It's time for the Greg Campy Show, presented by r Jay's Pub. Let's
go live to r J's Pub inRochester Hills. Here's Coach Campy and the
voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neil Rule. What is going on everybody, Well,
welcome back to another episode of theGreg Campy Show. We are lying
(00:23):
from r J's Pub in Rochester Hills. As always, of course, he
is a coach Greg Campy. Myname is Neil Rule, the voice of
the Golden Grizzlies and camp Look. You know this show has set records in
its time, the highest rated showon this station at this time. Today
we set yet another record, thewarmest Greg Campy Show on record, never
(00:43):
been seventy one degrees for The CampyShow before. Now they got the doors
open. I'd rather be sitting outside. It looks like they got a bottle
of wine. Yeah, he's gotto figure it out. How Yeah?
Absolutely? Uh. Camp Big Timeshow obviously lined up, got a couple
of special you'll guess the awards droppedtoday. But before we get into the
news portion of the show, I'mjust happy to see you here. Now,
(01:07):
your boss at McDonald's was kind enoughto let you out of your shift
early. Yeah, let you outhere. I told the training the lady
that was training me, I toldher, I said, you're nervous,
you're gonna lose your job. I'mgonna take that job from you, right.
I got some great stories though that. My favorite story though, was,
Uh, some guy ordered a dietcoke. It's all he ordered.
(01:30):
So he drove up and I lookedat him and I said, you can't
afford food. I'll give you fourfree tickets to the Oakland game Thursday night
since you can't afford food. Andhe looked at me and goes, I'll
take them, and then he said, if it's free, it's me.
(01:51):
Well that's a that's a theme witha lot of people here right now.
Camp. Everybody's looking to take youup on the on the dinner off.
I'll we order of mine before weleave. I'm sure you will. I
told I told Russ that I didn'twant any stake or lobster anything on the
menu tonight, So that's not whatthey told me. Yeah, I'll be
getting the first ever lobster tale formar J's pum. Everybody, no but
(02:12):
Camp obviously an outright Horizon League titlegreat Senior Night, great win over Detroit.
It was just a great, greatday for Oakland University at the Oakland
University Credit Union Arena. Yeah,it was a really good way to wrap
up just an unbelievable season. AsI've said a million times, just you
know, I just love this team, man, that they're just they do
it right. They're everything we'd wantas a fan, as a father,
(02:37):
as you know, anything. They'reeverything I would want them to be.
And they've led that way the wholeyear and and it paid off and rewarded
them with a championship and nuts. But you know, there's another championship that's
a little more important that we're goingafter. But to step back from that
and look at it, I thoughtthat was you know, I love our
Senior Night, and I thought itwas just unbelievable, very emotional, but
(02:58):
very cool too to give those fourguys their chance to express themselves in front
of you know, all the peopleat Stay too. I'm just so excited
about how many people stayed for him. Yeah, the people definitely mobilized out
on the Blacktop, that is forsure. In camp you knew what you
were going to get from Detroit.Obviously a big time effort from them.
They came out, they played hardthat it was a game that came right
(03:19):
down to the very very end.But as it typically was, your guy
and certainly our guy and the HorizonLeau Player of the year trade talents and
with some big buckets at the end, it was pretty fitting, wasn't it
for him to kind of close itdown like that? Yeah, but I
think all four seniors made a hugeplay in the last three minutes of the
game. You know, Blake justburied that shot from actually two it was
five for ten in the game, but the one was just you know,
(03:43):
just with unbelievable confidence at a criticaltime. Goki with the step back three
rocket got to the rim after nothaving played a lot in the second half
and we needed a basket late andhe ripped the ball and got all the
way to the rim, and thenobviously trace three point played end. It
was huge. But all four ofthe seniors in their last regular season game
at home, you know, andthat's kind of a picture or the painting
(04:10):
of what we were all year.Different people. I'm not that talented with
those words, man, but itwas it showed what we were as a
group. You know, we wedidn't have to rely We relied on the
unit, you know, the team. And and I've had some you know,
as a kid, as a youngcoach, I always tried to express
(04:30):
there was no iron team. ButI had a pretty selfish player once say
to me, yeah, but there'san M and and eeah. So we've
we've kind of learned, you know, that that you win when you have
teams like this that you know, you spread the wealth and and uh,
but it was great to see allfour of those seniors step up in the
last minutes that game. And Detroitplayed a great game. I mean that
(04:54):
they really really played good. Andwe knew that was going to happen.
Uh, you know, you andI've talked about it many times. We
wanted him to win a game.We didn't want him to come in there,
you know, and then it didn'tmatter. We knew what that game
meant to them, that they couldruin our season, and in a rivalry,
that's what that's what the rival triesto do. And our kids handled
it. We had a little youknow, we were a little shaky early,
(05:16):
and we figured it out and thelast five six minutes that game,
we were really really good at theoffensive end. The Greg Campy Show brought
to you by Henry Ford Sports Medicine, the official team physicians for Oakley University

But camp also some breaking news fromthe program. The Horizon League announced the
season honors, of course, headlinedby a lot of Oakland names. As
(05:41):
you would expect, Jack Goldkie wasnamed the six Man of the Year in
the Horizon League. And yeah, absolutely absolutely, and camp you know,
just just to start with Jack, and here's somebody that came in. You
made six threes at Ohio State.I think there was a lot of adjustment
to him and his as the season, you know, progressed, he came
(06:02):
into some challenges and then he wasable to answer those challenges and just be
a clutch, clutch shooter coming downthe stretch of the season. Yeah,
And a lot of that is,you know, our injuries early in the
year when Blake, you know, after game Blake went out for six or
seven games, and you know, that kind of messed with the alignment and
who plays and rotations in that andthen when Blake came back, you know,
(06:26):
I was really believing that in DQand that we had to do some
special things with him to get himwhere we needed to get him. And
I went to Jack and told him, you know, I'm going to take
you out of the starting lineup andbring you off the bench and let's go
win the sixth Man of the Yearaward. And he still played the same
amount of minutes in most games. You know, he average over thirty minutes
(06:46):
a game with our starter minutes. But you've got to give him a ton
of credit to But it's again,it's what this team's about. They understand
that the hole, you know, and he took who doesn't want to start,
you know, everybody wants to bea starter, but he understood that
this team, you know, whenI took him and Rocket I was starting
lineup, changed things around. Wewon I think thirteen of our last sixteen
(07:09):
or fourteen of our last seventeen orsomething like that from the point we did
that, And obviously his role didn'tchange, it was just how the rotations
worked. And I was really pleasedthat he was able to win that award
because he not only did he deserveit, but he sacrificed for it.
