But you know, just because we'reout of the show, we're still here

(01:52):
to take calls and answer questions. So seven one three two one two five

(02:37):
can do to help you out hereon Texas Home Improvement. Now, I've
got Pam on from the Home andGarden Show out here, and how are
you today. I'm wonderful, thanksfor being here. Well, this is
a great show. I mean, this is a news center for the area
here, brand new facility, firsttime home show here. I live out
in the area and I really wantedto bring and i'llpportunity for both local vendors

(03:00):
and the local community to not haveto go downtown. Everything you need all
in one place, no driving around. And the free admission and that was
nice, very nice because that doesn'thappen in this market. So free admission
all weekend long. Yep. Sothe center here is the Eclipse Fort Bend
Epicenter. Epicenter. I knew itbegan with a knee and it's right here

(03:22):
on the fairground. So a lotof people know the fairgrounds. If you
don't know the name Epicenter, Okay, and at the home show here,
I mean you got virtually anything somebody'slooking at for the home, because I
walked through and I saw, youknow, siding companies, window companies,
flooring companies, bath and kitchen remodelingcompanies. They just come out and talk

(03:42):
to all the different things, aswell as look at all the trees right
here in front of us. Ifyou want to redo your whole yard,
you can get it done out here. Well. Our motto is from the
front door to the backyard, andliterally as we're sitting here looking you can
literally see everything from the actual frontdoor to the backyard everything in between.
I think one of the great opportunitiesat the Home and Garden Show that people
don't really pitch enough is the opportunityto meet with experts and get advice.

(04:06):
You can bring photos of your problemareas, your your backyard, your your
concerns, and you can actually talkto experts. There's no threat, no
need to worry about calling someone overto the house. You can meet with
people, you can touch, youcan shop, you can compare, you
can get multiple bids. You know, if you're trying to redo your basket
and decide if you even want tohave that guy out for your house exactly.

(04:27):
You can pick and choose, andyou know, like, for example,
give you a good example, somethinglike a window. Nobody ever wants
to replace their windows until they needa window, right, what do you
really know about windows? Now youcan come down here and you look at
every every single kind of window andmake a determination of what it is you
actually need, you know, touchit, feel it, compare and then
understand the differences. And I thinkwe've got you made you made the call.

(04:48):
We've got hard scapes, landscapes, garden, flowers, plants, every
kind of pain or interior exterior,it doesn't matter. It's all down here
in one place. And we're insideout of the wind, nice and comfortable.
And it is windy, right,it is happening which the rain and
the wind. This week it's beenamazing, So yeah, the weather is
fine inside here. We've got somegreat seminars coming up. We've got container

(05:11):
gardening, faery gardening, so youcan meet with those experts. We've also
got tomorrow a live wildlife show goingon for the kids with birds of prey
and so forth. There's a littlesomething for everyone. Something for the kids.
We've got Oh, it's about thattime too. Hot tub swim spas,
swimming pools, those are all hereas well. Well. I even
noticed one of the hot tub companiesis taking trade ins s. Even I

(05:32):
didn't know that. See, Ihad not seen that. Well, what
do you do with your old hottub? Right? Where do you go?
Are you recycle it? Right?Exactly? But then now obviously they'll
take it off your hands, Sothat's that's actually a real bonus, right.
But they've got these really fancy swimspas now, and they've got it
down paw where you can actually clipin and swim against the tide and you
don't have to dig a pool.I mean, you haven't seen what the

(05:53):
cost to dig a pool anymore.Yeah, you're talking about a small condominium,
so that's kind of getting out ofreach. But I'm just sitting here
too, looking at these beautiful trees. I mean, these are what eight
ten twelve foot trees. You needsome trees in your yard, they'd come
out and install them. I'll say, he's got you know, four and
five inch caliber trees out here. That's these trees are ready to go.

(06:15):
They're ready to go. They're readyto go. And you know what,
what the best part of this herefor the BRASA show is these are your
local These are your neighbors, Theseare your next door neighbor, the guy
down the street. These shows keepthese businesses alive, you know, from
the spring to the fall until thenext one. And it's just a great
opportunity to keep those dollars in thelocal community. Now you have speakers out

(06:36):
here as well. In fact, garden Line Skip was out here. Kip
Richer's been on for two hours. He can't get away. And yeah,
in fact, we've got a ferrygarden. Somemin are coming up next well,
we do have those tomorrow container garden, vegetable gardening. It's about that
time. I know people are thinkingit's still cold, but it's gonna be
spring before you know it. You'regonna have those tax refronts coming in.

(06:58):
It's going to be that kind oftime to get these projects done. And
truly, now's the time to belooking as well, because you don't want
to wait until it's time to dothe project to start looking. Never get
a contractor yes, you'll never geta contractor if you wait till the ideal
weather. Now is the time toreally get those quotes be ready and get
scheduled, because some of these guysare going to be scheduling months out,

(07:18):
So now's the time, especially aftera show like this, there's so many
people doing business here. They're goingto be running for the next month doing
you know, quotes and so forth, So now's the time. And again
it's a great opportunity to where veryrarely, like if you talk to a
landscaper you don't know, you cancome in here and see their work and
see their portfolios and compare one onone and say this is what I want.

