Tournament. Shine, It's on onthe line, Shine, move the foods.

(00:56):
What is going on? Everybody?Welcome back to a special nca A
Tournament edition of the Greg Campy Show. He is a coach, Greg Campy.
My name is Neil Real. Happyto have you with us. We're
live at our J's Pub in RochesterHills and camp the job is done.

(01:17):
The Golden Grizzlies are in the NCAATournament. The Kentucky Wildcats next up Thursday
seven, ten pm on CBS National. How you doing, camp I'm good.
I obviously we did something good becauseall year I come into this show,
and the first thing they do ishand me a bill. Today they
hand me free fries. So hey, we must have done something really well.

(01:37):
Things change quickly, don't they.Yeah, winning's good, No,
absolutely, but yeah, and certainlywe'll get into to the Kentucky Wildcats matchup
coming up in just a little bitin the show. And by the way,
if you want to get involved, send a tweet hashtag ask Campy.
We'll answer all the questions that wehave time to get to. A lot
of them are flying in here tonight, so we will certainly get to those
Golden Grizzlies. Director of Athletic SteveWaterfield will join us coming up in just

(02:01):
a little bit. We'll talk aboutthe process of the NCAA tournament, what's
been going on and all that stuff. But camp before we get into all
that, let's go back to Tuesdaynight in Indianapolis. Describe it from your
chair. Well, I think thatyou know, what was most evident in
this tournament was the last three minutesin both games on Monday night and then

(02:22):
back again on Tuesday night. Ithought we dominated the last three minutes,
you know, and to win achampionship, that's what you have to do.
You have to be the best thatyou you know, the best team
in the final most important plays.Players make plays, and when you get
into that time, it's not aboutcoaching, it's not about adjustments, it's
not about anything. It's about yourgood players having a confidence in themselves,

(02:46):
having a confidence in their teammates togo out there and make plays with all
the pressure in the world and everythingon the line, National TV on ESPN,
and Trey Townson showed the world youknow what he is, and then
the other that is you know, lamp and Goalkey both were unbelievable. DQ
had a tremendous tournament, but itwas it wasn't just you know, one

(03:07):
guy. You know, he putthe Batman cape on that night and he
he did some things, but itwas the whole you know, the whole
year has been about how good ofa team we have. I don't pay
that much attention to a lot ofthese things during the course of a season,
but I've had no numerous national mediamedia people talk to me about our

(03:27):
team in the last few days andthey all state, well, you guys,
you don't do anything good. Yourstats don't show you know, like
you're not the best in this you'renot the best, You're just kind of
in the middle of everything. Andyou know, I again, I don't
pay attention to that stuff, butit shows you that, you know,
we've got ten eleven really good players. They play for each other and they
make plays when it counts that we'vethere's very few close games we've lost this

(03:52):
year. If it was close,we want them. And that's how you
have a special season camp when youlook at it too, like this team
coming down the stretch of games gamesand you made mention of it, every
single close game always seemed to wentyour way all season long. Was that
something that as the season went on? Did that give you a lot of
confidence in March? Because I knowthe team had the confidence. When you

(04:13):
talk to Jack and Blake and Trayand all those guys, nothing ever deterred
them when coming down the stretch ofthese games. They never displayed it,
fear nerves, any of that stuff. It was very business like. Yeah,
when we've gotten beat this year, the only game that I would go
back to is the Northern Kentucky game. At Northern Kentucky, we made a
couple of really bad plays down thestretch, and you know, but again

(04:34):
that might have been what also helpedus to learn from that. But every
other game that we lost, youknow, it was basically the other team
played great. I mean, everybodyremembers that Fort Wayne game here, everybody
remembers of the Right State game here, and how you know that was unbelievable
basketball. Those teams played against us, and what they're so good at when
I say they, I mean ourplayers is one mistake never became two.

(04:59):
Two never became three. And I'vesaid that a lot this year because it's
true. The snowball effect never happened. And you know, you can watch
any great team in this tournament andthere's always going to be a bad day
and when then they come back fromit, or they're going to make a
bad play and they come back fromit. They don't let bad plays affect
the next play. And that's whatwe did. We always believe we were

(05:20):
going to win. And when youwin that many close games, you know,
it's more the mental side of itthan you know, the smart take
from the strong. We talk aboutthat all the time. The smart take
from the strong. We're going toneed that on Thursday and and if with
that type of belief and believing ineach other and believing more importantly, believing
in themselves knowing. I mean, how many games did we win because we

(05:40):
made free throws? You know?I mean just you and you watch,
just watch, you know, wetalk, we talk all the time about,
you know, some of the badthings that have happened to us in
the tournament over the last decade. And you just see that, you know,
that brain freeze that you know, you just look around at tournament games.
It was easy for us this yearbecause we won and we're looking at
everybody, but the amount of justunbelievably, I can't believe that just happened

(06:06):
in the tournament. We saw thatall day Saturday, We saw it all
day Friday. We saw a guythink he's behind in foul. You know
that they're up one point with fourseconds to go, and he thinks he's
behind any fouls. You know,I mean, just the crazy things that
happened in this tournament and they didn'thappen to us because of the mental toughness
of our players. Camp two, when you look at the tournament run,

(06:28):
because I've talked about this before,if you show me a tournament champion,
I'll show you a moment. Therewere many moments of doubt. Things were
in doubt a lot, and withthis team camp, especially in that last
five minute stretch. I mean,I guess the game against Cleveland State at
the start, but you know, you can start like that and you can
still recover. You can't finish likethat and recover and coming down the stretch.