So yeah, I'm really really pleasedto got it. Also, to remember,
(07:29):
you can get involved with the show, send us a tweet with the
hashtag ask Camp. He will betaking those. Those are starting to fly
in right now, So get yourquestions out there for Camp and we will
get to those coming up in abouttwenty five minutes or so from now,
and we'll get all your thoughts outthere and all your questions of Camp will
answer them all. Some more newswith the program as well. Blake Lampman
(07:50):
named Horizon Leak's Second Team performer thisseason as well. Absolutely give it up
for Blake everybody, and you know, we've talked about this all season long,
and it's something where Camp the toughnessis unquestioned, everything he has to
go through to get out there onthe floor, and he answered the bell
pretty much every single time. Yeah, I was a very deserved award.
(08:13):
And what you have to look attoo, this was not a normal year
in the Horizon League. I mean, there's eight unbelievable teams in this league
and there are a lot of reallyI mean, like I said last week's
show, there's six guys that couldbe Player of the Year in this league,
and one of those guys made secondteam. You know, and I'm
sure their fan base isn't happy aboutthat, but there was only there's only
(08:35):
five guys, right, and there'ssix guys that could have been Player of
the Year in the league. Andif I don't know, if you look
at Tanner Holden and surely he couldhave been too. I mean, there's
just so many really good players, and for Blake to leap frog all those
guys and get into the second teamshows you just you know what kind of
year he had and who he is. And I think what I really like
is, you know this, Theseteams are voted on by the eleven coaches.
(09:00):
There's no media, there's no outside, It's the eleven coaches. And
that shows the respect that the coacheshave for Blake Lamtman and what he's done
in his career. And they watchedhim grow from a scrowny little kid to
this guy that you know, isjust an unbelievable basketball player. And they've
heard me talk about his leadership andall those kind of things. So you
(09:22):
know that he was named that bythe coaches. And if you're gonna get
named by anything, it's I'm notallowed to vote for Blake. Coaches can't
vote for their own players. Soit's the other ten coaches that voted for
him, So that that in itselftells you, you know, the respect
that they have for exactly. No, absolutely, and yeah, Blake certainly
not scrawny anymore. We've talked aboutthat a lot during the broadcast. You
(09:43):
know that the commitment he made physicallyto reshape his body in camp throughout the
season too, Like with all thepractices and everything when we're on the road.
I've told this story before, gointo the hotel gym to work out,
like the hotel weight room and stufflike that. There he is all
the time. Well, it goesback to that Oakland saying that everybody wants
(10:05):
to be great until they find outwhat they have to do to become great.
Well, Blake found out and hewasn't a fraud. He wanted to
become great, and he did whathe had to do and look what he
became. No. Absolutely, Andof course the Horizon League Player of the
Year really well deserved to as wellfor Trey Townson as he was named Horizon
(10:26):
League Player of the Year in camp. Absolutely give it up for Trey and
Camp. You talked about it.There's a lot of good players in this
league, and there's a lot ofguys you have to game plan for,
and Trey Townson stands at the topof that list. Yeah, he would
have been here tonight, but he'sgot class so he couldn't come. But
(10:46):
you know, here's a story forthe rest of my coaching career I'm going
to talk to our team about. Is Trey Townsend was named the player of
the year in the league and hisstats, his scoring average were anywhere near
what the other four guys on thefirst and the guy on the second team
wasn't even near. The other fourguys were the four leading scorers in the
(11:11):
league other than the kid from Detroit, or they were the leading cysts or
leading reboy they had. What TreyTownsend did and what the other ten coaches
recognized is he led his team towin, and by winning the championship,
he was rewarded as player of theyear. Is he good enough to be
player of the Year, Yes,but so were a bunch of other guys.
(11:33):
And winning is what ultimately stands youapart and everything in life, and
this is the perfect example about it. It made him stand apart from everybody
else in the league. And that'swhy he got the award, and you
know, I'm really proud of that, and I'm proud of him, and
it's still, you know, it'san unbelievable story to go from a a
(11:54):
you know, a four year oldkid that was running around the gym that
you know, dreaming to play atOakland and actually playing there. And then
you know, are a lot ofpeople ex former players that played with his
dad or in that era, thatwhen we signed him were like, you're
(12:15):
taking Townsend's kid, you know, and you know, and some of them
are in the area had watched himin high school and they thought he was
a good player, but okay, can he play it? You know?
And he went from starting every gamesince he got here to Player of the
Year. So it's a hell ofa story and I'm really happy to have
been a small part of it.No Camp, And you look at it
(12:35):
too, right because you talked aboutthe coaches and they recognizing the kind of
player that Tray is. He wasin the top ten in the league and
assists and assist a turnover ratio toit, and I think people gloss over
that a lot. With Trey's game, he will do he will make the
basketball play no matter what time ofthe game it is, what the possession
is, all that kind of stuff. He will just make the proper basketball
(12:56):
play. Well. He understands, you know, he's learned how to play
through double teams and that, andthe coaches that voted for him know that
he can get those assists because they'rethe ones that have to game plan and
decide whether to double them or not. And when they double them, like
Detroit doubled them the other night andat a crucial time of the game and
(13:16):
Chris Conway dunked because Trey found themout of the double for a dunk.
And so if you make that andTrey makes a pass like that, you
know, that's what makes him sovaluable. And again that's why they voted
for No. Absolutely, but campI mean, you know, from an
honors standpoint, certainly a very goodcap to the season. And we'll get
into the ris Lee Tournament coming uptowards the end of the show. But
(13:39):
you know, just as you takea step back, have you done that
at all? I know you're justyou're onto the next, onto the next,
onto the next. Did you takeany time to sit back and reflect
on this season at all? Ornow you do that when it's over.
