It's time for the Greg Campy Show, presented by r j's Pub. Let's
go live to r j's Pub inRochester Hills. Here's Coach Campy and the
voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neil Rule. Welcome back to another episode of the
Greg Campy Show. We're live atRJ's Pub in Rochester Hills. My name
is Neil Rule. He is thecoach Greg Campy. There, you got

(00:23):
a full tank of gas. You'reready to go, right? We all
gas? Yeah? Yeah, allgas? No breaks? Yeah? What
I'm here? All right, goodto see camp A little bit of house
cleaning first. In your absence lastweek, the the kind fans of the
Greg Campy Show put a collection togetherand they charged me with This is a

(00:43):
labeled gas money for you. Ibelieve there's about six dollars in here,
so that is for you, anduh, you know, we just want
to make sure you can make itto your show. So a lot of
change in there. There is alot of change. Yeah, I appreciate
that from everyone. Thank you, thank you, and I'm here and you're
here, so let's get into tonsto talk about here. Certainly, coming

(01:06):
off a very very big win atWright State over the Raiders in camp,
like, getting the win is onething, but for me, it was
the style in which that you guysdid it. You led pretty much the
entire time and you were able toclose it out. Yeah, I was.
It was an I told them inthe locker room after the game that
was in the Trey Townsend Blake Lentman, are I think that's the best win

(01:27):
we've ever had, And you wouldsay, why is that? And it
was circumstantial. You know, youwere around the group. Thursday night at
Northern Kentucky was one of the mostdevastating losses we've had. You know,
we're in first place, We've wonnine out of ten, we've we've got
the ball up for with a minutethirty to go in a place that you

(01:49):
know, not many people go inand win, and we missed a shot
and then we make a I don'tknow what happened. The very smart player
made a really bad decision and itwas a flake I mean not flagrant.
That's that's the terminology today. Itwas just an intentional foul. Yep,
too hard of a foul and itwas the right call and they turned into

(02:10):
a four point play to tie it. We miss a point blank shot with
what twenty three seconds to go.I really I blame myself on that one.
I once I saw him get therebound, I should have helt for
a time out, which wouldn't havechanged it because they didn't score and it
went overtime, but it would haveassured us the last shot of the of

(02:30):
the game if I did that,And then it might have been off a
play where you know, we mighthave had one or two options. But
I mean, you give a firstteam maybe player of the year in this
league a point blank It was contested, but a point blank shot. I
mean I just I kind of justsaid we'll take the two point lead and
make sure they don't make a three. And it rolled around and didn't go

(02:52):
in. And you know, asa fan base we bitch and moan about,
you know, and as coaches, you run play and you get shots
to win games and they don't goin. I saw an unbelievable stat today.
I sent it to SMITTI in atext. Kentucky, who is what
maybe the all time winning his programin the history of college basketball, has

(03:15):
had twenty seven shots since twenty twentyto tie or win a game in the
last second and they've only made itonce. And at that I looked at
that stat and I couldn't believe it, you know, because you think about
over the last three or four years. I mean, Xavier hill Mays had
probably ten shots in his career totie or win a game, and I

(03:37):
think only one went in. Andyou know, oh, come on,
is it. You know, it'sjust a hard thing to do to make
a shot like that, a lotof time lucks involved, and you know,
you think of what Goki did atMissouri Milwaukee Milwaukee, you know,
to tie the game in overtime,to tie the game in regulation and then
make the shot in the second overtimeis kind of crazy that we had players

(03:59):
do that when you look at thestatistics show that they usually don't go in,
and Trey Shott just didn't go in. And we also, you know,
we didn't have a great shooting nightthere, but defensively, we did
everything we wanted to do and theymade They probably made thirteen tough twos.
Now probably, I know they madethirteen tough twos. And if you say,

(04:23):
draw up, okay, these arethe shots we want them to take,
and they made them. They gotgoing and they were in their backs
were to the walls as far asmaking the top four. If we go
in there and beat them, theywere going to be in a really bad
situation. They're still not in atough situation to make the top four,
and they did what they had todo, and that's what great programs do.
And so it was a devastating lossfor us. And then you're going,

(04:45):
you know, you're going from thefire to the frying pan to the
fire or whatever that statement is.If you got to go play at you
know, Wright State, who inthe last six seven years has been the
you know, those two schools havebeen the kind of the cow bells of
the league, and you know,we like to think we're up there with
them, but you know, overtime we probably are over amount of wins,
an amount of where you finish, but they've won more. You know,

(05:09):
we haven't been to the NCATE Tournamenta while. They've been to two,
and Northern Kentucky's been to three. So those are the two teams that
you're you know, you're fighting withand you got to go play there and
to come back and win, andto win the way we did. You
know, Right State is from anoffensive standpoint, reminded me a lot of

(05:30):
you know us when Keith Benson andBader and Reggie Hamilton were here, that
we were going to outscore people. You know, even though we did defend
well, we wanted to play fastand score one hundred points. And that's
what they've done this year. They'reaveraging high eighties. They lead the country
and field goal percentage. We showedour team before the game the top three
field goal percent in our league, the top three players field goal percent wise

(05:55):
in our league all play for RightState. Yeah, and I mean,
you never I've I've never seen thatbefore in all the years I've done this.
And to go in there and tohold them in there building the thirty
three percent and twenty something from thethree and sixty points was just an unbelievable
And if you listen to them intheir postgame, they can't believe they miss
shots and they did this. ButI think the reason it happened was,

(06:19):
you know, sure, they're goingto have some games the ball don't go
doesn't go in, but we controlledthe temple and I think d Q,
who's going to be here tonight totalk and uh Blake and Tone Hunter,
the three of them that had theball in their hands for the you know,
the forty minutes that we were outthere controlled the temple. We only

(06:39):
one or two times did we getout of sorts and fire quick three or
you know, Goki got a steallate in the first half and tried to
take off with it and that endedup being a turnover to a basket for
them. But for the most part, we never allowed them to get that
flow and to get the game goingfast, and that's why they scored sixty
points. Sure they missed shots, but it's a lot easier to make shots