(07:40):
The other thing is you can learnall the latest trends. What's going
on with colors, kitchens, bathrooms, you know, is it open concept?
Is it over? Is it back? Is it going away? You
know we've heard it all right, open concept is now going away for like
two weeks ago. You had tobe open concept. Now next week it's
not about open concept. So theycan kind of show you where the trends
are going. What are the colorpowders, flooring textures. That's the other

(08:01):
stuff you can learn, like what'scoming next. You don't want to put
something in that's going to be outin a week, right, So they
can help you with that advice. It's all about that advice. When my
wife comes back, would you mindtelling her the open concept that is going
away before she has me tear allthe walls out. Yes, because I
recently sold a home that was anopen concept and they wanted me to go
open concept, and of course Iwasn't gonna fix it because I was selling
it then, like I bought ahome with open concept, and then the

(08:22):
first couple articles I read of thetrades said open concepts going out. I'm
like, I give up. Igive up. But they're gonna that's what
they are. They're the experts. They're gonna help you. They're gonna guide
you through the process. They're gonnahelp you understand what it is like,
how to get a budget together. The type of people you should call these
are good vendors. These are qualityvendors. There's no fly by night kind

(08:43):
of situation here. You know,we stand behind our vendors. If you
ever have a problem with a vendor, you know we intervene. We absolutely
intervene, and if it doesn't getresolved, they'll never do business with us
again, and they'll never be outthere with the public in our events.
So we take that very seriously. Now, you got to other event coming
up in Corpus Christy too. It'sat the end of the month in Corpus

(09:03):
And we love our Corpus Christie show. Those people down there, they love
their shows. Same situation, absolutelyeverything. We're almost completely sold out.
Time to get shopping. We gethuge palm trees in that one, huge
palm trees. These are different kindof trees. But yeah, that show's
coming up. I think it's theend of the month. Is like the
twenty third through the twenty fifth,Yeah, the twenty third through the twenty

(09:24):
February of February. Yeah, allkinds of stuff for the kids, everybody,
kids, man, women, kids, everybody, cooking, pets,
animals, classes, everything you canimagine. So that's my one of my
favorite shows. And one more time, tell us where this show is taking
place in four hours, Yes,the Four Bend Epicenter. We're going to

(09:45):
be here today until six tomorrow onSunday, we open at eleven and we
go till five, so you don'twant to miss it. We got some
great seminars tomorrow kicking off at noonwith the Live Wildlife presentation, so you
can bring the kids for that containergardens and ferry gardens. Go on after
that, come on out. We'dlove to have everybody down here. And
this building is beautiful and they've gotgreat concessions. They've got like Chick fil

(10:07):
A and all that good stuff. So you can come on down, spend
the afternoon and get a meal, and you don't have to do that after
or before. Come on down. You can do it here. And I
know I should you should have askedthis before. But do you have anything
coming up in Austin? Not inAustin, No, but we do have
some coming up in Fort Worth,Okay, Fort Worth, Frisco, Collin
County. That's our that's our domainand corpus and they'll passo Okay. I

(10:30):
don't know how far you go.I don't want to go to El pass
I want to go to El Paso. Been to El Paso. There was
nothing there. I want to go. I don't want to go back.
Yes, they don't really have muchwith the garden stuff. No, no,

what I can do to help youout here on Texas Home Improvement. So

(16:17):
I'm gonna take care of a coupleof email questions that have come in and
whoops, that was not the rightplace to go, was it. Let's
go here? Where we go?So? Rick sent in an email question.
I have a one story, twentythree hundred and eighty square foot home
built in two thousand and three withten foot ceilings. The house is hard

(16:38):
to heat in the winter, althoughI have added lots of insulation to the
attic a couple of years ago.Who could I contact for an energy inspection?
That does not sell energy products. Also, when they added the insulation,
they covered up all the softs andplaced some tubes in it in its

(16:59):
place that it's is extremely hot inthe summer. Any advice, Well,
let's start with those tubes. Youknow that's not uncommon that when you add
insulation, you have to add sometype of baffling system to let the air
still circulate. But the air intakeis only one part of it. How's
the air exiting? I personally loveusing ridge fence. But you got whirlybirds,

(17:25):
you got air hawks, you gotsolar fans, electric fans, I
mean all these different things. Soyou need to check make sure that you
got a way for the hot airto go out as well as the new
air to come in. Now,as far as you know, not being
able to heat it very well,I will tell you when you have ten

(17:45):
foot ceilings or higher ceilings, youknow, one of the reasons they went
to eight foot ceilings is it holdsthe heat down. The higher the ceiling,
the higher up your heat is,and it's difficult to heat the lower
portion vice versa. In the summermonths, the heat rises and the cool

(18:06):
air stays down to make you morecomfortable. And so no, it's good
and bad for you. Yeah,it's bad in the winter months, but
it actually works in your favor inthe summer months. Now, one of
the things you can do in orderto offset this is have ceiling fans and
you run them in reverse where duringthe summer months, you got air blowing

(18:30):
down on you in the winter months, you reverse it to where it's sucking
the air up. And what itdoes. It takes air up, It
pushes on the top, circulates itout to the X to the outside walls
of the room and down to thefloor, and balances out the temperature.
And you may not have to doanything else in order to make that room
comfortable. So you may want totake a look at that first before you

(18:56):
start spending a bunch of money.Again, if you've got a question two
five eight seven four, that's sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four, And I'll see what Ican do to help you out here on
Texas Home Improvement your total home improvementsource again seven one three two one two

(19:21):
five eight seven four. Let's seehere. Glennon Beaumont says, a garage
stealing textured stomp has been coming off. Attempted to scrape it off using water
in a pump up sprayer. Someof it, though, is very well
attached and is proving to be adifficult job. Thinking about using some type

(19:47):
of covering material, paneling, etcetera. Your thoughts recommendations. I think
part of The problem is humidity fromthe dryer venting directly into the garage.
Yeah, change that. We willhave to route it outside any limits on
length of run for the dryer vents. It depends on the dryer. Dryers

(20:07):
definitely do have a length run thatyou don't want to exceed. Usually once
you're going past twenty feet you're gettinginto difficulty for the dryer. And you
are right. This humidity in thegarage is what's causing the issue. Most
garages, after they get to beabout twenty thirty years old, start having
this problem, whether the dryer vent'sin there or not. But I will

(20:30):
tell you if you go up witha paneling or anything like that, it's
gonna do the same thing. It'sgonna sag between where it's attached and so
you're really not gonna solve the problem. It's just gonna look different for a
while. The easiest thing to dois take that all the texture off and

(20:53):
make it a smooth ceiling, paintit and be done with it. When
you get ready to paint, tomake sure you do a good primer sealer
first. I like to use zenserz I n z er and you can
put that on let it soak inand on a garage like this that has
had these type of issues a lotof times, I recommend doing a second

(21:17):
coat of that primer sealer before youstart putting your finished coat of paint on
it. And that's just to sealit up good because all that moisture has
been in there and uh, it'sgoing to absorb quite a bit of the
primer sealer to seal it up andmake it ready to paint. Anyways,

(21:40):
we're getting ready to take a breakfor news trafficing weather here on Texas Home
Improvement in seven forty ktr H.You got a question seven one three two
one two five eight seventy four.Let's talk about F Wave shingles. You
know, when it comes to yourroof, you need a shingle that's gonna

(22:03):
be durable and gonna last. Andthat's what the F Wave Reva shingles do.
Now, a lot of shingles, you know, you hear people talking
about the Class four shingles. Well, Reva shingles by f Wave is the
toughest Class four shingle on the marketthat I know of. But not only
does it handle the hail and thesteelball testing and all that kind of stuff.