No, I smoked a cigar, you know, quietly, but that was
it. I've asked them, They'vegot the rest of their lives to we
(14:03):
want to do. Enjoy Senior Nightand enjoy that evening, and they did.
We got back to work today andI've asked them and begged them to
handle the tournament just like we've handledthe season, one day at a time,
one team at a time, andprep the same way. Consistency is
the hallmark of greatness, and youhave to remain consistent, and if you
don't, something bad's going to happen. And so that's what we're trying to
(14:28):
do. We're is trying to goabout Thursday's game as consistently as we went
about every other game. That's thelesson I'm trying to teach them. And
to be honest with you, withthe amount of games played by these guys,
in the intelligence that these players have, they're going to teach that.
I don't really have to even sayit because they know it, no no
question. And speaking of that,of course, Thursday night, we do
(14:50):
know there will be a game.We do not know the opponent as of
yet, but at seven o'clock we'regoing to jump it up at the Oakland
University Credit Union Arena. Get toGoldengrizzlies dot Com and get tickets if you're
going to have them already. Can'twant to see everybody. Everybody out there.
Got a lot of people from McDonald'scoming today. I think that particularly
one guy particular. But there wasone person ordered a ten piece and I
told her there were only eight inthere because I had a couple of them,
(15:11):
but she took the tickets anyways,So all right, well that works,
all right, Camp, we'll takeour first break when we come back.
We're gonna be joined a first timehere. We're gonna we're gonna do
two guests at the same time.Blake Lampman and Jack Golkie will come up
here and join us. Coming upnext, we'll be back with more the
Greg camp Be Show. We're liveat r J's Pub in Rochester Hills.
(15:35):
They say consistency is the key tosuccess. They weren't wrong. So how
about driving a beer that's consistently smooth, consistently refreshing, and consistently light.
You might just find that the roadof success can be pretty enjoyable. Nicolotte
Ultra the perfect balance of taste andrefreshment and only two point six carbs and

My name is Neilrul of Voice ofthe Golden Grizzlies and right now,
as promise, we're joined by twoof the best shooters in the Horizon League,
(17:49):
a couple of honorees as well acouple of best shooters in the country
as well. Thank you, JackGolkie, Yes it is Jack Golkie and
Blake Lampman and fellow appreciate having youout here here today, and how's it
going. It's great, Thanks forhaving us out here. Always fun to
come out here and see the crowd. Yeah. Absolutely, how you doing,
Blake doing great? This is huge. This is way bigger than the
(18:11):
last time I was here. Soyou're bumping it up and this is good
stuff, no problem, man,Blake. Will start with you named Horizon
League Second Team Performer this year becauseI know the work, because I see
the work. You know, nota lot of people see the work that
goes in behind the scenes, butI know it's it's got to be special
for you, man. Yeah, that's cool. I think we got snub
(18:33):
though, because I think my coachdeserved a Coach of the Year and he
didn't get it. But other thanthat, I mean, we got the
Yeah he's chirping, I can't hear. We got the We got the Player
of the Year, and then myaward and then Jack six Men of the
Year, all deserving. But yeah, I'm not gonna lie. I didn't.
This wasn't really the goal, especiallyafter the second game. I didn't
know if I was gonna be ableto play, and when I decided to
(18:56):
play, it wasn't to make ateam. It was to win, and
we've got the the first goal down, but we still got one to go.
What Blake, real quick too,how close were you to not play?
Because I know the discussions that wenton internally, like when we say
it was a question mark, howclose were you to not playing this year?
I was very close, very close. I got a shot in my
(19:17):
hip before we played the Toledo game, and I was gonna give it Toledo
Eastern Michigan State and then try toplay in the league games. And then
I was gonna make the decision. And I think playing good against Youngstown forced
that decision of Okay, let's keepgoing now. But uh yeah, it
was. It was a close decisionand a lot of prayer went into it,
(19:37):
a lot of talks with my family, and thank god I kept going.
So it'll be it'll be a coolstory once we kept cut the nets
down in Indy. All right therethere you go. Well, Jack,
you know, as far as faras you go, six Man of the
Year in the Horizon League, whatdoes that mean to you? It's definitely
a cool award to get. Definitelykind of like Blake's said, that wasn't
(20:00):
really the goal at the beginning ofthe year. For me, something sticks
out that coach camp. He saidat the beginning of the year, he
was talking about how these regular seasonawards that they're really cool to get,
but they don't really mean anything. And he was talking about, let's go
get some all tournament team awards downin Indy. So I think we're all
obviously happy with what happened, butwe're really going for those those tournament awards
(20:22):
in Indy. Yes, certainly,no question, no question about that one.
But you know it's jack for youthis season because I told the story
out there. You know, youcame out, You're playing at Ohio State,
your Division two transfer, and youand I talked about this a couple
of times, you know, asfar as during the season goes. And
I asked you the question, like, so you transfer here to Oakland,
(20:44):
you walk out there, you're atOhio State, and boom, you hit
him with six threes, like rightout of the gate? Was there was
there at the beginning of that season, did you say, well, this
isn't that hard? I guess Idon't think so, because anyone who watched
that Illinois game knows this pretty hard. It was rough. Sledding out there
for me that game. But Ialways I always dreamed of playing on a
(21:04):
stage like that, and took mea bit of a roundabout route to get
there. But I'm glad I I'vebeen able to have this one season and
I'm hoping that we can get tothe biggest stage and enjoy that. Talking
with Jack Golkie and Blake Lamming hereon the Greg Campy Show. We're live
at Our J's Pub in Rochester Hillsand don't forget too. The Greg Campy

oh Insurance dot com today. So, so, Blake, I'll pose a
question to you kind of that Ijust hit Coach Campy with after after the
events of Saturday night. Certainly wasa great scene and by the way,
(21:48):
props to you man. You yougave a great speech, a great speech
and I know it was from theheart, so it was yeah, no,
absolutely, did you did you takea second at all did you kind
of reflect on on the journey thatwas this year, because I know,
I know that a lot of thatsome people keep receipts. There weren't a
lot of believers in you guys atthe beginning of the year, no doubt,
(22:08):
And I definitely took a moment thatvideo that the that the media team
put together was special. And youknow, I was fine until I saw
that video and I'm seeing freshman Blakeshooting shooting threes. It didn't even recognize
the dude. And then right whenI get done, I walk over and
tray T's just a mess over there, and I'm like, dude, what
are you doing? So obviously, when when the whole time trade was gone,
(22:32):
I had the towel over my head. I couldn't keep it together either.
