It's time for the Greg Campy Show, presented by r j's Pub. Let's
go live to r j's Pub inRochester Hills. Here's Coach Campy and the
voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neil Rule. What's going onybody? Welcome back to
another episode of the Greg Campy Show. We're live at r j's Pub in
Rochester Hills. He is a coach, Greg Campy. My name is Neil

(00:21):
Rule. Greg Hassen. Back inour twelve seventy the Bet Studios camp you
got your hand up in the air. Yes, mister Campy. She just
walked by with a pizza. Ithought she was bringing it to me the
champions but no, she faked usout. Give it some. I got
my diet doctor Pepper, but Iget that every week. Where's the championship
stuff? Man? Are you supposedto get something when you win a championship?

(00:42):
Absolutely? But the gold of course. Yeah, some parmesan Okay,
absolutely? My god. It soundlike people on Twitter now we win a
championship, they're all pissed off becausewe lost. Well, if you're gonna
win one, you want to winone when you lose, right, Absolutely,
And that is how things shook outyesterday. Despite the loss to Right

(01:04):
State, the Golden Grizzlies have lockedup at least a share of the Horizon
League Men's basketball title, with theopportunity to go ahead and take care of
business next Saturday in the Arena againstDetroit Mercy is if you need more storylines
for that game, but camp,as we said, share the Horizon League
Men's basketball championship. Well, Itold our guys Thursday at Robert Morrise that

(01:26):
was this was the game. Youknow, if you if you win that
game, we're going to win theleague championship. And we played, you
know, one of the best defensivegames we've ever played, and we won
the game. And I think wewe pretty much knew how it was going
to play out. You know,we didn't have a great deal of juice
Saturday. Right State came in playingfor home court, you know, and

(01:49):
I still think one through five they'vegot the most talent in the league.
Fortunately, the game's more than that, you know, for us. But
and they it's funny because they RightStates is shooting fifty four percent from the
floor, which is, you know, unheard of. It's the second best

(02:10):
field goal percentage in college basketball. In the last twenty five years. And
in our game at their place,we held them to thirty seven percent.
We held them to less than apoint per possession their average in almost ninety
points a game. And then inthe first half Saturday we did the same.
We held them to forty two percent, which is twelve percentage below what

(02:30):
they are, and we held themto point nine to seven points per possession.
And then in the second half,Hubert's came out and made an unbelievable
tough two. We missed two consecutiveshots and then he got opened and made
a three and the floodgates opened andthey became who they were, and we

(02:50):
had a bad half against them, and people are upset that. You know
what, the the final score doesn'tmean anything, you know, there's no
unless you're talking about net statistics, which where it matters a little bit in
that it got away from us andthey beat us, and good for them.
They they needed that win. Itdidn't matter. You know, when

(03:10):
when they get their rings, it'snot going to say on their ring,
oh they lost by twenty at homethe right state. No, I don't
think so. All it's going tosay is is Horizon League champions And Jared
Calhoun, the coach at Youngstown, called me this morning and he goes,

(03:30):
you must be feeling really good.I said, well, I feel a
lot better today than I did immediatelyafter the game. And he goes,
you realize that you just won theHorizon League in the best the Horizon League
has been in twenty five years, top to bottom. Yet no doubt and
that I didn't say that. That'sanother coach in the league, and right,

(03:52):
and and and you know, Ithought about what he said, and
he's right. I mean, there'sthere's eight teams in this league that're gonna
went close to twenty games. There'seight teams that can beat anybody. The
tournament's going to be, you know, and now you know I can.
I don't even want to go there. I'm just saying that let's just enjoy
what we've done, let's finish itSaturday, and then let's get ready for

(04:13):
the tournament, because tournament's going tobe great college basketball. It really is.
I mean, who knows what's gonnahappen. This could be the first
year that they've done this, thatthere could be multiple home court losses in
the first round of the tournament, and both the first round and the quarterfinals.
There could be multiple home losses, and I don't think you can predict
who the four teams are that aregoing to make it to Indianapolis. I

(04:34):
really don't. We've battled so hardall year to get that home court,
but we're seven and three on theroad this year, seven and three on
the road in the league plays. You know that's doing some work, no
doubt, right, So you knowthis may be the one year that the
home court doesn't mean as much,But I don't care. We accomplished what

(04:56):
we wanted to accomplish. This teamthat you know, went to Italy,
learned a lot about themselves, camein, battled injuries in NSA ruling with
Peru in the early time, lostan exhibition game, played unbelievable at Ohio

(05:16):
State in Illinois, beat a Quadone team at Xavier, and then got
beat by twenty thirty at home twicein league play. It's a weird,
weird, but it's college basketball atits finest, and that's why college basketball
is what it is and why weall love it. It's anything can happen,
and we persevered through it and wona championship. So I can't tell

(05:40):
you. I'm as excited as Ican possibly be. And fans, remember
you canet involved in the show too. On Twitter. Send a tweet,
put the hashtag ask Campy on there. We will read those. We got
some starting to trickle in as well, not the usual workload of ask camp
Be questions. So if you've gotsomething you've wanted to know, nobody can
be critical right now. That istrue. And Deeke Hughes addressed the yellow

(06:00):
shoe situation, So there's really nowhereto go, right I mean, yeah,
the only people that want to dowant to want to be critical.
They don't want to you know,so what the hell? Yeah, but
I probably won't get any questions togo ahead and fire from Marty. Probably
Marty will probably send something, Yeah, Mark, Marty probably will out there
in Pittsburgh. Great to see himby the way at Robert Moore. Yeah,
we ran into him. He Uhwhat a great guy that guy is,

(06:25):
you know. So that whole storyis, uh, many years ago
we played at Pittsburgh, and peoplethat have been around the long time though
that we had him by eighteen witheight minutes to go, and with eight
minutes with fifty seconds ago we hadhim by eight and Travis Vators at the
free throw line a ninety three percentshooter and he missed the front end of