(07:00):
in a flow than it is wheneveryone's a grind. And sure they got
some good looks that they missed, but they had to grind to get them,
and that's why we were able todo it, and to do that
coming off the loss. Where you'resitting, you know, if you look
at the last two years, we'vebeen in the first place to begin in
a February three straight years now.And the difference this year is our depth,

(07:23):
and also the difference might be thematurity of our team, how old
we are and how many years theseyou know, Tray's been here, and
Blake's been here, and Chris hasbeen here and handling adversity better than we
did, you know, in thepast, and it's a tremendous wind force,
and it puts us in a position. I mean, we win our

(07:44):
last we win our last five games, we're probably going to win the league.
You know, Green Bay, iftheir fans are listening, they're saying,
hey, wait a minute, whatare you saying. You know,
but if you look at the schedule, I mean they've got they've got to
play the top of the league whilewe're playing the bottom of the league.
And uh, you know, we'vealready gone through the top of the league

(08:05):
and have done quite well against it. And so it still might come down
to tie breakers, which we've talkedabout for all season long. And uh,
that's why we want Youngstown to wingames, because you know, we
got the tiebreaker with them in Milwaukee. We want those two teams to win.
So when you're looking at it andTrench side, who you want to
win, you want Milwaukee and inYoungstown to win because we hold tie breakers

(08:26):
with both those teams. Great CampusShow brought you by Henry Ford Sports Medicine,
the official team positions for Oakley Universityand you for more info, visit
Henry Ford dot com backslash athlete,Is that the longest you've gone without saying
a word in the show over theNo, No, not even close with
you can't Yeah, not even close. I don't know. I saw you
starting a twitch. I didn't know, no, not, I was just

(08:46):
watching TV camp. You know.Just all I do is bring you back
and forth to commercials. I wastold, I was told you struggle with
that, and when in my absence, yeah, I was really bad at
that. No. But but yeah, as coach Camp, he said,
diqu Cole will join us coming upin just a little bit, and don't
forget too. You can get involvedwith the show. Just send us a
tweet with the hashtag ask camp beattached to it and we will ask campy.

(09:09):
It's funny how that works. Thequestions are getting lined up right now
as a matter of fact. ButCamp, I mean just going back to
that right state game, the thingthat I really I guess I shouldn't have
been surprised by it in retrospect, but just how tough you guys were in
terms of dictating what you wanted todo to them. They were kind of

(09:30):
powerless to style. You have fortysix points in the paint. We were
talking about really all broadcasts long.I mean, you guys really imposed your
will in the paint and we're ableto have a lot of success. And
I give up my staff and ourplayers a ton of credit for that because
we had a one gay, onegame prep excuse me, a one day
prep for the game. And again, the mood was not good after Thursday

(09:52):
night, and they went about theirbusiness. They did their job, you
know, and they understood. Athalftime we held them to twenty four points,
I believe, and we had scoredtwenty six in the paint, so
we had actually outscored them. Youknow, we got the ball into the
basket. And Chris who's playing incase you didn't realize this, Chris Conway,

(10:13):
how he's changed and grown and youtalk about toughness played in that game.
He broke his thumb Thursday night atat at Northern Kentucky. Now it's
not a fracture, it's a Iforget what they called it, non displaced,
non displaced broken thumb is what Iwas called, which means, you
know, they can tape it up, and but that's in a shooting hand.

(10:37):
And he came out and made somebaskets early and as the game went
on, you could see it wasstarting to bother him. And thank god
Berrew played so well. But thetoughness that we showed in d Q,
you know, I'm not saying thisbecause he's here tonight, that he was
by far the toughest guy in thecourt. And you know, we ran
a play to him. We thoughtthat we could get to the rim on

(10:58):
them, and he has a specialhim in this game. So we ran
a play to him to start thegame to get to the rim, and
he got there and he missed itpoint blank layup. You know, a
lot of guys would have hung theirhead. He went and got the rebound
and scored, you know, andand that just kind of how the game
went. He just we were It'snot often, you know, you think
back to the days Allowed in Loveand Cole Gentry and Billy Wantner and those

(11:22):
guys that Wright States had over thelast six seven years, and you know,
we've lost some tough games to him, and we always walked away saying
they out toughed us. And Ithink they walked away the other night thinking
that Oakland out tough them, andthat's why we won. The game absolutely,
Camp, And just to kind ofwrap up the road trip, you
talked about it as well, theovertime loss at Northern Kentucky. I just

(11:46):
kind of my impression on that one. That was another game. Yes,
you guys fell in overtime, butthat was a game that you guys had
the majority of the of the controlin it. And throughout throughout the Horizon
League season Camp, I felt thatway pretty much every rise in THEGUE game
that you guys have played where whereyou have had control a majority a lot
of the time. Now, sometimesa snowball gets rolling downhill if you're on

(12:07):
the road or whatever, and thatcan be tough to deal with. But
at the same time, as awhole camp, you have to be happy
with the way this squad is playingright now because because the game does go
through you guys for large parts.Well, we've won ten of our last
twelve, so I think, obviouslyI gotta be happy with that. We
we had a heck of a preseasontwo against one of the toughest schedules in

(12:30):
the country. I mean, we'resitting here with sixteen wins, you know,
with five games still to go,and I think we're the eighth ranked
schedule in the country. So yeah, I mean, it's been a hell
of a season, but we've hadhell of the seasons before that have crashed
at the end, and that's Ifeel good about this team though, I
really do. I think that theyunderstand it, and what they did Saturday's
proof of that. So I hatethat we lost at Northern Kentucky just like

(12:54):
they do. And you got asix, you got four point ly with
the ball with a minute and thirtyto two go. You got to win
those games on the road if you'regonna win championships, and we didn't,
and we didn't allow it to becomea losing streak. And I do think
you're forgetting when you say we've controlledmost league games, you're forgetting the fort
Wayne game at our placeho, Isay, that's why I said most.