And it was a special night. It was a special night, not
even really clinching the title, butjust like everything around it, you know,
playing our rival and you know,Coach Camp he has been so good
at like not focusing on the nextgame. Normally it's oh, we got
Detroit in an X amount of days, and this year it wasn't. So
(22:53):
you get to the Detroit game,You're like, well, we haven't really
been hyping it up, and itwas just as hype as it normally is,
you know, and play rival likethat, and to bounce back like
that after we played Right State andgot our butts handed to us a little
bit. But I think that waslike one of the probably the best things
that could have happened to our team, right get the loss out early,
and then even playing a competitive gameagainst a good Detroit team like that.
(23:17):
They play so for being one andthirty, they play so hard. Yeah,
yeah, and they I talked tocoach Davis after the game, and
they got so much stuff going onover there, But for them to come
out and give us the game theydid, I think it was just perfect
for our team, and especially goingwe're gonna have a bye on Tuesday,
going into Thursday, haven't played thatgame? Was huge for us. Was
it good that Tray went last, you know, just to give everybody a
(23:37):
shot of trying to keep it togetherbecause you talk it that's the way that
stuff works. Man. When it'san emotional scene, everybody can keep it
together. But the second one guycracks, you know, you know how
that works, right? It wasit good that he went and Jack Jack
and Rockett got me too. Ididn't know about Rocket's brother, really,
I didn't even think about that, and Jack was was bringing up some memories
(23:57):
from the season, and it's justI'm definitely happy I went before Trey t
no doubt. Well, Jack,I mean, you know, just kind
of a follow up to that, you know, I mean, you're as
even keel as it gets, youknow, and even you, you know,
I saw even you out there. It was it was it was how
much of a struggle was it?At times? It definitely was. I
(24:17):
mean, like like I said, seeing Trey up there, and just I
mean, I've only been here oneyear, but all the battles we've been
through together and spent so much timewith these guys, so I definitely feel
that investment and just seeing the waythat they care about everything going on and
their reactions. I was, Iwas definitely struggling a little bit. I
was thankful I went first talking withJack Golkie and Blake Lampman here on the
Greg Campy Show. So, Blake, I have to ask you this question,
(24:41):
and you know you're going first,So Jack, you know you you
listen, You'll have an answer forthe question already. What are a couple
of your favorite moments from the seasonthis year. I mean, I know,
winning it obviously was certainly up there, and beating Detroit and all that
kind of stuff, But what aresome of the moments that maybe the fans
here don't know about. Definitely justbonding with the guys. I talked to
Travis Bator after my first year hereand I was just like, you know,
(25:03):
it's not it didn't really feel likea brotherhood. And he told me
like things that they would do.They'd have mandatory Applebee's nights and mandatory game
nights with the group, and weare so collective, so collective as a
group, and we do so muchstuff off the court. And a big,
big shout out to Kevin Beers.Every single road loss we had,
(25:23):
the next day, we had amandatory thing that we had to do as
a team, whether it was wewent and talked to a school together,
we had a guest speaker come up, We went bowling. I don't think
that was Kevin Beers's idea. Wewent bowling after Cleveland State and we won
every single game after that. Ithink it was Youngstown Milwaukee and helped me
out here. Brother Right State,Right State, So just a lot of
(25:48):
the times you let one become tooand that team didn't didn't allow us to
do that because we would come together, we would you know, do something
bigger than basketball off the court. And I think that was probably the biggest
thing for me and what helped uswith our success was that we did so
much stuff together off the court thisyear. So Jack, you're lucky obviously
because now you got this time tosit here, sit here and think about
(26:11):
it. You know, what weresome of your favorite moments? Yeah,
I mean, I would definitely agreewith Blake. I think the biggest thing
for a team's success is I mean, you can bring together a bunch of
great players, but if they don'tmesh, if they don't believe in each
other, it's it's not going towork out. So I think that's something
that's really helped us and we alwaystouch on it. Like Italy was amazing,
the Cayman Islands was a lot offun. It was a fast paced
(26:33):
thing, three games in three days. But I think being in those different
environments just really lets you get toknow the guys more and things like that,
And I mean, just so manygreat memories from I really just enjoy
kind of the atmosphere of our huddlesduring the games, and obviously no one
really gets to see that, butit's funny when things are kind of back
and forth, whether we're on adrought or things are going really well,
(26:56):
you'd be surprised the amount of gibberiusthat Blake's spew during those huddles. Things
will be going wrong and everyone willbe getting yelled at, and Blake's just
trying to make noise, just tojust to kind of take the edge off.
So that's one of my favorite memories. I would say no and Blake
just just taking that a step furthertoo. You know, there were many
many moments and I haven't seen thisbefore. And by the way, too,
(27:18):
the people over there were laughing. So we're here at the Greg Campy
show that all these people come outto with Greg Campy on the news right
now at McDonald's giving out food inthe drive through. Right now, it
is has camp jumped the shark alittle bit? Man Like? Is it
too much Greg Campy in this room? No way, man, No,
what coach is doing this? ManLike? This guy loves Oakland University,
(27:40):
loves his program, he loves winning, and I'm assuming he's trying to get
more people to the games, andhe's like, you know, I'm about
to go to the where am Igonna go? I'm gonna go to the
local McDonald's and work. I'm gonnaserve food and get like who does that?
That's why I'm he's the coach ofthe year. All props they dug
him around Green Bay. Coach dida hell of a job getting this program
right, But this is the coachof the year right here. Man.
(28:04):
But no, The question I didwant to ask, though, Blake was
and I've haven't seen this before ina decade of being around this program.