(06:46):
one in one and we lost anovertime complete utter collapse and one of still
one of the losses that just digat me my, you know, and
will my whole life. Marty wasgiven two tickets to that game for his
birthday present, and that's when hefirst saw Oakland, and I don't know,
he felt sorry for me or somethinglike that, and he reached out
to me after the game, andwe just went back and forth on social

(07:10):
media, and now he donates theprogram. He shows up at the Youngstown
game. He went through he wentthrough our press guide or whatever and found
out what, you know, howwe ask questions like what's what's your favorite
snack and things like that to theplayers, and he wrote it all down,
went to out and bought every oneof them their favorite snack and showed
up at our hotel and gave themtheir snack. I mean, this guy's

(07:34):
unbelievable, and so it was great. I let him sit on the end
of the bench. He didn't geta technical, so I'm happy absolutely,
and he would have if we wouldhave let him. He would he wants
us to win as bad as asI want us to win. No.
But speaking of that, that gameon Thursday night as well at Robert Morris

(07:54):
really the win, Camp, AndI'll bring this kind of full circle.
That win at Robert Morris really waswhat gave you gave the program the breathing
room. You know, in termsof the right right state loss, you
still control your fate. Nothing reallychanges. You get a win Saturday night
against Detroit, you're the undisputed champions. As Bruce Buffer would say at UFC,
you'd be the undisputed champions of theHorizon League. And you brought it

(08:18):
up to that seven and three roadmark. That's not common, Camp.
Even the teams that have quote unquoteran through the Horizon League don't go seven
and three on the road in theconference, right. And I'll just say
this, Yes, I want theundisputed and we're going at it. But
ten years from now, this team'scoming back, and when they introduce them
at halftime of a game, Iprobably won't be alive. But when they

(08:43):
introduce them at halftime, they're notgoing to say, oh, the co
champion or they're going to be theHorizon League champion, whether we win Saturday
or not, and I just hateanybody that's critical of that. We're the
champions and if we if we loseSaturday, then Youngstown they'll say they're champions
too. In Wright State probably wouldbe a three way time. But we'll

(09:03):
still be We'll still be the numberone seed. And unfortunately the NIT,
they kind of screwed the mid majorsover this year because what if you're the
number one seed, you automatically gotin the NIT In past years, if
you'll remember a few years ago,we won the conference and we got beat

(09:24):
in the tournament, but we wentto the NIT. We beat Clemson at
Clemson in the n T which isstill a great, great win. We
might be able to get in then I T because our RPI is still
below one hundred and things like that, but it's not a guaranteed thing anymore
if we're until this year, thenumber one seed was always guaranteed playing postseason.
So that's that's where someone bothers them. But our goals go to the

(09:48):
NCA Tournament. Our guys are committedto that. Everything we've done all year
has been to prepare for March, and uh you know, it's funny.
You know the people that have beenvery critical of losing Saturday, and trust
me, you may not know this, but it's been unbelievable of some of
the things that I've gotten. AndI would just say to them, So

(10:11):
if we would have lost at RightState but beat them Saturday at our place,
that would have made any difference.Yes, Saturday, Yeah, yeah,
we won. Think about when wewant a Right State. That's the
game that put us in position towin the league because we just come off
a devastating loss at Northern Kentucky andit was devastating. We have four point

(10:33):
lead in the ball right with minuteto go and we lose. And our
guys gathered themselves with one day prepand went into Right State and one going
away, and that's the game thatput us in position. Now you go
to Fort Wayne and win. Nowyou're gonna win. I walked off the
floor at Fort Wayne. I knewwe were going to win the championship.

(10:56):
Knew it. And if you flipflop that and lose it Right State instead
of Saturday, we've lost two ina row, I don't know if we
win it four way, And soyou play and that's why we preach to
our players. There's twenty hurdles andyou just got to worry about one at
a time and clear them. Andwe've got such a big stack of cleared
ones that it didn't matter what happenedSaturday. And so that's what I would

(11:20):
say to those people. But Idon't get a chance to talk to them
face to face because they just sendme emails and write crap on you know.
So it is what it is thatalways blows me away too, Like
somebody takes the time to sit downand write an email to you about that
stuff. Yeah, that's why. That's my job. That's my job.
It is. It's wild to me, man, it's absolutely wild. No.

(11:41):
But but can't I mean, whatcan you do? Send them a
ring? Huh? Yeah, maybewe'll send them all everybody a ring?
Huh. I just bought a lotteryticket. If I if I win the
lottery, I buy everyone a ring. All right. That's that that that
seems fair. The Greg Campy Showbrought to you by Henry Ford Sports Medicine,

visit Henry Ford dot com. Backslashathlete Tone Hunter will join us on the
Greg Campy Show. Here a littlebit. Yeah, I love Tone Hunter.
I'm so lucky he came to Oakland. I mean, this guy's one
of the smartest basketball players that I'vebeen around. He's been devastated by injury

(12:26):
all year and he's fought through it. He's probably shouldn't be playing. I
tell him his legs are made ofglass, but uh, he probably shouldn't
be playing. But he's battled through. He's wearing a brace. And when
you're when your game is based onspeed and you've had knee injury, ankle
injury, you know, injury afterinjury to your legs, it's got to
be very frustrating. And you seeit once in a while in him.
You can just see it in hisface because things are going so well and

(12:48):
he could be such a big partof it, and he's just battled and
battled. And I think, Ithink when we get into March Madness,
it would not surprise me if hemakes the play that wins US the championship
because the kids battle his butt off. Yeah. Interesting story. Two.
He's from Las Vegas. He andI talk about that. I'm always curious
about that. So we'll get intothat. I'm going to say that he
knows what the lines and the spreadsare. A no, no, we're