(06:49):
Camp. I mean, for themost part, these games were closed
out. Yeah, and they wereclosed out the proper way. You know
they did. We make a mistake, sure, you know, but everybody's
going to make a mistake. Butwhen we made one, we we shrugged
it off. Okay, I'm notgonna do that again, you know,
and we made free throws, andyou know, thinks we can look at

(07:09):
things that went against us. Imean, we're up seventy three seventy with
a minute five or something to goin the game in the championship game,
and their great player shoots a threefrom the corner that hits the I mean,
it hits the back of the rim, goes up in the air,
hits the backboard, and still goesin. And you could sit there and
say, oh no, it's goingto happen again, or you know,
our guys went down, got theball to Tray and he got an and

(07:30):
one and we're up three. Andnow you know, we get a stop
in that we're up five. Thebiggest to me, the biggest play in
the game. And again I lookat it probably a little different than most
people. Sure you know, wemade shots. Sure you know, Goki
hits some great threes. Lampman, you know, did what he did DQ
you know, and you can lookat everybody that played and say, boy,

(07:54):
that he did it. You know, this play Chris Conway with a
couple of putbacks when they doubled Trayor when after the block, and Chris
was where he was supposed to be. He wasn't watching Trey saying Okay,
I know Trey's going to score, and just watch he you know, he
got to the front of the rimand and put Trey's misses back in twice
in the last five minutes of thegame. And so everybody did what they
were supposed to do. But thebiggest play of that game that nobody's even

(08:18):
talking about is we had a twopoint lead. I think actually we didn't
get the end one when he madethe three to tie it, we went
down to trade scored, we wentup two, and they came down with
about forty five seconds to go,and again their great player threw a ball
and Trey, you know, wasin the passing lane, opened didn't ball
watch, and intercepted the pass, and that defensive play won the game for

(08:41):
us, because now we're up towith the ball with you know, thirty
five or whatever seconds, we getfiled and make our free throws, and
so often this year we won thoseclose games at the defensive end. But
because of the free throw shooting,or because you know, you think of
Milwaukee with Goki, or you thinkof Lampman when he made some huge plays
down this strategu You think of thoseplays. But it's what we did at
the defensive end, getting the stopsand not only just getting the stops,

(09:05):
getting the rebounds. And that's ahuge difference from this team this year to
last year, is that when wehave to stops, we could also get
the rebounds. And that's the differencebetween. You know, it's so hard
to win a regular season championship atthe mid major level and come back and
win the league tournament. And ifyou don't believe me, just go look
at over fifty percent of the thirtyone conferences. Over fifty percent of the

(09:31):
regular season champions were beating their conferencetournament. Think about that, the regular
season champion, I think it waseighteen or nineteen? Up, was it
twenty twenty twenty one of the thirtyone. We got a huge research group
here tonight. Yeah, I'm gladbecause I didn't want to spend I didn't
want to spend time looking that upbefore the show because I'm spending all my
time being a ticket manager sending Tshirts to pe I don't know what they

(09:54):
think. You know, we gottahave a T shirt. We gotta wear
that in our barber watch the game. And so you want me to leave
the team right now? Go up, find you what size do you wear?
And so that's what my last fewdays have all been about. You
know, how many tickets can Iget you? How many shirts can you
want? Do you get? Canyou help me get an airline flight?

(10:18):
You know things like that. AndI told both two of my three sons
are going to fly in for thegame. And I told them, just
I'll venmo you what it coused, but you do all the work. Okay,
I'm not gonna get your flights. No, it is Media interviews and
all that kind of stuff. We'lltalk about all that too as the show
rolls on. Remember the Greg Campyshows brought to you by Henry Ford Sports
Medicine, the official team physicians forOakland University and you for more info,

(10:41):
visit Henry Ford dot com. BackslashAthlete. But yeah, camp, I
mean, it has been just justan incredible, incredible ride, and the
ride's not done yet. Obviously onThursday night the Golden Grizzlies and the Kentucky
Wildcats. But I also as wewrap up that discussion about about what happened
the other night in Indianapolis, andyou brought up Trey and I just I

(11:03):
saw this stat on Twitter and itcaught nationwide traction and it camp It really
blew me away because from my timewith the program, been a part of
the last three NCAA Tournament berths inDivision one. In conference tournament championship games.
Over the last twenty five years,in Division one players that have scored

(11:24):
thirty five plus points, ten plusrebounds, and played all forty minutes or
more in the conference tournament championship game, there are two players in the last
twenty five years that have done that. One is Kevin Durant. The other
is Trey Townsend. That's the list. We've had NBA guys come through this
program. We've had some of thegreatest players in mid major college basketball come

(11:46):
through this program. That effort byTrey Townsend when it was all on the
line, when all the chips werein the middle of the table, is
one of the greatest performances I've seen. Yeah, I mean, obviously those
numbers don't lie. I will saythis, I got a text last night
about that because I tweeted that outand I got a text last night about

(12:09):
that, and there actually is anotherperson that did it, and that person
played at Oakland. It was afemale, Sarah Judd. Sarah Judd did
that. Yeah, she just wantedto know why why we haven't talked about
that when you said it popped inmy head. Yeah, she I think
she had I don't remember thirty eightpoints and I said, well, that

(12:31):
wasn't in the last twenty five years, and she got upset about that.
So yeah, okay, that's fair. So there you go. But no,
I mean, Trey camp I don'tknow what to say. So I
said this to the media. I'llsay it to everybody here tonight, and
because it's you know, so manypeople. One of the things I think
Oakland's our media staff has done andgives and his people have done this year

(12:56):
is we've tried to, you know, in this day and age of free
internet and whatever, social media isthe word I'm looking for, everybody wants
to know what's going on, right, So we've kind of opened up,
showed you speeches to the team andlistening to what players say and trying to
give you a deeper dive and lookinto our program. One of the things

(13:16):
that happened in that game, andit's this is just amazing to me because
in my forty years I've I've heardsimilar things, but nothing as direct as
this. You know, we werestanding on the court something. You know
how the officials always have to goto the scorers table and there's you know,
it's those delays, which are goodbecause you get the rest. But

(13:39):
something was going on and we werewith five minutes going the game and I
think we were either down one orup one at the time, and GOALKI
kind of you know, I puthis hands on me, and I'm like,
you know, if I did thatto you, I'd get fired,
right, You know, but soand he said, he said, and
with unbelievable determination, and that thisis trey Te's time. Get him the

