voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neil Rule. What's going on? Everybody? Welcome
back to a special edition of theGreg Campy Show. We're live at RJ's
Pub in Rochester Hills. Might havehis new role, of course, he
is a coach. Greg Campy.Camp Anything going on? Yeah? Personally,
(00:25):
I'm wish we were having another shownext week because I think we were
good enough to get there. Youknow, I think that that proved out
through this whole thing is as coolas what happened happened. You know,
we were fifteen seconds away from beingin the Sweet sixteen. And I also
think we found out that we weregood enough to get and play on.
(00:46):
I mean, as I said beforethe tournament, Somebody's when we were trying
to figure out who we were gonnaplay, I said, there were only
three teams that I was concerned about. I didn't want to play Perdue,
I didn't want to play Yukon,and I didn't want to play Houston.
And it worked out our bracket thatonly Houston was in that and we wouldn't
have seen them, you know,to this final Elite eight game and their
(01:06):
best player got hurt. So youknow, it really worked out where we
were in a position that we coulddo something, and we did. We
did something really special. But it'sI'm still wishing we could have had a
radio show next week, you know, no doubt about it. I mean,
yeah, absolutely, And that's athat's a hot topic too, like
an ask CAMPI And by the way, you can get involved to go on
X send us a They still callit a tweet on X. I don't
(01:30):
know what the protocol is on that. You know what I'm talking about.
I send a tweet with the hashtagask Campy. You can ask questions to
camp. We will get to those. Got some special guests in the house
here tonight, camp. Of course, we got Blake Lampman in the house
here tonight. We'll talk to Blakeabsolutely. Trey Townsend is here as well,
(01:53):
absolutely, and Jack Golkie. Yeah, so there you go, and
we'll talk to all hold on,hold on, just because they're the guys
getting all we'll see. I alsosee Chris Conway. Well, Chris is
in the house. All right,Chris Brew's in the house. What's going
on? Everybody with his new hairdoo, it's new. Okay, I'll take
(02:16):
that though, I'll take that. But Camp, I mean, just what
was it? What was it like? I know that that we've talked about
this for a minute privately, takeeverybody through that that twenty four to forty
eight hour process we get to winagainst Kentucky. What was it like for
you? Camp? Well, Ithink that you know, first of all,
(02:37):
I just want to talk about ourfan base. And obviously look around
this room, and we showed,we showed the nation what you know our
fan base is about. We bragit to our recruits all the time about
you know, the arena and howloud it is and how good you know,
our fan base is. But theworld got to see it in Pittsburgh.
(02:58):
It was just unbelievable out on thatcourt. And I'm sure the players
are going to tell you the samething. We walked out on that floor
and you've got Big Blue Nation, who was supposed to be the greatest fan
base in the country. And whilethere were a lot more of them,
you know, uh, they wewere so much louder and it's from a
from the floor. You really hearthat stuff. Our players here, when
(03:21):
you're on the floor and it's comingat you, they'll The noise that went
on, especially when DQ made theshot in the corner to you know,
kind of seal it. The noisethat came from that building was louder than
anything I'd ever heard. I onlyheard one other thing louder than that during
the whole week. And this isthe I was just tumb burnie back there
(03:44):
about it. I've never experienced thisin my life. And it wasn't our
fan base. They didn't care.It was Jack Golkie, I guess because
I already no one love him, right, but the rest of the people
in that building. Before the endor during the NC State game, you
know, Jack comes off the benchand with about three minutes into the game
we had fallen behind six to twoor something like that, and I didn't
wait till the time out. NormallyI wait till the first time out to
(04:06):
put him in, but I didn'twant to do that. He stood up
and started going to the scorers table, and you would have thought somebody made
a basket to win the championship.I mean, that crowd went crazy that
that football player looking guy had juststood up and was going down to check
in. I mean, I've neverheard anything like that in my life.
(04:26):
Of twenty thousand people going nuts overa guy checking in camp. You guys
were in the locker room and Jackkind of came he came out first to
get loose and everything like that. You'd have thought the Beatles walked out there.
I mean, everybody in the arenathey stopped what they were doing to
watch Jack stretch like it was.It was wild. There's some weird people
in this world. There are. There are, absolutely, yeah, no,
(04:48):
absolutely there are no But we'll talkto Jack coming up in just a
little bit. But anyways, goingback to us saying our fan base was
just in the amount of people. You know, we had a tremendous crowd
for Kentucky, but the amount ofpeople that just got in their car and
drove to Pittsburgh for the game Saturday, out of this world. And if
you if you don't understand how muchthat means to our players and to us.
(05:11):
It was just crazy and I justwant to thank everybody. And it
wore a Grizzly shirt and I hada buddy of mine that was in the
Caribbean on vacation watching the games, and he's his son's one of our managers,
and he texted me, he goeseverywhere. I wore my Grizzly shirt
and everywhere I went people were screamingat me. Go Grizzlies, Go Grizzlies,
(05:32):
you know. And I think theday before the Kentucky game, if
he was walking through with that shirton, people would have gone, where
what's that? You know? Andnow everybody for everybody knew. And I
told our team, you know,we have we got the perfect draw.
This is a chance to change yourlives. And I think they all know
their lives were drastically changed. No, no doubt, no doubt about it.
(05:55):
And you know, as I askedthe question in the postgame presser,
arguably the greatest moment in Oakland Universityhistory was that night. I mean,
it just was. And the impactthat it had from coast to coast and
what it did for visibility the universityand all that stuff. Camp I mean,
it was. It was a specialmoment. I don't know how much
to describe it. Yeah, andit's it's not arguably, I mean it
(06:17):
is. There's no question about ityou never know who's in the room.
Yeah, I don't know. Yeah. I mean as a coach, you
know, I get asked all thetime when you've coach in one place as
long as I have, who's yourbest player, who's the greatest team?
And you never want to say anything. You just you know, you want
to give each player and each teamthere due. But in this case,
there's just the the title wave thathas hit our program in this community and
(06:43):
all the stories that I've heard aboutthe watch parties and you know, all
in Detroit, and it just wasn'tRochester and Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills.
It was the whole you know, three one, three, two, four,
eight, five eights, the wholearea, every bar, every place.