(13:09):
not going to talk about that. No, well, well I'll talk about
it's bowling though. We oh hecan bowl, yeah, but you know
what he lied? Oh yeah,he said, oh, I'm only going
to bowl this, and then hebowled about fifty pins over. So he's
like the opposite of He's the oppositeof Isaiah Jones. Then right right,
Isaiah Jones said he's gonna bowl oneseventy and he did bow seventy. Yeah,
forgot the one. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, And I put Isaiah

(13:31):
on my team, which really upsetme. Absolutely No, But we'll talk
about that with Tone Hunter. ButCamp, I mean, I guess,
I guess when you look at ittoo. You saw in that game in
Right State on Sunday, actually yesterday, the ebbs and flows of college basketball

(13:52):
game, and it is such amomentum sport. And we saw Right State
come out and do what they did. We saw us answer the bell.
We went on a run as well. They went on the last run obviously
to finish the game off. Butwho's the best team in the country this
year? I mean, who do. People don't really know. Was Houston's
number one? I would say YukonUniversity other than Oakland. Who's the numbers

(14:13):
number two? Yeah, Yukon,Purdue, Yeah, who Houston. They've
all been beaten by over twenty points. Yes, every one of those top
three four teams. Yukon got beatby twenty three the other night. Nobody
nobody's afraid of that. I mean, nobody's Their fans aren't going, oh,
will never win again because we lostby twenty three, right, I
mean, this is college basketball today. The kids are older, you know,

(14:37):
the transfer portal, you recruit olderkids. You you don't replenish with
young guys and go through through thatanymore. Now you replenish your program with
older guys. And because of that, you know, you just see the
Purdue's lost by twenty some, Yukon'slost by twenty some, Kansas, Kansas
has lost by twenty some. Kentucky. Kentucky loses at LSU and then goes

(15:03):
to Alabama, who's the hottest teamin the country, and beats him one
seventeen to ninety three at Alabama.Right? Was it at Alabama or am
I embellishing? I don't remember anybody. Then we'll just say it just to
make my point. I mean,it just it's college basket. It's why
it's so great. Yeah, Imean camp beat Yukon has doesn't have a

(15:24):
road win against the ranked teams. It's twenty fourteen, they're number one,
and they won the national champion thenational championship. Yes two since then.
Wow, But you know, thinkabout yesterday and just look at some of
the things that happened. We runa play to put us in the lead
in the first half and Rocket fumblesthe ball and they call traveling. It's

(15:46):
a dunk or a layup. Rightright, DQ's coming down the court with
the ball and Trey's running and he'swide open. And DQ while we're in
that run where they've taken the leadand we've got to fight back, and
DQ throws him at pass. Ithits him in the hands, he doesn't
catch it, it goes out ofbounce. How many short laps did we

(16:06):
miss? How many? You know? It was just one of those days
and you can't play. One ofthe problems is you play thirty. Sometimes
you can't play thirty sometimes without theebbs and flows that you're talking about.
And yesterday wasn't our day. Imean, those little things went against us.
And when you play a team that'splaying really, really well as they
did in the second half, you'regoing to lose. And that's what happened.

(16:30):
It happens to you cut, ithappens to Kentucky. It happened.
I mean, if you watch theKentucky LSU game, which it's one of
the few games I did get tosee, Kentucky's dominating the game and LSU
makes three or four threes, getsback in the game, it gets the
flow going. And it's college basketball. You got a lot of great players
in this country. And if youlook around the Horizon League right now and
again, Coach Calhoun and I weretalking about this this morning because you know,

(16:53):
we're talking about it's time, gettingtime to vote for your all league
teams. In that there are moreguys this year that could be Player of
the Year than at any time inthe forty years that I've been a college
basketball head coach and voted for theall conference team. There are more players
in our league that could be Playerof the Year than at any other time

(17:17):
in my profession. You got Ican't pronounce their names. Whats guy at
Cleveland State and Aruna. You've gotWarwick, You've got Noel Renald, Noel
Reynolds. At Green Bay. WrightState's got three guys, Tanner Holding,
Tray Calvin, Trey Calvin, andthe big kid that I mean. I

(17:38):
thought he was the best player onfour. Oh no, no, I
thought yes, in Saturday's game, their Sunday's game. He I thought he
was the best player on four.He played better than any of our guys.
He played better than any of theirguys in that game. Fort Wayne's
got that point guard. I don'tthink he's quite player of the Year,
but you but their coach does.I'm sure you got Trey Townson, right,

(18:03):
yep. I mean last year whoit was Antoine Davis or Cole Hill
at at at Youngstown. There wasno way that Jalen Moore, as much
as we wanted Jalen nobody was,you know, Jalen Moore's first team All
League player, but we finished fifth, so he won. The year before
that, you had Antoine and JamalKaine, and they gave them both because

(18:26):
by far and away they were thetwo guys, you know. So when
you have that many good players, you have that many good teams, and
that's why the league's so good, because every one of those teams got a
guy that, on a given night, can win a game. You know
the strength of our team is,yeah, Tray can do that. But
the strength of our team is wehave and the reason we're champions is because

(18:47):
we have seven or eight guys thatcan go win a game. I mean,
Tony Hunter. I can't remember whatgame it was. We wouldn't have
won the game if he hadn't gonein and gotten three steals and tripped it
away, went down, made anunbelievable pass got us. It was a
home game, right? Was itthe Milwaukee game? Man? I can't
remember when my car's parked right now? I's tone, I'll a'st tone when
he comes down here. I'm surehe remembers camp. Real quick questions.
I think I'm right out back here. Yeah, okay, real quick question

(19:10):
for you before we cut to thebreak. I'm curious about this. When
you're watching the LSU can talk. How do coaches watch games? Do you
watch it like I like boxing inUFC because I don't have to like talk
about or anything. I can justsit there and be entertained. Is that
how you do it or no,No, I only watch. The only
reason I get to watch enough basketball, right right, the reason I watch,
I try and watch certain coaches andI want to see what they're doing.