And look, we've had players thathave come through here that are great coaches,
you know, and Drew Valentine andguys like that, but I've never
seen somebody during their playing time dowhat you do. You were like a
pseudo coach on the floor. Youwere that's that's that's being nice and you
(28:26):
know, but uh, you knowI've said this before. You call the
play right, like I heard thestory, Like you did you call a
play during one of the games.Yeah, I'm gonna called a play once
or twice. And you're a coach. I said in the pro In the
post game that time, I said, it's it's not the first one I've
called, but it's the first onethat's worked. It's it's you're a coach
(28:48):
already, man. There you go. It's a show. It's insane though,
Like my coach has forty years ofexperience and he's listening to me,
Hey, I want to run thisplay any other coach. I'm thinking,
why no, I'm I do this. This is I'm the coach here,
dude. But he listens. Hehe gives me a leash and obviously was
earned through five years of going backand forth with him. But the trust
(29:14):
that he has in me gives meconfidence to go to him and say,
hey, we need Trey. Tneeds to touch the ball right now,
you know. And I did thata little bit in the end of the
game. I felt like we neededto just pound it inside. They couldn't
stop Trey, and we got thatin one at the end of the game.
That wasn't my call, but itwas a It was a hell of
a call by Coach Camp and wonus the game. So yeah, that's
I'm I got a passion for coachingone. I want to get into it
(29:37):
and I will as soon as thisbody officially breaks down on me. But
uh, hopefully those days I canpush him back a little bit. No,
absolutely, And Jack, what what? What? What do you think?
Man? As uh? As aplayer, would you play for coach
Blake Lampman. I would definitely playfor coach Blake Lamman, but I don't
know if I could. I don'tknow if I could play for someone younger
than me, so maybe, youknow, maybe not? All right,
(30:00):
Well, gentlemen, congrats on agreat season. Congrats on a regular season
championship. And I know what you'regoing to say, like the work's not
done yet, but Oakland University isbetter because you guys were here, and
that's the bottom line, man.And you guys know the respect that I
have for you in these fans'll allhave for you as well. Congratulations,
guys, We appreciate your time. Thanks much, appreciate it. All right,

Sorry, I didn't get my questionin last week. That's the first
one I missed in several years.Looking towards Thursday night's game with the opponent
to be determined, walk us throughthe practice and game prep from immediately following
last Saturday's game to seven o'clock onThursday night. Well, again, we
just because of the post game onSaturday, because of the senior day,
(33:35):
we didn't have our you know,we don't go in the locker room afterwards,
and we don't have the postgame talkand then talk about the week,
So I told him in advance ofthe game what was gonna happen, and
basically they're gonna They had Sunday off. We got back to work this morning.
We practiced for twenty five minutes, all shooting, and you know,
as a staff, we're prepping forFort Wayne, and we've got the person
(34:01):
that had Robert Morris's scout is preppingfor Robert Morris. We're prepping for Detroit,
and we're prepping for I. E. P UI. Could be any
of those four, so we're preppingfor all four of them. I would
say we've got a little more emphasisright now on Fort Wayne. And we'll
do a couple of things in practicetomorrow with you know, like Fort Wayne.
(34:22):
But then we'll have the twenty fourhour prep once we find out for
sure who we're playing Tuesday night, and tomorrow's practice will be no film,
but it'll be about a forty minuteafter the warm ups and all that kind
of stuff would be about forty minuteson the floor, and then on Wednesday
there'll be a film session on whowe're playing and about a thirty minute you
(34:45):
know, guard them and do allthe things that they do and make sure
we're ready for all the little specialspecial place all right, cap at this
time, we have a bit ofa special break right here, President Peskovitz.
It's coming up. Not my birthday, right so President Peskovitz is actually
bringing up a cake right here.Oh my god. And there it is.
(35:09):
Okay, absolutely okay, he says, congratulations. Coach can't be Horizon
League champion. So there that is. And President Pascovitz, thank you.
President pescovit's a longtime veteran of theGreg Campy Show. By the way out
here most weeks cut her nets downfor the first time in her life.
(35:30):
She enjoyed it too. She'll reallyenjoy the next one then, right,
yeah, somebody somebody told me.Somebody told me that she actually said on
a radio show today that it wasone of the highlights of her career.
Now, think of all the thingsshe's done in life, especially in the
medical field, and cutting down thenets that that tells you the leadership that
(35:51):
we have at Oakland and why thingsare great here. Give it up for
President Pescovitz. Everybody, absolutely, and again she's a veteran of the show.
She comes out most weeks. Yeah, So now that everybody's getting a
free meal. They're also getting apiece of cake for dessert. There you
go, absolutely, but no,it is the ask Campy the show.
(36:12):
Yes, that was very very cool. Get your tweets in last you know,
speak now or forever, hold yourpiece at least until the next Great
Campy Show. Angie s. Whas become a pretty big contributor, certainly
during the radio broadcast and everything.Hashseg ask Campy camp Would you ever consider
being miked up during a game?Oh? I've done that. Yeah,
oh yeah. In the years ago, years ago, we had when the
(36:40):
Ballet Sports was Fox Detroit, wedid a we did Inside Oakland Basketball.
We did four shows a year, and I still think, you know,
I wish that that hadn't gone awaybecause I think it was unbelievable. We
signed k Felder, one of theall time greats at Oakland University. The
morning he came in on his visit, his mother sitting there talking to her
(37:05):
said I just watched the Inside Oaklandand I know I want him to come
here. That's how powerful this showwas. And I miked up in games
now, I will say this,I had writer first refusal on anything that
they put out. The editorial control. I had editorial control, and they
and I needed it. I neededit. It was funny though, because
(37:29):
I spoke at a at a atan event, and somebody with a lot
of money somehow got some of thoseouttakes, and before I spoke, he
was playing some of those outtakes. And I'm glad I had editorial control.
Absolutely. Uh Ask campy The GreatCampus Show brought to you by farmer owned

(37:52):
with one real milk from local Michigandairy Farms. Prairie Farms, a proud
sponsor of Oakland University Athletics. HappyCows, real Milk. We put that
one back in their camp because thething the people wanted it more questions with
the hashtag ask camp in what makesa cow happy? I would imagine what
do they What do they eat?Do they the grass? Right? So
(38:14):
I'd imagine good grass probably makes thempretty happy? Makes other people happy too?
