Texas Home Improvement. Now, nowwe get things started here. I've got
a guest on from Floor into Coreand we see if I can turn this
on without making a big pop.Nope, couldn't do it. I tried,
but Billy, welcome back to Texason the moment. Thank you for
having me. You know, alot of people don't realize what a floor

(03:10):
and the Core store is. Theyjust think it's a big discount store and
it's not. Absolutely we hear thatevery single time Jim your second hand,
the second surplus things of that nature. No, we are the number one
hard surface flooring retailer out there, and a lot of people when they first

(03:36):
walk in the store, it's justan awe. Yeah, it's the wow
factor, right, not even lookingat the lighting or the design or the
vignettes. But it's it's it's it'sgetting people in there to see wow.
Use big words like vignettes. Idon't, you know, I make sure
how to say it right first, but at the end of the day,

(03:58):
it's it's just these stores are absolutelyspectacular. Thirteen stores in the Houston area.
A design studio out there, andit's something special that you know,
if you haven't been in there, you need to go check it out.
Well. The design studios is somethingthat's not been around a great long time.
I've actually seen two of them.I saw one in New Orleans and
I saw one in Atlanta, Georgia. I haven't seen one in Texas yet.

(04:21):
Yeah, and you know, ifin my in the area of that,
the Dallas for Worth area, wejust recently had one, there's been
there for a while. There isone in the Houston area. And it's
not your everyday type of what wouldyou say, Uh, it's more caters
to the higher clientele, if youwill. You don't have to worry about

(04:45):
the fork lives or or things ofthat nature. It's more of a an
intimate and contractor guys like it's thecontract high end. It's the high end.
But you know, but sometimes youneed that gym. Sometimes you need
that particular Hey, wow, Ididn't know you had that. Yeah.
So those design studio stores really reallycater if when we when we can have

(05:08):
it and we can source it,they're there to really save the day.
Okay, but that store is alittle bit different. It doesn't have everything
in stock like regular and that's avalid point. You know, all the
listeners out there, that's a greatpoint. So it's more of we can
get it and then they can sourceit to whatether floor in the core near
your job area. So it's areally good resource and an extended service that

(05:31):
we provide. Floor in the Coremakes it sound like that's all you have
is floor, but you got alot more. Oh, you know,
we do, Jim, and youknow I know, but I'm feeding it
to you man, let it rollwith it, right. So look,

(05:51):
everybody that's the listeners that that thatthat tend to this station. There's a
lot of information out there when youwalk into a floor in a not just
hard surface that we always talk abouton your show, Jim, but we
also there's there's stair treads that wecan get, there's team molds, there's
there's Crown base molds that we carrya lot of pro gym. A lot

(06:12):
of people don't know that we carrythat there, right so they have to
run to the orange box or theblue box a competitor. But we have
that there. So when they seethat, they're like, my goodness,
we have everything we need here yep. And the tools and the tools I'm
telling you the tools. We keepgetting innovative with our tools, especially with
the excel slabs that we've talked aboutmany times on your show. It's something

(06:36):
special to where not only are wegetting innovative there, but we're also doing
believe it or not, we gotlevels there, gym tape measures. We're
really getting we're really get busting out. Now you mentioned the excel slabs,
you need to tell people what thatis because that's not something that I seen
anywhere other than floor into court. So I you know, that's just another

(06:57):
quarter in the slot. So it'sit's it's excelled, meaning the extra large
porcelain tiles. So you're looking atforty eight inch by one hundred and four
inches, and it's think about allof the ideas of the bathroom stalls with
not a lot of grout lines orthe fireplace that you can walk in and

(07:19):
just see this beautiful, amazing displayof porcelain tie and a lot of colors
are just amazing. All things Ineed to even touch about the twenty three
select exkews that we have. Andyou know what, Jim, a lot
of people are building outside like awningsand arbors and they're making it like the
fire pit where there it's there,it's their the countertop and they waterfall it.