(19:33):
You know, everybody has. It'slike I tell our players when we
put our sets in and things likethat, it isn't the set, it's
the execution of the set. Andthen it's figuring out when to call it
and how to get the ball toyour best players. Right, So when
I know a Kentucky's got this guard, they've got right, and what was
he at thirty eight or something theother night at Alabama ten for ten from

(19:56):
the floor or whatever. How didthey get him their shots and then steal
from them? You know, Ohthat little screen or that little action.
If we take that little action andadd it to this bunch series that we
have, maybe that gets dq wideopen round. But you don't steal it
because you name it after him typicallyin the playball for sure. Yeah,
so that's not stealing. I amnot smart enough in any way, shape

(20:18):
or form to invent anything other thanthe everybody out of bounce on the basis
and that and I did. Inever get credit for it, but that
was out of necessity. Do wehave time to tell that story or not?
Yeah? Sure, So here's howhere's how that came about. You
know, I'm talking about when you'relate in the game and you put everybody
out of bounce. We played NorthernMichigan. This is how long ago that

(20:41):
was in the bubble, in thebubble, nineteen ninety six, ninety seven,
something like that, And we're uptwenty three with two and a half
minutes to go, and we madetwo free throws with three seconds to go
to win by one. Think aboutthat, twenty three with two minutes to

(21:02):
go, minutes to go, becausethey would score and we couldn't get it
in. I had a bunch ofslow great we had a really good team,
but we weren't very athletic. Wewere all six four to six'
five. We didn't really have anybodycould dribble, and we just had guys
that could shoot, and we wouldwear you down make shots, and so
we couldn't get it in. Weweren't athletic enough to get open. So

(21:25):
you know they have that play whereyou know, you take it out and
a guy jumps out of bounce andyou throw it to him. So I
took that and said, well, why can't we just put off I was
a football player, Why can't wejust have a bunch formation over here and
then run and knock people off andthrow it into the guy, run crossing
routes and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, So I did it in
the first game, and the refereetold me that. He said, you

(21:47):
can't do it, and he gavethem the ball and I said, you're
gonna get in a lot of troublebecause you can do that, and so
he got reprimanded. The referee gotreprimanded, and then we did it for
a couple of years, and thenwe did it again and referee again said
you can't do that. He didn'tgive us a turnover. He just blew
the whistle and came over to meand said, you can't do that.
And I said to the guy,I go, you either let us do

(22:08):
it or you're gonna get suspended. And that pissed him off, and I
said, we've gone through this before. We've done this in the NCAA tournament.
You know, if we can doit in the nca tournament, I'm
sure we can do it against YoungstownState or whoever the hell we were playing.
And he got reprimanded. So,you know, I guess that really

(22:29):
wasn't that good of a story, was it? You know what I was
gonna let you say it. Iwas expecting more. I guess I will
say it like that. But that'sright. Tone Hunter will delivered the goods
when he comes up here, andjust a cover somebody needs to minutes,

(24:48):
Greg Camby Show live at our Jay'sPump in Rochester Hills. My name is
Neil Rule, the voice of theGolden Grizzlies, and right now, as
promise, we are joined by ToneHunter here in in the house, the
native of Las Vegas, a transferfrom Garden City Community College, where he
was freshman of the Year last season'ssecond team All Conference performer, led the

(25:08):
team in scoring out there as well. Tone, what's going on, man?
How are you? Hell? Yeah? Thank you for having me.
Absolutely, it's good to have youup here. So it's funny because you
were talking about it and up hereon the TVs they're showing that the court
storming incident in wake Forest. What'syour thought on court stormy? I think
I know where the players stand outAs a player. Of course, you

(25:29):
know that's a dream, especially youknow, coming like event like next Saturday.
If something was like that to happen, you know, like that's something
you kind of dream of and youknow you want to be a part of,
especially because that's what we played for. We played for her school,
we played for our fans in ourcommunity. So I'm all for it.
I mean, yes, you knowit's dangerous a little bit, but as

(25:51):
far as just like the experience andyou know, just that moment, you
know, for your career, Iwould love for me to personally go through
it, So I like, Ilike that. I can tell, man,
I can absolutely tell. Don't justkind of your your thoughts on this
season now? For you personally,I know that that you've been banged up
at at various times and things likethat, haven't really been able to to

(26:12):
shake that at something that's kind offollowed you around. But as you look
at this team, I'm not gonnaask you, does this surprise you?
Because everybody on the team thought thatthis was going to be the story and
ultimately it was. But as youlook back at this season, you know,
what are your thoughts? Uh?It was everything we kind of just
expected it to be. I kindof knew coming in, especially me personally

(26:34):
being a junior, that I justdidn't have many more years left of college
to do everything you dreamed of.And that's why I came here honestly,
you know, playing at my lastschool last year, I kind of just
learned what it took to kind ofmake it to that next that you know,
that jump winning and losing and youknow, doing the things that we

(26:56):
had to do to win. Some coming here and talking to coach KMF,
that was like the number one thingwe were talking about all the way
back in What was that I don'twant to say a date too early to
get coached in trouble, but earlier. Yeah, recruiting recruiting process. That
was such a great media where inthe recruiting process there never date yourself,
Yeah never. That was just oneof the main things we talked about in

(27:21):
our recruitment and trying to recruit playersand you know, moving forward, that
was just the main goal is toget to the tournament. So once the
first day we got here, weall talked and we all came together,
it was you just felt it atthat moment. It was just something clicked,
Like I can't explain it, probablyno one on our team really could
explain it because it's just something there. But you kind of just felt it