Yeah? That does? Yeah,so it certainly does. Not that
I know anything about that, No, but I mean probably just some good
grass camp that's all they need andsome water on a hot day. Yeah.
Would I would imagine that's all thatthat would make them very happy.
Austin Davis, who's here in thehouse tonight? Camp how are we feeling
(38:35):
about the hottest Campy show on record? Please don't fact check me if I'm
wrong. No, you're your onehundred percent. It's never been this warm
before. How you feeling? Howyou hold on? Feel good? It
sat up there while the kids weretalking. It was great and look down
over Rochester. A Grizzly fan wantsno hashtag? Ask Campy, what's the
trick with the health journey camp Howcan us fans get the same result before
(38:55):
these summer days? Have your doctortelling you that if you don't do this,
you're not going to live much longer. So that usually is a very
motivating factor. It does help withthe motivation. There is no question about
that. Matt from the Horizon says, I ask Campy. With the season
winding down, starting to look aheadjust a little bit to the future,
(39:16):
but more about facilities than personnel. Can we expect any renovations in the arena,
maybe repainting on the floor, etcetera. Well, the the time
is coming for the repainting and floor. We were going to do it this
coming year. But with the practicefacility and all our emphasis on getting that
done and getting it ready, whatwe're really hoping for is that by Christmas
(39:37):
we're in the actual playing part ofthe practice facility, and then by the
summer we're in the you know, the locker rooms and the offices and everything
moves there. So our emphasis reallyis on that and not the arena.
Right now, you know, it'sstill post COVID and money is still an
issue, and we're lucky that asyou know, our president's here to did
(40:00):
she really pushed and helped us getthis practice facility through. It's a major
step, probably in my forty years. It's the most important step that we've
taken in my twenty five years asa d D one coach, the most
important stuff we've taken towards improvement. And so we're gonna put everything into that
and then I think once that's done, then we'll look at the you know,
(40:20):
the redoing of the floor and maybegetting that little blacker you know,
because we still want to keep thattheme. But obviously the new lights when
we got them a few years ago, and that kind of you know,
it's a little too shiny in there. And we we we understand all the
issues. Uh, there's just moreimportant things to take care of right now
than those things. Mister Drew Huffon Twitter as Campy coach, You've talked
(40:45):
a lot about Blake's leadership in theprogram. Is there anyone on the team
now that you could see one dayfilling that role? Well, again,
this is a very old team. You know we're gonna you know, Trey,
Jack and Blake are three leading scoresand then obviously Rocket. You know,
(41:05):
those are the leaders right now.Do I think some of the younger
guys can do it? Yeah?I think d Q's got a chance to
be a really good leader. Ithink he's d Q has been led,
and what I mean by that isthat he has embraced being led, and
I think that, you know,he's like a young child sucking it in
and figuring it out. And it'sprobably gonna go a lot on his shoulders
(41:30):
next year. Of course, alot's going to depend on who we bring
in and who's here and who isn't. But honest with you, I have
not even I mean, we talkabout recruiting and my staff's really working on
that, but my whole focus isthis group. This group is so special.
I owe them everything I have andI'm not thinking about the future.
I'm thinking about this group and gettingthrough this year. But to answer your
(41:52):
question, I would say that itprobably I don't see Chris Conway being that
guy. Chris is very mild, great young man, you know, great
student all that. I don't thinkhe's more like Trey and that it's you
know, he's a little more introverted. That's why they're such good friends.
I think. Yeah, so Idon't see it coming from him, but
I could be wrong. We'll see. Jimmy Kennedy wants to know when the
(42:15):
off season rolls around Camp, howmuch golf are you looking to play this
spring into summer. I'm only goingto play on the days that end and
why that's it, and only inonly in the morning or the afternoon,
that's it. Yeah, probably both, yeah, probably both. So So
there you have that one as well. Camp. You brought it out,
of course, you tweeted that pictureof Trey and Chris back when they showed
(42:37):
up to campus, when when theylooked like kids. I mean, I
guess that's what they were, thatthat whole dynamic like their relationship because you
know, you did touch on thatvery good complimentary pieces as far as being
roommates and stuff like that. Didyou did you kind of see that as
they got together. No, Imean I try very hard, and I
(43:00):
think they would tell you they probablyappreciate it. I try to stay out
of their way. You know,I can be a hard guy to be
around at times when you know you'repushing them to be for greatness, right,
and so I try and stay outof their way. I hear the
stories, and then you know,as they get older, I inject myself
(43:22):
more into their lives. As theyget older, because they're nearing the time
that you know, it's time togo out into the world. And that's
where I really try and inject myselfinto their lives. Early on, when
they're around, I kind of wantto just stay away. I want to
be the you know, I wantto be the dad the disciplines early and
then I want to be grandpa atthe end. You know. You know,
(43:44):
I don't know about you guys, but when you get grandchildren and their
mother says that they can't have icecream, they can't have that, and
then she leaves, the first thingI do is take them for ice cream.
Right, it's yeah. So youknow, so as they get older,
I kind of being more of thegrandfather type thing where you know,
I'm not the guy discipline and I'mnot the guy screaming. I get mad
(44:07):
at him now and then, butnot like in their first years. All
right, camp we'll take our finalbreak up the show. When we come
back, I do want to talkabout the Horizon League tournament. I got
a couple questions for you, thestructure of it and things like that,
how that kind of comes to bewhat you're looking for and all those kinds
of things as well. We'll takeour final break, come back, we'll

Pup in Rochester Hills. He isa coach, Greg Campy. My name
is Neil Rule, the voice ofthe Golden Grizzlies. Don't forget opening Round
or the Horizon the quarterfinal round ofthe Horizon League tournament coming up on Thursday
night live at the Oakland University CreditUnion, Orena. We will tip it
(46:49):
at seven o'clock. Go to Goldengrizzliesdot com get those tickets, come on
out, let's pack that place. It's March madness, everybody. The whole
thing comes down to this, solet's all get out there and act accordingly.