(07:44):
It's just the ideas are endless, and the designers absolutely love using that
product. Now you're installers probably havea few choice words that are carrying that
big chunk of Yeah, it does. It does take its toll when it
comes to that, Jim, ButI would I'll guarantee you once you go

(08:05):
to that section and you pull thosedisplays, you're gonna be so mesmerized there.
You're gonna have ideas. And thennow it's it's the wife and the
husband figuring out what we're gonna dowith it. Right, So that's what
we want and we have our designersto help take care of that port.
Well, I've always shopped at theat the location over by Ell meet them
all, and I was I wentdown to League City on Thursday night.

(08:28):
It was my brother's sixtieth birthday.Happy birthaken. Not that he's listening.
He's up in Washington sturgeons fishing thisweekend. But different story. Anyways,
on my way down to uh LeagueCity there, I saw that they took

(08:48):
and made a Florida Corp out ofa huge store that was down there.
Was originally a grocery store. Andwhen that originally opened, I mean it
was like the biggest grocery store inTexas. I mean it was huge,
and they had their uh uh plantsgrowing without soil, you know, the
hydrophonics. Yes you are, yes, you are now and then uh then

(09:11):
it turned into other types of stores. The last thing I saw on there
was a Burlington Colt factory, Ithink, and now you guys took it
over, and you guys don't giveup store space. You know, it's
if if it's what I look atit is, we're going to cater to
the community and if it's something thatthat area is needing and we can provide

(09:33):
that excellent heart surface flooring with anamazing price. We source our product.
We're not third party second. Weown our We mine our own product.
So that's why we eliminate the middlemanwhen it comes to floridacore product. And
the more we keep taking market share, hey, you know what, the

(09:54):
more everyone's going to have a FloridaCore around the corner. Yeah. And
you know, one of of thingsin talking about hard surface, we're not
talking just the tile. It's tile, it's wood, it's lamin, it's
it's luxury. Vinyl plank is myface, it's actually what I'm putting in
my house right now. Yes,our new core product our Dura lux It's

(10:16):
vinyl flooring that it takes zero acclamation, it's one antimicrobial, is waterproof,
and it turns your house to themost gorgeous, gorgeous uplift that a lot
of people are doing, Jim.And it's really simple. Our stores offer
the easy how to clinics to doa JYM and you do a great job

(10:37):
of educating your listeners when it comesto that. So I think that everyone
if you haven't been in a foreignercorps, you know what do we have
to tell them, Jim, they'remissing out. They are like being at
this booth, at this stock sure, look at this, look at this.
This is amazing. Houston Stock LivestockShow is coming up next to you.

(10:58):
Oh, Houston, I forgot Houston. Yeah, they just announced their
lineup earlier. I guess it wasearlier this week that they did that,
that they announced it. But thatone's gonna be in March, and uh,
that that is gonna be a hugethat there's four big ones. Houston

(11:22):
Livestock Showing Rodeo, which is actuallythe biggest. I mean, if you're
gonna go to any rodeo beyond thatone, it's it's gonna be the nfr
A out in h Vegas. Butthen you got the fort Worth Stock Show,
You've got Austin, and you've gotSan Antonio and San Antonio is getting
ready to come up as well.Yes, sir, So those are the
big ones in Texas. And thenyou got the rodeo I like to participate

(11:46):
in, and that's Pasadena Livestock ShowingRodeo and just throwing out a great plug
for them. You can go toPasadena Rodeo dot com for more information on
that one, and there you haveit. And Jim, if you ever
need any help out there, youlet us know and we'll go on out.

You're gonna hear background noise today, don't worry about it. We're out
at the fort Or Stock Show androdeo, but still here to take calls
and answer questions for you. AndI've got Billy from Florin to Core on

(15:56):
with me, and uh, Billy, you mind if I jump into a
phone call here real quick? Oh? Absolutely all right, let's head to
Friendswood and Gordon. This is Jim. How can I help you? Hey,
Jim, thanks for taking my callagain. I've got a twenty five
year old house that has thirteen bythirteen tiles in it and they're pushing up.