(22:26):
It will take wins that most shingleswon't. We're talking wins in excess
of one hundred and seventy miles anhour. Wouldn't it be nice to not
have to worry about your shingles peelingoff the next time a storm comes in.
That's why you need to take alook at f Wave's Reva shingles.
You want to see more about it, go to thchi pro dot com again,

(22:48):
that's thhi pro dot com and clickon the link for Reva Shingles by
f Wave. When it comes tohome repair and improvements, he'll give you
the good news and the bad news, kind of like a Velveta and Vasoline
sandwich. Here's Jim Dutton on TexasHome Improvement. Hey, welcome back to

(23:15):
Texas Home Improvements, your Total HomeImprovements source. Hey, I'm out at
the Brass Home and Garden Show. We're out at the oh what's the name
of this place again? I lostthe name of the place anyways. Oh,

(23:37):
here is Fort Bend Epicenter and uhyeah, if you want to come
out, I'm gonna be here tillabout four thirty. Would love to talk
with you, so, uh,just keep that in mind. Also,
if you got a home improvement question, I'm still here to take calls and
answer questions. So seven one three, two one two five eight seven four,
we're gonna head to my hometown ofPasadena. Beverly. How can I

(23:59):
help help you? Beverly town home? I have it. We'll put that
go ahead. Beverly Home. Andit has approximately fourteen fifty square feet.
I need to reinsulate the attic. What are my better options for doing this?

(24:30):
You know? Uh, how holda town home? Is it?
And I'm asking that for a reason. Does it have the fire breaks in
it in the attic or does theone attic open to everybody? No,
there's fire breaks in it. Itwas built in nineteen ninety three, okay,

(24:51):
okay, and I do have Ihave ridge Vince, and I want
to insulate it. Okay. Soyou choices are going to be either a
blown in or bat type insulation.Blown in is typically easier to put in.
I mean you go up with ahose and they blow it in and
you know, fill it up thatway, it settles over time and you

(25:14):
have to reapply. Bat insulation comesin a role basically and they go up
and they can lay it out overthe existing insulation, and the bat insulation
does not settle over time, andfiberglass bats they don't decay or anything.
So once you do it that way, you are finished. So that's going
to be your two choices. You'llfind that typically, if you're going to

(25:37):
hire somebody to do it, theblown in is going to be less expensive
than the bat type insulation. Okay, is there anything that I could look
at that would help repel some ofthe heat, reflect some of that heat
back up instead of allowing it inor is that even something to be considered
anymore? Yeah, yes it is. Take a look at energy Q radiant

(26:04):
barrier. You know, you hearwe used to hear a lot about radiant
barriers. We don't hear about themas much. But the energy Q is
a five layer system. It's gota thermal break in the middle. And
I don't know how much insulation doyou have in your attic right now just
looking at it, probably eight ornine inches at the most. Okay,

(26:32):
So you can take this energy Qand lay it on the top of that
insulation, just like a blanket,And yes, it'll keep the heat that
gets in the attic from getting downto the insulation, so it allows the
insulation to do its job. Mypersonal home I got, you know,
three four inches of insulation in mostof it, but about twenty five to

(26:56):
thirty percent of my house has noinsulation. And I have that Energy Q
radium barrier on the floor. I'vehad it up there for eighteen years and
it does a great job. Ihave a three thousand square foot house.
I run an electric bill in thesummer months of two hundred dollars or less,

(27:17):
so it definitely does its job.Okay, thank you, mister Dunton.
And if you bet, and ifyou want to talk to the folks
over at ENERGYQ, their number isone eight hundred, nine hundred sixty two
twenty and you know they'll be ableto help you out. They have guys

(27:40):
who can even do the installation ifyou want to have it done, and
you'll find that it's probably quite abit less expensive than adding insulation. Okay,
okay, thank you very much, you take care, you bet,
Thank you by again our number sevenone three two one two five eight seven

(28:04):
four. That's seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. And
I'll see what I can do tohelp you out with any home improvement issue
you're having, and uh, youknow, talking about the radium barrier real
quick. You know, people think, oh, radium barrier for the summer
months. Well, in the wintermonths like this, it keeps the heat,

(28:26):
the energy Q keeps the heat that'sin your home from escaping out into
the attic. Uh. So it'sa multi layer system and it works in
both directions. So really it's somethingthat you need to take a look at.
You can find more information by goingto our website t hipro dot com.