I got friends that were all overthe country were saying people were just
(07:04):
packed in bars because you beat theDallas Cowboys of college basketball, you drink
the villains, you know, andthe whole world was when VQ shot went
in every bar in this country exceptthe ones in Lexington, Kentucky were doing
and I do know the ones inLouisville they were going. They went crazy
with their wallet too. You absolutelyI love that stuff. Then, well,
(07:27):
Giz told me a story that hewas you know, we had Tennessee
here for the the we were hostingthe nca tournament this weekend, and all
the Tennessee fans were telling him that, you think the people in Louisville like
you. The whole state of Kentucky'son your side, you know, because
I mean the whole state of Tennesseeis on your side, because they it's
not just Louisville, right, Andyeah, it's it's just crazy what that
(07:51):
win meant to this whole country andthe status that we have. And I
don't know if it'll be fifteen minutesof fame, but I know one thing
for the next you know, theonly thing that I can compare it to
is when Bryce Drew for Valpo inthe nineties made that shot, right,
and it's still You watch any NCAA, you know, tournament highlight or you
(08:16):
know a commercial that the NCAA,you see that Bryce Drew shot, And
I'm gonna tell you, I thinkfor the next twenty years, you're gonna
hear Jack Golkie say we're not We'renot a Cinderella. Yeah, you know,
I really do. Absolutely. Youknow what else Camp likes as the
numbers start to come into it,and you were talking about reactions and stuff
(08:37):
like that. I guess they putthe score on the scoreboard at LCA during
the Red Wings game and the crowdjust erupted. At Little Caesars Arena,
they've showed the last couple of minutesof the game while the hockey games being
played on the scoreboard, they hadour game. They showed the Kentucky game.
Yeah, and the numbers continue tocome in Camp. I'm sure.
I think I sent this to you. As a matter of fact, Oakland
(08:58):
versus Kentucky was the highest rated NCARound of sixty four game since Zion Williamson
played at Duke. I mean fourmillion viewers, No, the final the
final numbers were the It averaged sixpoint three million, and I think it
peaked at like eight point two million. People went down to it right right,
which is the as you said, the highest rated round the sixty four
(09:20):
game since Zion Williams and Oakland UniversityCamp. It's at the forefront of the
life. It is this still isthis real to you? Yet? It's
been hard for me because the wayit ended, and you know the problem
for me, and I don't wantto get too sentimental because five of those
guys are here right now, andI really don't want them to know.
How I truly feel is that Ididn't get to coach him anymore. You
(09:45):
know that that was the saddest partfor me, because there wasn't a day
this year. And I don't knowif I could ever say this in my
coaching career. There wasn't a daythis year I didn't want to go into
that gym. There wasn't a practiceI didn't want to go into. And
when you have the leadership of Lampmanand Townsend and and you know, the
(10:05):
unselfishness of a rocket Watts and theyou know, we've got a couple of
kids that have gone into portal, and they should go into portal because now's
the time to worry about themselves andthat. But there was never a point
this year that there was a singleplayer that put themselves above the team.
Trey never put him and Trey hada lot to play for this year.
(10:28):
He never put himself above the team. Blake never put himself, Chris Connway
never, no Bruke. You know, he came here with this great you
know he's going to be this andthen he missed three months and it set
him back. And he never complained, He never bitch. They just loved
each other. And from a coachingstandpoint, I think Smitty and Bobby and
Cubb will tell you the same thing. We just relished going into that building
(10:52):
every day and think about your joband what you do in life and when
you worked. If you don't anymore, there had to be days you didn't
want to go to work. Imean, there just had to be.
That's life, that's human. Inever had that. Right from the time
we started in June until the timeit ended, I never had that.
(11:13):
And that's one of the reasons it'sbeen so hard for me because this.
I mean, I had coaches jealous, and you can't if I showed you
the texts I got from coaches inthat about that group of kids you had,
and you could just see it.You could see it on your face,
Campy, you could see it howthey the kids handled adversity during games.
(11:35):
I mean, I've said this abunch of radio shows, and I
want to say it to the peoplehere, and I don't care if everybody
in Kentucky is listening. We werethe better team. We were the better
team. It wasn't. It wasn'ta ten game, you know, a
(11:56):
best of seven or a best offour, and maybe if it was,
maybe that wouldn't have happened. Buton that night and Kentucky played good.
I know their fans are mad,and go watch the last five minutes of
that game. Watch the last fiveminutes of that game. Watch Kentucky.
They made a couple heirs. Theyturned it over twice. We went to
(12:18):
boxing one and they didn't realize it, and Shepherd threw it away and then
Trey cut through a passing Liane ata very very important time. But he
did that all year, and ourdefense will do that to teams. But
other than that, they were flawlessdown the stretches. They were down,
you know, and Rocket made Rocketmade some tough decisions in his life.
(12:39):
With the decision he made it notshoot a crappy shot and throw it to
DQ in the corners the best decisionin his life, you know, And
and DQ buried it. I mean, we played, we played an unbelievable
game that a team like Oakland shouldn'tdo down the stretch. You know,
(13:00):
you're supposed to fold to the pressureof that, You're supposed to when a
team that's, you know, pickedto win the national championship by a lot
of people is played that good. You're supposed to fold and we never folded.
And when this is all over, and the sting of losing in overtime
and not getting a shot and watchingNorth Carolina State go to the Final four,
and thinking it could have been us, when the sting of that is
(13:20):
gone, we're going to look backat that Kentucky game and I hadn't watched
I watched it two nights ago forthe first time, and my juices got
flown. I'm going to tell you, because that we were We played unbelievable
basketball. But the maturity and theability to overcome adversity that our kids showed
(13:45):
is because of who they are.You know, we've bragged about our kids
all year. We bragged about theirthree point four in the classroom, that
they're you know, whenever I saycome to the radio show, they come,
let's go to serve food to thehomeless, They come and happy about
it. Can we do this, yeah, coach, let's go do this.
That's what this kid, these kidswere, Yeah, and that's why
(14:07):
they were able to handle adversity becauseof who they are as people. I
mean, it's it's it would havebeen easy to fold and everybody would have
been able to say, oh,you played Kentucky. They're so good and
you played them so tough. Ifthis there was gonna be no ifs.