(14:05):
ball, like he's telling me callplays for him, not me. And
uh, and then lamp jumped inand just was so loud, Yes,
it's his time. The ball's gotto go to him. The ball has
to go to him. And forour players to recognize that and know what
he was doing in that given night, Yeah, it was one of the
most unbelievable, greatest performances I've everseen. And uh, and our Oakland

(14:28):
fans, you know, they gotto witness it and and because of that,
we got to cut down nets andstand under the caffette confetti and all
that kind of stuff. So,yeah, it was an unbelievable evening.
You were you were emotional at timesup there on the stage, and ESPN
caught you a couple of times likethat, what about you, Camp,
what about you? What was goingthrough your mind? That ruined my image?
So I didn't like that. Butyou know, when you when when

(14:56):
you've coached the players I've coached, and you fans have got this. I
mean, you go through the listin the last decade of you know,
Kendrick Nunn, Jalen Hayes, KayFelder, Searan Dorsey, Walker, Martez
Walker, Jalen Moore, who JamalKaine. You know, all these great

(15:22):
players that played here that didn't getto the tournament, that didn't get to
experience what our guys got to experience. And just this week, you know,
the you know, everywhere they go, they're being told how great they
are and everything, and they are, so they deserve that. But I
just the emotion of knowing that thisgroup got there, and you know,
I kind of blame myself at timesthat those kids didn't get there, and

(15:43):
so, you know, just tosee that, I think emotionally, you
know, Plus, I'm a littleolder than I used to be, and
I think I valued that night muchmore than I valued you know, we
went three times in six years. It was like, well, we're doing
this every year, you know, and but after you go through the upsets
that we went through, and youknow, I think you just value it

(16:07):
more. And I really enjoyed standingback and watching and you know, they
they made me cut the nets down, which I had said I would never
do again. I mean, there'sa story to that. But when when
Trey and Blake came over and toldme that they needed me to do it.
I did it, so uh,you know, it was it was
emotional, it was it was anunbelievable feeling. I know. The Ask

(16:33):
Campy portion of the show is comingup in just a little bit, but
right here before we cut the break, we just had a tweet came in
that came in from Gary mccarett thatsaid, coach I don't have a question
for you, but a statement,Coach Campy, we appreciate you. Your
love for everything Oakland basketball and OaklandUniversity was see in Pittsburgh. We're all
behind you the team. There yougo. That's well said, that's absolutely

(16:53):
well said. All right, we'regonna take our first break. We'll talk
to our guest, the director ofathletic Steve Waterfield, coming up in just
a couple of minutes. We've gotquestions for Steve coming in on Twitter as
well. Everybody's gonna get some questionshere tonight, but we'll be back with

to make sure that I'm reading thecommercials and every did a good job.
Thank you. Absolutely, he's thebills. Absolutely, You've got to keep
me in check here. But Steve, we heard coach can't be touch on
it a little bit. What aboutfor you as the director of athletics,
take me through the last twenty fourto forty eight hours people asking you for
T shirts to my kids. Yeah, we figured that out. A lot

(20:11):
of ticket requests, I'll say that, which is a good thing. But
yeah, you find out where you'regoing. And then there's this great app
that the NCAA gives you called TeamWorks, and you just sit there waiting to
download the manual. And I thinkColin Shannon and I were sitting there pro
eight thirty just refreshing, refreshing, refreshing to find out what was happening because
you find out what hotel, youfind out when your practice time is,

(20:33):
and once you get that, it'soff and running. And we just had
such a great team of people.Colin's been phenomenal. It's crazy. He's
cut in the cheeth and he's yeah, no, he's he's fantastic and he
does what great ops folks do,which is let the coach and the players
focus on getting ready for the game. And he's been fantastic to work with.

(20:55):
So it's almost here. I wouldhave liked maybe a Friday game,
give us another day to kind ofget this thing going, but we play
Thursday. It's been fun though it'salways say it's the best busy you'll ever
be, No, absolutely, Andthen obviously that was a followed by the
news that Golden Grizzlies and Kentucky Wildcatchwill be on CBS Linear, the main
platform, the big one, thebiggest stage out there. And you know,

(21:15):
Steve, you and I you know, we do a regular segment on
the pregame show called Grizzlies where wetalk about the business side of everything that
is good for business. Two hourson CBS. That's about as good a
business as there can be no offenseto True TV, but we're not on
True TV, so yeah, noCBS play. I mean, I mean,
once you get Kentucky, you're gonnaget everyone in the even folks that

(21:36):
don't follow college of basketball. I'veheard about Kentucky and Big Blue Nations,
so you're gonna get that and peoplethat are flipping through and they see us
CBS. So you couldn't ask fora better time, a better platform.
And I guess as good as anopponent. We're the highest fourteen seed,
right, and so we got thewhat the lowest three seed? Though that
they're still pretty good. Yeah,so is it safe to say then if

(22:00):
Brown makes free throws thirteen there wereI mean, so calling Ford of the
Horizon League was sent because they've beenadvocating all season for us to be a
thirteen seed, and we've done everythingwe needed to do from a scheduling standpoint.
Credit to Greg for doing what someof his peers don't do in the
Horizon League. But Greg did allthat, and he said these are the
five games you need to watch. And I hadn't watched any of these teams

(22:21):
all year, and I'm sitting theredoing kent State Akron yes, brutal,
other one brutal. Oh my god. And then Brown, I'm like,
my gosh, this is I mean, so we were really we were extremely
close. But if we had gottenthe thirteen seed, we would have played
Alabama. And if you ask Gregwhen he comes back up there, I
don't think any of us wanted toplay Alabama. Yeah, they've seen the

(22:41):
zone before we went down there toTuscaloosa, and NATO found some ways to
carve it up. Yeah. No, absolutely, But you know, the
moral of the story is, andI talked with people about this about the
Horizon League Tournament, You're going toplay somebody tough. There is no escape
at this point. Like you're goingto play a tough team. Yeah,
I mean Fort Wyne wasn't an eightseed. Trust, but you're gonna have
to play goodeams. You gotta haveto play good teams. You're gonna have