(28:47):
You'll find a link there to energyQ radium barrier. Again, if
you got a question seven one threetwo one two five eight seven four.
That's seven one three two one twofive eight seven four, And I'll see
what I can do to help youout here on Texas Home Improvement your Total
Home Improvement source seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. And

(29:15):
Andy asked the question could use recordedrepair company to refinish bathtub with cracks scratches?
Don't want to replace the tub?You know, typically when I see
one that says it's got cracks, that's an indication that it is a fiberglass

(29:37):
or a plastic of some kind, not a steel tub. Now, steel
tub can show a crack a littlebit in the porcelain finish, but typically
if it's doing that, it's notjust showing a crack, it starts uh
blistering off. And I'm not gettingthat out out of here. I'm thinking

and it's shingles on top of shingles, but they're just falling apart. It's

(35:07):
about fifteen hundred square feet a singlestory. And uh, there's some roofers
in the neighborhood that have been doingeverybody's roof out there. Everybody seems to
be happy, but the price theyquoted seemed awfully high to me, and
I was hoping to get maybe areferral from you. Absolutely give Guardian Roof

I just had them put the roofon for me, And uh,
you know, I've recommended them toowell for years already. They did just
do a great job. That's whoI remember you saying now, But before

(35:53):
I called you, I just couldn'tremember who you always recommended. Yeah,
and uh, you know somebody likethat when they do give you an estimate
look at the roots, and they'realso looking at replacing any paneling that needs
to be replaced on top generally, yeah, the plywood and stuff. Yeah,
normally, what they'll do is they'llinclude us so much in a contingency

(36:15):
for replacing wood and things like that. Okay, well that's definitely helpful.
You're at the Garden Show today andI'm at the Premiere Gun Show. You're

I really appreciated Jim. That's helpful, and thank you for your time.
You bet you take care, byebye bye. And talking about the

(37:01):
Passing Livestock Showing Rodeo, this isthe seventy fifth anniversary for the Passing Livestock
Showing Rodeo. It's been going onseventy five years and it's just a great
organization. I've been involved with itfor years, and yeah, I've got
choices, you know where I wouldwant to be involved in stuff, But

(37:21):
they can. They do so muchin the southeast quadrant of Harris County.
I mean, the number of kidsthat benefit from the Passing Livestock Showing Rodeo,
the amount of money that they investinto the area, just you know,
helping on the fairgrounds to build things. I'm working on a fundraiser and

(37:45):
we'll talk about more of this downthe road, but working on fundraising to
build a new ag building and stuff. I mean, it's just a great
organization to be a part of.Anyways, if you've got a question,
seventy one to three one two fiveeight seven four going up to Conroe,
Greg. This is Jim. Howcan I help you? Hey, Jim,

(38:07):
what I got is, uh,you know, walking into my barn.
Uh. You know, I havea concrete driveway up to it and
going into the entry door. Youknow, my sofat is only like twelve
inches out and I want to putin you know, get one of those
canopies off Amazon, like a fortyby forty and you know I have horizontal

(38:28):
hardy plank. You know, canI screw into that? Or do I
need to drill through it and putsome type of anchor in there, you
know, to hold of brackets oneither end of that canopy. You know,
what's the best way to attach tothat hardy. You don't want to
attach it just strictly to the hardy. You've got to get into the wood
behind the hardy. Okay, allright, I was wondering about that.

(38:51):
I think, you know, Ican come up with something, but you
know, I yeah, or mighthave to think about a different type of
can to pick cover, you know, because I do have like a four
inch piece of trim wood, youknow at the very top that covers you
know, the top of that topparty board and Uh, you know,
I don't know if you know,if I can get least one screw into

(39:15):
it. You know, bracket haslike two screws on each bracket, two
or three. You know, Iwould, I would bet money though,
if you look at the instructions I'mputting that that cover in. Uh,
it's gonna tell you get into thewood structure, not not just the facial
board or anything like that, butactually get into the support wood behind.

(39:38):
I mean talking about into some studsor something back there, whether yeah,
whether it's a stud or the roofjoist or or something along those lines,
something that's solid to hold it right. So I just because the facer board,
yeah, the facial boards, evenif it's wood, you start getting
any kind of wind, uh yeah, it'll pop those off. Yeah,

(40:00):
I understand that, you know.I just I need to cover because that
water, you know, it justcomes straight down and beats up against my
door, you know, and Iget you know, it's just a mess.
But I need some type of cover, you know, something to push
it back a little bit. Allright, Well, I'll you know,

(40:21):
I'll get there. I've got mystud finder would find and find something.
And I got one more question toask you here about windows. You know,
I'm almost a year in the waitingon that previous aforementioned window company,
and I'm worried. Am I gonnalose my money if they go out of
business? You know? I meanif they went out of business, I

(40:46):
would say yes, but I don'tthink that's going to happen. It's what
I would tell you. How arethey? Are they staying in contact with
you? If I call them Jim, and I've only called them like just
a couple of time, I don'twant to piss them off, you know,
So then I'm sorry, stay incontact with them. Uh yeah,

(41:08):
But stay in contact with them andthey'll they'll get it handled for you.
And I hate to do this toyou, but I gotta let you go
because that music meant I was supposedto take a break. We'll be back

Head back to my hometown, Pasadena, ED. How can I help
you today? This sar miss Dean. How are you? I'm doing great?
How about you? Good? Acouple of questions if you don't mine.

(50:15):
So, I recently had insulation putin my house and I got new
windows two weeks ago, about twelveor thirteen of them. And the week,
yeah, that was a week atthe freeze that came in. I
think it was January fourteenth or somethinglike that. So the week prior,

(50:36):
the week after my windows were installed, my energy bill doubled, my usage
doubled. I've had the company outthree times again before then to make sure
because I felt drafts and all kindsof other stuff coming in. And they
came out again today and everything feelsgood. But I was curious as to
why my energy bill was double withhaving energy efficient windows put in. There's

(51:02):
nothing that a window should have doneother than leaving a window out that should
have doubled the energy bill that wayon on windows, uh, because even
even if it had gaps, Iwouldn't have expected it to double if you
had old bad windows. So uh, I'm not sure what could have run

(51:24):
the bill up like that unless there'sa line that they hit or something,
you know that that's hidden it andit can very well happen and it's arcing
in the wall somewhere a line, what kind of what kind of line like
an electrical an electric yeah, anelectric line? Oh you know now you

(51:45):
say that, I would notice alight flickering ever since I got the window's
done. It's very possible that oneof the fasteners and in putting in the
windows, if there was a wirerun where it shouldn't have been in or
something that uh, the screw hitthe wire and it's it's kind of like

(52:06):
a welding machine. It's just sittingthere arcing and every time it does that,
man, it's it's we can havocwith that h meter. So,
especially since you know you sorted gettinga flashing light that way, you need
to have an electrician come out andtake a look. Because I got an
idea, you got you got ashort somewhere. Yep, we never had