(13:15):
I looked at the film again ofthat we were down thirty at one point
at home, which you don't seevery often. So you know, Wednesday
is a huge, huge game forus. I know we'll talk about that
later, but you know, we'vegot we've got proved something Wednesday, and
if we do then I'll feel thenI'll talk more about Top four winning it.
It's perfect too that we got QCole coming up in just a couple

(13:35):
of minutes. And you and Ihave discussed this in the past camp,
but there's options for you now interms of scoring the basket. I'll talk
about like scoring the ball. DQ Cole scored the ball Saturday against Wright
State, and you have a plethorareally of options that can really score the
basketball. Yeah. What I likethe most about d Q on Saturday was

(13:56):
he was one for eight from thethree on Thursday and a lot of times,
especially him, because he's kind ofecquesced to our older players this year,
and we don't want him to dothat. We want him to be
a scoring threat. I want himwhen he has the ball to think score
and you know, to come outafter that game of one for eight.

(14:16):
A lot of guys would have youknow, I'll let Gokie shoot it,
I'll let Blake shoot it. Andone of the reasons we ran place to
him early was to try and gethim going. And like I said,
he missed a shot and had towherewithal to get the rebound score and then
he scored again. You know,he was quite the player for us on
Saturday. But we expect that fromhim. Now you know we need that

(14:37):
from him. I just expect it. We need it. All right,
Well, we will take our firstbreak. When we come back. I'll
be joined by d Q cole.Don't forget. Get your questions in on
Twitter with the hashtag ask Campy. We will get to those as well.

be sure at our good blocks forreal Christmas. We're joined by DQ coal,
everybody the Pawnee Ac native here inthe house, and there's a ton
of stuff I want to get towith DQ. I've been looking forward to
this conversation once I told DQ waswas sliding through the show here tonight.
But DQ I was on the busobviously on the way home. I was
going to ask you how you're doing. But that bus ride home, everybody

(17:18):
was doing fine, weren't they.Oh yeah, definitely, definitely. Everybody
was great. Yeah, you guys, you guys were excited. I'll just
say it like that, man.But DQ, like I said, a
ton of stuff I want to getto. But I guess we'll jump in
because the fans here are gonna riotif I don't ask you about this,
they'll start throwing chairs and everything.Everybody wants to know. What is the
difference between yellow shoe DQ coal andblue shoe DQ Coal. I wouldn't say,

(17:45):
there's really a difference. Always throughoutmy basketball career, I always wanted
to wear the brightest shoes, alwayshad the brighter shoes on the court.
So that was one of my superstitions. So when Colin ordered our shoes,
I told him I wanted bright shoesand I got him right. So then
I thought about mismatching them, andthen I'm like, oh, maybe I'll
just wear one pair in the firsthalf, one pair in the second half,

(18:07):
and just turns out that sometimes thesecond half is always better than the
first half. So so that wasintentional by you then to actually change shoes
because people talked about it. Wegot to the first media time out of
the second half, I'm getting tappedon my back, like Neil jes See
changed his shoes. I told you, like, the gold shoes are better.
Did you say something to him?So that was something you meant to
do then? Yeah, definitely, that was that was something I just just

(18:30):
a meet thing for sure. AllRight, is that acceptable to everybody out
Yeah? Okay, yeah, theydig it. All right, there we
go, So all right, wegot that handled. I do want to
get into you your game, yourfit with this basketball team. When you
hear coach can't be talk about that. You know this is a team right
now that that's playing for a Horizonleagu championship, and you know you transferred

(18:52):
here. We'll get into I wantto talk about your time in Pontiac too,
Pontiac High School and all of that. When you hear coach can't be
say that where you know, sometimesand I've seen it in games, I've
seen it in practice, he'll geton you if you pass up a shot,
definitely, definitely. How does howdoes that make you feel as a
guy that's coming in here. You'vegot it all figured out now, obviously,

(19:14):
but how does that make you feelwhen camp says that to you?
Honestly, it just gives me allthe confidence in the world to just keep
going and just believing myself as muchas he does, as much as everybody
on the team and the coaching staffdoes. To score the ball, and
that's what I'm good at. Sohe's been on me since day one about
that. So I've just been tryingto make sure I score as many as
I can, shoot the ball aswell as I can, and help the

(19:37):
team any way possible. The GreatCampy Show here live at our Ja's pub

with Mimic Insurance, the husband spouseis a teacher, so I certainly

(20:02):
can confirm that. Dq The wayyou rebound the basketball, that's the thing
that I'm always struck by. Yourebound the basketball with a hunger that you
don't see from the guard spot, certainly in the horizonally, I mean you
don't see a ton in college basketball. But from the guard spot, it's
nothing for you to get double digitrebounds in a game. Where does that

(20:23):
come from? Man, just beenback in Pontiac. It was like we
didn't have Like when I was,I was at parks and stuff like that.
I didn't know I wasn't always playingAU basketball. I was at the
park. I grew up in thisarea, Arbor Hills area. I'd have
been every gym around here. Soit was just like I'm always playing at

(20:44):
the Park. I really didn't havea lot of guys to play with,
so it was just more I hadto get my rebound on my own.
Or it's just only four or fiveof us, so we were not playing
a full game or just playing twentyone or whatever. Man twenty one and
you gotta get it on your own. There's no there's nobody out there to
rebound for you. Or we didn'thave a gun. The ball throws back
to it. It was just us. So we had to figure it out.