(27:42):
like when we first all came together. It's just something clicked. Uh,
Tony, I wanted to ask youabout this as well because I asked Jack
about this. Now now you youcame to the JUCO route. Uh so,
certainly at Garden City, the jayfor those who don't know, the
Jayhawk League is about as good asit gets as far as JUCO basketball goes.
But with that being said, uh, let me paint this picture for

(28:03):
you. You're you're at Ohio State, right and there's there's twelve thousand you
know, fans in the stands, and it's a big ten school and all
that kind of stuff. And youcome out there, you know you're you're
able to score eight points. Whenright before the jump ball, did you
did you catch yourself kind of lookingaround for a moment and saying, wow,
like this is this is what I'veseen on TV. This is why
I'm here right now? Of course, you know, uh, places like

(28:27):
Ohio State, Illinois last year forme, and some places U S L
a USC like those are incredible placesto play. And then you know,
going to Ohio State and my coach, au coach was really big Ohio State
fans. So you know, onceyou go to places where people are talking
about and uh, you know howOhio State fans are. They they don't

(28:49):
never stop talking about Ohio State. So you know, I was really mad
that we didn't win because everybody haveanother fan base, Cowboy fans. I
mean that's one other one. Yeah, no doubt, but no, for
sure. It was like places likethat where you just hear people talk about
in really big fans and you know, just the atmosphere. Those are just

(29:11):
really really fun places and it's it'scrazy that, you know, you played
basketball for all these years and youstill could get chills, you know.
So that's the best way to putit is. I just when you play
those type of games and those typeof moments, you just still get chells,
like the first time you ever playedbasketball. Talk with Tone Hunter here

Tone you were born and raised inLas Vegas, Nevada, which is which
is interesting to me. When wewent bowling when we were down in Ohio.
You you you told me you were, like, you know, in

(29:55):
Las Vegas. It's not like it'snot like growing up in your prototypical area,
your prototypical neighborhood or anything like that. There's there's not a there's not
a lot to get into in LasVegas, which which kind of surprised me
because you know, I always foundthat there's a lot to get into in
Las Vegas. But you know thatthat, you know, leaving that part
out that being said, you saidthat's where you kind of took up bowling

(30:17):
because it's something that you did inLas Vegas. What's it like growing up
in Las Vegas? Because I wouldimagine if you're if you're a resident of
Las Vegas, you're like, man, are these people ever gonna leave?
Uh? Oh? Is just likethat a little bit, isn't that?
Yeah? I know, you know, being twelve and you know you can't
get in certain places. Yeah, growing up, you you know, especially

(30:40):
being a casino in every corner there'salways a two things movie theater and bowling.
So uh, My brother is areally really really good bowler, like
really good bowler. I hate togive him that credit because I don't like
saying that he's better than me inanything, but he is. Yeah,
but he's better than me at bowling, but are better than him at basketball.
So so it works out for you. Yeah, look at me and

(31:00):
look at him. You know,I love you, big bro. No,
he's listening right now. Yeah, yeah, but that just shows just
another side of me. It wasanother thing to be really competitive at.
You know, it was always funto do. You know, Like I

(31:21):
said, there wasn't much to doin Vegas being a kid. So that's
just like little memories and little thingsout I just always forever be grateful for
and and you know, we stillbond over that. You know. There's
a lot of times where it beme and my brother go bowling my sister
or me and my grandma. Likethat's just a really big thing we do.
You know in Las Vegas is bowlSo you know, it's just something

(31:42):
I just catched on to do onthe side, something a lot of people
might not know. However, LasVegas is one of the basketball capitals of
America. I mean, when whenyou look at what goes on out there.
Obviously a lot of draft prep goeson there. Bishop Gorman out there
as well. There's a couple ofbasketball powerhouse is uh, there's a lot
of off season training that goes onin Las Vegas. US say, basketball

(32:04):
is always out there as well,it is, right like it's one of
those unofficial basketball there's always somebody outthe summertime. It's it's crazy. I
tell DQ a lot. You know, maybe I could sneak them out to
Vegas for a couple of days toget get in some gyms, but I
just telling him some of the storiesand tell some of the guys the stories.
You know, I've done played againsta lot of just talented people that

(32:25):
you know, just by being grateful, grace at the right time, knowing
the right people, being in someof the gyms and those draft workouts and
meeting a lot of cool people anda lot of cool players. So that's
why I also like living in Vegas. I'm a really big basketball freak.
You know, I'm always watching basketball. I'm always just you know, trying
to learn something. I don't knowwhat it is that the game just very

(32:49):
fascinates me. In like different areasso well, because Camp talked about that,
and you see it anybody that's aroundthe game to any degree, if
you were a practice, if youwere in a game, you you can
see it. I know sometimes likethe motor gets sped up and stuff like
that. That's nature of the positionyou play. But at the same time
you study the game. Yeah, yeah, I'm just really big. I
just love the game. You know, I'm just very grateful to be here.

(33:12):
So you know, I just takeevery moment that I can because you
know, injury kind of humble meas far as just my thought process of
playing, playing in the game andit being appreciative. So now I'm really
just big on just learning. Andit helped my teammates, you know.
You know there's a lot of timeyou guys see Camp be yelling at me.
But I promise you there's sometimes helistens to me and I could you

(33:34):
know, sneak up, sneak andplaying there too. You get one word,
Yeah, I get I can.I could sneak a worder or a
play or two in and He'll lookat me and be like, you know,
good job. You know that's Iyou know, I think of it
like that, and you know,It's like I said, it's just grateful
to be here because that's something thatme and can't be talked about coming here.
So to be able to connect withyour coach, and your coach to

(33:55):
trust you to you know, goover there and run that and I'm not
involved at all. You know, that just tells you how much you know,
we're just you know, he trustesme, and he sees the same
things that I see, all rightto on last one for me here the
point guard lineage here at Oakland, going going back to Jonathan Jones and Reggie
Hamilton and certainly obviously into Kay Felderand Jalen Moore. I imagine that Coach

(34:19):
Campy probably didn't have to sell youtoo hard then, right, Uh No,
uh, not at all. Iremember getting you know, first ever
talking to Campy and Juco and thosenames that you just say, and then
being a really really big college manand knowing Kay Elder and just you know,
just really sitting back and understanding, you know, that's where Kay Helder

(34:42):
played at and this is the coachthat coach k Helder, and so it
wasn't really much to sell me on, you know, it was you know,
I tell him if it wasn't forKansas, to be honest, I
don't know if anybody really knows aboutthe Western fair hammersphere of Kansas. I
would have been in Oakland earlier, but I couldn't do the cold again,
Nicole, really really, so Itry to sneak to the West coast.