(52:29):
that problem before. So we've gotour windows in give it. Get the
folks over right, touch electrical,A call right touch yep, right,
touch electrical and you can reach themat two eight one six four five five
five two six, and uh letthem take a look at it and they

(52:52):
can check the lines and everything tobecause I'm I'm betting, especially since you
got a flashing you know lights thatare flashing, Now that's more likely what
it is. Okay. The secondsecond thing is that when you get new
windows installed, does that make yourkitchen counter like the kitchen's eye of the

(53:12):
window. My counters attached to thewall have separated, and now there's gaps
like around where the windows were usedto earn flush but now they're all a
little separated. So I want itback and do some culking. But I
don't know if that was a commonthing or not. Under underneath the window
the window sill and with the cabinso attached, is that is that a

(53:35):
common thing? No? Factually,Wow, there's nothing when windows are are
put in. You know, thewindow is is like sheet rock, it's
a veneer. The studs that thewindow attaches to is the structure. So
unless there's something wrong with the structurelike you know, rotten boards, termites

(54:00):
eight something like that, there isnothing that the walls should not have moved
with putting in windows. What aboutthe outside hardyboard in my house and all
the seal of the trim around thewindows, there's a gap now behind the
windows or between the top of theside and the bottom on the trim or

(54:24):
on the trim where it meets thewindow. The trim around the windows on
the outside. You know it's alldecorated, right, yeah, but is
it is it on the side thatmeets the window or is it on the
outside part of it you know whereit's just the siding meeting the trim.
Just deciding eating trim. Okay, again, there's nothing in replacing window unless

(54:52):
they unless they had to reset thethe trim, there's nothing that should have
caused any issues with that there.Wow, it's a fall star rating company
and it's been a freaking headache heresince I've done it. Okay, well,
I I want to call you becauseI didn't think that. Yeah,
but I'm gonna be honest with then. I don't know who you who,

(55:13):
what window company you're dealing with oranything, but I'm not one hundred percent
sure what you've got going on asfar as the wall there is is their
problem. It almost it almost soundslike you got some rotten studs or something
that's allowing that wall to move.Well, it's possible. I mean the
house is building the fifties and youknow, yeah, I try to you

(55:36):
know, all the all the improvementsI made is you know, it take
takes time and money to do that. So it's been you know, a
little yet, a little bit there. But so yeah, I was I
was just four when I saw mymy energy usage. I get a report
of the week and it literally doublesthat that one week. I was like,
how is this freaking possible? Andit wasn't the week of the hard

(56:00):
freeze, right, it was, well, it is possible during that week
that it doubled I mean that thatwas happening to a lot of people.
People who normally have an electric billof two hundred dollars are getting a six
hundred dollars electric bill for the forthat one. My house is a you

(56:21):
know, electricity is electric, butmy house is gas, so there's there's
no electric in running off that wedidn't run an all. Yeah. Yeah,
then then we're back to you gota short somewhere perfect, Thanks so
much, appreciate you, love you, show me you bet, thank you,
take care and again seven one threetwo one two five eight seven.

(56:46):
For any home improvement question you have, pick up the phone, give me
a call. Let's talk about ithere on Texas Home Improvement Bill in the
Woodlands. How can I help you? Well, I've got a hot water
here. Oh that's forty gallon beenin my attic for at least six years
that I've been here, and I'mgetting worried that it needs to maybe have

(57:07):
the anal rod replaced and or plushedout. And I was wondering if a
plumber would do that, and they'reso how much they will do it.
It's usually you know the cost ofthe rod and the service call to come
out and do it unless it's corrodedinto place or something. But honestly,

(57:30):
unless you started smelling the water orsomething, there's no reason to mess with
the rod. Oh okay, wellno being in the attic. I don't
want to find out because I gotforty Jellon's water in my ceiling. Yeah,
but the analdrod's not gonna cause that. What the analdrod does is keeps

(57:52):
the water from stinking when it comesout the hot water spickt Yeah, it's
it's the generals in the water, just the scale. That's not true.
Then yeah, well it does toto a minor degree. But really what
it does is it keeps you waterfrom smelling bad. Oh I see,

(58:13):
Okay, so you know what, when when that rod goes bad, you'll
know it just by the old Okay, got it. So it just really
needs to be drained probably this timethen. Yeah. And typically if you
let it go more than two years, you're gonna you're gonna struggle trying to
grain drain it and get the sedimentout of it. It just tends to

(58:38):
crystallize in the bottom after that amountof time. Oh, so I'm really
looking at replacing the hot water herewhenever it starts leaking, then yeah,
if it starts leaking or you know, gets too old and it's not producing
enough hot water for you or anything, then it's time to just replace it.

(59:00):
Okay. And you know people worryabout draining it to for the sediment
and all that stuff. I'll behonest with you, I personally have never
drained my hot water heater to getthe sediment out. Huh. Have have
your hot water heaters lasted as longas a manufactured warranty and then some coh

(59:23):
Okay, well maybe I'm worried aboutyeah. Yeah, people worry about their
water heater way more than they needto. Uh. And it always amazes
me when they list on a housefor sale, Oh it's got a new
water heater. You know, waterheaters themselves don't cost that much. Now
the installation can add to it.But I mean you're typically for a water

(59:45):
heater twelve to eighteen dollars to changeone out, depending and it just depends
on how complicated it is to getto it and all that. Why do
they put usually in the in theattic which can only cause a problem.
In California, they were all ona fe manage slab. If they plotted

(01:00:07):
out, No big deal. Space, that's it. You know, it's
it's going to eat up space whenit's down on the on the ground and
my own house, it was inthe pantry. I wanted the space.
I moved it to the attic.Got it okay, Well, thank you,

(01:00:32):
Jim. I appreciate it very much. You bet you take care And
you know now I moved it tothe attic when it was a tank.
Now I've changed it years ago toa tank list which I could have left
in the in the pantry downstairs. So you just never know. But yeah,