(21:07):
And I had to make sure thatI could rebound at a high level.
Even though I was always playing thebig man. I had to make
sure I can rebound with the biggerthe bigger guys and on higher levels around.
How do you do that? Justyou just gotta be a dog.
Just that's it got to be adog. That's Q. You cole on
life everybody right right there, there'ssome there's some life wisdom for you,

(21:29):
uh Q. I want to Iwant to tell everybody out there. Star.
I've talked about it on the broadcastbefore, but but you playing at
Pontiac High School and MI guy GordyLindsay got me onto this one, and
it's very interesting so I made ita point to kind of talk about it
during games. So playing at PontiacHigh School, you were originally a post
player, so you were a bigoriginally. I believe you guys went when
year you you were playing in thepost, I think you guys went three

(21:52):
and eighteen that year they moved youto the point guard. Yeah, you
guys go twenty three and three thenext year where you go to the regional
where you lost to Romeo Wems andthat New Haven School and all that over
there. Just that in and ofitself, the way you were able to
transform the fortunes of that team isthat where I don't see where you learn

(22:17):
to like score the basketball, butthe mentality of a score. It's different
to beat to be a post playerand score the ball. But when you're
a guard, you have the ball, so you're able to dictate. Definitely.
At Pontiac, I was. Iwould say I was always. I
had the most IQ on the team, so like I could get everybody where
they needed to be, and wecould. We always had good flow,
we always had good chemistry out there, and it just made me want to

(22:41):
be I wanted to win. Ididn't want to keep losing. We were
losing. I was I wasn't ingood shape myself. I was maybe all
close to two hundred, just fat. I wasn't. I wasn't working out
as well as I should have been. And then in the summer my senior
year, I got with Gordy andhe just pushed me. He just pushed
me to my limit. And thenby the time I started my senior season,

(23:03):
I was able to play point guardand we were able to make a
run and do good things. Sothat was just a decision you made.
You said, all right, Idon't I don't like this. I don't
like losing. What does it take? Definitely, and you paid the price,
definitely. Talking with Q cole hereon the Greg Campy Show, says
here too, in your bio, favorite snack is Swedish fish. Yeah,

(23:27):
you still on that. Definitely,That's my favorite favorite favorite snack for anywhere
road trips. I'm getting them.Whenever we get off the bus, I
get a chance, I'm getting Swedishfish. So, DQ, you transferred
from a henry Ford Community College. You made one hundred and fifteen to three
point shots last year. You wereyou were Jukole American last year as well,

(23:49):
was it pretty much a no brainerto come to Oakland in that?
I mean, you know, likeCampbell let the ferraris run, you know
in the street, if you know, if you had the ability to shoot
the basketball. Was that was thatkind of a no brainer? Or was
Oakland somewhere you always wanted to bedeep down? Oakland was somewhere I always
wanted to be. Like I said, I grew up right across the street

(24:10):
five points Church right Wyamca. Iwas always there, Real Rogers, Oaklan
Christian. I was always at allthose places just playing, just hooping.
And then I didn't really know whatit took to be a division on basketball
player. I just even out ofhigh school. I just thought like maybe
I can drop back duco basketball andthen see where it takes me. And
then once I figured out what itwas like and what it took, I

(24:33):
fell in love with the grind andthen it was just it was just it
just took off from there. Andthen when I got to Henry Ford,
I just worked every day every day, stay consistent with everything I was doing.
And then I told myself, likebefore I even ever got a conversation
out of Coach Campe, Coach COMMITIcoach cub I told myself that I was

(24:53):
gonna get an offer from Oakland andplaying basketball at Oakland, and it came
true. So it was definitely adream come true. So you're along those
lines like with Trey and everything, like you love being here period, definitely,
definitely. I love thinking about it. I love it. I love
it telling a diq you cole hereon the Greg Campi Show. So let's
fast forward. Then you transfer, you get here, You're here. We

(25:17):
step out there on the court atOhio State first game of the year,
you know, ten thousand people, how many people were there at the game?
Or Illinois it's a sold out crowd. They're going crazy. They're nationally
ranked. Did you ever look aroundand say, wow, man, like
I've made it, I'm here.Yeah, every team in the non conference
schedule, it was just it wasamazing to just be able to walk in

(25:37):
those arenas, in those facilities andsee that everything and all the hard work
that I've done is paid off.Just being able to be here and have
the opportunity to step on the flooragainst teams like that or with teams like
that and almost beat them and comeclose to beat them, and actually beat
them, so it was. Itwas definitely a dream come true from watching
it all ESPN tag being on ESPNS. It's funny. Man, Like I

(26:03):
look on I look on your facewhen you're telling that story. Man like
you you do you? You lovethis? You love this. That's awesome.

(26:23):
Be sure. There's not even agame here today. It's just Camp's
radio show. When he doesn't runout of gas, you know, like,
uh, but no when when youget out there in the arena though,
because the arena gets popping and andyou've been everywhere in the Horizon League,
there's no place like the arena.Oh yeah, I don't like it.
We're fans are great. Teas forthrees, I got everybody. Everything

(27:06):

to get everybody in that arena Tshirt before the night's over, don't you.
Definitely that's me and Jack Blake. That's our goal. They run out
of T shirts and you hear thatgives I can run out of T shirts
here, you gotta we gotta ordersome more of it. D Q.
You guys are in the chase rightnow, and obviously league championships and NCAA

(27:29):
tournaments are are the dream. Andthat's really every you know, every basketball
player in college is that's their dreamright now. What's it gonna take for
you guys to get there? Well, we gotta stay consistent with our game
playing. Our coaching staff is doinga great job of preparing us every game
every week, no matter how manydays we got in between. Would they
give us what we need every dayin practice, on and off the court

(30:25):
back to the Greg Campy Show. We're live at our J's Pub in Rochester
Hills. He is a coach,Greg Campy. My name is Neil Rule,
the voice of the Golden Grizzlies.Happy to have you along for the
ride, and of course the GregCampy Show is brought to you in part
by farmer Own Prairie Farm, celebratingeighty five years of feeding American families.
It is your last opportunity here getthose questions in to ask Campy. All

(30:47):
you got to do just send atweet with the hashtag ask Campy on there
and we will read them before weget to that. Yes, I heard
DQ and you guys talking about shootingall those threes Northern Kentucky. We shot
forty nine of them, so ifwe got to do that at home to
get rid of all the shirts.Hopefully we'll make more than fifteen. I
didn't can get hit no time.Yeah, there you go, absolutely,