(35:02):
You know, my heart got mehere, so you know, yeah,
it wasn't much to seven tho forreal. Well, you talked about the
fact that you're grateful to be here. We're grateful that you're here too as
well. Tone Hunter. Everybody hereon the Greg Campy Show appreciate the time.

(37:58):
Yep, the cows are certainly certainlyhappy. Right now, Camp, you
ready to do some ask? AskCamp, I hope they're really good ones?
All right? Well here's a Ihope they're really good ones? All
right, we'll start with this one. Then, Camp, you were talking
about the pizza that kind of wentby our face here but not landed on
our table. Jonathan wants no pineappleor no pineapple on pizza. Oh no,

(38:21):
I'm not a I like pineapple,I do, but I would never
put it on pizza. Never.I'm sorry, I just never would.
I mean, I mean, whothis man? First of all, ruins
the ham? Right? Isn't thereham on that too? What about bacon?
Can't ruin bacon. I'm not abig bacon guy. Can you imagine
that? I'm not. I'm asausage guy. I'm not a big bacon

(38:42):
guy, but I love sausage onpizza. But Camp, the back of
the room here is outraged right now. Yeah, I'm well not that good
of a mood either. So youjust want to bring everybody down, right?
Who the hell puts pineapple on pizza? Man? Everybody? Everybody?
You notice the pro pineapple crowd. They're vocal about it too, like they're

(39:06):
they're they're motivating as they get chastisedabout it. I'm sure when they order
it and people look at them like, what are you doing? They got
thick skin, you're saying, right, kind of like me right now,
Austin Davis, who's here in thecrowd, This is nowhere near as uh,
you know, this is nowhere nearthe controversial topic that pineapple on pizza
is, Austin says, who issitting here. As a matter of fact,

(39:29):
I might be biased as a fanof court storming, but with the
latest controversy from the Duke game, what are your thoughts on court storming?
No, I think, uh,if you've ever been involved in it,
I think you can see where somepeople are coming from. But I think
that what I hope they don't banit. I know a lot of a

(39:52):
lot of conferences have put fines inif they allow it, but I hope
they don't ban it. But Iwould just say, if you go look
at the Creighton Yukon game and youwatch how Creighton handled the court storming,
perfect way to handle it. Theykept the people from off until Yukon got

(40:15):
to their bench, and then theywalled off the bench in the tunnel area
and you can see the picture ofit. You can see three quarters the
court is full of you can't seethe court, and then there's an area
like a little pond, you know, where it's just the court. Because
they did, they managed it,and I think you have to understand the
expectations of your fans. We've courtstormed here. I'll never the greatest court

(40:38):
storm I'll ever have I ever saw, because when you're a parent and you
have kids that are a coach's kid, you never really understand it. And
so the last year that we wentto the nca Tournament in Sue Far,

(41:00):
it was an easy win, right, I think we won by fifteen or
twenty points to a championship game. But yet our fans that were there court
stormed it, court stormed. AndI never pay attention that kind of stuff.
And when I got home, Irewatched a game and there I see
two of my kids running out ontothe court, and it was it was
one of the coolest things I'd everseen. And I just why take that

(41:22):
away from people? College basketball isso different than professional basketball. Why would
you even want to take that away? That's something that's exciting and you want
to happen. You just got itnow because of instant you know, the
Caitlin Clark thing I think is whatstarted it. And then this, of
course Duke's involves so of course, yeah, you know, so I think

(41:45):
you could see it banned for sure. I just hope it isn't. Yeah,
No, I agree with you becausepeople have to remember too when when
Duke loses, America wins. Youknow, for the most part, I
still say that, No, youdidn't say that, that was that was
me that that said that. Butit's doesn't make it less true. Nobody
listens to you anyways. Well, see, there you go. I'm pushing
it to the limit right now.Send your questions with the hashtag ask Campy.

(42:08):
We got some more in here.Argent says, from November to present
day, you guys have been ableto rebound from adverse situations. With how
close yesterday's loss was to the endof the season, how do you motivate
the team to keep playing at ahigh level. I thought you threw me
for a loop there when he saidwith how close yesterday's loss was, and

(42:28):
then you paused, and I wasthinking it wasn't close yesterday, So how
do we handle that. I don'tthink there's an issue with it all.
You know, we're going into SeniorNight, and for the people sitting in
here, many of the people sittingin here tonight know how important Senior Night
is to Greg Campy. They knowwhat that knight's like in the arena.

(42:49):
They know, you know, ourtradition of Senior Night, I think is
as good as anybody's in the country. It's always a special day and our
kids will be ready to play inDetroit. You have a chance for an
outright championship. It's like I senthim a text this morning and I said,
yeah, you've won the ring,But what's the ring going to say
on it? You know, what'sthe ring going to say. Is it

(43:12):
going to say co champion, Isit going to say champion, Is it
going to say NCAA Tournament. Isit going to say sweet sixteen? What's
the ring going to say? Sowe have a lot more to accomplish and
they're focused, laser focused to us. As we've said all year, and
you've heard me in press conference afterpress conference, everything we've done this year
is for that tournament. We understandthat if we win Saturday and we win

(43:39):
outright championship that there are, andthen we get beating the conference tournament.
There are going to be people thatare upset and say, oh my god,
you choked again. You didn't win. It's been a decade. What
you know, we understand that,we accept that, and we've put everything
and every effort into winning to turnbut you know what, it's really hard

(44:00):
to do. It's really hard todo. If you look at since two
thousand and five to two today, and you look at conference tournament championships in
the state of Michigan. Oakland's wonhow many anybody you know? Three?