(01:00:54):
that's it. It's just it's justa space issue. And here in
the Houston area, all our waterlines typically run through the attic anyways,
and so they just put the waterheater there where all the water lines are
seven one three, two one twofive eight seven four. Let's talk about

(01:01:14):
Reva shingles real quick from f wave. You know, this is the shingle
I have on the roof of myhome. And the main reason I did
it is I got tired of replacingthe shingles from storms. And you gotta
pay that deductible and it's just youknow, the deductibles, you know,
they started where it was a fivehundred, then it was a thousand,
then they went to one percent.I've had to replace my roof. This

(01:01:37):
is my fourth roof. I mighta three percent deductible. I don't want
to pay that anymore. So Iput the most durable shingle on the market

had that call about the problems he'shaving with window installation, and one of
the things I brought up was itcould be there's some rotten wood in that

(01:03:25):
wall, because that's sure what itsounded like. Well, a lot of
window companies don't have anybody who canfix that, and so they either tried
a doctor over it or ignore itand things like that. You won't have
that problem when you use Texas RemodelTeams Window Division because they are a remodeling
company that has a division that isdedicated to doing just windows. That's all

(01:03:50):
that crew does. But if theyget into something that has rottenwood, they've
got a team to fall back onthat can come in and do that repair
and get the windows in the waythey're supposed to be. You know,
you want some replacement windows, callTexas Room Model Teams Window Division two eight
one six one two fifty nine ninetyone. That's two eight one six one

(01:04:13):
two fifty nine to ninety one.You were listening to Texas Home Improvement with
Jim Ditton. You are a sourcefor all things home improvement that says big
ass Texas. Not here, todhere. It's Jimmy Dyton. Hey,
welcome back to Thanks On Improvement. We are broadcasting today from the Brass Home

(01:04:39):
and Garden Show. We're out atthe Fort Bend Epicenter, and you know
there's all kinds of stuff to seehere and then we open tomorrow again.
They're open today till six. They'llbe open again tomorrow from eleven to five,
So you got plenty of time tocome out and take a look around
out here. Uh, let's getready to jump back into our calls here
at seven one three five eight sevenfour, James and Richmond, how can

(01:05:04):
I help you? Thank you fortaking my phone call. It's greatly appreciated.
I purchased a house. It's asmall house, a little under seven
hundred square feet, built in nineteenforty wooden windows, no insulation, very
costly to air conditioned during the summer. I have since then put in double

(01:05:30):
pane windows. I have put infoamed the walls. And as they were
insulating the house, they insulated theroof deck, all the walls. And

(01:05:50):
as I was having a sheet rockcrew come in and replace the ceiling,
I noticed at that time is thatthey sealed the entire house. They sealed
my my events, my ridge vents. And my question to you is what

(01:06:12):
should I expect in the near futurefrom them totally sealing my house? So
I'm assuming you had it. Theyencapsulated it with foam everything. Yes,
sir, Okay, your AC systemnow needs to have a air intake from
outside, because otherwise it's going tostart sweating something fierce inside that house.

(01:06:39):
Are it is current? It isafter all using window units. Okay,
that that'll actually that'll uh bring upthe next thing I was going to ask,
or are you having to replace theHVAC system, Because the other issue
you're going to run into is yourif you had the same system as before,

(01:07:01):
it's going to be way oversized. You'll have to bring down the size
of the AC so that it canstay on longer to dehumidify it better.
The fact that you're using window unitsin this window units don't do a super
good job of dehumidifying a house. You're probably gonna have to put a dehumidifier
in the house. Otherwise, asthe humidity levels build, and they build

(01:07:28):
just from us breathing in a home, you'll start getting walls that are sweaty.
You'll start seeing mold and mildew inthe corners and windows and stuff like
that. So that's kind of whatyou're going to be expecting, and just
keep an eye out on those kindof items. If you start seeing that,
that's definitely if you haven't already atthat point gotten a dhumidifier, that's

(01:07:51):
when you absolutely would want to getone. Okay, my near future plans
are putting ah I believe, thesplit units of believe is what it's called.
They're coming up so many yes, would that be a good choice.

(01:08:13):
Yes, awesome, And a dehumidifyingunit, a portable unit will will help
until I have this split unit putin correct. Yep. It just monitors

(01:08:33):
the humidity level in the house. You know. You can go and purchase
a humid astat that'll tell you whatthe humidity level is in the home.
And typically you're trying to keep itdown give or take a fifty to fifty
five is really a good humidity level. If you get down below forty,

(01:08:54):
it's too dry, you know,So forty five to fifty five is kind
of a great range to keep it. And that'll kind of help you with
turning that the dehumidifier on and off. And some of those have built in
humidistats as well that you can setwhere it'll come on and off. And

(01:09:15):
they're not expensive. They are acouple hundred bucks to get a dehumidifier.
And I hate to do it toyou, but that music meant I was
out of time. I gotta goahead. Thank you for accessing my phone
call. You have a good weekendyou as well. Thank you, sir.
Hey, let's talk real quick aboutAmerican standard. You talking about something

(01:09:36):
that can take care of that humiditylevel well. American Standard air conditioning systems,
they can do it. They cantake care of your family all year
long. In American Standard heating andair conditioning systems. They have the technology
that meets the ever changing Texas weatherhead on. So keep your home cool
as humidity free, or be readyfor a little heat when you need it.

(01:09:59):
Invest Ley and invests in the homecomfort system that will last you a
long, long time comfort the wayyou like it. That's American Standardair dot
Com. He's dependable, consistent, and sane, the complete opposite of Texas
weather. Here's Jim Dutton on TexasHome Improvement. Welcome back to Texas Home

(01:10:27):
Improvement, your total home improvement source. We're out here at the Brass Home
and Garden Show. It's at theFort Bend Epicenter. And you know,
one of the things we get callsabout periodically is decking materials and should somebody
look at the synthetic decks and stuff. And I've got Lauren on with me.
He's from Houston deck and Shadon.Lauren. Welcome to Texas Home Improvement,

(01:10:49):
Hu Jim, thanks for having me. Oh my pleasure. So one
of the things that you have isTrex, the synthetic decking materials, and
I actually have some of that atmy house. I have a boat dock
on a little pomp that I haveat the house. And the nice thing
about using that type of material isI don't have to worry about it deteriorating.