(31:11):
so yeah, everybody, Well that'sDequ's goal. You know, he wants
everybody in the Oakland University Credit UnionArena to have a tea shirt when they
leave. Well, next time weshoot forty nine, let's try and make
twenty twenty two of them, twentyfive of them maybe? Yeah, well
our all time record. Did anybodyknow what it is? Nobody here probably
knows that. Who said that? You're exactly right. We made twenty seven

(31:33):
out of fifty six against Madonna Universityof the Date University. Yeah, she
didn't play in the game, andthat was when we scored one hundred and
eighty nine points that night. Sopeople, the people in the back new
one hundred and eighty nine points exactly. Maybe my worst moment ever as a
coach, though, why is that? I hate to say this publicly,

(31:56):
but it's been fifteen twenty years. It's been more than that thirty years,
so I can say it so long? Almost is it? Almost is?
We go and we're playing Madonna andwe played Toledo. We're Division two at
the time. We played Toledo andwe go to Toledo and beat Toledo by
twenty some points as a Division twoteam, and our two best players,

(32:17):
Toy McGregor and Tom Eller, getkind of hurt in the game, and
we're going to play Madonna, whowe knew we should probably beat. If
we're going to beat a Division oneteam, we surely should beat Madonna,
right, especially when she wasn't playingright. Absolutely, So, if we
go into the game and they hada coach who's a friend of miney In
fact, before he got that job, he was a radio guy for us.

(32:38):
His name was Sharf, and he'sthat was in the day of Loyola
Marrimont when he played that style ofplay that I remember. They beat Michigan
in the n State Tournament. Theolder people remember that. So we go
there and I don't play those twoguys, and uh, we're we're you

(33:02):
know, back in those days,we scored a lot of points. We
would average it, you know, ninety three ninety points a game. And
we go there and we're we're beatingthem badly, and they're pressing us,
and on offense they're shooting it offone pass. I mean, there had
to be a million possessions in thegame, and we're sitting there and Eric
Stephen's my assistant, looks at meat with about six seven mesks going first

(33:27):
half, he goes, we're goingto get eighty points as half, and
I looked at him and no,we're not. We're going to get ninety
And we ended up getting ninety three. And so now the game keeps going
and now we're ahead, uh huhuh one eighty nine. I think they
had ended up with one oh sevenand at that point nobody in the history

(33:47):
of college basketball had scored one hundredpoints and a half and we had ninety
eight with Yeah, we had ninetyeight with fifteen seconds twelve seconds to go,
and they're bringing it up and Iyelled at one of my kids foul,

(34:12):
and we fouled. So we gotthe ball back with a chance to
score one hundred points, up eightyone points, not my finest moment as
a coach, and God, thebasketball God, stepped in and we missed
the shot. We were twenty sevenof fifty six from the three in that
game and we missed a shot thatwould have given us one hundred points.

(34:32):
We had been the first team inhistory. Now since then, teams have
done it, But at that pointin time, nobody had ever done that,
and that's I learned a great lessonthat night. You know, you
don't mess with the basketball gods. All right? Well, hey, it
is time for hashtag Ask Campy fireoff a question on Twitter Pittsburgh. Marty's
gonna lead things off sas a coacha little off the usual path. This

(34:54):
week, I was looking at oldOakland University men's basketball schedules, some real
gems and such as scoring one hundredand eighty nine points in a game.
It's right there, I swear toGod. Such as scoring one hundred and
eighty nine points in a game andthat game and thirty points in another other

(35:14):
than the Michigan win. Which wouldyou consider the biggest win in your early
days as a D one program?Well, Marty asked me that question when
I saw him last time. Whathe thought our biggest win? I said,
well, I'm not sure, mybut beating Michigan UH in the arena,
not just beating Michigan, but doingit in the arena. Of course,
they'll never come back and never willnow, but you know that that,

(35:38):
to me was for Oakland University, not for me personally, but for
our university at that time of wherewe were to beat, you know,
the Kyle Bella Universities of this statewas just you know, an unbelievable night
and moment. But if you takethat game out of it, there's been

(35:58):
a lot of great wins in thatBut honestly, the most important win that
I think this university ever had waswhen Pierre Dukes made the shot against or
Roberts to send us to our firstNCAA tournament. We were a big underdog
in the game. We had nothad a good season. We had only

(36:20):
had eight wins. I think theleast amount of wins in my forty years
is twelve or something like that. But we only had eight wins at that
point, and we went to theconference tournament and we swept it and beat
a great team. Pierre made ashot. And the reason I say that
is because we had no idea whatwas coming when we made that shot.
To go got to the hotel backin Tulsa. Got to the hotel,

(36:45):
I was up till five in themorning, every ten minutes doing a radio
show somewhere in the world, notjust in the country, in the world.
I was doing people I couldn't undersstandwhat they were saying to me,
and then an interpreter would tell mewhat what they said. And then the
coolest part about that is we flewback and there's a tremendous story. I

(37:07):
know, I don't have enough time, but we flew to Tulsa and they
lost our luggage. So we getoff the plane. We're going to play
in a conference tournament. We don'thave our luggage. We don't have shoes,
we don't have our uniforms, wedon't have anything, and we got
twenty four hours before we play.I sent whoever dobo was at that time.

(37:29):
I think it was Sarah Judd, but I don't remember exactly. No,
No, she wasn't here fifteen years. Whoever our dobo was at that
time, we sent to a footlocker and bought shoes for everybody, which
in that day killed our budget, you know. And then we were going
to wear Oral Roberts's wrote uniforms inour first game. We weren't playing them.

