lost tothem six of seven or something like that,
So you know that that's that isa built in every year, hardest
(57:21):
game of the year type scenario. And I don't even want to think about
it right now, Neil, Iknow, not me talking about it,
and I shouldn't be. We gottaworry about Thursday, no, absolutely,
And and it is as you talkedabout it, Robert Morris. It's pretty
cool. The colonials, the sectionsof the seats are shaped like American their
colored like American flags. It's prettycool. I think it's. I mean,
if you've ever been to Northern Kentucky, you know they have the biggest
(57:44):
time arena in the in the league. But I think Robert Morris has the
coolest arena. And it's new,and it's you know, it's more fitting
to a school their size and oursize and that, and it's it's really
cool place to play. All right, camp final two minutes here of the
show. How do you keep thistrain rolling? I don't the players do.
How players keep this train rolling? They can stay focused and they keeped
(58:07):
out the outside noise out. Theydon't listen to this radio show. They
don't listen to me talking about rightState on Sunday. They they just stay
focused on you know, we've gota job to do Thursday night, and
when it's over, we got tobe one point ahead. And how we
play means nothing, you know,it is the learning is over, right,
the learning is over. We screwedup. We screwed up the final
(58:30):
six seconds of the first half theother day. And I wasn't very happy
about it. I didn't say aword to them in the locker room at
halftime about it because it's it's ifit had been three weeks ago, I
would have gone nuts on them overit. But as you as you say,
the Hayes in the barn, orthe horses are out or whatever it
was, well, it depends ifsomething bad has happened and the horses are
(58:50):
out of the barn. If somethinggood happen, the hey is in the
bar. Okay, So the Hayesin the barn right now, and as
their coach, they're going to tuneme out if if I start screaming and
yell at Adam about you know, getting better right now. It isn't about
getting better now. It's about maintainingkeeping focus, maintaining keeping the outside noise
out, and understanding everything that they'vedone to get us to this position is
(59:14):
on them and it's on them nowto bring it home. Absolutely well,
let's let's bring the show home.Camp. Appreciate your time as always,
big thank you to everybody here inthe crowd at RJ's Pub. We'll be
back at it every single Monday aThursday night. As we talked about seven
o'clock Robert Morris and we'll be therefor that. So for the coach,
Greg Campy and Andre Polk. Myname is Neil Rul. Thanks for listening
(59:36):
to the Greg Campy Show live fromRJ's Pub in Rochester Hills. Well see
you lighter,