(01:11:12):
Oh man, it's great. Yeah, put it down and enjoy it
for decades. And literally it isfor decades. You know. The biggest
thing that I have noticed on buildingwith that is your joist and stuff have
to be a little closer together thanyou would use on dimensional lumber. But
other than that, I mean,it's all pluses, Yes, sir,

(01:11:32):
it's all pluses. You do haveto take a little extra caution when you
frame it Trecks. There's a littlefew nuances you have to know. You
know, we try to go twelveinch centers to make give you a solid
deck because, as you probably know, trecks is not structural, so you
can't span really far with it.But man, is it just a solid
product for longevity. Yeah, Andyou know, the maintenance on it is

(01:11:54):
almost nothing. I mean, thebiggest thing I've had to do maintenance wise
is go out and clean off wherethe geese have left stuff I didn't need
on there. Oh yeah, maintenanceis a breeze, even grease. You
spill something on there, a littlesimple green or some mild degreas or man,
just get that stuff right off.You don't have to spend a whole
bunch of time power washing scrubbing itbecause it's not porus. It doesn't absorb

(01:12:15):
anything. Now at Houston Deck andShade, you guys do more than just
a deck. I mean you doall kinds of stuff, decks, pergolas,
and pavilions, all the nice outdoorstuff. Yes, sir, So
what do you do for lumber Well, funny you ask, Jim, I
asked for a reason. I wasteeing that one up for it as a
softball pitch there. So three yearsago we opened our own lumberyard hardware store

(01:12:42):
up in Cleveland, Texas. Uhhuh. And we sell ourselves and we
sell retail. So we we buytrecks by the truck load through through Lauren's
Lumber and Houston dec and Shade isa pro platinum installer. We installed were
the number one install you buy volumein Southeast Texas for trecks. Wow,
and and you know for treated Sothe funny you mentioned that about lumber,

(01:13:02):
because if you go down to yourbox store, you pull a board off
the shelf. Most of the time, Jim, it's gonna say above ground
contact on that tag. You putthat deck in the Houston area where it's
you know, it's high moisture content. Most decks are low to the ground.
We don't have a lot of elevationchanges. You get decks. It
doesn't matter if you put a youknow, a thirty five or a fifty

(01:13:23):
year trucks deck on top of that. If you put that down, you
know, eight inches off the groundsix to eight years, you're go and
be replacing that frame, yep, because it goes bad. They're not treated
the way they used to be inthe box stores like they do. You
got me on my salt box herenow the box stores, like they do
with everything else, they dumb downthe product. It's not made to do

(01:13:44):
what you think it is. That'sit. So Lauren's Lumber. One thing
we do is we stock ground contacttreated material. It's a higher treatment concentration.
Don't have that problem. You canyou can put it right in the
ground. It's the same if yougo to a box store and you look
at a four by four post andthen go the next all over and look
at a two by anything. It'sgonna be two completely different treatment concentration,

(01:14:06):
same treatment, just different concentrations becauseof the four by four has to be
able to go in the ground versusa two by four not so much.
So you got a lot of problemswith ripping them out. We tear a
lot of decks out that are sixseven years old just because of that.
Okay, So if somebody wanted totalk to you about a deck and possibly

(01:14:27):
using tracks and the lumber and allthis kind of stuff, how would they
get in touch with you? Justgive a call eight three to two four
a zero five one six one,or looks up on the web at www
dot Houston and Shade dot com.And obviously you'll be out here again tomorrow
at the show. Absolutely, yes, sir. You're all day to today
and tomorrow yep. And the showis tomorrow from eleven to five. Again
it's at the four Bend Epicenter andyou don't feel free to come on out,

(01:14:50):
but Lauren, I appreciate you takingtime to come over and talk with
us. And you know, beforewe go though, one of the things
that change over the years with thetrecks. Is it used to be you
kind of had two styles, youhad a grade and a tan, and
now they've got something to make itlook like it's a little more wet,
more realistic looking, yes, sir. So you know, compositive is multiple

(01:15:15):
generations in now. It started inthe early nineties, and when it first
came out, it was real porous, and it was you had gray or
gray er, you know, youjust didn't have a lot of off something
and a lot of it had ablue hue. Actually, fun fact about
Treks, Jim. You may notknow this. Early in the mid nineties,
a lot of Treks was blue. And the reason it was blue was
because tres was the biggest consumer ofWalmart bags, really yeah, and they

(01:15:40):
grind up Walmart bags and woodpulp andmake tracks and when they extruded it out,
all those bags were blue. Sothose gray decks were actually blue.
But anyway, it's come a longways. Trex's cat cap. Now most
composits are capped and the cap isman. It's so many different color options,
different highlights in the materials. Absolutelybeautiful trucks come out with a signature

(01:16:01):
decking this year that man it's juststunny. It looks it looks like real
wood. That's why I'm looking atthe pictures there. I mean some of
those planks look like almost like it'sa smooth surface. Ceedar. Yeah,
it is a man, it's beautiful. Fifty year warranty too, now,
Jim, Oh wow, yeah,Yeah, it's come a long ways like

(01:16:24):
you said, Yes, sir, sure has Again, Lauren, I appreciate
your time, and hey, Ihope people come out and talk with you.
Sir. Thanks, you appreciate youhaving me take care. All right,
let's jump back into our calls realquick. Here, we'll head into
Barry. You're up in the UpperKirby area. Where's that Upper Kirby It's

(01:16:46):
around River Roads Creamway Plaza. Okay, it's inside six' ten yep.
Well how can I help you today? Oh? Do you have any familiarity
structural concrete Inclead panels? Or isusing them as building for building a house?