(37:52):
And the luggage they found the luggagelike four hours before the game,
so we at least got our uniformsback. So we get on the plane,
we fly home, and we're inthe and this is before obviously nine
to eleven, and back in theold days in the airport, you could
walk your you know, if youtake your son to the you could walk

(38:14):
to the terminal with him and thenwatch him get on the plane and then
walk back to the car. Right, So we get to come out of
the n terminal and it's like, you know, a law and Order TV
show where there's this this group ofpeople that are behind, you know,
they're roped off and they're behind andthere's TV cameras and everything. And I

(38:35):
remember saying to my assistants Smitty atthe time, I go, Jesus,
what happened? They were all herefor us. We walked out there,
They're yelling questions and they want andwe were like in shock. I mean,
this is we did this work. And so that moment where I think
the world found out that Oakland Universityis not in California, that it's in

(38:58):
Michigan, and that they have thisreally good basketball team. I think that
was the most important win that we'vehad during my time here. Yeah,
so there's a thorough answer to yourquestion there, Mark long one. Yeah,
a long one, no doubt aboutit. Griffin Beers wants to know
you're gonna I think you'll go politicalon this, but let's see you'll be
politically correct on this one. Hashtagask campy if there were a draft a

(39:19):
Division one Oakland players, who wouldyou pick first overall of all the players
they ever had. I don't haveto be political. They can get mad
at men. Take Keith Benson. You don't get six eleven. You know
NBA draft picks. Now, Iwould not sit here and say if who's
the best player that ever played atOakland? I would not say that who's
the most dominant player. We've hada lot of dominant players. But if

(39:42):
I was going to start a team, you're going to start at six eleven,
right, NBA guy? Yeah?Yeah? Then a draft and then
you've got Kendrid Nunn. You've gotk Felder, you can go back to
Mike Helms. You know you've gotLet mean, just look at the wall.
There aren't many schools that are consideredmid May like we are, that
have five NBA players hanging on awall in your buildings. So our fan

(40:05):
base has been very fortunate, andI've been very fortunate of a coach to
be able to coach such great, great players and becaus I said earlier this
year and the show. When TreyTownsend gets named First Team All the League
this year, it'll be eighteen consecutiveyears that we've had a First Team All
the League player, and it's thesecond longest streak in the history of college
basketball. The only school that hasa longer streak is Gonzaga. That's a

(40:29):
pressive company, no doubt about that. Rob Brooks, who's in the house
here tonight, camp, it's beena while since we had a food segment.
How were the Doctor Pepper baked beansfor those paint the picture? Rob
here brought a can of Doctor Pepperbaked beans. That's a real thing,
come to find out. Yes,and Rob, I haven't opened it yet.
It's city and I'm the counter inmy condo, but I have not

(40:51):
to be honestly, I don't thinkI've eaten the meal at home since then,
you know, because we kind ofbusy this time of the year.
We're on the road, and whenwe're not playing around the road, playing
to go to high school games andthings like that. So I guess I
didn't think about it during the SuperBowl. Yeah, yesterday made some nachos,
but I should have used them.I didn't even think about it there,

(41:13):
but I will try them, andI will let people know what's going
to be the play. You're gonnatake it straight up. You're gonna mix
it in with something I got toeat straight up. Maybe some tortilla chips
or something like that. Okay, some kind of delivery mechanisms. Al Right,
I got it. You know, scoop it. Scoop it, ye,
scoop it. Get the scoops out, Nick Lucido. Hashtag ask campy
coach. Good to see you inthe house today. Any thoughts on maybe

(41:35):
switching over to an EV like ColinShannon? I hear Chevy's got a good
EV lineup? Hashtag ask campy hashtagthis is not an AD. That's a
really good question. But the problemwith that is is you have to plug
it in, right. Yeah,I'll instead of running out of gas one
time, I'll be out of electricitya hundred times because you know how many

(41:57):
times I've left my phone in mycar and can't find my phone and I
have to walk all the way andget it out of the car. Or
you know, I just my mindthinks in different ways, so I would
know for sure, I wouldn't plugthe car, and then we got a
parking spot, right, you canput a charging unit there. Yeah,
it's not going to happen. Okay, we're just trying to give you options.
Camp I hope I'm still alive, and what is it, twenty thirty

(42:20):
two or whatever, we all haveto have them if that can. I
don't want to get political, butif that happens, I'll have to learn.
I've put a thing in my phonethat says charge car right. Geomo
Sherry checks in with us hashtag askcampy And I do like this question,
coach. How does it feel toget the RJS when the sun is still
up? That's how we know we'regetting towards march Man. Yeah, that's

(42:42):
a good point. It's kind ofcool, right, And they were down
at the right State. Yeah,X crew, I know that they were
extremely happy that our administration at OaklandUniversity has thought enough of them to give
them a chance to go on theroad. And it's great teaching and learning
experience for our kids in our journalismschool. To be able to go on
the road like that and broadcast thegame is really really cool. And it

(43:06):
was neat having them there and theywere doing, you know, videos outside
the locker room, and they gotto experience a pretty good win. So
you know, I was that wasa great learning experience and educational moment for
us. Yeah, no doubt thatI learned a lot when I was able
to do that as a student,go to the conference tournament and all that
kind of stuff. Yeah, itcertainly does help you out a lot,
Matt. I was just gonna say, I like them a lot better than

(43:29):
I liked you at that time,I know, and probably still now too.
Somebody today where I was going,Hey, after I met, After
I was with this guy and wewere talking, he goes. Then I
went and I ran into a guynamed Neil Rule. He's like the head
of our homeowners association. He goes, I didn't know he was your friend.
I said, he's not my friend. He works at Oakley, Right,
we're co workers, Right, we'renot cole friends. Exactly what I

(43:50):
said. Yeah, so he livesover by me. Then in your own
are you the head of a homeownersassociation? No, I'm the second or
whatever. Oh well, he wasgiving you a lot more credit than Yeah
that, Hey, Camp, I'velearned from you. Man, have everybody
around you be high level and thentake the credit. Right, exactly right.