We were going to win the game, and they did. And I will
forever be grateful to this team becausethey took me on a hell of a
(14:30):
ride. No, absolutely, Camp, And that's something you know, when
I've done these interviews and talked aboutit, that's the message that I try
to drive is we all rebound atKentucky. Right, we shot more free
throws, we out offensive rebound,We led for twenty eight minutes. We
were the better team. Go backto that. We shot more free throws.
At one point it was twelve tofour, right the foul. So
I thought there might have been afew people there that thought Kentucky should win,
(14:52):
and a few of them might havehad some stripes on too, you
know, or maybe maybe not.Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're certainly
not a cue. We're just saying, you know, absolutely, it was
just a feeling. Right, allright, Camp, let's do this.
We're gonna take our first break whenwe come back I'm gonna be joined by
Blake Clamtman. I'm gonna be joinedby Trey Towns. I'm gonna be joined
by Jack Goldkie. Also to getyour questions, and we got questions flying
(15:13):
in with the hashtag ask Campy. There's a ton to get, So when
we come back, we'll talk toBlake Clamtman and get things rolling. Here.

(17:34):
at RJ's Pub in Rochester Hills. My name is Neil Ruled, the voice
of the Golden Grizzlies. Has alwaysa great Campy show brought to you by
Henry Ford Health. And right now, as promised, we are joined by
Blake Lampman. Everybody here live atRJ's Pub in Rochester Hills and Blake,
Hey man, anything been going onat all? Nothing much, man,
(17:56):
It's been hanging out, you knowthe same. Absolutely, what do you
say about. Take us through it, Blake, Take us through being out
there on the floor. Take usthrough and look, you guys always believed
that that that was gonna go downthat way. Every single one of you,
to a man, believed that. But take us through from that four
minutes in when it was all goingdown. What was going through everybody's mind?
(18:18):
Yeah, I think we were preparedfor the moment. Our non conference
schedule was so elite. Camp Hedoes this every year and everybody asks,
you know, why do you wantto start your season? Oh? To
nine is for when you get inmoments like that. And I think the
coolest thing for me was the daybefore we were talking in the locker room.
We had like a media day,and me and some of the guys
(18:40):
were talking about some of the Kentuckyplayers how they shoot fifty from three all
this, and Golkie looked at usand he's like, like, so do
I look at the last thirteen games, I'm forty six percent? What are
we talking about? And then hewent out and he did, you know,
the unbelievable and so just the confidencethat the guys had even the day
(19:00):
before the game, let alone whenwe walked out on the court, I
think that just speaks to what wewere about all season. Absolutely. I
mean, but Blake, you knowthis happens right, And we got guys
like James Honeycut I call him likethe artist to the stars here in Detroit.
He's up there. He's got theBlake Lampman caricature drawing for you.
You know, I saw you overthere meeting James and stuff like that.
(19:22):
Is this has this sunk in?Like? Is this still wild to you
or what to be honest, I'mjust sad that we're not practicing anymore.
Like Jack said, you know,it's just it was such a great year.
You know, you don't understand wehad I had fourteen fifteen best friends
that I had to see and theyhad to see me at ten am every
morning, right, and now thatthat's over, it's like, you know,
(19:45):
I'm waking up at nine o'clock, like, you know, okay Jack.
Jack sent us a text after probablytwo days later, He's like,
anybody anybody trying to practice tomorrow?Like, and I think Trey was like,
and then I would do a smittydefensive drill right now, boys,
who's in? That's how that's howhard up you guys are. Literally though,
Like it was just it was sucha it was such a joy.
(20:07):
And uh, you know, myfirst four years I've had some great teammates,
but the guys that I that Igot to be with this year,
man, they're my brother's for lifefor sure, my coaching staff, my
family. So like I said,I'm just I'm sad it's over. But
it hasn't really sunk in that itis, you know, yeah, well
and knowing you too, like andI try to paint this picture. And
(20:29):
I've talked about this publicly, We'vetalked about it privately before, for you
to get out on the floor becausepeople don't realize how close you were to
not playing this year like that. But that was a fifty to fifty decision
for a very very long time. The extra work that I saw you put
in that, you know, beyondpractice, beyond weights, beyond all that
stuff, the stuff you had todo personally to get out there on the
(20:49):
floor. You went through it,man, I mean, you absolutely went
through it. But I know whatyou're gonna say, so those guys,
man, Yeah, well, Imean I think everybody goes through it.
You know when you have a seasonwhere we played, you know, we
played four extra games that I haven'tplayed in three years, you know,
since I've been here. So Ithink everybody had had some bruises and had
(21:11):
to kind of grind it out.But that's that's the cool thing about college
basketball. That's a cool thing aboutMarch. You know, you play a
game, you get one day torecover, and I think I think everybody
was kind of in a shock withhow much attention we got. I don't
know how you know, Goki cameout and he hit his first three year
first three threes in the second game. I don't even know how he got
(21:32):
a minute of sleep on Friday nightor whatever, you know, Thursday night.
His his phone was probably crazy. That's a great I'll ask him that
when he comes up here. Well, that's sounds like a great question.
I could do it, But Ithink I think everybody a part of Oakland
University, like my family can attestto it too. Like there people from
back home are hitting them up.People that I haven't talked to in five
years that I never thought i'd talkto ever again and are texting me.
(21:53):
So it's it's crazy. It wasan unreal experience, and I think,
uh, I think everybody's gonna havekind of the same testament that was a
part of Oakland University this year.I got two more for you before we
let you go. I got onequestion. I got one one statement that
I want to get your thoughts on. First off, the question, Blake,
you guys will go down in OaklandUniversity history, obviously Oakland basketball history,
(22:17):
but Oakland University history for what youdid in the NCAA Tournament. What's
that mean to you? That meanseverything, man, Oakland University's this this
is my home. This is everythingto me. And I've been I've been
telling. I told Xavier Banks anda couple of younger guys Cooper Craigs,
I'm like, you guys have theopportunity to be the most winningest player in
Oakland history. Like, you guysgot to keep this going. I want
(22:38):
to I want to come back andyou know, a couple of years and
watch you guys be beaten beating thebrakes off of Detroit Mercy and stuff like
that, so that that never goesaway. Yeah. But but yeah,
like I said earlier, it meansthe world to me. I mean,
I gave you know, this isthis is the last five years. It's
been absolutely everything to me, andit's my life. It's my home.