(23:02):
to be good teams. And ourguys are so locked in and they're such
a great team. You gotta doit. You gotta do it and proof
folks. Talking with the director ofAthletic Steve Waterfield here on the Greg Campy
Show. We're live at our J'sPub in Rochester, Hills. So Steve
about that, Is there any morelight that you can kind of shed on
that whole what's the most what's thewhat's the biggest thing that you have to
deal with that we probably wouldn't thinkthat you would have to deal with what's

(23:26):
associated with the NCAA tournament. Thatprobably flies over everybody's head, including mine
right here. Yeah, I meanit's there's always things that come up.
Part of it is just getting frompoint A to point B. And thank
goodness, we're busting charter flights especially, they almost warn you ahead of time,
be careful. We don't know whenyou're gonna get a flight to get
home and get to where you go. I think the other piece is just

(23:47):
dealing with and I hope we getto deal with it and you win,
and then the short turnaround and planningthat we've already got a tentative meeting plan
for Friday. But at the endof the day, it's a business trip
and we're gonna put our coaches inour student athletes in the best position to
win a game and just a biggerstage. Yeah, but Steve, you
around the team, you know everystep of the way too as well.

(24:10):
And and look something that I don'tthink a lot of people know you.
You know, you got to knowthis basketball team as well. You will
go out to lunch with some ofthe players you know, during the season
as things were going along. Iwould imagine because based on because I know,
because you and I have talked aboutit, but I would also imagine
this didn't surprise you as it mayhave surprised some other people out there,

(24:30):
just based on what you knew ofthese guys. Yeah, I mean,
so I asked Colin Shannon, Hey, set some times away, and let
me give me a group of guys. I'm going to take them out to
lunch and we'll just just talk. And so he would put it on my
calendar and he'd tell me, yougot four guys are going to show up
at your office and you're gonna takethem to lunch. And I don't think
there was a rhyme or reason towho he put together, but it was
a great time just to be aroundthem and to talk about things that it

(24:52):
wasn't related to necessarily basketball. Wetalked about a whole host of things,
and you knew pretty quickly it wasa different type of team. Good way.
I've been around a lot of teamsin the twenty plus years doing this,
and you can see the ones it'sjust different and this one was different,
and that difference made a difference, and I think you see that in
the on the court, off thecourt. Just a great group of men,

(25:15):
and they're not young men anymore. They're men, and they're just a
great group and it was fun tobe around them. There's more Celtics fans
and I wish that we had onour team that I found out and we'll
go through that. I'm seeing Jackright there. It's sadly he's a Celtics
fan, but it was it justneat to find out about what they're doing,
what they're studying, what their aspirationsare. I asked Isaiah what the
best hot chicken place was in Nashvillebecause I was going to be heading down

(25:37):
there in a few weeks and helet me know that. So it's and
that's a microcosm. One of thebest parts about my job is I get
around three hundred or so student athletesand just to be able to get to
know them better in the in thiskind of my capacity and working with them
more closely, it was just areal joy. This year and I was
so happy to see them win becauseyou just want good things to happen to

(25:57):
a good group guys. And itdid. And so let's see, let's
see what happens Thursday. That's prettymuch Jack Golkie's only flaw. He's like
he can run for office. Hegets point. Yeah, but yeah,
take the Celtics thing out. Idon't know how that happens, but we'll
look past. No. But againwe are talking the director of athletic Steve

(26:18):
Waterfield. While you're hearing it remindsme too. We talked about the business
side of the tournament for those thathave asked about it. Streaming the radio
broadcast works a little differently for theNCAA tournament. Westwood One owns all the
streaming rights to NCAA basketball game soas a part of that agreement, if
you want to stream the game, you can stream the Oakland call on the
Varsity App. So what you'll haveto do is you'll have to get the

(26:41):
Varsity app on your phone and thatis where you'll have to listen to the
radio call for Oakland and also twoon the radio on twelve seventy AM and
ninety seven point one HD three soI'm glad you're here. That reminded me
of the business. That's good tosay. I guess said you have to
pay. I think we had topay eleven dred bucks or something. But
I think Kentucky's got forty and here'sa big nation. So here's here's the

(27:03):
for us. Yeah, I providevalue, a value based your value.
Yeah, I mean just yeah. They west Wood one, they charge you
a rights fee to do your gamesand things like that, and it's based
on how many affiliate stations you have. Kentucky basketball is on forty one stations
across the Midwest, so there's anassociated fee. So yeah, cost Kentucky's
athletic department about forty grand. Ithink they can afford it. I think

(27:23):
they can think the way to getit done. For those that listen to.
Colin Shannon on our previous edition ofthe Pregame Show talked about the fact,
like we order our gear from Nikeand wait for it to come in,
Kentucky gets a semi truck from Nikethat pulls up and is unloaded by
movers. So but I love itthough. That's the way it is fine.

(27:44):
Fine, because they're throwing the ballup on you at seven ten on
Thursday. They're putting the ball upin the end and whoever's gonna win is
gonna win exactly. No, Ido. I do love it. But
Steve, Oh, there was aTwitter questions for you yea yours ask Campy
slash Steve portion of the Greg campbe Show MD fund eighty nine. This

(28:06):
is for the athletic director, SteveWaterfield. When will we see banners in
the arena again? Yeah? Addedin Gregson that those cups from Gregory K.
You know what I was told isprior to my arrival, they put
new lights in and with the bannersit created some issues with shadows and things
in the court. I obviously wasn'tthere to see it. I don't feel
like putting all the banners up andthen finding out that that was in fact

(28:26):
a problem and then taking them alldown. We've talked about ways to honor
and recognize, maybe with one bannerthat just add years years years years to
it, with the new practice facilitythat we're going to open up hopefully next
spring, and other ways to kindof honor recognize all the accomplishments, not
just of the men's team, butthe women's team. And then of our
volleyball team that also uses that astheir competition court. So I don't think
you're going to see what it usedto look like, but there's ways for