(44:10):
I've spent forty years doing that,and I don't know exactly what you're
talking about it just because we're notfriends. I mean, I don't learn
from that. Camp Matt from theHorizon round Table says, I asked Camp
he felt like we haven't had alot of food talk lately. Man,
I guess I guess we have peopleseen me lately. Well that he goes
on to that, I know you'regetting healthy and congratulations, but what food
stops do you still look forward to? And why haven't you scheduled a home

(44:32):
and home with Western Illinois so wecan get back to Sunrise Chicken. Oh
wow, Yeah, that's the olddays there, That is the old days.
There's this place. I mean,if I don't know if any of
you have ever been to McComb,Illinois. No you haven't. I'll just
answer for everybody. It's not theend of the world, but you can
see it from there, right,I mean, it's it is. And

(44:53):
they had this little place called SunriseChicken and they make the best chicken that
you'll ever eat. It was unbelievable. I used to make sure that we'd
spend the night there, which playersdidn't like that, but we'd spend the
night there just so we could eatat that place. But I had Naggy
said to me, you know,we haven't seen them all year. Right,
the first time we played him withsix games to go, and I

(45:15):
shook his hand before the game. We're talking and he just looks me,
goes, how much weight have youlost? All right? Are you sick?
So that's why we're not talking aboutfood, Matt. We're trying to
trying to change the lifestyle. Oh, absolutely, Andrew. This is a
good one. And this is thelast one here, which is a pretty
good win to ride off on hashtag. Ask Campy pretty sure? I saw

(45:37):
a stat where Campy currently doesn't haveany technical fouls this year. This can't
be right, Kennet have I Idon't think I have had one this year.
I saw yesterday on Twitter that thecoach at Jacksonville has twenty one this
year. I don't think I'd havemy job if I had twenty one.

(46:04):
That's yeah, that's probably true.Have you ever do you remember getting through
a season without a technical? Idon't think I've had many in the last
three or four years. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, you have kind
of changed that up well, youknow, to the point that I know
the referee so well, and Iknow who's going to be terrible and who
isn't, so they're terrible, butterrible, I guess. I you know
that's I hadn't thought about that.Oh man, that's pretty good. But

(46:28):
yeah, that is today's edition ofhashtag as Campy on Twitter. That is
a very very fun segment. Allright, we'll take our final break.
When we come back, we'll lookahead to the week coming up, and
certainly as well what he got camphere's just talking about that. The you
people that were at the game, the travel they called on Trey Townson,

(46:49):
Uh, yeah, right in frontof our bench, right, and the
guy that and this is what I'mtalking about, the guy that made the
call. I've had him one hundredtimes, you know. I mean,
I remember he remembers when I wasfat, and I remember when he didn't
have gray hair, right, andso I wasn't too happy about that call.

(47:10):
And then later in the game,he's standing in front of me and
I said to him, I said, Brian, that has to be the
worst call you've ever made. Now, seven ten, fifteen, years ago,
they would have tied me for that. Right. He looks at me
and goes, and I've made alot of bad ones, haven't I.

(47:30):
What do you say to that? You know why? I just yeah,
you're probably right. There's nowhere togo. Oh yeah, he had me
man like it. All right. We'll take our final break, we'll come
back, we'll talk about the upcomingweek game on the road. Certainly,
we'll be back at the OU CreditUnion Arena as well. We'll be back

Jay's Pub and Rochester Hills. Heis a coach Greg Camp. He my
name is Neil rul of Boye.So the Golden Grizzly is happy to have

(50:05):
you all with us. These thesecrowds here Camp continue to be unbelievable,
standing room, et cetera. Appreciateall your guys' support for real. Thank
you guys. Yeah. The problemwith that for me is that we learn
that I've missed two shows and theystill show up. So it's not me,
they're coming for Neil. I surehope it's not you. Yeah,
I think it's the player segment.Yeah, I think I think that's what

(50:25):
it is. And the season friestoo. Yeah, that's sure, the
season fries because they're awesome up hereat r J's Pub. Make sure you
get up here at some point.Camp. We have a we have a
developing situation that just brought to myattention. We were talking about refs and
technicals and stuff like that. Soit's just been brought to my attention from
Colin Shannon. On Wednesday the gameat Perdue Fort Wayne, we have a

(50:47):
referee that we've never had in agame before. I guess his name is
Kenneth Morland. He was on TheBachelor and Bachelor in Paradise. I didn't
make that up. That's real.I don't know what that is though.
What is what is Bachelor in Paradise? I don't know either. Some I'm
sure somebody here knows. I thinkit's one of those reality shows where they

(51:09):
like, you try to get awaysomething right, like they oh, you
see the guy with the rose andthe commercials, that's the Bachelor, all
right. I don't think that's somethingthat I would watch her. If somebody
watches that's out, that's fine.I guess it's not something that I've so
camp that. Why are we bringingthat up? Because I might get the

(51:29):
technical now, yeah, and I'mgood one for sure now because you know,
when he makes a bad call,I'm gonna bring up the rose thing.
We're gonna have. We're gonna havethe sidelines extra miked up on Wednesday.
All right the radio broadcast. Okay, we're not gonna miss that.
All right, camp this week oneof those I don't want to call it

(51:50):
a quirk in the Horizon League schedule. It's been by design, third game
of a three game road swing inthe schedule at Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday.
Certainly we've talked about a lot hereon the show. We know what
they did here in the OU CreditUnion Arena, and a very very dangerous
team, certainly against his own.Yeah, I mean, they're they're the

(52:10):
antithesis is that you got it right, yeah about me of what the zone
is, and we've got a guardto three. We're not gonna change.
We're not gonna go, oh,let's play man demand because we wouldn't be
able to do it. But they'rea team that when they've got it going,
they're gonna hurt us. You know, Dayton's the same way. Everybody's
all upset with me after the Daytongame. But I don't know if you

(52:34):
guys have paid any attention, butDayton, it's like twenty and three in
rank fifteenth in the country. Imean, we got beat by a really
good team that night. That shot, shot it and fort Wayne. It's
funny after that game, all thecoaches in the league were calling me and
are they really that good? Andthey're ceiling Is that good? Because when
they're making it, and they gotguys that can make it, they also
have a couple of guys that canget to the rim. I said bit