So I truly love this university. And then the last thing, Blake,
(23:02):
I actually I called you when wegot back, you know, from Oakland,
after the bus got back in town, and I'm gonna share what I
talk to you about. Blake Lampmangave his guts to this program, literally
everything he had to be out thereon the floor. When I think of
Oakland basketball, I will think ofBlake Lamtman, because he paid the ultimate
(23:23):
price to be out there on thefloor, and I just want to thank
you for that public Blake Lampman, everybody, thank you, absolutely absolutely no,
don't worries man. Next. Iguess Jack's up here next, So
welcome to the stage, everybody,Mister Jack Golkie. Absolutely. Hey,
(23:48):
you're Jack Golkie, right. Hey, I'm Neil Rule. I used to
call your games when you played incollege basketball. Do you remember me,
Jack? I remember everybody? Everybodyhere. I guess we'll start. We'll
get right into it with you.The game's over. I remember we're in
the hotel eating. What was thenext forty eight hours like for you?
(24:15):
I still don't really kind of believelike everything that's happened, but I mean
Blake kind of touched on it.I think between Thursday night after the game,
Friday night before the game against NCState, and then Saturday night after
the NC State came, I thinkI got less than nine ten hours of
sleep those three days. So itwas just a whirlwind, like I was
(24:37):
trying to sleep as just the adrenalinewas pumped up for seventy two hours.
It was all crazy, but atremendous experience to be out there with my
guys and my coaches on that typeof stage. I mean, that's what
you dream of. Yeah, andwe'll get into that. But postgame,
you you came on the air withme right after it was over. You
put the headset on and your firstwords to me were, what I tell
(24:57):
you, Neil, and you wereyou were telling anybody that anybody that would
listen you you knew this, likeyou foresaw this. You knew how this
was gonna go down. Yeah.I don't know what it is, but
my whole basketball career, like,I've always kind of been an underdog,
and this year we were kind ofan underdog as going into the tournament.
But I just I hate when peoplecall me an underdog, when people tell
(25:19):
me I'm creating an upset or whateverit is, just because I think we
went out there and we knew wewere the better team. Like obviously they
got higher recruits and everything like that, but the amount of time we put
in with each other, we werejust so confident in each other's abilities and
in the you know, in theprocess that we had gone through with our
coaches the whole season, we knewKentucky had great players, but we didn't
(25:42):
think that they prepared the same waywe did. So that's why we were
so confident. We just had Wehad that preparation and that that build up
throughout the whole season. Talking withJack gold Gear and the Greg Campy Show,
we're live at r J's Pub inRochester Hills, home of the Greg
Campy Show. Uh, Jack,I have to ask you this one because
a lot of people have asked meto, so I'll ask you it.
Who's the coolest person that reached outto you? The JJ Watt video was
(26:06):
really cool. Being au Pewaukee kidmyself, I've like Madam once or twice,
but to have him send that acrossthe internet was really sweet for sure.
Yeah, no doubt about that. You know too, with Kentucky and
Blake had talked about it. Youtalked about it with what they were and
they're gonna be three maybe four lotterypicks on that team. But the way
(26:32):
that you guys and what camp wastalking about, you guys closed that out
on them. Like you had thelead, you were winning twenty eight minutes
of the game. You guys closethat out. And then when you came
out and I'm curious to hear fromthe people when you jumped on CBS and
you're done talking, you're like,oh, we're not a Cinderella. What.
(26:52):
Yeah, That's what I'm saying,Like, yeah, man, Like
what led to that? First off, I got a credit my guys for
close that game out because I don'tthink I scored for the last like eight
minutes or something, so shout outto them for that. But I don't
know. I mean, in theinterview after the game, CAMPI and I
were kind of just we're kind ofjust loving on each other over there,
like just enjoying the moment, youknow, and that was just that was
(27:17):
a ton of fun. And whenwe were about to go out, I
was just I still felt like wewere being considered the underdog. I mean,
I understand that's how it's gonna be, but I just I wanted everyone
across the country, I guess,to know that that we were confident going
into it, like this wasn't asurprise for us. And I wanted people
to know that because I think it'simportant to have that confidence and to have
(27:37):
that belief in yourself, because ifyou don't, I don't think we would
have got that result last one foryou here, Jack, So what's next
for you? Man? What doyou got going on? I know you're
out to Phoenix for the Final four. I know you're hanging out with Barstool,
you know. I know you're doingall these kinds of things. What's
next for you? I just signedan agent and I'm gonna be going down
to Dallas after the school year's overto train and try to get ready for
(27:59):
some potential summer opportunities in like theSummer League and things like that. And
I just pursue a professional career tothe best of my abilities because I don't
want to give up the game. It's given me so much so far,
so many great relationships, so manygreat moments, and I think I can
create a couple more in the future. Absolutely, absolutely there it is.
Everybody give it up for Jack Golky, everyone creciative man. Absolutely cool.
(28:26):
Thank thank you very much for thetime, Jack. And right now,
uh, we're gonna talk to misterOakland. That is right, everybody.
Trey Towentsend making his way up hereand uh here at the Greg Campy Show
live at Our J's Pub in RochesterHills. And yeah, Trey, just
can I get that microphone as closeto your close to your mouth there as
you can. Gotcha, there yougo. Absolutely absolutely Trey Neil and anything
(28:52):
happening lately at all, man, just enjoying the moment, you know,
watching Jack social media blow up andwatch him do all these ads and commercials
behind the scenes. It's that's beenpretty entertaining. I forgot to ask Jack,
wh what should I do if Ihave tax problems? Wh Who should
I talk to? Oh? TurboTax? Okay, yeah, I think
I will no. But tray fromyour perspective, the last four minutes of
(29:15):
that game, it was like areal life Rocky movie though. I mean,
you had Kentucky playing at a highlevel. You guys certainly were playing
at a high level. Just whatdid you feel that way too? I
mean, just blows being landed oneach other. Was it like a heavyweight
fight? And one hundred percent was. And I got to give a lot
of credit, like Camp said,to our fan base that traveled out there
to help with with their punches andhad given us momentum on the way back.