(28:48):
us to try to recognize the accomplishmentsof this team and previous teams of all
the sports that use that as theircompetition site. All right, Steve,
Well, I had to put youon the spot for a minute. That's
fine, that's good. I've answeredthat one before. Yeah, we're good.
That's a good question. All right, give it up for Steve Waterfield,
everybody the director of athletics sixty times. Steve, appreciate absolutely. We'll
be back with the as abortion ofthe show gets your questions in on Twitter.

we do that? Will I geta sandwich with the fries too? All
right, there's a to do it, man. Huh. Absolutely, people
are gonna want shirts, though morepeople are gonna watch shirts if that's okay.
But yeah, let's do it onTwitter. Pittsburgh Marty the first in

(32:09):
as always, so you know it'sa regular show. Can't wait to see
you guys again this week, whichwe happen to be going to Pittsburgh.
As a matter of fact, campyour rugged early season out of conference schedules.
What prepares you for teams like Kentucky. What are some of the additional
things you or your staff or yourplayers do to mentally and physically prepare for
moments like this. Well, Idon't think there's anything that's going to be

(32:32):
bigger than what we did because ofthe pressure that was on it. You
know, this is the reward foryou know, winning a conference. Like
I said the other night, that'sour ninth conference championship in the last twenty
four years. And it's our asyou said, our fourth third time to
the NCAA Tournament in fifteen years andfourth and fourth and twenty So the pressure

(32:54):
is all on that. This isyou know, now we've got a chance
to shoe and so we're not gonnado anything different. We played at Ohio
State, at Illinois, at MichiganState, at Dayton, at Xavier.
If that didn't get us ready forthis moment, then nothing's gonna get you
ready for this moment. And weplayed well in those games. We lost
some close games early in the yearon those in those places, but it

(33:19):
helped us win all those close gameslater in the year. And then when
we finally climb the mountain at Xavier, they know they can win. I
mean, I do not have tosay a word to them about winning Thursday
night. They know they can. It's just a matter of whether they can
do it, you know, whetherthey can go and perform and have their
A performance. We're we're gonna needan a game performance on Thursday night,
no question, no question about that. When we talk about the matchup against

(33:40):
Kentucky, they have some stats onthere that we'll discuss with your camp.
And oh, by the way,for everyone that's in attendance here, we
have we have Golden Grizzlies team postershere. Jack Golkie and Blake Lantman are
here, So it feel free tocome up and grab one of these if
you want. I'm sure the guysbe happy to autograph them for you.
So make sure you make your wayup here for that. If you've got
a question, fire it in rightnow. Jake Wallock, Jake was in

(34:00):
Indianapolis, was really emotional too, camp he was. He was really really
fired up that we got that win, says with Jack Golkie on the floor.
Another dimension is added to the offense. Will starting Jack be considered giving
wanting to reduce the risk of aslow start offensively similar to the Cleveland State
game? If not, what's thebenefit of Jack coming off the bench compared

(34:21):
to starting? Thanks coach. Okay, so the answer is no, why
would we change? And you knowJack, Jack started the beginning of the
year, went through a little bitof a struggle, got himself back and
should could I start him? ShouldI start him? Probably yes? But
why would we We have a Wewon seventeen out of twenty. We have
a tremendous rotation going. He playsthirty five thirty six minutes a game.

(34:45):
And the one game that I startedus him, I started the seniors against
Detroit. We were screwed. Up. We were, We didn't have our
rotation, we didn't have the comfortnessknowing. You know, the first media
timeout hits. Jack knows he's goingin, Rocket knows he's going in,
and Brew knows they're going in,and we'll have played eight guys in the
first five minutes, which is youknow what we said at the beginning of

(35:07):
the year. We have to getdeeper. We have and the only way
to do that is consistency. Consistencyis the hallmark of greatness. Why would
you change what you've done with oneseventeen out of twenty. So that's the
reason, and it's the only reason. Could I play Jack forty minutes?
Heay, he played forty minutes againstDetroit? Do I want to do that?
No? I don't think he wantsto do it. I mean they'll
say he does, but physically Idon't think he wants to do it.

(35:28):
Now. He wants to play everyminute he ken Thursday night, and you
know, just how it goes willdetermine that. But he's going to play
thirty two to thirty six minutes.Mdfund eighty nine with the question what's the
status of Isaiah Jones and Rocket Wattsfor Thursday. I think Rocket Watts is
ninety eight percent and I think Isaiah'sabout eighty percent as they both practiced yesterday

(35:50):
or Saturday and today. In today'spractice. At by the end of the
practice, Isaiah was limping in that. So I think you'll see him both.
I think Rocket will be his normalrotations. I will start Isaiah.
You know, I've never taken aguy out of the starting land up because
he was injured. As long ashe's ninety eighty five ninety percent, I'll
start him. And if I seeany holding the leg, sliding the leg,

(36:13):
anything like that, obviously we won'tplay him. Why would we,
You know, I want him becausehis skill set will be good against Kentucky.
We need rebounding and that's what hedoes. We need defense and that's
what he does. So his skillset will help us win the game,
but not if he's at eighty fiveor ninety percent. So he's going to
get the opportunity, and if hecan do it, he'll play his normal
minutes. And if he can't,then, oh say, Price will step

(36:37):
up, tone Hunter will step up, just like guys have stepped up all
year, and obviously too. Iwould imagine Rocket defensively, what he can
do that plays a part in whatthings are going forward, no doubt.
Matt from HRT says, as campy. Obviously, you're focused on your team
and what you guys do. Butdoes seeing North Carolina as a one seed
playing in Charlotte bring back memories oftwo thousand and five and that sea of

(36:59):
powder blue they had? Well, you know, two thousand and five was
such a I mean, I don'tthink that will ever be challenged on you
know, maybe my favorite moment everat Oakland University, just because and we
talked about this before. It wasso unexpected and we weren't ready. We

(37:20):
had no idea what the big timewas, no idea what the big time
was. And all of a sudden, we are in the big time.
And like I think I told thestory here somewhere where you know, we
want it. We're up all night. I I'm doing radio shows in China.
I mean, it was. Itwas unbelievable. And then we we
get back. We get off theairplane and back in those days they could