(52:57):
over a course of of you know, thirty one games, you've got to
have nights where you score at therim and with post play and protect the
rim. And they've struggled with thatand that's why they had that five game
losing streak. You know. Buthe's built that team to win the conference
tournament. He didn't build that teamto win the regular season. He built
that team to win the conference tournament. They're a very dangerous team that can

(53:20):
for sure win the conference tournament. In fact, I think they're a favorite,
you know, especially if they canget a home home first game.
And so it's going to be areally difficult game for us. It's one
that scares me because of what youjust said about his own And I still
say that night they played us hereDecember second, I was wrong, by
the way, it was the second, not the first. Okay, that's

(53:44):
as good a basketball game that's everbeen played against Oakland in the arena,
and we've just got to do abetter job of scoring. We have to
control, we have to do exactlythe same game plan that we had against
Wright State. Against them, We'vegot to score at the rim. We've
got to play slow, we've gotto slow them down, and we've got
to make their shots with pressure andnot let them get in a flow.

(54:07):
And if we do that, we'llhave a chance to win. And it's
a huge game for those that sawand a lot of people talked about it.
Why were they so effective with thatcorner three and their match up here
at the Oh You Credit Union Arena. Well, I will say this,
and this sounds like an excuse, and if they're listening, it'll make them
mad. But it was our thirdgame in five days and to play that

(54:31):
zone you have to play it withgreat energy. And we had beaten Xavier
on a Monday night, and thenwe had our rivalry game against Detroit on
Wednesday, and then we played themon Saturday, and we didn't have a
whole lot of hop in our stepthat day. And wants to what do
you say that something gets out ofthe gate, the horses got out of
the barn. Yeah, once thathappened, you can't get them back in.

(54:53):
And it did, and again theyplayed unbelievable and they're a really good
team. But I think we hadsomething to do with it too. And
now we're coming into a situation thatit's at their building. We've historically played
pretty well in in in that bigbuilding in Fort Wayne. And and you

(55:14):
know, back in the day, back when we were in the Summit League
and they were in the Summit League, we used to take five bus loads
of students to because we played doubleheaders of women and the men's So we
would take five bus loads of studentsto those games and we would have more
fans there than they did, andwe always played pretty well there. So
we have a history of playing wellthere. We need to play well there.

(55:35):
And you know, it's a reallyimportant game, No Camp. You
brought up that point too. Withthe zone, the corners of the zone,
that's a want to. That's likerebounding, right, Like that's a
want to proposition, Like you youhave to go at that, you have
to attack that if if you're tiredor or whatever, it can't it can't
happen. It's a want two propositionto get out there right in our zone.

(55:59):
If if you run good offense, that's the weakness of it, that's
the area that's it's you know,we're trying to guard that with Chris Conway
or Brew or the big If it'sa two pass if it's if it's one
pass there, no, But ifit's a couple passes and it's there,
the center's got to get there. And that's if you screen and do things,
you can get that shot. Youknow, we believe though that if

(56:21):
that's the only shot you're getting,then we're gonna beat you. But it's
tough. We're gonna have to getto it because they can make it.
Oh absolutely. And then on Saturday, we'd love to see everybody out at
the Oakland University Credit Union Arena onSaturday three o'clock. I U p U
Y will be in town. That'llbe televised locally on TV twenty also.
But can't buy you PUY coming inand look, you know that they had

(56:44):
some moments or they had success againstus when we were down there. Ultimately
we had the control and we gotthe win. And that's something where you
have to take car business. Theybeat Fort Wayne at Fort Wayne, Yes
they did. And you can saythey beat Fort Wayne and Fort Wayne had
us by thirty. You know.So it college basketball. You never know.
On a given day, it's reallygoing to be interesting. Wednesday,

(57:05):
they play at Detroit. You know, so it's just gonna be interesting because
what happens in that game this isthat you know, Detroit's looking for that
elusive victory and the odds makers willhave Detroit probably the only game this year
as the favorite, and we'll see, you know, how that game goes
and how they come off that andif they were able to beat Detroit,

(57:25):
they'll come in on a winning streak. And you know, you never know
in this game, and I'm kindof hoping Detroit wins that game. Yeah,
you've you've talked about that a coupleof times. Somebody asked that question.
Would you would you rather have Detroitget a win before we get to
that game in the final game ofthe year. I'd like to Detroit.
I'd like Detroit to win every gamethey play up to our game. That

(57:46):
will help us in the standings. And it also get that you know,
that thing off their back where uh, you know, they haven't won,
So I'm I'm the biggest Detroit fanout there there is right now, outs
camp anything in the world. Collegebasketball got about two minutes or so left
here. No, I just hopethat our students will show up Saturday.

(58:07):
You know, this team's a funteam to watch. Man, They're really
a fun team to watch, anunbelievable group of kids to coach. It's
I can't tell you how much funI'm having coaching them. The respect that
they have, the love for ouruniversity. I mean they well you heard
DQ today. They truly love OaklandUniversity. They truly represent this university it's

(58:30):
supposed to be represented, and maybethat's why we're winning. To you know,
they're very talented, but they're greatkids, and that to be able
to come back from what they didThursday and do what they did on Saturdays,
it's it's such such a big thingfor us. And you know,
like I told them after the game, but two years ago, you know,
we were humming along, thought wewere going to win the league and

(58:52):
go to the NCATE Tournament, andone of the greatest players ever played at
Oakland missed a dunk that would havewon a game. With you know ten
seconds to go, and the otherteam went down and scored and beat us,
and we all we had to do. We still had three home games
left. All we had to dowas win two of them, and we
still would have won the league. And one loss became two to two became
three and everything went bad. Andwe had that same chance to happen the

(59:15):
other night and it didn't. Andthat's what I feel the best about.
All right, Well, they'll wrapthings up here on the Greg Campy Show.
Just three regular season home games left, by the way, so make
sure you make your way out there. Big thank you to Diek you Cole
for coming through. A big thankyou to everybody here at RJ's Pub and
all of you as well, foranother episode of The Greg Campy Show live