(44:21):
Right? How many is Michigan won? One? Three, three, three?
How many is Michigan State won?Eight? No, four? Four?
Right? Western Michigan's runt one one, Detroit's one one, Central Michigan's

(44:44):
won one, Eastern Michigan's won one. Since two thousand and five, it's
hard to win a conference tournament.Think about that, Michigan State. But
they go every year, right becauseif all you gotta do is finished in
the top five or six, Imean, they're what eighth right now in

(45:05):
the Big ten and they're talking aboutgoing. But for us, you've got
to win it, right, it'shard to do. I've had We've probably
should have won three or four more. I'll acknowledge that, but we haven't
because it's hard to do. Thepressure on those kids because what as bad
as you want to go as fans, it's not even close to how bad

(45:27):
they want to go. And thepressure that they put on themselves, it's
unbelievable. And that's why a guylike Isaiah Brock leaves the basket to block
a three that he didn't do itall year. He leaves the basket to
go block a three point shot thathe had no chance to get to but
he wanted it so bad, andthey throw it underneath and shoot a lab
and beats. It's why it's stupidplays happen, and it's what makes tournament

(45:52):
play so great. So it iswhat it is. Man, We're gonna
do everything we can. Gary McCarrickwants to know. Hey, Camp put
about a wall of accomplishments in thearena for former players succeeding in their post
college basketball careers, like Ryan Hooverwith the Bucks, Travis Bator with the
Nets, Jordan Hollinstein with the Spurs, to name a few. I can't
even get our banners back up,and you want me to put a wall

(46:14):
of that. Take a number,Kerry, take a number. Somebody tweeted
at me today, Way to raiseanother banner? Where are we raising?

(46:34):
You don't have him at your house? Camp? No? No, all
right, Wes Levy, this isthe last one here camp before we get
out, Coach. Was great tosee Martes Walker visiting you on the bench
at halftime a few weeks ago atthe arena. First, how is Martes
doing? And does dke you Colekind of remind you a little bit of
Martes's game. Well, they're bothsix to four, and they're they're both
left handed, and they both canhave a funny shot. So yeah,

(46:55):
he reminds me a lot. DeeQ's a little bit better with the ball
than Martes. Martes is probably abetter mid range shooter, but they're very
similar. And you guys, Idon't believe have seeing what DQ is yet.
You know, I think next yearyou're going to see that when he's
featured. You know, we alwayswhen Trey makes first team All League.

(47:21):
This week, it'll be the eighteenthconsecutive year that we've had an All League
player, which is As I've saidat this show before, only one other
school in the history has done that, and that's Gonzaga. Right, So
next year, if it's going tobe nineteen, it's probably going to be
DQ cole. But he'll be featuredin the offense. A lot of that
stuff we run for Blake, alot of the stuff we run for Goalkie,

(47:43):
it will be being run for forDQ. We've got we've got to
get point guard play that can sowe can move him off there and get
him the ball. You know,it's really important that we recruit some point
guards to be able to do that. But yeah, I think they're They're
very similar. They're different personalities.DQ's personality is tremendously different than Martes's,

(48:07):
but they come from a similar background. And yeah, I love both of
them. I mean, they're greatkids, and it was great to see
Martes. All Right, we willtake our final break, come back.
It's time to talk about that schooldown the road. That's right, Detroit

to the Greg camp Bey Show. We're live at r J's Pub and Rochester
Hills. Final segment of the showtoday, and remember Greg Campy Show brought
to you in part by r J'sPub right here in Rochester Hills. You
guys know you sample the food. You know the whares, you smashed,
the season fries, all of that, So you guys certainly know what's going

(50:57):
on here. Whin's the last timeyou had some season fries? By the
way camp during while Tone was speaking, he gives us back in the corner
and he put him in front ofme. I go gives I can't eat
him. I've lost sixty pounds, man, I can't eat those and he
left them there and they're all gone. All right, we'll pivot camp.

(51:19):
And so, speaking of social media, we just wrapped up the ass campy
portion of the show. I sawa tweet that you put out earlier today,
kind of a cool picture with Treyand Chris and then Trey and Chris
training Chris as boys and Tray andChris has met. Yeah, if you
haven't seen that and you have Twitter, I would recommend you go take a
look at it. Nicoley, Trey'smom sent me that picture this week,

(51:42):
and every once in a while shepulls a picture out when you know he
was at our camp, or youknow, when I know it's getting close
to the in for Trey and she'sprobably feeling bad about it, right,
you know, because of how muchOakland basketball has meant for him, and
I think Senior night going to bejust a special night I hope for him.
And I can't tell you how happyI am that we want a championship

(52:05):
and he got because his whole lot, he's been in the gym when we've
cut nuts down, he's been inthere, you know, a five year
old, a ten year old campand for it to come true for him.
But if you if you look atthat picture I sent out, you
have got to say, who thehell is Oakland Strength coach? Right?
And I mean Terry, you havejust got to pat When you see Terry,

(52:30):
you got a pat man. Youdo good work all right. Now.
We do have a nutrition program andwe do have a nutritionist, but
Terry's he's the man boy. Andthere's there's proof of it. And I'm
so happy she sent me that picturebecause every kid we recruits going to see
that picture, those two pictures sideby side, every kid we recruit,