(37:43):
you know, there wasn't the TSAand all that kind of stuff. So
we get off the airplane and wecome into the you know, like the
gate and as we're walking in,there's like a barricade with like all this
media and all that kind of stuff. And I said the maybe it was
Smitty. I said, what thehell happened here? And they were all
there for us, and we hadno idea what this would be like.
So I don't think that'll ever bechallenged. And you know, North Carolina

(38:07):
that year we played them, Weplayed Michigan State, and we played Illinois,
and all three of them were inthe final four. So we knew
what great teams were that year andit was an awesome experience. But this
is different, you know, this, this is an expected time at the
tournament. This is a team thathas overcome everything to win everything, and
they think they can. You know, we truly think we can win on

(38:28):
Thursday. So it's different than thosedays. Oh absolutely. If if anybody
has any questions about the mindset andthe matchup against Kentucky, asked Jack Golkie,
he'll convince you real quick, realquick. He's got short answers about
it. So in two thousand andfive, we win that game, and
we go and we get North Carolinaand at the shoot around beforehand, Jim

(38:50):
Nantz and his The guy that didthe games with Jim Nantz back then was
a guy named Billy Packard, Andyou know, they come to the shoot
around and they're talking to me,and it's first time I ever met Jim
and I've gotten to know him,and he's, you know, he's every
bit what you think. I mean, there isn't a nicer person in the
world and ship nance. But Ilooked at him and I said, he

(39:10):
said something. He said to me. He goes, you're the winningest coach
in NCAA history, in the NCAAtournament history, and I didn't get the
joke, and I looked at him, go what he mean. He goes,
well, you're one and all You'reYou're one hundred percent. There's no
other coach in the country. It'sone hundred percent. And I looked at
him. I said, Okay,Jim, I'll tell you what if I'm
still one hundred percent after the NorthCarolina game, I get to come sit

(39:32):
in a tower with you at theMasters. And he looked at me and
he said, I don't I don'tknow if I can do that, and
I go, no, we winthis game, and he goes, yeah,
I'm going to tell you right now, you know you can do that.
That's how sure he was. Weweren't going to win. I never
heard that one. That's a that'sa great story right there. Gievonimcherry wants

(39:54):
to know camp. How is theteam handled all the extra media attention?
That's what they want? I mean, you dream of that, right,
you dream of that. And ourguys are mature as Steve set up here.
They're met and it's all part ofthe of the whole thing. And
this is what you play for. This is the attention that they're getting.
And boy, they handle it sogood. I had a newspaper guy come

(40:15):
up to me and say, youguys say thank you. I'm not used
to that, you know, andI just that's who we are, you
know. That's what this group ofkids is. And that's why everybody's so
proud of them, and that thereI heard a tray On on an interview
say, you know, there wereno egos, There were no everybody was

(40:37):
humble. They talked about when Golkigot here, how he came in,
he wasn't entitled, and this groupis just messed because there isn't any of
that. There's there is none ofthat and that's why they're good. This
one, I'm going to jump tothe front of the line here. This
one comes from Bobby Naubert. Asa matter of fact, hashtag ask Campy,

(40:58):
Hey camp When Coach Bobby at firstcame on this Coach Campy Show and
said he was going to be payingBobby by the win? Does that win
me by the win? Does hehave an a mountain mine? Now that
we're up to twenty three wins fromCoach Bobby and yeah, I thought it
would be about fifty cents of wins. So we'll go to McDonald's after this
and I'll take carry Bobby's eleven fiftyright, Yeah, yeah, you can

(41:22):
get maybe a half a big Well. I gave a lady a half a
big Mac the other day and shewas okay with that, So I'm good
at that. I know how todo that in that thing. Eh.
Thanks for your question, mister Aubert, Thank you for listening to the Greg
Campy Show. At Lakers twenty four, Andrew wants to know when and how
did you meet John kyla Pari andhow a flinch how influential has he been

(41:44):
on your own program? Well,John, there's a guy in the in
the industry industry now, you know, twenty twenty five years ago, it
was one was a very very powerfullobbyist indie Indian Street, a guy named
Wes and he was known as WorldwideWest. And and Uh, I got

(42:05):
to know Wes because of Ral Marshall, and Wes took an interest in Ral
helped Ral get to the NBA.And I don't know if Ral would have
gotten there without Wes. And soI've been indebted to West my whole life,
and just thanking him on how hereached out and helped our program at
a time we were brand new andnobody knew anything about us, and he

(42:28):
he got he introduced me to Johnand and then you know Brandon Weims,
who sent me a text today sayingit's the Weims Bowl. Yes, you
know, because Brandon was a GAfor Cal and uh and then was my
assistant and he played high school basketballwith Lebron, and he and Lebron are

(42:50):
to this day best friends. Imean, when Brandon was here, Lebron
came to a game in the arena, and when we played in Cleveland,
Lebron was always at those games. And so through all that I got and
no Cal, and then as Igot to know him, became friends with
him. Cal did this every year, he did this friends and Family clinic.
And what he would do is he'dbring all you know in what they

(43:13):
called their basketball family in and we'dspend a weekend in Memphis at the time
at a casino. So we hadsome fun at night and that. But
what we did is we were inthe gym all day and we just talked
basketball. And there would be fifteento twenty coaches and I'm telling you all
the superstar coaches, Sean Miller,I mean you just all these people that
were in there, and I gotto be there and I got to suck

(43:37):
all that up and that. Andthen the guy that invented the dribble drive
offense was at one of them. And that guy I sat next to him
at a dinner and he convinced methat I should run the drible drive.
So I asked Cal about it,and he sent John Roebick, his assistant
to Oakland back in maybe two thousandand seven or eight, and taught me

(43:58):
and my staff the dribble drive. And that's been our offense for the last,
you know, kind of our offensefor the last twenty years worked out
pretty well and it's been really good, right And and you know Cal said
last night in his press thing,he goes, they run it better than
we do now, but the reasonwe do is because they don't run it
anymore. He left Memphis and wentto Kentucky where he's got seven footers galore.