(16:18):
So I've learned a new word today. It's called tinting, where the
edges of the tiles just start pushingup like a volcano. The ground is
sticking to the tiles. We wentahead and elected to cut it and pull
up a couple of them, andthe ground is sticking to the bottom of
the tiles and none of it issticking to the concrete floor. It appears

(16:44):
to be more widespread than what I'dlike to tell you it is, but
suggestion. It's a nice straight linethat's somewhere between six and eight foot from
the outside wall. Now it's actuallyin the middle of the house, in
the middle of the building room, yes, sir. There's a dining room
on one side, well okay, and then the patios on the other side,

(17:07):
yep, which has concrete foundation addedto it. And then there's a
bedroom in the kitchen, so somethingon all four sides of the living room
where this is occurring. And there'sno apparent cracks underneath the tile that we've
pulled up fourteen tiles and you know, you've got a concrete fissure, but

(17:27):
you've got that in every concrete slabin the world. Oh, absolutely no,
there's no opening in the crack.Okay, So this is not uncommon.
In fact, I'm expecting over thenext probably three weeks to have somewhere
between ten and twenty of these calls. What happens is when the temperature changes

(17:48):
rapidly, the concrete underneath expands andcontracts with temperature changes, and so does
tile, but at a different rate, and it will cause the tile to
pop up like that. And forsome reason, it typically happens on tile
that is in the eighteen to twentyyear range because and I don't know if

(18:10):
it and Billy maybe you know this. Was there a difference in the mastics
being used back then or what oris it just because the age if so
many times it's happened, but youknow, it is just basically the temperature
and expansion contraction of building materials.I think everything that you just said,
and you know, I appreciate thecaller with that question. And as the

(18:33):
technology of the setting material that hasevolved, Yes, it could be a
polymer issue. It could be someof our polymers that we carry now could
cause that. So yeah, Iwould think that it would be something like
that. So Gordon, I guessthe first question I have for you is
because you mentioned that the mortars aresticking to the bottom of the tiles or

(18:55):
you want to try to reset thosetiles. I'm looking for any kind of
guy that you can give me.If I can, the band aid would
appear the most economical. I don'twant to say I'm cheap, but I
want to. I don't want toput tile in five rooms of a house
more than you know, a year'sworth of salary. That's good because I'm

(19:22):
retired. I don't make nothing.See there you go there it is,
Uh, really, I guess inthe past, I mean, I've seen
people try to grind some of thatoff and and Reid hear them down.
Is there an easier way to doit? You know that there's so many
options that you can do on that, and uh, I think you from

(19:45):
from Gordon standpoint, I mean,if there are only certain tiles and if
they're popped up, you know,I would you know, something's you know,
something super simple utilizing some of thenew setting materials right help provide chip
if they're popped up, loosen youknow, chip up, clean up.
You know, because you know yournumber one your number one step is you're
always your prep. So making surethat you got that and uh, you

(20:08):
know, Gordon, I would recommendgoing to our any of our local floor
anda course, doors and see ifwe can get that right setting material for
you. Maybe that's something we canWell, he's in Friendswood, that new
League City store I was just talkingabout. It is probably just down the
right down the street from them. But Gordon to go into that. You
got to be careful on cleaning thetiles because you know it's easy to crack

(20:30):
them. So if you got somebodywho can grind them down a little bit,
uh with the with the mastic that'son there, it's fine. You
don't have to get it all off, but what you do have to get
enough off to put some new adhesivedown, some of the new mastics down,
and it's gonna band aid it.Just like you said, the floor

(20:55):
is going to continue to come loose, but it may buy you another five
or ten years. Even well ifit's ten years, it may be somebody
else's problem. Since I'm seventy, all right, you soun don't like my
dad now, and he's eighty six. When I talked to him, he
says, well, I got anothertwenty years to go, so I wish

(21:19):
So instead of band aid, whatwould be the permanent solution? Take it
up and put a new floor inall five rooms. Because they're matching tiles,
and I doubt I could get anythingto match. Now you're not the
thirteen inch, You're not going tofind a match any longer. Okay,

(21:41):
so yeah, it would be amatter of replacing it. Now, what
you may want to do, youknow, it looks like I gotta take
a news break here. What youmay want to do, though, is
do a couple of rooms and savesome of the tile from the other room
and used to match those in.Nothing says you got to do the whole
house. Okay, I actually gotit, but that I got to take