(01:17:08):
A little bit? Yes, sir, I just wonder what you thoughts
on. I've just been reading aboutit and something new to me and sounds
interesting and I'm just curious, istoo, if that's a good option instead
of using a traditional stick build home, so to speak. Well, I

(01:17:30):
guess the first question I would askyou is you have lots and lots of
money. I do not, inspite of living near river Oaks. Living
in river Oaks. That's interesting becauseit seems what I've been reading is,
you know, it's pretty you know, it surprises me. It seems i'd

(01:17:50):
be pretty costompetitive with you know,a regular you know, two by four
type hoals. It sounds like that'snot the case. It's it's not.
It's actually quite a bit more expensivethan two standard stick construction, and that's
the reason stick is still king herein Texas. Uh, you just cannot

(01:18:13):
be cost competitive with all these othersystems. But they are stronger, they
are easy to uh you know, control your temperatures in the home and and
things like that. But uh,it's just it's just a cost. People
aren't willing to spend it. Yeah, you know, it would definitely makes

(01:18:34):
a difference. Head not reading aboutit just seems like they're you know,
they tell them being you know, hurricane and fire resistance. Yea, it
is basically concrete and then like yousaid, it's you know, insulated real
well. So anyway, Yeah,I'm just curious with what you thought about
it. So I love it.I just I personally can't afford to build

(01:18:58):
one either. Yeah, well I'llhave to. I'm sure i'll be.
I would have found that out soonor later if I got any further into
it, all right. Yeah, well, you know the other thing is
we all say we can't afford tobuild it, but the next hurricane that
comes in and blows the house over, you wish you had one. Yeah,
that's for sure. There, youtake care. Hey, let's talk

back to Texas Home Improvement. Theword total home proven source. We're gonna
head to another call here Kim andAnderson? Where is Anderson? Anderson is

(01:23:15):
just a little east of an episode? Huh? Okay, Well, how
can I help you? I wasout in Waco helping my daughter and her
son, my son in law,was some home repairs and we were replacing
the molding that goes underneath the roof, drip molding on the roof, and
it was riding out. Well,no big dealt you know. We went

(01:23:38):
to replace it, and then Idecided to say, well, why it's
unusual that underneath the drip molding thatthis would be riding out in certain sections
and I noticed nails at the endof the shingle that was nailed into that
roof drip molding, and the onesthat came up were passing water, and
that's where they were riding out.So anyway, I want to step further.

(01:24:00):
I lifted up the shingle right there, right above the roof drip molding,
and there was a gap between thedecking, the roof deck and the
facial board about half an inch, and so that sort of bothered me.

(01:24:21):
And so it's passing water there, and it looks like he put the nails
in so the water wouldn't run behindthe shingle. The water would run underneath
that shingle and then come down insideof that facial board. And I'm just
wondering, is there a wider roofdrip molding that she could put in the
house. The roof is pretty nudesfive to seven years old. That just

(01:24:45):
put it in before people before thejust put it in before my daughter and
her husband purchased the house. Okay, they do. Some of the roofing
companies actually break their own for thatreason, because it's not unusual for the
decking to be back a half inchlike that, and it does create issues

(01:25:06):
trying to nail it on up there, and so some of them will build
one that you know, reaches backthree inches instead of the inch and three
quarters to two inches that most ofthem do. Uh. And you may
find some already done at some ofthe shingle supply houses. You're not going

(01:25:29):
to find it at the box stores, but at the shingle supply houses.
It wouldn't surprise me if you couldn'tfind it there. Okay, So probably
because it looked like the one thatthey used was less than two inches.
Yeah, like I said, probablyin three quarters or yeah, yeah,

(01:25:50):
but you can definitely get them thathave wider flanges on them. Yes,
great, Okay. My last quickquestion is that so driving those nails and
they use roofy nails, and theythey tacked down that last row of shingles
into that is that normal? Two? Is what normal? They put the

(01:26:17):
at the last row of the shinglesthat goes over that roof drip molding,
right, put a nail on theoutside, not underneath the shingle, but
on top of the shingle, anddrove it into that trim molding that that
drip molding rests on. No,I mean Normally, the way a roof
is put on, there is astarter row that's under the shingles that would

(01:26:42):
have the nails in it, andthen your shingles would go on top of
that starter row. Uh, andthose shing those nails would only be hidden
by the next layer of shingles. So no, there shouldn't be shingles there
nails on the top. Yeah.The part is I didn't. I don't
think I saw a starter row.Yeah, and that's what's causing all your

(01:27:05):
problems is they didn't do the roofright to begin with. Yeah, so
what what is it? Is therean economical way to try to fix that?
We have to take three rows ofshingles off and put the starter row
down and then put the shingles backon it. Okay, the roofing guy,

(01:27:29):
I don't think I can do that, But roofing guy can do that.
Oh yeah, absolutely, Okay,Jim, thank you very much.
I really appreciate that you're insight.Thank you for whatroducer. You take care

out of Austin, and I meangetting him up on There we go,
Cody, how can I help you? Yeah, sir, Jim, I
appreciate you taking my call. I'mgonna be building a like a workshop and
I'm gonna use all gassing. WhetherI should use two by six's for the

(01:31:36):
base, and I didn't know howfar apart I should make my senders,
if I'm going to run three quarterinto plywood for the floor, and what
are you gonna do in this shop. Uh, just just like a woodworking
shop, you know, store tools. Nothing big. Okay, you could

(01:32:00):
go sixteen inch on centers if youwant. If you're gonna do anything big
or precise, then you would wantto cut it down to twelve inch on
centers. And as far as whetheryou to use two by six or two
by eight tens, all depends onhow far you're trying to span it.
Uh, that's gonna be your yourbig hold up on it. How big

(01:32:23):
a shop are you building? Tenby twenty? No bigger than twelve by
twenty. I haven't yet quite decided. Okay. Yeah, on something that
size, I would probably go withtwo by six. And since you're gonna
have skids under it, you canyou know, run the skids, put

(01:32:45):
them, oh probably four to fivefeet apart, and that'll split things up
to where your spans aren't that bigfor the two by sixes and it'll handle
it with no problem, okay. And that that'd be good with three quarter
in flywood. Oh yeah, absolutely. And I hate to do it to

you, but that music means Iam one hundred percent out of time,