(29:37):
But you could also feel in thatarena the game that was after us,
all the fans felt like they werepulling for us as well, because
nobody else wanted to see Kentucky inthat game. So every time we did
something good, it was like thecraziest rust of adrenaline. So no matter
what punch they threw, we knewwe were gonna come down and everyone's gonna
be on our side and we weregonna pull it out. What was what
is that like for you? Imean, I guess you kind of answered
(29:59):
the question. But when you haveall Texas Tech fans and all NC State
fans and they all become Oakland fanstogether and it's three quarters of the arena
against Kentucky, And somebody told meone time, when Kentucky loses, America
wins, and so like, didyou feel like you were kind of playing
for America there? I guess, because like the whole arena, well three
quarters of it were all Oakland fans. Yeah. Like I said, it's
(30:21):
in the end of those games. You know, it's a physical battle for
forty minutes and you're tired at theend, but any boost of adrenaline you
can get is amazing. And likeyou said, no matter what we did,
if we got to steal a deflectionof a made basket, every single
person that was wearing red, blackand gold was cheering for us. If
they weren't in blue, they werecheiring for us. So it was amazing
to see and it definitely helped usplot of win. Well, who was
the coolest person that reached out toyou, Trey, Because I know you're
(30:45):
making some national headlines there the storywith your parents. Obviously I kind of
went viral a little bit as well. Who'd you hear from? I still
think the coolest thing for me,I told Griffiths at the selection Sunday show,
the coolest person that I reached outwas Travis Bator finally followed me back
on Instagram, so that was allbig. That was a great moment for
me as as an Oakland kid growingup. So that was I think the
most special person that's re stout. For sure, you're gonna run for mayor
(31:07):
here after the playing career is over. I think I'm a little too quiet
and shy for all that. Sothat's all good. So I think I'll
stick to basketball. But I thinkyou could could he win for mayor if
he ran to win. I'm justsaying, think about it. Trade that
that's all. I'll keep it inthe back pocket. I asked Blake this
for you because obviously we know whata special place Oakland is to you.
(31:30):
To go down as being affiliated withthe greatest moment in Oakland history probably hits
a little a little more for youeven, doesn't it. Yeah, one
hundred percent. As I've been sayingthese past couple of weeks, you know,
my dream was just to be apart of this program in any way,
shape or form. You know,I didn't care what, you know,
what we accomplished. I just wantedto be in an Oakland uniform and
play for Campy and you know,be a part of this university. And
(31:51):
you know, I've seen a lotof special Oakland moments growing up. I
went to there two tournament games whenI was younger and been a part of
so many special moments. And tothink that this group of guys, you
know, people closest with the restof my life, accomplished what we did
this year and left our mark inthis university. Like I've been saying,
I couldn't have scripted any better orasked for anything different. It's just such
a magical thing. By the way, tres so big Time now pro Sport
(32:12):
Zone this Sunday as a matter offact, you and Jack Olkeavin autograph signing
out there, I'm told, soyou'll have that going on as well.
Thank you, Trey, Thank thanksto this whole team. Man. I
mean, what you guys did forthis community, what you guys did for
this region college basketball. You know, we were talking about it earlier that
the highest viewed games since Ion Williamsonwas playing college basketball. Has it set
(32:35):
into you It's still honestly hasn't becauseI'm still you know, Mars Madison is
still going on, so it's kindof hard to you know, hear all
the stuff going on with that, knowing how close we were. But you
know, I just want to sayhow much I appreciate this fan base and
how how many people traveled out therebecause I knew, you know, everyone
that comes with these shows and thepeople that I've gotten to know really well
over the past few years, Iknew they were going to be there.
(32:57):
But seeing all the new faces andyou know, all the new Oakland fans
feel that we've you know, inspiredand wanted to cheer for this school,
come to the school and be thenext to me here, It's it's something
such a special thing. So I'mgrateful for everything that's happened. Absolutely well.
Appreciate your time as always, myfriend, thank you for coming by.

up building here at RJ's Pub.Certainly do appreciate everybody coming. Oh yes,
sir, how about rjs Pub gettingplay on national primetime CBS talking about
our J's pile and the season friesand the season fries can and how cheap
(36:06):
r J is. By the way, you'll notice they brought out the season
fries for the Yeah, I meaneverybody they didn't want that raft. Now
you know that that's a heady playby Russ. That's how he's a smart
man. Absolutely, you're ready foryou ready for some ask Campy, we
got a ton to get to.Uh why not? Why not just keep
(36:27):
up the tradition Pittsburgh, Marty chimingin, so grateful for you for the
foremost unforgettable days ever. The entirestaff treated me like family. Uh,
your players are gentlemen. In thewords of coach Normandale from Hoosiers, I
love you guys. Moving forward, what does May June July look like for
the program, Well, you know, we we'll report our team reports at
the end of June and we'll knowwhat our roster is by then. Right
(36:50):
now, we're roster building and anduh, roster saving maybe a little bit
too. You know, we're doingit all. We're trying to figure out
who's who's gonna be there and who'sgoing to replace people are leaving, and
you know, we have like I'msure the true fans know, we had
a couple of guys going to portaland it's all love. I mean,
we're trying to help everybody, puteverybody in a position where they can have
(37:14):
a chance to play there. InOsay Price's case, his senior year,
where you know, he's not aguy off the bench, he's at a
school where he's going to be thefirst line guy where he can be,
you know, the man at aschool and he should be that. And
so we're doing everything we can tohelp those guys. We're out there recruiting.
My staff has been you know,Smitty and his normal working twenty five
(37:35):
hours a day, Bobby's twenty fivehour. I mean, you know that
Cove. They're all working their tailsoff to we want to keep this thing
going. You know, we've beenhere before, not it. We didn't
win in the then state tournament, but if you remember, we took a
Texas team that was one of thebest teams in the country to the wire
and lost. This time, wewon and got the extra games. So
we've been there before and we stumbled, and we don't want to stumble now.