(52:51):
because you talk about, uh,you know, do people get better,
do they get bigger? Do theyget stronger? How how do they mature
over their time in college? Imean a picture speaks a thousand words,
and that one does. So I'mpretty cool I think that's pretty cool,
absolutely speaking, a pretty cool thisSaturday night college basketball. The Oakland University

(53:14):
Credit Union Arena, six o'clock, the Golden Grizzlies, Detroit Mercy, the
Metro Series, a conference championship, you know, solo hanging in the balance
camp, all of that. Thisis this is college basketball Saturday night.
I hope to see everybody out therego to Goldengrizzlies dot com for tickets.
If you don't have them yet, well, that part of it will take
care of itself. What I needeverybody to do. Everybody in this room

(53:36):
and everybody's listening to this show, and everybody that's at the game. I'm
very concerned that because the league madeit a double header, that you know
a lot of the fans are goingto be there for a long time.
And I'm very concerned the game's notstarting till six o'clock that at eight o'clock
when it's over, people are goingto want to leave, and I don't
want them to do that. I'drather you come at halftime, forget the

(54:00):
game. I'd rather you be therewhen the game's over so that those four
seniors have a large group of peopleto talk to and that we send them
off the way you know they deserveto be sent off. They get hugged,
and they get pictures and they youknow, we're on that court for
an hour after that game, youknow, giving them their due, just

(54:21):
because that means more than anything tome, way more important than that game
to me. We'll take care ofthe game. Well, we'll do our
job. I guarantee you we'll doour job. But that's what's more important.
So if that day's too long foryou, come at halftime. Camp.
I asked you this question often, but this is another moment where where
I think it applies. Just whenyou got here all those years ago,

(54:43):
did you see this? Did yousee you know, rival rivalries and you
know rivalry series and conference championships hangingin the balance and number one seats and
all that kind of stuff, CampNeil, I was twenty eight years old.
I didn't look at things like that. I was going to coach here
one year, win the national championship, and go coach at UCLA, right,

(55:04):
That's what I always said. Soyou know what we did get.
I did get to coach at UCLAa couple of times. Yeah, so
it worked, you know, Idid it but no, I didn't.
I mean, I just you know, that's a great question. But any
if you really know me and whoI am, that stuff, I mean,

(55:24):
it just takes care of itself.I just want to I want good
kids. I want those kids towalk out of here feeling that Oakland's the
greatest place they've ever been, becausethat's how I feel. And I want
them to. I want people tolove them, and I want them to
love Oakland, and more importantly,I want them and their teammates to be
bonded for life. And that's whatwe're trying to accomplish. And we win

(55:47):
games along the way, that's great. And we have, man, we
have, and you know, youlook at the list of players that have
played here. The thing I justsaid, eighteen years in a row.
If Trey gets Player of the Year, which damn it, he better if
we beat Detroit on Saturday, Isure think he should be Player of the
year. He'll be the sixth playerof the year in the last fifteen years

(56:09):
to play here. My god,you know, other than Gonzaga, North
Carolina Duke, where do you findthat? Right? You know? And
so our fans you have, Imean, you're pretty damn lucky to be
able to see that, and asa coach, I'm the luckiest guy in
the world to have coach those guysand to be part of that. So

(56:31):
I don't think about all that otherstuff. I just want, I want.
I'm so happy they're getting a ring. I can't tell you how happy
I am camp the game against Detroit. Then I know how you're going to
answer this. Certainly, you knowthey have not had the season that they
wanted to. I'll say it likethat. So that just tells you that
you know what snake pit you're walkinginto there on Saturday, this game.

(56:55):
You have no idea how it's goingto go. And if we're not prepared
and if we're not ready to play, it ain't gonna go well. And
I know one as somebody asked thequestion earlier, you guys since November have
come back from every and we willthat it's in this group's DNA to play
them one at a time. Andyou're never gonna play thirty one perfect games.

(57:19):
You're never gonna play thirty one badgames. And they're not gonna play
thirty one bad games. So youknow things haven't gone their way. But
there's a good one out there ofcoming. I hope for them it's in
the tournament, not Saturday, rightAnd yeah, and next week obviously at
the show we'll get into the tothe Horizon League tournament. Will know.
Do we have time? Yeah, sure'll we got about two minutes. Well,
just so everybody knows if green Bayloses, If green Bay loses Wednesday

(57:46):
at Cleveland State, we're the numberone seed. You can't there's if you
look at the next Gen stats andall that kind of stuff, I think
a percentage of us not being thenumber one seed is less than one percent.
That's probably because we have a ninetyeight percent chance of winning on Saturday,
which scares the hell out of me. But so it could be all

(58:07):
taken care of before we ever stepon the court on Saturday. But you're
still playing. If Youngstown's got to, you know, beat Detroit, and
you know, we need Youngstown tofinish second or third for that for that
to happen. So if Youngstown beatsDetroit on Wednesday and green Bay loses at

(58:28):
Cleveland State, where the number oneseed, no matter what, that's just
the mathematics of it. So we'llwe'll know, we'll know on Saturday what
we're playing for other than an undisputedchampionship. There it is. I think
that's a good place to stop ithere today. Appreciate everybody coming out to
our J's Pub in Rochester Hills,as you guys always do every week.

(58:50):
Man, just yeah, you guys. It's unbelievable standing room only here for
the show every week. I'd askyou, Camp, did you did you
think this day was coming where therebe standing room only for the great Camp?
Well, if we got a smallenough room it would, but this
pretty big room. So yeah,I'm pretty pleased with us. Yeah,
all right, hey, come tosee you, Neil, I know that.
Yeah, okay, I like that. I like that alright. So

(59:10):
for the head coach, Greg Campyand for Greg Hessen back in our twelve
seventy am the BET Studio's, myname is Neil rule All. Once again,
thanks everybody for coming out to theGreg Campy Show live from RJ's Pub
in Rochester Hills. We'll catch youguys next Monday as well. Thanks for