Make it just exactly like what itwas on Saturday. Just tough for
the tough for the opposition. Butcamp speaking of the Horizon League, tournament.
I had a couple questions for youbecause we've we've dealt with since we've
(47:10):
been in the Horizon League a coupleof different variations of the Horizon League tournament.
What what goes into that when youchange it? Because before, I
believe the last time he won theleague did in the the top two sets
got buys directly to the semi finals. That was changed up, and I
guess, just out of curiosity, how does that process work? How do
you change the tournament? Well,it's all done through the council, the
(47:32):
league office. And the first thefirst time it got changed, I had
a hand in it, and Giveshad a big hand in it too,
and that he was working with atthe Little Caesars Arena and I said,
let's bring the Horizon League tournament there, and that and that. From that
day on, they worked to getit there and they did and it went
(47:54):
from At that point, we werethe team like if in the old days
we would be hosting the whole tournamentright now, everybody would be coming to
Oakland and they would play through Friday, Saturday or Saturday, Monday, Tuesday.
And what happened when we were doingthat is it was in green Bay,
and green Bay got beat and theyhad to pick everything up and go
(48:17):
to Wright State in twenty four hours. Yeah, and it was expensive and
it didn't you know, they didn'tsell tickets the way they wanted to sell
them, because if they had thechampionship game at Green Bay, nobody would
have shown up. It was againstWright State and Milwaukee maybe or somebody,
and so that kind of changed theformat to where it is today. They
(48:39):
bid out. You know, I'mpushing to get the first, the first
two teams to go all the wayto Indy. But right now, this
is the it's been voted on,and this is the way it's going to
stay. I think through twenty five, twenty six, the next two years,
it's going to be this way,and then they're going to relook at
it again. What the league wants. It's all money driven, right,
(49:04):
It's everything College athletics today is reallykind of pushed towards money because we all
everybody needs it, right, andso we want The league wants its best
team to have the best chance toget a good seed in the NCAA Tournament.
So they're trying to the teams thatfinish first, second, third,
and fourth they're trying to those shouldnormally be your best teams, and they're
(49:25):
trying to preserve the good seed becausewe want to win games in the UNCAATE
tournament because every win in the ncaTournament is a lot of money for the
teams that are you know, andit's a six year rolling thing. And
Butler was in the league and wentto the National Championship game two years in
a row, and the league wasrolling in money for six seven years.
That's about one point two million rightafter you add up all those units rolling
(49:47):
over. It was a lot. It's a lot of money. And now
that all that money's gone, andright now we have units from when Wright
State won that playing game there thatcounts as it seems to. That's our
only unit over other than the oneyou get for participation. So we want
to win games, and it's imperativethat a team from our league gets in
there and wins some games. Sowe're going to try and solve that for
(50:08):
him this year. That's our goal. No, absolutely, I was just
I was curious about that because howdo they how do they come to the
conclusion of say, Okay, here'show we're going to do what we'll play
this first round on a Tuesday, and then we'll pair that down to eight
and go from there, like whatgoes into the competition end of it.
Yeah, there's a lot arguing backand forth. You know, there are
(50:30):
people that believe only eight teams shouldgo. The coaches don't want that because
if I'm nine, ten and eleven, I'll get fired if i don't get
in there. You know. There'sa lot of back and forth, and
then it basically it comes down tothe League Office, and then the athletic
directors come up with their recommendations andthey take it to the President's Council and
(50:52):
tell them why they want this, and then most likely the President's Council will
agree to it, and then that'swhat we do. A lot of input
from the coaches, but some I'mon. I'm actually chair of the Coaches
Committee, and I've been very thisis my first year doing it, and
I've been very pleased with my interactionswith Julie in the league. You know,
we've I've taken something to them thatthe coaches wanted taken to them on
(51:15):
non league scheduling, and they've beentremendous with it. And we'll see how
that goes down. But I'm verypleased with the way I've been treated and
how you know, my interactions withthe league office have been great. All
right, camp, As you lookat the bracket, it's all set up,
obviously, what's kind of some ofyour initial reactions? And I guess
my follow up question to that istomorrow, how do you consume the games
(51:37):
Tomorrow night? What do you dowell? Tomorrow night? I'm going to
consume our women's basketball game at OaklandUniversity, and I'm not going to worry
about that because ESPN plus I cango watch them demand, right, so
I can go watch the games. And I mean, I'll be looking at
my phone obviously, and you know, and when we're beating North Kentucky,
when we're beating Northern Kentucky by seventy, at some point tomorrow I'll probably be
(52:00):
watching a game on the on thephone. But my first thing is to
go to support our women tomorrow night. And then once we know who we're
playing, then you know, wewon't sleep a lot over the next week.
You know, we'll spend a lotof time. And my whole staff,
it's not just me, my wholestaff, you know, it's our
job. This is the most importantsix days, seven days that we'll have
(52:22):
and we've told our players to youknow, we've tried to get everything ready
for these days and we as astaff have to emulate that. No.
Absolutely, And did want to bringthat up as well. You know what
the women will be in tomorrow.Yeah, yes, I know you're proud
of yourself. I have camp.Yeah, I don't know where that word
came from, but it came outthere. You go tomorrow seven o'clock,
(52:44):
by the way, at the OakenUniversity Credit Union Arena, the Golden Grizzlies
in Northern Kentucky on the women's side. Same deal, win, win,
win, and that's that's the nameof the game here in March. And
Camp, I did want to askyou something about that too, because for
a long time, I know,I know that you've you've fought with that,
you've wrestled with that, just becauseat the mid major level, we
(53:06):
play a whole season and it comesdown to three games like that, that's
what it is, and they'll beone winner of the tournament. And I
know that you've kind of battled withthat for a very very long time.
Now you've been a little more accepting. I guess of that. Like,
no, I haven't battled with that. I've battled with the perception of it,
the fan base perception of it,and I've been shot down with that.