(37:58):
We want to keep it going. And it's easy to do when I
got a staff like I've got.You know, I'm getting a lot of
play nationally right now. But youknow the truth of the matter is my
staff is just unbelievable, and it'sit's just done a phenomenal job there.
They're they're really the reason these kidsare here. Austin Davis and I'm curious
to get the answer to this onetoo. How does it feel watching NC
(38:20):
State continue the run to the finalfour? What does it make you think
of? Well, Austin, totell you the truth, it's it's a
double edged sword because I want themto win, and I hate that they're
winning, you know, want Iwant them to win. I want them,
I want them to win the nationalchampionship, but I hate the fact
that they are, you know,I hate the fact that they're playing.
And and it's I think Trey andBlake and they all, you know,
(38:44):
they're they know it's over, andso they're basking in that. And and
but if you deep inside of themtoo, they know too. And we
played at a high level, andwe were playing at a high level.
Could we continue that high level throughanother two weekends? I really believe we
can because of the momentum of ridingthe wave right and as good as we
(39:07):
were playing, it wasn't a fluke. We weren't, you know. I
mean, Golkie was still ten fortwenty. It wasn't like he was ten
for ten, you know, Imean there was and he could go ten
for ten. So it wasn't likewe couldn't give more. And so it's
hard mister Drew Hoff on Twitter.Ask Campy Diehard fans, it's my freshman
year back in twenty fifteen. Thankyou to your staff and your team for
(39:27):
the best two weeks of my sportslife. What can fans in the university
do to help capitalize on the team'srecent success in terms of recruitment, game
day experience, et cetera. Well, I think that our game day experience.
And I don't know what fans are, but from what I've heard is
is, you know, get Ilove Giz and Steve and those guys.
Now everybody, they just do atremendous job. And whenever we bring a
(39:50):
recruit in, all they talk aboutafter the game is wow, what you
know the game itself. Now,we don't show them our facilities and because
they wouldn't be saying wow then, but you know, we're we're working.
There's questions a little bit later onabout that. You know, the practice
facility is we're working on that. We're you know, we're hoping to be
in that in the year and andso we're working towards that. But honestly,
(40:14):
and then nobody wants to hear thistoday, but the biggest thing we
can do is if you're going toinvest invest in the in the collective,
the collective right, because it's theway it is. And you know,
I don't want, never do Iwant my players to be making a ridiculous
amount because I just don't believe inthat. I don't believe they're helping them
(40:35):
because even even if a guy makeslet's say, somebody gets two hundred thousand
dollars, well, they don't understandat that age taxes and it's not two
hundred thousand dollars. That might beone hundred and twenty. And then they
buy a car and they buy this, and then it's gone, right,
and it's not sustainable. So youknow, I want them to receive a
piece of the pie, for sure. And that's what the collective is gonna
do. It's never gonna be ridiculousat our place, though, I'd like
(40:59):
if I could get to a positionwhere every one of our players is making
you know, ten thousand or somethinglike that. To me, that's sustainable
and that's and if they don't wantthat, don't want to be here,
then fine, go somewhere else, right, absolutely, Oh, I did
want to bring up two We weretalking about Trey and Jack they're making the
rounds. They'll be sounding the hornat the Red Wings game on April ninth.
So if you're going out to theRed Wings game, Trey and Jack
(41:21):
will be sounding the goal horn thereat LCA. That's concerning if we score
right. Well, no, theydo that before the game. I do
it at least once. Okay, good, they beat Tampa last night.
They're back in the Knicks game.Let's go. They're back in the mix.
Camp. You and Trey will bethrowing out the first pitch at the
Tigers game on April thirteenth at chAmerica Park. Yeah, I'm I'm having
(41:44):
nightmares about hearing Bob Bucker say justa bit outside. It's a lot of
pressure, camp. It's certainly alot of pressure. I'm not winding up,
I'll tell you that. And GrizzlyFan wants to know with the six
US this year, can we lookforward to more funding going into game day
experience all that, you know, kind of the same thing. Yeah,
(42:04):
I mean sure, we do alot on that. I mean, I
I think our game day is great. You know, we've just got to
behind the scenes stuff is what hasto get fixed. Absolutely, Jack will
be out there to throwing out thefirst pick I was gonna I thought he
was. But maybe now that he'ssuch a big shot, I mean,
maybe maybe the guy's making more moneythan I am right now. I mean,
(42:25):
we beat Kentucky and I've gotten alot of Ada boys and a lot
of uh, you know, radioshows and everything, and his bank account
has gone like this. I mean, my god, Well, if you're
having tax trouble camp Turbo tax,I was told Jack to talk to Jack.
I'm not having any trouble. Trust. Grizzly fan also wanted to know
(42:46):
can we get can we get custommade to order Oakland Nike jerseys? Now
potentially with the new spotlight, isNike's gonna be sending a semi to Oakland
now like they do with Kentucky. So I'm you know, I'm I've been
asked by our league office to nowthat you've experienced this, what could we
do better as a league? AndI think our department's going to do the
same thing. I think our departmentknocked it out of the you know,
(43:07):
I think they knocked it out ofthe park. But the one thing that
everybody was angry about, and Iactually had people coming up to me in
Pittsburgh that weren't Oakland people, andthey're like, they're kind of mad.
And remember how I was going tobe a ticket salesman and you know,
I was booking flights and doing allthat kind of stuff. They wanted the
(43:28):
Oakland Energy shirt, and I guessall the other schools were selling the Oakland
Energy shirt, and you know, they couldn't get that, and they I
think they wanted me to take theone on I had on and give it
to them. But you know, those types of things. Now that we've
experienced it being able to have uniform, you know, I think we should
have a trade townsend Jersey and heshould get the benefits from it. You
(43:49):
know, if you sell it fortwenty five bucks, give him ten,
give Oakland ten, and you know, give Nike five. And we need
to do that for sure. AndI think now that we're there and we've
seen what we've created, it's ourjob to make sure those things happen.
And now you have the Jews topull it off exactly right exactly m D.