(44:19):
So you know, you run thedribble drive when you only have one
real post player, and so youknow, it just we became friends.
I'm going to tell you this aboutJohn and you know he gets he gets
a bad rap sometimes for you know, but all coaches get bad raps because
fans hold on to stuff and saythings and that. But when my mom,
when my mother passed away a yearago on a game day, he

(44:45):
not only reached out to me onthat game day, he reached out to
me for about three weeks in arow on a constant basis. He's a
very religious man. He goes toMass every day. And you know,
I did this for your mom andMass to dad, did this, and
I mean it was a it wasn'tjust hey, here's a text. I
hope everything's okay. I mean itwas a sincere you know, unbelievable thing.

(45:05):
And then the last thing I'll say. And I showed this to Tony
Paul last night, and I guesshe tweeted it. I really haven't had
time to go through all that stuff. But we played at seven o'clock on
Tuesday night, right. The gameended at nine. And when I said
this in the press conference, Ipicked my phone up in the locker room
and we finally got to the lockerroom and then to the press conference.
I looked down at my phone andthere were five hundred and forty some text

(45:30):
messages, and by the time thepress conference was over, it was a
thousand and so when I went backand I opened them up, I went
all the way back to nine o'clock. So, you know, I didn't
want to miss anybody, so Iwent back to nine o'clock and at nine
oh one, the first text messagewas John call party and congratulating us,
and he watched the second half andthat, and I text him right away.

(45:51):
I said, you know, we'llprobably end up having to play and
his answer was I hope not.And I was joking, you know,
I didn't realize it was going tohappen. And then so as soon as
it happened last night and I hada free minute. I called him and
I texted him and then he calledme and we just we were laughing about
it. But you know, hesaid he's gonna kick our ass. So
well, just because he loves us, he doesn't mean he ain't gonna beat

(46:14):
us. Is basically his message tome, Well, just because you love
him doesn't mean you're not gonna beathim. Right, I didn't say that,
man, Right? Nah? No, all right? Hashtag asked Campy
here on Twitter. Craig Reeler wantsto know who's a better golfer camp Here,
Kalapari. Oh wait, they're noteven close. He got asked that
last night at his press conference andhe he him hauled it. But it's

(46:37):
not I'll take him on anytime hewants to try. I mean, especially
if it's for money, because he'sgot a lot of money. And then
we'll wrap it up with this campobviously. I want to talk about the
Kentucky game as well. John Henley, coach, With the extra layoff from
the Horizon League Championship game to comparedto the other conferences I played this weekend,
how do you make sure Russ doesn'tset in and on the flip side,

(46:58):
how is it helping healing the bumpsome bruises of a long season.
Well, that's always a worry. But I just think because of the adrenaline
of this and because this is areward, it's not and that you don't
have the fear factor in there thatyou have during I think Youngstown really had
a bad deal. They they werethe only team that didn't play on Saturday
in the conference that last week aconference played. We had an odd number

(47:19):
team, so one team, sothey played their last game on Wednesday,
and because they were the two seed, they went eight days without playing,
and I think that hurt them. And we could say the same thing now
we'll be nine days or ten dayswithout having played. But I just think
it's different. And so in practice, you know, we're really we're not
doing much. We're running, we'reshooting. I don't why they get hurt.
I don't. We don't need toget better at anything right now.

(47:42):
We just need to sustain. Andso there might be some nerves, There
might be some you know, missmissed opportunities early in the game, and
maybe not. I don't know,but I'm not worried about it. I
really, I'm really not worried aboutit. Our guys are so tough that
they'll they'll find a way, allright. We will take our final break

coach, Greg Campy. My nameis Neil Ruhl. Happy to have you
all and appreciate this is incredible thisscene in here, Camp. The room
is jam packed. People are excited, ready to go. It's been that
way all year though. This Yes, it's been the best best year ever
of this show, and I thankeverybody. All Right, Camp, let's
get into it. Golden Grizzlies KentuckyWildcats, and everybody knows the stats.

(51:04):
Everybody knows the numbers, everybody knowswhat Kentucky is about their college blue blood
college basketball blue blood. What's itgoing to take. I'll say what I
told our team and what I've toldthe media. I'll say it one more
time. I don't think we couldhave gotten a better situation. I don't
think we could have gotten a betterseed, a better opponent. And this
is why we got the blue bloodof blue blood's Kentucky. Maybe twenty years

(51:31):
ago UCLA could argue with them thatthey're the greatest, but today, over
you know, the last seventy yearsor whatever, Kentucky is the blue blood
of college basketball. They have thelargest most vocal fan base in the in
the country. I mean, there'sthere's nothing. They call them Big Blue

(51:51):
Nation, and there's nothing like it. All right. Their radio station is
you know, they have a itgoes all over the country because they've got
fans everywhere. They have arguably thebest coach in the country. I mean,
I think he's obviously with my friendshipwith him in that, but he
and the guy in East Lancey, and I think you could argue either one,
but for me, arguably the bestcoach in the country. And we're

(52:16):
playing at seven o'clock on CBS infront of the whole world. We're not
on True TV, as Steve said, We're not on HB whatever. We're
not. We're not seven o'clock primetimegame. Michigan State's playing at New Right
they're the very first game here, right so we're playing Kentucky in the most

(52:37):
prime time. So if we arewho we think we are, and we
are who we want to be,we got a chance to show the world,
right well, we got a chanceto show the world, and our
players have a chance to make aname for themselves to you know, let
everybody know what Oakland basketball is about. You can't ask for anything better than

(53:00):
that, you just can't, youknow. And our guys understand and know
how, they'll know how to winthe game. They'll know what they have
to do, and they'll they'll knowthat they have got to continue to do
everything we've done all year to competeagainst a level team like that. They
have done it and they know theycan. It's just a matter now.
As you would say, the horsesare in the barn or the hazen whatever