(22:03):
a quick break here. I'll putyou on hold and we can come back
to you, but I got totake a break for news, traffic and
weather. Let's talk about American StandardAir real quick. You know, I've
been using American Standard systems in myhome since nineteen ninety nine, and American
Standard is nationally recognized for excellence forperformance, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
So take care of your family allyear long with American Standard Air, an

(22:27):

head on, so keep your homecool and humidity free, but be ready
for that little bit of heat whenyou need it. Invest wisely, invest
in the home comfort system. It'sgoing to last you a long, long
time comfort the way you like it. That's American Standardair dot Com. He's

(22:52):
dependable, consistent, andsane, thecomplete opposite of Texas Weather. Here's Jim
Dutton one Texas Home Improvement. Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvements.
Your odal home improvement source seven onethree two one two five eight seven four.

(23:14):
Any home improvement question you have sevenone three two one two five eight
seven four. Uh, I've gotBilly on the on the line here I
should I shouldn't say. Billy isstanding next to me here from Flooring to
Core and uh, we were talkingwith Gordon when we went to news break

(23:37):
and David, can you bring Gordonback up? The call screen just went
down on me here, Hey Gordon, Yeah, okay, sorry about that.
I was waiting for the address andphone number of Flooring to Core in
Lake City. Uh, it's rightthere on the corner on on forty five.

(24:00):
And gosh you that five because fiveseventeen or eighteen, I can't remember
which one it is down there.Seventeen is Dignits in five eighteen Greek City.
It's at the five eighteen then, and uh, okay, right that
that big shopping center where that youknow where the that's where you're talking about

(24:22):
now, yep. And I don'thave a phone number, I just know
where they're at. Okay. Ialso found out that I got two other
neighbors that this happened to during thelast full of Lord Tech Freeze. So
I guess myne started then and thenthey just popped up on during this last
one. Yep. Yeah, Andand that's what I was saying. You

(24:48):
know, it's gonna continue to happenbecause typically once it's broken loose that way,
you're going to continue to have differenttiles coming up. Okay, already,
Well that's the bad news I didn'twant to hear, but I appreciate
it as you well, you're probablyright on them. I'll give you the

(25:10):
good, the bad, and theugly. Then it's up to you whether
you like it or not. Well, once we find out what it is,
then we can do something with it. So I do appreciate it,
even if it is bad news. Not a problem. Well, so you
have a Yeah, I enjoy thelast art show. Wish I was there

(25:32):
always it's a great show. Ibroadcast from here for the last I don't
know, twelve thirteen years already. So I like coming to I like going
to the different rodeos. So Ihope to stay in Houston. You know,
they've never invited me. I wishthey would. I need to worry
what's wrong with them? People havea good care Gordon, bye, take

(25:57):
care of and again our number sevenone three, two, one two,
five eight seven four. And youknow, Billy, we touched on the
fact that some of the new masticsaren't going to have those same problems.
I mean, the mastics have comea long ways. I mean used to
be moisture coming up through the slabwhich softens some of the old mastics.

(26:21):
That's been solved. And you knowwhat, Jim, it's it's you got
to give it to our vendors thatcome out our ladder creating our mape representatives
that come to the store and theyeducate where we are with our setting materials,
where we were. And you're rightbecause we still have pros customers di
wise that say hey, I'm lookingfor thin set and then that that opens

(26:41):
up a whole era of you know, new associates. Ball let me show
you are mortar. Yeah, sothere's there is that pendulum swing of knowledge
and history. So you're right, yep, you're right. So and with
thirteen locations, there's gonna be onenear them. And you know what,
I think Gordon's going to really beimpressed on the selection. Yeah, and

(27:02):
maybe he there's an opportunity that maybeinstead of popping up tiles, he can
put an equal prim on top andtile over tile. That could be an
option for him. So well, and I was joking as far as the
uh, you know, spending hiswhole paycheck on it, but it really
isn't as expensive as people think. No, And you know the great thing