Fund, who's in the house usuallyevery single week. As a matter
(44:12):
of fact, Camp ask Camp, you talk about next year the players will
have the places we're going to playet cetera. Well, right now we
have no guarantee games. We haveMichigan State at Little Caesars, but usually
by now, you know, we'reclose to getting guarantee games. Right now,
we're not going to get any andfor a while until they see what
our roster is, because what wedid, nobody's gonna play us, right
(44:36):
And I text, I text Holpemantoday, who's was the coach at Ohio
State when we played Ohio State. He's now the head coach at the Paul
and I just I said to him, Hey, Chris, I need money.
I need a guarantee game. Wouldyou know we're losing our whole team.
We're not gonna you know, mywhole team's in the port. I
(44:57):
mean I painted this, you know, pick sure of us? And he
wrote back, why the hell wouldI want to go against that zone again?
And that was the answer. Thatwas just the answer. So the
other side of that is we werewe were trying to be in Kentucky's mt
The Empty is the three team tournamentthat we played one in every year.
(45:20):
This year we were in the CaymanIslands. Kentucky has one next year and
there's a lot of money involved inand we were very close to signing that
and it was just I was goingto talk to Cal about it, and
uh, the guy that's running thetournament text me the night of the Kentucky
after the Kentucky game with so,where would you like to go for your
MTE next year? Because this oneain't happening. So, you know,
(45:44):
I, I really I have noclue who we're going to play right now.
We have Michigan, we have MichiganState in the Little Caesars. That's
the only and we're at Toledo andwe have Eastern Michigan at home. Those
are the only three non league gameswe have short season next year. I
can't could be wes le V says, and we kind of answered it about
(46:07):
we have a hard time getting Powerfive games next season. I think we
just gave the answer to that one. It just depends on what our roster
is looking forwards, name, imageand likeness, money the single most important
thing for recruiting and retaining this offseason. How do we compete in this new
environment? The answers Yes, Theanswer is we're trying to figure it out.
You know, we're really on topof that. Smitty is really.
(46:30):
I mean, he's our expert onthe staff on it, and he's working
real hard. We're trying to figureout what people are, you know,
what they're worth, and it's crazy, but it's it's what it is,
and we're going to We love thisjust like you love it. You know,
this has been an unbelievable couple weeks. We want to do this every
year and to do that, weneed players, right We got to have
(46:50):
good players. And I'm sure nopower fives are listening right now, but
we're gonna have really good players nextyear. I'm telling them we're not.
But you know, we got Conwayback, we got Buru, got DQ,
We've got and we've got some guysin there. So Gary mccarech doesn't
have a question, just a statement, he says, coach, thank you
for such a memorable season. Weappreciate you and all you do for Oakland
(47:13):
University. So it's just a statement. He texts that just as I wrote
it in voice to text. Ilike, I love that one. Tril
Gunderson. Does all this success meanwe can get a fast track on the
new practice facility? No, becausethey're fast tracking it now. I'm telling
you, Aura has been just achampion on this. She wants this,
(47:35):
and Steve and Aura and Steve macnee, I've been out of this world on
this. We're hoping to be inthe actual playing facility next year. The
goal is that week that the arenashuts down before the Michigan State game,
when we can't practice and we haveto find places to practice, that that
week the practice facility will open forpractice. And then when the season ends
(48:00):
in the spring, we'll be ableto get into the locker rooms and the
offices and we'll move everything into itin the spring next year. And I've
been told, you know, rightnow we're on track to that. We're
I will say this publicly, I'llprobably get in trouble for it is we're
probably a million dollars short, youknow, of having everything we want,
and so we're out there trying toraise another million dollars so that we can
(48:22):
have everything we want. So ifanybody wants to have the the uh Neil
Rule basketball court or the Neil Rulelocker room or whatever like that, you
know, a couple hundred thousand bucks, we get five people to do it,
we'll have the greatest practice facility inthe league. I endorse that if
somebody wants to do that, I'lllend my name to it cam free free
(48:43):
of charge. I absolutely will, free of charge. Gary also, Gary
also asked for the NC State game. I was parking my car at the
marry up before the game and theparking tenant saw my Griz hat and want
to know how to get one,and I'll need to carry more gear next
year to give it away. SoI guess he gave him the Olinn hat
the parking attendant there, so hegot some new fans in Oakland as well.
I took a dozen hats there andgave him all the way too.
(49:07):
Jimmy Kennedy, big shout out toto Jimmy Kennedy too back in our twelve
seventy AM studios all season long.Greg Hessen on the show here tonight as
well. Jimmy wants to know howis a magical NCAA tournament run changed you
and how Oakland handled recruiting, andif so, how I don't think it's
changed how we handle recruiting. That'schanged. Who's talking to us? You
know, every six foot five Ican't say that every six foot five shooter
(49:35):
out there wants to come to Oaklandright now. But you know what their
first question is, Their first question, how much money is Golkie? Were
you paying Golky? Right? Howmuch money were you paying Lampman? And
the answer is zero. But becauseyou come, do what he did,
and you're gonna make more than Imake because that's what he's doing right now.
That's that's the way. That's theway that it works. Let me
see here hashtag ask campy, ohTony. Paul Our buddy from the Detroit
(49:58):
News is Greg can't be worried aboutthe state of his golf handicap now that
he's getting such a late start tothe golf season. You are compromised a
big camp, you're behind schedule.Yeah, I'm really happy about it too.
So there's some people in this buildingtonight that really know about my golf
game. It's kind of it's kindof not real out there. There's this
perception that I might be good.I'm not. So There's a guy there's
(50:22):
a country club in Columbus called DoubleEagle, And when I go there with
a friend of mine, Bill Larkin, who flies us everywhere, is a
member there, and we go therethree four times a summer and it's very
very exclusive in that nobody's ever onthe course. So the whole all the
staff is your eight people there,so they take care of you right.