(53:22):
you say, that stupid stuff yousay, the you know, the uncooked
steak and all that kind of stuff. They know what to do. And
I am. I am very atease and at peace with it. You
know, no matter what happens,I'm gonna walk out of there knowing that
I got the greatest group of kids. They gave Oakland University and myself one

(53:44):
of the greatest years ever. AndI believe they're going to compete. I
really do. I think I thinkthey will. You know, we've got
to We can't have Kentucky have theshooting night that that Fort Wayne or Right
State had against us or Dayton. You know, we can't have that.
And Kentucky's capable of doing that. They're they've got They're the number one three

(54:05):
point shooting team in the country, number one by by a little bit too.
Yeah, and they don't shoot aton of them, which is good.
And they're more Fort Wayne than theyare. Now. If Kentucky fans
are listening to this, they're gonnacall me the biggest idiot in the world
that I'm comparing them to Fort Wayne, who they don't even know who that
is. You're trying to do atransitive property. That the rule for our
fans. If any Blue people arelistening, for our fans to understand what

(54:30):
your team is, they are FortWayne on steroids, Okay, they're They
shoot it from the same positions theyplay like Fort Wayne does. They don't
score at the rim in the halfcourt other than drives. They don't throw
into the post, you know, and beat you in there like Fort Wayne
doesn't do that. It's all driveit or shoot to three. The big

(54:52):
thing for them they get they geta lot of easy baskets. You don't
shoot the percentage the shoot unless youget easy baskets. But they get theirs
in transition a steal and a runoutand they out athlete you down the floor
and you're a step and dunk andpass it up the floor and you're springing
back and the guy's open and shootsthe three, and all of a sudden
they go bang, bang bang, and they're up eleven. So now you've
got to increase the pace and thenall of a sudden the game's out of

(55:15):
control. And that's how you know. I've watched them play a lot this
year, not because I thought wewere gonna play them, just because it's
Kentucky. And I've seen them withwith you know, mood swings of you
know, they'll be up seventeen oreighteen, and then they're down six,
and then they're up twelve again. You know, it's just the way they
play, and so Fort Wayne inour league is similar to that. So

(55:35):
that's why I say they're Fort Wayneon steroids for us to win the game,
you know it scores got my magicnumber seventy four. If they get
over seventy four, for us towin the game, we're going to have
to have one of the most unbelievableshooting nights we've ever had, which we
could do right. Our team's capablegoing out there and going fifteen for twenty
three or twenty four from the three. There's two guys in this room that

(55:57):
have done that this year. Yeahand so, and we've done that,
you know, so we're capable ofdoing that. But we don't want to
rest our chances to win on somethinglike that. We want to rest our
chances to win on controlling Temple, keeping the score in the sixties low seventies,
making Kentucky score against our zone, making them score against our zone,
not put backs, not we turnit over and they get runouts, you

(56:22):
know, pick sixes and things likethat. We can't have that. There's
going to be a couple because they'reKentucky. But if the Temple turns like
that, analytically, if we cankeep the game into sixty five possessions,
we will have a chance. Ifwe can keep it to sixty possessions,
we'll really have a chance. Idon't know if we can do that,
but if we can, we'll reallyhave a chance because one of the things

(56:44):
we do want to do in ourzone, we'll get steals, and we
can't walk it up. If weget a steal, we got to go
score. And you know, soif we score and then a game gets
a little faster, that'll help them, but it won't kill us. So
we do have to pick our spotsto play fast. But for the most
part, if we don't have anodd man rusher and an advantage, we've

(57:06):
got to get down and we've gotto run our stuff, and we've got
to execute our stuff the best we'veever executed. It can't. And two,
just to take a look, Imean the level of talent they're Kentucky.
Obviously they're going to have that superhumanlevel of talent. They got three
draft, they got three Their sixman could be the number one pick in
the draft. Yeah, everybody's sayingthat. I was talking to Tony Paul
about it last night and he doesn'tknow, he didn't know a lot about

(57:30):
Kentucky, and I said, yeah, you know, we've Shepherd could kill
us. And he a couple ofseconds later, comes back and goes he
doesn't even start right, and Igo, exactly right, exactly the guy.
He's a lottery pick and he's maybethe number one maybe the number one
pick. There they're saying it's probablya lot he'll be the at least,
at a minimum, the first Americanplayer taken. So I mean it's that's

(57:51):
opens and so you know, Idon't know if Golkie's going to be the
first guy taking in the draft. So maybe they got the advantage on this.
Maybe I should start Golky tomorrow night. Maybe yeah, Well, Goal
will hold out to when the Celticsare picking anyway, so that it wouldn't
matter, you know, So hewould he would don't want to play for
the Bucks, no Celtics, hesaid, yeah, absolutely, Camp.

(58:14):
You know, the assistant general managerof the Bucks played for us. I
yeah, yeah, he's gonna giveyou a chance. You might want to
say, yes, yeah, Ilove the Bucks, right, I love
the Bucks. Camp final, Ilove the Bucks too. I do too.
Yeahah, I do too. Finalminute and a half or so of
the show. What else you got? I just and I tried to do

(58:35):
this last night at the event.I probably didn't do it very well,
but I just I just want tothank the support people at Oakland University.
What a job they've done this year. Gives his team and Steve's team and
SWAT and I mean the people inthe in the rooms that you know,
the donor rooms and things like that. They work their butts off and it's
kind of cool when you have successlike this. You know, everybody's excited

(58:59):
and it makes it better. Butthe last twelve years they've been doing it,
you know, I mean, they'vebeen doing it forever, and they
do it as good as you cando it, and just publicly, i'd
like to thank all them and Colin. I know Steve said something, but
Collin's what a job he's done forus this year and he better not screwed
this weekend. Up there you go, everybody, all right, big thank
you to Greg Hessen back in thisstudo, Jimmy Kennedy as well. That'll

(59:22):
do it for the Greg Campy Show. We'll see you all in Pittsburgh on
CBS seven o'clock on Thursday night forthe Coach Greg Campy. My name is
Neil Rul. Thanks for listening toeverybody. Well, see you lighter,