(27:23):
Jim to do. The Florida Corpsdoes offer financing to help out as well.
I'm well aware. So that thatis another just another indicator of why
FLORIDNA Core is a one stop shop. I mean, and I'll tell you
up front. I went in,I was gonna I got enough floors to
do my whole house, and Iwas going to pay and then they told

(27:45):
me what the financing was, andthat zero percent for eighteen months. I
said, why am I going towrite this out now? Exactly? Why?
Why use our money, do itin payment and then you can you
know, maybe you know, packup to go to Houston Stock Show one
day. There you go. Well, Billy, I appreciate you taking time
to come over and talk with It'salways a pleasure Jim, you know it.
And uh look forward to talking toyou again. All right, buddy,

(28:07):
Thank you, sir, Thank yousir. And that was Billy from
from Flooring to Core. And I'mif you're looking for flooring for your home,
you need to start at floor inthe Core. Billy, before you
go, I did have one otherthing we were going to talk about,
and uh we forgot to talk aboutwood floors. You know, we talked
about tile and lamines and stuff. But the wood floors that you guys carry

(28:30):
are are amazing. And one ofthe things that you guys have that was
difficult for me to find was youstill had unfinished oak floor. Oh,
yes, we do the old style. They are so cool. Uh.
You can put certain finishes on there, you can put certain stains on there,

(28:51):
and it's something to where uh,my brother, my father, they're
they're they're the biggest fan of becausethat's what you know back in the day,
that's how I have to the majorityof the wood floors were oh yeah,
So it's where we're bringing that andwe're expanding that class, if you
will. But we still have theengineered and we still have the solid hardwood.
And uh, Jim, I'm tellingyou, when your listeners walk into

(29:14):
a store like that, they're reallygoing to be blown away by not of
the knowledge that you tell them here, but all the selections of the redwood
and the special of the three inch, the four inch, the five inch,
and it's it's it's something that evenmaybe we can convince Gordon of maybe
training the transition of some of that. My personal prayer is I like the
two inch, yes, I loveto oh yeah wood floors, but I

(29:40):
also saw and I haven't seen agreat deal of it yet, but the
uh oh, now, all ofa sudden, the name of it slips
my. You know, the littlestrips that came in four corners, uh,
and they were in each like thelet me see, I'm gonna drop
for you. It came in aa set like that, and then the

Home Improvement source seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. That's
seven one three two two five eightseven four And you know next weekend.
This weekend, I'm out here atthe Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.
Next weekend I will be out atthe Bras's Home and Garden Show, So

(35:14):
if you want to come out there, I'd be more than happy to talk
with you out there as well.So I'll just throw that out real quick.
Let's see, Melanie, how canI help you today? Yes,
I'll start off by saying, I'mnot going to say the name of the
plumbing company, but my mother, who is ninety five years old, had

(35:37):
a problem with the plumbing outside thehome and also inside the home, and
I asked the plumbers to look ateverything, let me know how much it
would cost. They had cameras, they came in, they toured the home

(35:58):
and whatever, and they dug up, you know, the outside, the
plumbing or the pipes outside, andeven broke up the driveway. And I
don't you know, I'm not aplumber. I explained that, but I
was trusting them to know what theywere doing. They charged my mother fifteen

(36:20):
thousand dollars and we were willing topay that. But when they finished the
work, they went in to dothe second part, which was in the
bathroom, and then all of asudden, they said, well, this
is expensive. I said, well, you know, I know it's part

(36:40):
of the fifteen thousand, because that'swhat we talked about. But then they
said, oh no, it's not. And I said, oh no,
you said that you would fix this. Now they're talking or they're saying that
it would be additional charge. Andso I got another plumber to come out

(37:02):
to let me know how much thatwould cost, and that plumber at first
said thirty five hundred, and thenhe came back and said ten thousand.
So I'm thinking an eighteen hundred squarefoot house, we're talking about twenty five
thousand dollars for plumbing. I knowsomething is wrong, so I'm asking you

(37:24):
what can I do At this point? Did you have a contract on the
first Yes, I did, andit reflected everything I said and I told
them, and you know, andI didn't want to argue with anyone.
I just wanted it fixed. Theycame back to the house at least seven

(37:46):
times to fix that, but thenthey disappeared. They didn't they didn't continue
to come. You have a contractand it has all that stuff listed on
it, and you've paid them. No, I didn't pay them well,
you gave them some though, right, No, I didn't give them anything.