Well, one of the kids hasasked me, you know, you guys
(50:45):
open with Ohio State? Can Ihave tickets? And I said, sure,
I'll get you a ticket to OhioState. So he couldn't go for
some reason. So when we gotin the tournament was in Pittsburgh, he
text me, can I go right? And I go sure, since you
could make the hostiate game, Igot a ticket for you. So he
drove the Pittsburgh and he's sitting inthe stands and I put him right next
(51:07):
to a relative of mine. Andafter the game, I saw the relative
and they're talking and he's she saidto me, he said, he said,
you're not any good on the golfcourse. I'm never giving a guy
a ticket again. That's it.I mean, what, I got you
(51:29):
a two hundred dollars ticket for free, and you're gonna go tell my sister
that I suck. He's right, yeah, but keep your mouth shut,
right, I've come to learn itdepends on the stakes, right, Like,
yeah, absolutely, there's different there'sdifferent degrees of it. Evan wants
to know how is recruiting going withall the all the guys hitting the portal,
(51:49):
how do you how do you regroupthe roster? And does do you
get an uptick in the portal becauseof what happened? We're getting an uptick
of interest. Yes, and youknow our name is hot right now.
People know we're in Michigan all thatkind of stuff, So yes, we
are getting an uptick, but it'sstill gonna come down to, you know,
what we can give them and thosetypes of things. I'm very confident
(52:14):
I have a great staff. I'llsay it again, I'm very confident that
we're gonna it's gonna be a homerun. Yere in recruiting and you know
it's it's all gonna come down tothat, and we have a tremendous core
coming back. I think I don'twant to put any pressure on anybody,
but I think there's a chance thatwe could go farther than we did this
year. If the right people comeback and we you heard about how they
(52:38):
cared about each other, If wecan carry that over and that becomes the
norm, then I think this isjust a start camp. I asked,
I asked Blake that at one ofthe media availabilities, because that was always
the line, right, we loveeach other more than they do. And
you guys were nine to one infive points or less games. Do you
believe that? Do you believe thatcomes into play when you're in a close
(52:59):
game like that? Does that part? Yeah? And the only game we
lost in that close game was whenthe referee swallowed his whistle against Toledo,
right, you know, and Treyshould have been at the line shooting two
free throws to win it. Yeah. I believe that, and we talked
that if you were in our timeoutsdown the stretch at Kentucky and even against
m C State, the last thingsaid in every huddle is we win all
(53:20):
close games. And they believed it. You can tell it's the postseason edition.
You're getting a lot of golf questionshere. Ben He says, Hey,
Camp, how can I play aroundwith you on sharf? I play
very fast, Neil, you canjoin us too. So what do you
think we can get that done?Yeah? Bring some diet doctor Pepper and
you got me and you're in there. And then the last one here camp
at Oakland U fan Camp, allthat talk about diet Doctor Pepper and all
(53:45):
that talk about Portillo's. They haven'tgot you any endorsement deals yet, what's
going on with that? Actually,Colin told me that Portillo's reached out to
him, so I don't I don'tknow what that means. He Colin's not
here tonight, so I can't ask, but he's said they want to give
the team a free meal next yearwhen we're in Chicago or something like that.
So I mean it's a start,right. I guess if we've made
(54:07):
the Final four or the Sweet sixteen, maybe I would have gotten a free
big beef dipped or somewhere. Imean, I got free fries tonight.
So who knows? Absolutely? Camp, Yeah, absolutely. So that that
wraps up the as campy portion ofthe show. We got about three three
and a half minutes left. Camp. What are the final thoughts, ma'am?
(54:29):
Well, I think I just thinkyou have a group of young men
that are very thankful. I thinkOakland will mean the world to them the
rest of their lives, and Ithink the Oakland fan base will reciprocate that.
You know. I just sports isa funny thing. And I remember
(54:51):
before the championship game in the conferencetournament. It's so hard to win your
regular season and then win the conferencetournament. You have to be a special,
special group. And I told ourteam before we took the floor,
because we never knew who it wason our team, it was gonna be
Golkie, was gonna be Lampman, was it gonna be Townsend? Obviously in
(55:14):
the clutch clutch situations, we're goingto Trey. You know, you have
to do that. You know,I'm not stupid, I understand that.
And he always came through for us, right, but to get there,
to get in those situations, itwas always somebody different. And I made
the statement that March, you know, March creates heroes or some something like
(55:35):
that. I know Giz did ashirt with it, and we had hero
after hero and that was what itwasn't a hero, it was hero after
hero. And then obviously in theKentucky game, and we told him it
would change their lives. And Imean, Jack Gokie, as I said,
is going to go down, andit's and again Blake and I were
(55:55):
just talking about part of it isGolkie, right. I mean, if
that was Tray that had made ten, that's a twenty four year old transfer
from Hill. I mean, it'swhat athletics is about, It's what that
tournament is about. He he wasepitomized what the NCAA tournament is. Here's
(56:15):
this most unimaginable thing happening. Andif you go back and watch the video,
the shots he made are crazy.I mean they're absolutely crazy. And
he believed every second. I'm nota guy that loves a guy sticking his
tongue out and doing all the stuffJack was doing that day that if that
were a regular season game, heand I had have had a conversation maybe,
(56:37):
But I was really happy he didthat stuff. I mean I really
was, because that just made thatmade the legend grow, you know.
And the other side of that isthat everybody's so happy for him, right
everybody, our guys, you know, I mean tone Hunter. He was
in every picture, a guy thatit wasn't even dressed. What from the
(57:04):
Detroit I can't remember, what's hisname? What you talk about you talk
about for us? Yeah, Andre, our walk on Banks Banks Banks is
on the in the New York Times. He's yeah, I'm sorry, I'm
getting old, I guess, buthe's in the New York Times. You
show on TV they're showing the pregameand there's Banks. I mean, the
(57:24):
whole team got involved in it andit was unbelievable. So my final words
on the season is our thank youto everybody. I was blessed to got
taken on a ride by a groupof kids that are just out of this
world and the whole university. Ifyou could paint a picture of a group
that you'd want to take you fora ride, it would be this guy.
(57:45):
These guys, and we were allblessed to have that happen and it
will go down as one, ifnot the greatest season in Oakland history.
And we were all part of it. I mean, the fan base,
everybody was a part of it,and it was two of the best weeks
that we could ever want. AllRight, Well, camp great season,
and a big thank you to everybodythat comes out that will do it.
For this season of The Greg CampyShow. We're live at our J's Pub
(58:07):
in Rochester Hills. We'll talk toyou all next season. Well, see
you later.