(53:29):
They're just ever you know. Andthe last time we won the Horizon
League, we won twenty five orsix games, we won an n IT
game, and people think it wasa bad year. That's what I battle
with. No matter what happens Thursday, Monday, or Tuesday, this has
been an unbelievable year. It hasbeen one of the most fun years I've
ever been associated with Weakland basketball.Any fan that's a true fan that can't
(53:52):
say that, then, you know, I feel bad for him, because,
yeah, as I said last week, nobody wants to win it more
than the fifteen guys that play formy back my team. That it's they're
the ones that are living it,and you know, and it's the biggest
part of it. But in life, you have disappointments, and the whole
(54:15):
season has been picking ourselves up fromdisappointments, right, And that's how you
win championship. You lose. Andas Blake said, here we go out
and we go bowling after one ofthe worst losses at Cleveland State and we
come back and we beat Youngstown andno one, no one thought that was
gonna happen. And that's what life'sabout, picking yourself up. And you
(54:36):
know what, if we don't doit, that's not gonna change what this
team did this year. Now we'regonna do it. I'm telling you we're
going to do it. I'm notguaranteeing it because coaches aren't supposed to do
stuff like that, but we're gonnado it. I just believe so much
in this group. I really do. I think we're built for it,
and I think mentally they're ready forit. And that's more. That's bigger
(54:57):
than talent and camp. Backing thatup. That was the takeaway from me
from this season. Like with thisteam, you know, as we work
through the regular season, no matterwhat happened, battles with Ohio State and
Illinois where you have the lead insidefive minutes to go win a couple of
big ten gyms that that manifested itselfin the Xavier game where you had been
through the battles before and you wereable to close that game out and get
(55:21):
that win. Whenever there's been achallenge they've answered it every single time this
season. That's why they're getting rings, you know. That's you're right,
and that's why I've got this cakein front of me and my name's on
it, but it really should havefifteen kids names on it, because they
are the ones that did it.Camp. I have to give you a
lot of credit too, because therewas a time before where that thing would
(55:43):
have maybe four finger finger for sure. I mean this thing right here in
front of me while you were talkingwith four times minimum, four times one
for each finger, yeah, fiveoh ten. I would have got the
left left on this side, righton that thing. But I haven't touched
it. I know it's pretty impressive, Camp, it is. I took
(56:05):
a picture of it, though.I'm gonna send it to my sister.
She loves cake. Who doesn't lovecake? Me? I'm not a cake
eater. Really. Oh, wehave we have argued that. Yeah,
we have arguments and fights over allthe time. Birthday. I want a
chocolate a Claire, you know, one of those things with that cream inside
and that chocolate on the outside.Yeah, and she wants cake, and
(56:27):
we've argued our whole lives over cake. Really. Yeah, So I've took
a picture. I'm sending it toher. Let's say, I ask her
if she's jealous that I got acake with my name on it? Yeah,
cake with your name on it?All right, Camp, we got
about three minutes left in the show. Hit me with it. Man,
What's what's going through your mind rightnow? You know? We got to
come out And I told them todayand I honestly mean this. I think
(56:51):
the Detroit game was just a perfectgame for us, just a perfect game.
Had to overcome adversity in a gameyou think you're gonna win, you
know, and the team played greatand we found a way to win it
down the stretch. You know.I just think if we'd have won that
game by thirty five, I thinkwe would run into a lot of trouble
on Thursday. And I think we'remore than ready. We've been through it,
(57:15):
we understand it. I've got guysthat have played in the championship game
and lost in Blake and Trey andChris, we're here. When we got
beat by Cleveland State in the championshipgame, I got guys that got beat
on the road in the first games, and we said all year long,
the most important thing is get ahome game. That's more important than anything,
get a home game. And theyaccomplished that. So now it's here
(57:37):
and it's time to go play andjust enjoy it. Man, Just enjoy
this and go out and the processof the whole thing. Don't let the
pressure get to you. There's goingto be pressure, and there's going to
be, you know, things thatgo bad, and when they go bad,
just remember how good you are andmake the next play. No.
And that's something too, I thinkthat we forget sometimes as well. You
(57:59):
show me a champion, showed mea national champion. I'll show you a
time along the road where they werein trouble. That UNLV team that beat
Duke by thirty. They almost losta ball state in the second round.
Right, nobody talks about every teamis in trouble at some point because at
the end of it, a playermade a play and they were able to
overcome something bad happening. Because myguess is Thursday night, somebody whoever we're
(58:21):
playing, is going to bank, win in or come out and make some
shots because they're not supposed we're numberone, they're not supposed to win.
They're not going to be they're gonnacome and everything will go in the basket
and we'll just have we'll handle itand go out, move on to the
next play and make the next playand everything will be fine. Well said,
well, because that's that's the formula, that's the way that it works.
What it shot. There are eightteams that win this thing, and
(58:42):
you will. You would not besurprised at all, right, No,
and I don't think anybody would.I think I think there are people that
think Fort Wayne's gonna win it.You know, I'm not talking Fort Wayne
fans. I think people out there, you know. I I saw today
ESPN put out their predictions of it, and they have four people that predict
and we weren't one of them. Not one of them predicted us, which
is just fine. It's the wayit was back in November too. All
(59:04):
I'm worried about is winning Thursday Night. I'm not worried about Tuesday. Got
to get to Tuesday before you worryabout it. Absolutely, as far as
the Greg Campy Show goes, whenwe win in Indianapolis, when we win,
we will be back here on Marcheighteenth, on Monday night. When
we win, we'll talk about goingto the NCAA tournament, and that's how
it's going to go down. Canythe only reason, the only reason we
wouldn't be here is if they putus on a Tuesday night. But I
(59:27):
don't see I really don't see thathappening. I think we're going to be
if we get in, we'll bea fourteen, you know, hopefully a
thirteen, but we could even bea fifteen, but somewhere between thirteen and
fifteen, So I don't think so. I think we'd be able to have
the show, all right, Sothere it is, everybody. We'll see
y'all Thursday night at the Oakland UniversityCredit Union Arena. Time for March Madness
(59:47):
for the coach, Greg Campy. My name is Neil Rold. Thanks for
listening to the Greg Campy Show.Big thanks to Greg Hudson as well.
We'll talk to you soon. Well, see you later.