(38:10):
They financed it. They said theywould finance everything. Okay, Well,
so then you're obligated to make paymentsto them to a finance company.
Okay, so I guess they soldthe net. You know, that's the
same as them being paid. Thenif it's going through a finance company,
they got their money. So youknow, if it's on the contract that

(38:35):
that work is supposed to be done, you need to be talking to an
attorney. Well I did, andthe attorney basically told me that usually because
I also wrote the the Plumbers ExaminersBoard, the State Plumbers Examiner Board,

(38:57):
which that's going to take ninety days, right, and you know, he
said that they are usually on theside of the plumbers. That's what the
attorney told me. And then hesaid, you know, to do some
work like that is very expensive. My mom is ninety five. She doesn't
have money for something like that. And I just feel like we were tricked.

(39:25):
You you know what's wrong. Iam not a plumber, and I
kept explaining that my brothers are notplumbers. So you go in and you
look at everything, you know whatneeds to be done. But then you
address it differently at the end. Now, I will say one thing.

(39:46):
If it's underslab or in the walls, they can't always see everything and know
what needs to be done, sosometimes there are some changes. But yeah,
but in the contract to do thatwork, that's what needed happen.
And again, if you've got acontract, I'm not sure why that attorney's
telling you that, because if it'slisted in the contract, they're obligated and

(40:09):
at the very least a letter froman attorney should be sent and that would
catch their attention better than just callingup and complaining to them on the phone.
Uh. I can give you somebodyto call if you'd like. Okay,
I'm ready. His name is ByronBarkley, Barkley Barkley b A R

(40:34):
and uh it's the Barkley Law Firm. And let me pull him up here
real quick. You can reach himat UH seven one three seven zero five
eight five four to one. AndBarkley is spelt b A R c l

(40:55):
A Y b l A y Okay, Yeah, b A R clay.
Okay. Now do you think twentyfive thousand dollars for that type of work?
Well, I don't know what allit was supposed to be done,
so I can't say. But ifthey're replacing the old cast iron under a

(41:17):
foundation having to do a lot oftunneling, it still sounds high. But
I know it can get that high, especially if you're having to do above
slab work. But you know,if you want to call my office,
we'd be more unhappy to take alook at it as well and tell you
what's needed and what it would cost, because I can tell you right now
an attorney's going to ask that questionalso, Okay, And I hate to

(41:40):
do this to you, but Ido that. Music meant I was supposed
to take a break, So letme take care of this real quick,
and just give me a holler atDue West, and I'd be more and
happy to talk with you about it. Okay, all right, thank you,
I appreciate it. Thank you.Let's talk about ready Seal, far

with this cold front, if youare losing all your heat out through the

that because they have a proprietary nonexpansive foam they can inject into the walls

This is Texas Home Improvement with JimDunton. Hey, welcome back to
Texas Home Improvement. Last call ofthe day, JC, How can I
help you? I have fall marble. Excuse me? In my shower at
the bottom there is dark stained aboutsix inches long, coming up where it's

(45:28):
connected to the flooring, which isanother slab or something. I don't know
what it is. What should Ido about that? Who should have called?
You would actually need a call?Go ahead, it says a thirty
year old house, okay? Andit is marble or a man made marble.

(45:52):
Man mar okay. If it's aman made marble, To be honest
with you, at thirty years,it's probably lived its life and is needing
to be replaced. They do startwearing that way, and as they wear
they do start turning colors because itgets built up and as it wears through
the surface, stuff soaks down intothe porest material under it, and that's

(46:15):
more likely what you're dealing with. There are man made marble companies who can
come out and service it, andthat's who I would contact. And I
hate to do this to you,but that music meant I'm completely out of
time. Thanks for listening to TexasHome Improvement today. Make sure you tune
